Abstract:Recent years have witnessed a growing interesting in developing automatic 3D palmprint recognition systems. The key problem of 3D palmprint recognition is to contrive an effective representation. In this paper, we propose a 3D palmprint recognition method by completely fusing of multiple block wise features. First, we propose a shape index multi-direction binary code strategy to extract 2D texture-level features of 3D palmprint. Then, we use the compact surface type binary code scheme to characterize 3D structure-level features of 3D palmprint. Finally, we integrate them together to construct the complete block wise descriptor for 3D palmprint recognition. Experiments conducted on the public available 3D palmprint database validate the effectiveness of our proposed method.
Learning Complete and Discriminative Direction Pattern for Robust Palmprint Recognition

Abstract:Palmprint direction patterns have been widely and successfully used in palmprint recognition methods. Most existing direction-based methods utilize the pre-defined filters to achieve the genuine line responses in the palmprint image, which requires rich prior knowledge and usually ignores the vital direction information. In addition, some line responses influenced by noise will degrade the recognition accuracy. Furthermore, how to extract the discriminative features to make the palmprint more separable is also a dilemma for improving the recognition performance. To solve these problems, we propose to learn complete and discriminative direction patterns in this study. We first extract the complete and salient local direction patterns, which contains a complete local direction feature (CLDF) and a salient convolution difference feature (SCDF) extracted from the palmprint image. Afterwards, two learning models are proposed to learn sparse and discriminative directions from CLDF and to achieve the underlying structure for the SCDFs in the training samples, respectively. Lastly, the projected CLDF and the projected SCDF are concatenated forming the complete and discriminative direction feature for palmprint recognition. Experimental results on seven palmprint databases, as well as three noisy datasets clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Design and development of efficient and accurate feature descriptors is critical for the success of many computer vision applications. This paper proposes a new feature descriptor, referred to as DoN, for the 2D palmprint matching. The descriptor is extracted for each point on the palmprint. It is based on the ordinal measure which partially describes the difference of the neighboring points' normal vectors. DoN has at least two advantages: 1) it describes the 3D information, which is expected to be highly stable under commonly occurring illumination variations during contactless imaging; 2) the size of DoN for each point is only one bit, which is computationally simple to extract, easy to match, and efficient to storage. We show that such 3D information can be extracted from a single 2D palmprint image. The analysis for the effectiveness of ordinal measure for palmprint matching is also provided. Four publicly available 2D palmprint databases are used to evaluate the effectiveness of DoN, both for identification and the verification. Our method on all these databases achieves the state-of-the-art performance.

Abstract:Palmprint is one of the most reliable features in personal identification because of its stability and uniqueness. This paper proposed a novel palmprint recognition algorithm based on principal lines: a new irregular geometrical shape was employed to get valid palmprint region, which decreased the influence of large noises; not only structure feature, but also intension information were included in the final extracted principal lines, which provides much sufficient clues for palmprint recognition; the Probability Feature Image(PFI) was used in order to suppress random noises in feature image; features from several training samples were merged into one template, which guaranteed the integrity of feature; fuzzy logic was employed in matching algorithm. The high recognition rates obtained in the experiments show the efficiency of proposed algorithm.

Abstract:This paper introduces a generalized palmprint identification framework to unify several state-of-art 2D and 3D palmprint methods. Through this framework, we argue that the methods employing one-to-one matching strategy and binary representation for feature are more effective for palmprint identification. The analysis for the first argument is based on a statistical matching model and is supported by outperforming results on several publicly available 2D palmprpint databases. These two arguments are further evaluated for 3D palmprint matching and used to introduce a new method for encoding 3D palmprint feature. The proposed 3D feature is binary and more efficiently computed. It encodes the 3D shape of palmprint to either convex or concave. The experimental results on two publicly available, from contactless and contact-base 3D palmprint database of 177 and 200 subjects, respectively, outperform the state-of-the-art methods. This paper also provides our palmprint matching algorithm(s) in public domain, unlike the previous work in this area, which will help to further advance research efforts in this area.

Abstract:Palmprint directions have been proved to be one of the most effective features for palmprint recognition. However, most existing direction-based palmprint descriptors are hand-craft designed and require strong prior knowledge. In this paper, we propose a discriminant direction binary code (DDBC) learning method for palmprint recognition. Specifically, for each palmprint image, we first calculate the convolutions of the direction-based templates and palmprint and form the informative convolution difference vectors by computing the convolution difference between the neighboring directions. Then, we propose a simple yet effective model to learn feature mapping functions that can project these convolution difference vectors into DDBCs. For all training samples: (1) the variance of the learned binary codes is maximized; (2) the intra-class distance of the binary codes is minimized; and (3) the inter-class distance of the binary codes is maximized. Finally, we cluster the block-wise histograms of DDBC forming the discriminant direction binary palmprint descriptor for palmprint recognition. The experimental results on four challenging contactless palmprint databases clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Palmprint recognition has been widely used in security authentication. However, most of the existing palmprint representation methods are focused on a special application scenario using the hand-crafted features from a single-view. If the features become weak as the application scenario changes, the recognition performance will be degraded. To address this problem, we propose to comprehensively exploit palmprint features from multiple views to improve the recognition performance in generic scenarios. In this paper, a novel double-cohesion learning based multiview and discriminant palmprint recognition (DC_MDPR) method is proposed, which imposes a double-cohesion strategy to reduce the inter-view margins for each subject and the intra-class margins for each view. In this way, for each subject, the features from different views can be closer to each other in the binary-label space. Meanwhile, for each view, the features sharing the same label information can move towards each other by imposing a neighbor graph regularization. The proposed method can be flexibly applied to any type of palmprint feature fusion. Moreover, it presents the multiview features in a low-dimensionality sub-space, effectively reducing the computational complexity. Experimental results on various palmprint databases have shown that the proposed method can always achieve the best recognition performance compared to other state-of-the-art algorithms.

Abstract:This study presents a hierarchical palmprint feature extraction and recognition approach based on multi-wavelet and complex network (CN) since they can effectively decrease redundant information and enhance key points of main lines and wrinkles. The palmprint is first pre-filtered and decomposed once using multi-wavelet. Three components (LL1,2,3) corresponding to the pre-filter except for diagonal component are extracted as the elementary features. Second, binary images (BLL1,2,3) are obtained by the average window method using different thresholds. Third, three series of dynamic evolution CN models (the 1st, 2nd, 3rd CNs) are constructed from global to local, which is based on the mosaiced images obtained from BLL1,2,3, BLL1 and four equally divided sub-images of BLL1, respectively. Fourth, statistical features are extracted from complex networks, in which average degree and standard deviation of the degrees are extracted for the 1st CNs and average degrees are extracted for the 2nd and 3rd CNs. Fifth, the fisher feature is extracted using the linear discriminate analysis method. Finally, the nearest neighbourhood classifier is used to recognise palmprint. Based on the CASIA Palmprint Image Database, experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively recognise palmprint with good robustness and overcome the problem of small training samples number.
Palmprint Feature Extraction Based on Multi-wavelet and Complex Network.

Abstract:A new palmprint feature extraction method is proposed by analyzing the characteristics of palmprint images, multi-wavelet analysis and complex network. As we all know, the main lines of a palmprint image is a key to recognize a palmprint, and the other thin and small lines usually may influence the recognitions results relatively small. Motivated by this, the principle line feature extraction is preferred in the palmprint recognition. Multi-wavelet analysis can not only extract the coarse information, but also give the detail information in horizontal and vertical direction. By analyzing the multiwavelet features of palmprint images, it can be seen that the low frequency sub-band image with a multi-wavelet decomposition can present the principle lines very well. So the low frequency component is selected first. By observing the 4 components of the low frequency sub-image, three components except for the diagonal component contain almost all information, so these components are extracted as the elementary feature of a palmprint image. Furthermore, the binarization computation is performed on the 3 extracted features with different thresholds to extract the secondary feature of a palmprint image. Instead of directly using the binary features, the connectivity of the points in the principle line is considered because the relative correlation of the principal lines is also a key factor to recognize a palmprint image. Therefore, a series of dynamic evolution smallworld networks of the feature points in the principal line are built and the final complex network features are extracted, which contain maximum degree, average degree, standard deviation of the degree and contrast. Experimental results on the CASIA Palmprint Image Database show that the proposed method is effective, especially for the little training sample number.

Abstract:This paper introduces a new technique for palmprint recognition based on Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLDA) of Gabor filter bank. This method involves convolving a palmprint image with a bank of Gabor filters at different scales and rotations for robust palmprint features extraction. Once these feature are extracted, FLDA is applied for dimensionality reduction and class separability. Since the palmprint features are derived from the principal lines, wrinkles and texture along the palm area one should carefully consider this fact when selecting the appropriate palm region for feature extraction process in order to enhance recognition accuracy. To address this problem, an improved region of interest (ROI) extraction algorithm is introduced. This algorithm allows for an efficient extraction of the whole palm area ignoring all the undesirable parts, such as the fingers and background. Experiments have shown that the proposed method yields attractive performances evidence by an Equal Error Rate (EER) of 0.03%.
Correntropy-Induced Discriminative Nonnegative Sparse Coding for Robust Palmprint Recognition

Abstract:Palmprint recognition has been widely studied for security applications. However, there is a lack of in-depth investigations on robust palmprint recognition. Regression analysis being intuitively interpretable on robustness design inspires us to propose a correntropy-induced discriminative nonnegative sparse coding method for robust palmprint recognition. Specifically, we combine the correntropy metric and l1-norm to present a powerful error estimator that gains flexibility and robustness to various contaminations by cooperatively detecting and correcting errors. Furthermore, we equip the error estimator with a tailored discriminative nonnegative sparse regularizer to extract significant nonnegative features. We manage to explore an analytical optimization approach regarding this unified scheme and figure out a novel efficient method to address the challenging non-negative constraint. Finally, the proposed coding method is extended for robust multispectral palmprint recognition. Namely, we develop a constrained particle swarm optimizer to search for the feasible parameters to fuse the extracted robust features of different spectrums. Extensive experimental results on both contactless and contact-based multispectral palmprint databases verify the flexibility and robustness of our methods.

Abstract:Biometric computing offers an effective approach to identify personal identity by using individual's unique, reliable and stable physical or behavioral characteristics. This paper describes a new method to authenticate individuals based on palmprint identification and verification. Firstly, a comparative study of palmprint feature extraction is presented. The concepts of texture feature and interesting points are introduced to define palmprint features. A texture-based dynamic selection scheme is proposed to facilitate the fast search for the best matching of the sample in the database in a hierarchical fashion. The global texture energy, which is characterized with high convergence of inner-palm similarities and good dispersion of inter-palm discrimination, is used to guide the dynamic selection of a small set of similar candidates from the database at coarse level for further processing. An interesting point based image matching is performed on the selected similar patterns at fine level for the final confirmation. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method.
Toward Efficient Palmprint Feature Extraction by Learning a Single-Layer Convolution Network

Abstract:In this article, we propose a collaborative palmprint-specific binary feature learning method and a compact network consisting of a single convolution layer for efficient palmprint feature extraction. Unlike most existing palmprint feature learning methods, such as deep-learning, which usually ignore the inherent characteristics of palmprints and learn features from raw pixels of a massive number of labeled samples, palmprint-specific information, such as the direction and edge of patterns, is characterized by forming two kinds of ordinal measure vectors (OMVs). Then, collaborative binary feature codes are jointly learned by projecting double OMVs into complementary feature spaces in an unsupervised manner. Furthermore, the elements of feature projection functions are integrated into OMV extraction filters to obtain a collection of cascaded convolution templates that form a single-layer convolution network (SLCN) to efficiently obtain the binary feature codes of a new palmprint image within a single-stage convolution operation. Particularly, our proposed method can easily be extended to a general version that can efficiently perform feature extraction with more than two types of OMVs. Experimental results on five benchmark databases show that our proposed method achieves very promising feature extraction efficiency for palmprint recognition.

Abstract:In recent years, palmprint recognition has gained increased interest and has been a focus of significant research as a trustworthy personal identification method. The performance of any palmprint recognition system mainly depends on the effectiveness of the utilized feature extraction approach. In this paper, we propose a three-step approach to address the challenging problem of contactless palmprint recognition: (1) a pre-processing, based on median filtering and contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), is used to remove potential noise and equalize the images’ lighting; (2) a multiresolution analysis is applied to extract binarized statistical image features (BSIF) at several discrete wavelet transform (DWT) resolutions; (3) a classification stage is performed to categorize the extracted features into the corresponding class using a K-nearest neighbors (K-NN)-based classifier. The feature extraction strategy is the main contribution of this work; we used the multiresolution analysis to extract the pertinent information from several image resolutions as an alternative to the classical method based on multi-patch decomposition. The proposed approach was thoroughly assessed using two contactless palmprint databases: the Indian Institute of Technology—Delhi (IITD) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Automatisation (CASIA). The results are impressive compared to the current state-of-the-art methods: the Rank-1 recognition rates are 98.77% and 98.10% for the IITD and CASIA databases, respectively.

Triple-Type Feature Extraction for Palmprint Recognition

Abstract:Palmprint recognition has received tremendous research interests due to its outstanding user-friendliness such as non-invasive and good hygiene properties. Most recent palmprint recognition studies such as deep-learning methods usually learn discriminative features from palmprint images, which usually require a large number of labeled samples to achieve a reasonable good recognition performance. However, palmprint images are usually limited because it is relative difficult to collect enough palmprint samples, making most existing deep-learning-based methods ineffective. In this paper, we propose a heuristic palmprint recognition method by extracting triple types of palmprint features without requiring any training samples. We first extract the most important inherent features of a palmprint, including the texture, gradient and direction features, and encode them into triple-type feature codes. Then, we use the block-wise histograms of the triple-type feature codes to form the triple feature descriptors for palmprint representation. Finally, we employ a weighted matching-score level fusion to calculate the similarity between two compared palmprint images of triple-type feature descriptors for palmprint recognition. Extensive experimental results on the three widely used palmprint databases clearly show the promising effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel approach for palmprint identification, which contains two interesting components. Firstly, we propose the directional representation for appearance based approaches. The new representation is robust to drastic illumination changes and preserves important discriminative information for classification. We then generate virtual samples to enlarge the training set to compensate for matching errors caused by large rotations and translations. Based on these two strategies, the recognition performance of representative appearance based approaches can be improved significantly. Secondly, in order to improve the robustness of palmprint identification, we propose a fusion method combining proposed method and orientation based approaches e.g. Competitive Code, which can obtain very low Equal Error Rates.

Abstract:Similarity is one of the most widely used measures in the field of pattern recognition like Euclidean and Mahalanobis distances. Semi-supervised learning is an effective technique for feature extraction, which can make full use of the unlabeled samples for training. In this paper, we incorporate similarity into semi-supervised learning and propose a novel feature extraction approach, named semi-supervised similarity projection analysis (SSP), for palmprint recognition. SSP projects original samples from a high-dimensional space to a low-dimensional subspace in a semi-supervised manner. It can preserve the similarity between intra-class samples and the dissimilarity between inter-class samples, and simultaneously maintain the global dissimilarity among both labeled and unlabeled samples. Experimental results on the HK PolyU palmprint image database demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms several representative unsupervised, supervised and semi-supervised subspace learning methods.

Abstract:Deep palmprint recognition has become an emerging issue with great potential for personal authentication on handheld and wearable consumer devices. Previous studies of palmprint recognition are mainly based on constrained datasets collected by dedicated devices in controlled environments, which has to reduce the flexibility and convenience. In addition, general deep palmprint recognition algorithms are often too heavy to meet the real-time requirements of embedded system. In this paper, a new palmprint benchmark is established, which consists of more than 20,000 images collected by 5 brands of smart phones in an unconstrained manner. Each image has been manually labeled with 14 key points for region of interest (ROI) extraction. Further, the approach called Deep Distillation Hashing (DDH) is proposed as benchmark for efficient deep palmprint recognition. Palmprint images are converted to binary codes to improve the efficiency of feature matching. Derived from knowledge distillation, novel distillation loss functions are constructed to compress deep model to further improve the efficiency of feature extraction on light network. Comprehensive experiments are conducted on both constrained and unconstrained palmprint databases. Using DDH, the accuracy of palmprint identification can be increased by up to 11.37%, and the Equal Error Rate (EER) of palmprint verification can be reduced by up to 3.11%. The results indicate the feasibility of our database, and DDH can outperform other baselines to achieve the state-of-the-art performance.
