Abstract:Here, we report molecular chaperone GroELs that carry, at their apical domains, multiple DNA strands (ideally 28 DNA strands in total) with defined oligonucleotide (nt) sequences. This design strategy allows for the preparation of GroEL10a and GroEL10b carrying 10-nt DNA strands of 10a and 10b with complementary sequences, respectively, at their apical domains. One-dimensional coassembly of these GroELs is possible to form protein nanotube NT10a/10b with an anomalous thermodynamic stability due to the exceptionally large multivalency for the coassembly. Likewise, comparably stable nanotube NT15c/10d was obtained even when the apical-domain DNA strands (15c and 10d) were partially complementary to one another. Nevertheless, in sharp contrast with NT10a/10b, NT15c/10d, when incubated with DNA 15d, dissociates rapidly and completely because 15d preferentially hybridizes with the DNA strands of 15c in NT15c/10d by displacing those of 10d, to afford a mixture of GroEL15c/15d and GroEL10d. Even in the presence of NT10c/10d, 15d cleaved off NT15c/10d selectively, indicating the potential utility of NTs for targeted delivery.
Frictional Properties and Healing Behavior of Tectonic Mélanges: Implications for the Evolution of Subduction Fault Zones

Abstract:Abstract The frictional velocity dependence and healing behavior of subduction fault zones play key roles in the nucleation of stick‐slip instabilities at convergent margins. Diagenetic to low‐grade metamorphic processes such as pressure solution are proposed to be responsible for the change in frictional properties of fault materials along plate interfaces; pressure solution also likely contributes to the acceleration of healing according to previous studies. Here, we report friction studies for temperatures of 20–100°C and normal stresses from 20 to 125 MPa on samples collected from ancient subduction fault zones, the Lower Mugi and Makimine mélanges of the Cretaceous Shimanto belt. The two mélanges correspond to the updip and downdip limits of the seismogenic zone and include deformation features that indicate lower and higher degrees of pressure solution. Our data show that the Lower Mugi mélange exhibits velocity‐weakening to velocity‐neutral frictional behavior under low normal stress and that the Makimine mélange sample shows velocity‐strengthening behavior under high normal stress. We suggest that mineralogical changes due to diagenesis and metamorphism influence fault slip behavior. We measure frictional healing in slide‐hold‐slide experiments for the Lower Mugi mélange sample and document the role of pressure solution in fault healing. Our results show that frictional healing increases at higher temperatures. The microstructures related to pressure solution found in the post‐experimental gouges support the idea that the enhanced healing is related to pressure solution.

Abstract:Fluid flow and pore‐pressure cycling are believed to control slow slip events (SSEs), such as those that frequently occur at the northern Hikurangi margin of New Zealand. To better understand fluid flow in the forearc system we examined the relationship between several physical properties of Cretaceous‐to‐Pliocene sedimentary rocks from the Raukumara peninsula. We found that the permeability of the deep wedge is too low to drain fluids, but fracturing increases permeability by orders of magnitude, making fracturing key for fluid flow. In weeks to months, plastic deformation, swelling, and possibly not‐yet‐identified mechanisms heal the fractures, restoring the initial permeability. We conclude that overpressures at the northern HM might partly dissipate during SSEs due to enhanced permeability near faults. However, in the months following an SSE, healing in the prism will lower permeability, forcing pore pressure to rise and a new SSE to occur.

Effective Bulk Rheology of a Two‐Phase Subduction Shear Zone: Insights From Micromechanics‐Based Modeling and Implications for Subduction Interface Slow Slip Events

Abstract:Subduction interfaces exhibit various slip styles, including slow slip events (SSEs). We use a micromechanics‐based approach to calculate the effective rheology of a shear zone containing ellipsoidal amphibolite clasts deforming by dislocation creep within an interconnected linear‐viscous phyllosilicate‐dominated matrix. Frictional failure occurs if local stress exceeds Mohr‐Coulomb yield strength. At moderate fluid overpressure, mixed‐frictional‐viscous behavior emerges at ∼ 350–560° C, consistent with a broad zone of mixed fault slip behavior without requiring extreme fluid overpressures. Increasing stress in this transition zone promotes local frictional failure and raises bulk strain rate. If, however, the bulk strain rate increases by more than one order of magnitude, system‐wide frictional sliding becomes preferable. This strain rate increase is insufficient to explain the slip rates observed in geophysically detectable SSEs. Therefore, viscous matrix flow as modeled here cannot explain SSEs without either invoking dynamic weakening within a frictional‐viscous flow or a mechanism switch to dominantly frictional sliding.

Abstract:Slow slip events (SSEs) accommodate a significant proportion of tectonic plate motion at subduction zones, yet little is known about the faults that actually host them. The shallow depth (<2 km) of well-documented SSEs at the Hikurangi subduction zone offshore New Zealand offers a unique opportunity to link geophysical imaging of the subduction zone with direct access to incoming material that represents the megathrust fault rocks hosting slow slip. Two recent International Ocean Discovery Program Expeditions sampled this incoming material before it is entrained immediately down-dip along the shallow plate interface. Drilling results, tied to regional seismic reflection images, reveal heterogeneous lithologies with highly variable physical properties entering the SSE source region. These observations suggest that SSEs and associated slow earthquake phenomena are promoted by lithological, mechanical, and frictional heterogeneity within the fault zone, enhanced by geometric complexity associated with subduction of rough crust.
Microphysical Model Predictions of Fault Restrengthening Under Room-Humidity and Hydrothermal Conditions: From Logarithmic to Power-Law Healing

Abstract:The maximum fault strength and rate of interseismic fault strengthening ("healing") are of great interest to earthquake hazard assessment studies, as they directly relate to event magnitude and recurrence time. Previous laboratory studies have revealed two distinct frictional healing behaviors, referred to as Dieterich-type and non-Dieterich-type healing. These are characterized by, respectively, log-linear and power-law increase in the strength change with time. To date, there is no physical explanation for the frictional behavior of fault gouges that unifies these seemingly inconsistent observations. Using a microphysical friction model previously developed for granular fault gouges, we investigate fault strengthening analytically and numerically under boundary conditions corresponding to laboratory slide-hold-slide tests. We find that both types of healing can be explained by considering the difference in grain contact creep rheology at short and long time scales. Under hydrothermal conditions favorable for pressure solution creep, healing exhibits a power-law evolution with hold time, with an exponent of ~1/3, and an "apparent" cutoff time (α) of hundreds of seconds. Under room-humidity conditions, where grain contact deformation exhibits only a weak strain-rate dependence, the predicted healing also exhibits a power-law dependence on hold time, but it can be approximated by a log-linear relation with α of a few seconds. We derive analytical expressions for frictional healing parameters (i.e., healing rate, cutoff time, and maximum healing), of which the predictions are consistent with numerical implementation of the model. Finally, we apply the microphysical model to small fault patches on a natural carbonate fault and interpret the restrengthening during seismic cycles.
The physics of fault friction: Insights from experiments on simulated gouges at low shearing velocities

Abstract:Abstract. The strength properties of fault rocks at shearing rates spanning the transition from crystal-plastic flow to frictional slip play a central role in determining the distribution of crustal stress, strain and seismicity in tectonically-active regions. We review experimental and microphysical modelling work aimed at elucidating the processes that control the transition from pervasive ductile flow of fault rock to rate-and-state dependent frictional (RSF) slip and to runaway rupture, carried out at Utrecht University in the past two or so decades. We address shear experiments on simulated gouges composed of calcite, halite-phyllosilicate mixtures, and phyllosilicate-quartz mixtures, performed under laboratory conditions spanning the brittle-ductile transition. With increasing shear rate (or decreasing temperature), the results consistently show transitions from (1) stable, velocity(v)-strengthening to potentially unstable, v-weakening behavior, and (2) back to v-strengthening. Sample microstructures show that the first transition, seen at low shear rates and/or high temperatures, represents a switch from pervasive, fully ductile deformation to frictional sliding, involving dilatant granular flow in localized shear bands, where intergranular slip is incompletely accommodated by creep of individual mineral grains. A recent microphysical model, treating fault rock deformation as controlled by a competition between rate-sensitive (diffusional or crystal-plastic) deformation of individual grains and rate-insensitive sliding interactions between grains (granular flow), predicts both transitions well. Unlike classical RSF approaches, this model quantitatively reproduces a wide range of (transient) frictional behaviors using input parameters with direct physical meaning. When implemented in numerical codes for crustal fault-slip, it offers a single, unified framework for understanding slip patch nucleation and growth to critical (seismogenic) dimensions, and for simulating the entire seismic cycle.
Fault‐Valve Instability: A Mechanism for Slow Slip Events

Abstract:Abstract Geophysical and geological studies provide evidence for cyclic changes in fault‐zone pore fluid pressure that synchronize with or at least modulate slip events. A hypothesized explanation is fault valving arising from temporal changes in fault zone permeability. In our study, we investigate how the coupled dynamics of rate and state friction, along‐fault fluid flow, and permeability evolution can produce slow slip events. Permeability decreases with time, and increases with slip. Linear stability analysis shows that steady slip with constant fluid flow along the fault zone is unstable to perturbations, even for velocity‐strengthening friction with no state evolution, if the background flow is sufficiently high. We refer to this instability as the “fault valve instability.” The propagation speed of the fluid pressure and slip pulse, which scales with permeability enhancement, can be much higher than expected from linear pressure diffusion. Two‐dimensional simulations with spatially uniform properties show that the fault valve instability develops into slow slip events, in the form of aseismic slip pulses that propagate in the direction of fluid flow. We also perform earthquake sequence simulations on a megathrust fault, taking into account depth‐dependent frictional and hydrological properties. The simulations produce quasi‐periodic slow slip events from the fault valve instability below the seismogenic zone, in both velocity‐weakening and velocity‐strengthening regions, for a wide range of effective normal stresses. A separation of slow slip events from the seismogenic zone, which is observed in some subduction zones, is reproduced when assuming a fluid sink around the mantle wedge corner.

Abstract:A paradox exists between the great number of intermediate-depth earthquakes occurring along active subduction interfaces worldwide and the extreme scarcity of paleo-seismic events recorded in exhumed metasediments from ancient subducted slabs. Recrystallization associated with exhumation-related overprinting generally contributes to the nearly-complete erasing of markers of unstable slip events in metamorphic rocks. We herein focus on a sample from an ancient deep thrust from a Cretaceous High-Pressure paleo-accretionary complex in Chilean Patagonia. A representative, moderately foliated micaschist exhibits broken garnet crystals that host a dense network of healed micro-fractures. While garnet fragments appear thoroughly disaggregated along the main foliation, the rock matrix that completely recrystallized has lost the record of brittle deformation. We employ a 2D visco-elasto-plastic numerical modelling approach in order to investigate the mechanical conditions that enable the fracturing of isolated garnet grains in a relatively weak matrix. The rupture of these stiff grains is achieved in our models at strain rates faster than 10 −10 /s to 10 −12 /s for elevated pore fluid pressures (80 to 99 % of the lithostatic value, respectively). Since high pore fluid pressures prevail in deep subduction interface settings, it is suggested that the rupture of these garnet crystals occurred through cataclastic deformation via (transient) slip rate acceleration, perhaps as a consequence of localized slip associated with slow to conventional earthquakes. Upon slip rate deceleration, viscous disaggregation of the broken garnet clasts occurred along with the erasing of the matrix cataclastic fabric.

Abstract:Whether Earth materials exhibit frictional creep or catastrophic failure is a crucial but unresolved problem in predicting landslide and earthquake hazards. Here, we show that field-scale observations of sliding velocity and pore water pressure at two creeping landslides are explained by velocity-strengthening friction, in close agreement with laboratory measurements on similar materials. This suggests that the rate-strengthening friction commonly measured in clay-rich materials may govern episodic slow slip in landslides, in addition to tectonic faults. Further, our results show more generally that transient slow slip can arise in velocity-strengthening materials from modulation of effective normal stress through pore pressure fluctuations. This challenges the idea that episodic slow slip requires a narrow range of transitional frictional properties near the stability threshold, or pore pressure feedbacks operating on initially unstable frictional slip.

Abstract:"Flip‐flop" detachment mode represents an endmember type of lithosphere‐scale faulting observed at almost amagmatic sections of ultraslow‐spreading mid‐ocean ridges. Recent numerical experiments using an imposed steady temperature structure show that an axial temperature maximum is essential to trigger flip‐flop faults by focusing flexural strain in the footwall of the active fault. However, ridge segments without significant melt budget are more likely to be in a transient thermal state controlled, at least partly, by the faulting dynamics themselves. Therefore, we investigate which processes control the thermal structure of the lithosphere and how feedbacks with the deformation mechanisms can explain observed faulting patterns. We present results of 2‐D thermo‐mechanical numerical modeling including serpentinization reactions and dynamic grain size evolution. The model features a novel form of parametrized hydrothermal cooling along fault zones as well as the thermal and rheological effects of periodic sill intrusions. We find that the interplay of hydrothermal fault zone cooling and periodic sill intrusions in the footwall facilitates the flip‐flop detachment mode. Hydrothermal cooling of the fault zone pushes the temperature maximum into the footwall, while intrusions near the temperature maximum further weaken the rock and promote the formation of new faults with opposite polarity. Our model allows us to put constraints on the magnitude of two processes, and we obtain most reasonable melt budgets and hydrothermal heat fluxes if both are considered. Furthermore, we frequently observe two other faulting modes in our experiments complementing flip‐flop faulting to yield a potentially more robust alternative interpretation for existing observations.

Fractal Spatial Distributions of Initial Shear Stress and Frictional Properties on Faults and Their Impact on Dynamic Earthquake Rupture

Abstract:ABSTRACT We investigate the influence of the heterogeneous slip-weakening distance (DC) in dynamic rupture simulations, in which DC is proportional to the fault irregularities. Specifically, we compare a heterogeneous fractal DC distribution to a uniform DC over the entire fault when the initial shear stress is also heterogeneous. We find that even small changes in the average value of DC (<1 mm) can lead to significant differences in the rupture evolution; that is, the average DC and the way DC is distributed determines if the rupture is a runaway, self-arrested, or nonpropagating. We find that the self-arrested ruptures differ from runaway ruptures in the amount of area characterized by large slips (asperities). Self-arrested ruptures match the Somerville et al. (1999) asperity criteria in which ∼25% of ruptured area radiate ∼45% of the total seismic moment. This criterion is not satisfied for runaway ruptures. For runaway ruptures, ∼50% of the ruptured area radiates about 70% of the seismic moment, indicating that the ruptured area is not linearly proportional to the seismic moment. Self-arrested ruptures are characterized by dynamic shear stress drops (SDs) in the range ∼2.9–5.5 MPa, whereas for runaway ruptures the dynamic SDs increase to values between ∼12 and 20 MPa. Self-arrested ruptures generated by fractal distributed DC resemble the rupture properties of observed earthquakes. In addition, results show that the conditions for self-arrested ruptures are connected to the decrease of residual energy at rupture boundaries.

The Role of Thermal Pressurization and Dilatancy in Controlling the Rate of Fault Slip

Abstract:Geophysical observations have shown that transient slow slip events, with average slip speeds v on the order of 10−8 to 10−7 m/s, occur in some subduction zones. These slip events occur on the same faults but at greater depth than large earthquakes (with slip speeds of order ∼ 1 m/s). We explore the hypothesis that whether slip is slow or fast depends on the competition between dilatancy, which decreases fault zone pore pressure p, and thermal pressurization, which increases p. Shear resistance to slip is assumed to follow an effective stress law τ=f(σ-p)≡ fσ ̄. We present two-dimensional quasi-dynamic simulations that include rate-state friction, dilatancy, and heat and pore fluid flow normal to the fault. We find that at lower background effective normal stress (σ ̄), slow slip events occur spontaneously, whereas at higher σ ̄, slip is inertially limited. At intermediate σ ̄, dynamic events are followed by quiescent periods, and then long durations of repeating slow slip events. In these cases, accelerating slow events ultimately nucleate dynamic rupture. Zero-width shear zone approximations are adequate for slow slip events but substantially overestimate the pore pressure and temperature changes during fast slip when dilatancy is included.
Experimental evidence of seismic ruptures initiated by aseismic slip

Abstract:Seismic faults release the stress accumulated during tectonic movement through rapid ruptures or slow slip events. The slow slip events play a crucial role in the seismic cycle as they impact the occurrence of earthquakes. However, the mechanisms by which a slow-slip region affects the dynamics of frictionally locked regions remain elusive. Here, building on model laboratory experiments, we establish that a slow-slip region acts as a nucleation center for seismic rupture, thereby enhancing earthquakes' frequency. We emulate slow-slip regions by introducing a granular material patch along part of a laboratory fault. By measuring the response of the fault to shear, we show that the role of the heterogeneity is to serve as a seed crack for rapid ruptures, reducing fault shear resistance. Additionally, by varying the external normal load, we show that the slow-slip region extends beyond the heterogeneity, demonstrating that fault composition is not the only requirement for slow-slip, but that load also plays a role. Our findings demonstrate that fracture concepts single out the very origin of earthquake nucleation and slip dynamics in seismic faults. The interplay between slowly-slipping and locked regions that we identify provides a promising avenue to monitor fault propagation and mitigate seismic hazards.

Intermittent lab earthquakes in dynamically weakening fault gouge

Abstract:Large and destructive earthquakes on mature faults in Earth's crust occur as slip in a layer of a fine granular material-fault gouge-produced by comminution during sliding1,2. A range of insights into the frictional resistance of faults-one of the main factors controlling earthquake nucleation, dynamic propagation and arrest, and hence the destructive ground shaking of earthquakes2,3-has been obtained in experiments with spatially uniform slip imposed in small samples2,4-21. However, how various features of gouge friction combine to determine spontaneous progression of earthquakes is difficult to study in the lab owing to substantial challenges with sample sizes and adequate imaging22. Here, using lab experiments, we show that spontaneously propagating dynamic ruptures navigate a fault region with fine rock gouge through complex, intermittent slip processes with dramatic friction evolution. These include repeated arrest of rupture propagation caused by friction strengthening at lower slip rates and dynamic earthquake re-nucleation enabled by pronounced rapid friction weakening at higher slip rates consistent with flash heating8,12,23. The spontaneous repeated weakening and strengthening of friction in fine rock gouge highlights the fundamental dependence of friction on slip rate and associated processes, such as shear heating, localization and delocalization of shear, and dilation and compaction of the shear layer6,7,9-21. Our findings expand experimental support9,11 of the concept that co-seismic weakening may enable earthquake rupture to break through stable fault regions24,25, with substantial implications for seismic hazard.
Seismic Versus Aseismic Slip: Probing Mechanical Properties of the Northeast Japan Subduction Zone

Abstract:Fault slip may involve slow aseismic creep and fast seismic rupture, radiating seismic waves manifested as earthquakes. These two complementary behaviors accommodate the long-term plate convergence of major subduction zones and are attributed to fault frictional properties. It is conventionally assumed that zones capable of seismic rupture on the subduction megathrust are confined to between about 10 to 50 km depth; however, the actual spatiotemporal distribution of fault mechanical parameters remains elusive for most subduction zones. The 2011 Tohoku Mw 9.0 earthquake ruptured with >50 m slip up to the trench, thus challenging this conventional assumption, and provides a unique opportunity to probe the mechanical properties of the Japan subduction zone. Drawing on the inferred distribution of coseismic and postseismic slip, it has recently been suggested that portions of the megathrust are capable of switching between seismic and aseismic behavior. Kinematic models of the coseismic rupture and 15-month postseismic afterslip of this event suggest that the coseismic rupture triggered widespread frictional afterslip with equivalent moment magnitude of 8.17–8.53, in addition to viscoelastic relaxation in the underlying mantle. The identified linear relation between modeled afterslip, slip inferred from repeating earthquakes on the plate interface, and the cumulative number of aftershocks within 15 km distance of the subduction thrust suggests that most aftershocks are a direct result of afterslip. We constrain heterogeneous rate-state friction parameters of the subduction thrust from the computed coseismic stress changes and afterslip response. Our results indicate a variable pattern along dip and strike, characterizing areas down-dip and south of the main rupture zone as having velocity-strengthening properties. In agreement with seismic tomographic models of plate boundary elastic properties and geologic evidence for previous M>8.5 megathrust earthquakes on this section of the plate boundary, we suggest that the obtained pattern of the frictional properties is characteristic of subducted material and thus persistent in time and space.

Abstract:Abstract The potential of faults to show earthquake‐generating slip instabilities depends not only on the intrinsic frictional properties of the fault zone, but also on the elasticity of the surrounding material. A velocity‐weakening fault is expected to show increasingly unstable frictional behavior with decreasing local elastic stiffness around the fault zone. Fault zone roughness can cause slip in the shear direction to be accompanied by fault‐normal movement, modulated by fault‐normal elastic properties, however these effects are poorly understood. Here, we systematically vary the stiffness surrounding the fault in both the shear‐parallel and fault‐normal directions, to investigate the origin of slip instabilities and changes in friction constitutive properties. We confirm the transition from stable sliding through slow slip to stick‐slip due to reduced fault‐parallel stiffness, and that the occurrence of different types of slip events can be explained by the ratio between shear and critical stiffness. In contrast, reducing the fault‐normal stiffness produces stick‐slip instabilities under conditions where the conventional critical stiffness criterion predicts stable sliding, and does not produce transitional slow slip events. Our data suggest that: (a) the stability criterion for frictional slip should be modified to incorporate fault‐normal stiffness, and (b) the unexpected slip instabilities may represent wrinkle‐like slip pulses, possibly due to a stiffness asymmetry introduced by lowering the fault normal stiffness on one side of the fault. This implies that earthquakes may occur when the fault‐normal stiffness, or bulk modulus for natural faults, is decreased and/or asymmetric across the fault zone, both of which may be common in nature.

Abstract:The failure of frictional interfaces and the spatiotemporal structures that accompany it are central to a wide range of geophysical, physical and engineering systems. Recent geophysical and laboratory observations indicated that interfacial failure can be mediated by slow slip rupture phenomena which are distinct from ordinary, earthquake-like, fast rupture. These discoveries have influenced the way we think about frictional motion, yet the nature and properties of slow rupture are not completely understood. We show that slow rupture is an intrinsic and robust property of simple non-monotonic rate-and-state friction laws. It is associated with a new velocity scale $c_{min}$, determined by the friction law, below which steady state rupture cannot propagate. We further show that rupture can occur in a continuum of states, spanning a wide range of velocities from $c_{min}$ to elastic wave-speeds, and predict different properties for slow rupture and ordinary fast rupture. Our results are qualitatively consistent with recent high-resolution laboratory experiments and may provide a theoretical framework for understanding slow rupture phenomena along frictional interfaces.

Abstract:Abstract We report macroscopic stick‐slip events in saw‐cut Westerly granite samples deformed under controlled upper crustal stress conditions in the laboratory. Experiments were conducted under triaxial loading ( σ 1 > σ 2 = σ 3 ) at confining pressures ( σ 3 ) ranging from 10 to 100 MPa. A high‐frequency acoustic monitoring array recorded particle acceleration during macroscopic stick‐slip events allowing us to estimate rupture speed. In addition, we record the stress drop dynamically and we show that the dynamic stress drop measured locally close to the fault plane is almost total in the breakdown zone (for normal stress >75 MPa), while the friction f recovers to values of f > 0.4 within only a few hundred microseconds. Enhanced dynamic weakening is observed to be linked to the melting of asperities which can be well explained by flash heating theory in agreement with our postmortem microstructural analysis. Relationships between initial state of stress, rupture velocities, stress drop, and energy budget suggest that at high normal stress (leading to supershear rupture velocities), the rupture processes are more dissipative. Our observations question the current dichotomy between the fracture energy and the frictional energy in terms of rupture processes. A power law scaling of the fracture energy with final slip is observed over 8 orders of magnitude in slip, from a few microns to tens of meters. Fluid-driven slow slip and earthquake nucleation on a slip-weakening circular fault

Abstract:We investigate the propagation of fluid-driven fault slip on a slip-weakening frictional interface separating two identical half-spaces of a three-dimensional elastic solid. Our focus is on axisymmetric circular shear ruptures as they capture the most essential aspects of the dynamics of unbounded ruptures in three dimensions. In our model, fluid-driven aseismic slip occurs in two modes: as an interfacial rupture that is unconditionally stable, or as the quasi-static nucleation phase of an otherwise dynamic rupture. Unconditionally stable ruptures progress through four stages. Initially, ruptures are diffusively self-similar and the interface behaves as if it were governed by a constant friction coefficient equal to the static friction value. Slip then accelerates due to frictional weakening while the cohesive zone develops. Once the latter gets properly localized, a finite amount of fracture energy emerges along the interface and the rupture dynamics is governed by an energy balance of the Griffith's type. In this stage, fault slip transition from a large-toughness to a small-toughness regime. Ultimately, self-similarity is recovered and the fault behaves again as having a constant friction coefficient, but this time equal to the dynamic friction value. When slow slip is the result of a frustrated dynamic instability, slip also initiates self-similarly at a constant peak friction coefficient. The maximum aseismic rupture size varies from a critical nucleation radius (shear modulus divided by slip-weakening rate) to infinity near the limit that separates the two modes of aseismic sliding. We provide analytical and numerical solutions for the problem solved over its full dimensionless parameter space. Due to its three-dimensional nature, the model enables quantitative comparisons with field observations as well as preliminary engineering design of hydraulic stimulation operations.
