Abstract:Because of its large surface area and rich functional groups, biochar has been used as an inhibitor to regulate the release of nitrogen from inorganic nitrogenous fertilizers. The experimental treatments included a control condition (CK; no nitrogen and no biochar), ammonium nitrate and no biochar (AN), biochar and no nitrogen (BC), blending-processed biochar-based nitrogenous fertilizer (BP-BNF), adsorption-processed BNF (AP-BNF), and reaction-processed BNF (RP-BNF). The properties of biochar and BNFs and their effects on chemical properties of soils, winter wheat growth, and grain yield were investigated. The order of the nutrient-loading capabilities and quantities and retention intensities of BNFs compared to AN was RP>AP>BP-BNF. Biochar and BNFs had no significant effects on the soil nutrient indexes; however, the productive tiller, 1000-grain weight, and biomass and grain yield of winter wheat increased by 5.50, 8.46, 23.85, and 23.42%, respectively, owing to the addition of BNFs. Additionally, the quantity of nitrogen in grain increased significantly with BNF treatments. By quantifying nitrogen utilization, a conclusion was drawn that the RP-BNF treatment was the most effective of the three kinds of BNFs. © 2018 Friends Science Publishers

Changes in Abundance and Composition of Nitrifying Communities in Barley (hordeum Vulgare L.) Rhizosphere and Bulk Soils over the Growth Period Following Combined Biochar and Urea Amendment

Abstract:To understand the effects of biochar and urea on soil N availability and plant growth, we conducted a pot experiment growing barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) under six treatments: control (N0), soil with 30 g kg−1 biochar (N0B), soil with 0.23 g kg−1 urea (N1), soil with 0.23 g kg−1 urea and 30 g kg−1 biochar (N1B), soil with 0.46 g kg−1 urea (N2), and soil with 0.46 g kg−1 urea and 30 g kg−1 biochar (N2B). The nitrifying community abundance and compositions in rhizosphere and bulk soils were analyzed using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and amplicon-based Illumina Hiseq sequencing. Adding urea with biochar (N1B) produced the greatest increase in above- and belowground plant biomass, followed by doubling the amount of urea with biochar (N2B); both treatments raised pH (p < 0.001) and lowered extractable N in the rhizosphere (p < 0.05). N1B treatment produced the greatest increase in ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) amoA gene copies, presumably because the combined amendment raised soil pH, which favored AOB access to NH4+. Nitrifier sequences were selected after blasting with reported nitrifiers in NCBI (similarity ≥ 97%). Nitrosospira dominated AOB communities during the plant seedling stage; however, during the mature stage, Nitrosomonas dominated over Nitrosospira and the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) community became diverse. Redundancy analysis indicated that nitrifying community composition was affected by multiple soil properties, including N availability (i.e., exchangeable NH4+ and NO3−) and soil chemistry (i.e., pH, dissolved organic C, and exchangeable base cations). Our research suggests a positive application of combining biochar with urea in improving N bioavailability and promoting plant growth in the acidic soil.
Nitrogen enrichment potential of biochar in relation to pyrolysis temperature and feedstock quality

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) enrichment of biochar from both inorganic and organic waste N sources has the potential to add economic and environmental value through its use as a slow release N fertilizer. We investigated the sorption of N by, and its release from, biochar made at pyrolysis temperatures of 400, 500 and 600 °C from three feedstocks: poultry litter (PL with a carbon (C) to N ratio (C:N) of 14), softwood chips of spruce-pine-fir (SPF with a C:N of 470), and a 50:50 mixture of PL and SPF (PL/SPF). The prepared biochars were enriched with ammonium nitrate (AN) and urea ammonium nitrate (UAN). PL biochars had the lowest C content (50-56% C), but the highest pH (9.3-9.9), electrical conductivity (EC, 780-960 dS m(-1)), cation exchange capacity (CEC, 40-46 cmol kg(-1)), and N content (3.3-4.5%). While N content and hydrogen (H) to C atomic ratio (H:C) decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature irrespective of the feedstock used, both pH and EC slightly increased with pyrolysis temperature for all feedstocks. The PL and SPF biochars showed similar H:C and also similar N sorption and N release at all pyrolysis temperatures. These biochars sorbed up to 5% N by mass, irrespective of the source of N. However, PL/SPF biochar performed poorly in sorbing N from either AN or UAN. Biochar H:C was found to be unrelated to N sorption rates, suggesting that physical adsorption on active surfaces was the main mechanism of N sorption in these biochars. There were minor differences between N sorbed from NO3-N and NH4-N among different biochars. Very small amounts of sorbed N (0.2-0.4 mg N g(-1) biochar) was released when extracted with 1 M KCl solution, indicating that the retained N was strongly held in complex bonds, more so for NH4-N because the release of NO3-N was 3-4 times greater than that of NH4-N. NH4-N sorption far exceeded the effective CEC of the biochars, thereby suggesting that most of the sorption may be due to physical entrapment of NH4(+) in biochar pores. The results of this study suggest that biochar can be used to remove excess N from poultry and dairy manure and be a good mitigation option for reducing N leaching and gaseous losses.
Effect of Biochar on Mineral Nitrogen Content in Soils with Different Ph Values.

Abstract:Biochar is the charred byproduct of biomass pyrolysis, the heating of plant-derived material in the absence of oxygen in order to capture combustible gases. Key chemical and physical properties of biochar are greatly affected both by the choice of feedstock (crop waste, energy crop, etc.) and the process conditions (mainly temperature and time). The effect of temperature on biochar properties shows that biochar created at low temperature may be suitable for controlling the release of nutrients, whilst high temperature biochars may be more suitable for use as activated carbon. The other key aspect of biochar is related to carbon sequestration and improvement of soil productivity. Soils amended with biochar in many centuries ago by pre-Colombian peoples in the Amazon Basin still retain higher plant-available nutrients than the adjacent unamended soils. Additions of biochar to soil have shown definite increases in the availability of major cations and phosphorus as well as total nitrogen concentration. The causes for high fertility of these soils are multiple, but the source of the large amounts of organic matter and their high nutrient retention has been attributed to the extraordinarily high proportions of black carbon. Besides, the high available nitrogen (N) is from both direct nutrient addition by the biochar and greater nutrient retention. It is also reported biochar can influence soil N concentrations via affecting soil process, such as N transformation. However, it remains largely unknown how biochar affect N transformations.In this study, biochars were produced at 350°C (BC350) and 700°C (BC700) by using Miscanthus giganteus, and applied with and without ryegrass into soils with low (pH=3.8) and high pH values (pH=7.6) incubated for 180 days. Our results showed that the addition of biochar to soils had an average increase of total N content of 22% and 17%, respectively in acid and alkaline soils. Biochars had obvious effect on NH4+-N in acid soil. After 87 days of incubation, NH4+-N was declined to very low concentration. BC350 had a slight increase of NO3--N in acid soil. Compared with BC350, soils with BC700 significantly (p<0.05) decreased the concentration of NO3--N. For BC700, NO3--N in acid soil declined from 96.23 mg/kg to 4.39 mg/kg. Results also showed that biochars had high adsorption on NH4+-N. but no NO3--N was adsorpted, showing different impact of biochar on NH4+-N and NO3--N. This can partly explain why NH4+-N was not detected within all biochar addition treatments while NO3--N differed between soils and biochar. In addition, the increased soil microbial biomass via pH changes and better micro-environment, which affect biochar N transformation, thus possibly benefit N use of plant. No significant difference (p>0.05) was observed in treatments with and without ryegrass, neither between day 87 and 180, suggesting mineralization was largely occurred at the early incubation time in the soil with biochar added. The effects of biochar on the form and content of soil mineral nitrogen were closely related to the biochar’s abilities including ammonium adsorption, enhancing soil pH value, enhancing ammonia volatilization, and microbial biomass nitrogen formation. In the practical application, using biochar as coating materials in producing the slow-release fertilizer to improve nitrogen use efficiency seems to be very promised, and more research is needed in this area in the near future.
Wood Biochar Increases Nitrogen Retention in Field Settings Mainly Through Abiotic Processes

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) is an essential element associated with crop yield and its availability is largely controlled by microbially-mediated processes. The abundance of microbial functional genes (MFG) involved in N transformations can be influenced by agricultural practices and soil amendments. Biochar may alter microbial functional gene abundances through changing soil properties, thereby affecting N cycling and its availability to crops. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of wood biochar application on N retention and MFG under field settings. This was achieved by characterising soil labile N and their stable isotope compositions and by quantifying the gene abundance of nifH (nitrogen fixation), narG (nitrate reduction), nirS, nirK (nitrite reduction), nosZ (nitrous oxide reduction), and bacterial and archeal amoA (ammonia oxidation). A wood-based biochar was applied to a macadamia orchard soil at rates of 10 t ha(-1) (B10) and 30 t ha(-1) (B30). The soil was sampled after 6 and 12 months. The abundance of narG in both B10 and B30 was lower than that of control at both sampling months. Canonical Correspondence Analysis showed that soil variables (including dissolved organic C, NO3--N and NH4+-N) and sampling time influenced MFG, but biochar did not directly impact on MFG. Twelve months after biochar application, NH4+-N concentrations had significantly decreased in both B10 (4.74 mu g g(-1)) and B30 (5.49 mu g g(-1)) compared to C10 (13.9 mu g g(-1)) and C30 (17.9 mu g g(-1)), whereas NO3--N concentrations increased significantly in B30 (24.7 mu g g(-1)) compared to B10 (12.7 mu g g(-1)) and control plots (6.18 mu g g(-1) and 7.97 mu g g(-1) in C10 and 00 respectively). At month 12, significant delta N-15 of NO3--N depletion observed in B30 may have been caused by a marked increase in NO3--N availability and retention in those plots. Hence, it is probable that the N retention in high rate biochar plots was mediated primarily by abiotic factors. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Biochar enhancement of nitrification processes varies with soil conditions

Abstract:Application of inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizers in agriculture can increase emissions of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, leaching of nitrate (NO3-), a groundwater contaminant hazardous to human health, and soil acidification. Soil amendment with biochar potentially mitigates these losses and undesirable outcomes. However, there have been considerable inconsistencies in reported impacts, likely owing to variable physiochemical characteristics of the biochar materials and/or the soil environment. This study methodically evaluated the impact of biochar soil incorporation on N transformation and underlying microbial processes using soils with varying biochar types, soil texture, soil moisture, and manure compost co- amendments. Laboratory incubations were conducted to monitor the fate of urea fertilizer N spiked in biochar amended and unamended soils by assaying soil ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2-), and NO3- concentrations, pH, and abundances of soil nitrifiers; ammonia oxidizing bacteria and archaea (AOB and AOA) and Nitrospira with the capacity to perform complete ammonia oxidation (comammox). Soil moisture was a critical factor affecting N transformation processes, more so than biochar, but biochar did result in significantly different concentrations of N species in response to urea application. Biochar enhanced nitrification, more significantly in drier conditions and in sandy soil. Biochar offered some buffering potential in the neutral-alkaline, unsaturated soils, preventing >1 unit drop in pH compared to unamended soils. Co-application of biochar with manure composts enhanced nitrification slightly, which was evidenced by higher abundances of some soil nitrifiers at 4 weeks, although increases in nitrification rates were not statistically significant. Soil nitrifier populations tended to increase in response to a pinewood biochar, but trends differed for saturated soil, in soils of differing textures, or when different biochar materials were evaluated. Thus, when evaluating implications of biochar on the fate of mineral N fertilizer, soil moisture and other environment conditions should be considered.
Responses of Nitrification and Bacterial Community in Three Size Aggregates of Paddy Soil to Both of Initial Fertility and Biochar Addition

Abstract:Biochar has been suggested to increase the soil nutrient retention capacity. The interaction of biochar addition and soil initial fertility through modifying soil aggregates on soil bacterial community and nitrogen transformation is still unclear. A 60-day incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the influences of biochar addition on soil nitrification and associated nitrifying microbial community in three size aggregates of different derived soils. The results indicated that potential nitrification rates (PNRs) in three size soil aggregates of biochar addition treatment were significantly (P < 0.05) higher than those of no biochar addition, especially in small size aggregates or in the soils collected from no fertilizer plots. The results of 16S rRNA gene profiling showed that biochar addition significantly (P < 0.05) increased community alpha-diversity. Nitrosomonas was relatively more abundant in microaggregates, whereas Nitrospira was more abundant in macroaggregates. Biochar addition could modify structure of soil microbial communities by changing soil properties, and consequently regulate the nitrification processes as suggested by canonical correlation analysis. Conclusively, biochar addition can promote the nitrification process with the higher community diversity and activity of nitrifying bacteria in soils, more strongly in fertile soils or in the small macroaggregates. The initial soil fertility should be fully considered in practical application of biochar.
Biochar rate-dependent regulation of extended nitrogen supply by modifying stable aggregates-N and microbial responses

Abstract:Abstract Besides carbon sequestration, biochar amendment in soils can regulate the loss of applied fertilizer-nitrogen (N) into the environment. Soil aggregates are essential in controlling soil N stocks' stabilization and supply. However, unraveling the rate-dependent impact of biochar on stable soil aggregates and their associated N in fertilized soils over an extended period is a prerequisite to understanding its implications on soil-N dynamics. We unraveled how high and low biochar application rates combined with inorganic fertilizer (20- and 40-tons ha −1 [FB1 and FB2]) affected soil N fractions, stable soil aggregates, aggregates associated-N, and microbial responses to regulate N supply for Nageia nagi after one year. Results revealed that biochar amendment, especially at higher rate, increased the concentration of inorganic N and some amino acids compared to sole fertilizer (F). Available N increased by 16.5% ( p = 0.057), 23.8% ( p = 0.033), and 34.8% ( p = 0.028) in F, FB1, and FB2, respectively, compared to the control (C). Also, 28.1% and 32.8% significant increases in the availability of NH 4 + -N were recorded in FB1 and FB2, respectively, compared to F. NO 3 − -N availability was significantly increased by 15.2%, 21.8%, and 20.8% in FB1, FB2, and C, compared to F. Biochar amendment, irrespective of rate, increased stable microaggregates (< 0.25 mm). However, FB2 significantly increased macro- and intermediate-aggregate-N, and urease activity, and hence higher N supply capacity to meet the N need of N. nagi even after one year. Hence, the N content of N. nagi was 41.3%, 28.8%, and 12.2% higher in FB2, FB1, and F, respectively, compared to the control. Biochar amendment decreased bacterial species diversity but increased the proportion of NH 4 + -oxidizers (especially the Betaproteobacteria) to maintain the mineralization and slow release of N. Although a low biochar rate was more beneficial than sole fertilization, higher biochar application rate could sustain higher N supply by stabilizing soil microaggregates and increasing macro- and intermediate-aggregates N, its mineralization, and slow-release over longer periods.

Abstract:Nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are vital for crop growth. However, most agricultural systems have limited inherent ability to supply N and P to crops. Biochars (BCs) are strongly advocated in agrosystems and are known to improve the availability of N and P in crops through different chemical transformations. Herein, a soil-biochar incubation experiment was carried out to investigate the transformations of N and P in two different textured soils, namely clay loam and loamy sand, on mixing with rice straw biochar (RSB) and acacia wood biochar (ACB) at each level (0, 0.5, and 1.0% w/w). Ammonium N (NH 4 -N) decreased continuously with the increasing incubation period. The ammonium N content disappeared rapidly in both the soils incubated with biochars compared to the unamended soil. RSB increased the nitrate N (NO 3 –N) content significantly compared to ACB for the entire study period in both texturally divergent soils. The nitrate N content increased with the enhanced biochar addition rate in clay loam soil until 15 days after incubation; however, it was reduced for the biochar addition rate of 1% compared to 0.5% at 30 and 60 days after incubation in loamy sand soil. With ACB, the net increase in nitrate N content with the biochar addition rate of 1% remained higher than the 0.5% rate for 60 days in clay loam and 30 days in loamy sand soil. The phosphorus content remained consistently higher in both the soils amended with two types of biochars till the completion of the experiment.

Purification and characterization of D-xylose isomerase from Bifidobacterium adolescentis.

Abstract:D-Xylose isomerase was purified to homogeneity from cell-free extracts of Bifidobacterium adolescentis by ammonium sulfate fractionation and chromatographies on DEAE-cellulose and Butyl-Toyopearl. The molecular weight of the purified enzyme was estimated to be 168,000 by gel filtration on TSKgel G-3000SW, and 53,000 on SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The optimum pH was around 7 and the enzyme was stable at pH 7-8. The enzyme required bivalent cations, Mg2+, Co2+, or Mn2+ for the activity, particularly Mn2+ to be best. The enzyme had a pI of 4.3, and the Km for D-xylose was 4 mM. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the enzyme was not similar to those of D-xylose isomerases from other sources such as Clostridium thermosulfurogenes, Escherichia coli, or Bacillus subtilis.
Field Assessment of Biochar Interactions With Chemical and Biological N Fertilization in Pointed White Cabbage

Abstract:This study assessed the agronomic and environmental impacts of applying (1) biochar‐based N fertilizer and coapplication of biochar with either (2) N‐fixing bacteria or (3) split synthetic N fertilizer. These treatments were compared to the sole application of either N‐fixing bacteria or split synthetic N fertilizer. The biochar‐based fertilizer showed similar agronomic performance to synthetic fertilizer but significantly enhanced the activity of N‐fixing bacteria and reduced the global warming potential, primarily due to the increase in soil organic C content. The interaction of biochar with mineral fertilization has attracted attention as a strategy to reduce N losses and enhance nitrogen use efficiency. In this study, we investigated the coapplication of biochar with two optimized fertilization strategies based on split urea and a microbial inoculant (Azospirillum brasilense) in a commercial pointed white cabbage crop. Additionally, we evaluated a third optimized N fertilization alternative, a biochar‐based fertilizer (BBF) enriched in plant‐available N, which was developed from the same biochar. We assessed environmental impacts such as greenhouse gasses (GHG) and NH3 emissions, yield‐scaled N2O emissions, and global warming potential (GWP). Additionally, we evaluated agronomical outcomes such as crop yield, plant N, and chlorophyll concentration. Moreover, we examined the N‐fixing gene's total and relative abundance (nifH and nifH/16S). Biochar and BBF exhibited similar crop yield, GHG, and NH3 emissions compared to split applications of the synthetic fertilizer. The main difference was associated with the higher soil C sequestration in biochar and BBF treatments that reduced the associated GWP of these fertilization strategies. Finally, biochar favored the activity of the N‐fixing bacteria spread, compared to the sole application of bacteria and BBF demonstrated a promoting effect in the soil's total abundance of natural N‐fixing bacteria.

Abstract:The effects of biochar on soil properties including nutrients have been reported in previous studies, but few studies targeted on soil nitrogen. Moreover, there remains a lack of studies considering the liberation of ammonia during the ammonium (N-NH4 +) adsorption process. Our study aimed to fill this research gap. A pot incubation experiment was conducted for 84 days, with ten different soils and four rates of wood chip-based biochar (0.5, 2, 4, and 8%). Biochar's effect on soil ammonium was inconsistent and insignificant in most of the incubated soils at all biochar rates. This finding contradicted our Langmuir model, which estimated maximum ammonium adsorption capacity of biochar as 6.66 mg of N-NH4 + per g of biochar. Soil response in nitrate (N-NO3 −) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) followed a similar declining trend in all soils in both incubation periods, with the effect boosted according to the biochar application rate. The Langmuir isotherm estimated the maximum N-NO3 − adsorption capacity of our biochar as 11.3 mg g−1. Soil original properties determined amount of nitrate and DOC reduction after biochar addition. Our result also indicated poor estimation of ammonium adsorption by biochar due to the liberation of ammonia. As a result, we strongly recommend that ammonia liberation should be considered during adsorption experiments and more studies in this field.

In this work, fungal hyphae with massive microtubule structure were selected as a typical microbe precursor to prepare biochars whose catalysis capability was further evaluated by a representative reduction reaction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) using sodium borohydride as reductant. By simply increasing the nitrogen concentration in the culturing medium, the fungal hyphae derived biochars with increased nitrogen contents (2.1 wt% -> 4.3 wt%) were successfully obtained after pyrolysis, showing almost two times higher catalysis ability (4.75 x 10(-2) s(-1) -> 7.26 x 10(-2) s(-1)) towards 4-nitrophenol. The Arrhenius equation calculation further proved that the more doping of nitrogen would increase the active sites rather than altering the reaction pathway. A high surface area of 997 m(2) g(-1) at pyrolysis temperature of 800 ?C was obtained resulting from the fine microstructure of fungal hyphae. Higher pyrolysis temperature derived biochars remarkably promote their catalysis ability. These results indicated that biochars with controllable nitrogen contents can be prepared by cooperating culturing and pyrolysis processes, which pointed out an easy, rapid, scalable, and promising way to synthesis biochars with tunable functions for different applications.

Abstract:Conventional nitrogen (N) fertilizers used in crop production typically have use efficiencies of only 30 to 40%. While reduced efficiency can be a result of multiple factors (rate, placement, source), mismatched timing between N availability and N crop demand is a significant cause of reduced efficiency. This study aims to develop a biochar-based controlled release nitrogenous fertilizer (BCRNF) from relatively low-cost renewable materials to improve N availability when needed by the corn crop thus reducing N losses and improving nitrogen use efficiency. Ammonium sulfate was impregnated in biochar and then pelletized into particles. Three concentrations (3%, 6%, and 10%) of polylactic acid (PLA) solutions were used to coat the particles to produce BCRNF. The effects of different PLA concentrations on N release and physical properties of BCNRFs were investigated in both water and soil conditions. Water absorption and retention, thermal stability, and microstructures of BCRNFs were also analyzed to determine the N release mechanism of BCRNFs. The BCRNF coated by 10% and 6% of PLA both released 70% of N over 12 days in water and 25 days in soil. The biochar held 14% N that was not released into the water. However, coating with PLA, increased N holding to 16% inside BCRNF particles. The thermal properties of BCRNFs were stable under 230 °C. The PLA concentration of the coating layer significantly affected not only the N releasing time and rate but also the morphology and thermal properties of BCRNFs. Higher PLA concentrations resulted in a longer releasing time at lower N release rates. This study demonstrates that a biochar-based controlled-release nitrogen fertilizer (BCRNF) can enhance N release time and rate in both water and soil environments through the integration of biochar absorption and a PLA coating. Further development could yield a BCRNF that can optimally synchronize timing and amount of available N with crop N demand to increase N use efficiency.

Abstract:Purpose The use of excessive nitrogen (N) fertilizers usually causes soil N leaching, eutrophication, and water pollution. Nevertheless, biochars may play an important role in decreasing N losses from soil to waterways. The objectives of this study were to explore the effect of contrasting biochars on the leaching of key inorganic N species during the N transformation processes in a biochar-amended soil. Materials and methods A column leaching experiment was carried out through a soil treated with 2% ( w / w ) application rate of dead pig-derived biochar (DPB), ultrasonic-modified dead pig-derived biochar (UPB), or Platanus orientalis branch-derived biochar (POB). The DPB contained 5% N, which was much greater than that in the POB (1% N). The amount of ammonium and nitrate N (NH 4 + -N and NO 3 − -N) in the leachate samples from the soil treated with different biochars were collected and analyzed periodically. Results and discussion After 20 weeks of incubation, the cumulative NH 4 + -N leaching loss from the control treatment was 1.87, 2.00, and 2.07 times greater than that from the POB-, DPB-, and UPB-treated soils ( P < 0.05). Biochar application reduced NH 4 + -N leaching from the soil, likely because of NH 4 + ion retention and adsorption on biochar surface areas and pore spaces. The cumulative NO 3 − -N in the leachate from the biochar-amended soil was significantly lower than that of the untreated control, in the order of POB < UPB = DPB < untreated control. With the application of DPB and UPB, the cumulative inorganic N (especially NO 3 − -N) leaching loss was significantly higher by up to 50%, compared with the POB treatment ( P < 0.05). The suppression of nitrate leaching may be due to microbial N immobilization, resulting from the addition of different biochars. It is apparent that the ultrasonic modification process of DPB caused no further inhibition of inorganic N leaching from the soil via incorporating the UPB. Conclusions Despite the relatively high N concentration in the DPB, 2% of DPB dosage reduced inorganic N leaching from the amended soil. Therefore, regardless of the biochar N concentrations, biochars could be used to improve N fertilizer use efficiency by reducing N leaching loss from soils.
How Biochar Affects Nitrogen Assimilation and Dynamics by Interacting Soil and Plant Enzymatic Activities: Quantitative Assessment of 2 Years Potted Study in a Rapeseed-Soil System

Abstract:The amendment of biochar has been proposed to improve soil fertility and crop yield. However, consolidated information lacks explaining the role of biochar on soil and plant enzymatic activities involved in nutrients cycling in soil and accumulation in plants improving utilization of applied inorganic fertilizer and crop growth. In the current study, we evaluated the integral effects of biochar levels (B0:0, B15:15, B3:30, and B60:60 t ha –1 ) and nitrogen fertilizer levels (N0:0, N75:75, N225:225, and N450:450 kg ha –1 ) on soil physicochemical properties, enzymatic activities, nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) and grain yield of rapeseed for 2 years in the pots during 2020 and 2021. The findings revealed that compared to control (B0 + N0), a combination of B30 + N450 increased soil urease activity by 73 and 75%, and B60 + N450 increased activities of soil catalase by 17 and 16%, and B60 + N225 increased alkaline phosphatase by 17 and 19%, respectively, in the first and second year. Moreover, a single application of high nitrogen at 450 kg ha –1 reduced the activities of plant nitrogen metabolism-related enzymes, however; the integration of biochar at 30 t ha –1 compensated the high nitrogen toxicity and improved the activities of nitrate reductase (NR), nitrite reductase NIR, glutamate synthase (GS) and glutamine synthetase (GOGAT) at seedling stage (SS) and flowering stage (FS) in both years. The integration of biochar at 30 t ha –1 with nitrogen at 450 kg ha –1 induced synergetic effects on rapeseed growth through sorption of excessive nitrogen in soil and significantly improved the plant height up to 11 and 18%, pods plant –1 39 and 32% and grain yield plant –1 54 and 64%, respectively, during the first and second year. Moreover, biochar at 15 t ha –1 along with nitrogen at 225 kg ha –1 resulted in the highest NUE of 29% in both years suggesting that biochar can also offset the deficiency of lower nitrogen. This study highlighted the ameliorative effect of biochar suppressing high nitrogen toxicity and decreasing lower nitrogen deficiency effects on rapeseed growth by improving nitrogen use efficiency via enhancing soil conditions, enzymatic activities and soil nitrogen utilization potential and thus improving rapeseed growth and yield.

Abstract:AbstractBiochar-based fertilizers have attracted increased attention, because biochar can improve the soil fertility, promote plant growth and crop yield. However, biochar-based controlled release nitrogen fertilizers (BCRNFs) still face problems because of the high cost, inefficient production technology, instability of nitrides, and the challenge associated with the controlled release of nutrients. In this study, we hydrothermally synthesised novel BCRNFs using urea-loaded biochar, bentonite and polyvinyl alcohol for controlled release of nutrients. Scanning electron microscopy and gas adsorption were conducted to identify the urea-loading and storage of bentonite in the inner pores of the biochar particles. X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic studies demonstrated that strengthening the interactions among biochar, urea, and bentonite, helps control the moisture diffusion and penetration of bentonite, thereby leading to nutrient retention. The BCRNF showed significantly improved nutrient release characteristic compared with that of a mixture of biochar and urea. This urea-bentonite composite loaded with urea provides control over the release of nutrients stored in the biochar. BCRNF, especially those produced hydrothermally, can have potential applications in sustainable food security and green agriculture.

Abstract:The application of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar (N-biochar) is one of promising management practices recommended to improve soil fertility. A field trial based on seven treatments (control, urea, urea + biochar, KNO3, KNO3 + biochar, (NH4)(2)SO4, (NH4)(2)SO4 + biochar) were carried out in the field. Both rhizosphere and bulk soils were collected after harvest to investigate the response of microorganisms to N-biochar and the influence on N retention. The results showed that N-biochar increased total microbial biomass but did not change the relative proportions of microbial groups compared with the control. Principal component analysis suggested that microbial community structure in the rhizosphere differed from that in bulk soils, with lower ratios of G+/G- bacterial PLFAs, Saturated/Monounsaturated PLFAs and Cyclopropyl/Precursor PLFAs in the rhizosphere. More abundant biomass and better developed community structure in the rhizosphere could be ascribed to labile C from root exudates. The increased N content in soil-plant system as well as the relative high concentration of total N in the rhizosphere indicated that N-biochar benefited N retention towards near-root areas. Redundancy analysis and correlation analysis suggested that both fungi and bacteria were involved in promoting N retention, especially G- bacteria. Biochar-induced high soil pH favored G- bacteria development while the importance of labile C availability from biochar to G- bacterial activity. (c) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Biochar impacts on soil nitrogen and carbon dynamics in a Spodosol amended with biosolids and inorganic fertilizer

Abstract:Despite evidence suggesting that biochar can retain nutrients, particularly nitrogen (N), and reduce the risks of transport, research on the co-application of biochar with organic and inorganic fertilizer sources is limited. Three laboratory studies (herein referred to as static incubation, column leaching, and batch sorption) were conducted to evaluate the impacts of two biochar materials (pine and grass biochar generated at temperatures of 800 and 400°C, respectively) on N and carbon (C) dynamics in soils amended with different N sources (ammonium nitrate, Class B, and Class AA biosolids). Nitrogen sources were applied at an equivalent rate of 180 kg N ha-1 while biochar was applied at a 1% (w/w) rate. Biochar effects on soil N and C dynamics were variable and dependent on biochar and N sources. A negligible but significant effect of pine biochar in reducing NH4 leaching was observed; however, both biochar materials were ineffective in reducing NO3 or inorganic N leaching. Reductions in leachate NH4 by pine biochar were attributed to relative greater ability of this material to retain NH4 than grass biochar. Both biochar materials exhibited no ability to sorb NO3 . Similarly, biochar had no effect on soil N2 O emissions. Class B biosolids resulted in greater N leaching and soil N2 O emissions compared to other fertilizers. This response was likely due to inherently high levels of inorganic N and moisture, which possibly favored denitrification. Further research is warranted to better understand the underlying mechanisms controlling soil N and C dynamics and responses to co-application with fertilizer sources.

Abstract:Reducing the environmental issues brought on by nutrients especially nitrogen pollution and loss is important. Owing to its unique composition and physico-chemical characteristics, biomass-derived biochar exhibits varying degrees of adsorption and interception for all types of soil nutrients. Thus, a novel way to improve nutrient absorption in the soil is to include biomass derived biochar into it. Various biomass-derived biochar from locally available biobased substances was synthesized through low-cost portable charring kiln. It has been quantified the influence of four biobased substances and three pyrolysis temperature on different morphomineralogical characteristics of biochar for utilizing as low-cost sorbent to manage nutrient adsorption and retention capacity. The morphomineralogical characteristics were principally manipulated by feedstocks rather than pyrolysis temperature. Higher porosity and surface area of biomass-derived biochar illustrated its soil structural modification and nutrient retention capacity along with their utilization for adsorbents. With increase in pyrolysis temperature, the adsorption capacity of biochar for NH 4 + -N and NO 3 − -N was gradually weakened and gradually enhanced respectively. The adsorption process of ammonia nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen conformed to the Langmuir model and the fitted KL value was less than 1 indicating that the adsorption process was uniform monolayer adsorption and the adsorption of biochar was favorable adsorption. With increase in biochar application rate the leaching of NO 3 − -N decreased having higher at 2.5 t ha −1 application rate followed by 5 t ha −1 and lower at 7.5 t ha −1 . In packed soil column, the NH 4 + -N in leachate was maximum in T 7 (18.6), followed by T 4 (17.9), T 13 (17.3) and minimum in T 10 (17.2) at same application rate of manures and biochar. Finally, results also revealed that packed soil column performed better as compared with intact soil column to retain soil nutrient and hence, leaching potential of nutrient was less in packed column than intact soil column. In conclusion, biomass-derived biochar can enhance the amount of nutrient that is absorbed into the soil while decreasing the loss of nutrient from the soil in the form of ammonia and nitrate. To sum up, biomass-derived biochar can increase the adsorption amount of the nitrogen and reduce the loss of ammonia nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen in the soil, thus retaining the nitrogen.
