Abstract:This study examined the effects of lignin used in EPDM elastomer composites in place of carbon black. For that purpose, lignin was added in amounts of 3.5, 7, and 10.5 phr to investigate the chemical, thermal, rheological, mechanical, and morphological properties of the EPDM elastomers. At the end of the study, tear strength and elongation were enhanced, whereas thermal stability was lowered due to the lignin. The lignin facilitated the vulcanization process and improved the torque values. In the morphology, the lignin was dispersed homogeneously in the matrix, and no voids or cracks were observed except with 10.5 phr. In conclusion, when incorporated at a specified ratio, lignin is economical and provides ecological benefits. Its use as a natural filler can be recommended to automotive industries to provide enhanced properties and ecological properties as a substitute for carbon black.

Investigating Effect of Chrome Tanned Leather Scraps in Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer Rubber

Abstract:Nowadays, amount of chrome tanned leather scraps (CTL) of leather industry is increasing rapidly due to decreasing interest on CTL utilization in related areas. These kind of wastes cause considerable negative environmental effects and therefore CTL producers should find new recycling and/or disposing routes for them. It is speculated that CTL may be a valuable additive in rubber based materials thanks to its similar bending properties. In this study, it is aimed to evaluate rheological, thermal, mechanical, morphological, and aging properties of CTL loaded EPDM based rubber compounds. CTL wastes are incorporated into EPDM in various ratios by using a banbury mixer and two roll mill, subsequently. Rheological measurements show that CTL incorporation does not cause considerable losses in compound properties. Higher glass transition temperatures of CTL containing composites are attributed to restricted chain mobility of EPDM in the composites. Cheap CTL incorporation significantly improves the tear resistance of EPDM before and after thermal aging due to fibrous nature of leather.
Mechanical and rheological properties of calcium carbonate-filled ethylene propylene diene elastomer reinforced by metallic acrylate salt

Abstract:High performance ethylene propylene diene methylene elastomer (EPDM)/calcium carbonate (CaCO3)/aluminum triacrylate (ALTA) hybrids have been prepared by a melt compounding process. The mechanical properties of the peroxide cured EPDM/CaCO3/ALTA vulcanizates were investigated by tensile, hardness, resilience, abrasion and fatigue life tests. The results showed that the ALTA can greatly improve the modulus at 100 %, tensile strength, abrasion resistance and fatigue life of the EPDM/CaCO3/ALTA vulcanizates, while retaining their high elongation at break. ALTA as a reactive filler had accelerating effect on the vulcanization reaction of and increased the crosslink density of the EPDM/CaCO3 composites. This phenomenon is due to increasing the ionic bonds arise from both homo-polymerization of ALTA and graft co-polymerization of it onto the EPDM. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed the presence of ALTA causes to the roughness of the fracture surface of CaCO3-filled EPDM compounds demonstrating high interaction between the fillers and EPDM improved by introduction of ALTA. Dynamic mechanical analysis revealed that the glass transition temperature (Tg) and dissipation peak (tan δ) of EPDM composites decreases with increasing ALTA content. Decrease in tan δ value and inward shifting of Tg were related to improved interaction of filler and EPDM.

Abstract:Carbon black (CB) is a fossil fuel-derived product widely used as reinforcement in the rubber industry despite its pollution potential and its high energy-demanding production. Biochar, on the other hand, is a renewable source of carbon recently studied for the partial substitution of CB in elastomeric materials. Aramid pulp/fibers have also been used in a variety of applications in this sector, usually after a surface treatment. In this work, the use of aramid pulp (AP) and biochar in the preparation of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) composites and hybrid composites has been studied. The 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate ionic liquid (IL) was used as compatibilizer in AP, and the rubber-filler interaction was studied via thermal, rheometric, mechanical, and swelling analyses. The biochar-EPDM and the reference CB-EDPM compounds showed similar hardness, modulus at 50 % strain and tear strength results. Among the tested fillers, AP was identified as the most effective to obtain EPDM composites with enhanced properties. A synergistic effect of biochar and IL-treated AP was found, resulting in higher tensile strength for the hybrid formulation (EPDM/Bio05AP05IL) compared to those with just biochar or CB, and reasonable strain at break. In all, the hybrid composites of EPDM reinforced with biochar and AP showed the potential to partially or fully replace CB formulations.

Abstract:Research was undertaken to explore the alteration of natural halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) using a blend of resorcinol and hexamethylenetetramine (RH), (γ-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES), and diethoxydimethyl silane (DMS). This investigation delved into the impact of incorporating various proportions of RH-modified HNTs (RH-HNTs), APTES-modified HNTs (APTES-HNTs), DMS-modified HNTs (DMS-HNTs), and unmodified HNTs into ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) for their potential as seal materials. The study assessed key properties such as tensile strength, stress at 100% elongation, elongation at break, compression set, hardness, and swelling and abrasion resistance to gauge the influence of HNT additions. As nanofiller content increased, the crosslinking rate rose, while scorch time and optimum cure time decreased. Findings indicated that incorporating nanofillers at 6 phr compositions notably enhanced composite strength initially, with a subsequent slight reduction. However, rebound resilience diminished with increasing filler content, though composite hardness experienced a slight improvement. Mole percent uptake decreased, particularly at higher filler loadings. Notably, systems containing 6 phr RH-HNTs exhibited a 140% increase in tensile strength. FESEM micrographs depicted a rough fracture surface with well-dispersed nanofillers within EPDM/NBR. Additionally, compression set data illustrated enhanced composite performance under compression, crucial for seal applications.

Abstract:The escalating demand for sustainable rubber products has spurred research into alternative reinforcing fillers, driven by concerns regarding the detrimental effects of using conventional fillers like carbon black and silica. In this investigation, nano-crystalline cellulose (NCC), derived from micro crystalline cellulose (MCC), sourced from sugarcane bagasse via acid hydrolysis, serves as a bio-filler to reinforce Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (NBR) matrices. NBR-NCC nano-composites were prepared using a two-roll mill, varying NCC from 1–5 parts per hundred rubber matrices, followed by hot press curing. NCC and NBR-NCC nano-composites were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), curing characteristics, thermo-mechanical testing, thermal aging and motor oil resistance. Chemical interactions between the NCC and NBR matrix were verified with FTIR. The SEM images of the NCC showed a combination of rod-like and spherical morphologies and a homogenous dispersion of NCC in NBR-NCC nano-composites with some agglomeration, notably at higher percentages of NCC. It is shown that the cure time decreases with increasing NCC loading which mimics a shorter industrial production cycle. The results also showed an increase in tensile strength, hardness, oil resistance and a rise in degradation temperature when compared to NBR at approximately 34%, 36%, 38% and 32 °C, respectively, at 3 phr NCC loading. Furthermore, NBR-NCC nano-composites showed a lower decrease in mechanical properties after aging when compared to NBR. The findings of this research suggest that the NBR-NCC nano-composites may find applications in high oil resistance seals and rubber gloves where higher thermal stability is strictly required.

Abstract:Abstract Crosslinked natural rubber (NR)/microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) composite was prepared by dry mixing of NR with MCC extracted from cotton fiber. MCC was first extracted from cotton fiber by acid hydrolysis processing, then applied to block natural rubber as a reinforcement. MCC grafted maleic anhydride (MA) was also synthesized and applied to the composites to improve the compatibility between natural rubber and cellulose. Obtained cellulose samples were subjected to infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to confirm the purity of cellulose structure and the presence of MA grafted on MCC chains. X‐ray spectroscopy (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were investigated as well to see if there was any important change after modification. NR containing microcrystalline cellulose was formulated with vulcanizing agents and microcrystalline cellulose grafted MA for characterization. Micro‐scale dispersion of microcrystalline cellulose was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). MCC showed positive contributions to tensile strength and thermal properties of composites as well. Mechanical properties of vulcanized rubber containing microcrystalline cellulose grafted MA gave a slightly better value compared to the reference sample without adding of the compatible agent. The presence of reinforcements helped NR composites to reduce solvent uptake, however there was no change in tensile strength after aging test.

Abstract:The comparision of the tensile strength of our work and previous works. It has attracted tremendous attention for replacing petroleum‐based carbon black or mineral fillers with renewable, biology‐based and low‐cost cellulose. However, the reinforcing effect of cellulose, especially at the microscale, is still a great challenge in the polymer industry. In this work, a feasible surface modification method for microcrystalline cellulose powder (MCC) in all solid states is proposed by using rubber accelerators N‐cyclohexyl benzothiazole‐2‐sulphenamidee (CBS) and 2,2′‐dibenzothiazoledisulfide (DM). These accelerators not only accelerate the sulfur crosslink of nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), but also graft to rubber molecular chains and form hydrogen bonds with MCC, resulting in good interfacial interaction and good dispersion of MCC in the NBR matrix. As a consequence, the tensile strength and elongation at break of NBR/10MCC reach up to 20.12 MPa and 511%, respectively, which are the highest values of NBR/MCC or cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) composites we can find in the world and are comparable to those of carbon black or mineral fillers. This provides a more effective and environmentally friendly way of using MCC or CNCs in the polymer industry. Highlights Microcrystalline cellulose powder can reinforce NBR. Hydrogen bonds have been established between accelerators and MCC. The tensile strength of NBR/10MCC composite reaches 20 MPa. The reinforcing mechanism is ascribed to the immobilized rubber layer.

Abstract:Illustrating the mechanism of ECD by CB N550 and ECD protection by CB spheron 6000 in EPDM composites. In the present study, a peroxide‐cured ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber composite with a non‐conductive path achieved through the use of a special‐grade carbon black, resistant to electrochemical degradation, for automotive applications, especially in the manufacturing of radiator coolant hoses, has been developed. The most significant aspect of this study is that the developed composite exhibits optimized physico‐mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, and compression set, along with considerable thermal stability and cold flexibility. Both sulfur‐cured and peroxide‐vulcanized EPDM composites were prepared, and the final validation of the composite was obtained through a comprehensive comparison of these properties. The composite's stability was confirmed through heat aging measurements and glycol‐water coolant immersion tests. Furthermore, the thermal behavior of the composite was analyzed using thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The novel composite was characterized through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) studies, and its surface morphology was examined via Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE‐SEM). The cold flexibility crack formation test was conducted in accordance with ASTM D 2137, and the electrochemical degradation (ECD) resistance test was carried out following SAE J 1684 method 2. The results indicate that the developed composite remained free from crack formation during these tests. Highlights Novel EPDM composite resists ECD in radiator hoses. Optimized physico‐mechanical properties achieved. Thorough validation of sulfur versus peroxide curing. Successful prevention of crack formation. Comprehensive analysis: TGA, DSC, FE‐SEM, FTIR.

Abstract:ABSTRACT In recent years, cellulose fibers have attracted considerable attention as biofillers for natural rubber (NR) composites. However, neat cellulose cannot be used as a substitute for conventional fillers due to its poor compatibility with NR. Therefore, a new surface treatment via maleic anhydride grafted to polyisoprene (MAPI) in solution was developed to improve the filler–matrix interaction. Different contents of carbon black (CB) and cellulose fibers (before and after modification) were used as a hybrid filler system to investigate the possibility of CB substitution in NR composites. First, contact angle, Fourier transformed infrared spectrometry (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques were used to confirm the successful cellulose surface treatment. Second, morphological analysis, Payne effect, and swelling behavior of the rubber compounds in toluene confirmed the effect of cellulose treatment on improving the interfacial filler–matrix adhesion. Finally, the results showed that the composite filled with 20 phr modified cellulose and 20 phr CB (50% replacement of CB) exhibited even better results than the composite filled with 40 phr of CB, since the tensile strength was only 7% lower, but the elongation at break, tensile modulus at 100%, and storage modulus at 25 °C were respectively 35%, 24%, and 22% higher.

Mechanical Aging Test and Sealing Performance of Thermoplastic Vulcanizate as Sealing Gasket in Automotive Fuel Cell Applications

Abstract:Ethylene-propylene-diene monomer (EPDM) rubber is one of the rapidly developing synthetic rubbers for use as a gasket material in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell applications. Despite its excellent elastic and sealing properties, EPDM faces challenges such as molding processability and recycling ability. To overcome these challenges, thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV), which comprises vulcanized EPDM in polypropylene matrix, was investigated as a gasket material for PEM fuel cell applications. TPV showed better long-term stability in terms of tension and compression set behaviors under accelerated aging conditions than EPDM. Additionally, TPV exhibited significantly higher crosslinking density and surface hardness than EPDM, regardless of the test temperature and aging time. TPV and EPDM showed similar leakage rates for the entire range of test inlet pressure values, regardless of the applied temperature. Therefore, we can conclude that TPV exhibits a similar sealing capability with more stable mechanical properties compared with commercialized EPDM gaskets in terms of He leakage performance.

Abstract:The most widely used filler in EPDM-based thermal insulation materials is asbestos which is hazardous to health and environment. The main motivation of this study was to develop improved EPDM-based materials by partially or completely replacing asbestos with other fillers. EPDM-Esprene501A and EPDM-Keltan®4869DE were used and the effect of three fillers (vulkasil-C, asbestos, carbon fiber fabric) on mechanical, ablative, physical, thermal, and electrical performances have been investigated. Samples were divided into phase -1, -2, and -3 by compounding EPDM with various percentages of fillers and other necessary ingredients. It was observed that asbestos and carbon fiber in the absence of vulkasil-C did not import enough reinforcement to EPDM-matrix. Experimental evidence showed that presence of vulkasil-C has not only enhanced mechanical properties but also improved thermal and ablation performance of EPDM-based composites. The swelling index was found comparatively lower with vulkasil-C than that with other fillers. Among two EPDMs, EPDM-Esprene based composites have shown comparatively better performance. Among all (phase-1–3) samples, E100K0VA (phase-2) has shown greater mechanical (stress 3.89 MPa; strain 774%), ablative (linear 0.1 mm/s; mass 0.05 g/s), and thermal (material left 91.0%) properties. Overall findings indicated improved properties of EPDM in the presence of vulkasil-C and may help to develop better heat resistant materials.

Abstract:In this work, the effect of using of dicumyl-peroxide (DCP) (2, 5 & 8 phr) and co-agent triallyl-cyanurate (TAC) (2, 4 & 6 phr) as cross-linking system as well as multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (5, 8 και 10 phr) as a filler, for ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (EPDM) was investigated. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was employed in order to study the progress of the cross-linking reaction, based on the exothermic vulcanization peaks of isothermal (at 160, 170, 180, 190 °C) and non-isothermal experiments (with heating rates 5, 10, 25, 50 °C min −1 ). The autocatalytic model was successfully applied to the results of isothermal experiments and the activation energy (E a ) of the reaction was calculated, based on the Arrhenius equation. The Ozawa-Kissinger equations were also applied to the data obtained from the non-isothermal study. From the results obtained from isothermal DSC experiments, an increase was observed in the reaction rates accompanied with a decrease in E a with the increase of DCP content, whereas a proportional relationship between TAC content and the enthalpy and E a of the reaction was recorded. The incorporation of MWCNT's in EPDM increased its E a . From the non-isothermal DSC experiments, a significant increase in the enthalpy and E a of the cross-linking reaction was observed at higher DCP content, whereas TAC content did not show any notable effect on the reaction. Based on the results of this research, it is concluded that the increase of peroxide content facilitates the vulcanization of EPDM, whereas inhibition was observed by the incorporation of MWCNT's.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Carbon black (CB) fillers are widely used in elastomer compounds to improve their mechanical performance. Extensive studies conducted over more than 80 yr now have provided a satisfactory understanding of the influence of CB content on the mechanical properties of elastomers. However, in the majority of the studies devoted to aging, similar elastomer formulations with different CB contents are often considered as independent materials, which hinders the applicability of structure–property relationships. Herein, we reconcile the effects of aging and CB content by investigating the oxidative aging at 80 °C in air of a polychloroprene rubber with four different CB contents (from 10 to 45 parts per hundred of rubber). Both macromolecular network and mechanical properties are determined via swelling, uniaxial tensile, and fatigue tests. It is shown that the response of the materials can be decomposed into the contributions of elastomer matrix and fillers. The behavior of the matrix during aging is the same regardless of the CB content. Relationships between the microstructural characteristics of the matrix and the local mechanical properties are then derived. Their relevance for aged materials and for a wide range of CB content are demonstrated. Oxidative ageing is performed on polychloroprene at different carbon black contents.The apparent crosslink density is related to the one of the unfilled rubber matrix.Crosslinking of the matrix behaves the same independently of fillers content.Mechanical properties are linked to the matrix network through ageing.At moderate contents, fillers effect follows established reinforcement theories.

Abstract:The dynamic crosslinking method has been widely used to prepare rubber/plastic blends with thermoplastic properties, and the rubber phase is crosslinked in these blends. Both polyolefin elastomer (POE) and ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) can be crosslinked, which is different from usual dynamic crosslinking components. In this paper, dynamic crosslinked POE/EPDM blends were prepared. For POE/EPDM blends without dynamic crosslinking, EPDM can play a nucleation role, leading to POE crystallizing at a higher temperature. After dynamic crosslinking, the crosslinking points hinder the mobility of POE chains, resulting in smaller crystals, but having too many crosslinking points suppresses POE crystallization. Synchrotron radiation studies show that phase separation occurs and phase regions form in non-crosslinked blends. After crosslinking, crosslinking points connecting EPDM and part of POE chains, enabling more POE to enter the EPDM phase and thus weakening phase separation, indicates that dynamic crosslinking improves the compatibility of POE/EPDM, also evidenced by a lower β conversion temperature and higher α conversion temperature than neat POE from dynamic mechanical analysis. Moreover, crosslinking networks hinder the crystal fragmentation during stretching and provide higher strength, resulting in 8.3% higher tensile strength of a 10 wt% EPDM blend than neat POE and almost the same elongation at break. Though excessive crosslinking points offer higher strength, they weaken the elongation at break.

Abstract:Flax fibre-reinforced bio-composites are developed using both unmodified petroleum-based epoxy and Epoxy Methyl Ricinoleate (EMR) toughened epoxy modified with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) as the base matrix. Base-catalyzed transesterification is employed for the synthesis of EMR as a low-viscosity reactive green monomer for the modification of petroleum-based epoxy. MCC is incorporated into the EMR-modified epoxy through mechanical stirring and subsequent sonication at loading rates of 1%, 3%, and 5% by weight. The compression molding technique was employed to prepare the composites. The results show an enhancement in tensile strength, modulus, impact strength, and inter-laminar shear strength values up to 19%, 34%, 34.2%, and 22.7%, respectively for MCC filled EMR toughened epoxy composite compared to neat epoxy composite. The storage and loss moduli, as revealed by the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), also demonstrate improvement for the 3% MCC-C composite signifying the improved fibre/matrix bonding. The low-velocity impact test at 10 J and 20 J for non-perforation and perforation conditions was also performed on the composites. The MCC-incorporated EMR-modified composite demonstrated the highest low velocity impact resistance among all other bio-composites, highlighting its potential for use in semi-structural applications due to the enhanced interfacial adhesion. The SEM analysis revealed that the fibre surface of MCC-modified EPEMR20 composites exhibited surface damage, and adherence of MCC fillers and matrix fragments, indicating superior adhesion to the matrix system.

Abstract:Synergistic effects of silane‐modified carbon black and nano‐silica hybrid fillers on the performance of EPDM rubber composites. This study assesses the effectiveness of a specially developed surface‐modified carbon black, both on its own and in combination with nano‐silica, as a hybrid filler for ethylene–propylene–diene monomer (EPDM) rubber compounds. The modification process, which included treatment with a silane coupling agent, resulted in enhanced curing characteristics. The ∆Torque values for compounds incorporating the modified carbon black exceeded those of other formulations by 25.85%. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis demonstrated improved filler dispersion and better compatibility between rubber and filler due to the surface modification. The silane‐modified carbon black showed considerable enhancements in mechanical properties, particularly in tear resistance, with increases in tensile and tear strength of 22.46% and 34.86%, respectively, following surface treatment. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) indicated the influence of both surface modification and filler type, revealing that the combination of modified carbon black and nano‐silica achieved a reduction in rolling resistance of 20.41% and enhanced ice and wet grip performance by 7.95%. Additionally, modified carbon black displayed varying effects on the glass transition temperature. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) confirmed that the thermal stability of the compounds was consistent, while solvent resistance improved with surface modification, as shown by swelling ratios. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that the surface modification of carbon black positively influences the elasticity and chain mobility of the rubber compounds studied. In conclusion, the careful selection and optimization of filler materials and their modifications are essential for customizing the properties of rubber compounds to satisfy specific performance criteria and applications. Highlights Promising EPDM compounds were prepared with Silane‐Modified CB and Nano‐Silica. Silane‐modified CB effectively improved the curing properties of the EPDM compound. The ΔTorque and cross‐link density of modified CB/EPDM show the highest value. Modified CB/Nano‐Silica/EPDM exhibited significant improvement in tear strength. Modified CB/Nano‐silica/EPDM have lower rolling resistance and higher wet grip.

Abstract:Elastomers which are strong, tough, and resistant to tearing, are highly attractive for engineering applications such as conveyer belts, high-performance seals, tires, and soft robotics. Enhancing these properties for natural rubber materials is possible by utilizing nanoscale fillers, however the nanocomposite approach remains challenging because (a) nanofillers can impede latex molecular crosslinking, and (b) reduce the material’s inherent elasticity and compliance. This study demonstrates an approach to prepare ultra-strong, tear-resistant natural rubber nanocomposites using cellulose nanofibers decorated with nanoscale lignin. The reinforcement of latex with 0.1 wt% cellulose nanofibre compatibilized with 0.5 wt% lignin resulted in a 256% improvement in tear strength, 95% in tensile strength, and 50% in toughness, while retaining the elongation at break. Such a simultaneous improvement in tensile and tear properties has not been previously achieved through the latex casting method with any other fillers, and herein it is attributed to the nanoscale reinforcement efficiency of nanofibre coupled with enhanced interfacial adhesion between nanofibers and NR latex with the introduction of nanoscale lignin. This compatibilization approach has also resulted in improved resilience in the nanocomposites, as evidenced by the cycling loading and unloading analysis.

Abstract:Effects of adding microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) were evaluated relative to the mechanical, thermal, morphological, and structural properties of rigid polyurethanes (rPUs). The composites were prepared with the blending of polyols/isocyanates and the cellulosic fillers at 0.25%, 0.5%, and 1% loadings. Scanning electron microscopic images showed that the samples had micro-scaled porosity, with cell sizes ranging from 250 to 800 nm. The fillers improved the mechanical strengths and modulus of neat rPUs due to the presence of the nano-sized cells in rPUs matrix. The addition of both fillers generally did not provide a positive effect on the thermal properties, and the weight loss generally increased while the loading rate of the fillers was increased from 0.25% to 1%. The samples had two small crystalline peaks at 18° and 19° according to the X-ray diffraction analysis. From the results, it can be said that the presence of both fillers generally improved all properties of the neat rPUs, and the effects of CNC on the properties were higher than MCC due to both lower particle size and the higher crystallinity of CNC.
