Abstract:The press and sinter method remains the standard among powder metallurgy processes for powdered stainless-steel materials. It delivers low cost, low oxidation rate, and adequate corrosion resistance. Furthermore, 17-4PH is a martensitic stainless-steel that is commonly used for high-strength and medium-ductility stainless steel parts. However, a few studies have investigated the press and sinter method for producing 17-4PH parts. This shortage is due to the high hardness (low compressibility) of 17-4PH powder. Thus, the main objective of this study is to evaluate the press and sinter method in terms of the manufacturing process, the influencing factors, and the theoretical basis of press and sinter methods in conjunction with metal injection molding technology for the production of 17-4PH parts. First, the literature and monographs are examined and summarized to cover the previous results, research progress, development trends, and applications of press and sinter method 17-4PH parts. Following the theoretical analysis, the practical investigation was conducted by producing parts with cold pressing from 800 to 1600 MPa, followed by sintering: the sintering temperature was 1200 °C for one hour under a protective vacuum atmosphere. ImageJ analysis was performed to measure the sinter density. The results showed an increase in relative sinter density from 84.43% to 96.43% for 800 and 1600 MPa, respectively, while the earlier results reached 93.47%. Overall, the press and sinter method enables the production of high-hardness 17-4PH parts with a high density, without using additives like lubricants, wax, or alloying elements.

Abstract:Effective post-heat treatment is critical to achieve desired microstructure for high-performance in additively manufactured (AM) components. In this work, the influence of homogenization on microstructure-property relationship in 17-4PH steels has been investigated. Precipitation of NbC, oxides, and {\epsilon}-Cu were observed in the as-built 17-4PH steels. To design an optimum post-heat treatment, homogenization was performed at 1050oC for different times followed by aging at 482oC for 1 hour. It was identified that homogenization for 1 hour followed by aging leads to the best combination of strength and ductility due to the refinement of martensite and prior austenite grains. Improved tensile properties were achieved for the post-heat-treated alloys that exceeded the traditionally fabricated 17-4PH steels. Through comprehensive microstructure characterization, it was deduced that the incoherent {\epsilon}-Cu precipitates in the as-built alloy were dissolved through homogenization, and subsequently, re-precipitated as coherent Cu-rich clusters during aging. This study demonstrates that altering the precipitation behavior using post-heat treatment is an effective pathway to significantly improve the mechanical properties of AM alloys.

Abstract:The 17-4 precipitation hardenable (PH) stainless steel is a material of choice for various applications. Near-net-shape processes, such as the extrusion-based additive manufacturing (EAM), are attractive fabrication methods due to its simplicity, safety, and cost-effectiveness. The present study aimed to conduct a systematic comparative study into microstructural, mechanical, and electrochemical corrosion performance of EAM 17-4 PH stainless-steel samples across various states: as-printed, as-sintered, and post-processed. The as-sintered samples were further characterized, along and perpendicular to their build direction, including optical and scanning electron microscopy, tensile testing, and potentiodynamic polarization tests. The results demonstrated anisotropic behavior of as-sintered samples, dependent on build orientation. The samples printed perpendicular to the build direction demonstrated better mechanical performance, with higher ultimate tensile strength (28%) and elongation to failure (eightfold) compared to those printed along the build direction. In particular, the corrosion potential and pitting potential along the build direction (− 0.108 V, 0.059 V vs SCE, respectively) demonstrated better electrochemical corrosion properties, as compared to perpendicular to the build direction (− 0.181 V, − 0.015 V vs SCE, respectively). The effect of post-processing, encompassing machining and heat treatments (H900 and H1150), was investigated and compared with those of conventionally and additively manufactured 17-4 PH stainless-steel counterparts, offering a holistic understanding of the intricate interplay between processing parameters, microstructural evolution, and material properties, notably in the context of electrochemical corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Micro-powder injection molding (μPIM) is a modification of powder injection molding (PIM) process and a globally recognized manufacturing process route that can be used largely to produce sophisticated micro-sized components using a wide range of metals and ceramics. The demand of μPIM process is currently increasing in various applications in telecommunication, electronics, aerospace, biomedical, and automotive industries. In this research work, sintering at three different temperatures between 1250 °C and 1350 °C at a heating rate of 10 °C/min with a dwelling period of 3 h on micro-injection molded and debound (solvent and thermal) micro-sized components of stainless steel 17-4PH (SS 17-4PH) was carried out. After the sintering operation, defect-free SS 17-4PH micro-specimens were achieved. The relative density, which is referred to as an important physical property of SS 17-4PH micro-parts, increased substantially from 95.3% to 97.5% when the sintering temperature was enhanced from 1250 °C to 1350 °C. The maximum shrinkage of 12.9% was observed in micro-sized specimens at the sintering temperature of 1350 °C. After the completion of sintering process, the findings revealed that SS 17-4PH micro-parts can be produced successfully on the grounds of μPIM process employing the SS 17-4PH feedstock with powder loading of 69 vol.%.

Abstract:This study explores the influence of particle size distribution (PSD) and heat treatment on 17-4 PH stainless steel fabricated by selective laser melting, which greatly improved the elongation of the material on the basis of ensuring the strength. Scanning electron microscope and electron backscattering diffraction were used to characterize the microstructure of 17-4 PH stainless steel. 17-4 PH stainless steel PSD + and PSD-samples have obtained equiaxed grain, and the internal tissue distribution in PSD + sample crystals is uneven. By reason of the gas in the large partials of PSD+ powder falling into the size distribution of 49μm -58.9μm, it was difficult to escape during the SLM process, which reduced the material density and mechanical properties. Compared with the PSD+ specimens, the tensile strength, hardness and elongation of the PSD-specimens are increase to 345.2 HV, 938.7 MPa, and 22%, respectively. This trend is retained after heat treatment, and the surface hardness, tensile strength and elongation rate of PSD- HT specimens, which are 5.3%, 5.4% and 12.9% higher compared with the PSD+ HT specimens, respectively.

Abstract:17-4 PH stainless steel (SS) is a precipitation-hardening (PH) type of steel manufactured by selective laser melting (SLM) and known for high strength and corrosion resistance. The selection of process parameters plays an important role to reduce defects and improve mechanical properties. This study investigated the effect of hexagonal and chessboard scan strategies on relative density and residual stress of SLM-printed 17-4 PH SS samples. Relative density decreased as the scan strategy changed from hexagonal to chessboard due to insufficient melting, which causes pores in the samples and the residual stress was lower in the chessboard scan strategy due to lower thermal gradient. In this study, the hexagonal scan strategy was chosen based on higher relative density. The microstructure and mechanical properties of as-built and heat-treated (SA, SA + H900, SA + H1150) samples for optimized scan strategy were studied. The microstructure of 17-4 PH SS contains austenite and martensite. Austenite in as-built samples was retained due to nitrogen inert atmosphere, which acts as an austenite stabilizer and this can be further reduced by heat treatments, which is confirmed by EBSD and XRD. Precipitates were formed during aging heat treatments, which effects the mechanical properties. Mechanical properties depended on martensitic phase fraction and grain size. Grain size decreased from as-built to heat treatments. The increase in martensitic phase fraction and decrease in grain size resulted in high hardness and high strength. In this study, SA + H1150 samples were completely converted into martensite and showed higher mechanical properties.

Abstract:The 17-4 precipitation-hardened (PH) stainless steel was prepared by laser-powder bed fusion (L-PBF), and the effects of different aging temperatures on the microstructures and properties of 17-4PH stainless steel were systematically studied. The results show that the 17-4PH stainless steel prepared by laser powder bed fusion requires a solid solution treatment in order to obtain the lath martensite structure, and then the niobium carbides and ε-Cu phase nanoparticles were precipitated by aging treatment to improve the strength of 17-4PH stainless steel. When the aging heat treatment parameter is 450 °C/5 h, the mechanical properties of the 17-4PH stainless steel are better, and the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation (El) are 1387 MPa and 7.3%, respectively. Compared with the as-printed 17-4PH stainless steel, the ultimate tensile strength of aging heat treatment exhibits an increase of 25.2%, and then, as the increase of aging temperature, the niobium carbides and ε-Cu precipitation phase become coarser, resulting in a decrease in the strength of 17-4PH stainless steel and an increase in plasticity.

Abstract:This paper examines the effect of intrinsic heat treatment, i.e., multiple transient heating from subsequent passes, and post-processing heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 17-4PH stainless steel fabricated by wire-arc directed energy deposition. By carefully controlling the interpass temperature to remain below the martensitic transformation start (M s ) temperature, intrinsic heat treatment effectively triggers the formation of Cu-rich clusters and the reversion of austenite. This approach results in a concurrent enhancement in the ultimate tensile strength, increasing from 1036 MPa to 1128 MPa, and elongation, increasing from 13.2% to 18.5%, for the as-built part. During post-processing heat treatment, the microstructural response to direct aging treatment hinges on the initial microstructure induced by intrinsic heat treatment. Notably, direct aging treatment significantly enhances the hardness and ultimate tensile strength of the as-built part created at an interpass temperature surpassing the M s temperature. Conversely, its influence on the mechanical properties of the as-built component, fabricated at an interpass temperature lower than the M s temperature, remains minimal. Additionally, the application of a solution treatment effectively eradicates the inherent microstructural characteristics, regardless of the initial fabrication conditions. Nonetheless, the grain size of the solution-treated specimen is markedly influenced by the as-built microstructure. Ultimately, a judicious amalgamation of intrinsic and post-processing heat treatments yields an exceptional combination of properties, including high hardness (465 HV), ultimate tensile strength (1437 MPa), and elongation (14.5%). These results underscore the significance of a comprehensive consideration of intrinsic and post-processing heat treatments to tailor the microstructure and mechanical properties of 17-4PH steel fabricated by wire-arc directed energy deposition.

Abstract:This study selected 17-4PH (Type 630) precipitation-hardening stainless steel as the raw material. After subjecting the material to precipitation hardening and softening heat treatments, the effects of these treatments on the microstructural characteristics and mechanical properties were investigated, along with a thermal fatigue test. The results showed that after the precipitation hardening heat treatment, the ultimate tensile strength and hardness of 17-4PH stainless steel increased. However, the ductility was around 2%, indicating a severe brittleness effect, which is unfavorable for ordnance applications. A double aging treatment for 12 h resulted in a combination of softness and ductility, with an ultimate tensile strength of 900 MPa, ductility of 26%, and hardness HRC 28. These material properties are suitable for cold forging in ordnance and other applications. In addition, a thermal fatigue test was conducted on the softened 17-4PH material from 750 °C to room temperature. After 3000 thermal cycles, there was no significant change in material properties, ensuring it can withstand 3000 rounds of gunfire in a barrel with excellent durability. Furthermore, XRD and fracture surface analysis confirmed that the softening mechanism of 17-4PH stainless steel and its high-temperature phase stability could provide a reference for cold forging and high-temperature applications.

Abstract:Selective laser melting (SLM) processed stainless steel usually exhibits an inhomogeneous microstructure in the as-built condition. The effect of powder chemical composition on the microstructural evolution of SLM processed 17-4 PH in the as-built condition was studied. A path to achieve a fully martensitic 17-4 PH component in the as-built condition by fine-tuning the alloy composition without any post-built heat treatments was demonstrated. The as-built 17-4 PH phase transformation from δ ferrite to austenite (γ) and subsequently to martensite (α') was governed by the concentrations of ferrite and austenite stabilizing elements as represented by a chromium to nickel equivalent (Creq/Nieq) value. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis revealed that increase in the WRC-1992 equations based Creq/Nieq value to ≥ 2.65 resulted in coarse δ ferrite grains with a <100> preferential crystal orientation along the build direction. Epitaxial growth of semi-circular and columnar δ ferrite grains accompanied by a marginal volume fraction of retained austenite and transformed martensitic phases was observed. Retained austenite and transformed martensitic phases exhibited a fine grain structure preferentially along the coarse ferrite grain boundaries. Decreasing the Creq/Nieq value to 2.36 induced δ ferrite grain refinement with a significant amount of transformed martensite in the as-built condition. EBSD phase composition analysis along with thermodynamic equilibrium modeling implies that a lower Creq/Nieq value promotes martensite formation resulting in a less retained δ ferrite in the as-built condition.

Abstract:Abstract Achieving ultra-high strength without sacrificing too much ductility is the focus of attention in nanostructured materials. Here, the strengthening mechanism and property enhancement of surface-mechanically treated 17-4PH stainless steel (SS17-4PH) were investigated. Our findings show that a grain refinement and elongated lath-like martensitic grain (~ 50 nm thick) could be produced after surface treatment. The grain size remains in the nanoscale, and random crystallographic orientations with the presence of nanocrystallites characterize the nanocrystalline grains formed on the treated sample. This contributes to the property enhancement with a yield strength of about 901 MPa and a reduced elongation to failure of about 17%. The atom probe tomography (APT) characterization unveiled the emergence of high-density precipitate (Cu-rich) at the material surface, with a number density of about 2.6255 × 10 24 m −3 and an average radius of 2.22 nm. Besides, the dislocation activities caused by SMAT result in the gradual breakdown of precipitates into smaller sizes and final dissolution in the matrix, increasing the number of nucleation sites and leading to more grain refinement processes. The grain boundary, dislocation densities, and the Cu-rich precipitate greatly influence the strengthening mechanism of surface-treated SS17-4PH.

Abstract:Abstract 17-4 PH stainless steel alloy has been widely used in the field of defense industry such as weapon equipment, aerospace, nuclear energy and so on because of its high strength, high toughness, high temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. In order to meet the flexible manufacturing requirements of multi-variety small batch complex structure products with lower cost and higher efficiency, Selective laser melted 17-4PH stainless steel alloy has become the focus of research in the field of rapid alloy manufacturing in recent years. This paper studied the density characteristics and the distribution characteristics of holes and spheroidization phenomena of 17-4 PH pre-alloyed powder subjected to multidimensional temperature conduction under selective laser melting, and the mechanism of defect generation under temperature conduction is proposed. Finally, the optimal selection of the combination of different process parameters waere carried out by orthogonal test, and it was found that the comprehensive mechanical behaviour of the 17-4 PH stainless steel alloy after formed exceeded the ASTM A564 standard (the yield strength is 1132 MPa, the tensile strength is 1323 MPa, the elongation is 16.6%).
Optimization of Aging Temperature and Heat-Treatment Pathways in Additively Manufactured 17-4PH Stainless Steel

Abstract:This study investigates the tensile behaviors of additively manufactured (AM) 17-4PH stainless steels heat-treated within various temperature ranges from 400 °C to 700 °C in order to identify the effective aging temperature. Despite an aging treatment of 400-460 °C increasing the retained austenite content, an enhancement of the tensile properties was achieved without a strength-ductility trade-off owing to precipitation hardening by the Cu particles. Due to the intricate evolution of the microstructure, aging treatments above 490 °C led to a loss in yield strength and ductility. A considerable rise in strength and a decrease in ductility were brought about by the increase in the fraction of precipitation-hardened martensitic matrix in aging treatments over 640 °C. The impact of heat-treatment pathways on aging effectiveness and tensile anisotropy was then examined. Direct aging at 482 °C for an hour had hardly any effect on wrought 17-4PH, but it increased the yield strength of AM counterparts from 436-457 to 588-604 MPa. A solid-solution treatment at 1038 °C for one hour resulted in a significant drop in the austenite fraction, which led to an increase in the yield (from 436-457 to 841-919 MPa) and tensile strengths (from 1106-1127 to 1254-1256 MPa) with a sacrifice in ductility. Improved strength and ductility were realized by a solid-solution followed by an aging treatment, achieving 1371-1399 MPa. The tensile behaviors of AM 17-4PH were isotropic both parallel and perpendicular to the building direction.

Abstract:Metal injection moulding (MIM) is a metalworking technology for producing a small and complex product as well as high efficiency. In this process, the sintering parameter is an important process that must be controlled especially the sintering atmosphere to optimise the product. In the previous study, the sintering process was conducted by using a vacuum atmosphere that resulted in the formation of porosity as a major problem. This study was aimed to understand the influence of argon atmosphere in the sintering process with different temperature in order to improve the relative density of 17-4 PH Stainless Steel. The 17-4 PH Stainless Steel feedstock injected to the mould using injection moulding machine. After injection, the solvent debinding process was carried out at 50 oC with hexane solution for 1.5 h. Thermal debinding was performed at 510 oC using a vacuum furnace with heating rate and holding time were 1 °C min−1 and 60 min, respectively. Afterwards, the resulting sample was heated at the various sintering temperature of 1320 °C, 1340 °C, 1360 °C, and 1380 °C with 5 °C min−1 heating rate and 90 min holding time in an argon atmosphere with flowing rate of 1 litre min−1. These study revealed an argon atmosphere sintering process influenced the content reduction of porosity due to increasing relative density. According to these results, the optimum sintering temperature by using an argon atmosphere was achieved at 1360 oC.

Abstract:As a material for conventional manufacturing, iron and its alloys had been an object of numerous studies in the past and, as a result, steel became one of the best-known metal alloys in industry. However, new manufacturing technologies, such as additive manufacturing (AM), open new possibilities for the same materials. In this paper, we investigate stainless steel powder for additive manufacturing technologies and parts fabricated from it. Powder chemical composition and morphology are presented in the study. The influence of laser power and laser scanning speed on the mechanical properties of materials and microstructure was studied, and the experimental results showed the optimal energy density values between 50 and 65 J/mm3. However, the value of energy density varies depending on which parameters are observed, i.e. the optimum energy density value is different for the ultimate tensile stress (UTS) and surface roughness or the Young’s modulus and hardness.

Abstract:<p>17-4PH stainless steel parts, fabricated by selective laser melting, were subjected to the solution and aging treatments conducted under vacuum and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) conditions. The microstructure of as-built and heat-treated specimens were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Mechanical properties were evaluated using microhardness and tensile testing. The relative density of the as-built samples was improved after the conduction of HIP treatment. Microstructural characterization showed that precipitates with the co-occurrences of Cu-, Mn-, Si- and Nb-enrichments were formed in the HIP-processed specimen. Results of mechanical testing indicated that a simultaneous improvement of tensile strength and ductility could be obtained through solutionizing and aging treatments done in the HIP followed by a high-pressure gas quenching. In addition, a significant enhancement of tensile strength without sacrificing ductility could be attained by combining solutionizing treatment done under high pressure and consequent aging followed with water cooling.</p>

Homogenization timing effect on microstructure and precipitation strengthening of 17–4PH stainless steel fabricated by laser powder bed fusion

Abstract:Effective post-heat treatment is critical to achieve desired microstructure for high performance of additive manufacturing (AM) components. In this work, the timing influence of homogenization and its tuning mechanism on microstructure-property relationships of 17–4PH steels fabricated by laser powder bed fusion have been studied systematically. A mixed microstructure of lath martensite, δ-ferrite and precipitation of NbC, nano-oxides and fcc ε-Cu were observed in the as-built sample. To explore an optimum post-heat treatment, homogenization was performed at 1150 °C for different times followed by aging at 482 °C for 1 h with the help of thermodynamic simulations. It is identified that homogenization for 1 h followed by aging leads to the best combination of strength and ductility due to the refinement of martensite and precipitation distribution. The optimal tensile properties are comparable to the traditionally fabricated 17–4PH material. The martensite growth and coarsening of NbC and nano-oxides during long-term homogenization impair the strength and toughness significantly. The secondary phases of NbC, nano-oxides and CRPs play critical roles in the strengthening and fracture via their precipitation and distribution by tuning the homogenization time. This study demonstrates that altering the martensite lath and precipitation behavior using rational homogenization heat treatment is an effective pathway to improve the mechanical properties of additive manufactured 17–4PH alloys.

Abstract:Aging is indispensable for balancing the strength and ductility of selective laser melted (SLM) precipitation hardening steels. This work investigated the influence of aging temperature and time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of SLM 17-4 PH steel. The 17-4 PH steel was fabricated by SLM under a protective argon atmosphere (99.99 vol.%), then the microstructure and phase composition after different aging treatments were characterized via different advanced material characterization techniques, and the mechanical properties were systematically compared. Coarse martensite laths were observed in the aged samples compared with the as-built ones, regardless of the aging time and temperature. Increasing the aging temperature resulted in a larger grain size of the martensite lath and precipitation. The aging treatment induced the formation of the austenite phase with a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure. With prolonged aging treatment, the volume fraction of the austenite phase increased, which agreed with the EBSD phase mappings. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and yield strength gradually increased with increasing aging times at 482 °C. The UTS reached its peak value after aging for 3 h at 482 °C, which was similar to the trend of microhardness (i.e., UTS = 1353.4 MPa). However, the ductility of the SLM 17-4 PH steel decreased rapidly after aging treatment. This work reveals the influence of heat treatment on SLM 17-4 steel and proposes an optimal heat-treatment regime for the SLM high-performance steels.

Abstract:Research into precipitation hardening in additively manufactured (AM) maraging steel is mainly conducted on the material after several hours of holding at the peak hardening temperatures of 450–500 °C. Lower temperatures are expected to have little to no effect on mechanical properties even after very long holds at these temperatures. This article, however, demonstrates that new precipitates grow and cause a noticeable hardening effect in solution-annealed AM maraging steel after only a 6-hour hold at a temperature of 350 °C. High-resolution scanning and transmission electron microscopy (HRSEM, HRTEM) was used to identify the new precipitates. Very fine coherent microdomains containing mainly nickel and molybdenum layers were found. Particles of a new phase, Al0.5CNi3Ti0.5, were also detected. Additionally, various precipitates were also found in both the as-built and the AM solution-annealed maraging steel samples. Precipitates such as Ni3Ti, Al0.3Ni0.35Ti0.35 and Al2O5Ti, were also observed in the as-built condition. After subsequent solution annealing at 820 °C additional Ni3Mo particles and another type of Ti-rich particles, Ni4Ti3, were further found in the AM steel microstructure. The additional new phases which precipitated during the final hardening at 350 °C caused an 18 % (200 MPa) increase in strength.

Abstract:Abstract The 17–4 Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel (PH SS) manufactured by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) has wide application perspectives, but they are limited due to defects and anisotropy. The selection of the appropriate process variables plays a fundamental part in the microstructure and in the determination of the final mechanical and corrosion properties. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the corrosion behavior, hardness and microstructure of 17–4 PH SS manufactured by SLM in comparison to the commercial counterparts. The anisotropic behavior was investigated by analyzing the microstructure–hardness and corrosion interrelationship, both in the surface of the construction platform and in the growth direction of the element. The corrosion behavior of the SLM 17–4PH SS in its natural state was investigated in relation to that of the 17–4 PH SS heat treated in a 0.1 M NaCl + 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 solution, using three electrochemical techniques. The results confirmed that the corrosion resistance of SLM 17–4 PH SS was considerably better than that of the forging, even after 60 days of immersion in the test solution. This was attributed to the absence of important manufacturing defects, to the fine microstructure with an important amount of austenite produced by SLM, and to a small amount of non-metallic inclusions precipitated as a result of the fast cooling and the high speed of solidification associated with the SLM process.
