Abstract:Multidisciplinary research on human remains can provide important information about population dynamics, culture diffusion, as well as social organization and customs in history. In this study, multidisciplinary analyses were undertaken on a joint burial (M56) in the Shuangzhao cemetery of the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), one of the most prosperous dynasties in Chinese history, to shed light on the genetic profile and sociocultural aspects of this dynasty. The archaeological investigation suggested that this burial belonged to the Mid-Tang period and was used by common civilians. The osteological analysis identified the sex, age, and health status of the three individuals excavated from M56, who shared a similar diet inferred from the stable isotopic data. Genomic evidence revealed that these co-buried individuals had no genetic kinship but all belonged to the gene pool of the ancient populations in the Central Plains, represented by Yangshao and Longshan individuals, etc. Multiple lines of evidence, including archaeology, historic records, as well as chemical and genetic analyses, have indicated a very probable familial joint burial of husband and wives. Our study provides insights into the burial customs and social organization of the Tang Dynasty and reconstructs a scenario of civilian life in historic China.

Abstract:The prime time of the Yangshao Culture refers to the middle phase(Miaodigou Phase) of the Yangshao Culture.The newly discovered tombs at Xipo in Lingbao County,Baligang in Dengzhou County,and Nanjiaokou in Sanmenxia City,provide us with more materials for the study of tombs and mortuary rites of the period.This article also discusses summarily the chronology of tombs of this period,the mortuary rites of them,and the connection of mortuary rites of the Yangshao culture and those of neighboring cultures.

Abstract:The urban mortuary space is an essential part of the traditional social space of Beijing, revealing the complex modernization process during the period of the Republic of China (1912-1949). The main mortuary space of Beijing comprised Yidi (a traditional Chinese graveyard), mortuary temples, and modern cemeteries. The Beijing government failed to adapt or renovate the traditional mortuary space during this period. The Yidi and mortuary temples were mainly distributed in the outer city of Beijing; both of them were formed hundreds of years ago and provided for the immigrants, the poor, and beggars. The modern cemeteries injected new elements into the mortuary space, which also strengthened social class divisions and spatial segregation due to the price-driven graveyards and services. The traditional mortuary space quickly disappeared in the 1950s with great improvement in public hygiene. The complex process of Beijing’s mortuary space transformation reflects the modernization of Chinese cities.
Death Narrative in 19th-Century China: How Did Newspapers Frame Death and Dying

Abstract:This study explored the death narrative in the late Qing dynasty as expressed in Chinese newspapers in the 19th century. Using textual analysis, this study identified three themes regarding death and dying during this period: euphemism of death, definition of "good death," and Western influence on the death narrative. The study results of death narrative in the 19th century indicate the historical root of perception of death among the current Chinese people, which could help the development of a culturally sensitive hospice services for Chinese people in China and other countries by suggesting language use, patients approaching, and mental health intervention for the service providers and policy makers.

Abstract:The funeral protocol of Buddhist monks is an important part of the rituals of Han Buddhism. The monks' funeral rituals were recorded in detail in the Monastic Rules (清规) of Chan. The funeral of Chinese Buddhism monks after the Song Dynasty was known through the records of Monastic Rules. However, how it is concretely practiced is unknown. In the late Qing Dynasty, Westerners who came to China out of curiosity about the rituals of Han Buddhism recorded the process and details of the funerals of the monks in the temples they visited, among which Haichuang Temple (海幢寺) in Guangzhou ranks first. The funerals of the monks at Haichuang Temple in the late Qing Dynasty inherited the tradition of Chan funeral culture from the Song Dynasty. Meanwhile, the degradation into secular funeral culture appeared. Influenced by the secular funeral culture in Lingnan (岭南), the tombs of the monks in Chan Temples there, among them, Haichuang Temple is listed as a typical example, showed a trend toward the Shanshou Tomb (山手墓) in the early Qing Dynasty. In the late Qing Dynasty, some of the ancestral tomb-pagodas (祖师墓) in Lingnan Chan Temples abandoned the traditional form of pagodas completely and were almost the same as the Shanshou Tombs. The degradation of the funeral culture of Han Buddhism in the late Qing Dynasty reflects the declining trend of Buddhism.

Abstract:The multidisciplinary research on the Yangshao period (4200-2900 BCE) tomb M13, a joint secondary burial at the Baligang site of the Yangshao culture its Dengzhou City, Henan Province showed that there were in total 126 individuals buried in this grave. Their death crossed at least 200 years; among them, at least live individuals were from three maternal lineages, and the descent system of this group was patrilineal. There were also 138 pig mandibles buried in M13, which had beets dated and shows that they were collected across over 400 years. Based on the statistics the death population at Baligang site, it is estimated that the human bones found from M13 went through a secondary burial process during which they were probably regarded as "ceremonial objects." The joint secondary burials as M13 is seen as a result of some reburying ceremonies held at the Baligang site.

Abstract:Han China (202 BCE-220 CE) is a haunted world filled with spirits, demons, and ghosts of all kinds, whose influence is felt everywhere. In a time when variegated theories on the spirit world and mortuary traditions vie with each other for prominence, Wang Chong (27-ca. 100 CE), a most original philosopher, offers his systematic treatment of these contentious issues. Writing in a lively style with passion, reason, and patience, Wang Chong actively engages himself in these debates and applies organized and meticulous inquiry to tell fallacies of belief from what he believes to be the truth. This paper examines Wang Chong’s arguments on post-mortem existence and thrifty burial in detail and pays special attention to the strengths and weaknesses of his thesis.

Abstract:The Yuan Dynasty (AD 1271-1368) was the first dynasty in Chinese history where a minority ethnic group (Mongols) ruled. Few cemeteries containing Mongolian nobles have been found owing to their tradition of keeping burial grounds secret and their lack of historical records. Archaeological excavations at the Shuzhuanglou site in the Hebei province of China led to the discovery of 13 skeletons in six separate tombs. The style of the artefacts and burials indicate the cemetery occupants were Mongol nobles. However, the origin, relationships and status of the chief occupant (M1m) are unclear. To shed light on the identity of the principal occupant and resolve the kin relationships between individuals, a multidisciplinary approach was adopted, combining archaeological information, stable isotope data and molecular genetic data. Analysis of autosomal, mitochondrial and Y-chromosomal DNA show that some of the occupants were related. The available evidence strongly suggests that the principal occupant may have been the Mongol noble Korguz. Our study demonstrates the power of a multidisciplinary approach in elucidating information about the inhabitants of ancient historical sites.

Abstract:Hanging Coffin is a unique and ancient burial custom that has been practiced in southern China, Southeast Asia, and near Oceania regions for more than 3,000 years. Here, we conducted mitochondrial whole-genome analyses of 41 human remains sampled from 13 Hanging Coffin sites in southern China and northern Thailand, which were dated between ∼2,500 and 660 years before present. We found that there were genetic connections between the Hanging Coffin people living in different geographic regions. Notably, the matrilineal genetic diversity of the Hanging Coffin people from southern China is much higher than those from northern Thailand, consistent with the hypothesized single origin of the Hanging Coffin custom in southern China about 3,600 years ago, followed by its dispersal in southern China through demic diffusion, whereas the major dispersal pattern in Southeast Asia is cultural assimilation in the past 2,000 years.

Abstract:The multidisciplinary researches on the burial M13, a multiple collective secondary burial at the Baligang Site of the Yangshao Culture in Dengzhou City, Henan Province, showed that there had been about 126 individuals collectively buried in this grave, the dates of death of which crossed at least 200 years; among them, at least five individuals were from three maternal lineages, and the descent system of this group was patrilineal. The 138 pig mandibles buried in this grave were from a painstaking collection for over 400 years. Compared with the statistic data of the resident population in the Baligang settlement, it is estimated that the human bones of the secondary burial in this grave were that of some dead residents in this settlement recovered and reburied as ceremonial objects. The collective secondary burials as M13 would be the results of the reburying ceremonies held in the settlement once after another by an interval of a time period.

Abstract:The pre-Qin mourning and burial institutions were greatly changed in the Qin and Han period,with traditional ritual and customs gradually replaced by newly formed ones. During pre-Qin times,mourning ritual included bathing corpses,putting the face covering and mouth-,ear-,eye-and hand-pieces in corresponding positions of their body, and then holding the corpse dressing-and-tying and en-coffining rites,which are all reflected in tombs of the Western and Eastern Zhou period.In the Han period,these pre-Qin ritual and customs still prevailed in some areas,as exemplified by the common practice of the corpse dressing and tying customs in Wu's Changsha Princedom.But there arose the institution of using jade shrouds for higher-rank noblemen,such as princes and marquises, which reflected a considerable change of mouring ritual in Han times. The burial ritual of the Zhou period was embodied in the institution of using inner and outer coffins.The rites include corpse en-coffining,outer coffin examining,and inner coffin moving into the ancestral temple,decorating and loading,leading to the burial pit,and lifting and entombing.In the Han period,changes appeared mainly in the internal building of the tomb.The grave was built asarock-cut cave,a vaulted brick chamber or a stone cist,or furnished with a cypress-block structure,and generally consisted of a tomb-passage,a corridor,a tomb-gate and a chamber.These newly arising features reflected the thorough change of the coffin using institution and burial ritual of pre-Qin times. In the Shang and Zhou periods,people stressed sacrifice to the spirit of the dead in ancestral temples.From the late Western Zhou period,with the disruption of the patriarchal system and ritual institution that served the Zhou ruler's dominance,temple sacrifice began to be relaxed,and noblemen held sacrifice on their ancestors' tombs rather than in ancestral temples controlled by the patriarchal system.Thus the grave mound came into being as a sign of aristocratic status and power.In the Warring States period,the rise of princes' mausoleums and the construction of tomb gardens laid the foundation of the formation of the tomb garden building institution in the Qin and Han period.In this period,temple sacrifice and tomb sacrifice were harmonized and unified,which led to the final formation of the Western Han tomb,tomb garden and tomb temple building institutions.

Abstract:Survival and death are the two most important things in life. The ancient Chinese people attached great importance to death, so the funeral ceremonies were very complete. Since its inception, Taoism has actively participated in funeral activities, so the combination of epitaphs and tomb inscriptions has a historical origin. The establishment of a unified dynasty in the Sui Dynasty provided an opportunity for the integration and development of Taoism in the north and south. The Mao Shanzong (茅山宗) in the southern region began to spread to the north, gradually integrating Lou Guan Dao (樓觀道) and becoming the mainstream of Northern Taoism. The epitaph of Wu Tong in the Sui Dynasty is engraved with rich Taoist symbols, and the epitaph text adopts the language content of “Zhen Gao” (真誥), which is a typical representative of the integration of Northern and Southern Taoism and reflects Taoism’s concern for death.

Abstract:This article attempts to provoke a discussion concerning the definition and nature of festivals by considering the process of Mosuo funerals in Southwest China as a festival event. The role of women and men in daily life and within the funeral ceremony is discussed – the Mosuo is a matriarchal society – as are the vernacular architectural settings which have evolved for both ritual and everyday activities. The article looks at the religious perception of death in Mosuo culture, which considers funerals as celebrations of a life cycle including birth, growing up and death; through onsite observations, it documents the process of a Mosuo funeral in relation to its physical space. Even though, unlike most other festivals, funerals occur at unpredictable times, it is argued that for the Mosuo the funeral event is also a festival.

Abstract:This paper sorts the potteries of Huating Site into the following types:Dawenkou style, Liangzhu style, Xuejiagang style, Dawenkou-Liangzhu style, Daw enkou-Xuejiagang style, and the Jade articles are categorized into the followi ng groups:Liangzhu style, Huating style and syncretic style. In the light of th e cultural features of the funeral objects, the residence of Huating involves Da wenkou people, Liangzhu people and Xuejiagang people. Dawenkou people adapted th emselves to the Jade culture of Liangzhu, while Liangzhu people and Xuejiagang p eople took in some important funeral rites of Dawenkou. As Liangzhu people moved into Huating, people of Huating, who used to consist of two groups:the riches and the common, broke up into three groups:the nobles, the riches and the commo ns, and the Huating society was then transformed from a simple society into a co mplex one. Early people of these three distinct archaeological cultures lived to gether in Huating, and hence created an archaeological culture of much complexit y and diversity.

Abstract:The stories *Dan from the Fangmatan Qin manuscripts, and Taiyuan you sizhe from the Peking University Qin manuscript collection, tell of the afterlife and the proper burial and sacrificial practices for the dead through the words of two men who died and returned to life. The proper burial and sacrificial practices proposed in the texts include the replacement of money and silk with symbolic objects, the abandonment of burying a body in the bent position and the breaking of burial goods, the restriction on joint burial of husband and wife, and advocating moderation and cleanliness in sacrificial rituals at the grave. The two texts reflect how the literate class endeavored to make the old burial and sacrificial customs in Qin culture closer to the collective customs of the six eastern states.

Abstract:In this paper the author attempts to interpret traditional, epigraphic and archaeological sources of the history of the late Shang state as evidence of the practice of ritual cannibalism. One of the religious concentrations of the Late Shang culture was large-scale regular human sacrifices regulated by the state. The ritual consumption of human flesh was a part of these sacrifices ensuring continuous communication of people with sacred forces. The author believes that the anthropophagic rituals of the Shang kings were a way of acquiring magical power which consisted in sacrificial food. Satisfying the gastronomic needs of their royal ancestors was employed by the Shang kings to increase their own sacred authority and power allowing them to maintain social stability and order in the state and thereby act as a guarantor of public well-being.
