Abstract:This study examines the economic aspects of death and funeral celebration in the Akan town of Ayirebi, near Akyem Oda, in southeastem Ghana. It illustrates the extent of social responsibility that exists in a contemporary stratified society that has a mixed form of property holding. It shows how a traditional institution functions as an effective response to socioeconomic stress, alleviating the hardships of the poorer segments of the population while allowing local capitalists to assert status and prestige. The examination of the processes involved in the preparation of the corpse, burial and observance of the final funeral rites, as well as what happens to productive resources after the owner’s death, shows an elaborate division of labour, and economic costs and benefits within the bereaved family, the lineage and the wider community.

Abstract:Cultural traditions at the end of life solidify societal members. As the world becomes more globalized, socio-economic factors affect how traditional practices are expressed, and the role and toll they make on modern societies. This article examines the contemporary Akan funeral practices in Ghana. Akan lineage members, from birth through puberty, marriage, maturity, old age, go through various rites of passage that bond them culturally and spiritually to others in society. One such ritual is funeral celebration. Funeral celebration, an old practice, has always been at the heart of public social events of Akan people. However, the changes in Ghanaian Akan funerals over the past 4 decades, and their impact on the people, make this an important topic. The article describes the Akan belief of life after death, the respect accorded to the dead, the prestige associated with successful funeral celebrations, and socio-economic factors that continue to shape Akan funeral practices. Socio-economic impact and the resulting challenges are discussed.

Abstract:Doctrinal reasoning, the practice of chanting nam-myōho-renge-kyō and its vision for kōsen-rufu has been how Sōka Gakkai (SG) promulgated Nichiren Buddhism. This paper explores, in an in-depth anthropological manner, how doctrinal issues matter significantly in the meaning of funeral practices in contemporary SG. So-called Friend Funerals have become widely common and demonstrate how SG members’ understanding of death and mortuary rites differ in some significant ways from common practices in Japan. To understand why specific funeral rituals are not in and of themselves considered of primary importance when a person dies in SG, this paper discusses its reading of key tenants of Nichiren Buddhism. What hotoke or buddha means is commonly seen in Japan as something achieved upon death facilitated by specific funeral rites. How such views fundamentally differ in SG is explored here based on long-term fieldwork and participant observation, as well as interviews and review of its doctrine. The research suggests that SG members engage in a cross-generational endeavour for kōsen-rufu where personal actions—what could be described as the ‘political’ existence of this life—matters but in a non-dualistic way as this simultaneously becomes the sphere that ‘transcends’ that contemporary existence. How one views death is not only seen as something relevant at the end of life, nor only to those remaining, but is taken as a reality that becomes the impetus for giving deeper meaning to how one acts in daily life as part of a cross-generational movement.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to investigate two customary funerals conducted by the Dane-zaa First Nation of Northeastern British Columbia, known as the Doig River First Nation. Both funerals included a lot of drumming, singing, and dancing around the fire in keeping with the Dane-zaa custom. Still, there was one key distinction between the two rituals. The funeral held in 2019 for Janice Askoty was a hybrid service that included a Christian liturgy and customary rituals. Such a ritual highlighted the conflicts that already existed among community members over faith and belief systems. There were no conflicts throughout the Christian service that was part of Annie Oker's 2020 funeral. In this paper, the researcher use the notion of syncretism and my observations to illustrate how Christian practices have been merged with indigenous cultural practices, symbols, and beliefs to create new blended practices. Simultaneously, the researcher highlight how certain customs (such as drumming, singing, and dancing around the fire) have endured to this day because they have not been altered by outside forces. Finally, the researcher discuss how the history of colonialism continues to show itself in funerary celebrations and how the community members view, confront, and resist it.
Gendered mourning: A perspective of Akan death culture in Ghana

Abstract:Death is the commonest, incomprehensible, and inescapable reality confronting humanity in all nations and cultures. However, cultures vary in their conceptions of death, grieving and mourning rituals. Among the Akan of Ghana, mourning and funeral obsequies are essential cultural and spiritual practices. In this article, we draw insights from our reflective lived experiences and critical literature review to explore mourning and death rituals among the Akan as a stratified cultural system that reflects and reproduces broader gender patterns of masculinity and femininity in Ghana. We discuss the concept and cultural significance of mourning and bereavement practices, and further examine how socio-cultural notions of gender shape mourning and death rituals in Ghana. We argue that, as in many social and economic spaces in Ghana, funeral obsequies and bereavement practices represent sites for enacting and reproducing masculinity and femininity. The deleterious health and psychological consequences for men and women are further discussed.

Abstract:The collaborative team of the authors of the Adyghe State University created a folklore subcorpus of the Adyghe linguistic corpus, comprising more than 3000 words and word combinations drawn from archival sources and expeditionary materials recorded in the Republic of Adyghea and among the Circassians of Turkey. The Adyghe ritual incantations used in various ritual situations, weddings, and clan and family festivals, have been compiled into a separate collection. Here we consider two poetic forms of musically intoned and non- toned genres of the ritual folklore of the Adyghes: dzhegoklo tepch”ekher “ritual incantations of dzheguako” and dzheguako kladzhekher “extemporaneous invocation of dzheguako.” The formulas of ritual incantations are found to feature at least five thematic clichés. The invocations are systematized according to several criteria: by the addressee, semantic content, and structure (verbal and musical) by the concordance with the folk tune. The paper describes the subethnic differences in using invocations and their names. The semantic and construction formulas are identified, allowing non-intonated and musical-poetic exclamations to be transmitted to a new generation. The materials of the folklore sub-corpus of the linguistic corpus of the Adyghe language allowed new terms and concepts to be introduced into folklore studies: tepch”ekher “ritual incantation, ritual appeal to participants of the ceremony”; kladzhekher “improvisational invocations and appeals”; kledzheguakh’ “final coda of wedding ceremony”; k1ekuuakh’ (Bzhedughe, literally: “accompany with shouts”) “short rhythmic verbal cues, humorous remarks.” High ideals of traditional culture, especially the etiquette norms of interaction in the society, manifest themselves through dzhegoklo tepch”ekher and kladzhekher.

Abstract:Death is an inevitable aspect of human existence. Human beings have evolved the custom of honouring the deceased with organized burial arrangements. Each society, therefore, has a different tradition for funeral arrangements and burial ceremonies. Among the Yoruba people, the deceased is honored with elaborate funeral arrangements incurring huge expenses. Traditionally, these expenses are borne by the deceased’s lineage. The Ikorodu (Remo) sub-ethnic Yoruba group has a traditional form of funeral insurance that makes funeral arrangements and expenses a communal responsibility. This study microscopically examines aspects of burial arrangements among the people. It specifically concentrates on the traditional funeral insurance practice, locally known as iwolefu, among the people. The study argues that the traditional funeral insurance practice is among the main instruments by which the institutions of ẹbí (family) and ìdílé (lineage) are preserved among the aborigines of the Ikorodu area. The study uses historical and ethnographical approaches to data collation and interpretation.

Abstract:Introduction. The article considers the variety and functions of dishes and utensils used at the sacrificial rituals of Trans-Kama “pagans” Udmurts from the Republic of Bashkortostan and Perm Krai. This is the first attempt of using extensive field and archival materials for the research purposes. Materials and Methods. The material for the study represents the published and archival sources, ethnographic information collected the authors during many years of field research. The analysis of materials was carried out using a comparative-historical method. The article takes into account the theoretical approaches of the semiotic school in ethnology. Results and Discussion. In the object world of Udmurt sacrifices, a special place is occupied by dishes and utensils. Without them the ritual process involving the preparation of food and a joint meal is impossible. Various dishes (cauldrons, troughs, buckets, bowls, spoons, ladles, etc.) are used for their utilitarian purpose (cooking, storage, transportation, eating food, etc.) but inclusion in the ritual process endows them with symbolic functions. Conclusion. Dishes and utensils used at the sacrifices of the Trans-Kama Udmurts are still endowed with a high sacred status. The number, composition and methods of using ritual utensils have remained traditional but their forms, material and manufacturing method have changed. As before, in addition to being used for utilitarian purposes they are endowed with many symbolic functions.

Abstract:The article is devoted to one of the spheres of the spiritual culture of the inhabitants of Badakhshan – funeral and mourning rites, which reflected many of the traditional ideas of the local population. The purpose of the article is to reveal the distinctive cultural features in the funeral and mourning rites of the inhabitants of Badakhshan. The content of the article is based on the material accumulated by the author from folk stories, beliefs and customs of funerals and mourning ceremonies, the results of surveys of local residents, experts on local rituals and active participants in the relevant rites, as well as the views of previous researchers. On the basis of the method of participant observation, interviews, comparative methods, various aspects of the features of funeral and memorial rites were analyzed, such as reading a prayer for the dead (janoz), funeral lighting of the lamp “Charogravshan” (Lighting the lamp), which form the basis of the religious rites of the mourning Shiite families. Ismailis of Badakhshan. At the end of the article, conclusions are given about the main elements of the rite “Charogravshan”: reading the verses of the Koran associated with light; reading “Kandilname (Charogname)”; prayers for lighting a lamp; reading laudatory verses from the poetry of Nasir Khosrov; praise in the name of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him); prayers and special verses related to grief; checking the lamp by the caliph and those present; prayers and blessings for the repose of the soul of the deceased.
A Sociolinguistic Analysis of Gender Differentiation in Yoruba Burial Rites

Abstract:This paper focuses on socio-hermeneutic study of gender differentiation in Yoruba burial rites. There are many types of oral genres in Yoruba society. These genres have different functions for different occasion. In essence, Ìrèmọ̀jé eré ìṣípà ọdẹ (hunters funeral dirge) and ìsàà ró (women funeral dirge) are used during men and women funeral rites respectively in Yoruba land. Ogun deity is the founder of Ìrèmọ̀jé chant. Ogun was the first hunter with many adherents who were hunters too. Before the death of Ogun, he ordered his adherents to chant Ìrèmọ̀jé during his funeral rites. He also instructed them to do the same during the funeral rites of fellow great hunters, that is, the hunters that were succeeded by viable children. Ìrèmọ̀jé ìsipaọdẹ is specifically for men and not for women. Ìsàà ró is the final burial rite for the aged women in Yoruba land. This burial rite marks the exit of the aged women from this world to the world beyond. In essence, ìsàà ró is a traditional send-forth for the dead. This type of burial rite was popular in Yoruba land in those days but it was more popular among the Oyo-Yoruba than other Yoruba ethnic groups. Ìsàà ró burial rite is often performed by the Alágbaà (chief head of masquerade) from Ọ̀jẹ̀ family (family of masquerades). It is mandatory for the children of the dead to perform this final burial rite for their dead mother because if they fail to do it, things may not be moving well for either the dead in the world beyond or for the children she left behind in this world. The emergence of western civilization has made great changes both negatively and positively on the popularity of Ìrèmọ̀jé and Ìsàà ró burial rites respectively. This paper discovered that there is that of valuable documentation of Iremoje/Isipa (Hunting chants and funeral rites for Men) and Isaaro (The final funeral rites for Women) in spite of the existence of enormous works on Yoruba Verbal arts and oral literature. The implication of this finding reveal that if a study of this type is not promoted, Yoruba traditions and valuable oral renditions would be endangered. This could further prompt Yoruba journeys to extinction as many studies have shown that English dominance of Yoruba is changing the language attitude of Yoruba native speakers oral and written discusses. The Yoruba natives have flair for us of English than the use of Yoruba because of the inherent values of English in Nigeria and the world at large. This paper concludes that, despite the negative effect of western education and foreign religions in the foregoing, the technological advancement on Ìrèmọ̀jé and Ìsàà ró has shown that the future of both genres are bright as long as the Yoruba race exists.

Abstract:The main objective of this research was to study culture and arts in the form of performing arts, which have a significant role in the preservation of tradition through the perception of communication semiotics. The suguh ritual is a presentation that is carried out before the jaranan pogogan traditional performance art activity in Nganjuk Regency. The suguh ritual is expected to represent language indirectly through the semiotics of communication during its implementation. In addition, the preservation of traditional performing arts through the perception of this ritual can provide the right image to maintain the preservation of traditional arts in the Nganjuk Regency. This ritual of regeneration is still occurring to this day. This research was a qualitative descriptive study. The literacy process used to determine information results were obtained from informants who distributed data in Nganjuk Regency. Researchers also conducted interviews, observed and collected data in the field. This research is expected to preserve the jaranan pogogan’s role in the suguh ritual and serve as non-degraded cultural manifestations in technological developments 4.0.

Abstract:The culture and artistic heritage of Ghana have been endorsed by the rich influence of Akan symbols like Adinkra , the akuaba doll, and others from various ethnic groups. However, the integration of ethnically unique near-extinct symbols into an art piece to highlight the cultural diversity of Ghana for wall hanging is rare. This work brings to life indigenous Ghanaian symbols on the verge of extinction from four ethnic groups, namely, the Akan , Ewe , Ga-Adangbe , and Mole-Dagbani to design a wall hanging for interior decoration, especially for public spaces by adopting Cora Marshal's aesthetico research to generate a "Quali-Aesthetico" model. The design aesthetically ingrained conceptual aboriginal art and near-extinct indigenous Ghanaian symbols from the four ethnic groups as inspiration. The creative integration of these symbols yielded an interesting art piece that provides a unique ambiance for a simulated interior-decorated airport and an art gallery suitably displayed on flat interior surfaces. Besides the artistic expression of the art piece, interpretations of the uniquely combined symbols and their philosophical meanings have been provided to educate the public about the rich Ghanaian cultural heritage. The art piece also seeks to preserve near-extinct identity symbols and create a sense of belonging for the younger generation.

Abstract:This paper explores the cultural and spiritual significance of Mongolian Oboo sacrifices from an anthropological perspective. Oboo, traditional cairns or shrines assembled from stones and wooden materials, often located on hilltops or mountain peaks, serve as media of spiritual communication and ceremonial offerings. The practices reinforce communal bonds and tradition continuance and carry several symbolic meanings related to both natural and spiritual realms. The study explores the form and content of Oboo sacrifices, demonstrating how they embody Mongolians' religious ideologies and symbolize the interconnection between humans and the natural world. Furthermore, the paper studies how the rituals form collective memory and a sense of group identity for Mongolians. Through this investigation, the research illuminates the enduring resilience and sophistication of Mongolian traditional customs, underscoring their cultural significance.

Abstract:Sorong serah aji krama tradition is one of the wedding ceremonies series by the Sasak tribe that has been preserved to this day. This tradition is a form of traditional cultural expression of society represented through symbols on the means used that can influence the social interaction of the societies in Bayan in daily life, given that the symbols in the tradition are closely linked with how humans should act in society. Therefore, the issue discussed in this research is: (1) how does the process of sorong serah aji krama tradition in Bayan. (2) how is the symbolic interaction in the sorong serah aji krama tradition in Bayan? (3) What are the implications of symbolic interaction in the Sorong serah tradition over the social interaction of the societies in Bayan? This research object is a tradition of solid serah aji krama in Bayan, north Lombok, that will be researched using qualitative descriptive methods through observations, interviews, and documentation techniques of data collection. This research tries to find the symbolic form of interaction and the implication of symbolic interaction to the social interaction of society by using the symbolic interaction theory. The conclusion is this tradition begins with memulang, sejati selabar, tekang pengeraos, sorong serah aji krama, and ends with tekang pengeraos. Symbols that appear consist of gegawan, language, and behavior. The whole aspect of the symbol in the traditions relating to the godhead, nature, and social relations implicates the social interaction of indigenous societies.

Abstract:The aim of this research is to determine the series of processes of the nena ozo wa'u tradition (death delivery) in the Bhoanawa Muslim community and to find out the meaning of the nena ozo wa'u tradition (death event) in the Bhoanawa Muslim community. The method in this research is the qualitative with observation, interview and documentation collection techniques. The results showed that the series of nena ozo wa'u events occurred on the third day after the day of death. The initial preparations for the bereaved family invited the Embu ka, religious leaders (mosque imams), funeral directors as well as family and neighbors. Before carrying out the nena ozo wa'u tradition, the event was preceded by a tahlilan prayer. Prayers are offered for the smooth passage and safety of the soul of the deceased to the afterlife. After the tahlilan prayer is over, the next event is nena ozo wa'u (preparing the equipment that must be taken out). The equipment was delivered to the house of the mosque imam and to the three houses of the caretaker or person who washed the body. 1). Firstly, the mothers who attended the event, began to select and separate the equipment sent by Ka embu such as sarongs (textiles), rice, detergent, bath soap, toothpaste, vegetables, fruit and other equipment available depending on the intentions and sincerity of the bereaved family. 2), sent four people to take them to the house of the mosque imam and the three houses of the caretaker of the body. 3). distributed to families, existing equipment including valuables, clothing or used items left by the deceased/deceased are distributed to families or people in need. The meanings contained in the nena ozo wa'u tradition include religious meaning, the meaning of friendship/brotherhood and the meaning of sharing.

Abstract:The prime time of the Yangshao Culture refers to the middle phase(Miaodigou Phase) of the Yangshao Culture.The newly discovered tombs at Xipo in Lingbao County,Baligang in Dengzhou County,and Nanjiaokou in Sanmenxia City,provide us with more materials for the study of tombs and mortuary rites of the period.This article also discusses summarily the chronology of tombs of this period,the mortuary rites of them,and the connection of mortuary rites of the Yangshao culture and those of neighboring cultures.

Abstract:OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying, Ahead of Print. The meaning ascribed to death differs from one society to the other. This study adopts the descriptive method in unraveling the ritual of burial practices among the Ilaje people of Nigeria's Niger delta. Based on linguistic similarities, Ilaje people are part of the Yoruba ethnic group of Nigeria's Southwest area. Among the people, burial accorded to the dead is based on how the deceased died. The Ilaje groups death into five distinctive categories - death due to old-age, death caused by witchcraft or evil spirit, death through drowning by accident, death through curse, and death due to suicide. For the people, adult's death has two layers of meaning: sorrow and merriment. We conclude that physical death is viewed as part of the continuum of life's circle; it is the point when the dead pass to the realm of the ancestor who may be reborn into the family in the future.

Abstract:This research delves into the musical iconicity found within Adu Safo's music composition, "Kɔkɔsakyi" (Vulture), going beyond its mere melody to explore its cultural and symbolic dimensions. Employing a semiotic framework, the composition was sampled purposefully and used as case study to examine how various musical elements evoke and symbolize non-musical concepts, particularly focusing on the representation of the vulture as a symbol of procrastination within Ghanaian society. Using the idea of the theory of semiotics and its inherent analytical frame, the study unravels the understanding of Adu Safo's compositional techniques, shedding light on the creation of iconic music. Key findings indicate that "Kɔkɔsakyi" skillfully utilises melody, rhythm, and lyrics to depict the character of the vulture, offering insightful reflections on the perils of procrastination. By integrating sound and text within the cultural context of Kɔkɔsakyi, the composition underscores the capacity of a musical composition as a potent medium for conveying socio-cultural values. Ultimately, this paper serves as a valuable resource for educators, students, and composers alike, offering insights into the use of iconic representations in art music compositions.

Abstract:Aesthetics and rituals predominate in Urhobo culture and traditions. This article highlights the symbolism of what is generally regarded as beauty in Urhobo cultural life – Opha. The ritual process of the Opha is a rite of passage for young girls entering into adulthood. These processes have potential aesthetic format that are acceptable to the generality of Urhobo society. The article notes that the process over time has become a recognized cultural matrix as an institution for Africans.
