Abstract:An electrospun nanofiber based on pullulan/chitin nanofibers (PCN) containing curcumin (CR) and anthocyanins (ATH) was developed using an electrospinning technique for active-intelligent food packaging. The results of scanning electron microscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that CR and ATH were successfully immobilized on the film-forming substrate based on PCN. The physical and chemical properties of nanofibers with no colorant, a single colorant, and double colorants were compared. The nanofiber containing ATH and CR (PCN/CR/ATH) had stronger antioxidant and antimicrobial activities than those of nanofibers containing CR (PCN/CR) or ATH (PCN/ATH). With respect to pH sensitivity, the color of the PCN/CR nanofibers did not change obviously, but the color of the PCN/ATH and PCN/CR/ATH nanofibers changed significantly with the change in pH. Furthermore, the PCN/CR/ATH nanofibers clearly changed color with the progressive spoilage of Plectorhynchus cinctus at room temperature. Therefore, the electrospun PCN/CR/ATH nanofiber have great application potential in active-intelligent food packaging.
Controllable Poly(L-lactic Acid) Soft Film with Respirability and Its Effect on Strawberry Preservation

Abstract:Gas permeability of films is essentially important for fresh products packaging. The flexible poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) was incorporated into the backbone of poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) to improve the flexibility and gas permeability of PLLA. The effects of different PCL middle blocks on the mechanical properties, oxygen (O2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor permeative properties of PLLA-PCL-PLLA triblock copolymers were evaluated, as well as its preservation effect on strawberry. The results showed that both the PCL and PLLA blocks kept amorphous state, and phase separation occurred in this immiscible system. The PCL play a role of gas passage, the CO2 permeability and CO2/O2 perm-selective ratio of neat PLLA film improved 2–3 times with the incorporation of higher molecular weight PCL. In addition, the PLLA-PCL-PLLA films presented a better toughness after large insertion of flexible PCL. Storing experiments showed that the low O2 and high CO2 atmosphere was established inside the package due to the good gas exchange performance of films. Moreover, strawberries still maintained the good sensory quality and Vitamin C contents on 24th day. Such biodegradable PLLA soft films are of great potential in fresh product packaging.

Abstract:A viable platform for food packaging applications has evolved in the form of protein nanofibers with material properties. Through this work, a simple, extensible process of protein for amyloid fibrils formation was proposed. The addition of polyphenol was expected to improve its synergistic antibacterial properties. The isolate protein of soy and whey (SPI and WPI) were selected as model proteins with an acid-heat treatment for 5 h to prepare the nanofibrils. Protein molecules eventually lost their intrinsic structure, which was also followed by aggregation and degeneration. Atomic force microscopy was used to investigate how proteins' spherical and linear shapes changed over time. As the protein unfolded and intermolecular aggregation occurred, circular dichroism (CD) demonstrated that the protein's secondary structure altered from a-helix to β-sheet and random coils. Furthermore, the fibrous protein films' mechanical characteristics were enhanced, particularly the elongation (E) of amyloid SPI films, which increased from 33.50 % to 100.57 %. Additionally, the films' water solubility (WS) and water vapor permeability (WVP) were both decreased. In order to create an antibacterial edible film, vanillin was also added to the fibrous protein solution as a bacteriostatic agent. The results showed that the fibrous protein film demonstrated a great bacteriostatic action and retained good shape. Here we present this simple and efficient method to obtain robust, flexible films, which not only provides a strategy for films with good mechanical properties but also extends their antibacterial by adding a bacteriostatic agent to further provide a new idea for food packaging.

Abstract:The application of the nanofiber film in the field of food preservation was an emerging research direction in recent years. With the functionalization of nanofibers, the quality and safety of food can be better guaranteed. In the present work, thymol as an antibacterial agent was encapsulated into poly(lactide- co-glycolide) to form core-shell nanofibers by coaxial electrospinning. With such a core-shell nanofiber film, thymol can be slowly released to headspace between food and the nanofiber film, inhibiting the growth of bacteria on the surface of food. The morphology and core-shell structure of nanofibers were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The antibacterial and fruit preservation abilities of the nanofiber film were tested on strawberries. Studies have shown that it can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeast and extend the shelf life of fruit. This novel antibacterial packaging material with excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and good sustained release performance would have a broad application prospect in the field of food preservation.

Abstract:In this work, the solution blow spinning (SBS) technique was used to rapidly fabricate the thymol (THY)/2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD) inclusion complexes loaded chitosan (CS)/polycaprolactone (PCL) nanofibrous films for fruit preservation and packaging. XRD results indicated that the THY/HPβCD inclusion complexes were successfully incorporated into the CS/PCL nanofibers. The nanofibrous films had an increase of average diameters of nanofibers from 243.84 nm to 560.55 nm, an enhancement of water vapor permeability, a decrease of the crystallinity, and a hydrophilic surface after the incorporation. FTIR and thermal analysis showed that the thermal stability was also improved due to the formation of hydrogen bonds between THY/HPβCD inclusion complexes and CS/PCL nanofibers. The developed films obtained a long-term continuous release of THY during 240 h, and had a good antifungal activity in vitro and in vivo. The above results indicated the promising prospects of SBS in developing antifungal nanofibrous films for postharvest fruit.

Abstract:ing the serologic surveys was normal during the state. Dark spots/patches seen on the specular microscopy after SLT has been recently reported by Ong et al. This change in the corneal endothelium may be due to oedema, subendothelial inflammatory cells or adjacent endothelial cell damage, and they are assumed to resolve after the resolution of the inflammation. The interesting fact about our case was that these changes occurred bilaterally after a unilateral SLT procedure. Bilateral effect after unilaterally applied SLT was also reported by Rhodes et al. The authors proposed a significant reduction in the intraocular pressure of the fellow untreated eye after uneventful unilateral SLT. Regina et al. have reported two cases with central corneal oedema and haze after SLT. They hypothesized that may be due to herpetic activation or residual alcohol on the goniolens or inflammatory response in the anterior chamber. Our patient has developed peripheral corneal haze and thinning, which might be due to inadvertent application of the laser, but this reaction was bilateral. Kim and Singh have introduced a case with severe iritis and choroidal effusion. Their case was also unilaterally affected in the treated eye. Our case developed severe bilateral anterior iritis and posterior synechia in the third week of SLT. It is interesting that it may be a period enough for immunization of the other eye because both eyes were affected at the same time. SLT is usually a safe procedure, but having signs of a past intra-ocular inflammation or pigment on the posterior surface of the cornea should also be considered as a relative contraindication for SLT therapy. The involvement of the untreated eye needs further investigation for any autoimmune triggering effect of SLT.
Grafting Hollow Covalent Organic Framework Nanoparticles with Thermal-Responsive Polymers for the Controlled Release of Preservatives

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) hold great potential in various applications because of their well-defined pore structures and morphologies. However, most COF materials demonstrate poor dispersibility in solvents that significantly limits their processing and applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of COF-based hollow nanoparticles (h-NPs) with good water dispersibility, high capacity, and thermal responsiveness to load essential oil molecules for longer-term preservation of fruits. Imine-based COF h-NPs possessing a pore width of 1.3 nm, inner/outer diameters of ∼150/239 nm, and high crystallinity were synthesized and grafted with water-soluble polymers such as polyethylene glycol or poly(<i>N</i>-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) with molecular weights of 1-3 kDa. The h-NP products with grafting densities of 0.6-2.1 nm<sup>-2</sup> can be well dispersed in water at room temperature. PNIPAM-grafted ones are temperature-responsive in that they can precipitate out from the dispersion at 40 °C and redisperse at 25 °C for at least 15 cycles. The h-NPs are used as nanocarriers to load essential oils such as hexanal and trans-2-hexenal with a high capacity of 1.1 g/g for fruit fresh-keeping, and the encapsulated preservatives can be released controllably at 25-40 °C as regulated by the grafted polymers. As a result, the storage time of cherry tomatoes can be prolonged by 4 days compared to the control run. Moreover, these h-NPs can be recycled and reused. Our work highlights the potential of COF nanomaterials grafting with stimuli-responsive polymers for controlled release application in various food preservation.

Abstract:The adherence of foodborne microorganisms threatens human health, necessitating the development of antibacterial food packaging films. In this study, the antibacterial agent carvacrol (CV), hindered by its high volatility and intense aromatic odor, was encapsulated within the photosensitive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) material PCN-224 (loading rate 50%). Subsequently, the microfluidic-blow-spinning (MBS) technique was employed for the rapid fabrication of CV@PCN-224/polycaprolactone (PCL)/chitosan (CS) nanofiber films. The incorporation of CV@PCN-224 NPs enhances the nanofiber films' thermal stability and mechanical properties and improves the water vapor permeability while maintaining the sustained release of CV over an extended period and good biocompatibility. Due to the simultaneous loading of antibacterial agent (CV) and photosensitive agent (PCN-224), the CV@PCN-224/PCL/CS films exhibited good synergistic antibacterial functionality, as demonstrated by effective inhibition against both E. coli and S. aureus. All results show the vast potential of the prepared nanofiber films in antibacterial food packaging.
Supercritical CO2 impregnation of PLA/PCL films with natural substances for bacterial growth control in food packaging

Abstract:Biodegradable polymers with antibacterial properties are highly desirable materials for active food packaging applications. Thymol, a dietary monoterpene phenol with a strong antibacterial activity is abundant in plants belonging to the genus Thymus. This study presents two approaches for supercritical CO2 impregnation of poly(lactic acid)(PLA)/poly(ε-caprolactone)(PCL) blended films to induce antibacterial properties of the material: (i) a batch impregnation process for loading pure thymol, and (ii) an integrated supercritical extraction-impregnation process for isolation of thyme extract and its incorporation into the films, operated in both batch or semi-continuous modes with supercritical solution circulation. The PCL content in films, impregnation time and CO2 flow regime were varied to maximize loading of the films with thymol or thyme extract with preserving films' structure and thermal stability. Representative film samples impregnated with thymol and thyme extract were tested against Gram (-) (Escherichia coli) and Gram(+) (Bacillus subtilis) model strains, by measuring their metabolic activity and re-cultivation after exposure to the films. The film containing thymol (35.8 wt%) showed a strong antibacterial activity leading to a total reduction of bacterial cell viability. Proposed processes enable fast, controlled and organic solvent-free fabrication of the PLA/PCL films containing natural antibacterial substances at moderately low temperature, with a compact structure and a good thermal stability, for potential use as active food packaging materials.

Abstract:Traditional active packaging materials are easily affected by the environment, resulting in their inability to release active substances in specified quantities at specified times and locations. In this study, MCM-41 was used as a thymol (THY) carrier and added to the potato starch (PS) matrix to design an intelligent release active packaging film based on storage microenvironment. MCM-41 encapsulation improved thermal stability of THY. THY–MCM-41 addition significantly improved the tensile strength ( TS , 7.18 MPa) of the film ( P < 0.05) and endowed the film excellent gas and water barrier protection. THY release was responsive to temperature and relative humidity (RH), and the First–order model better explained the THY release pattern (R 2 > 0.980). The THY-MCM-41/PS film exhibited long-term antibacterial effect during 10-day storage due to the sustained release of THY. Additionally, strawberries packaged in the THY–MCM-41/PS film exhibited the best sensory characteristics during 5-day storage (25 °C and 50 % RH). Overall, the present THY–MCM-41/PS film provides a novel alternative for the sustained release of active substances in order to achieve the excellent preservation of goods such as fruits and vegetables.

Abstract:Thymol is a phenol monoterpene with potential antifungal, antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Due to the low water solubility and high volatility of thymol, encapsulation serves as an effective tool during application. In the present study, cyclodextrin (CD)-based metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) were synthesized using α-CD, β-CD, and γ-CD as organic building blocks, and further complexed with thymol to produce three CD-MOF-THY inclusion complexes (ICs). The encapsulation content, release kinetics and fruit preservation effect of ICs were analyzed. Results showed that thymol was well embedded in γ-CD-MOFs, with the highest encapsulation content of 286.7 ± 8.4 mg/g. Release kinetics revealed that CD-MOFs exhibited a controlled release effect toward thymol for 35 days. The release kinetics of three ICs fit the Rigter–Peppas model well, with γ-CD-MOF-THY showing the lowest release rate constant of 2.85 at 50 °C, RH 75%. Moreover, γ-CD-MOF-THY exhibited a remarkable preservation performance on cherry tomatoes with the lowest decay index (18.75%) and weight loss (5.17%) after 15 days of storage, suggesting this material as a potential fresh-keeping material for fruit and vegetable preservation.

Abstract:To develop an optimized controlled-release system based on temperature-sensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAAm) nanofibers, we prepared three types of temperature-controlled preservative films. These films were composed of PNIPAAm, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polylactic acid (PLA), and lemon essential oil (LEO), and were fabricated using uniaxial, coaxial, and layered spinning techniques. The nanofiber films obtained by layered spinning exhibited a sandwich structure, demonstrating superior physical barrier properties, mechanical strength, and thermal resistance. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the hydrogen bonding interaction between the polylactic acid/lemon essential oil and PNIPAAm layers. LEO release tests showed that PNIPAAm functions as a temperature-responsive switch, suppressing LEO release below and promoting it above the critical solution temperature. After a sustained release at 40 °C for 5 days, the layered film maintained significant antibacterial activity, effectively extending the shelf life of blackberries to 4 days. Considering its physical barrier, mechanical, and sustained-release properties, the layered film derived from PNIPAAm shows great potential as an intelligent temperature-controlled cling film to effectively extend the freshness of perishable products.
Polycaprolactone/polyvinyl Pyrrolidone Nanofibers Developed by Solution Blow Spinning for Encapsulation of Chlorogenic Acid

Abstract:Study on the application of nanofibers in food active packaging has been a research hotspot in recent years. In this work, solution blow spinning (SBS) was applied to rapidly fabricate the polycaprolactone (PCL), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and PCL/PVP nanofibrous films to encapsulate chlorogenic acid (CGA). All films showed uniform and smooth nanofibers, and the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction proved the success of mixed spinning of PCL and PVP. With the increase of PVP content, the thermal stability of the PCL/PVP nanofibrous films improved. The PCL/PVP (weight ratio of 4:1) film possessed better mechanical properties than PCL and PVP films because of the stronger fiber-fiber interactions. The addition of PCL endowed the hydrophobic surfaces to the PCL/PVP films, and the PCL/PVP films had better water vapor barrier ability. The PCL/PVP (4:1) film exhibited the best long-term continuous release of CGA during 72 h. The PVP nanofibrous film exhibited no inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli due to the low encapsulation efficiency, but the PCL and PCL/PVP films exhibited good antimicrobial activity. The above results suggested that the nanofibrous films developed by SBS possess promising prospects in food packaging.

Abstract:The concept of this study is the replacement of previous fossil-based techniques for food packaging and food shelf-life extension, with novel more green processes and materials following the spirit of circular economy and the global trend for environmentally positive fingerprints. A novel adsorption process to produce thymol-halloysite nanohybrids is presented in this work. The high dispersion of this thymol-halloysite nanostructure in chitosan biopolymer is one of the goals of this study. The incorporation of this biodegradable matrix with poly-vinyl-alcohol produced a very promising food-packaging film. Mechanical, water-oxygen barrier, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties were measured. Transparency levels were also tested using a UV-vis instrument. Moreover, the developed films were tested in-vivo for the preservation and the extension of the shelf-life of kiwi fruits. In all cases, results indicated that the increased fraction of thymol from thyme oil significantly enhances the antimicrobial and antioxidant activity of the prepared chitosan-poly-vinyl- alcohol gel. The use of the halloysite increases the mechanical and water-oxygen barrier properties and leads to a control release process of thymol which extends the preservation and the shelf-life of kiwi fruits. Finally, the results indicated that the halloysite improves the properties of the chitosan/poly-vinyl-alcohol films, and the thymol makes them further advantageous.

Abstract:The research and development trend of food packaging is changing from synthetic polymers to eco-friendly materials such as polysaccharides and other hydrocolloids, aiming to solve the problem of pollution from plastic wastes. In this work, a biodegradable food packaging noted KC/PT film was constructed using konjac glucomannan (KGM)/carrageenan (CAR) composite as the matrix and peppermint essential oil (PO)/thymol (THY) with synergistic effect as the reinforcements. The KC/PT film showed great mechanical properties, UV-blocking activity, increased water contact angle and reduced water vapor permeability. Due to the synergistic effect between PO and THY, the KC/PT film showed excellent antioxidant performance and antibacterial behavior against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19115 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538. The antibacterial mechanism was further illustrated. The prepared KC/PT film, as a unique packaging film, not only successfully extended the shelf life of strawberry to 16 days at 4 °C, but also well expressed its environmental friendliness that it could nearly degrade after 47 days in natural soil conditions. Most importantly, the film exhibited good stability in terms of mechanical properties, antioxidant activity and antibacterial performances after 4 months storage. Therefore, the film the KC/PT film has great potentials in the field of food packaging area.

Abstract:The use of natural raw substances for food preservation could provide a great contribution to food waste reduction, circular economy enhancement, and green process application widening. Recent studies indicated that the use of porous materials as adsorbents for natural essential oils provided nanohybrids with excellent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Following this trend in this work, a thymol oil (TEO) rich SBA-15 nanohybrid was prepared and characterized physiochemically with various techniques. This TEO@SBA-15 nanohybrid, along with the pure SBA-15, was extruded with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) to develop novel active packaging films. Results indicated that TEO loading was higher than other porous materials reported recently, and the addition of both pure SBA-15 and TEO@SBA-15 to the LDPE increased the water/oxygen barrier. The film with the higher thyme-oil@SBA-15 nanohybrid content exhibited a slower release kinetic. The antioxidant activity of the final films ignited after 48 h, was in the range of 60–70%, and was almost constant for 7 days. Finally, all tests indicated a sufficient improvement by the addition of thyme-oil@SBA-15 nanohybrids in the pure LDPE matrix and the concentration of wt. 10% of such nanocarriers provided the optimum final LDPE/10TEO@SBE-15 active packaging film. This material could be a potential future product for active packaging applications.

Abstract:Novel multifunctional food packaging was developed by incorporating blood orange anthocyanins (BOA) and thyme oil (TO) emulsion into a chitosan-gum Arabic film matrix. The basic properties, pH/volatile acid sensi-tivity, and functional characteristics of the multifunctional films were investigated. BOA solution illustrated significant color variations (from pink to violet to yellow) under different pH environments. The incorporation of anthocyanin and emulsion enhanced the UV-vis blocking, which made the film block almost all UV light. Meanwhile, the multifunctional film had stronger mechanical strength and thermal stability, whose elongation at break reached 76.1%, and the maximum degradation temperature raised to 305 C. The incorporation of TO emulsion significantly enhanced the films' water resistance and made the water vapor barrier properties of the films reduce to 6.34 x 10-11 g/Pa & BULL;h & BULL;m. In addition, the multifunctional films exhibited noticeable changes of color in acid/alkaline environments within a short time interval, which could be easy to distinguish by naked eyes. The addition of emulsion made the multifunctional films slow-release of thyme oil, which significantly improved the antioxidant and dynamic antibacterial capacity of the films. Finally, the multifunctional films effectively extended the shelf-life of milk at 25 C and visually monitored freshness through the color changes in real-time. This knowledge provides a new perspective and idea to develop multifunctional food packaging materials with preservation and monitoring functions.
Encapsulation of Thymol in Ethyl Cellulose-Based Microspheres and Evaluation of Its Sustained Release for Food Applications

Abstract:Food waste is a global concern with enormous economic, environmental and social impacts that has contributed to active packaging evolution. However, incorporating bioactive substances into the packaging can deteriorate its physicochemical and mechanical characteristics. Thus, the objective of this work was to entrap the natural bioactive compound thymol into microparticles and apply them in the form of pads for the controlled release of bioactivity in food packaging material. The physicochemical characteristics and bioactivity of five different ethyl cellulose-based microparticles were evaluated. Increasing the amount of thymol in the formulation led to higher encapsulation efficiency. Encapsulation resulted in a substantial increase of >10–20 °C in the volatilization temperature of thymol, and the release of thymol occurred following a sustained profile, best described by the Higuchi release kinetic model. Increasing the polymer to thymol ratio in the microparticles resulted in higher thermal stability and a more gradual release profile. While all formulations demonstrated considerable inhibition of E. coli growth, the ones with the highest thymol content maintained their antimicrobial activity for at least one month of microparticle storage. Furthermore, the ability of the microparticles in retaining pH and titratable acidity of cherry tomatoes was evaluated, and it was confirmed that these characteristics were maintained during 21 days of storage.
