Abstract:Palmprint is one of the most reliable features in personal identification because of its stability and uniqueness. This paper proposed a novel palmprint recognition algorithm based on principal lines: a new irregular geometrical shape was employed to get valid palmprint region, which decreased the influence of large noises; not only structure feature, but also intension information were included in the final extracted principal lines, which provides much sufficient clues for palmprint recognition; the Probability Feature Image(PFI) was used in order to suppress random noises in feature image; features from several training samples were merged into one template, which guaranteed the integrity of feature; fuzzy logic was employed in matching algorithm. The high recognition rates obtained in the experiments show the efficiency of proposed algorithm.
Palmprint Feature Extraction Based on Multi-wavelet and Complex Network.

Abstract:A new palmprint feature extraction method is proposed by analyzing the characteristics of palmprint images, multi-wavelet analysis and complex network. As we all know, the main lines of a palmprint image is a key to recognize a palmprint, and the other thin and small lines usually may influence the recognitions results relatively small. Motivated by this, the principle line feature extraction is preferred in the palmprint recognition. Multi-wavelet analysis can not only extract the coarse information, but also give the detail information in horizontal and vertical direction. By analyzing the multiwavelet features of palmprint images, it can be seen that the low frequency sub-band image with a multi-wavelet decomposition can present the principle lines very well. So the low frequency component is selected first. By observing the 4 components of the low frequency sub-image, three components except for the diagonal component contain almost all information, so these components are extracted as the elementary feature of a palmprint image. Furthermore, the binarization computation is performed on the 3 extracted features with different thresholds to extract the secondary feature of a palmprint image. Instead of directly using the binary features, the connectivity of the points in the principle line is considered because the relative correlation of the principal lines is also a key factor to recognize a palmprint image. Therefore, a series of dynamic evolution smallworld networks of the feature points in the principal line are built and the final complex network features are extracted, which contain maximum degree, average degree, standard deviation of the degree and contrast. Experimental results on the CASIA Palmprint Image Database show that the proposed method is effective, especially for the little training sample number.

Abstract:This paper introduces a generalized palmprint identification framework to unify several state-of-art 2D and 3D palmprint methods. Through this framework, we argue that the methods employing one-to-one matching strategy and binary representation for feature are more effective for palmprint identification. The analysis for the first argument is based on a statistical matching model and is supported by outperforming results on several publicly available 2D palmprpint databases. These two arguments are further evaluated for 3D palmprint matching and used to introduce a new method for encoding 3D palmprint feature. The proposed 3D feature is binary and more efficiently computed. It encodes the 3D shape of palmprint to either convex or concave. The experimental results on two publicly available, from contactless and contact-base 3D palmprint database of 177 and 200 subjects, respectively, outperform the state-of-the-art methods. This paper also provides our palmprint matching algorithm(s) in public domain, unlike the previous work in this area, which will help to further advance research efforts in this area.

Abstract:This study presents a hierarchical palmprint feature extraction and recognition approach based on multi-wavelet and complex network (CN) since they can effectively decrease redundant information and enhance key points of main lines and wrinkles. The palmprint is first pre-filtered and decomposed once using multi-wavelet. Three components (LL1,2,3) corresponding to the pre-filter except for diagonal component are extracted as the elementary features. Second, binary images (BLL1,2,3) are obtained by the average window method using different thresholds. Third, three series of dynamic evolution CN models (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd CNs) are constructed from global to local, which is based on the mosaiced images obtained from BLL1,2,3, BLL1 and four equally divided sub-images of BLL1, respectively. Fourth, statistical features are extracted from complex networks, in which average degree and standard deviation of the degrees are extracted for the 1st CNs and average degrees are extracted for the 2nd and 3rd CNs. Fifth, the fisher feature is extracted using the linear discriminate analysis method. Finally, the nearest neighbourhood classifier is used to recognise palmprint. Based on the CASIA Palmprint Image Database, experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively recognise palmprint with good robustness and overcome the problem of small training samples number.

Abstract:This paper presents a multimodal biometric identification system based on finger geometry, knuckle print and palm print features of the human hand. The hand image captured from digital camera was first preprocessed to get the finger ROI (Region Of Interest) and palm ROI. Finger geometry features and knuckle print features of index, middle, ring and little fingers were extracted from the finger ROI; palm print features represented with keypoints and their local descriptors were extracted from palm ROI. A coarse-to-fine hierarchical method was employed to match multiple features for efficient hand recognition in a large database. The decision level AND rule fusion was adopted which has shown the improvement of the combined scheme. Our experimental results demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Palmprint recognition is an efficient method to identify a person. The small size of palmpdnt identification equipment will facilitate applications and extend application scope. This paper implements a practical schema of the palmprint identification system based on ARM and WinCE. The ARM processor acquires the palm image from a digital camera, extracts the features from the palm image and matches the feature with corresponding template in the database, finally gives out the identification result. Experimentations proved that the proposed system could identify palmprints with high accuracy. Fur-thermore, the proposed algorithm is invariant to image translation and rotation, and is partially invariant to affine distortion,image scale, changes in 3D viewpoint and illumination. The palmprint could be captured in contactless manner and does not need any fixing facility, which is much friendly to the users. Besides, the proposed system has the merits of small size,cost-effective and low-power, which are appropriate to be adopted in power and cost sensitive civilian applications.
PalmNet: A Robust Palmprint Minutiae Extraction Network.

Abstract:Minutiae is the crucial foundation of palmprint recognition due to their discriminant and persistence. However, disturbed by complex latent noise, wide creases, and various frequency changes, it still challenging to extract palmprint minutiae. To address these issues, a robust palmprint minutiae extraction framework, PalmNet, is proposed. Specifically, considering the complex noise on the latent palmprint that is difficult to model, we avoid directly extracting the minutiae on the original image, but based on the Gabor enhanced map. Further, to make up for amplitude information missing in the Gabor enhanced phase field, we fuse phase and amplitude features to boost model performance. The orientation field is an inherent property of palmprints. Accurate orientation field estimation can benefit minutiae extraction and Gabor enhancement. Therefore, to recover the orientation field disturbed by wide crease, we make use of deep feature expression power and orientation consistency strategy to estimate orientation field. This two-stage method combines palmprint prior knowledge and has better interpretability, which can help us understand and analyze the total framework. Experiments on public LPIDB v1.0 and THUPALMLAB palmprint database demonstrate that our proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art. Notably, our algorithm improves the rank-1 recognition rate from 91.7% to 99.6% on the THUPALMLAB database.

Abstract:Palmprint recognition has received tremendous research interests due to its outstanding user-friendliness such as non-invasive and good hygiene properties. Most recent palmprint recognition studies such as deep-learning methods usually learn discriminative features from palmprint images, which usually require a large number of labeled samples to achieve a reasonable good recognition performance. However, palmprint images are usually limited because it is relative difficult to collect enough palmprint samples, making most existing deep-learning-based methods ineffective. In this paper, we propose a heuristic palmprint recognition method by extracting triple types of palmprint features without requiring any training samples. We first extract the most important inherent features of a palmprint, including the texture, gradient and direction features, and encode them into triple-type feature codes. Then, we use the block-wise histograms of the triple-type feature codes to form the triple feature descriptors for palmprint representation. Finally, we employ a weighted matching-score level fusion to calculate the similarity between two compared palmprint images of triple-type feature descriptors for palmprint recognition. Extensive experimental results on the three widely used palmprint databases clearly show the promising effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:With the rapid development of mobile devices, smartphones have gradually become an indispensable part of people's lives. Meanwhile, biometric authentication has been corroborated to be an effective method for establishing a person's identity with high confidence. Hence, recently, biometric technologies for smartphones have also become increasingly sophisticated and popular. But it is noteworthy that the application potential of palmprints for smartphones is seriously underestimated. Studies in the past two decades have shown that palmprints have outstanding merits in uniqueness and permanence, and have high user acceptance. However, currently, studies specializing in palmprint verification for smartphones are still quite sporadic, especially when compared to face- or fingerprint-oriented ones. In this paper, aiming to fill the aforementioned research gap, we conducted a thorough study of palmprint verification on smartphones and our contributions are twofold. First, to facilitate the study of palmprint verification on smartphones, we established an annotated palmprint dataset named MPD, which was collected by multi-brand smartphones in two separate sessions with various backgrounds and illumination conditions. As the largest dataset in this field, MPD contains 16,000 palm images collected from 200 subjects. Second, we built a DCNN-based palmprint verification system named DeepMPV+ for smartphones. In DeepMPV+, two key steps, ROI extraction and ROI matching, are both formulated as learning problems and then solved naturally by modern DCNN models. The efficiency and efficacy of DeepMPV+ have been corroborated by extensive experiments. Mobile Contactless Palmprint Recognition: Use of Multiscale, Multimodel Embeddings

Abstract:Contactless palmprints are comprised of both global and local discriminative features. Most prior work focuses on extracting global features or local features alone for palmprint matching, whereas this research introduces a novel framework that combines global and local features for enhanced palmprint matching accuracy. Leveraging recent advancements in deep learning, this study integrates a vision transformer (ViT) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) to extract complementary local and global features. Next, a mobile-based, end-to-end palmprint recognition system is developed, referred to as Palm-ID. On top of the ViT and CNN features, Palm-ID incorporates a palmprint enhancement module and efficient dimensionality reduction (for faster matching). Palm-ID balances the trade-off between accuracy and latency, requiring just 18ms to extract a template of size 516 bytes, which can be efficiently searched against a 10,000 palmprint gallery in 0.33ms on an AMD EPYC 7543 32-Core CPU utilizing 128-threads. Cross-database matching protocols and evaluations on large-scale operational datasets demonstrate the robustness of the proposed method, achieving a TAR of 98.06% at FAR=0.01% on a newly collected, time-separated dataset. To show a practical deployment of the end-to-end system, the entire recognition pipeline is embedded within a mobile device for enhanced user privacy and security.

Toward Efficient Palmprint Feature Extraction by Learning a Single-Layer Convolution Network

Abstract:In this article, we propose a collaborative palmprint-specific binary feature learning method and a compact network consisting of a single convolution layer for efficient palmprint feature extraction. Unlike most existing palmprint feature learning methods, such as deep-learning, which usually ignore the inherent characteristics of palmprints and learn features from raw pixels of a massive number of labeled samples, palmprint-specific information, such as the direction and edge of patterns, is characterized by forming two kinds of ordinal measure vectors (OMVs). Then, collaborative binary feature codes are jointly learned by projecting double OMVs into complementary feature spaces in an unsupervised manner. Furthermore, the elements of feature projection functions are integrated into OMV extraction filters to obtain a collection of cascaded convolution templates that form a single-layer convolution network (SLCN) to efficiently obtain the binary feature codes of a new palmprint image within a single-stage convolution operation. Particularly, our proposed method can easily be extended to a general version that can efficiently perform feature extraction with more than two types of OMVs. Experimental results on five benchmark databases show that our proposed method achieves very promising feature extraction efficiency for palmprint recognition.

Abstract:Palmprint recognition has seen significant advancements and garnered considerable attention recently. However, deep learning methods have yet to effectively incorporate insights from traditional approaches to extract palmprint-specific features. Moreover, intra-class spatial variation problems, which degrade the recognition performance, have not been adequately addressed. To tackle these limitations, this study proposes an Aligned Multilevel Gabor Convolution Network (AMGNet) to identify the informative and salient aspects of the palmprints. The network unifies a multilevel Gabor feature fusion branch with a spatial alignment branch, enabling the joint mining of aligned multilevel features specific to palmprints. Within the feature fusion branch, we incorporate two specialized Gabor convolution modules: one targets the principal lines of the palm, while the other focuses on the wrinkles, augmenting the discriminative power of the acquired features. To enhance the model’s robustness against within-class variations, we design a spatial alignment branch that specifically enables the rectification of palmprints’ spatial positions. In conjunction with this, we introduce a novel direction-based CosAngle loss function to facilitate geometric alignment among samples from same palms while spatially distancing those from different palms. Furthermore, we construct a palmprint database consisting of 3, 000 palms from 1, 500 individuals to explore large-scale population potential. Extensive experimental results on six benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms other popular approaches in palmprint recognition tasks.

Abstract:Abstract This paper builds upon a previously proposed automatic palmprint alignment and classification system. The proposed system was geared towards palmprints acquired from either contact or contactless sensors. It was robust to finger location and fist shape changes—accurately extracting the palmprints in images without fingers. An extension to this previous work includes comparisons of traditional and deep learning models, both with hyperparameter tuning. The proposed methods are compared with related verification systems and a detailed evaluation of open-set identification. The best results were yielded by a proposed Convolutional Neural Network, based on VGG-16, and outperforming tuned VGG-16 and Xception architectures. All deep learning algorithms are provided with augmented data, included in the tuning process, enabling significant accuracy gains. Highlights include near-zero and zero EER on IITD-Palmprint verification using one training sample and leave-one-out strategy, respectively. Therefore, the proposed palmprint system is practical as it is effective on data containing many and few training examples.

Abstract:Palmprint is a promising biometric feature for use in access control and forensic applications. Previous research on palmprint recognition mainly concentrates on low-resolution (about 100 ppi) palmprints. But for high-security applications (e.g., forensic usage), high-resolution palmprints (500 ppi or higher) are required from which more useful information can be extracted. In this paper, we propose a novel recognition algorithm for high-resolution palmprint. The main contributions of the proposed algorithm include the following: 1) use of multiple features, namely, minutiae, density, orientation, and principal lines, for palmprint recognition to significantly improve the matching performance of the conventional algorithm. 2) Design of a quality-based and adaptive orientation field estimation algorithm which performs better than the existing algorithm in case of regions with a large number of creases. 3) Use of a novel fusion scheme for an identification application which performs better than conventional fusion methods, e.g., weighted sum rule, SVMs, or Neyman-Pearson rule. Besides, we analyze the discriminative power of different feature combinations and find that density is very useful for palmprint recognition. Experimental results on the database containing 14,576 full palmprints show that the proposed algorithm has achieved a good performance. In the case of verification, the recognition system's False Rejection Rate (FRR) is 16 percent, which is 17 percent lower than the best existing algorithm at a False Acceptance Rate (FAR) of 10(-5), while in the identification experiment, the rank-1 live-scan partial palmprint recognition rate is improved from 82.0 to 91.7 percent.

Abstract:Palm-print recognition system is extensively deployed in a variety of applications, ranging from forensic to mobile phones. This paper proposes a new feature extraction technique for robust palm-print based recognition. The method combines the angle information of an edge operator and multi-scale uniform patterns, which extracts texture patterns at different angular space and spatial resolution. Thus, making the extracted uniform patterns less sensitive to the pixel level values. Further, an optimal artificial neural network structure is developed for classification, which helps in maintaining the higher classification accuracy by significantly reducing the computational complexity. The proposed method is tested on standard PolyU, IIT-Delhi and CASIA palm-print databases. The method yields an equal error rate of 0.2% and classification accuracy of 98.52% on PolyU database.

A Deep Learning based Framework to Detect and Recognize Humans using Contactless Palmprints in the Wild

Abstract:Contactless and online palmprint identfication offers improved user convenience, hygiene, user-security and is highly desirable in a range of applications. This technical report details an accurate and generalizable deep learning-based framework to detect and recognize humans using contactless palmprint images in the wild. Our network is based on fully convolutional network that generates deeply learned residual features. We design a soft-shifted triplet loss function to more effectively learn discriminative palmprint features. Online palmprint identification also requires a contactless palm detector, which is adapted and trained from faster-R-CNN architecture, to detect palmprint region under varying backgrounds. Our reproducible experimental results on publicly available contactless palmprint databases suggest that the proposed framework consistently outperforms several classical and state-of-the-art palmprint recognition methods. More importantly, the model presented in this report offers superior generalization capability, unlike other popular methods in the literature, as it does not essentially require database-specific parameter tuning, which is another key advantage over other methods in the literature.

Abstract:The range of value‐added chemicals produced by Escherichia coli from simple sugars has been expanded to include xylitol. This was accomplished by screening the in vivo activity of a number of heterologous xylitol‐producing enzymes. Xylose reductases from Candida boidinii (CbXR), Candida tenuis (CtXR), Pichia stipitis (PsXR), and Saccharmoyces cerivisiae (ScXR), and xylitol dehydrogenases from Gluconobacter oxydans (GoXDH) and Pichia stipitis (PsXDH) were all functional in E. coli to varying extents. Replacement of E. coli's native cyclic AMP receptor protein (CRP) with a cyclic AMP‐independent mutant (CRP*) facilitated xylose uptake and xylitol production from mixtures of glucose and xylose, with glucose serving as the growth substrate and source of reducing equivalents. Of the enzymes tested, overexpression of NADPH‐dependent CbXR produced the highest concentrations of xylitol in shake‐flask cultures (∼275 mM in LB cultures, ∼180 mM using minimal medium). Expression of CbXR in strain PC09 (crp*, ΔxylB) in a 10‐L controlled fermentation containing minimal medium resulted in production of ∼250 mM xylitol (38 g/L), with concomitant utilization of ∼150 mM glucose. The ratio of moles xylitol produced (from xylose) per mole glucose consumed was improved to >3.7:1 using metabolically active “resting” cells. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Palm print identification is a biometric technique that relies on the distinctive characteristics of a person’s palm print to distinguish and authenticate their identity. The unique pattern of ridges, lines, and other features present on the palm allows for the identification of an individual. The ridges and lines on the palm are formed during embryonic development and remain relatively unchanged throughout a person’s lifetime, making palm prints an ideal candidate for biometric identification. Using deep learning networks, such as GoogLeNet, SqueezeNet, and AlexNet combined with gray wolf optimization, we achieved to extract and analyze the unique features of a person’s palm print to create a digital representation that can be used for identification purposes with a high degree of accuracy. To this end, two well-known datasets, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University dataset and the Tongji Contactless dataset, were used for testing and evaluation. The recognition rate of the proposed method was compared with other existing methods such as principal component analysis, including local binary pattern and Laplacian of Gaussian-Gabor transform. The results demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms other methods with a recognition rate of 96.72%. These findings show that the combination of deep learning and gray wolf optimization can effectively improve the accuracy of human identification using palm print images.

Abstract:Biometric computing offers an effective approach to identify personal identity by using individual's unique, reliable and stable physical or behavioral characteristics. This paper describes a new method to authenticate individuals based on palmprint identification and verification. Firstly, a comparative study of palmprint feature extraction is presented. The concepts of texture feature and interesting points are introduced to define palmprint features. A texture-based dynamic selection scheme is proposed to facilitate the fast search for the best matching of the sample in the database in a hierarchical fashion. The global texture energy, which is characterized with high convergence of inner-palm similarities and good dispersion of inter-palm discrimination, is used to guide the dynamic selection of a small set of similar candidates from the database at coarse level for further processing. An interesting point based image matching is performed on the selected similar patterns at fine level for the final confirmation. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.
