Abstract:This paper presents an adaptive Distribution System State Estimation (DSSE) which relies on a Cloud-based IoT paradigm. The methodology is adaptive in terms of the rate of execution of the estimation process which varies depending on the indications of the distributed measurement system. The system is composed, in particular, of Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). PMUs are virtualized with respect to the physical devices and the corresponding virtualizing modules run in the communication network edge (i.e. closer to the physical objects). PMUs are set at a higher measurement rate, while the estimation process works at a given slower rate, for example once per second, in normal operative conditions. A local decision algorithm implemented in the virtualized module, monitors the measured quantities in order to detect and address possible unexpected dynamics. In particular, different metrics can be applied: the variations and the trend of variation of the rms voltage values, but also the Rate Of Change Of Frequency (ROCOF) of the monitored signals can be used to trigger rate variation in the <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://DSSE.In" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> case dynamics are detected, the measurement data is sent to the DSSE at higher rates and the estimation process runs consequently on a finer time scale. In the considered system only application level entities are located in the Cloud, thus allowing to obtain a bandwidth-efficient and smart data transmission. The results obtained on a 13-bus systems prove the goodness of the proposed methodologies.

Abstract:Distribution systems are evolving into active networks due to the high penetration of distributed generation in recent years. Micro Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) is capable of providing super-fast and accurate synchronised phasor measurements, and eligible for distribution networks applications. This paper introduces a project aiming to develop a PMU based monitoring system for distribution networks. In this project, parallel computation method is proposed for big data screening, gathering and processing. This paper takes linear state estimation as an example to show the improvement of parallel computation on big data processing.

Abstract:Deregulation of energy markets, penetration of renewables, advanced metering capabilities, and the urge for situational awareness, all call for system-wide power system state estimation (PSSE). Implementing a centralized estimator though is practically infeasible due to the complexity scale of an interconnection, the communication bottleneck in real-time monitoring, regional disclosure policies, and reliability issues. In this context, distributed PSSE methods are treated here under a unified and systematic framework. A novel algorithm is developed based on the alternating direction method of multipliers. It leverages existing PSSE solvers, respects privacy policies, exhibits low communication load, and its convergence to the centralized estimates is guaranteed even in the absence of local observability. Beyond the conventional least-squares based PSSE, the decentralized framework accommodates a robust state estimator. By exploiting interesting links to the compressive sampling advances, the latter jointly estimates the state and identifies corrupted measurements. The novel algorithms are numerically evaluated using the IEEE 14-, 118-bus, and a 4,200-bus benchmarks. Simulations demonstrate that the attainable accuracy can be reached within a few inter-area exchanges, while largest residual tests are outperformed.

Abstract:Dynamic state and parameter estimation (DSE) plays a key role for reliably monitoring and operating future, power-electronics-dominated power systems. While DSE is a very active research field, experimental applications of proposed algorithms to real-world systems remain scarce. This motivates the present paper, in which we demonstrate the effectiveness of a DSE algorithm previously presented by parts of the authors with real-world data collected by a Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) at a substation close to a power plant within the extra-high voltage grid of Germany. To this end, at first we derive a suitable mapping of the real-world PMU-measurements recorded at a substation close to the power plant to the terminal bus of the power plants' synchronous generator (SG). This mapping considers the high-voltage (HV) transmission line, the tap-changing transformer and the auxiliary system of the power plant. Next, we introduce several practically motivated extensions to the estimation algorithm, which significantly improve its practical performance with real-world measurements. Finally, we successfully validate the algorithm experimentally in an auto- as well as a cross-validation.

Abstract:The challenges facing active distribution networks have highlighted the position of the distribution system state estimation (DSSE) process in the distribution management systems as its most important function. Here, regarding the extensive scale of distribution networks and the weaknesses of centralized methods, the decentralized implementation of the DSSE process has received considerable attention. However, predefined network partitioning is supposed in previous works and zone size effects on the performance of the DSSE process have not been assessed. In response, a method for finding the optimal number of network zones and their size is proposed here. For this purpose, initially, an algorithm is used to partition the network into all possible configurations with different sizes. Subsequently, performance metrics affected by zone sizes, such as execution time, accuracy of the DSSE results, and reliability in achieving the results at the control centre, are modelled. Finally, by applying the decentralized DSSE method across all partitioning scenarios and calculating performance metrics, the most efficient and cost‐effective partitioning scenario can be identified. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated using the modified 77‐bus UK distribution network as an active test case, and the findings are subsequently presented and analysed.

Abstract:The increase in renewable energy sources (RESs) in distribution grids is a major driver for achieving green energy goals worldwide. However, RES power inverters affect power quality, increase power losses, and, in certain cases, may cause power interruptions due to harmonics, deterioration of the rate of change of frequency, and inability to rapidly react in grid faults. Today, phasor measurement units (PMUs) are the ultimate tools for real-time monitoring of distribution grids’ health, and they enable several data-driven added-value services such as fast and automated fault detection, isolation, and recovery; state estimation; power quality monitoring; dynamic events analysis, etc. The present paper proposes an open hardware and software PMU platform, which is low cost, high performance, expandable, and, in general, suitable for research and innovation activities. The system is based on two processor modules (a digital signal processor from Texas Instruments TMS320c5517, and a microprocessor System-in-Package from Octavo Systems OSD3358), two local databases of 64 Gbytes each, GPS module, 5G modem interface, as well as analog and signal conditioning circuits to interface three-phase power voltage and current signals. The entire hardware design, schematics, and instrumentation components, as well as all firmware and software functions are completely open source. Pilot operation of the prototype design has been installed in three medium-/low-voltage substations in Cyprus, as well as twelve substations in Spain and Italy.

Abstract:State estimation (SE) is indispensable for the situa-tional awareness of power systems. Conventional SE is fed by measurements collected from the supervisory control and data ac-quisition (SCADA) system. In recent years, available data sources have been greatly enriched with the deployment of phasor meas-urement units (PMUs), advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), intelligent electronic devices (IEDs), etc. The integration of multi-ple data sources provides unprecedented opportunities for en-hancing the performance of SE, but also presents major challenges to resolve, including optimal multi-type-sensor co-placement, mul-tiple reporting rates and asynchronization, diverse types of meas-ured quantities, correlations between measurements, integration of online and historical data sources, and system and measurement uncertainties. This paper outlines the state of the art and research opportunities in this area by providing a comprehensive literature review and extensive discussions. It starts by presenting the moti-vations and challenges, followed by a summary of existing data sources for SE in power systems. Subsequently, for both transmis-sion system (static and dynamic) and distribution system SE, ex-isting methods are systematically reviewed and categorized based on the addressed challenges. Interesting attempts of using novel measurements in SE are also studied. Finally, the paper concludes by providing a detailed discussion on the remaining research gaps and future research directions to be explored.

Abstract:Electrical energy management, or demand-side management (DSM), in a smart grid is very important for electrical energy savings. With the high penetration rate of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm in modern society, IoT-oriented electrical energy management systems (EMSs) in DSM are capable of skillfully monitoring the energy consumption of electrical appliances. While many of today's IoT devices used in EMSs take advantage of cloud analytics, IoT manufacturers and application developers are devoting themselves to novel IoT devices developed at the edge of the Internet. In this study, a smart autonomous time and frequency analysis current sensor-based power meter prototype, a novel IoT end device, in an edge analytics-based artificial intelligence (AI) across IoT (AIoT) architecture launched with cloud analytics is developed. The prototype has assembled hardware and software to be developed over fog-cloud analytics for DSM in a smart grid. Advanced AI well trained offline in cloud analytics is autonomously and automatically deployed onsite on the prototype as edge analytics at the edge of the Internet for online load identification in DSM. In this study, auto-labeling, or online load identification, of electrical appliances monitored by the developed prototype in the launched edge analytics-based AIoT architecture is experimentally demonstrated. As the proof-of-concept demonstration of the prototype shows, the methodology in this study is feasible and workable.

Abstract:Energy theft has been a serious and long existing problem facing by many power utilities. The implementation of Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) provides power companies with new means for energy theft detection. As fundamental equipment of AMI, smart meters collect interval measurements from customer sites and thus provide system wide visibility for power companies. Leveraging both AMI and SCADA measurements, this paper puts forward an integrated distribution state estimation method for medium-voltage and low-voltage distribution network. Numerical studies show that the proposed approach can achieve a higher accuracy level for estimation. Furthermore, an energy theft detection method is proposed based on "weight-dropped polling" integrated distribution state estimation. Simulations show that it can deliver promising results comparing with conventional state estimation methods.

Abstract:<p>The day-to-day increased usage of power appliance by consumers is a growing concern in the energy sector, which creates an imbalance in the ratio of demand and supply. Demand-side energy management is an imperative tool to avoid significant deficiency from the supply end and improve energy efficiency. The trend in energy management lays focus on reducing the overall cost of electricity without limiting the consumption counterpart by instead choosing to reduce the power consumption during peak hours. The above issue seeks for design and development of a flexible and portable system to cover a wide variety of consumers for balancing the overall system. The design of smart energy management system is intended to replace the scenario of a complete power outage in a region with partial load shedding in a controlled manner as per the consumer's preference. Demonstration of experimental work is carried out assuming demand response event and also, considering the maximum demand limit constraint with different cases and changing the order of priority assigned to an appliance. Cost optimization algorithms based on time of usage and user comfort level with sensory information features are embedded within SEMS. Reliable ZigBee communication for home area network is established and also, an IoT environment is developed for data storage and analytics.</p>

Abstract:Internet of Things (IoT) technologies are pervading different application domains by relying on sensing and actuating devices that share, process and present meaningful real-world information. One of the most important of these domains is certainly the Smart Grid (SG), where the use of advanced measurement and control equipment and the diffusion of communication technologies are making an adaptive, reliable, and efficient management of the energy possible, with several new applications. In this scenario, this paper focuses on one of the major IoT features, which is the virtualization, and proposes an IoT solution for wide area measurement systems where virtualized phasor measurement resources are introduced. Such a solution is intended to make a programmable and smart environment fostering interoperability, reusability and flexibility of SG services. The performance of the system is evaluated for both the traffic generated and the latency to understand which scenarios can benefit from its deployment.
Secure Distributed Dynamic State Estimation in Wide-Area Smart Grids

Abstract:Smart grid is a large complex network with a myriad of vulnerabilities, usually operated in adversarial settings and regulated based on estimated system states. In this study, we propose a novel highly secure distributed dynamic state estimation mechanism for wide-area (multi-area) smart grids, composed of geographically separated subregions, each supervised by a local control center. We firstly propose a distributed state estimator assuming regular system operation, that achieves near-optimal performance based on the local Kalman filters and with the exchange of necessary information between local centers. To enhance the security, we further propose to (i) protect the network database and the network communication channels against attacks and data manipulations via a blockchain (BC)-based system design, where the BC operates on the peer-to-peer network of local centers, (ii) locally detect the measurement anomalies in real-time to eliminate their effects on the state estimation process, and (iii) detect misbehaving (hacked/faulty) local centers in real-time via a distributed trust management scheme over the network. We provide theoretical guarantees regarding the false alarm rates of the proposed detection schemes, where the false alarms can be easily controlled. Numerical studies illustrate that the proposed mechanism offers reliable state estimation under regular system operation, timely and accurate detection of anomalies, and good state recovery performance in case of anomalies.

Abstract:<p>Demand‐side management comprises a portfolio of actions on the consumers' side to ensure reliable power indices from the electrical system. The home energy management system (HEMS) is used to manage the consumption and production of energy in smart homes. However, the technology of HEMS architecture can be used for the detection and classification of power quality disturbances. This paper presents low‐voltage metering hardware that uses an ARM Cortex M4 and real‐time operating system to detect and classify power quality disturbances. In the context of HEMS, the proposed metering infrastructure can be used as a smart meter, which provides the service of power quality monitoring. For this type of application, there is a need to ensure that the development of this device has an acceptable cost, which is one of the reasons for the choice of an ARM microprocessor. However, managing a wide range of operations (data acquisition, data preprocessing, disturbance detection and classification, energy consumption, and data exchange) is a complex task and, consequently, requires the optimization of the embedded software. To overcome this difficulty, the use of a real‐time operating system provided by Texas Instruments (called TI‐RTOS) is proposed with the objective of managing operations at the hardware level. Thus, a methodology with low computational cost has been defined and embedded. The proposed approach uses a preprocessing stage to extract some features that are used as inputs to detect and classify disturbances. In this way, it was possible to evaluate and demonstrate the performance of the embedded algorithm when applied to synthetic and real power quality signals. Consequently, it is noted that the results are significant in the analysis of power quality in a smart grid scenario, as the smart meter offers low cost and high accuracy in both detecting (an accuracy rate above 90%) and classifying (an average accuracy rate above 94%) disturbances.</p>

Abstract:Developing a low-cost wireless energy meter with power quality measurements for smart grid applications represents a significant advance in efficient and accurate electric energy monitoring. In increasingly complex and interconnected electric systems, this device will be essential for a wide range of applications, such as smart grids, by introducing a real-time energy monitoring system. In light of this, smart meters can offer greater opportunities for sustainable and efficient energy use and improve the utilization of energy sources, especially those that are nonrenewable. According to the 2020 International Energy Agency (IEA) report, nonrenewable energy sources represent 65% of the global supply chain. The smart meter developed in this work is based on the ESP32 microcontroller and easily accessible components since it includes a user-friendly development platform that offers a cost-effective solution while ensuring reliable performance. The main objective of developing the smart meters was to enhance the software and simplify the hardware. Unlike traditional meters that calculate electrical parameters by means of complex circuits in hardware, this project performed the calculations directly on the microcontroller. This procedure reduced the complexity of the hardware by simplifying the meter design. Owing to the high-performance processing capability of the microcontroller, efficient and accurate calculations of electrical parameters could be achieved without the need for additional circuits. This software-driven approach with simplified hardware led to benefits, such as reduced production costs, lower energy consumption, and a meter with improved accuracy, as well as updates on flexibility. Furthermore, the integrated wireless connectivity in the microcontroller enables the collected data to be transmitted to remote monitoring systems for later analysis. The innovative feature of this smart meter lies in the fact that it has readily available components, along with the ESP32 chip, which results in a low-cost smart meter with performance that is comparable to other meters available on the market. Moreover, it is has the capacity to incorporate IoT and artificial intelligence applications. The developed smart meter is cost effective and energy efficient, and offers benefits with regard to flexibility, and thus represents an innovative, efficient, and versatile solution for smart grid applications.

Abstract:Purpose The current and modern electrical distribution networks, named smart grids (SGs), use advanced technologies to accomplish all the technical and nontechnical challenges naturally demanded by energy applications. Energy metering collecting is one of these challenges ranging from the most basic (i.e., visual assessment) to the expensive advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) using intelligent meters networks. The AMIs' data acquisition and system monitoring environment require enhancing some routine tasks. This paper aims to propose a methodology that uses a distributed and sustainable approach to manage wide-range metering networks, focused on using current public or private telecommunication infrastructure, optimizing the implementation and operation, increasing reliability and decreasing costs. Design/methodology/approach Inspired by blockchain technology, a collaborative metering system architecture is conceived, managing massive data sets collected from the grid. The use of cryptography handles data integrity and security issues. Findings A robust proof-of-concept simulation results are presented concerning the resilience and performance of the proposed distributed remote metering system. Originality/value The methodology proposed in this work is an innovative AMI solution related to SGs. Regardless of the implementation, operation and maintenance of AMIs, the proposed solution is unique, using legacy and new technologies together in a reliable way.

Abstract:This paper studies a privacy-preserving distributed state estimation (SE) problem in smart grid systems with an AC power flow model. To enhance the precision of SE, a sensor data fusion approach is employed to integrate the sampled data from supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and phasor measurement units (PMUs). Then, through iterative information exchange among local and neighboring areas, all interconnected areas can achieve consensus on unbiased estimations while avoiding the issue of excessively large data dimensionality caused by centralized data acquisition. In addition, the proposed approach combines with the average consensus algorithm, significantly reducing the computational burden and enabling real-time distributed SE, and the incorporation of differential privacy further mitigates potential privacy leakage risks during the information transmission process. Simulation results on IEEE 14-bus and IEEE 118-bus systems demonstrate that the proposed approach not only achieves excellent estimation accuracy but also significantly reduces the convergence time, while maintaining enhanced the capability of privacy-preserving.

Abstract:According to the features of the data acquired from supervisory control and data acquisition(SCADA) and phasor measurement unit(PMU) respectively,a wide-area real-time dynamic state estimation method for whole power grid based on hybrid SCADA/PMU measurement is proposed.The proposed method fully utilizes the interrelationship among voltage variations of different buses,by means of the initial states from SCADA and the data measured by the buses where PMUs are installed,the voltage phasors of the buses where PMUs are not installed can be simply obtained.With the proposed method,dynamic processes in power grid can be effectively observed while the configuration of PMUs is insufficient.The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method are verified by simulation of various faults set up in New England 10-machine 39-bus system.
Design and Evaluation of Low Voltage Neural Network-Based State Estimators in Scenarios With Minimal Measurement Infrastructure

Abstract:Learning-based state estimators can represent a cost-effective opportunity for distribution system operators to perform grid monitoring and control in low-voltage grids where the measuring infrastructure is minimal, if not absent. This study lays the foundation for designing and evaluating neural network-based state estimators for low-voltage radial distribution grids. A simulation-based methodology is proposed for generating synthetic training data-sets relying only on minimal grid data. Additionally, a novel framework for performance analysis of low voltage learning-based state estimators is considered, which relies on a bi-dimensional evaluation of the absolute error and the parallel observation of relative metrics. The applicability and potential of these estimators have been tested and validated through various low-voltage radial case studies, showing promising results especially for large distribution grids. Finally, a propagation error study has been conducted to observe how these estimators handle errors in input measurements.

Abstract:The integrated renewable energy resources (RERs) based smart grid in the power distribution network (PDN) has financial and ecological benefits. However, the emergence of RER-based microgrids and substations without real-time monitoring of their power parameters leads to various challenges in the PDN, such as suboptimal resource allocation, poor load management, grid instability, and lack of real-time decision-making capabilities. To mitigate these challenges, increase the system's visibility, and make efficient decisions, intelligent monitoring and control system is required for both smart grid and power substation. This proposed study develops IoT-based monitoring and control of power substations and associated distributed smart grids to make effective decisions of integration/segregation into the PDN. The proposed IoT-based integration/segregation of smart grids and load management can mitigate the stated challenges effectively. Using the HOMER Grid®, the research also investigates the annualized power production pattern of smart grids and the power consumption pattern of integrated loads to enable proactive decisions about energy management. The proposed study implements IoT technology for power parameters monitoring of substations and smart grids for their effective use, as it considers four types of load management, including industrial, domestic, commercial, and electric vehicles, with the aid of IoT technology to avoid power fluctuations and contingencies. Effective load management has been adopted based on annualized energy consumption, load patterns and real-time monitoring, and active decisions making. The results highlight that the proposed IoT-based approach helps advance smart grid integration into the PDN and enhance energy load management, consequently reducing energy costs and suppressing carbon emissions. The validation of the proposed model is verified by the constructed prototype, where the achieved real-time monitoring and control of power substations and smart grids into PDN is performed to make effective decisions related to energy and load management. Moreover, it effectively allows power distribution companies to manage loads during high demand or crises and enhances grid stability and energy efficiency.
