Abstract:An electrospun nanofiber based on pullulan/chitin nanofibers (PCN) containing curcumin (CR) and anthocyanins (ATH) was developed using an electrospinning technique for active-intelligent food packaging. The results of scanning electron microscopy and attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that CR and ATH were successfully immobilized on the film-forming substrate based on PCN. The physical and chemical properties of nanofibers with no colorant, a single colorant, and double colorants were compared. The nanofiber containing ATH and CR (PCN/CR/ATH) had stronger antioxidant and antimicrobial activities than those of nanofibers containing CR (PCN/CR) or ATH (PCN/ATH). With respect to pH sensitivity, the color of the PCN/CR nanofibers did not change obviously, but the color of the PCN/ATH and PCN/CR/ATH nanofibers changed significantly with the change in pH. Furthermore, the PCN/CR/ATH nanofibers clearly changed color with the progressive spoilage of Plectorhynchus cinctus at room temperature. Therefore, the electrospun PCN/CR/ATH nanofiber have great application potential in active-intelligent food packaging.

Abstract:A viable platform for food packaging applications has evolved in the form of protein nanofibers with material properties. Through this work, a simple, extensible process of protein for amyloid fibrils formation was proposed. The addition of polyphenol was expected to improve its synergistic antibacterial properties. The isolate protein of soy and whey (SPI and WPI) were selected as model proteins with an acid-heat treatment for 5 h to prepare the nanofibrils. Protein molecules eventually lost their intrinsic structure, which was also followed by aggregation and degeneration. Atomic force microscopy was used to investigate how proteins' spherical and linear shapes changed over time. As the protein unfolded and intermolecular aggregation occurred, circular dichroism (CD) demonstrated that the protein's secondary structure altered from a-helix to β-sheet and random coils. Furthermore, the fibrous protein films' mechanical characteristics were enhanced, particularly the elongation (E) of amyloid SPI films, which increased from 33.50 % to 100.57 %. Additionally, the films' water solubility (WS) and water vapor permeability (WVP) were both decreased. In order to create an antibacterial edible film, vanillin was also added to the fibrous protein solution as a bacteriostatic agent. The results showed that the fibrous protein film demonstrated a great bacteriostatic action and retained good shape. Here we present this simple and efficient method to obtain robust, flexible films, which not only provides a strategy for films with good mechanical properties but also extends their antibacterial by adding a bacteriostatic agent to further provide a new idea for food packaging.

Abstract:Food packaging is an essential line to defend against the intrusion of undesirable external factors to protect food. The antibacterial edible films are considered as promising food packaging due to their biodegradability, environmental friendliness, and safety. In this paper, recent research progress on antimicrobial edible films based on polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids is reviewed. It is worth noting that polysaccharides and proteins are the main substrates of antimicrobial edible films, while lipids are mainly plasticizers and carriers of active substances in composite films. For example, second-generation liposomes have been investigated as promising carriers for antimicrobial substances or other bioactive substances due to their excellent stability. Moreover, recent advances and future trends of antimicrobial edible films are then analyzed. Linking antimicrobial edible film materials to delivery systems for stable loading of bioactive substances is a promising future direction, such as nanoemulsion and microencapsulation technologies. In addition, a smart and active packaging that allows consumers to directly determine the freshness of food products without unwrapping the package has come into the limelight. Currently, pH-sensitive films and smart fluorescent "on–off" sensors for humidity have been investigated as smart and active packaging materials for monitoring the freshness of food products, which can be vigorously explored in the future.

Abstract:Due to the growing concerns surrounding microbial contamination and food safety, there has been a surge of interest in fabricating novel food packaging with highly efficient antibacterial activity. Herein, we describe novel photodynamic antibacterial konjac glucomannan (KGM)/polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofibers incorporated with lignin-zinc oxide composite nanoparticles (L-ZnONPs) and curcumin (Cur) via electrospinning technology. The resulting KGM/PVP/Cur/L-ZnONPs nanofibers exhibited favorable hydrophobic properties (water contact angle: 118.1°), thermal stability, and flexibility (elongation at break: 241.9%). Notably, the inclusion of L-ZnONPs and Cur endowed the nanofibers with remarkable antioxidant (ABTS radical scavenging activity: 98.1%) and photodynamic antimicrobial properties, demonstrating enhanced inhibitory effect against both Staphylococcus aureus (inhibition: 12.4 mm) and Escherichia coli (12.1 mm). As a proof-of-concept study, we evaluated the feasibility of applying nanofibers to fresh strawberries, and the findings demonstrated that our nanofibers could delay strawberry spoilage and inhibit microbial growth. This photodynamic antimicrobial approach holds promise for design of highly efficient antibacterial food packaging, thereby contributing to enhanced food safety and quality assurance.

Abstract:The adherence of foodborne microorganisms threatens human health, necessitating the development of antibacterial food packaging films. In this study, the antibacterial agent carvacrol (CV), hindered by its high volatility and intense aromatic odor, was encapsulated within the photosensitive metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) material PCN-224 (loading rate 50%). Subsequently, the microfluidic-blow-spinning (MBS) technique was employed for the rapid fabrication of CV@PCN-224/polycaprolactone (PCL)/chitosan (CS) nanofiber films. The incorporation of CV@PCN-224 NPs enhances the nanofiber films' thermal stability and mechanical properties and improves the water vapor permeability while maintaining the sustained release of CV over an extended period and good biocompatibility. Due to the simultaneous loading of antibacterial agent (CV) and photosensitive agent (PCN-224), the CV@PCN-224/PCL/CS films exhibited good synergistic antibacterial functionality, as demonstrated by effective inhibition against both E. coli and S. aureus. All results show the vast potential of the prepared nanofiber films in antibacterial food packaging.

Abstract:The application of the nanofiber film in the field of food preservation was an emerging research direction in recent years. With the functionalization of nanofibers, the quality and safety of food can be better guaranteed. In the present work, thymol as an antibacterial agent was encapsulated into poly(lactide- co-glycolide) to form core-shell nanofibers by coaxial electrospinning. With such a core-shell nanofiber film, thymol can be slowly released to headspace between food and the nanofiber film, inhibiting the growth of bacteria on the surface of food. The morphology and core-shell structure of nanofibers were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The antibacterial and fruit preservation abilities of the nanofiber film were tested on strawberries. Studies have shown that it can effectively inhibit the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeast and extend the shelf life of fruit. This novel antibacterial packaging material with excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and good sustained release performance would have a broad application prospect in the field of food preservation.

Visible light-responsive polylactic acid@pullulan-chitosan/homojunction g-C3N4 bilayer antimicrobial films for fruit preservation

Abstract:The development of novel packaging materials with antimicrobial properties is crucial in preventing the microbial-induced spoilage of fruits, vegetables, and foodborne illnesses. In this study, homojunction g-C3N4 (HCN) photocatalysts with excellent photocatalytic performance were incorporated into a matrix consisting of pullulan/chitosan (Pul/CS). These photocatalysts were then electrostatically spun onto polylactic acid (PLA) films to fabricate PLA@Pul/CS/HCN nanofibrous composite films. The design of the bilayer films aimed to combine the physical properties of PLA film with the excellent antibacterial properties of nanofiber films, thereby achieving synergistic advantages. The incorporation of the HCN photocatalysts resulted in enhanced hydrophobicity, barrier function, and mechanical properties of the composite films. Under visible light irradiation, the PLA@Pul/CS/HCN films exhibited approximately 3.43 log and 3.11 log reductions of Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), respectively, within 2 h. The excellent antimicrobial performance could be attributed to the synergistic effect of CS and the release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from HCN. Moreover, the strawberries packaged in the PLA@Pul/CS/HCN film demonstrated diminished quality degradation and a prolonged shelf life following visible light irradiation treatment. This study will provide new insights into the exploration of safe and efficient antimicrobial food packaging.

Abstract:IN RECENT YEAHS, there has been much interest in the diagnostic potential of cerebral response averaging for detection or confirmation and categorization of disordered function of exteroceptive sensory systems. For the visual pathway, it has been convincingly documented that the early portion of the light-evoked, occipital response (waves I, 11, and 111) is consistently, although variably, altered in retrogeniculate lesions made evident by the presence of homonymous field defects or cortical blindness-4 One sign often encountered in the former is early left-right phase inversion." Exaggeration of late waves has been observed in patients with both field defects and visual seizure^.^^^ This communication describes and analyzes the visually evoked responses (VERs) , along with the electroencephalographic findings, of 3 patients presenting for diagnostic study who had brief periods of blindness which occurred some years after head trauma. These cases engaged our attention because of the unusual nature of the complaint, the paucity of objective clinical evidence of visual system damage, and the positive contribution made by the electrophysiological studies in elucidating the mechanism of the symptom.
Pullulan nanofibrous films incorporated with W/O emulsions via microfluidic solution blow spinning technology

Abstract:In this work, pullulan (PUL) nanofibrous films incorporated with water-in-oil emulsions (PE) were prepared by microfluidic blowing spinning (MBS). The microstructures of nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). With the addition of W/O emulsions, the thermal stability, mechanical, and water barrier properties of PUL nanofibers were improved. Increases in emulsion content significantly affected the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of nanofibrous films. ABTS and DPPH free radical scavenging rates increased from 10.26 % and 8.57 % to 60.66 % and 57.54 %, respectively. The inhibition zone of PE nanofibers against E. coli and S. aureus increased from 11.00 to 20.00 and from 15.67 to 21.17 mm, respectively. In addition, we investigated the freshness effectiveness of PE nanofibrous films on fresh-cut apples. PE nanofibrous films significantly maintained the firmness, and reduced the weight loss and browning index of the fresh-cut apple, throughout the 4 days of storage. Thus, the PE nanofibrous films exhibited good potential to prolong the shelf life of fresh-cut fruit and promote the development of active food packaging.

Abstract:In the present study, a new active electrospun nanofiber (NF) based on polylactic acid (PLA) and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) containing pomegranate peel extract (PPE) was developed as antimicrobial food packaging materials. Based on the results, by increasing the HPMC content from 5 to 20%, the solution viscosity increased and subsequently, a bead-free morphology with increasing NF diameter was observed. Therefore, PLA/HPMC NFs with ratio of 80:20 (optimal sample) were designated for delivery of PPE as the antioxidant and antibacterial agent. There was no significant change in the NF diameter by increasing the concentration of the PPE. The water contact angel (∼ 88.5°) of optimal NF decreased after increasing the concentration of the PPE (∼ 68.5°). Moreover, after the incorporation of the extract into the NFs, the thermal stability, tensile stress (7.33 MPa at dry state, and 11.54 MPa at wet state), porosity (∼ 90%), and water vapor transmission rate (∼ 278 g/mm2.24 h) were improved. The results of the antioxidant activity showed that this extract increased the antioxidant activity of NFs by about ∼ 60% in the highest concentration (10 wt%) and also inhibited the growth of pathogenic bacteria. In conclusion, the PLA/HPMC electrospun NFs with ratio of 80:20 containing 10% PPE can be a good candidate as the new active food packaging system.

Abstract:To protect the food contents from the exterior environmental stimulus and microbial contamination, herein, a photodynamic and photothermal synergistic antibacterial film (PP/GC film), as food packaging material, was synthesized by a solution-casting method. In brief, the film utilized gelatin‒carboxymethyl cellulose (GC) as the matrix for accommodating PCN@PDA nanoparticles (PPNPs), a porphyrin metal‒organic framework (PCN‒224) coating with a polydopamine layer. Various characterizations were implemented to demonstrate the successful formation of PPNPs, which simultaneously exhibited the methyl orange photodegradation ability and the photothermal conversion capability under 660 nm irradiation. The incorporation of 5% wt PPNPs significantly improved the mechanical properties, water barrier properties and UV shielding performance of the films. Notably, the PP/GC films had efficient antibacterial activity within short periods of irradiation time. Moreover, the as‒prepared films significantly improved the storage safety of pork, which can be a good development prospect in the food industry.

Abstract:The development of new bioactive food-packaging materials that extend the shelf life of food is an important objective. Herein, we report the fabrication of four polylactic acid/tea polyphenol (PLA/TP) composite nanofibers, with PLA/TP ratios of 5:1, 4:1, 3:1, and 2:1, by electrospinning. The morphological quality of each sample was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and samples with higher TP content were found to be deeper in color. The samples were then examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy to confirm the presence of TP. Examination of the mechanical properties of these fibers revealed that the presence of TP decreased both tensile strength and elongation at break; however, this decrease was only slight for the PLA/TP-3:1 composite fiber. The addition of TP influenced the hydrophilic⁻hydrophobic property and release behavior of the composite fibers, which significantly improved the antioxidant behavior of these samples, with 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging capacities of up to 95.07% ± 10.55% observed. Finally, antimicrobial activities against <i>Escherichia coli</i> and <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> of up to 92.26% ± 5.93% and 94.58% ± 6.53%, respectively, were observed for the PLA/TP-3:1 composite fiber. The present study demonstrated that PLA/TP composite nanofibers can potentially be used for food-packaging applications that extend food shelf life.

Abstract:Bio-based active food packaging materials have a high market demand. We use coaxial electrospinning technology to prepare core-shell structured nanofibers with sustained antibacterial and antioxidant properties. The fiber core layer was composed of gelatin and tea polyphenols, whereas tea polyphenols provide antibacterial and antioxidant properties; the fiber sheath was composed of pullulan polysaccharides with antioxidant properties. By using a scanning electron microscope, it can be seen that the diameter distribution of the prepared nanofibers was uniform and the surface is smooth; using a transmission electron microscope, it can be clearly seen that the nanofibers have a core-shell structure; Fourier Transform Infrared and X-ray diffraction analysis indicate that the nanofibers have an amorphous structure; the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging shows that nanofibers have higher antioxidant properties with the addition of tea polyphenols; antibacterial test showed that nanofibers had obvious inhibitory effect on the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli; and the nanofiber film dissolution test shows that nanofibers can be used as fast soluble active packaging. Finally, core-sheath-structured nanofibers can serve as active packaging for instant food, possessing both rapid water solubility and excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activity, making water-soluble nanofibers interesting applications in the field of food packaging.
Metallic Nanoparticle Integrated Ternary Polymer Blend of PVA/Starch/Glycerol: A Promising Antimicrobial Food Packaging Material

Abstract:Advances in food processing and food packaging play a major role in keeping food safe, increasing the shelf life, and maintaining the food supply chain. Good packaging materials that enable the safe travel of food are often non-degradable and tend to persist in the environment, thereby posing a hazard. One alternative is to synthesize biodegradable polymers with an antimicrobial property while maintaining their mechanical and thermal properties. In the present study, biodegradable composites of PVA–starch–glycerol (PSG) incorporated with CuO and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared as PSG, PSG–Cu, PSG–Zn, and PSG–CuZn films. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis were performed to study and characterize these films. The water barrier properties of the films improved significantly as the hydrophobicity of the PSG–CuZn film increased by 32.9% while the water absorptivity and solubility decreased by 51.49% and 60% compared to the PSG film. The Young’s modulus of the films incorporated with CuO and ZnO nanoparticles was lower than that reported for PVA, suggesting that the film possessed higher flexibility. The thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated high thermal stability for films. Biosynthesized CuO and ZnO nanoparticles exhibited antifungal activity against vegetable and fruit spoilage fungi, and hence the fabricated polymers incorporated with nanoparticles were anticipated to demonstrate an antifungal activity. The nanoparticle incorporated films exhibited fungicidal and bactericidal activity, suggesting their role in extending the shelf life of packaged food. The result of ICP-OES studies demonstrated the steady release of ions from the polymer films, however, EDX analysis demonstrated no leaching of CuO and ZnO nanoparticles from the films, thus ruling out the possibility of nanoparticles entering the packaged food. The strawberries wrapped with the fabricated films incorporated with nanoparticles demonstrated improved shelf life and retained the nutritional quality of the fruit. Among the four films, PSG–CuZn was the most promising for food wrapping since it exhibited better water-resistance, antimicrobial, thermal, and mechanical properties.

Abstract:Food-borne diseases caused by fresh fruits and vegetables seriously threaten human health. The polycaprolactone (PCL) polymer with good biodegradability has drawn growing interest in packaging and protecting of fresh fruits and vegetables. The disadvantage of pure PCL as a packaging material is the lack of the antibacterial function. Photodynamic sterilization as a safe and effective antibacterial method is now the emerging means for food safety. Therefore, the porphyrinic metal–organic framework MOF-545 as a highly effective photosensitizer was incorporated with PCL to prepare a biodegradable antibacterial composite film. The incorporation of MOF-545 nanorods significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity and mechanical strength of the film while slightly decreasing the transparency. The PCL/MOF-545 (10%) film exhibited the strongest antibacterial activity under a white LED light. This film was used for packaging fresh-cut apples and effectively killed 96% of the microorganisms, also delaying the apples’ discoloration and water loss. The PCL/MOF-545 film showed great potential for the antibacterial packaging of fruits and vegetables.

Abstract:The Ag@MgO nanoparticles (NPs), consisting of silver NPs with a size range of 6–15 nm well-dispersed on the surface of MgO nanoparticles, were synthesized using a simple and efficient in situ synthesis method. These NPs exhibited superior antibacterial activity compared to bare MgO NPs. Subsequently, they were incorporated into poly(butylene succinate- co -terephthalate) (PBST) matrix to prepare antibacterial food packaging films. The effects of Ag@MgO morphology on the compatibility, mechanical, water vapor barrier, UV blocking and antibacterial properties of PBST matrix were evaluated. Unmodified Ag@MgO caused agglomeration and poor mechanical properties. However, when the Ag@MgO NPs were surface modified and interacted with the PBST matrix, the dispersion of nanoparticles and crystallinity improved, resulting in enhanced tensile strength and barrier properties of the composite films. Furthermore, the well-formed of Ag@MgO NPs in the films played a positive role in controlling the growth of microorganisms. Upon incorporation of the modified Ag@MgO NPs, the PBST nanocomposite films exhibited a 23.5% increase in the tensile strength and a 63% decrease in the water vapor permeability compared to PBST films. Moreover, the UV blocking performances were enhanced, and high antibacterial rates of 99.8% and 99.7% were achieved against E. coli and S. aureus , respectively. All the results indicate that the PBST incorporating modified Ag@MgO NPs have excellent potential for use in food packaging applications.

Abstract:William J. Barbaresi, MD In the 8 years since the publication of the study describing long-term stimulant medication treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) from early childhood through adolescence among children from a population-based birth cohort, there have been a number of studies that have added to our understanding and capacity to treat ADHD, the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood.1–3 The original study demonstrated that nearly 80% of children with ADHD were treated with stimulant medication at some time during childhoodadolescence; treatment effectiveness was comparable with efficacy rates from previous clinical trials, and side effects occurred at an acceptable rate. However, treatment duration averaged just over 3 years. The imperative to ensure long-term treatment of ADHD has increased as studies, including additional reports from an adult follow-up of this cohort, have demonstrated the chronicity and adverse impact of ADHD from childhood through adulthood.4,5 Recent reports have demonstrated that ADHD is being diagnosed and treated at rates that continue to increase.3 Nevertheless, as in the original study, many children with ADHD continue to go untreated, and, perhaps most disturbing, the evidence continues to suggest that treatment is not continued into the highrisk adolescent and early adult years despite the known chronicity of ADHD and its attendant impact on adolescents and young adults.3,6 A number of new long-acting stimulant and nonstimulant medications have become available in recent years, and it is hoped that these treatment options, along with increased understanding about the chronicity of ADHD, will lead to improved rates of long-term treatment and improved outcomes (see http://www.webmd.com/addadhd/adhd-medication-chart for a list of currently available medications). UPDATES Rate of ADHD Diagnosis and Treatment in Childhood The issue of long-term treatment of ADHD can only be understood in the context of the epidemiology of the disorder, particularly given the high prevalence of ADHD because the US public continues to express concern about rates at which stimulant medications are prescribed to children. In a recent CDC report describing rates of parent-reported ADHD diagnosis among US children aged 4 to 17 years from 2003 to 2011, prevalence of having ever received an ADHD diagnosis increased from 7.8% to 11.0%.3 The reported 11.0% prevalence rate equates to 6.4 million children having received an ADHD diagnosis, whereas 8.0% (5.1 million) were reported to have a current ADHD diagnosis. However, among those with a current ADHD diagnosis, only 69.0% were taking ADHD medication (6.1% or 3.5 million children). This figure is somewhat lower than the 77.8% stimulant treatment rate in the 1976–1980 Rochester, MN birth cohort during childhood.1
A Fluorescent Polyvinyl Alcohol Film with Efficient Photodynamic Antimicrobial Performance Enabled by Berberine/Phytic Acid Salt for Food Preservation

Abstract:Herein, a series of PVA films containing the salt of phytic acid and berberine are prepared and exhibit high ultraviolet shielding, mechanical, and fluorescent properties. After being irradiated with white light, the prepared films show satisfactory antimicrobial activity against both bacteria and molds and can effectively delay the quality deterioration of cooked chicken and oranges. Food packaging that impedes microbial growth and can be safely used is critical to attenuate food spoilage. Herein, a green berberine/phytate salt (BPA) is successfully synthesized and aggregated in polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film to impart fluorescent and photodynamic antimicrobial properties. Compared to berberine hydrochloride (BHL), BPA exhibited stronger fluorescence because intramolecular motions and intermolecular π–π accumulation of BHL are restricted by phytic acid (PA). Molecular dynamics simulation indicate that aggregation of BHL and PA formed through electrostatic interactions in the PVA matrix due to the change of the binding energy during the drying process. With increasing BPA content, the films exhibited increased ultraviolet, water vapor, and oxygen barriers and fluorescent properties, but reduced tensile strength and elongation at break. After radiated, PVA‐BPA9 film showed the highest antimicrobial rates against Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, P. citrinum, and Aspergillus niger reached 100%, 100%, 86.14%, and 66.24%, respectively, due to the increased reactive oxygen species production. The total number of microbial colonies in cooked chicken and oranges packaged by PVA‐BPA9 film with irradiation ARE 87.54% and 29.21% of those by PVA film. The findings indicate a new and feasible strategy to obtain a green photodynamic‐mediated film for safe and effective food packaging.

Abstract:Edible packaging films using polymer for food preservation have been developed for a long time. In this study, the effects of different concentrations (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, w/v) of tea polyphenols incorporated into pullulan-Carboxymethylcellulose sodium (Pul-CMC) solutions on electrospun nanofiber films were evaluated. The fiber size distribution was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The morphological features of nanofibers were modulated through adjusting process parameters (e.g. concentration of polymer solution, applied voltage and feeding rate). Increasing the applied voltage from 19 to 21kV and the feed rate from 0.36 to 0.6mL/h leads to a reduction in mean fiber diameter. Fruit packaging potential was evaluated using strawberry. The pullulan-CMC-TP nanofibers significantly decreased weight loss and maintained the firmness of the strawberries, and improved the quality of the fruit during storage. The findings demonstrate a facile packaging route to improve food sustainability and reduce waste.
