Abstract:Geometric phase has historically been defined using closed cycles of polarization states, often derived using differential geometry on the Poincare sphere. Using the recently-developed wave model of geometric phase, we show that it is better to define geometric phase more generally, allowing every polarized wave to have a well-defined value at any point in its path. Using several example systems, we show how this approach provides more insight into the wave's behavior. Moreover, by tracking the continuous evolution of geometric phase as a wave propagates through an optical system, we encounter a natural explanation of why the conventional Poincare sphere solid angle method uses geodesic paths rather than physical paths of the polarization state.

Abstract:Based on the concept of classical phase, we formulate a new explanation for the quantum phase from the quantum mechanical point of view. The quantum phase is the canonically conjugate variable of an angular momentum operator, which corresponds to the angular position φ in an actual physical space with a classical reference frame, but it takes a complex exponential form e iφ≡cosφ+i sinφ in the abstract Hilbert space of a quantum reference frame. This formulation is simply the famous Euler formula in a complex number field. In particular, when φ = π/2, the correlative quantum phase is a unitary pure imaginary number e iπ/2≡cos(π/2)+i sin(π/2) ≡ i. By using a photon state-vector function that is the general solution of photon Schrödinger equation and can completely describe a photon’s behavior, we discuss the relationship between the angular momentum of a photon and the phase of the photon; we also analyze the intrinsic relationship between the macroscopic light wave phase and the microscopic photon phase.

Abstract:Geometric phase is a unifying and central concept in physics, including optics. As a matter of fact, optics played a pivotal role from the inception of this new paradigm, as some of the first experimental demonstrations have been carried out in optics. A specific type of geometric phase was first introduced by Pancharatnam while investigating interference effects between different polarizations. This specific type of geometric phase, nowadays called the Pancharatnam–Berry phase, is related to the variation of light polarization, encompassing exotic properties when compared with the dynamic phase associated with the optical path. The most widespread manifestation of the Pancharatnam–Berry phase occurs in the presence of a twisted anisotropic material, yielding a point-wise phase modulation proportional to the local rotation angle of the material. Here the basic mechanism behind the Pancharatnam–Berry phase is discussed. The various applications of this relatively original concept in photonics are then reviewed, presenting both the most important results and manufactured devices reported in literature. The interplay between geometric phase and diffraction occurring in bulk structures is discussed in detail. In the latter case it is shown how geometric phase can be harnessed to generate a new kind of optical waveguide without the necessity of any index gradient.

Abstract:The transverse spatial structure of a paraxial beam of light is fully characterized by a set of parameters that vary only slowly under free propagation. They specify bosonic ladder operators that connect modes of different order, in analogy to the ladder operators connecting harmonic-oscillator wave functions. The parameter spaces underlying sets of higher-order modes are isomorphic to the parameter space of the ladder operators. We study the geometry of this space and the geometric phase that arises from it. This phase constitutes the ultimate generalization of the Gouy phase in paraxial wave optics. It reduces to the ordinary Gouy phase and the geometric phase of non-astigmatic optical modes with orbital angular momentum states in limiting cases. We briefly discuss the well-known analogy between geometric phases and the Aharonov-Bohm effect, which provides some complementary insights in the geometric nature and origin of the generalized Gouy phase shift. Our method also applies to the quantum-mechanical description of wave packets. It allows for obtaining complete sets of normalized solutions of the Schrödinger equation. Cyclic transformations of such wave packets give rise to a phase shift, which has a geometric interpretation in terms of the other degrees of freedom involved.

Abstract:The quantum vacuum contribution to Berry's geometric phase of photon fields inside a noncoplanarly curved (coiled) fiber is considered by means of the second-quantization formulation. It is shown that the quantum vacuum Berry's phases of left- and right-handed circularly polarized light have the equal magnitudes but opposite signs, and are therefore eliminated entirely by each other. In order to realize such a novel vacuum effect, a scheme to separate the quantum vacuum Berry's phase of one polarized light from another by using the chiral medium fiber is suggested. We think the present study might be the first treatment for the time evolution of vacuum zero-point energy.

Abstract:We study the geometric phase factors underlying the classical and the corresponding quantum dynamics of a driven nonlinear oscillator exhibiting chaotic dynamics. For the classical problem, we compute the geometric phase factors associated with the phase space trajectories using Frenet-Serret formulation. For the corresponding quantum problem, the geometric phase associated with the time evolution of the wave function is computed. Our studies suggest that the classical geometric phase may be related to the the difference in the quantum geometric phases between two neighboring eigenstates.

Abstract:Properties of the geometric phase for a nonstatic coherent light-wave arisen in a static environment are analyzed from various angles. The geometric phase varies in a regular nonlinear way, where the center of its variation increases constantly with time. This consequence is due to the effects of the periodic wave collapse and expansion on the evolution of the geometric phase. Harmonization of such a geometric-phase evolution with the dynamical phase makes the total phase evolve with a unique pattern that depends on the degree of nonstaticity. The total phase exhibits a peculiar behavior for the case of extreme nonstaticity, which is that it precipitates periodically in its evolution, owing to a strong response of the geometric phase to the wave nonstaticity. It is confirmed that the geometric phase in the coherent state is mostly more prominent compared to that in the Fock states. For a simple case where the wave nonstaticity disappears, our description of the geometric phase recovers to the well-known conventional one which no longer undergoes periodical change. While the familiar dynamical phase is just related to the expectation value of the Hamiltonian, the geometric phase that we have managed reflects a delicate nonstaticity difference in the evolution of quantum states.

Abstract:The concepts of geometric phase and wave-particle duality are interlinked to several fundamental phenomena in quantum physics, but their mutual relationship still forms an uncharted open problem. Here we address this question by studying the geometric phase of a photon in double-slit interference. We especially discover a general complementarity relation for the photon that connects the geometric phase it exhibits in the observation plane and the which-path information it encases at the two slits. The relation can be seen as quantifying wave-particle duality of the photon via the geometric phase, thus corroborating a foundational link between two ubiquitous notions in quantum physics research.

Abstract:Geometric phase is a powerful strategy for controlling light waves, which is solely applicable to spin light and not available for wave fields lacking intrinsic spin. By utilizing the cyclic evolution of OAM transformation, this study presents a general approach through topological complementary pair to achieve geometric phase and showcases its remarkable proficiency in controlling sound waves at subwavelength scales. Geometric phase enabled by spin‐orbit coupling has attracted enormous interest in optics over the past few decades. However, it is only applicable to circularly‐polarized light and encounters substantial challenges when applied to wave fields lacking the intrinsic spin degree of freedom. Here, a new paradigm is presented for achieving geometric phase by elucidating the concept of topological complementary pair (TCP), which arises from the combination of two compact phase elements possessing opposite intrinsic topological charge. Twisting the TCP leads to the generation of a linearly‐varying geometric phase of arbitrary order, which is quantified by the intrinsic topological charge. Notably distinct from the conventional spin‐orbit coupling‐based theories, the proposed geometric phase is the direct result of the cyclic evolution of orbital‐angular‐momentum transformation in mode space, thereby exhibiting universality across classical wave systems. As a proof of concept, the existence of this geometric phase is experimentally demonstrated using scalar acoustic waves, showcasing the remarkable ability in the precise manipulation of acoustic waves at subwavelength scales. These findings engender a fresh understanding of wave‐matter interaction in compact structures and establish a promising platform for exploring geometric phase, offering significant opportunities for diverse applications in wave systems.

Abstract:The state vector representing a quantum system acquires a phase factor following an adiabatic evolution along a closed trajectory in phase space. This is the traditional example of a geometric phase, or Pancharatnam–Berry phase, a concept that has now been generalized beyond cyclic adiabatic evolutions to include generalized quantum measurements, and that has been experimentally measured in a variety of physical systems. However, a clear description of the relationship between the emergence of a geometric phase and the effects of a series of generalized quantum measurements on a quantum system has not yet been provided. Here we report that a sequence of weak measurements with continuously variable measurement strengths in a quantum optics experiment conclusively reveals that the quantum measurement back-action is the source of the geometric phase—that is, the stronger a quantum measurement, the larger the accumulated geometric phase. We furthermore find that in the limit of strong (projective) measurement there is a direct connection between the geometric phase and the sequential weak value, ordinarily associated with a series of weak quantum measurements.

Abstract:While Pancharatnam discovered the geometric phase in 1956, his work was not widely recognized until its endorsement by Berry in 1987, after which it received wide appreciation. However, because Pancharatnam's paper is unusually difficult to follow, his work has often been misinterpreted as referring to an evolution of states of polarization, just as Berry's work focused on a cycle of states, even though this consideration does not appear in Pancharatnam's work. We walk the reader through Pancharatnam's original derivation and show how Pancharatnam's approach connects to recent work in geometric phase. It is our hope to make this widely cited classic paper more accessible and better understood.

Abstract:The concept of a geometric phase (Berry's phase) is generalized to the case of noneigenstates, which is applicable to both linear and nonlinear quantum systems. This is particularly important to nonlinear quantum systems, where, due to the lack of the superposition principle, the adiabatic evolution of a general state cannot be described in terms of eigenstates. For linear quantum systems, our new geometric phase reduces to a statistical average of Berry's phases. Our results are demonstrated with a nonlinear two-level model.

Abstract:An operator generalisation of the notion of geometric phase has been recently proposed purely based on physical grounds. Here we provide a mathematical foundation for its existence, while uncovering new geometrical structures in quantum systems. While probing the average of any observable it is found that a quantum system exhibits different ray spaces and associated fibre bundle structures. The generalised geometric phase is understood as (an)holonomy of a connection over these fibre bundles. The underlying ray spaces in general are found to be pseudo-Kahler manifolds, and its symplectic structure gets manifests as the generalised geometric phase.

Abstract:Conventional approaches for scattering manipulations largely rely on the technique of field expansions into spherical harmonics (electromagnetic multipoles), which nevertheless is not only nongeneric (expansion coefficients depend on the origin position of the coordinate system) but also more descriptive than predictive. Here, we explore this classical topic from a different perspective of controlled excitations and interferences of quasinormal modes (QNMs) supported by the scattering system. Scattered waves are expanded into coherent additions of QNMs, among which the relative amplitudes and phases are crucial factors to architect for scattering manipulations. Relying on the electromagnetic reciprocity, we provide full geometric representations based on the Poincaré sphere for those factors, and discover the hidden geometric phase of QNMs that drives the scattering evolutions. Further synchronous exploitations of the incident polarization-dependent geometric phase and excitation amplitudes enable efficient manipulations of both scattering intensities and polarizations. Continuous geometric phase spanning 2π is directly manifest through scattering variations, even in the rather elementary configuration of an individual particle scattering waves of varying polarizations. We have essentially established a profoundly all-encompassing framework for the calculations of geometric phase in arbitrary scattering systems that are reciprocal. Abstract:The geometric phase provides important mathematical insights to understand the fundamental nature and evolution of the dynamic response in a wide spectrum of systems ranging from quantum to classical mechanics. While the concept of geometric phase, which is an additional phase factor occurring in dynamical systems, holds the same meaning across different fields of application, its use and interpretation can acquire important nuances specific to the system of interest. In recent years, the development of quantum topological materials and its extension to classical mechanical systems have renewed the interest in the concept of geometric phase. This review revisits the concept of geometric phase and discusses, by means of either established or original results, its critical role in the design and dynamic behaviour of elastic waveguides. Concepts of differential geometry and topology are put forward to provide a theoretical understanding of the geometric phase and its connection to the physical properties of the system. Then, the concept of geometric phase is applied to different types of elastic waveguides to explain how either topologically trivial or non-trivial behaviour can emerge based on the geometric features of the waveguide. Abstract:We show how geometric phases may be used to fully describe quantum systems, with or without gravity, by providing knowledge about the geometry and topology of its Hilbert space. We find a direct relation between geometric phases and von Neumann algebras. In particular, we show that a vanishing geometric phase implies the existence of a well-defined trace functional on the algebra. We discuss how this is realised within the AdS/CFT correspondence for the eternal black hole. On the other hand, a non-vanishing geometric phase indicates missing information for a local observer, associated to reference frames covering only parts of the quantum system considered. We illustrate this with several examples, ranging from a single spin in a magnetic field to Virasoro Berry phases and the geometric phase associated to the eternal black hole in AdS spacetime. For the latter, a non-vanishing geometric phase is tied to the presence of a centre in the associated von Neumann algebra.

Geometric phases in generalized radical Floquet dynamics

Abstract:The Pancharatnam phase is a generalization of the Berry phase that applies to discrete sequences of quantum states. Here, we show that the Pancharatnam phase is a natural invariant for a wide class of quantum many-body dynamics involving measurements. We specifically investigate how a non-trivial Pancharatnam phase arises in the trajectories of Floquet quantum error-correcting codes and show that this phase can be extracted in a "computationally-assisted" interferometry protocol, involving additional post-processing based on the measurement record that defines a given quantum many-body trajectory. This Pancharatnam phase can also be directly related to the Berry phase accrued by continuous unitary evolution within a gapped phase. For the $\mathbb Z_2$ Floquet code of Hastings and Haah, we show that the associated family of unitary evolutions is the radical chiral Floquet phase. We demonstrate this correspondence explicitly by studying an exactly-solvable model of interacting spins.
