Abstract:The creation of carbonaceous nanoparticles and their dynamics in hydrocarbon flames are still debated in environmental, combustion, and material sciences. In this study, we introduce single-pulse femtosecond laser sheet-compressed ultrafast photography (fsLS-CUP), an ultrafast imaging technique specifically designed to shed light on and capture ultrafast dynamics stemming from interactions between femtosecond lasers and nanoparticles in flames in a single-shot. fsLS-CUP enables the first-time real-time billion frames-per-second (Gfps) simultaneous two-dimensional (2D) imaging of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) and laser-induced heating (LIH) that are originated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and soot particles, respectively. Furthermore, fsLS-CUP provides the real-time spatiotemporal map of femtosecond laser-soot interaction as elastic light scattering (ELS) at an astonishing 250 Gfps. In contrast to existing single-shot ultrafast imaging approaches, which are limited to millions of frames per second only and require multiple laser pulses, our method employs only a single pulse and captures the entire dynamics of laser-induced signals at hundreds of Gfps. Using a single pulse does not change the optical properties of nanoparticles for a following pulse, thus allowing reliable spatiotemporal mapping. Moreover, we found that particle inception and growth are derived from precursors. In essence, as an imaging modality, fsLS-CUP offers ultrafast 2D diagnostics, contributing to the fundamental understanding of nanoparticle's inception and broader applications across different fields, such as material science and biomedical engineering.

Abstract:High-speed, laser-based tomographic imaging of the three-dimensional time evolution of soot volume fraction in turbulent jet diffusion flames is demonstrated to be feasible at rates of 10 kHz or higher. The fundamental output of a burst-mode Nd:YAG laser with 1 J/pulse is utilized for volumetric impulsive heating of soot particles with a laser fluence of 0.1 J/cm2, enabling signal-to-noise ratios of ~100:1 in images of the resulting incandescence. The three-dimensional morphology of the soot distribution is captured with a spatial resolution of <1.5 mm using as few as four viewing angles, with convergence of the soot volume fraction to within ~95% occurring with seven or more viewing angles. Uniqueness of the solution is demonstrated using two sets of eight images captured at the same time instant, with agreement to >90% in peak values between the two sets. These data establish parameters for successful high-speed, three-dimensional imaging of the soot volume fraction within highly transient combustion environments.

Abstract:High-speed (20 kHz rate), volumetric laser-induced-fluorescence imaging of combustion intermediates such as a formaldehyde (CH2O) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) species is demonstrated for tracking the four-dimensional (4D) evolution of turbulent flames. The third-harmonic, 355 nm output of a burst-mode Nd:YAG laser with a 130 mJ/pulse is expanded to 30 mm diameter for volume illumination of the base region of a methane-hydrogen jet diffusion flame. Eight simultaneous images from different viewing angles are used to collect the resulting fluorescence signal for reconstruction of 200 time-sequential three-dimensional volumes over 10 ms duration. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 300:1 is achieved after reconstruction with a temporal resolution of 100 ns and spatial resolution of 0.85-1.5 mm.

Abstract:Knowledge of soot particle sizes is important for understanding soot formation and heat transfer in combustion environments. Soot primary particle sizes can be estimated by measuring the decay of time-resolved laser-induced incandescence (TiRe-LII) signals. Existing methods for making planar TiRe-LII measurements require either multiple cameras or time-gate sweeping with multiple laser pulses, making these techniques difficult to apply in turbulent or unsteady combustion environments. Here, we report a technique for planar soot particle sizing using a single high-sensitivity, ultra-high-speed 10 MHz camera with a 50 ns gate and no intensifier. With this method, we demonstrate measurements of background flame luminosity, prompt LII, and TiRe-LII decay signals for particle sizing in a single laser shot. The particle sizing technique is first validated in a laminar non-premixed ethylene flame. Then, the method is applied to measurements in a turbulent ethylene jet flame.

Abstract:Simultaneous images of laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) due to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and laser-induced incandescence (LH) visualization of soot concentrations are presented for laminar gas-jet diffusion flames. Spatially integrated measurements reveal similar spectral emission for LIF and LII, but vastly different time scales associated with radiative decay. Comparison of spatially resolved images using either 266-nm or 1064-nm excitation light reveals distinct regions of molecular fluorescence and soot incandescence. Consideration of photophysical properties of PAHs suggests that the fluorescence wavelength distribution is dependent on the size of the PAH. Using different detection spectral bands, spatially resolved regions attributed to different-sized PAHs are presented. The spatial distribution of PAH size is consistent with the putative growth mechanisms of PAHs. In the region between the LIF due to PAHs and LII due to soot, a dark zone is observed that is attributed to the presence of soot precursor particles. Current understanding of soot formation indicates that through both physical and/or chemical condensation, large PAHs react first to form soot precursor particles prior to the formation of soot particles. Transmission electron microscopy analysis of thermophoretically collected material from within this dark region confirmed the presence of soot precursor particles 2 to 5 nm in diameter.

Abstract:In order to understand the droplet micro-explosions occurring during single droplet combustion of the flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) precursor/solvent solutions, the optical techniques, such as, interferometric particle imaging (IPI) and standard rainbow refractometry (SRR), were applied to the single droplet combustion of Tin (II) 2-ethylhexanoate/Xylene. The changes of droplet size and rainbow pattern were detected using IPI and SRR, respectively. A multicomponent diffusion limited model was developed to simulate the experimental changes of droplet size and rainbow pattern, and to further estimate the mass and heat transfer inside the burning droplets. The rainbow patterns of the precursor/solvent droplets with micro-explosions show significantly different insights comparing to single component droplets. The results demonstrate that the evolutions of rainbow patterns of the burning droplets and the time needed for droplet micro-explosions are strongly dependent on the concentration of the metal-organic precursor. Abstract:This study explores flame structures and combustion dynamics in high-pressure n-dodecane fuel sprays, focusing on the formation and consumption of formaldehyde (CH 2 O) during autoignition and the development of poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) as soot precursors. These processes are crucial for optimizing combustion efficiency and reducing emissions. However, traditional approaches, which rely on single-shot measurements or ensemble-averaged visualizations, often overlook critical early-stage processes during low-temperature ignition. To overcome these challenges, we employed an innovative high-speed planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) technique at 50 kHz using a pulse-burst Nd:YAG laser system with an excitation wavelength of 355 nm. This approach, applied for the first time to Engine Combustion Network (ECN) Spray D flames, provides unprecedented insights into the combustion processes at varying ambient temperatures and oxygen concentrations. Additionally, simultaneous high-speed schlieren imaging at 100 kHz was used to visualize spray penetration, first-stage ignition, and thermal expansion zones. Our findings reveal that, similar to Spray A flames, CH 2 O forms in cold, fuel-rich zones well upstream of the combustion zone. However, in Spray D flames, the schlieren signal softening observed in the jet's head does not lead to complete disappearance, and the CH 2 O signal is absent from the full head of the spray. During the second-stage ignition, CH 2 O consumption accelerates due to high-temperature reactions, leading to a significant reduction in its signal. Unlike the mushroom-shaped structure seen in Spray A flames, Spray D flames exhibit a quasi-steady PAH phase structure, with lean peripheral mixtures insufficient for soot precursor formation. Notably, reducing ambient oxygen concentration to 13 % while maintaining or increasing temperature prolongs the presence of CH 2 O, highlighting its influence on ignition dynamics and oxidation processes in dodecane spray flames. This study provides new insights into the combustion mechanisms of high-pressure sprays and offers valuable data for developing next-generation combustion technologies, including models, aimed at improving efficiency and reducing emissions.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrate a single-shot two-dimensional measurement of vanadic oxide (V2O5) nanoparticles in a turbulent jet-diffusion flame based on phase-selective laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (PS-LIBS). By collecting the atomic spectra of vanadium near 439 nm from nano-sized plasmas within the similar to 30 ns lifetime, particle information can be revealed without interference from elastic scattering or Bremsstrahlung emissions. As the laser intensity increases, the signal intensity first increases and then saturates when the laser intensity reaches 0.5 GW/cm(2). In the saturation regime, a proportional correlation is established between the signal intensity and the particle volume fraction. Based on the parametric study in the laminar condition, we image the instantaneous distribution of particle volume fraction in the turbulent condition using single-shot PS-LIBS measurements. The snapshots show that vanadic oxide nanoparticles concentrate near the diffusion flame surface, which may be caused by the rapid formation of particles on the oxidizer/precursor side and quick dilution across the reaction layer. The Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) analysis further indicates that the fluctuations of the particle volume fraction originate from the unsteady flame surface at the upstream positions and large-scale mixing at the downstream positions. The single-shot PS-LIBS measurement shows promising potential for resolving complex processes of particle formation in turbulent flame synthesis. (C) 2018 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:A picosecond laser flash-heating technique is combined with ultrafast spectroscopic probe diagnostics to investigate the fundamental mechanisms of nanoenergetic material performance. The systems studied include Al nanoparticle aggregates in nitrocellulose (NC) oxidizer, size-selected Al nanoparticles in NC and in Teflon oxidizers, and nanoparticle thermites consisting of 30 nm Al and nanometric MoO 3 . The time-dependence of reactions between Al and the oxidizer on the picosecond to nanosecond time scales are studied using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) to monitor oxidizer consumption. The time-dependence of energy release is measured using fast optical spectroscopy. The space-dependence of chemical reaction propagation over 100 to 1500 nm distances is studied using the average distance between nanoparticles as a ruler. The distance of reaction propagation from a flash-heated Al nanoparticle increases linearly with energy, which is explained by a hydrodynamic model.

Abstract:In the 21st century, climate change is one of the main challenges for the sustainable development of human society and global economics. With worldwide increasing primary energy consumption, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is pursued by most countries to limit the global warming. Oxy-fuel combustion, among other carbon capture and storage technologies, is a promising technical solution for CO2 reduction with retrofitting of the existing fossil-fuel-fired power plants for future power supply. For industry-scale employment of oxy-fuel combustion technology, a thorough understanding of the flame characteristics of solid fuel particles is desired, requiring fundamental investigations in laboratory experiments. In this work, solid fuel combustion in laminar flows is comprehensively investigated in generic experiments by using advanced non-intrusive measurement techniques. The investigations emphasize ignition and the early-stage volatile combustion of fuel particles, which play an essential role in flame stabilization and propagation for industrial boilers. Oxy-fuel combustion is a complex multi-phase phenomenon with numerous interactive sub-processes involved, demanding in-situ data acquisition of multiple essential scalars and vectors. Thus, this thesis presents the efforts that are made (1) to develop methodology aiming for performing multi-parameter volumetric optical measurements in combustion research, and (2) to study the ignition and flame behavior of high-volatile bituminous coal particles by applying the developed laser diagnostics and further to deepen the fundamental understanding of solid fuel combustion. This thesis is structured in a cumulative dissertation framework, in which six peer-reviewed publications are accommodated in two major parts. Part one underlines the methodological development of high-speed volumetric laser measurements by introducing three major contributions. In a single-shot 3D measurement (paper I), the reaction zone of laminar and turbulent flames is visualized by using volumetric laser illumination. It extends to a quasi-4D flame laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) imaging measurement by combining a 100 kHz pulse-burst laser with a rapid acousto-optic deflector (paper II). By performing tomographic particle image velocimetry (Tomo-PIV) measurements, laser scanning and volumetric illumination methods are simultaneously utilized to analyze the flame-flow interactions of a turbulent flame (paper III). These experimental studies demonstrate the novelty and capability of multi-parameter, volumetric imaging techniques applicable to study solid fuel combustion. In part two, the above-mentioned optical diagnostics are applied in laminar flow reactor experiments with emphasis on a fundamental understanding of ignition and volatile combustion of solid fuel in oxy-fuel conditions. Following a step-wise increase in complexity, single-particle ignition and flame evolution are comprehensively investigated using 2D, multi-parameter diagnostics (paper IV), which simultaneously address geometric properties, e.g., particle size and shape, and reaction relevant quantities, e.g., OH species and flame luminescence. Extending to 3D (paper V), the topology of single-particle volatile flame and its temporal and spatial revolution are explored by the laser scanning OH-LIF. A fundamental understanding of single-particle volatile flame is obtained by evaluating the spherical volatile flame's stand-off distance. Finally, ignition and stabilization of a volatile flame seeded with particle groups are investigated (paper VI). Multi-parameter and multi-dimensional measurements contribute to interpreting particle-particle and particle-flame interactions and their importance in solid fuel combustion. Overall, significant progress is achieved in both methodology development and phenomena analysis. Acquired data provide a solid basement for validation of advanced numerical simulations.
Laser-Induced Emission Of Ultrafine Particulates Evolved By Pulverized Coal Pyrolysis

Abstract:The importance of on line measurement of ultrafine particulates in pulverized coal flames is mainly due to the detection of ultrafine particulate in the effluent for pollution control, and the quantification of fuel burnout in real time within a boiler for improved understanding of the flame heat transfer soot modeling as well. A method has been investigated using laser-heated emission within an O-2-free flame which provides a continuous in situ measurement of ultrafine particles during high-temperature pulverized coal pyrolysis. Bituminous coal particles are entrained by nitrogen along the centerline of a laminar flow flat flame burner, where a hydrogen-air flame under fuel-rich condition is used as a heat source. The temperatures of the hydrogen flame were measured by a finite-wire silica-coated Platinum-Rhodium type B Thermocouple. Volatiles released during the coal pyrolysis form a cloud of ultrafine particles at high temperature. A pulse laser sheet introduced to the flame heats the ultrafine particles to incandescent temperatures. The time-resolved laser-induced emission signals with different incident laser-pulse fluences were evaluated. The volume faction of ultrafine particles was associated with the peak value of the signals, and the mean particle size characterized by a time constant of the exponential signal decay. A strong dependence of the characteristic peak value and emission time constant during laser-heated particle cooling from the measured coal particle class could be determined. Specialties in signal evaluation due to residence time in the hydrogen flame for two sizes of coal particles are discussed.
Combined flow, temperature and soot investigation in oxy-fuel biomass combustion under varying oxygen concentrations using laser-optical diagnostics

Abstract:In pulverized oxy-fuel biomass combustion, intricate interaction of complex fluid-mechanical, particle-dynamical, and chemical processes manifests even at intermediate scales. This study performs a comprehensive analysis aimed to understand the processes of flame stabilization, pollutant formation, and combustion behavior of biomass particles, while evaluating the impact of varying oxygen concentration on combustion. The investigation is conducted with a comprehensive data set, encompassing various oxy-fuel operation conditions ranging from 27vol.% to 36vol.% in O2 concentration, along a comparable air flame. These conditions are realized in an optically accessible gas-assisted solid fuel combustor designed to generate flames up to 70kWth . Advanced laser-optical diagnostics are employed to capture the combustion process . These techniques include the use of two-phase PIV/PTV for simultaneous measurements of flow and particle velocities, the application of tomographic absorption spectroscopy to elucidate three-dimensional gas temperature distributions , and the establishment of a quasi-simultaneous LII and LIF experimental setup to capture both PAH and soot occurrences. Additionally, chemiluminescence imaging of CH∗ is incorporated. The analysis extends to both single-phase and two-phase combustion, revealing a pronounced influence of oxygen concentration on both regimes. The inner recirculation zone , characteristic of a swirl flame, decreases with increasing oxygen content, coupled with an acceleration of the main flow downwards due to heightened heat release proximate to the nozzle. In two-phase combustion, a significant combustion delay is observed compared to single-phase combustion. Furthermore, the occurrences of PAHs and soot are clearly separated, and a pronounced influence of local gas composition on soot formation is evident. Comparative examination between oxy-fuel and air combustion show that an oxy-fuel condition with an oxygen concentration just below 33vol.% closely mirrors the flame characteristics of air combustion.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) quantitative measurements of reacting multiphase micro-objects are of great interest in fuel particle combustion, which is composed of an inner fuel particle and an outer gas flame. Three models of digital inline holography of this composite fuel particle in the framework of light scattering and diffraction theories have been proposed, and then verified with reported experimental observations. Results show that the dispersed fuel particle and the gas flame distinguish in the reconstructed amplitude and phase contrast images, and reveal that the low extinction efficiency and phase shifting of the highly transparent, weakly scattering gas flame accounts for the difference. Abstract:The present work describes the development of a multiple laser-sheet imaging technique for the study of turbulent, premixed flame surface structures at high Karlovitz stretch factor values. Experiments were conducted using CH4 air mixtures at 365 K and 0.5 MPa and up to a root mean square turbulence velocity of 1.5 m/s. A high-speed Nd:YAG laser capable of pulsing up to 60 kHz in conjunction with a high-speed camera and a rotating mirror was used to reconstruct time-resolved three-dimensional turbulent flames. This has, for the first time, enabled the direct measurement of wrinkled flame surface areas, along with reaction progress variable and flame brush thickness. These are important parameters for the characterization of turbulent burning rates and provide more insight into the dynamic nature of the flames and their structures. In addition, the current data aid toward direct comparison with results from combustion simulation studies.

Laser-based analysis of soot and PAHs during coal pyrolysis within a gas-jet flame

Abstract:Volatiles released from the coal particles pyrolysis form a cloud of soot precursor particles at high temperature in fuel rich flame conditions. An experimental study is described to investigate pyrolysis characteristics of pulverized coal entrained by nitrogen along the centerline tube in a hydrogen jet flame. Spatially resolved regions attributed to OH and PAHs molecules were deduced from the planar laserinduced fluorescence (PLIF), and soot particles from planar laser-induced incandescence (PLII). It was observed that peak OH PLIF occurred just near the bottom of the burner, and the location of peak PAHs PLIF coincided with measured temperature of 800 to 1000 K, which may indicate some large aromatic species formed from coal pyrolysis. The quantitative information of soot particles from the coal pyrolysis along the jet flame height were obtained from temporal laser induced incandescence signals. The mean diameter of soot particles is in the range of 80 to 100 nm. The maximum of soot volume fraction appear with the occurrence of coal pyrolysis.
In-situ temperature and major species measurements of sooting flames based on short-gated spontaneous Raman scattering

Abstract:Spontaneous Raman spectroscopy (SRS) is a conventional in-situ laser diagnostic method that has been widely used for measurements of temperature and major species. However, SRS in sooting flames suffers from strong interference including laser-induced fluorescence, laser-induced incandescence, and flame luminosity, which is a long-lasting challenge. This work introduces a low-cost, easy-to-implement, and calibration-free SRS thermometry in sooting flames based on a 355-nm nanosecond laser beam. Several strategies were utilized to increase the signal-to-noise ratio and suppress the interference: (1) nanosecond ICCD gate width; (2) optimized ICCD gate delay; (3) specially designed focusing shape of the laser beam; (4) ultraviolet polarizer filter. The temperature was obtained by fitting the contour of Stokes-Raman spectra of N2 molecules, which does not require additional calibration. Based on the measured temperature, the mole fraction of major species can be obtained with calibration. This method was used in the temperature and major species measurements of an ethylene-based counterflow diffusion flame. The experimental results show an excellent agreement with the simulation results, demonstrating the feasibility of performing non-intrusive laser diagnostics of sooting and other particle-laden flames accurately.

Femtosecond Laser Filamentation for Sensing Combustion Intermediates: A Comparative Study

Abstract:We demonstrate experimental evidences that femtosecond filament-induced clean fingerprint fluorescence can indeed be employed to characterize the combustion intermediates in flames. By comparing the emission spectra obtained from an ethanol–air flame by femtosecond filament excitation, nanosecond laser-breakdown excitation, as well as without any laser excitation, it is found that the filament-induced fluorescence in the combustion flame mainly results from the interaction of femtosecond laser pulses with the combustion intermediates such as OH, CH, and C2 existing in the combustion, but not from the fragmentation of parent ethanol molecules.

Abstract:A planar laser-induced fluorescence (PLIF) of a single wavelength is introduced to image temperature and concentration distribution inside flames. Laser absorption spectroscopy (LAS) tomography was used to provide initial images of gas temperature for image iteration. The images of temperature and concentration are used to update the fluorescence image. The fluorescence images are also corrected to update images of temperature and radical concentrations iteratively. The intensity attenuation losses due to absorption in PLIF is corrected in the iterations. Single wavelength PLIF and LAS tomography are simultaneously performed, and fluorescence image at a single wavelength is required only for each quantitative measurement. The proposed method has a twice higher speed than the classical dual wavelength PLIF. In numerical simulations, the relative error of reconstructed images of temperature is within 7% and that of the concentration is less than 3% with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) higher than 30 dB. Experiments were conducted on a McKenna burner, quantitative images of temperature and OH concentration were obtained and compared with computational fluid dynamics (CFDs), thermocouple, and two-color PLIF. The absolute errors are less than 30 K in the center of the burner. The relative errors of concentration are less than 7% in the flat flames.

Abstract:Two-dimensional imaging of gas/particle phase transition of metal oxides in their native high-temperature flow conditions, using laser-driven localized nanoplasmas, was obtained by utilizing the gap between the excitation energies of the gas and particle phases such that only the Ti atoms in the particle phase were selectively excited without detectable Bremsstrahlung background. These in situ images of the particle phase Ti distribution allow the quantitative visualization of the transition of the gas precursors to the nanoparticle phase across the flame sheet as well as diffusion of the particle concentration in the post-flame zone.
