Abstract:Integrated Energy System (IES) is a key component of energy internet, which has made great progress in multi-energy supplementation, energy conservation and emission reduction. IEC 61499 standard and OPC UA communication are powerful cyber-physical system technologies for dynamic reconfiguration, interoperability, and integrability. In this paper, we propose a modular design and development approach for IES, based on the reconfiguration-supporting distributed architecture of IEC 61499. For data integration and transmission, we use OPC UA on the communication level to support multiple devices and communication protocols. The program design is implemented on an IEC 61499 compliant software platform. We build a photovoltaic simulation system with real-time electric meter data acquisition through an OPC UA gateway device. Experimental and simulation results show that the proposed approach is effective in realizing a unified, robust and efficient integrated energy control system.

Abstract:An AMR(Automatic Meter Reading) system is used to automatically collect data from meters. In this paper we design and implement a Wireless Automatic Meter Reading System to solve the problem in existing AMR system. The system consists of wireless modules, measure meters and management center. A general wireless module, is developed to transfer the data gotten from traditional analogue meters or digital meters by using ZigBee communication network. We describe a system framework including the hardware of wireless module and software design of data acquisition. We also develop the operator interface on management center. Finally, we build up a Wireless Automatic voltage Meter Reading System as a case study. The proposed system has board application foreground in industry.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for electrical data analysis, close proximity of computational resources to the terminal side has become a priority in modern power systems considering extant weaknesses with regard to operational efficiency, data security and the increasing burden of the cloud. Nevertheless, smart meters lacks local resources as modern terminals of smart grids. On the other hand, the alternative solutions based on edge computing may be inadequate in flexibility. To this end, a device aiming to enable terminal-side intelligence for smart meters is proposed in this work. First the functional design of the device is elaborated and a prototype of it is then introduced. Finally, two typical applications of this device are illustrated respectively. In addition to the traditional functions of smart meters, the proposed device is endowed with the capability of local computing whereby it has broad application prospects in the future.
A Measurement-based Analysis of the Energy Consumption of Data Center Servers

Abstract:Energy consumption is a growing issue in data centers, impacting their economic viability and their public image. In this work we empirically characterize the power and energy consumed by different types of servers. In particular, in order to understand the behavior of their energy and power consumption, we perform measurements in different servers. In each of them, we exhaustively measure the power consumed by the CPU, the disk, and the network interface under different configurations, identifying the optimal operational levels. One interesting conclusion of our study is that the curve that defines the minimal CPU power as a function of the load is neither linear nor purely convex as has been previously assumed. Moreover, we find that the efficiency of the various server components can be maximized by tuning the CPU frequency and the number of active cores as a function of the system and network load, while the block size of I/O operations should be always maximized by applications. We also show how to estimate the energy consumed by an application as a function of some simple parameters, like the CPU load, and the disk and network activity. We validate the proposed approach by accurately estimating the energy of a map-reduce computation in a Hadoop platform.

Abstract:Detailed knowledge about the electrical power consumption in industrial production environments is a prerequisite to reduce and optimize their power consumption. Today's industrial production sites are equipped with a variety of sensors that, inter alia, monitor electrical power consumption in detail. However, these environments often lack an automated data collation and analysis. We present a system architecture that integrates different sensors and analyzes and visualizes the power consumption of devices, machines, and production plants. It is designed with a focus on scalability to support production environments of various sizes and to handle varying loads. We argue that a scalable architecture in this context must meet requirements for fault tolerance, extensibility, real-time data processing, and resource efficiency. As a solution, we propose a microservice-based architecture augmented by big data and stream processing techniques. Applying the fog computing paradigm, parts of it are deployed in an elastic, central cloud while other parts run directly, decentralized in the production environment. A prototype implementation of this architecture presents solutions how different kinds of sensors can be integrated and their measurements can be continuously aggregated. In order to make analyzed data comprehensible, it features a single-page web application that provides different forms of data visualization. We deploy this pilot implementation in the data center of a medium-sized enterprise, where we successfully monitor the power consumption of 16~servers. Furthermore, we show the scalability of our architecture with 20,000~simulated sensors.

Abstract:Energy consumption constraints on computing systems are more important than ever. Maintenance costs for high performance systems are limiting the applicability of processing devices with large dissipation power. New solutions are needed to increase both the computation capability and the power efficiency. Moreover, energy efficient applications should balance performance vs. consumption. Therefore power data of components are important. This work presents the most remarkable alternatives to measure the power consumption of different types of computing systems, describing the advantages and limitations of available power measurement systems. Finally, a methodology is proposed to select the right power consumption measurement system taking into account precision of the measure, scalability and controllability of the acquisition system.

Abstract:In response to the problems of large communication data volume, few communication methods and high communication costs in current electric energy information collection systems, the paper designs an electric energy information collection system based on uC/OS embedded real-time operating system. The system collects the data in the electricity meter downlink according to the parameters set by the host computer. After the data is compressed by the data collection terminal, it is transmitted to the main station through remote communication technology, which is convenient for the staff to monitor and manage the energy data. In this paper, LZO lossless compression technology and run-length coding technology are combined to improve the data compression scheme and use the RSA encryption algorithm to encrypt and calculate the data and use the touch-type fully intelligent combination interference generator PRM61245B to conduct EMC testing on the power information collection terminal. The experimental results show that the power system data acquisition system proposed in this paper can effectively improve the data transmission rate while ensuring data security, and can operate stably under the influence of external interference factors. Through a series of experimental tests, the practicability and effectiveness of the system are verified.

Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are pervading different application domains by relying on sensing and actuating devices that share, process and present meaningful real-world information. One of the most important of these domains is certainly the Smart Grid (SG), where the use of advanced measurement and control equipment and the diffusion of communication technologies are making an adaptive, reliable, and efficient management of the energy possible, with several new applications. In this scenario, this paper focuses on one of the major IoT features, which is the virtualization, and proposes an IoT solution for wide area measurement systems where virtualized phasor measurement resources are introduced. Such a solution is intended to make a programmable and smart environment fostering interoperability, reusability and flexibility of SG services. The performance of the system is evaluated for both the traffic generated and the latency to understand which scenarios can benefit from its deployment.

Abstract:In recent years, a number of major improvements were introduced in the area of computer networks, energy-efficient network protocols, and network management systems. Software-defined networking (SDN) as a new paradigm for managing complex networks brings a significant opportunity to reduce the energy consumption among ICT. In this paper, we are tackling improvements in the process of monitoring the states of the networking devices and optimizing the existing solutions. We are monitoring the energy consumption of a network architecture and augment the retrieved raw power data to detect changes in the state of the devices. The goal is to benchmark the difference between the power data fetched from the real measures and the data extracted from the power models, translated as the expected behavior of the devices. An application is designed to monitor and analyze the retrieved power data of a simulated ICT infrastructure composed of Cisco switches and routers, Dell Precision stations, and Raritan PDUs. Moreover, smart algorithms are developed which outcome results with detection of changes in the state of the devices, as well as with detection and isolation of possible anomalies and their impact on the energy consumption. The application is envisioned to be an extension to the existing SDN controllers for monitoring and reporting the changes in the state of the ICT devices.

Abstract:This article presents a hybrid acdc system constructed by multiport energy routers (MERs), which have potential application prospects in future energy Internet. Two typical types of MER in the system are studied, and the selected main circuits are easy to realize multiple forms of power supply with high reliability, plug-and-play access of distributed generations, and high expansibility of power ports. The corresponding control and protection systems are developed to ensure the regular operation of MERs, and a smart energy management scheme is presented for the power flow management of MERs to meet the expectations of power consumers. Two MER prototypes are implemented, of which the experimental results validate the correctness of parameter design and the effectiveness of the control and energy management strategies, showing the satisfactory performance of MERs.

Abstract:The article describes the design of an Internet of Things based platform having as main objective the real-time management of energy consumption in water resource recovery facilities and their integration in a future demand side management environment. The monitoring of several electrical parameters, including energy consumption, is done via a dedicated energy meter, whose design is detailed in the article. The high level data communication from the energy meters to a central platform of the wastewater utility is done via the MQTT protocol. Within the water resource recovery facility, the access network is based either on Wi-Fi or LoRa, which are two enabling technologies for the Internet of Things. The meters are deployed in pilot demonstrators located in two water resource recovery facilities in Lisbon, Portugal.

Abstract:This paper describes the development and experimental characterization of a real-time, low-cost, wireless AC monitoring system based on ATmega 328P-PU microcontroller. The proposed system is composed by a main brain for the acquisition and the processing of the data measured by smart meters. From the experimental tests discussed in this work it is demonstrated that the proposed system can monitor, with adequate accuracy, the working cycles of electrical loads in order to evaluate its energy consumption.

Abstract:Developing a low-cost wireless energy meter with power quality measurements for smart grid applications represents a significant advance in efficient and accurate electric energy monitoring. In increasingly complex and interconnected electric systems, this device will be essential for a wide range of applications, such as smart grids, by introducing a real-time energy monitoring system. In light of this, smart meters can offer greater opportunities for sustainable and efficient energy use and improve the utilization of energy sources, especially those that are nonrenewable. According to the 2020 International Energy Agency (IEA) report, nonrenewable energy sources represent 65% of the global supply chain. The smart meter developed in this work is based on the ESP32 microcontroller and easily accessible components since it includes a user-friendly development platform that offers a cost-effective solution while ensuring reliable performance. The main objective of developing the smart meters was to enhance the software and simplify the hardware. Unlike traditional meters that calculate electrical parameters by means of complex circuits in hardware, this project performed the calculations directly on the microcontroller. This procedure reduced the complexity of the hardware by simplifying the meter design. Owing to the high-performance processing capability of the microcontroller, efficient and accurate calculations of electrical parameters could be achieved without the need for additional circuits. This software-driven approach with simplified hardware led to benefits, such as reduced production costs, lower energy consumption, and a meter with improved accuracy, as well as updates on flexibility. Furthermore, the integrated wireless connectivity in the microcontroller enables the collected data to be transmitted to remote monitoring systems for later analysis. The innovative feature of this smart meter lies in the fact that it has readily available components, along with the ESP32 chip, which results in a low-cost smart meter with performance that is comparable to other meters available on the market. Moreover, it is has the capacity to incorporate IoT and artificial intelligence applications. The developed smart meter is cost effective and energy efficient, and offers benefits with regard to flexibility, and thus represents an innovative, efficient, and versatile solution for smart grid applications.

Abstract:Summary In this paper, the problematic of power metering is targeted. Places with shared power sources, where electricity usage is calculated equally according to the number of users, are often misused by single users for illegitimate power usage. Special wireless sensor network was developed and implemented in a scenario of multi‐store parking garage to solve this problem. This paper is an extended version of the paper published in the iNetSApp'15 section of the FedCSIS 2015 IEEE international conference. Abstract:Electrical energy management, or demand-side management (DSM), in a smart grid is very important for electrical energy savings. With the high penetration rate of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in modern society, IoT-oriented electrical energy management systems (EMSs) in DSM are capable of skillfully monitoring the energy consumption of electrical appliances. While many of today's IoT devices used in EMSs take advantage of cloud analytics, IoT manufacturers and application developers are devoting themselves to novel IoT devices developed at the edge of the Internet. In this study, a smart autonomous time and frequency analysis current sensor-based power meter prototype, a novel IoT end device, in an edge analytics-based artificial intelligence (AI) across IoT (AIoT) architecture launched with cloud analytics is developed. The prototype has assembled hardware and software to be developed over fog-cloud analytics for DSM in a smart grid. Advanced AI well trained offline in cloud analytics is autonomously and automatically deployed onsite on the prototype as edge analytics at the edge of the Internet for online load identification in DSM. In this study, auto-labeling, or online load identification, of electrical appliances monitored by the developed prototype in the launched edge analytics-based AIoT architecture is experimentally demonstrated. As the proof-of-concept demonstration of the prototype shows, the methodology in this study is feasible and workable.

Abstract:The monitoring of power consumption and the forecasting of load profiles for residential appliances are essential aspects of the control of energy savings/exchanges at multiple hierarchical levels: house, house cluster, neighborhood, and city. External environmental factors (weather conditions) and inhabitants' behavior influence power consumption, and their usage as part of forecasting activity may lead to added value in the estimation of daily-load profiles. This paper proposes a distributed sensing infrastructure for supporting the following tasks: the monitoring of appliances' power consumption, the monitoring of environmental parameters, the generation of records for a database that can be used for both identifying load models and testing load-scheduling algorithms, and the real-time acquisition of consumption data. The hardware/software codesign of an integrated architecture that can combine the typical distributed sensing and control networks present in modern buildings (targeting user comfort) with energy-monitoring and management systems is presented. Methods for generating simplified piecewise linear (PWL) representations of the load profiles based on these records are introduced and their benefits compared with classic averaged representations are demonstrated for the case of peak-shaving strategies. The proposed approach is validated through implementing and testing a smart-meter node with wireless communication and other wired/wireless embedded modules, enabling the tight integration of the energy-monitoring system into smart-home/building-automation systems. The ability of this node to process power measurements with a programable granularity level (seconds/minutes/hours) at the edge level and stream the processed measurement results at the selected granularity to the cloud is identified as a valuable feature for a large range of applications (model identification, power saving, prediction).

Abstract:Increased adoption and deployment of phasor measurement units (PMU) has provided valuable fine-grained data over the grid. Analysis over these data can provide insight into the health of the grid, thereby improving control over operations. Realizing this data-driven control, however, requires validating, processing and storing massive amounts of PMU data. This paper describes a PMU data management system that supports input from multiple PMU data streams, features an event-detection algorithm, and provides an efficient method for retrieving archival data. The event-detection algorithm rapidly correlates multiple PMU data streams, providing details on events occurring within the power system. The event-detection algorithm feeds into a visualization component, allowing operators to recognize events as they occur. The indexing and data retrieval mechanism facilitates fast access to archived PMU data. Using this method, we achieved over 30x speedup for queries with high selectivity. With the development of these two components, we have developed a system that allows efficient analysis of multiple time-aligned PMU data streams.

Abstract:For the problem that the on-site operation and maintenance of power information collection has no unified standard and lack of technical means, the overall design scheme of the smart checking device for multi-function meter data collection fault is proposed. The carrier module card circuit and system software architecture are designed, and the design principle of the device is analyzed. The fault detection and discrimination methods of carrier module based on online and offline modes are proposed. The fault detection and discrimination methods of field meter and concentrator communication port are proposed. A portable and fully functional field acquisition fault diagnosis and analysis device is developed, which can effectively improve the work efficiency and technical level of on-site operation and maintenance personnel, and plays an important role in promoting the standardization and intelligence of on-site collection and maintenance work.
