Abstract:A droplet of millimeter-to-centimeter scale can exhibit electrostatic levitation, and such levitated droplets can be used for the measurement of the surface tension of the liquids by observing the characteristic frequency of oscillatory deformation. In the present study, a simple mechanical model is proposed by considering a single mode of oscillation in the ellipsoidal deformation of a levitated rotating droplet. By measuring the oscillation frequency with respect to the rotational speed and oscillation amplitude, it is expected that the accuracy of the surface tension measurement could be improved. Using the proposed model, the dependences of the characteristic frequency of oscillatory deformation and the averaged aspect ratio are calculated with respect to the rotational angular velocity of a rotating droplet. These dependences are found to be consistent with the experimental observations.

Modelling of Electromagnetic Levitation - Consequences on Non-contact Physical Properties Measurements

Abstract:Electromagnetic levitation of electrically conductive droplets by alternating magnetic fields is a technique used to determine the physical properties of liquid metallic alloys such as surface tension, viscosity, heat capacity and thermal diffusivity/1/. To improve accuracy, it is mandatory to reduce electromagnetic stirring and shaping of the droplet, therefore experiments are conducted in microgravity. Properties are deduced from direct measurements of position or temperature using specific models. Our purpose is to check various assumptions on which those models are built by the use of adapted numerical codes. We first compare experimental and numerical results concerning the shape and mass centre oscillation frequencies of electromagnetically levitated Nickel droplets. Axisymmetric numerical model yields equilibrium shapes and positions of the droplets in a good agreement with experiment. Then, fluid flow effects on the measurement precision of surface tension and viscosity by comparing expecte and calculated properties values are charcterized. We determine critical values of initial droplet distortion or magnetic field intensity which can lead to an overestimate of the value of viscosity. We also calculate flow effects of heat capacity and thermal conductivity values.

Abstract:This study builds upon prior research by exploring droplet oscillation dynamics for surface tension determination using a drop-on-demand high-temperature droplet generator. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted to analyse frequency shifts over time, comparing two different materials with consistent results. The findings suggest potential for developing correction factors for oscillations with larger initial deformations. Additionally, frequency shifts relative to evolving aspect ratios of droplets starting with higher initial deformations were compared. Corrective measures can be applied, particularly beneficial for short-term measurements based on image analysis with minimal overall frequency shift. Slight asymmetry in oscillation with increasing aspect ratio could be accredited to droplet cross-sectional geometry or energy availability for returning prolate droplets to a spherical state. Experimental results indicated minimal frequency shift within a measurement duration of up to 40 ms, affirming the adequacy of using a fitted sine function without a time-dependent frequency term for overall frequency determination. A dimensionless criterion can be used to filter out unsuitable droplets. A temperature-dependent surface tension trend for AlCu10 alloy consistent with literature findings is introduced.

[Botulinum toxin for the treatment of pain syndromes].

Abstract:Although botulinum toxin (BoNT) is being used for therapeutic purposes for more than 20 years, the list of potential new indications continues to increase and includes various pain syndromes. The pain relief experienced by patients with dystonia and spasticity from intramuscular BoNT injections suggested that other chronic skeletal-muscles pain conditions may also benefit. BoNT inhibits the release of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction thereby reducing striatal muscle contractions and the proposed analgesic property was initially attributed to muscular relaxation. A specific analgesic BoNT effect is difficult to conclude from studies where pain is conditioned by other associated symptoms like dystonia, muscle contraction or spasticity. One alternative is to critically appraise clinical trials where BoNT was studied as the active intervention and pain evaluated as an outcome. From this analysis there is convincing evidence for the effectiveness of BoNT in the treatment of pain associated with cervical dystonia. For all other pain syndromes there have been relatively few, small sized, placebo-controlled studies (myofascial pain syndrome, chronic neck and low back pain, piriformis syndrome and fibromyalgia) and the results of these studies have been contradictory or non conclusive. To establish the analgesic properties of BoNT there is a need for appropriately designed, exploratory randomized controlled studies in well accepted human models of nociceptive or neuropathic pain. This does not exclude the subsequent need to conduct pragmatic trials to evaluate the effectiveness of BoNT in conditions where the improvement of pain or any associated clinical sign or symptom may be of clinical relevance.

Abstract:The oscillating drop method has been widely used for surface tension measurements of liquids at high temperatures such as molten metals. An experimental device that permits such measurements has been developed at IRDL. This device relies on aerodynamic levitation for the sample to be contactless and on acoustic excitation to make it oscillate at its resonance frequency, which is related to the surface tension with Rayleigh's equation. Beforehand, experimentally, a lateral gas jet blows and controls the rotation of the drop due to its unpredictable behavior. Moreover, the effect of drop mass, usually studied for electromagnetic levitation, remains unknown for aerodynamic levitation. To fill this knowledge gap, levitated drops of different masses were numerically modeled to observe the influence of gravity or additional oscillation modes. It resulted that for light mass drops, such as those used for our surface tension measurement, it is not significant. Finally, our results on iron, niobium, and 304L stainless steel have been compared with the literature. For pure metals, we observed a similar decreasing behavior versus temperature. For steel, results highlighted the impact of experimental parameters on the surface tension (length of experiments and composition of the atmosphere). These measurements thus provide original results that will be useful for the numerical modeling of innovative industrial processes such as additive manufacturing or welding.

Abstract:Single particle analysis is essential for a better understanding of the particle transformation process and to predict its environmental impact. In this study, we developed an aerosol optical tweezer (AOT) Raman spectroscopy system to investigate the phase state and morphology of suspended aerosol droplets in real time. The system comprises four modules: optical trapping, reaction, illumination and imaging, and detection. The optical trapping module utilizes a 532 nm laser and a 100 × oil immersion objective to stably trap aerosol droplets within 30 s. The reaction module allows us to adjust relative humidity (RH) and introduce reaction gases into the droplet levitation chamber, facilitating experiments to study liquid–liquid phase transitions. The illumination and imaging module employs a high-speed camera to monitor the trapped droplets, while the detector module records Raman scattering light. We trapped sodium chloride (NaCl) and 3-methyl glutaric acid (3-MGA) mixed droplets to examine RH-dependent morphology changes. Liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS) occurred when RH was decreased. Additionally, we introduced ozone and limonene/pinene to generate secondary organic aerosol (SOA) particles in situ, which collided with the trapped droplet and dissolved in it. To determine the trapped droplet's characteristics, we utilized an open-source program based on Mie theory to retrieve diameter and refractive index from the observed whispering gallery modes (WGMs) in Raman spectra. It is found that mixed droplets formed core–shell morphology when RH was decreased, and the RH dependence of the droplets' phase transitions generated by different SOA precursors varied. Our AOT system serves as an essential experimental platform for in situ assessment of morphology and phase state during dynamic atmospheric processes.
Contactless surface tension measurement of molten oxides using oscillating drop method in an aerodynamic levitator

Abstract:Aerodynamic levitation stands as a contactless method for thermophysical property measurement of molten oxides at high temperatures, offering the advantage of eliminating sample contamination and enabling surface tension measurement through the oscillating drop method. However, the presence of oscillation mode splitting results in an underestimation of surface tension. By improving levitation stability and optimizing the acoustic excitation method for the levitated drops, this study successfully eliminates oscillation mode splitting for the first time. The l = 2 resonance frequency is directly measured, which is used to calculate surface tension according to the Rayleigh equation. Taking Al2O3 as a representative of oxides, this study demonstrates the accurate surface tension measurement during the frequency scan process when oscillation mode splitting is absent. Additionally, combining damped oscillation analysis with the frequency scan reduces measurement uncertainty from 2.8 % to 1.5 %. Within the temperature range of 2336K-2923K, the surface tension of molten Al2O3 is determined to be γ = -(4.071 ± 2.688) × 10- 5 (T-2327)+(0.7465 ± 0.074) N/m. Underestimation of surface tension is prevented when the l = 2 resonance frequency is used for surface tension calculations. The frequency crossover method which is used for surface tension measurement is also found to be affected by oscillation mode splitting.

Abstract:Ultrasonic atomization has been studied and used in applications for decades, but a mechanistic understanding of droplet production does not exist at a quantitative level. Early work seemed to indicate that droplet size follows from the driving frequency according to Kelvin's equation. The underlying assumptions in this model do not hold at larger frequencies, and the model relies on a fitting parameter that has not been consistent across experimental studies. Additionally, modern experiments often indicate multi-modal droplet size distributions further complicating the physics. It is difficult to experimentally measure relevant quantities like capillary wavelength because of the time and length scales involved and the fact that the phenomenon occurs at a free liquid surface. We use a high speed digital holographic microscope, the only one of its kind in the world, to image the liquid surface—in full 3D and real time—fast enough to resolve capillary waves generated by 5–50 MHz ultrasound. We extract from this data the spectrum of capillary wavelengths and then compare these to droplet size distributions measured with laser diffraction particle sizing. Both thickness mode and surface acoustic wave lithium niobate transducers are included as well as a range of frequencies in each case. It is shown that droplet size does depend directly on capillary wavelength, but that capillary wavelength is not related to the driving frequency in a simple way.

Abstract:We investigate the effect of electrical charge on the normal mode frequencies of electrically-charged diamagnetically levitated water droplets with radii 4.5-7.5 mm using diamagnetic levitation. This technique allows us to levitate almost spherical droplets and therefore to directly compare the measured vibrational frequencies of the first seven modes of the charged droplet with theoretical values calculated by Lord Rayleigh, for which we find good agreement.

Dialysate to plasma solute concentration (D/P) versus peritoneal transport parameters in CAPD.

Abstract:The relationship between dialysate to plasma solute equilibration ratio (D/P) and diffusive (diffusive mass transport coefficients, KBD) as well as convective (sieving coefficient, S, and net ultrafiltration) transport characteristics were studied in clinically stable CAPD patients and in patients with loss of ultrafiltration capacity (UFC). Forty-one 6-h single-dwell studies with standard glucose-based dialysis fluids containing 1.36% (n = 9), 2.27% (n = 9), and 3.86% (n = 23) anhydrous glucose were carried out in 33 clinically stable CAPD patients. Eleven patients with loss of UFC were studied with 3.86% glucose solution. Intraperitoneal dialysate volumes were calculated from the dilution of the tracer (131I-albumin) with a correction applied for its elimination from the peritoneal cavity. KBD and S were estimated using the Pyle-Popovich-Moncrief model with aqueous plasma concentrations. A theoretical D/P curve was derived with and without taking convective transport and peritoneal reabsorption into account. The three different glucose solutions yielded D/P curves which were similar for urea and potassium. For creatinine a slower equilibration and for glucose and sodium a faster decrease in dialysate concentration were observed with more hypertonic solutions. In general, there was a strong correlation which was best at 240 min between D/P (for glucose dialysate/initial dialysate concentration, D/Do) and KBD for all solutes (except sodium), whereas the correlation between D/P and convective transport parameters was much weaker. KBD for creatinine (with 3.86% glucose solution) could be estimated (r = 0.98) from aqueous D/P using the experimental formula: creatinine KBD = -1.8 - ln (1 - D240/P)/0.1. Patients with loss of UFC due to increased diffusive transport (n = 8) could be discriminated from the clinically stable patients using KBD and D/P (or D/D0) for creatinine and glucose or D/P for sodium. However, patients with loss of UFC associated with increased peritoneal reabsorption (n = 2) could not be identified using these parameters. Theoretically derived D/P curves were in excellent agreement with measured D/P for 1.36% glucose solution and simulations were satisfactory also for the 2.27% and 3.86% solutions provided that the effect of convective transport was taken into account. The standardized peritoneal equilibration tests (PET) as proposed by Twardowski et al. [17] seems to be appropriately designed as regards duration of the dwell and the choice of glucose and creatinine as investigated solutes. Thus, PET can be recommended as a sensitive routine investigation for the monitoring of normal/abnormal peritoneal transport behaviour in peritoneal dialysis patients.
Observation of thermal acoustic modes of a droplet coupled to an optomechanical sensor

Abstract:The bulk acoustic modes of liquid droplets, well understood from a theoretical perspective, have rarely been observed experimentally. Here, we report the direct observation of acoustic vibrational modes in a picoliter-scale droplet, extending up to ~ 40 MHz. This was achieved by coupling the droplet to an ultra-sensitive optomechanical sensor, which operates in a thermal-noise limited regime and with a substantial contribution from acoustic noise in the ambient medium. The droplet vibrational modes manifest as Fano resonances in the thermal noise spectrum of the sensor. This is amongst the few reported observations of droplet acoustic modes, and of Fano interactions in a coupled mechanical oscillator system driven only by thermal Brownian motion.

Abstract:Acoustic levitation can provide significant benefits for many fundamental research questions. However, it is important to consider that the acoustic field influences the measurement environment. This work focuses on the dissolution of immobilised drops using acoustic levitation in liquid–liquid systems. Previous work demonstrated that the acoustic field of standing waves impacts mass transfer by affecting the spread of dissolved substances in the continuous phase in two distinct ways: (I) solutes may either pass through nodal planes of the standing waves or (II) not pass. The binary systems examined for case (I) are 1-hexanol–water and 1-butanol–water, and for case (II), n-butyl acetate–water and toluene–water. This work quantifies the intensification effect of acoustic levitation on dissolution for the two types of behaviour, by comparing them with reference measurements of mechanically attached dissolving drops. The system was designed to ensure minimal intensification. The minimum intensification of mass transfer for levitating drops in the used setup of case (I) was 25%, and for case (II), it was 65%, both increasing with decreasing surface-equivalent diameter. With this understanding, acoustic levitation can be used more accurately in the field of mass transfer studies.

Stereo Measurement of Internal Flow Structure in Volatile Droplets on the Acoustic Levitation

Abstract:This paper describes experimental investigation on the three-dimensional internal flow structures of the acoustic levitated volatile droplets by stereo PIV. The acoustic levitation is one of the effective techniques to levitate and manipulate droplets in air. In order to apply the acoustic levitation to various fields such as the material science, analytical chemistry, drug discovery and so on, it is essential to understand the flow structures and transport phenomena on the acoustically levitated droplet. Our observation shows the internal flow structure is changed with the increase of the saturated vapor pressure of the levitated droplets. In the case of decane, nonane, octane, heptane, hexane and pentane droplets, the rotational motion is generated in each droplet. In the case of ethanol and methanol droplets, there is the flow from the equator toward the center of the droplet in the horizontal plane. In addition, the two or four vortices are generated in the horizontal plane with the increase of the droplet diameter.

Abstract:The oscillation behavior of a droplet on a horizontally oscillating flat substrate was studied. We derived a formula to relate the resonance frequency and damping constant of the horizontal oscillation of the droplet to the physical properties of the liquid materials, which were examined experimentally. The resonance frequency and damping constant were expressed as functions of surface tension, droplet radius, contact angle, density, and viscosity. Furthermore, we observed the non-equilibrium phenomenon of the droplet through the adsorption of molecules from the surrounding gas phase onto the droplet surface. We demonstrated the time evolution of the surface tension of an ethanol aqueous solution, and the decrease in surface tension due to the evaporation of ethanol was detected using the newly developed system.

Investigating the Surface Tension of Steels using Electromagnetic Levitation, Part I: Iron-Nickel Alloys

Abstract:Accurate experimental thermophysical property data of liquid alloys describing the temperature dependent behaviour of the materials’ physical properties in the melt, among them surface tension, are crucial parameters for various applications in today's metalworking industry, e.g. for simulation of casting processes. However, common surface tension measurement techniques, that are usually contact-based, face the challenging characteristics of melts: high temperatures and chemical reactivity. Thus, a non-contact, container-less measurement technique like the oscillating drop (OD) method combined with electromagnetic levitation (EML) is favorable. Here, the liquid sample is levitated freely by applying a high-frequency electromagnetic field, only environed by an inert gas atmosphere. By means of the OD method, surface tension of the liquid sample can be related to its surface oscillations. Consequently, surface tension is determined by evaluating the surface oscillations' frequency spectrum that is generated from a time-series of images acquired by high-speed cameras and subsequent application of edgedetection algorithms to get the sample radius as a function of time. Temperature is simultaneously monitored by contact-less pyrometers. Recent investigations on the binary iron-nickel system to study the influence of the composition on surface tension showed a significant shift to lower surface tension values compared to literature data that are in general scarce for binary, ternary, and higher order alloy systems. Moreover, all samples showed a similar (low) surface tension, almost independent of the composition. To support our hypothesis that this phenomenon results from the "non-academic" purity of the sample material, comparison measurements were conducted at the electrostatic levitation (ESL) facility of the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). Those measurement results, together with data obtained from self-fabricated high-purity iron-nickel alloys will be presented and compared to results obtained from our EML measurements.

Atomisation of an acoustically levitated droplet: Experimental observations of a myriad of complex phenomenon

Abstract:We report the dynamics of a droplet levitated in a single-axis acoustic levitator. The deformation and atomization behavior of the droplet in the acoustic field exhibits a myriad of complex phenomena, in sequences of steps. These include the primary breakup of the droplet through stable levitation, deformation, sheet formation, and equatorial atomization, followed by secondary breakup which could be umbrella breakup, bag breakup, bubble breakup or multistage breakup depending on the initial size of the droplet. The visualization of the interfacial instabilities on the surface of the liquid sheet using both side and top-view imaging is presented. The primary breakup of the droplet precedes with a stable levitation of the droplet. The thinning of the sheet is caused by the differential acceleration induced by the greater pressure difference between the poles and the equator. As the sheet thickness reduces to the order of a few microns, Faraday waves develop at the thinnest region (preceding to rim) which causes the generation of tiny-sized droplets perpendicular to the sheet. The corresponding, hole formation results in a perforated sheet that causes the detachment of the annular rim which breaks due to Rayleigh Plateau (RP) instability. The radial ligaments generated in the sheet possibly due to Rayleigh Taylor (RT) instability break into droplets of different sizes. The secondary breakup exhibits We dependency and includes umbrella, bag, bubble, or multistage, ultimately resulting in complete atomization of the droplets. Both the primary and the secondary breakup of the droplet admit interfacial instabilities such as Faraday instability, Kelvin Helmholtz (KH) instability, RT instability, and RP instability and are well described with visual evidence.

Abstract:The ultimate isolation offered by levitation provides new opportunities for studying fundamental science and realizing ultra-sensitive floating sensors. Among different levitation schemes, diamagnetic levitation is attractive because it allows stable levitation at room temperature without a continuous power supply. While the dynamics of diamagnetically levitating objects in the linear regime are well studied, their nonlinear dynamics have received little attention. Here, we experimentally and theoretically study the nonlinear dynamic response of graphite resonators that levitate in permanent magnetic traps. By large amplitude actuation, we drive the resonators into nonlinear regime and measure their motion using laser Doppler interferometry. Unlike other magnetic levitation systems, here we observe a resonance frequency reduction with amplitude in a diamagnetic levitation system that we attribute to the softening effect of the magnetic force. We then analyze the asymmetric magnetic potential and construct a model that captures the experimental nonlinear dynamic behavior over a wide range of excitation forces. We also investigate the linearity of the damping forces on the levitating resonator, and show that although eddy current damping remains linear over a large range, gas damping opens a route for tuning nonlinear damping forces via the squeeze-film effect.

On evaporation dynamics of an acoustically levitated multicomponent droplet: evaporation-triggered phase transition and freezing

Abstract:Hypothesis: Multi-component droplet evaporation has received significant attention in recent years due to the broad range of applications such as material science, environmental monitoring, and pharmaceuticals. The selective evaporation induced by the different physicochemical properties of components is expected to influence the concentration distributions and the separation of mixtures, thereby leading to rich interfacial phenomena and phase interactions. Experiments: A ternary mixture system containing hexadecane, ethanol, and diethyl ether is investigated in this study. The diethyl ether exhibits both surfactant-like and co-solvent properties. Systematic experiments were performed using acoustic levitation technique to achieve a contact-less evaporation condition. The evaporation dynamics and temperature information are acquired in the experiments, using high-speed photography and infrared thermography technologies. Findings: Three distinct stages, namely, "Ouzo state", "Janus state", and "Encapsulating state", are identified for the evaporating ternary droplet in acoustic levitation. A self-sustaining periodic freezing & melting evaporation mode is reported. A theoretical model is developed to characterize the multi-stage evaporating behaviors. We demonstrate the capability to tune the evaporating behaviors by varying the initial droplet composition. This work provides a deeper understanding of the interfacial dynamics and phase transitions involved in multi-component droplets and proposes novel strategies for the design and control of droplet-based systems

Abstract:Droplets are very simple physical systems, whereby surface tension shapes liquids into ideal opto-mechanical devices. This has recently enabled low-viscosity liquid samples to serve as miniature acoustic resonators harnessing optical generation of bulk vibrations, capillaries, or surface waves. Uniquely, a simple room-temperature pendant droplet can be activated as a hypersound-laser emitter when illuminated by a free-space, low-power visible laser thanks to stimulated Brillouin scattering of optical and acoustic whispering-gallery modes. Here, we demonstrate continuous operation of a liquid polymer opto-mechanical resonator and characterize its quality factor and long-term frequency stability. Our results point to the feasibility of all-liquid micro-mechanical oscillators working in the 50-100 MHz range. The stimulated generation of high-quality surface waves on nanoliter droplets gives momentum to new optical schemes for characterization of material viscous-elastic properties, laboratory investigation of atmospheric phenomena, and mass sensing for direct analysis of biological fluids based on ultrasound-hypersound coherent generation and detection.
