Abstract:How do we most effectively treat a disease or condition? Ideally, we could consult a database of evidence gleaned from clinical trials to answer such questions. Unfortunately, no such database exists; clinical trial results are instead disseminated primarily via lengthy natural language articles. Perusing all such articles would be prohibitively time-consuming for healthcare practitioners; they instead tend to depend on manually compiled systematic reviews of medical literature to inform care. NLP may speed this process up, and eventually facilitate immediate consult of published evidence. The Evidence Inference dataset was recently released to facilitate research toward this end. This task entails inferring the comparative performance of two treatments, with respect to a given outcome, from a particular article (describing a clinical trial) and identifying supporting evidence. For instance: Does this article report that chemotherapy performed better than surgery for five-year survival rates of operable cancers? In this paper, we collect additional annotations to expand the Evidence Inference dataset by 25\%, provide stronger baseline models, systematically inspect the errors that these make, and probe dataset quality. We also release an abstract only (as opposed to full-texts) version of the task for rapid model prototyping. Automated tabulation of clinical trial results: A joint entity and relation extraction approach with transformer-based language representations

Abstract:Evidence-based medicine, the practice in which healthcare professionals refer to the best available evidence when making decisions, forms the foundation of modern healthcare. However, it relies on labour-intensive systematic reviews, where domain specialists must aggregate and extract information from thousands of publications, primarily of randomised controlled trial (RCT) results, into evidence tables. This paper investigates automating evidence table generation by decomposing the problem across two language processing tasks: \textit{named entity recognition}, which identifies key entities within text, such as drug names, and \textit{relation extraction}, which maps their relationships for separating them into ordered tuples. We focus on the automatic tabulation of sentences from published RCT abstracts that report the results of the study outcomes. Two deep neural net models were developed as part of a joint extraction pipeline, using the principles of transfer learning and transformer-based language representations. To train and test these models, a new gold-standard corpus was developed, comprising almost 600 result sentences from six disease areas. This approach demonstrated significant advantages, with our system performing well across multiple natural language processing tasks and disease areas, as well as in generalising to disease domains unseen during training. Furthermore, we show these results were achievable through training our models on as few as 200 example sentences. The final system is a proof of concept that the generation of evidence tables can be semi-automated, representing a step towards fully automating systematic reviews.

Abstract:Although randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard for establishing the efficacy and safety of a medical treatment, real-world evidence (RWE) generated from real-world data has been vital in postapproval monitoring and is being promoted for the regulatory process of experimental therapies. An emerging source of real-world data is electronic health records (EHRs), which contain detailed information on patient care in both structured (eg, diagnosis codes) and unstructured (eg, clinical notes and images) forms. Despite the granularity of the data available in EHRs, the critical variables required to reliably assess the relationship between a treatment and clinical outcome are challenging to extract. To address this fundamental challenge and accelerate the reliable use of EHRs for RWE, we introduce an integrated data curation and modeling pipeline consisting of 4 modules that leverage recent advances in natural language processing, computational phenotyping, and causal modeling techniques with noisy data. Module 1 consists of techniques for data harmonization. We use natural language processing to recognize clinical variables from RCT design documents and map the extracted variables to EHR features with description matching and knowledge networks. Module 2 then develops techniques for cohort construction using advanced phenotyping algorithms to both identify patients with diseases of interest and define the treatment arms. Module 3 introduces methods for variable curation, including a list of existing tools to extract baseline variables from different sources (eg, codified, free text, and medical imaging) and end points of various types (eg, death, binary, temporal, and numerical). Finally, module 4 presents validation and robust modeling methods, and we propose a strategy to create gold-standard labels for EHR variables of interest to validate data curation quality and perform subsequent causal modeling for RWE. In addition to the workflow proposed in our pipeline, we also develop a reporting guideline for RWE that covers the necessary information to facilitate transparent reporting and reproducibility of results. Moreover, our pipeline is highly data driven, enhancing study data with a rich variety of publicly available information and knowledge sources. We also showcase our pipeline and provide guidance on the deployment of relevant tools by revisiting the emulation of the Clinical Outcomes of Surgical Therapy Study Group Trial on laparoscopy-assisted colectomy versus open colectomy in patients with early-stage colon cancer. We also draw on existing literature on EHR emulation of RCTs together with our own studies with the Mass General Brigham EHR.

Developmental risk factors for unintentional childhood poisoning.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To identify main risk factors for unintentional childhood poisoning in Ahwaz, Iran and to suggest possible causes and preventative measures. METHODS This is an epidemiological description and a case-control study. The study was undertaken in Ahwaz, Iran in 1996-1997. Cases were 100 children who were taken to one of the 17 Accident and Emergency Departments due to poisoning. For every case two controls were selected. Age, gender, hospital and date of attendance to Accident and Emergency Department were matched between cases and controls. All parents of the children were interviewed by using a questionnaire that included demographic and poisoning characteristic information. RESULTS Children without adult supervision (odds ratio = 4.8), and those with previous poisoning (odds ratio = 5.2) were at increased risk of poisoning (P < 0.05). Drug poisoning was more common among children (60%), and most poisoning occurred inside the home (89%). Boys (65%), and children aged 2-4 years (79%) had more poisoning than others. In 75% of cases, poisonous products were accessible. CONCLUSION Adequate parental supervision and safe packing, storage and disposal of potentially hazardous substances could be the most important activities for prevention of childhood poisoning. Furthermore, manufactures and traders must by law put certain toxic household products and drugs in child resistant containers, and mark toxic medicines with warning labels or signs.
Aliababa DAMO Academy at TREC Precision Medicine 2020: State-of-the-art Evidence Retriever for Precision Medicine with Expert-in-the-loop Active Learning

Abstract:This paper describes the submissions of Alibaba DAMO Academy to the TREC Precision Medicine (PM) Track in 2020, which achieve state-of-the-art performance in the evidence quality assessment. The focus of the TREC PM Track is to retrieve academic papers that report critical clinical evidence for or against a given treatment in a population specified by its disease and gene mutation. We use a two-step approach that includes: 1) a baseline retriever using query expansion with Elasticsearch (ES) and 2) an automatic or expert-in-the-loop reranker: the automatic re-ranker uses features of the ES scores, pre-trained BioBERT scores, publication type scores and citation count scores; the expert-in-the-loop re-ranker uses expert annotations, fine-tuned BioBERT as well as features used in the automatic re-ranker. For the expert-in-the-loop re-ranker, we use a novel active learning annotation strategy that is sample-efficient: at each iteration of the annotation, 1) we fine-tune the BioBERT using all expert annotations of query-document relevance; 2) we let human experts annotate the actual relevance of the most relevant unannotated query-document pairs predicted by the fine-tuned BioBERT. Our submissions outperform the median topic-wise scores in the phase 1 assessment for general relevance and achieve state-of-the-art performance in the phase 2 assessment for evidence quality. Our analyses show that evidence quality is a distinct aspect than the general relevance, and thus additional modeling of it is necessary to assist IR for Evidence-based Precision Medicine
Automated information extraction model enhancing traditional Chinese medicine RCT evidence extraction (Evi-BERT): algorithm development and validation

Abstract:Background: In the field of evidence-based medicine, randomized controlled trials (RCTs) are of critical importance for writing clinical guidelines and providing guidance to practicing physicians. Currently, RCTs rely heavily on manual extraction, but this method has data breadth limitations and is less efficient. Objectives: To expand the breadth of data and improve the efficiency of obtaining clinical evidence, here, we introduce an automated information extraction model for traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) RCT evidence extraction. Methods: We adopt the Evidence-Bidirectional Encoder Representation from Transformers (Evi-BERT) for automated information extraction, which is combined with rule extraction. Eleven disease types and 48,523 research articles from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), WanFang Data, and VIP databases were selected as the data source for extraction. We then constructed a manually annotated dataset of TCM clinical literature to train the model, including ten evidence elements and 24,244 datapoints. We chose two models, BERT-CRF and BiLSTM-CRF, as the baseline, and compared the training effects with Evi-BERT and Evi-BERT combined with rule expression (RE). Results: We found that Evi-BERT combined with RE achieved the best performance (precision score = 0.926, Recall = 0.952, F1 score = 0.938) and had the best robustness. We totally summarized 113 pieces of rule datasets in the regulation extraction procedure. Our model dramatically expands the amount of data that can be searched and greatly improves efficiency without losing accuracy. Conclusion: Our work provided an intelligent approach to extracting clinical evidence for TCM RCT data. Our model can help physicians reduce the time spent reading journals and rapidly speed up the screening of clinical trial evidence to help generate accurate clinical reference guidelines. Additionally, we hope the structured clinical evidence and structured knowledge extracted from this study will help other researchers build large language models in TCM.
Inferring Which Medical Treatments Work from Reports of Clinical Trials

Abstract:How do we know if a particular medical treatment actually works? Ideally one would consult all available evidence from relevant clinical trials. Unfortunately, such results are primarily disseminated in natural language scientific articles, imposing substantial burden on those trying to make sense of them. In this paper, we present a new task and corpus for making this unstructured evidence actionable. The task entails inferring reported findings from a full-text article describing a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with respect to a given intervention, comparator, and outcome of interest, e.g., inferring if an article provides evidence supporting the use of aspirin to reduce risk of stroke, as compared to placebo. We present a new corpus for this task comprising 10,000+ prompts coupled with full-text articles describing RCTs. Results using a suite of models --- ranging from heuristic (rule-based) approaches to attentive neural architectures --- demonstrate the difficulty of the task, which we believe largely owes to the lengthy, technical input texts. To facilitate further work on this important, challenging problem we make the corpus, documentation, a website and leaderboard, and code for baselines and evaluation available at <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://evidence-inference.ebm-nlp.com/" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>.

Abstract:BackgroundClinical notes such as discharge summaries have a semi- or unstructured format. These documents contain information about diseases, treatments, drugs, etc. Extracting meaningful information from them becomes challenging due to their narrative format. In this context, we aimed to compare the automatic extraction capacity of medical entities using two tools: MetaMap and cTAKES.MethodsWe worked with i2b2 (Informatics for Integrating Biology to the Bedside) Obesity Challenge data. Two experiments were constructed. In the first one, only one UMLS concept related with the diseases annotated was extracted. In the second, some UMLS concepts were aggregated.ResultsResults were evaluated with manually annotated medical entities. With the aggregation process the result shows a better improvement. MetaMap had an average of 0.88 in recall, 0.89 in precision, and 0.88 in F-score. With cTAKES, the average of recall, precision and F-score were 0.91, 0.89, and 0.89, respectively.ConclusionsThe aggregation of concepts (with similar and different semantic types) was shown to be a good strategy for improving the extraction of medical entities, and automatic aggregation could be considered in future works.

Abstract:Abstract Motivation With the rapid development of precision medicine, a large amount of health data (such as electronic health records, gene sequencing, medical images, etc.) has been produced. It encourages more and more interest in data-driven insight discovery from these data. A reasonable way to verify the derived insights is by checking evidence from biomedical literature. However, manual verification is inefficient and not scalable. Therefore, an intelligent technique is necessary to solve this problem. Results This article introduces a framework for biomedical evidence engineering, addressing this problem more effectively. The framework consists of a biomedical literature retrieval module and an evidence extraction module. The retrieval module ensembles several methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance in biomedical literature retrieval. A BERT-based evidence extraction model is proposed to extract evidence from literature in response to queries. Moreover, we create a dataset with 1 million examples of biomedical evidence, 10 000 of which are manually annotated. MDACE: MIMIC Documents Annotated with Code Evidence

Abstract:We introduce a dataset for evidence/rationale extraction on an extreme multi-label classification task over long medical documents. One such task is Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC) which has improved significantly in recent years, thanks to advances in machine learning technologies. Yet simply predicting a set of final codes for a patient encounter is insufficient as CAC systems are required to provide supporting textual evidence to justify the billing codes. A model able to produce accurate and reliable supporting evidence for each code would be a tremendous benefit. However, a human annotated code evidence corpus is extremely difficult to create because it requires specialized knowledge. In this paper, we introduce MDACE, the first publicly available code evidence dataset, which is built on a subset of the MIMIC-III clinical records. The dataset -- annotated by professional medical coders -- consists of 302 Inpatient charts with 3,934 evidence spans and 52 Profee charts with 5,563 evidence spans. We implemented several evidence extraction methods based on the EffectiveCAN model (Liu et al., 2021) to establish baseline performance on this dataset. MDACE can be used to evaluate code evidence extraction methods for CAC systems, as well as the accuracy and interpretability of deep learning models for multi-label classification. We believe that the release of MDACE will greatly improve the understanding and application of deep learning technologies for medical coding and document classification.

An annotated corpus of clinical trial publications supporting schema-based relational information extraction

Abstract:Background: The evidence-based medicine paradigm requires the ability to aggregate and compare outcomes of interventions across different trials. This can be facilitated and partially automatized by information extraction systems. In order to support the development of systems that can extract information from published clinical trials at a fine-grained and comprehensive level to populate a knowledge base, we present a richly annotated corpus at two levels. At the first level, entities that describe components of the PICO elements (e.g., population's age and pre-conditions, dosage of a treatment, etc.) are annotated. The second level comprises schema-level (i.e., slot-filling templates) annotations corresponding to complex PICO elements and other concepts related to a clinical trial (e.g. the relation between an intervention and an arm, the relation between an outcome and an intervention, etc.). Results: The final corpus includes 211 annotated clinical trial abstracts with substantial agreement between annotators at the entity and scheme level. The mean Kappa value for the glaucoma and T2DM corpora was 0.74 and 0.68, respectively, for single entities. The micro-averaged F1 score to measure inter-annotator agreement for complex entities (i.e. slot-filling templates) was 0.81.The BERT-base baseline method for entity recognition achieved average micro- F1 scores of 0.76 for glaucoma and 0.77 for diabetes with exact matching. Conclusions: In this work, we have created a corpus that goes beyond the existing clinical trial corpora, since it is annotated in a schematic way that represents the classes and properties defined in an ontology. Although the corpus is small, it has fine-grained annotations and could be used to fine-tune pre-trained machine learning models and transformers to the specific task of extracting information about clinical trial abstracts.For future work, we will use the corpus for training information extraction systems that extract single entities, and predict template slot-fillers (i.e., class data/object properties) to populate a knowledge base that relies on the C-TrO ontology for the description of clinical trials. [On-site measurement of landfill gas yield and verification of IPCC model].

Abstract:In order to obtain the accurate yield of landfill gas in Yulongkeng Landfill, Shenzhen, improved pumping test was conducted. The methane production rates of the influence region were figured out as 14.67 x 10(-5), 9.46 x 10(-5), 9.55 x 10(-5), and 4.28 x 10(-5) m3/(t x h), respectively. According to the methane production rate, the whole methane yield of Yulongkeng Landfill in 2005 was 322 m3/h, which indicated that Yulongkeng Landfill had went into stationary phase and the recycle of landfill gas was not valuable. IPCC model was verified by the measured data. Degradation half life of the waste was the key parameter concerned to the prediction accuracy of IPCC model. In China, the degradable waste in municipal solid waste was mainly kitchen waste leading to a short degradation period, which caused the degradation half life was shorter than the proposed value in IPCC model. For the improvement in prediction accuracy of landfill gas yield, the model parameters should be adopted reasonably based on a full survey of waste characterization in China, which will boost the applicability of IPCC model.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The influences of genomic background are confirmed in more diseases. Immunologic tolerance after intrauterine infection of hepatitis B virus is considered to occur in T cells. Cytokines work effectively in eliminating virus by immune system after hepatitis B virus infection. To explore the relationship between cytokines (tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interferon-gamma, interleukin-4 and interleukin-10), which expressed abnormal quantity in the peripheral blood to intrauterine hepatitis B virus infectious children, gene single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and susceptibility to hepatitis B virus intrauterine infection. METHODS This is a cross sectional study of molecular clinical epidemiology. The subjects in this study were selected from outpatients of hepatitis B vaccine follow-up special clinics of our hospital in the period. According to intrant criteria, the high risk children of hepatitis B virus (HBV) intrauterine infection were divided into immune failure group (group I); and immune effective group (group II) and non high risk children belonged to the control group. Four gene SNP sites of TNF-alpha -238, IFN-gamma +874, IL-4 -590 and IL-10 -1082 were determined by real-time quantitative fluorescent polymerase chain reaction (PCR). RESULTS The significant differences of TNF-alpha -238 A allele frequency were found between group I and group II (chi(2) = 6.797, P < 0.05) and between group I and the control group (chi(2) = 9.513, P < 0.05). No evident differences of TNF-alpha -238 A were found between group II and control group (chi(2) = 0.047, P > 0.05); the significant differences of IFN-gamma +874 A allele frequency were found between group I and group II (chi(2) = 7.238, P < 0.05), and between group I and the control group (chi(2) = 5.199, P < 0.05). No evident differences were found between group II and the control group (chi(2) = 0.602, P > 0.05); the significant differences of IL-4 -590 C/T allele frequency were not found between group I and group II (chi(2) = 0.632, P > 0.05), also group I and the control group (chi(2) = 0.584, P > 0.05), and the group II and the control group (chi(2) = 0.004, P > 0.05) respectively; The significant differences of IL-10 -1082 G allele frequency were found between group II and group I (chi(2) = 10.359, P < 0.001), and between group II and the controls (chi(2) = 35.418, P < 0.001), but the significant differences were not found between group I and the control group (chi(2) = 1.759, P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study suggested the possibility that the TNF-alpha -238 A allele and IFN-gamma +874 A allele were associated with HBV intrauterine infection. There was no evident relationship between IL-4 -590 C/T allele SNP and susceptibility to HBV intrauterine infection, but the IL-10 -1082 G allele was associated with preventive efficacy to HBV intrauterine infection.

Abstract:A 76-year-old woman was referred to our hospital because of anemia. The laboratory findings revealed hemolysis. Although a direct Coombs test was negative, a high titer of RBC-bound IgG was detected, and a diagnosis of Coombs-negative autoimmune hemolytic anemia was made. She was successfully treated with prednisolone. One year and five months later, she again presented anemia and was diagnosed with pure red cell aplasia. Anti-erythropoietin receptor antibody was detected in the serum. She was treated with cyclosporine and obtained prompt recovery. We herein report this rare case and review the pertinent literature.

Abstract:Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) aims to apply the best available evidence gained from scientific methods to clinical decision making. A generally accepted criterion to formulate evidence is to use the PICO framework, where PICO stands for Problem/Population, Intervention, Comparison, and Outcome. Automatic extraction of PICO-related sentences from medical literature is crucial to the success of many EBM applications. In this work, we present our Aceso<sup>1</sup> system, which automatically generates PICO-based evidence summaries from medical literature. In Aceso, we adopt an active learning paradigm, which helps to minimize the cost of manual labeling and to optimize the quality of summarization with limited labeled data. An UMLS2Vec model is proposed to learn a vector representation of medical concepts in UMLS,<sup>2</sup> and we fuse the embedding of medical knowledge with textual features in summarization. The evaluation shows that our approach is better on identifying PICO sentences against state-of-the-art studies and outperforms baseline methods on producing high-quality evidence summaries.

Abstract:The largest collection of medical evidence in the world is PubMed. However, the significant barrier in accessing and extracting information is information organization. A factor that contributes towards this barrier is managing medical controlled vocabularies that allow us to systematically and consistently organize, index, and search biomedical literature. Additionally, from users' perspective, to ultimately improve access, visualization is likely to play a powerful role. There is a strong link between information organization and information visualization, as many powerful visualizations depend on clustering methods. To improve visualization, therefore, one has to develop concrete and scalable measures for vocabularies used in indexing and their impact on document clustering. The focus of this study is on the development and evaluation of clustering methods. The paper concludes with demonstration of downstream network visualizations and their impact on discovering potentially valuable and latent genetic and molecular associations.

Identifying and Aligning Medical Claims Made on Social Media with Medical Evidence

Abstract:Evidence-based medicine is the practice of making medical decisions that adhere to the latest, and best known evidence at that time. Currently, the best evidence is often found in the form of documents, such as randomized control trials, meta-analyses and systematic reviews. This research focuses on aligning medical claims made on social media platforms with this medical evidence. By doing so, individuals without medical expertise can more effectively assess the veracity of such medical claims. We study three core tasks: identifying medical claims, extracting medical vocabulary from these claims, and retrieving evidence relevant to those identified medical claims. We propose a novel system that can generate synthetic medical claims to aid each of these core tasks. We additionally introduce a novel dataset produced by our synthetic generator that, when applied to these tasks, demonstrates not only a more flexible and holistic approach, but also an improvement in all comparable metrics. Using Meta-Transformers for Multimodal Clinical Decision Support and Evidence-Based Medicine

Abstract:The advancements in computer vision and natural language processing are keys to thriving modern healthcare systems and its applications. Nonetheless, they have been researched and used as separate technical entities without integrating their predictive knowledge discovery when they are combined. Such integration will benefit every clinical/medical problem as they are inherently multimodal - they involve several distinct forms of data, such as images and text. However, the recent advancements in machine learning have brought these fields closer using the notion of meta-transformers. At the core of this synergy is building models that can process and relate information from multiple modalities where the raw input data from various modalities are mapped into a shared token space, allowing an encoder to extract high-level semantic features of the input data. Nerveless, the task of automatically identifying arguments in a clinical/medical text and finding their multimodal relationships remains challenging as it does not rely only on relevancy measures (e.g. how close that text to other modalities like an image) but also on the evidence supporting that relevancy. Relevancy based on evidence is a normal practice in medicine as every practice is an evidence-based. In this article we are experimenting with meta-transformers that can benefit evidence based predictions. In this article, we are experimenting with variety of fine tuned medical meta-transformers like PubmedCLIP, CLIPMD, BiomedCLIP-PubMedBERT and BioCLIP to see which one provide evidence-based relevant multimodal information. Our experimentation uses the TTi-Eval open-source platform to accommodate multimodal data embeddings. This platform simplifies the integration and evaluation of different meta-transformers models but also to variety of datasets for testing and fine tuning. Additionally, we are conducting experiments to test how relevant any multimodal prediction to the published medical literature especially those that are published by PubMed. Our experimentations revealed that the BiomedCLIP-PubMedBERT model provide more reliable evidence-based relevance compared to other models based on randomized samples from the ROCO V2 dataset or other multimodal datasets like MedCat. In this next stage of this research we are extending the use of the winning evidence-based multimodal learning model by adding components that enable medical practitioner to use this model to predict answers to clinical questions based on sound medical questioning protocol like PICO and based on standardized medical terminologies like UMLS.
Extraction of evidence tables from abstracts of randomized clinical trials using a maximum entropy classifier and global constraints

Abstract:Systematic use of the published results of randomized clinical trials is increasingly important in evidence-based medicine. In order to collate and analyze the results from potentially numerous trials, evidence tables are used to represent trials concerning a set of interventions of interest. An evidence table has columns for the patient group, for each of the interventions being compared, for the criterion for the comparison (e.g. proportion who survived after 5 years from treatment), and for each of the results. Currently, it is a labour-intensive activity to read each published paper and extract the information for each field in an evidence table. There have been some NLP studies investigating how some of the features from papers can be extracted, or at least the relevant sentences identified. However, there is a lack of an NLP system for the systematic extraction of each item of information required for an evidence table. We address this need by a combination of a maximum entropy classifier, and integer linear programming. We use the later to handle constraints on what is an acceptable classification of the features to be extracted. With experimental results, we demonstrate substantial advantages in using global constraints (such as the features describing the patient group, and the interventions, must occur before the features describing the results of the comparison).

Abstract:Abstruse learning algorithms and complex datasets increasingly characterize modern clinical decision support systems (CDSS). As a result, clinicians cannot easily or rapidly scrutinize the CDSS recommendation when facing a difficult diagnosis or treatment decision in practice. Over-trust or under-trust are frequent. Prior research has explored supporting such assessments by explaining DST data inputs and algorithmic mechanisms. This paper explores a different approach: Providing precisely relevant, scientific evidence from biomedical literature. We present a proof-of-concept system, Clinical Evidence Engine, to demonstrate the technical and design feasibility of this approach across three domains (cardiovascular diseases, autism, cancer). Leveraging Clinical BioBERT, the system can effectively identify clinical trial reports based on lengthy clinical questions (e.g., "risks of catheter infection among adult patients in intensive care unit who require arterial catheters, if treated with povidone iodine-alcohol"). This capability enables the system to identify clinical trials relevant to diagnostic/treatment hypotheses -- a clinician's or a CDSS's. Further, Clinical Evidence Engine can identify key parts of a clinical trial abstract, including patient population (e.g., adult patients in intensive care unit who require arterial catheters), intervention (povidone iodine-alcohol), and outcome (risks of catheter infection). This capability opens up the possibility of enabling clinicians to 1) rapidly determine the match between a clinical trial and a clinical question, and 2) understand the result and contexts of the trial without extensive reading. We demonstrate this potential by illustrating two example use scenarios of the system. We discuss the idea of designing DST explanations not as specific to a DST or an algorithm, but as a domain-agnostic decision support infrastructure.
