Abstract:Ultracompact directional optical nanoantennas are rapidly gaining popularity yet still challenging tasks to construct at the nanoscale. Here, we experimentally demonstrate unidirectional emission from a fluorescent nanodiamond coupled with a single gold nanorod. Different configurations of the assembled hybrid nanostructures were realized via step-by-step atomic force microscope nanomanipulation. The emission patterns can be controlled by adjusting the configurations, i.e., the gold nanorod orientation and separation with respect to the nanodiamond. Numerical simulation results reveal that the unidirectional emission can be ascribed to the interference between the electromagnetic fields produced by the dipole-like source and the out-of-phase dipole induced in the gold nanorod. The proposed hybrid nanostructures remarkably exhibit highly unidirectional emission even when the emitter is positioned up to 50nm away from the nanorod antenna and present a broad working spectral bandwidth of approximate to 200nm. The distinct features of this hybrid structure suggest potential applications for novel nanoscale light sources, sensing, and quantum information.
Effect of Mirror Quality on Optical Response of Nanoparticle‐on‐Mirror Plasmonic Nanocavities

Abstract:As an essential part of nanoparticle‐on‐mirror (NPoM) plasmonic nanocavities, metal mirrors play an important role not only in determining the optical response of the nanocavities but also their application performance. Here the effect of mirror quality on the optical response of nanosphere‐on‐mirror (NSoM) and nanocube‐on‐mirror (NCoM) nanocavities is experimentally studied. Polycrystalline sputtered gold films (SGFs), template‐stripped gold films (TSGFs), and single‐crystalline gold microflakes (GMFs) are investigated and compared. Due to the great improvement in the surface roughness that can minimize fluctuations in the gap morphology, NSoM and NCoM nanocavities formed on smooth TSGFs and GMFs have a better cavity‐to‐cavity homogeneity in the scattering spectrum than those formed on comparably rougher SGFs. In addition, there is an obvious change in the spectral positions of the resonance modes of NSoM and NCoM nanocavities formed on SGFs due to the variation in the gap morphology, which is reproduced very well by theoretical calculations based on measured dielectric functions of the gold films. Finally, due to the reduction in electron scattering losses from SGFs to TSGFs and GMFs, an increase in the quality factors and scattering intensities of the resonance modes is observed for nanocavities formed on the corresponding films.
Atomically smooth single-crystalline platform for low-loss plasmonic nanocavities

Abstract:Nanoparticle-on-mirror plasmonic nanocavities, capable of extreme optical confinement and enhancement, have triggered state-of-the-art progress in nanophotonics and development of applications in enhanced spectroscopies and molecular detection. However, the optical quality factor and thus performance of these nanoconstructs are undermined by the granular polycrystalline metal films used as a mirror. Here, we report an atomically smooth single-crystalline platform for low-loss nanocavities using chemically-synthesized gold microflakes as a mirror. Nanocavities constructed using gold nanorods on such microflakes exhibit a rich structure of plasmonic modes, which are highly sensitive to the thickness of optically-thin (down to ~15 nm) microflakes. The atomically smooth single-crystalline microflakes endow nanocavities with significantly improved quality factor (~2 times) and scattering intensity (~3 times) compared with their counterparts based on deposited films. The developed low-loss nanocavities further allow for the integration with a mature platform of fiber optics, opening opportunities for realizing nanocavity-based miniaturized photonic devices with high performance.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanocavities form very robust sub-nanometer gaps between nanometallic structures and confine light in deep subwavelength volumes to enable unprecedented control on light-matter interactions. However, spherical nanoparticles acquire various polyhedral shapes during their synthesis, which has defining impact on controlling many light-matter interactions, such as photocatalytic reactions. Here, we focus on nanocavities made of three polyhedral nanoparticles (cuboctahedron, rhombicuboctahedron, decahedron) that commonly occur during the synthesis of spherical nanoparticles. Their photonic modes have a very intricate and rich optical behaviour, both in the near- and far-field. Through a recombination technique, we obtain the total far-field produced by a molecule placed within these nanocavities, to reveal how energy couples in and out of the system. This work paves the way towards understanding and controlling light-matter interactions, such as photocatalytic reactions and non-linear vibrational pumping, in such extreme environments.

Abstract:Hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavities have emerged as a new platform to increase light-matter interaction capable to enhance the Purcell factor in a singular way not attainable with either photonic or plasmonic cavities separately. In the hybrid cavities proposed so far, mainly consisting of metallic bow-tie antennas, the plasmonic gap sizes defined by lithography in a repeatable way are limited to minimum values \approx 10 nm. Nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) cavities are far superior to achieve the smallest possible mode volumes, as gaps smaller than 1 nm can be created. Here, we design a hybrid cavity that combines a NPoM plasmonic cavity and a dielectric-nanobeam photonic crystal cavity operating at transverse-magnetic (TM) polarization. The metallic nanoparticle can be placed very close (< 1 nm) to the upper surface of the dielectric cavity, which acts as a low-reflectivity mirror. We demonstrate through numerical calculations that this kind of hybrid plasmonic-photonic cavity architecture exhibits quality factors, Q, above 10^{3} and normalized mode volumes, V , down to 10^{\num{-3}}, thus resulting in high Purcell factors (FP \approx 10^5), whilst being experimentally feasible with current technology. Our results suggest that hybrid cavities with sub-nm gaps should open new avenues for boosting light-matter interaction in nanophotonic systems.

Abstract:We present a careful numerical study of nanoparticle (NP) faceting, highlighting the great influence of small morphological changes of NP-mirror cavities on near-field enhancement in the nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPOM) system. Using a 3D finite element method (FEM) plasmon mapping method, the active transverse cavity modes can be confirmed. For the dominant mode, we have found that, by increasing the facet width, the resonance can be tuned linearly to the red with little decrease of the peak near-field intensity. It is further demonstrated that by increasing the NP size, the near-field intensity can be strongly enhanced. Understanding of such extreme optics benefits significantly both the optimized design of potential plasmonic devices and the fundamental understanding of nano-optics. Collaborative experimental considerations are expected with the rapid development of nanotechnology.

Abstract:Reduction of symmetry in plasmonic nanostructures may lead to great opportunities in controlling their photophysics of extinction, local field, light response, and plasmonic interactions. With their strong light scattering and unique modulation of field distribution, plasmonic nanocups hold great potential for applications in random laser, three-dimensional optical nanoantenna, and optical coherence tomography imaging. Here we demonstrate a novel and robust solution-phase synthesis approach to gold nanocups, which combines templating and seeded growth techniques to precisely control the size, morphology, and composition of the nanocups. Ripening is the key strategy in this wet-chemistry process to ensure primary anisotropic growth of gold within the cup-shaped space provided by each template, consisting of a silica nanosphere and a flexible resorcinol-formaldehyde resin shell. The resulting plasmonic nanocups possess three types of plasmon resonance modes, including axial, transverse S, and transverse P modes, determined by the polarization of the incident light. This robust and scalable synthesis allows the production of gold nanocups with high quality and efficiency, opening the door to unique photophysical properties and many potential applications, as demonstrated by their excellent performance in plasmonic quantum dot random lasing.

Abstract:We review here our recent studies on plasmonic enhanced photothermal effects in metallic nanostructure, and the applications of such effects. When light is shined on a prefect metamaterial absorber patterned with e-beam lithography, the gold nanoparticles (NPs) forming the absorber can be either transformed to nano-spherical-domes, or to truncated-octahedral shaped or multi-twined nanocrystals with large crystal grain sizes and flat boundary facets. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the gold NPs can be also observed. Evidences clearly show that the surface melting and the coalescence mechanism play a key role on nanocrystals formation. These melted gold nanospheres can even be transferred to another substrate, on which the transferred NPs exhibit excellent size uniformity. The strong photothermal effects can also be utilized to tune silicon photonics waveguides and resonators. It is shown that all-optical photothermal switching of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI), silicon disk resonators, and silicon ring resonators is possible with the help of plasmonic nanoheaters. The switching response time and power consumption are all at reasonably low level.
Controllable Tuning Plasmonic Coupling with Nanoscale Oxidation

Abstract:The nanoparticle on mirror (NPoM) construct is ideal for the strong coupling of localized plasmons because of its simple fabrication and the nanometer-scale gaps it offers. Both of these are much harder to control in nanoparticle dimers. Even so, realizing controllable gap sizes in a NPoM remains difficult and continuous tunability is limited. Here, we use reactive metals as the mirror so that the spacing layer of resulting metal oxide can be easily and controllably created with specific thicknesses resulting in continuous tuning of the plasmonic coupling. Using Al as a case study, we contrast different approaches for oxidation including electrochemical oxidation, thermal annealing, oxygen plasma treatments, and photo-oxidation by laser irradiation. The thickness of the oxidation layer is calibrated with depth-mode X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). These all consistently show that increasing the thickness of the oxidation layer blue-shifts the plasmonic resonance peak while the transverse mode remains constant, which is well matched by simulations. Our approach provides a facile and reproducible method for scalable, local and controllable fabrication of NPoMs with tailored plasmonic coupling, suited for many applications of sensing, photochemistry, photoemission, and photovoltaics.
Nanoantenna-Microcavity Hybrids with Highly Cooperative Plasmonic-Photonic Coupling

Abstract:Nanoantennas offer the ultimate spatial control over light by concentrating optical energy well below the diffraction limit, whereas their quality factor (Q) is constrained by large radiative and dissipative losses. Dielectric microcavities, on the other hand, are capable of generating a high Q-factor through an extended photon storage time but have a diffraction-limited optical mode volume. Here we bridge the two worlds, by studying an exemplary hybrid system integrating plasmonic gold nanorods acting as nanoantennas with an on-resonance dielectric photonic crystal (PC) slab acting as a low-loss microcavity and, more importantly, by synergistically combining their advantages to produce a much stronger local field enhancement than that of the separate entities. To achieve this synergy between the two polar opposite types of nanophotonic resonant elements, we show that it is crucial to coordinate both the dissipative loss of the nanoantenna and the Q-factor of the low-loss cavity. In comparison to the antenna-cavity coupling approach using a Fabry-Perot resonator, which has proved successful for resonant amplification of the antenna's local field intensity, we theoretically and experimentally show that coupling to a modest-Q PC guided resonance can produce a greater amplification by at least an order of magnitude. The synergistic nanoantenna-microcavity hybrid strategy opens new opportunities for further enhancing nanoscale light-matter interactions to benefit numerous areas such as nonlinear optics, nanolasers, plasmonic hot carrier technology, and surface-enhanced Raman and infrared absorption spectroscopies.

Abstract:Control of both photonic and plasmonic coupling in a single optical device represents a challenge due to the distinct length scales that must be manipulated. Here, we show that optical metasurfaces with such control can be constructed using an approach that combines top-down and bottom-up processes, wherein gold nanocubes are assembled into ordered arrays via DNA hybridization events onto a gold film decorated with DNA-binding regions defined using electron beam lithography. This approach enables one to systematically tune three critical architectural parameters: (1) anisotropic metal nanoparticle shape and size, (2) the distance between nanoparticles and a metal surface, and (3) the symmetry and spacing of particles. Importantly, these parameters allow for the independent control of two distinct optical modes, a gap mode between the particle and the surface and a lattice mode that originates from cooperative scattering of many particles in an array. Through reflectivity spectroscopy and finite-difference time-domain simulation, we find that these modes can be brought into resonance and coupled strongly. The high degree of synthetic control enables the systematic study of this coupling with respect to geometry, lattice symmetry, and particle shape, which together serve as a compelling example of how nanoparticle-based optics can be useful to realize advanced nanophotonic structures that hold implications for sensing, quantum plasmonics, and tunable absorbers.

Abstract:Active control of light-matter interactions using nanophotonic structures is critical for new modalities for solar energy production, cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), and sensing, particularly at the single-particle level, where it underpins the creation of tunable nanophotonic networks. Coupled plasmonic-photonic systems show great promise toward these goals because of their subwavelength spatial confinement and ultrahigh-quality factors inherited from their respective compo-nents. Here, we present a microfluidic approach using microbubble whispering-gallery mode cavities to actively control plasmonic- photonic interactions at the single-particle level. By changing the solvent in the interior of the microbubble, control can be exerted on the interior dielectric constant and, thus, on the spatial overlap between the photonic and plasmonic modes. Qualitative agreement between experiment and simulation reveals the competing roles mode overlap and mode volume play in altering coupling strengths.
Dispersion Control in Plasmonic Open Nanocavities

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the dependence of plasmonic resonant properties on cavity height in open circular cylinder nanocavities as a result of a strong three-dimensional confinement of the electromagnetic field, which shows a new way to tailor the dispersion of surface plasmon polaritons in cavities. The azimuthal and the axial symmetric plasmonic mode patterns are directly observed at resonant wavelengths using cathodoluminescence spectroscopy. Plasmonic modes and optical vertical cavity modes can be simultaneously excited and can coexist in a nanocavity with sufficient height. The highest quality factor, which is up to 73, is obtained in a 500 nm high cavity. The smallest mode volume is only 0.031 λ(SPP)(3), and the corresponding Purcell factor is 71. Open nanocavities provide space for the interaction between an optical emitter and a confined electromagnetic field. Many applications can be expected, such as plasmonic light-emitting devices and nanolasers.
Tailoring Plasmonic Fields with Shape-Controlled Single-Crystal Gold Metasurfaces

Abstract:Geometry and crystallinity play a critical role in the wavelength-dependent optical responses and plasmonic local near-field distributions of metallic nanostructures. Nevertheless, the ability to tailor the shape and position of crystalline metal surface nanostructures has remained a challenge that limits control of their enhanced local fields and represents a barrier to harnessing their individual and collective responses. Here, we describe a solution deposition method in the presence of anionic additives, which yields shape-controlled, single-crystal plasmonic gold nanostructures on Ag(100) and Au(100) substrates. Use of SO42- ions yields smooth Au(111)-faceted square pyramids with large plasmonic Raman enhancements. Halide additives produce textured hillocks comprising edge- and screw-type dislocations (Cl-), or platelets with large-area Au(100) terraces and (110) step edges (Br-), while SO42- and Br- additive combinations provide Au(110)-faceted square pyramids. With lithographic patterning, this chemistry yields metal deposition with precise geometry and location control to provide single-crystal, plasmonic gold metasurfaces with tailored optical response. The appropriately designed metasurfaces can then generate large Raman scattering enhancements, far greater than high density gold square pyramids with random surface disposition. Shape-controlled single-crystal plasmonic metasurfaces will thus offer opportunities to tune the characteristics of nanostructures, providing enhanced optical, photocatalytic, and sensory response.
Tunable and scalable fabrication of plasmonic dimer arrays with sub-10 nm nanogaps by area-selective atomic layer deposition

Abstract:Nanogaps in metallic nanostructures produce local field enhancements with potential applications in surface enhanced spectroscopy, solar energy conversion, and photocatalysis. Atomic layer deposition is applied as a conformal coating to modify nanogap sizes and tune the optical properties of plasmonic dimer arrays with sub-10 nm nanogaps. Nanostructures are fabricated using layers of gold and palladium to combine features of plasmonics and area-selective atomic layer deposition, where copper metal is deposited on palladium-covered surfaces. Direct measurements of optical extinction for successive smaller nanogaps and thicker copper coatings show that spectral features become broadened at first due to heating-induced shape changes but subsequently sharpen as copper coatings form on palladium structures. Furthermore, longitudinal resonances of plasmonic dimers blue shift for thin coatings due to heating and decreasing aspect ratio, but thicker coatings lead to red shifts due to narrowing nanogaps. Together, these results show that area-selective atomic layer deposition is a promising tool for achieving large area arrays of plasmonic dimers with sub-10 nm nanogaps.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanoconstructs are widely exploited to confine light for applications ranging from quantum emitters to medical imaging and biosensing. However, accessing extreme near-field confinement using the surfaces of metallic nanoparticles often induces permanent structural changes from light, even at low intensities. Here, we report a robust and simple technique to exploit crystal facets and their atomic boundaries to prevent the hopping of atoms along and between facet planes. Avoiding X-ray or electron microscopy techniques that perturb these atomic restructurings, we use elastic and inelastic light scattering to resolve the influence of crystal habit. A clear increase in stability is found for {100} facets with steep inter-facet angles, compared to multiple atomic steps and shallow facet curvature on spherical nanoparticles. Avoiding atomic hopping allows Raman scattering on molecules with low Raman cross-section while circumventing effects of charging and adatom binding, even over long measurement times. These nanoconstructs allow the optical probing of dynamic reconstruction in nanoscale surface science, photocatalysis, and molecular electronics.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

“Seeing” the Resonant SPP Modes Confined in Metal Nanocavity Via Cathodoluminescne Spectroscopy

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), which are coupled excitations of electrons bound to a metal-dielectric interface, show great potential for application in future nanoscale photonic systems due to the strong field confinement at the nanoscale, intensive local field enhancement, and interplay between strongly localized and propagating SPPs. The fabrication of sufficiently smooth metal surface with nanoscale feature size is crucial for SPPs to have practical applications. A template stripping (ST) method combined with PMMA as a template was successfully developed to create extraordinarily smooth metal nanostructures with a desirable feature size and morphology for plasmonics and metamaterials. The advantages of this method, including the high resolution, precipitous top-to bottom profile with a high aspect ratio, and three-dimensional characteristics, make it very suitable for the fabrication of plasmonic structures. By using this ST method, boxing ring-shaped nanocavities have been fabricated and the confined modes of surface plasmon polaritons in these nanocavities have been investigated and imaged by using cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy, which has been turned out to be a powerful means to characterize the resonant SPPs modes confined in metal nanocavities [1~5]. The mode of the out-of-plane field components of surface plasmon polaritons dominates the experimental mode patterns, indicating that the electron beam locally excites the out-of-plane field component of surface plasmon polaritons. Quality factors can be directly acquired from the spectra induced by the ultrasmooth surface of the cavity and the high reflectivity of the silver (Ag) reflectors. Because of its three-dimensional confined characteristics and the omnidirectional reflectors, the nanocavity exhibits a small modal volume, small total volume, rich resonant modes, and flexibility in mode control. Numerous applications, such as plasmonic filter, nanolaser, and efficient light-emitting devices, can be expected to arise from these developments.
Bridging the Nanogap with Light: Continuous Tuning of Plasmon Coupling between Gold Nanoparticles.

Abstract:The control of nanogaps lies at the heart of plasmonics for nanoassemblies. The plasmon coupling sensitively depends on the size and the shape of the nanogaps between nanoparticles, permitting fine-tuning of the resonance wavelength and near-field enhancement at the gap. Previously reported methods of molecular or lithographic control of the gap distance are limited to producing discrete values and encounter difficulty in achieving subnanometer gap distances. For these reasons, the study of the plasmon coupling for varying degrees of interaction remains a challenge. Here, we report that by using light, the interparticle distance for gold nanoparticle (AuNP) dimers can be continuously tuned from a few nanometers to negative values (i.e., merged particles). Accordingly, the plasmon coupling between the AuNPs transitions from the classical electromagnetic regime to the contact regime via the nonlocal and quantum regimes in the subnanometer gap region. We find that photooxidative desorption of alkanedithiol linkers induced by UV irradiation causes the two AuNPs in a dimer to approach each other and eventually merge. Light-driven control of the interparticle distance offers a novel means of exploring the fundamental nature of plasmon coupling as well as the possibility of fabricating nanoassemblies with any desired gap distance in a spatially controlled manner.
