Abstract:The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is superior to the quantum spin Hall (QSH) effect, which can avoid the inelastic scattering of two edge electrons located on one side of a topological nontrivial material, and thus it has attracted both theoretical and experimental interest. Here, we systematically investigate the lattice structures, and electronic and magnetic properties of hydrogenated arsenene decorated with certain transition metals (Cr, Mo and Cu) based on density-functional theory. A unique QAH effect in Mo@AsH is predicted, whose Chern number (C = 1) indicates only one chiral edge channel located on its one side. Then, we prove that this QAH effect realization is closely related with band inversion, which is the competitive result between its spin-orbit coupling (SOC) strength and exchange field. The quantum state of Mo@AsH can also be tuned by an external strain, similar to SOC, and it is noted that its increased topological gap of about 35 meV under 5.0% tensile strain, is large enough to realize the QAH effect at room-temperature. Additionally, the quantum valley Hall effect in Cu@AsH contributed by the inequality of AB sublattices is also found. Our results reveal the physical mechanism to realize the QAH effect in TM@AsH and provide a platform for electrically controllable topological states, which are highly desirable for nanoelectronics and spintronics.
Thermodynamic Response and Neutral Excitations in Integer and Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall States Emerging from Correlated Flat Bands

Abstract:Integer and fractional Chern insulators have been extensively explored in correlated flat band models. Recently, the prediction and experimental observation of fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states with spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking have garnered attention. While the thermodynamics of integer quantum anomalous Hall (IQAH) states have been systematically studied, our theoretical knowledge on thermodynamic properties of FQAH states has been severely limited. Here, we delve into the general thermodynamic response and collective excitations of both IQAH and FQAH states within the paradigmatic flat Chern-band model with remote band considered. Our key findings include: i) In both $\nu$ = 1 IQAH and $\nu$ = 1/3 FQAH states, even without spin fluctuations, the charge-neutral collective excitations would lower the onset temperature of these topological states, to a value significantly smaller than the charge gap, due to band-mixing and multi-particle scattering; ii) By employing large-scale thermodynamic simulations in FQAH states in the presence of strong inter-band mixing between C = $\pm1$ bands, we find that the lowest collective excitations manifest as the zero-momentum excitons in the IQAH state, whereas in the FQAH state, they take the form of magneto-rotons with finite momentum; iii) The unique charge oscillations in FQAH states are exhibited with distinct experimental signatures, which we propose to detect in future experiments.

Evolution from quantum anomalous Hall insulator to heavy-fermion semimetal in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract:The ground states of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at chiral and flat-band limit with integer fillings are known from exact solutions, while their dynamical and thermodynamical properties are revealed by unbiased quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. However, to elucidate experimental observations of correlated metallic, insulating and superconducting states and their transitions, investigations on realistic, or non-chiral cases are vital. Here we employ momentum-space QMC method to investigate the evolution of correlated states in magic-angle TBG away from chiral limit at charge neutrality with polarized spin/valley, which approximates to an experimental case with filling factor $\nu=-3$. We find that the ground state evolves from quantum anomalous Hall insulator into an intriguing correlated semimetallic state possessing heavy-fermion features as AA hopping strength reaches experimental values. Such a state resembles the recently proposed heavy-fermion representations with localized electrons residing at AA stacking regions and delocalized electrons itinerating via AB/BA stacking regions. The spectral signatures of the localized and itinerant electrons in the heavy-fermion semimetal phase are revealed, with the connection to experimental results being discussed.

Quantum anomalous Hall insulator in ionic Rashba lattice of correlated electrons

Abstract:In this work, we propose an exactly solvable two-dimensional lattice model of strongly correlated electrons that realizes a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with Chern number $\mathcal{C}=1$. First, we show that the interplay of ionic potential, Rashba spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman splitting leads to the appearance of quantum anomalous Hall effect. Next, we calculate in an exact manner Chern number for the correlated system where electron-electron interactions are introduced in the spirit of Hatsugai-Kohmoto model using two complementary methods, one relying on the properties of many-body groundstate and the other utilizing single-particle Green's function, and subsequently we determine stability regions. By leveraging the presence of inversion symmetry we find boundaries between topological and trivial phases on the analytical ground. Notably, we show that in the presence of correlations onset of topological phase is no longer signalled by a spectral gap closing consistently with phenomenon called in literature as {\it first-order topological transition}. We provide a clear microscopic understanding of this inherently many-body feature by pinpointing that the lowest energy excited states in the correlated system are no longer of the single-particle nature and thus are not captured by a spectral function.

Abstract:We present a microscopic theory to give a physical picture of the formation of the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetized graphene coupled with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Based on a continuum model at valley K or K', we show that there exist two distinct physical origins of the QAH effect at two different limits. For large exchange field M, the quantization of Hall conductance in the absence of Landau-level quantization can be regarded as a summation of the topological charges carried by skyrmions from real-spin textures and merons from AB sublattice pseudospin textures, while for strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling lambda(R), the four-band low-energy model Hamiltonian is reduced to a two-band extended Haldane model, giving rise to a nonzero Chern number C = 1 at either K or K'. In the presence of staggered AB sublattice potential U, a topological phase transition occurs at U = M from a QAH phase to a quantum valley Hall phase. We further find that the band gap responses at K and K' are different when lambda(R), M, and U are simultaneously considered. We also show that the QAH phase is robust against weak intrinsic spin-orbit coupling lambda(SO), and it transitions to a trivial phase when lambda(SO) > ( root M-2 + lambda(2)(R) + M)/2. Moreover, we use a tight-binding model to reproduce the ab initio method obtained band structures through doping magnetic atoms on 3 x 3 and 4 x 4 supercells of graphene, and explain the physical mechanisms of opening a nontrivial bulk gap to realize the QAH effect in different supercells of graphene.
Quantum anomalous Hall effect from intertwined moiré bands

Abstract:Electron correlation and topology are two central threads of modern condensed matter physics. Semiconductor moiré materials provide a highly tunable platform for studies of electron correlation. Correlation-driven phenomena, including the Mott insulator, generalized Wigner crystals, stripe phases and continuous Mott transition, have been demonstrated. However, nontrivial band topology has remained elusive. Here we report the observation of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moiré heterobilayers. Unlike in the AA-stacked structures, an out-of-plane electric field controls not only the bandwidth but also the band topology by intertwining moiré bands centered at different high-symmetry stacking sites. At half band filling, corresponding to one particle per moiré unit cell, we observe quantized Hall resistance, h/e2 (with h and e denoting the Planck's constant and electron charge, respectively), and vanishing longitudinal resistance at zero magnetic field. The electric-field-induced topological phase transition from a Mott insulator to a QAH insulator precedes an insulator-to-metal transition; contrary to most known topological phase transitions, it is not accompanied by a bulk charge gap closure. Our study paves the path for discovery of a wealth of emergent phenomena arising from the combined influence of strong correlation and topology in semiconductor moiré materials.

Abstract:Remarkable recent experiments have observed fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) effects at zero field and unusually high temperatures in twisted semiconductor bilayer $t$MoTe$_2$. Intriguing observations in these experiments such as the absence of integer Hall effects at twist angles where a fractional Hall effect is observed, do however remain unexplained. The experimental phase diagram as a function of twist angle remains to be established. By comprehensive numerical study, we show that band mixing has large qualitative and quantitative effects on the energetics of competing states and their energy gaps throughout the twist angle range $\theta\leq 4^\circ$. This lays the ground for the detailed realistic study of a rich variety of strongly correlated twisted semiconductor multilayers and an understanding of the phase diagram of these fascinating systems.

Abstract:Multi-orbital electronic models hosting a non-trivial band-topology in the regime of strong electronic interactions are an ideal playground for exploring a host of complex phenomenology. We consider here a sign-problem-free and time-reversal symmetric model with isolated topological (chern) bands involving both spin and valley degrees of freedom in the presence of a class of repulsive electronic interactions. Using a combination of numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo computations and analytical field-theoretic considerations we analyze the phase-diagram as a function of the flat-band filling, temperature and relative interaction strength. The low-energy physics is described in terms of a set of intertwined orders -- a spin-valley hall (SVH) insulator and a spin-singlet superconductor (SC). Our low-temperature phase diagram can be understood in terms of an effective SO(4) pseudo-spin non-linear sigma model. Our work paves the way for building more refined and minimal models of realistic materials, including moiré systems, to study the universal aspects of competing insulating phases and superconductivity in the presence of non-trivial band-topology.

Abstract:Correlation and frustration play essential roles in physics, giving rise to novel quantum phases 1,2,3,4,5,6 . A typical frustrated system is correlated bosons on moat bands, which could host topological orders with long-range quantum entanglement 4 . However, the realization of moat-band physics is still challenging. Here, we explore moat-band phenomena in shallowly inverted InAs/GaSb quantum wells, where we observe an unconventional time-reversal-symmetry breaking excitonic ground state under imbalanced electron and hole densities. We find that a large bulk gap exists, encompassing a broad range of density imbalances at zero magnetic field ( B ), accompanied by edge channels that resemble helical transport. Under an increasing perpendicular B , the bulk gap persists, and an anomalous plateau of Hall signals appears, which demonstrates an evolution from helical-like to chiral-like edge transport with a Hall conductance approximately equal to e 2 / h at 35 tesla, where e is the elementary charge and h is Planck's constant. Theoretically, we show that strong frustration from density imbalance leads to a moat band for excitons, resulting in a time-reversal-symmetry breaking excitonic topological order, which explains all our experimental observations. Our work opens up a new direction for research on topological and correlated bosonic systems in solid states beyond the framework of symmetry-protected topological phases, including but not limited to the bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect.

From a fractional quantum anomalous Hall state to a smectic state with equal Hall conductance

Abstract:The recent developments in twisted MoTe$_2$ and rhombohedral multilayer graphene have generated widespread attention to the general features of fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states, including their possible coexistence with and transition to various symmetry breaking charge ordered states. These attentions are pushing forward our knowledge of the relation between the topological order in FQAH states and the Landau-type of symmetry breaking order such as the 1D smectic electronic liquid crystal and 2D charge-density-wave (CDW) solid. Although the transitions from topological states to symmetry breaking states with trivial topology have been discussed, the road from one topological ordered state to another with the same Hall conductance and broken translational symmetry has not been found. Here we show the intriguing evidence that the FQAH to FQAH Smectic (FQAHS) transition is robustly realizable in the archetypal correlated flat Chern-band model at filling $\nu$ = 2/3. This transition is novel in that: i) the FQAHS acquires the same fractional Hall conductance as FQAH, which cannot be explained by mean-field band folding. The formation of smectic order can be viewed as perturbation around the transition point, and thus, do not destroy or change the original topology; ii) the charge excitation remains gapped across the transition although the neutral gap is closed at transition point; and iii) the transition is triggered by the softening of roton mode with the same wave vector as the smectic order. Our discovery opens countless new possibilities, both theoretical and experimental, in the fast-growing field of robust fractional Chern insulators.

Abstract:Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable Chern number. Here we report the experimental observation of a correlated Chern insulator in a TLG/hBN moiré superlattice. We show that reversing the direction of the applied vertical electric field switches TLG/hBN's moiré minibands between zero and finite Chern numbers, as revealed by dramatic changes in magneto-transport behavior. For topological hole minibands tuned to have a finite Chern number, we focus on 1/4 filling, corresponding to one hole per moiré unit cell. The Hall resistance is well quantized at h/2e2, i.e. C = 2, for |B| > 0.4 T. The correlated Chern insulator is ferromagnetic, exhibiting significant magnetic hysteresis and a large anomalous Hall signal at zero magnetic field. Our discovery of a C = 2 Chern insulator at zero magnetic field should open up exciting opportunities for discovering novel correlated topological states, possibly with novel topological excitations, in nearly flat and topologically nontrivial moiré minibands.

Signatures of Fractional Quantum Anomalous Hall States in Twisted MoTe2 Bilayer

Abstract:The interplay between spontaneous symmetry breaking and topology can result in exotic quantum states of matter. A celebrated example is the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state, which exhibits an integer quantum Hall effect at zero magnetic field thanks to its intrinsic ferromagnetism. In the presence of strong electron-electron interactions, exotic fractional-QAH (FQAH) states at zero magnetic field can emerge. These states could host fractional excitations, including non-Abelian anyons - crucial building blocks for topological quantum computation. Flat Chern bands are widely considered as a desirable venue to realize the FQAH state. For this purpose, twisted transition metal dichalcogenide homobilayers in rhombohedral stacking have recently been predicted to be a promising material platform. Here, we report experimental signatures of FQAH states in 3.7-degree twisted MoTe2 bilayer. Magnetic circular dichroism measurements reveal robust ferromagnetic states at fractionally hole filled moiré minibands. Using trion photoluminescence as a sensor, we obtain a Landau fan diagram which shows linear shifts in carrier densities corresponding to the v=-2/3 and -3/5 ferromagnetic states with applied magnetic field. These shifts match the Streda formula dispersion of FQAH states with fractionally quantized Hall conductance of -2/3$e^2/h$ and -3/5$e^2/h$, respectively. Moreover, the v=-1 state exhibits a dispersion corresponding to Chern number -1, consistent with the predicted QAH state. In comparison, several non-ferromagnetic states on the electron doping side do not disperse, i.e., are trivial correlated insulators. The observed topological states can be further electrically driven into topologically trivial states. Our findings provide clear evidence of the long-sought FQAH states, putting forward MoTe2 moiré superlattices as a fascinating platform for exploring fractional excitations.

Abstract:Abstract Flat-band physics of Moiré superlattices, originally discovered in the celebrated twisted bilayer graphene, have recently been intensively explored in multilayer graphene systems that can be further controlled by electric field. In this work, we experimentally find the evidence of correlated insulators at half filling of the electron moiré band of twisted monolayer-trilayer graphene with a twist angle around 1.2 degrees. Van Hove singularity (VHS), manifested as enhanced resistance and zero Hall voltage, is observed to be distinct in conduction and valence flat bands. It also depends on the direction and magnitude of displacement fields, consistent with the asymmetric crystal structure. While the resistance ridges at VHS can be enhanced by magnetic fields, when they cross commensurate fillings of the moiré superlattice in the conduction band, the enhancement is so strong that signatures of correlated insulator appear, which may further develop into an energy gap depending on the correlation strength. At last, Fermi velocity derived from temperature coefficients of resistivity is compared between conduction and valence bands with different displacement fields. It is found that electronic correlation has a negative dependence on Fermi velocity, which in turn could be used to quantify the correlation strength.

Correlated phases and topological phase transition in twisted bilayer graphene at one quantum of magnetic flux

Abstract:When the perpendicular magnetic flux per unit cell in a crystal is equal to the quantum of magnetic flux, $\Phi_0=h/e$, we enter the 'Hofstadter regime'. The large unit cell of moiré materials like magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) allows the experimental study of this regime at feasible values of the field around $20$ to $30$ T. In this work, we report numerical analysis of a tight-binding model for MATBG at one quantum of external magnetic flux, including the long-range Coulomb and on-site Hubbard interaction. We study the correlated states for dopings of $-2,0$ and $2$ electrons per unit cell at the mean-field level. We find competing insulators with Chern numbers $2$ and $0$ at positive doping, the stability of which is determined by the dielectric screening, which opens up the possibility of observing a topological phase transition in this system.

Abstract:The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in magnetic topological insulator (TI) represents a new state of matter originated from the interplay between topology and magnetism. The defining characteristics of the QAH ground state are the quantized Hall resistivity ($\rho_{yx}$) and vanishing longitudinal resistivity ($\rho_{xx}$) in the absence of external magnetic field. A fundamental question concerning the QAH effect is whether it is merely a zero-magnetic-field quantum Hall (QH) effect, or if it can host unique quantum phases and phase transitions that are unavailable elsewhere. The most dramatic departure of the QAH systems from other QH systems lies in the strong magnetic disorders that induce spatially random magnetization. Because disorder and magnetism play pivotal roles in the phase diagram of two-dimensional electron systems, the high degree of magnetic disorders in QAH systems may create novel phases and quantum critical phenomena. In this work, we perform systematic transport studies of a series of magnetic TIs with varied strength of magnetic disorders. We find that the ground state of QAH effect can be categorized into two distinct classes: the QAH insulator and anomalous Hall (AH) insulator phases, as the zero-magnetic-field counterparts of the QH liquid and Hall insulator in the QH systems. In the low disorder limit of the QAH insulator regime, we observe a universal quantized longitudinal resistance $\rho_{xx} = h/e^{2}$ at the coercive field. In the AH insulator regime, we find that a magnetic field can drive it to the QAH insulator phase through a quantum critical point with distinct scaling behaviors from that in the QH phase transition. We propose that the transmission between chiral edge states at domain boundaries, tunable by disorder and magnetic fields, is the key for determining the QAH ground state.

Abstract:Coupled two-dimensional electron-hole bilayers provide a unique platform to study strongly correlated Bose-Fermi mixtures in condensed matter. Electrons and holes in spatially separated layers can bind to form interlayer excitons, composite Bosons expected to support high-temperature exciton superfluids. The interlayer excitons can also interact strongly with excess charge carriers when electron and hole densities are unequal. Here, we use optical spectroscopy to quantitatively probe the local thermodynamic properties of strongly correlated electron-hole fluids in MoSe2/hBN/WSe2 heterostructures. We observe a discontinuity in the electron and hole chemical potentials at matched electron and hole densities, a definitive signature of an excitonic insulator ground state. The excitonic insulator is stable up to a Mott density of ~$0.8\times {10}^{12} \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ and has a thermal ionization temperature of ~70 K. The density dependence of the electron, hole, and exciton chemical potentials reveals strong correlation effects across the phase diagram. Compared with a non-interacting uniform charge distribution, the correlation effects lead to significant attractive exciton-exciton and exciton-charge interactions in the electron-hole fluid. Our work highlights the unique quantum behavior that can emerge in strongly correlated electron-hole systems.

Competition of Quantum Anomalous Hall States and Charge Density Wave in a Correlated Topological Model

Abstract:We investigate the topological phase transition driven by non-local electronic correlations in a realistic quantum anomalous Hall model consisting of d(xy)-d(x)(2)-y(2) orbitals. Three topologically distinct phases defined in the noninteracting limit evolve to different charge density wave phases under correlations. Two conspicuous conclusions were obtained: The topological phase transition does not involve gap-closing and the dynamical fluctuations significantly suppress the charge order favored by the next nearest neighbor interaction. Our study sheds light on the stability of topological phase under electronic correlations, and we demonstrate a positive role played by dynamical fluctuations that is distinct to all previous studies on correlated topological states.
