Abstract:Discovery of a remnant habitable environment by the Mars Science Laboratory in the sedimentary record of Gale Crater has reinvigorated the search for evidence of martian life. In this study, we used a simulated martian mudstone material, based on data from Gale Crater, that was inoculated and cultured over several months and then dried and pressed. The simulated mudstone was analysed with a range of techniques to investigate the detectability of biosignatures. Cell counting and DNA extraction showed a diverse but low biomass microbial community that was highly dispersed. Pellets were analysed with bulk Elemental Analysis - Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (EA-IRMS), high-resolution Laser-ablation Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (LIMS), Raman spectroscopy and Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy, which are all techniques of relevance to current and future space missions. Bulk analytical techniques were unable to differentiate between inoculated samples and abiotic controls, despite total levels of organic carbon comparable with that of the martian surface. Raman spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and LIMS, which are high sensitivity techniques that provide chemical information at high spatial resolution, retrieved presumptive biosignatures but these remained ambiguous and the sedimentary matrix presented challenges for all techniques. This suggests challenges for detecting definitive evidence for life, both in the simulated lacustrine environment via standard microbiological techniques and in the simulated mudstone via analytical techniques with relevance to robotic missions. Our study suggests that multiple co-incident high-sensitivity techniques that can scan the same micrometre-scale spots are required to unambiguously detect biosignatures, but the spatial coverage of these techniques needs to be high enough not to miss individual cellular-scale structures in the matrix.
CONVOLUTIONAL NEURAL NETWORK IMAGE CLASSIFICATION OF MARS-ANALOG TERRAIN: PRELIMINARY RESULTS AND IMPLICATIONS FOR THE SEARCH FOR LIFE ON MARS.

Abstract:Introduction: Habitats with a taphonomic window are high priority targets for astrobiology missions to Mars [1]. However, if life existed on Mars it did not interact with its physical environment in a way that has been obvious to identify from orbit. Studying terrestrial Mars analogs can inform us of the types of features that serve as habitats with a taphonomic window on Earth, and by extension the types of features that should be sought on Mars. But what spatial resolutions are necessary to positively identify such targets? To address the problem of establishing thresholds of identification in spatial resolution, we are assessing the ability of a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to perform semantic segmentation (classify each pixel) on images of the astrobiologically-relevant Mars-analog environment, Salar de Pajonales (SdP), in Chile (Fig. 1A). Our aim is to discover the resolutions at which the habitats at SdP are no longer identifiable by the CNN to understand if the same types of features could be identified in salt-encrusted basins on Mars. CNNs excel at many tasks related to image analysis, including image classification [2], with modern CNNs capable of outperforming human analysts [2, 3]. Our investigation requires a consistent analysis of the same terrain over many ground sampling distances (GSDs). A single human analyst would become biased after the first classification task, and many human analysts would vary in their ability to classify a scene. Therefore, a CNN is a natural choice to tackle this problem. Here we present initial results of the semantic segmentation of our highest resolution (3 cm/pixel) scene of SdP. In future work, we will evaluate the CNN performance at progressively lower GSDs to establish thresholds of identification for habitats at SdP. Geologic Background and Relevance to Mars: Salar de Pajonales (SdP) is a salt-encrusted basin in the Chilean Altiplano (25°08'29"S, 68°46'20"W, 3547m, Fig. 1A) [4]. Its polyextreme characteristics make it a suitable analog for a post-Noachian martian climate [5]. Our study site within SdP is a gypsum-dominated area that notably hosts ridges and tumuli [6] that serve as endolithic habitats [5], and a “patterned ground” unit that represents a biological soil crust [5] (Table 1, Fig. 1B). Abstract:Past environments on Mars contained abundant water, suggesting certain regions may have been conducive to life as we know it and implying the potential for microbial inhabitants. Gale and Jezero craters, home of the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers, hosted ancient lakes that experienced periods of active hydrologic cycling and prolonged drying intervals. Exploration of these basins (and future operations on Mars) will benefit from detailed characterizations of analogous environments on Earth, where life detection strategies at various spatial scales (i.e., rover to orbiter) can be tested and validated. Investigations of terrestrial analogs are critical for understanding (1) how microorganisms generate chemical biosignatures in environments characterized by multiple extreme conditions; (2) the impact of environmental conditions and mineralogy on biosignature preservation; and (3) what technologies and techniques are needed to detect biosignatures remotely or in situ . Here, we survey five terrestrial sites analogous to climate conditions proposed for Late Noachian to Early Hesperian Mars, when craters are thought to have hosted active lakes. We review the geologic setting, environmental conditions, microbial habitability, extant microbial communities, and preserved biomarkers at each analog and discuss their relevance to the search for signs of life in Martian craters with in situ and remote instrumentation. The analogs range from active to desiccated lake systems, temperate to hyper-arid climates, and have acidic to neutral-pH and hypo- to hyper-saline waters. Each analog hosts microorganisms adapted to multiple extremes (polyextremophiles), including aspects of water availability (i.e., surface waters versus shallow subsurface water versus groundwater) and physiochemistry (e.g., water activity, salinity, temperature, alkalinity, pH, and redox potential) that can form macrobiological features such as microbial mats. Comparing the expected achievable spatial resolution of several key Mars instruments to the spatial extent of macrobiological features at each analog reveals that most features are unlikely to be resolved from orbit and require rover-scale instruments for detection. We recommend that future studies at these analogs use multi-scale remote sensing surveys to determine thresholds for detecting macrobiological features and map how patterns in mineralogy or physical characteristics of environments correlate to modern-day microbial communities or preserved biomarkers. It will also be critical to determine how the characteristics of macrobiological features, such as areal extent, percent cover, thickness, pigments, etc., impact detectability thresholds. These findings can provide vital information on potential topographic or spectroscopic signatures of life, and at what scales they are detectable. This research is critical to guide sample collection locations within craters like Jezero, and for selecting landing sites for future missions in evaporative Martian basins and other rocky bodies.
Multi-Technique Characterization of 3.45 Ga Microfossils on Earth: A Key Approach to Detect Possible Traces of Life in Returned Samples from Mars

Abstract:The NASA Mars 2020 Perseverance rover is actively exploring Jezero crater to conduct analyses on igneous and sedimentary rock targets from outcrops located on the crater floor (Máaz and Séítah formations) and from the delta deposits, respectively. The rock samples collected during this mission will be recovered during the Mars Sample Return mission, which plans to bring samples back to Earth in the 2030s to conduct in-depth studies using sophisticated laboratory instrumentation. Some of these samples may contain traces of ancient martian life that may be particularly difficult to detect and characterize because of their morphological simplicity and subtle biogeochemical expressions. Using the volcanic sediments of the 3.45 Ga Kitty's Gap Chert (Pilbara, Australia), containing putative early life forms (chemolithotrophs) and considered as astrobiological analogues for potential early Mars organisms, we document the steps required to demonstrate the syngenicity and biogenicity of such biosignatures using multiple complementary analytical techniques to provide information at different scales of observation. These include sedimentological, petrological, mineralogical, and geochemical analyses to demonstrate macro- to microscale habitability. New approaches, some unavailable at the time of the original description of these features, are used to verify the syngenicity and biogenicity of the purported fossil chemolithotrophs. The combination of elemental (proton-induced X-ray emission spectrometry) and molecular (deep-ultraviolet and Fourier transform infrared) analyses of rock slabs, thin sections, and focused ion beam sections reveals that the carbonaceous matter present in the samples is enriched in trace metals ( e.g. , V, Cr, Fe, Co) and is associated with aromatic and aliphatic molecules, which strongly support its biological origin. Transmission electron microscopy observations of the carbonaceous matter documented an amorphous nanostructure interpreted to correspond to the degraded remains of microorganisms and their by-products (extracellular polymeric substances, filaments...). Nevertheless, a small fraction of carbonaceous particles has signatures that are more metamorphosed. They probably represent either reworked detrital biological or abiotic fragments of mantle origin. This study serves as an example of the analytical protocol that would be needed to optimize the detection of fossil traces of life in martian rocks.

Abstract:This paper empirically analyzes the impact of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act on the relation between measures of corporate governance and a firm’s dividend policy in the U.S. equity market. Using the IRRC database, we find that there is a statistically significant relation between governance measures and a firm’s dividend policy in the years prior to the introduction of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. However, following Sarbanes-Oxley, the relation between a firm’s governance structure and dividend policy changes. In particular, shareholders’ rights and the proportion of outside directors are no longer significant in explaining a firm’s dividend policy.

Abstract:With state-of-the-art imaging and analytical tools onboard the NASA Perseverance Rover Mission, geological information for remote astrobiological analysis is readily available and more widespread than ever. For analysis of such data, there is a need for automated, remote assessment tools, capable of translational and scalable research. To search for evidence of life in the universe, one of the goals of astrobiological research, we must first recognize robust indicators of life on Earth. One method is the study of Earth's early fossil record, dominated by simple organisms similar to that predicted to have existed on Mars - if life ever did develop. We identify a potential morphological biosignature, known as double-rippled bedforms (DRBs), from the Ediacaran Member (Rawnsley Quartzite, 550–555 Ma) of South Australia. We utilize these DRBs to develop a new tool for astrobiological investigation via an improved end-to-end remote, automated biosignature assessment tool, Scene-aware Perception Automation using Composite Embedding for Segmentation (SPACESeg2.0). The proposed tool accurately detects and quantitatively characterizes DRBs in imagery from varied fields-of-view, with practical artifact-ridden data, even when the DRBs constitute less than 1% of the total image. We establish the efficacy of SPACESeg2.0 in detecting desired structures compared with other deep-learning techniques.

Methods and decision making on a Mars rover for identification of fossils

Abstract:A system for automated fusion and interpretation of image data from multiple sensors, including multispectral data from an imaging spectrometer is being developed. Classical artificial intelligence techniques and artificial neural networks are employed to make real time decision based on current input and known scientific goals. Emphasis is placed on identifying minerals which could indicate past life activity or an environment supportive of life. Multispectral data can be used for geological analysis because different minerals have characteristic spectral reflectance in the visible and near infrared range. Classification of each spectrum into a broad class, based on overall spectral shape and locations of absorption bands is possible in real time using artificial neural networks. The goal of the system is twofold: multisensor and multispectral data must be interpreted in real time so that potentially interesting sites can be flagged and investigated in more detail while the rover is near those sites; and the sensed data must be reduced to the most compact form possible without loss of crucial information. Autonomous decision making will allow a rover to achieve maximum scientific benefit from a mission. Both a classical rule based approach and a decision neural network for making real time choices are being considered. Neural nets may work well for adaptive decision making. A neural net can be trained to work in two steps. First, the actual input state is mapped to the closest of a number of memorized states. After weighing the importance of various input parameters, the net produces an output decision based on the matched memory state. Real time, autonomous image data analysis and decision making capabilities are required for achieving maximum scientific benefit from a rover mission. Abstract:A hierarchical Bayesian classifier is trained at pixel scale with spectral data from the CRISM (Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars) imagery. Its utility in detecting rare phases is demonstrated with new geologic discoveries near the Mars-2020 rover landing site. Akaganeite is found in sediments on the Jezero crater floor and in fluvial deposits at NE Syrtis. Jarosite and silica are found on the Jezero crater floor while chlorite-smectite and Al phyllosilicates are found in the Jezero crater walls. These detections point to a multi-stage, multi-chemistry history of water in Jezero crater and the surrounding region and provide new information for guiding the Mars-2020 rover's landed exploration. In particular, the akaganeite, silica, and jarosite in the floor deposits suggest either a later episode of salty, Fe-rich waters that post-date Jezero delta or groundwater alteration of portions of the Jezero sedimentary sequence.

Abstract:The search for organic matter on Mars is one of the major objectives of Mars exploration. However, limited detection of organic signals by Mars rovers to date demands further investigation on this topic. The Curiosity rover recently discovered numerous nodules in Gale Crater on Mars. These nodules have been considered to precipitate in the neutral-to-alkaline and saline diagenetic fluids and could be beneficial for organic preservation. Here, we examine this possibility by studying the carbonate nodules in the western Qaidam Basin, NW China, one of the terrestrial analog sites for Mars. Fourier transform infrared spectra of the carbonate nodules reveal that the aliphatic and aromatic molecules can be readily preserved inside nodules in Mars-like environments. The chain-branching index of the Qaidam nodules suggests that the diagenetic fluids where nodules precipitated were able to support diverse microbial communities that could vary with the water salinity. Findings of this study provide new perspectives on the astrobiological significance of nodules in Gale Crater and the further detection of organic matter on Mars.

Mapping "Brain Terrain" Regions on Mars using Deep Learning

Abstract:One of the main objectives of the Mars Exploration Program is to search for evidence of past or current life on the planet. To achieve this, Mars exploration has been focusing on regions that may have liquid or frozen water. A set of critical areas may have seen cycles of ice thawing in the relatively recent past in response to periodic changes in the obliquity of Mars. In this work, we use convolutional neural networks to detect surface regions containing "Brain Coral" terrain, a landform on Mars whose similarity in morphology and scale to sorted stone circles on Earth suggests that it may have formed as a consequence of freeze/thaw cycles. We use large images (~100-1000 megapixels) from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to search for these landforms at resolutions close to a few tens of centimeters per pixel (~25--50 cm). Over 52,000 images (~28 TB) were searched (~5% of the Martian surface) where we found detections in over 200 images. To expedite the processing we leverage a classifier network (prior to segmentation) in the Fourier domain that can take advantage of JPEG compression by leveraging blocks of coefficients from a discrete cosine transform in lieu of decoding the entire image at the full spatial resolution. The hybrid pipeline approach maintains ~93% accuracy while cutting down on ~95% of the total processing time compared to running the segmentation network at the full resolution on every image. The timely processing of big data sets helps inform mission operations, geologic surveys to prioritize candidate landing sites, avoid hazardous areas, or map the spatial extent of certain terrain. The segmentation masks and source code are available on Github for the community to explore and build upon.

Abstract:The presence and distribution of preserved organic matter on the surface of Mars can provide key information about the Martian carbon cycle and the potential of the planet to host life throughout its history. Several types of organic molecules have been previously detected in Martian meteorites 1 and at Gale crater, Mars 2,3,4 . Evaluating the diversity and detectability of organic matter elsewhere on Mars is important for understanding the extent and diversity of Martian surface processes and the potential availability of carbon sources 1,5,6 . Here we report the detection of Raman and fluorescence spectra consistent with several species of aromatic organic molecules in the Máaz and Séítah formations within the Crater Floor sequences of Jezero crater, Mars. We report specific fluorescence-mineral associations consistent with many classes of organic molecules occurring in different spatial patterns within these compositionally distinct formations, potentially indicating different fates of carbon across environments. Our findings suggest there may be a diversity of aromatic molecules prevalent on the Martian surface, and these materials persist despite exposure to surface conditions. These potential organic molecules are largely found within minerals linked to aqueous processes, indicating that these processes may have had a key role in organic synthesis, transport or preservation.

Abstract:Abstract Diatom communities preserved in sediment samples are valuable indicators for understanding the past and present dynamics of phytoplankton communities, and their response to environmental changes. These studies are traditionally achieved by counting methods using optical microscopy, a time‐consuming process that requires taxonomic expertise. With the advent of automated image acquisition workflows, large image data sets can now be acquired, but require efficient preprocessing methods. Detecting diatom frustules on microscope images is a challenge due to their low relief, diverse shapes, and tendency to aggregate, which prevent the use of traditional thresholding techniques. Deep learning algorithms have the potential to resolve these challenges, more particularly for the task of object detection. Here we explore the use of a Faster Region‐based Convolutional Neural Network model to detect siliceous biominerals, including diatoms, in microscope images of a sediment trap series from the Mediterranean Sea. Our workflow demonstrates promising results, achieving a precision score of 0.72 and a recall score of 0.74 when applied to a test set of Mediterranean diatom images. Our model performance decreases when used to detect fragments of these microfossils; it also decreases when particles are aggregated or when images are out of focus. Microfossil detection remains high when the model is used on a microscope image set of sediments from a different oceanic basin, demonstrating its potential for application in a wide range of contemporary and paleoenvironmental studies. This automated method provides a valuable tool for analyzing complex samples, particularly for rare species under‐represented in training data sets.

Abstract:Mineral mapping of a planetary surface is of prime importance to better understanding its composition and constraining its geologic evolution. Visible-to-Near-Infrared (VNIR) hyperspectral remote sensing is the primary tool to detect the composition of the martian surface at high spatial resolution. However, it is not straightforward to validate the mapping results since mineralogical groundtruth is typically unavailable. Furthermore, determining whether common approaches used to decode terrestrial VNIR data are applicable to Mars requires rigorous evaluation. In this work, we collected a suite of laboratory hyperspectral images with groundtruth, consisting of binary mixtures of Mars Global Simulant (MGS-1) and various hydrous minerals. The spectral effects of mixing MGS-1 with hydrous minerals were analyzed through conventional spectral parameters. It is observed that MGS-1 substantially reduces the spectral contrast of hydrous minerals. We then conducted a systematic comparison of seven benchmark target detection algorithms on the laboratory datasets, including Constrained Energy Minimization, Adaptive Coherence Estimator, Matched filter, Hierarchical Constrained Energy Minimization, Sparse Representation for Target Detection, Joint Sparse Representation and Multi-task Learning method, and Multi-task Joint Sparse and low-rank Representation (MTJSLR) method. Extensive experiments demonstrate that MTJSLR outperforms other competitors in successfully detecting low modal abundance hydrous minerals. The detection limits for nontronite, montmorillonite, kaolinite, gypsum, and calcite are 2.5%, 2.5%, 1%, 5%, and 5%, respectively. Carbonates are more challenging to detect than phyllosilicates even at the same abundance, which could partially contribute to the relative paucity of observed carbonates on Mars relative to phyllosilicates.

Abstract:The search for ephemeral liquid water on Mars is an ongoing activity. After the recession of the seasonal polar ice cap on Mars, small water ice patches may be left behind in shady places due to the low thermal conductivity of the Martian surface and atmosphere. During late spring and early summer, these patches may be exposed to direct sunlight and warm up rapidly enough for the liquid phase to emerge. To see the spatial and temporal occurrence of such ice patches, optical images should be searched for and checked. Previously a manual image analysis was conducted on 110 images from the southern hemisphere, captured by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter space mission. Out of these, 37 images were identified with smaller ice patches, which were distinguishable by their brightness, colour and strong connection to local topographic shading. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is applied to find further images with potential water ice patches in the latitude band between -40° and -60°, where the seasonal retreat of the polar ice cap happens. Previously analysed HiRISE images were used to train the model, where each image was split into hundreds of pieces (chunks), expanding the training dataset to 6240 images. A test run conducted on 38 new HiRISE images indicates that the program can generally recognise small bright patches, however further training might be needed for more precise identification. This further training has been conducted now, incorporating the results of the previous test run. To retrain the model, 18646 chunks were analysed and 48 additional epochs were ran. In the end the model produced a 94% accuracy in recognising ice, 58% of these images showed small enough ice patches on them. The rest of the images was covered by too much ice or showed CO2 ice sublimation in some places.

Abstract:Siliceous hot spring deposits, or sinters, deposit from hot spring discharge at Earth's surface and are sites of exceptional preservation of biosignatures. Their macro‐ and micro‐textures are regarded as important evidence of past microbial activities in hydrothermal environments. However, biology mimics do occur, and bona fide microbial textures could be destroyed by subsequent diagenesis or other post‐depositional processes. Thus, it is paramount to narrow the search for prospective Martian silica‐rich deposits that may contain biosignatures from both orbital and rover‐based perspectives. This study investigates hydrothermal deposits in Chile, which are analogs of high‐silica deposits discovered in the Gusev crater on Mars, through remote sensing and laboratory analysis. Results indicate that compositional remote sensing based on multispectral data with a high spatial resolution of <4 m/pixel reflects various concentrations of silica, which assisted in identifying the direction of discharged hydrothermal flows from the vent to the apron. Micro‐infrared mapping of sinters from similar hydrothermal fields linked spectral features to specific textures revealed by scanning electron microscope and chemical compositions confirmed by electron microprobe analysis, indicating that sinters with no shift in their emissivity minimum in the thermal infrared range were more likely to preserve cellular structures. An instrument for collecting multispectral data with higher spatial resolution could aid in characterizing the geologic settings of potential hot springs on Mars. Locating emissivity minima in the infrared regions of silica that do not shift to a lower position would suggest the potential for well‐preserved microbial structures in Martian sinters, if life ever did exist there.

Automated detection of geological landforms on Mars using Convolutional Neural Networks

Abstract:The large volume of high-resolution images acquired by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has opened a new frontier for developing automated approaches to detecting landforms on the surface of Mars. However, most landform classifiers focus on crater detection, which represents only one of many geological landforms of scientific interest. In this work, we use Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) to detect both volcanic rootless cones and transverse aeolian ridges. Our system, named MarsNet, consists of five networks, each of which is trained to detect landforms of different sizes. We compare our detection algorithm with a widely used method for image recognition, Support Vector Machines (SVMs) using Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG) features. We show that ConvNets can detect a wide range of landforms and has better accuracy and recall in testing data than traditional classifiers based on SVMs.
