Abstract:A topological Mott insulator (TMI) with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and nonzero Chern number has been discovered in a real-space effective model for twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at 3/4 filling in the strong coupling limit [1]. However, the finite temperature properties of such a TMI state remain illusive. In this work, employing the state-of-the-art thermal tensor network and the perturbative field-theoretical approaches, we obtain the finite-T phase diagram and the dynamical properties of the TBG model. The phase diagram includes the quantum anomalous Hall and charge density wave phases at low T, and an Ising transition separating them from the high-T symmetric phases. Because of the proliferation of excitons-particle-hole bound states-the transitions take place at a significantly reduced temperature than the mean-field estimation. The exciton phase is accompanied with distinctive experimental signatures in such as in charge compressibilities and optical conductivities close to the transition. Our work explains the smearing of the many-electron state topology by proliferating excitons and opens an avenue for controlled many-body investigations on finite-temperature states in the TBG and other quantum moiré systems.

Correlated phases and topological phase transition in twisted bilayer graphene at one quantum of magnetic flux

Abstract:When the perpendicular magnetic flux per unit cell in a crystal is equal to the quantum of magnetic flux, $\Phi_0=h/e$, we enter the 'Hofstadter regime'. The large unit cell of moiré materials like magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) allows the experimental study of this regime at feasible values of the field around $20$ to $30$ T. In this work, we report numerical analysis of a tight-binding model for MATBG at one quantum of external magnetic flux, including the long-range Coulomb and on-site Hubbard interaction. We study the correlated states for dopings of $-2,0$ and $2$ electrons per unit cell at the mean-field level. We find competing insulators with Chern numbers $2$ and $0$ at positive doping, the stability of which is determined by the dielectric screening, which opens up the possibility of observing a topological phase transition in this system.

Abstract:Twisting two layers into a magic angle (MA) of ~1.1° is found essential to create low energy flat bands and the resulting correlated insulating, superconducting, and magnetic phases in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). While most of previous works focus on revealing these emergent states in MA-TBG, a study of the twist angle dependence, which helps to map an evolution of these phases, is yet less explored. Here, we report a magneto-transport study on one non-magic angle TBG device, whose twist angle {\theta} changes from 1.25° at one end to 1.43° at the other. For {\theta}=1.25°, we observe an emergence of topological insulating states at hole side with a sequence of Chern number |C|=4-|v|, where v is the number of electrons (holes) in moiré unite cell. When {\theta}>1.25°, the Chern insulator from flat band disappears and evolves into fractal Hofstadter butterfly quantum Hall insulator where magnetic flux in one moiré unite cell matters. Our observations will stimulate further theoretical and experimental investigations on the relationship between electron interactions and non-trivial band topology.

Helical trilayer graphene: a moiré platform for strongly-interacting topological bands

Abstract:Quantum geometry of electronic wavefunctions results in fascinating topological phenomena. A prominent example is the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in which a Hall voltage arises in the absence of an applied magnetic field. The AHE requires a coexistence of Berry curvature and spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. These conditions can be realized in two-dimensional moiré systems with broken $xy$-inversion symmetry ($C_{2z}$) that host flat electronic bands. Here, we explore helical trilayer graphene (HTG), three graphene layers twisted sequentially by the same angle forming two misoriented moiré patterns. Although HTG is globally $C_{2z}$-symmetric, surprisingly we observe clear signatures of topological bands. At a magic angle $\theta_\mathrm{m}\approx 1.8^\circ$, we uncover a robust phase diagram of correlated and magnetic states using magnetotransport measurements. Lattice relaxation leads to large periodic domains in which $C_{2z}$ is broken on the moiré scale. Each domain harbors flat topological bands with valley-contrasting Chern numbers $\pm(1,-2)$. We find correlated states at integer electron fillings per moiré unit cell $\nu=1,2,3$ and fractional fillings $2/3,7/2$ with the AHE arising at $\nu=1,3$ and $2/3,7/2$. At $\nu=1$, a time-reversal symmetric phase appears beyond a critical electric displacement field, indicating a topological phase transition. Finally, hysteresis upon sweeping $\nu$ points to first-order phase transitions across a spatial mosaic of Chern domains separated by a network of topological gapless edge states. We establish HTG as an important platform that realizes ideal conditions for exploring strongly interacting topological phases and, due to its emergent moiré-scale symmetries, demonstrates a novel way to engineer topology.

Abstract:The recent discovery of correlated insulator states and superconductivity in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has paved the way to the experimental investigation of electronic correlations in tunable flat band systems realized in twisted van der Waals heterostructures. This novel twist angle degree of freedom and control should be generalizable to other 2D systems, which may exhibit similar correlated physics behavior while at the same time enabling new techniques to tune and control the strength of electron-electron interactions. Here, we report on a new highly tunable correlated system based on small-angle twisted bilayer-bilayer graphene (TBBG), consisting of two rotated sheets of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. We find that TBBG exhibits a rich phase diagram, with tunable correlated insulators states that are highly sensitive to both twist angle and to the application of an electric displacement field, the latter reflecting the inherent polarizability of Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. We find correlated insulator states that can be switched on and off by the displacement field at all integer electron fillings of the moiré unit cell. The response of these correlated states to magnetic fields points towards evidence of electrically switchable magnetism. Moreover, the strong dependence of the resistance at low temperature and near the correlated insulator states indicates possible proximity to a superconducting phase. Furthermore, in the regime of lower twist angles, TBBG shows multiple sets of flat bands near charge neutrality, resulting in numerous correlated states corresponding to half-filling of each of these flat bands. Our results pave the way to the exploration of novel twist-angle and electric-field controlled correlated phases of matter in novel multi-flat band twisted superlattices.

Topological Jahn-Teller Mott insulators in twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract:Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene displays a rich phase diagram typical of a strongly correlated electronic system. Until now, the contribution of lattice dynamics has been mostly overlooked in favour of Coulomb repulsion, which seems however unable to provide a coherent explanation of all key experimental evidences. Nonetheless, the emergent U v (1) valley-symmetry, characterising both electronic structure and superlattice normal modes, leads to an extremely strong e × E Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling. We here show that this coupling positively interplay with Coulomb repulsion to stabilize topological Jahn-Teller Mott insulators throughout the phase diagram. Indeed, a static Jahn-Teller eﬀect, microscopically characterized by a Kekul´e distortion localised into the AA stacked regions, yields a mean-ﬁeld insulator at charge neutrality that conserves all the spatial symmetries and has the two occupied ﬂat-bands bearing opposite Chern numbers C = ± 2. The cascade of insulators derived from this parent state leads in mean-ﬁeld to topological insulators at all other integer ﬁllings ν , C = ± 2 for ν = ± 2 and C = ± 1 for ν = ± 1 , ± 3, which break mirror and time reversal symmetry, carry orbital magnetism and are spin-polarised for odd ν . When the Jahn-Teller eﬀect is instead dynamical, it may stabilise insulators with the same properties as their mean-ﬁeld counterparts but now prone to become d -wave superconductors upon doping, being alike resonating valence bond states built of topological Cooper pairs. The resulting physical scenario from our calculations is in good agreement with experimental evidences, and underline the importance of lattice dynamics in the emergence of exotic correlated states in twisted bilayer graphene. insulator at charge neutrality. The distortion mostly aﬀects the AA stacked regions and the domain walls separating Bernal stacked AB and BA regions, the latter remaining almost un-aﬀected [40]. We emphasise that the lattice displacement occurs at the zone center of the moir´e Brillouin zone and on the atomic scale of graphene, which distinguishes it from the Kekul´e state discussed in Ref. [42].

Abstract:Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) near "magic angles" has emerged as a rich platform for strongly correlated states of two-dimensional (2D) Dirac semimetals. Here we show that twisted bilayers of thin film magnetic topological insulators (MTIs) with large in-plane magnetization can realize flat bands near 2D Dirac nodes. Using a simple model for thin films of MTIs, we derive a continuum model for two such MTIs, twisted by a small angle with respect to each other. When the magnetization is in plane, we show that interlayer tunneling terms act as effective SU(2) vector potentials, which are known to lead to flat bands in TBG. We show that by changing the in-plane magnetization, it is possible to tune the twisted bilayer MTI band dispersion to quadratic band touching or to flat bands, similar to the TBG. Abstract:Interactions between electrons and the topology of their energy bands can create unusual quantum phases of matter. Most topological electronic phases appear in systems with weak electron–electron interactions. The instances in which topological phases emerge only as a result of strong interactions are rare and mostly limited to those realized in intense magnetic fields1. The discovery of flat electronic bands with topological character in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has created a unique opportunity to search for strongly correlated topological phases2–9. Here we introduce a local spectroscopic technique using a scanning tunnelling microscope to detect a sequence of topological insulators in MATBG with Chern numbers C = ±1, ±2 and ±3, which form near filling factors of ±3, ±2 and ±1 electrons per moiré unit cell, respectively, and are stabilized by modest magnetic fields. One of the phases detected here (C = +1) was previously observed when the sublattice symmetry of MATBG was intentionally broken by a hexagonal boron nitride substrate, with interactions having a secondary role9. We demonstrate that strong electron–electron interactions alone can produce not only the previously observed phase, but also other unexpected Chern insulating phases in MATBG. The full sequence of phases that we observe can be understood by postulating that strong correlations favour breaking time-reversal symmetry to form Chern insulators that are stabilized by weak magnetic fields. Our findings illustrate that many-body correlations can create topological phases in moiré systems beyond those anticipated from weakly interacting models. Strong electron–electron interactions in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene can fundamentally change the topology of the system's flat bands, producing a hierarchy of strongly correlated topological insulators in modest magnetic fields.

Abstract:We derive the exact insulator ground states of the projected Hamiltonian of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) flat bands with Coulomb interactions in various limits, and study the perturbations away from these limits. We define the (first) chiral limit where the AA stacking hopping is zero, and a flat limit with exactly flat bands. In the chiral-flat limit, the TBG Hamiltonian has a U(4) ×U (4) symmetry, and we find that the exact ground states at integer filling −4≤ν≤4 relative to charge neutrality are Chern insulators of Chern numbers νC=4−|ν|,2−|ν|,⋯,|ν|−4 , all of which are degenerate. This confirms recent experiments where Chern insulators are found to be competitive low-energy states of TBG. When the chiral-flat limit is reduced to the nonchiral-flat limit which has a U(4) symmetry, we find ν=0,±2 has exact ground states of Chern number 0, while ν=±1,±3 has perturbative ground states of Chern number νC=±1 , which are U(4) ferromagnetic. In the chiral-nonflat limit with a different U(4) symmetry, different Chern number states are degenerate up to second-order perturbations. In the realistic nonchiral-nonflat case, we find that the perturbative insulator states with Chern number νC=0 ( 0<|νC|<4−|ν| ) at integer fillings ν are fully (partially) intervalley coherent, while the insulator states with Chern number |νC|=4−|ν| are valley polarized. However, for 0<|νC|≤4−|ν| , the fully intervalley coherent states are highly competitive (0.005 meV/electron higher). At nonzero magnetic field |B|>0 , a first-order phase transition for ν=±1,±2 from Chern number νC=sgn(νB)(2−|ν|) to νC=sgn(νB)(4−|ν|) is expected, which agrees with recent experimental observations. Theory of correlated Chern insulators in twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract:Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene is the best studied physical platform featuring moire potential induced narrow bands with non-trivial topology and strong electronic correlations. Despite their significance, the Chern insulating states observed at a finite magnetic field -- and extrapolating to a band filling, $s$, at zero field -- remain poorly understood. Unraveling their nature is among the most important open problems in the province of moiré materials. Here we present the first comprehensive study of interacting electrons in finite magnetic field while varying the electron density, twist angle and heterostrain. Within a panoply of correlated Chern phases emerging at a range of twist angles, we uncover a unified description for the ubiquitous sequence of states with the Chern number $t$ for $(s,t)=\pm (0,4), \pm(1,3),\pm(2,2)$ and $\pm(3,1)$. We also find correlated Chern insulators at unconventional sequences with $s+t\neq \pm 4$, as well as with fractional $s$, and elucidate their nature.

Particle-hole asymmetric phases in doped twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract:Despite much theoretical work, developing a comprehensive ab initio model for twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has proven challenging due to the inherent trade-off between accurately describing the band structure and incorporating the interactions within the Hamiltonian, particularly given the topological obstruction -- so-called fragile topology -- to the description of the model in terms of localized symmetric Wannier functions within the flat band manifold. Here, we circumvent this obstruction by using an extended 8-orbital model, for which localized Wannier orbitals have been formulated by Carr et al. [1]. We constructed an extended multi-orbital Hubbard model, and performed Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations to explore its phase diagram across commensurate fillings from -3 to 3. We found several nearly-degenerate insulating states at charge neutrality, all of which exhibit orbital orders. Crucially, TBG near magic angle is known to be particle-hole asymmetric, which is naturally captured by the single-particle band structure of our model and is reflected in the distinction between the symmetry broken states obtained at electron and hole dopings away from the charge neutral point. At filling -1 and +2, quantum anomalous hall states are obtained, while for the rest of the integer fillings away from charge neutrality, we found the system to realize metallic states with various orbital, valley and spin orderings. We also observed that most of the Hartree--Fock ground states exhibit a generalized valley Hund's-like rule, resulting in valley polarization. Importantly, we show that the incorporation of the intra-valley and inter-valley exchange interactions is crucial to properly stabilize the ordered symmetry-broken states. In agreement with experiments, we find significant particle-hole asymmetry, which underscores the importance of using particle-hole asymmetric models.

Abstract:Twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) has emerged as an especially rich platform for studying strongly correlated and topological states of matter. The material features moiré bands that can be continuously deformed by both perpendicular displacement field and twist angle. Here, we construct a phase diagram representing of the correlated and topological states as a function of these parameters, based on measurements on over a dozen tDBG devices encompassing the two distinct stacking configurations in which the constituent Bernal bilayer graphene sheets are rotated either slightly away from 0° or 60°. We find a hierarchy of symmetry-broken states that emerge sequentially as the twist angle approaches an apparent optimal value of $\theta \approx$ 1.34°. Among them, we discover a sequence of symmetry-broken Chern insulator (SBCI) states that arise only within a narrow range of twist angles ($\approx$ 1.33° to 1.39°). We observe an associated anomalous Hall effect at zero field in all samples supporting SBCI states, indicating spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and possible moiré unit cell enlargement at zero magnetic field.

Abstract:The ground states of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at chiral and flat-band limit with integer fillings are known from exact solutions, while their dynamical and thermodynamical properties are revealed by unbiased quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. However, to elucidate experimental observations of correlated metallic, insulating and superconducting states and their transitions, investigations on realistic, or non-chiral cases are vital. Here we employ momentum-space QMC method to investigate the evolution of correlated states in magic-angle TBG away from chiral limit at charge neutrality with polarized spin/valley, which approximates to an experimental case with filling factor $\nu=-3$. We find that the ground state evolves from quantum anomalous Hall insulator into an intriguing correlated semimetallic state possessing heavy-fermion features as AA hopping strength reaches experimental values. Such a state resembles the recently proposed heavy-fermion representations with localized electrons residing at AA stacking regions and delocalized electrons itinerating via AB/BA stacking regions. The spectral signatures of the localized and itinerant electrons in the heavy-fermion semimetal phase are revealed, with the connection to experimental results being discussed.

The magnetic $Z_2$ topological insulator on the AA-stacked bilayer graphene

Abstract:The properties displayed by graphene at van Hove singularities (VHS) have caught significant attention in recent years. The emergence of exotic quantum states at these singularities prompts investigations on their evolution within the realm of multilayer stacking structures. In our research, we delve into the study of a repulsive Hubbard model focusing on the AA-stacked bilayer graphene at VHS. Within the system's ground state, each of the top and bottom layers hosts a set of spin-density waves (SDWs). These SDWs each takes on three mutually perpendicular spin polarization directions. Importantly, there is noteworthy feature that their spin polarization directions in the two layers exist as elegant embodiments of antiferromagnetic arrangement, persvading the structure with a striking pattern. Referred to in prior research as the chiral SDWs, this intralayer density wave structure confers the system the characteristics of a Chern topological insulator. However, what is particularly fascinating is the pure divergence of the bilayer structure's topological traits when compared to its monolayer counterpart. The system exhibits a profound symmetry known as $Z_2$, preserving its invariance under the combined operations of time-reversal and interlayer exchange. Consequentely, the system's ground state manifests a seemingly trivial Chern number, yet harbors a profound and intricate nontrivial $Z_2$ topological invariant. These remarkable observations align our findings with the conceptual framework of the quantum spin Hall effect.

Shaping the topology of twisted bilayer graphene via time-reversal symmetry breaking

Abstract:Symmetry breaking is an effective tool for tuning the transport and topological properties of 2D layered materials. Among these materials, twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) has emerged as a promising platform for new physics, characterized by a rich interplay between topological features and strongly correlated electronic behavior. In this study, we utilize time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) to manipulate the topological properties of TBG. By varying the strength of TRSB, we discover a topological phase transition between a topological insulating phase, which exhibits a pair of flat bands with opposite Chern numbers, and a novel insulating state where the Chern number, but not the Berry curvature, of the flat bands vanishes. We demonstrate that this topological transition is mediated by a gap closing at the $\Gamma$ point, and we construct a three-dimensional phase diagram as a function of the twisting angle, the symmetry-breaking parameter, and the mismatch coupling between AA and AB stacking regions. Finally, we show that this novel electronic phase can be identified in the lab by measuring, as a function of the Fermi energy, its non-quantized anomalous Hall conductivity that is induced by the Berry dipole density of the lowest flat bands.

Gate-tunable topological phases in superlattice modulated bilayer graphene

Abstract:Superlattice potential modulation can produce flat minibands in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene. In this work we study how band topology and interaction-induced symmetry-broken phases in this system are controlled by tuning the displacement field and the shape and strength of the superlattice potential. We use an analytic perturbative analysis to demonstrate that topological flat bands are favored by a honeycomb-lattice-shaped potential, and numerics to show that the robustness of topological bands depends on both the displacement field strength and the periodicity of the superlattice potential. At integer fillings of the topological flat bands, the strength of the displacement field and the superlattice potential tune phase transitions between quantum anomalous Hall insulator, trivial insulator, and metallic states. We present mean-field phase diagrams in a gate voltage parameter space at filling factor $\nu=1$, and discuss the prospects of realizing quantum anomalous Hall insulators and fractional Chern insulators when the superlattice potential modulation is produced by dielectric patterning or adjacent moiré materials.

Kondo lattice model in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene

Abstract:We systematically study emergent Kondo lattice models from magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene using the topological heavy fermion representation. At the commensurate fillings, we demonstrate a series of symmetric strongly correlated metallic states driven by the hybridization between a triangular lattice of $SU(8)$ local moments and delocalized fermions. In particular, a (fragile) topological Dirac Kondo semimetal can be realized, providing a potential explanation for the symmetry-preserving correlated state at $\nu=0$. We further investigate the stability of the Dirac Kondo semimetal by constructing a quantum phase diagram showing the interplay between Kondo hybridization and magnetic correlation. The destruction of Kondo hybridization suggests that the magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene may be on the verge of a solid-state quantum simulator for novel magnetic orders on a triangular lattice. Experimental implications are also discussed.

Abstract:Studies on two-dimensional electron systems in a strong magnetic field first revealed the quantum Hall (QH) effect, a topological state of matter featuring a finite Chern number (C) and chiral edge states. Haldane later theorized that Chern insulators with integer QH effects could appear in lattice models with complex hopping parameters even at zero magnetic field. The ABC-trilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (TLG/hBN) moiré superlattice provides an attractive platform to explore Chern insulators because it features nearly flat moiré minibands with a valley-dependent electrically tunable Chern number. Here we report the experimental observation of a correlated Chern insulator in a TLG/hBN moiré superlattice. We show that reversing the direction of the applied vertical electric field switches TLG/hBN's moiré minibands between zero and finite Chern numbers, as revealed by dramatic changes in magneto-transport behavior. For topological hole minibands tuned to have a finite Chern number, we focus on 1/4 filling, corresponding to one hole per moiré unit cell. The Hall resistance is well quantized at h/2e2, i.e. C = 2, for |B| > 0.4 T. The correlated Chern insulator is ferromagnetic, exhibiting significant magnetic hysteresis and a large anomalous Hall signal at zero magnetic field. Our discovery of a C = 2 Chern insulator at zero magnetic field should open up exciting opportunities for discovering novel correlated topological states, possibly with novel topological excitations, in nearly flat and topologically nontrivial moiré minibands.
