The influence of haemodialysis on haemodynamic measurements using transpulmonary thermodilution in patients with septic shock: an observational study

Abstract:Context Patients with sepsis frequently present with acute renal failure requiring intermittent renal replacement therapy and haemodynamic monitoring. To date, the effect of haemodialysis on PiCCO monitoring has not been determined. Objective To determine the effect of haemodialysis on the measurement of haemodynamic variables using transpulmonary thermodilution. Design Prospective observational study. Setting Medical ICU in a university hospital. Patients Thirty patients with sepsis and acute renal failure undergoing intermittent haemodialysis. Interventions None. Main outcome measures Cardiac index, global end-diastolic volume index and extravascular lung water index measured with or without haemodialysis. Results Significant correlations were found for all variables measured with and without haemodialysis (r = 0.55 to 0.91, P < 0.01). Measurements of cardiac index without and with haemodialysis were significantly different [4.71 vs. 4.18 l min−1 m−2, difference −0.54 (SD 0.70), 95% confidence interval (CI) −0.80 to −0.28; P < 0.01], as were values of global end-diastolic volume index without and with haemodialysis [864.8 vs. 775.3 ml m−2, difference −89.5 (SD 191.8), 95% CI −161.2 to −17.9; P = 0.02]. Measurements of extravascular lung water index without and with haemodialysis did not differ significantly [10.3 vs. 10.0 ml kg−1, difference −0.3 (SD 2.0), 95% CI −1.1 to 0.5; P = 0.42]. Conclusion Although significant correlations were found for cardiac index, global end-diastolic volume index and extravascular lung water index with and without haemodialysis, cardiac index and global end-diastolic volume index were significantly reduced during haemodialysis, but not extravascular lung water index, when measured by the PiCCO system in patients with septic shock. Although differences were small, the variability of within-patient differences may be clinically important and care should be taken in relying solely on such measurements.

Biosynthesis and Characterization of Magnesium Oxide and Manganese Dioxide Nanoparticles Using Matricaria Chamomilla L. Extract and Its Inhibitory Effect on Acidovorax Oryzae Strain RS-2

Abstract:Abstract Bacterial brown stripe (BBS) is one of the most economically important diseases of rice caused by Acidovorax oryzae (Ao). In order to ensure food security and safe consumption, the use of non-chemical approach is necessary. In this study, MgO and MnO2 were synthesized using chamomile flower extract. The synthesized MgO and MnO2 nanoparticles were characterized by UV–Visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission/scanning electron microscopy. The sizes were 18.2 and 16.5 nm for MgO and MnO2 nanoparticles, respectively. The MgO and MnO2 nanoparticles reduced the growth of Ao strain RS-2 by 62.9 and 71.3%, respectively. Also, the biofilm formation and swimming motility were significantly reduced compared to the control. The antibacterial mechanisms of MgO and MnO2 nanoparticles against RS-2 reveals that MgO and MnO2 nanoparticles penetrated the cells and destroyed the cell membrane leading to leakage of cytoplasmic content. Also, the flow cytometry observation reveals that the apoptotic cell ratio of RS-2 increased from 0.97% to 99.52 and 99.94% when treated with MgO and MnO2 nanoparticles, respectively. Altogether, the results suggest that the synthesized MgO and MnO2 nanoparticles could serve as an alternative approach method for the management of BBS.
Antibacterial potential of green magnesium oxide nanoparticles against rice pathogen Acidovorax oryzae

Abstract:Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) have emerged as effective antibacterial agents with unique physiochemical properties. Here, we report antibacterial activity of MgONPs produced by using Acinetobacter johnsonii strain RTN1 against rice pathogen Acidovorax oryzae for the first time. The physico-chemical and optical properties of biogenic MgONPs were elucidated by using UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, XRD, EDS, SEM, and TEM. Biogenic MgONPs showed substantial antibacterial activity (35.2 +/- 0.61 mm zone of inhibition) against A. oryzae at 20 mg mL(-1) and significantly reduced cell density (80.83% MIC at OD600) of pathogen in broth culture. The ultrastructure studies revealed the morphological disruptions in MgONPs-treated A. oryzae cells as compared to control. Hence, the MgONPs could be used to formulate a potent nanopesticide for A. oryzae. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Recently, the use of herbs in the agriculture and food industry has increased significantly. In particular, Rosmarinus officinalis L. extracts have been reported to have strong antibacterial properties, which depend on their chemical composition. The present study displayed a biological method for synthesis of magnesium oxide (MgO) nano-flowers. The nano-flowers are developed without using any catalyst agent. Aqueous Rosemary extract was used to synthesize MgO nano-flowers (MgONFs) in stirring conditions and temperature at 70°C for 4 h. The mixture solution was checked by UV-Vis spectrum to confirm the presence of nanoparticles. The MgO nano-flowers powder was further characterized in this study by the X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. In addition, bacteriological tests indicated that MgO nano-flowers significantly inhibited bacterial growth, biofilm formation, and motility of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae , which is the causal agent of bacterial blight disease in rice. The electronic microscopic observation showed that bacterial cell death may be mainly due to destroy of cell integrity, resulting in leakage of intracellular content. As recommended, the use of Rosemary extract is an effective and green way to produce the MgO nano-flowers, which can be widely used in agricultural fields to suppress bacterial infection.

Abstract:Magnesium oxide nanostructured particles (NP) were prepared using a simple solution combustion technique using different leaf extracts such as Mangifera indica (Mango - Ma), Azadirachta indica (Neem-Ne), and Carica papaya (Papaya-Pa) as surfactants. The highly crystalline phase of MgO nanostructures was confirmed by PXRD and FTIR studies for 2 h 500°C calcined samples. To analyze the characteristics of obtained material-MaNP, NeNP, and PaNP for dosimetry applications, thermoluminescence (TL) studies were carried out for Co-60 gamma rays irradiated samples in the dose range 10-50 KGy; PaNP and NeNP exhibited well-defined glow curve when compared with MaNP samples. In addition, it was observed that the TL intensity decreases, with increase in gamma dose and the glow peak temperature is shifted towards the higher temperature with the increase in heating rate. The glow peak was segregated using glow curve deconvolution and thermal cleaning method. Kinetic parameters estimated using Chen's method, trap depth (E), and frequency factor (s) were found to be 0.699, 7.408, 0.4929, and 38.71, 11.008, and 10.71 for PaNP, NeNP, and MaNP respectively. The well-resolved glow curve, good linear behavior in the dose range of 10-50, KGy, and less fading were observed in PaNP as compared with MaNP and NeNP. Further, the antibacterial activity was checked against human pathogens such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A visible zone of clearance was observed at 200 and 100 μg/mL by the PaNP and NeNP, indicating the death of colonies by the nanoparticles. Therefore, PaNP nanomaterial is a potential phosphor material for dosimetry and antibacterial application compared to NeNP and MaNP.

Abstract:Abstract Endophytic fungus Penicillium crustosum EP-1 was used to create spherical shape magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs). The MgO-NPs possess a crystalline structure with sizes of 8–35 nm. The weight percentages of Mg and O were 42.44% and 30.13%, respectively, as shown in energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. In addition, analysis involving dynamic light scattering indicated the uniformity of MgO-NPs within the colloidal solution. These NPs displayed a polydispersity index of 0.341 and held a surface charge of −29.7 mV. A field experimental was carried out to assess the outcome of foliar spraying of MgO-NPs at 5, 10, and 20 ppm on the growth, yield, and metabolic activities of Nigella sativa L. Our results indicated that MgO-NPs significantly enhanced various growth parameters, including chlorophyll content (both a and b), total carotenoids, carbohydrate and protein levels in both shoots and seeds, as well as free proline concentration, compared to the control plants at both 55 and 75 days after planting. In addition, all yield traits were markedly increased. Moreover, high-performance liquid chromatography is employed for the identification of phenolic compounds within the seeds. Data indicated that sex phenolic acids, two phenols, and five flavonoids were present with high concentrations due to MgO-NPs treatment as opposed to untreated plants.

Abstract:Background. Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgONPs) have been fabricated by several approaches, including green chemistry approach due to diverse application and versatile features. Objectives. The current study aimed to prepare a convenient, biocompatible, and economically viable MgONPs using waste citron peel extract (CP‐MgONPs) to evaluate their biological applications. Methods. The CP‐MgONPs were synthesized by a sustainable approach from extract of waste citron peel both as capping and reducing agents without use of any hazardous material. The physicochemical features of formed CP‐MgONPs were determined by sophisticated analytical and microscopic techniques. The biogenic CP‐MgONPs were examined for their antibacterial, anticarcinogenic, and photocatalytic attributes. Results. A prominent absorption peak in the UV‐Vis spectra at 284 nm was the distinguishing characteristic of the CP‐MgONPs. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals polyhedral morphology of nanoparticles with slight agglomeration of CP‐MgONPs. The CP‐MgONPs exerted excellent antibacterial potencies against six bacterial strains. The CP‐MgONPs displayed significant susceptibility towards E. coli (20.72 ± 0.33 mm) and S. aureus (19.52 ± 0.05 mm) with the highest inhibition zones. The anticancer effect of CP‐MgONPs was evaluated against HepG2 (IC 50 : 15.3 μg·mL −1 ) cancer cells and exhibited potential anticancer activity. A prompt inversion of cellular injury manifested as impairment of the integrity of the cell membrane, apoptosis, and oxidative stress was observed in treated cells with CP‐MgONPs. The biosynthesized CP‐MgONPs also conducted successful photocatalytic potential as much as MgO powder under the UV‐light using acid orange 8 (AO‐8) dye. The degradation performance of CP‐MgONPs showed over 94% photocatalytic degradation efficiency of acid orange 8 (AO‐8) dyes within a short time. Conclusions. Outcomes of this research signify that biogenic CP‐MgONPs may be advantageous at low concentrations, with positive environmental impacts.

Abstract:MgO nanomaterial (nano-MgO) is a promising candidate in the antibacterial field owing to its high stability, environmental/ecological safety, good biocompatibility, and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity. However, the practical application of MgO nanoparticles is primarily limited by their relatively low antibacterial activity. In the present work, the fabrication of lithium (Li)-doped magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles via a simple, low-cost solution combustion method is reported, and the effect of fuel type of citric acid, urea, and glycine as fuels on the microstructure and antibacterial properties of Li-doped MgO nanoparticles is systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis demonstrates that the Li-doped MgO has a cubic structure. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses reveal that the Li-doped MgO synthesized using citric acid as the fuel exhibits a uniformly distributed spherical morphology along with the smallest crystallite size (ca. 17.4 nm). In addition, the antibacterial effects of the Li-doped MgO nanoparticles against Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) are evaluated by using a bacterial killing/colony forming unit (CFU) assay. The results demonstrate that the antimicrobial activity of the Li-doped MgO varies according to the synthesis fuel, with the citric acid fuel inducing the best antimicrobial activity. The antibacterial mechanisms of the Li-doped MgO nanoparticles are also characterized.

Abstract:For the first time, we have been reported the phytosynthesis of ultrathin 2D layered sharp-edged MgO nanosheets using Achyranthes aspera (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2%) via green route without any surfactants and the rarely characterized and emerging pathogens of Eggerthella lenta and Enterobacter aerogenes were used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of biosynthesized MgO nanomaterials. A. aspera has a superior role as a non-toxic bio-reducing agent in an entire synthesized process of MgO nanomaterial. Furthermore, the structure, morphology and physicochemical properties of the synthesized materials were elucidated by the analytical techniques like powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and UV–Visible Spectroscopy (UV–Vis). The scanning electron microscopic analysis (SEM) explored the morphology as a 2D nanostructure of A. aspera mediated ultrathin MgO nanosheets. Further, the microscopic analysis HRTEM revealed that the morphological refinement was greatly achieved by varying the concentration of the leaf extract utilized as a capping as well as the reducing agent. An In vitro antibacterial and antifungal analysis were quantitatively investigated for the 2D nanostructure of A. aspera mediated ultrathin MgO nanosheets. Besides, mechanism involving in the formation of MgO nanosheets and antimicrobial activity are well demonstrated to deepen the knowledge towards enhancement possibilities for the metal oxide nanoparticle synthesis and applications.

Abstract:Abstract The synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles with the use of plant extract is a promising alternative to the conventional chemical method. This work aimed to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) using plant extract of chamomile flower (Matricaria chamomilla L.), olive leave (Olea europaea) and red tomato fruit (Lycopersicon esculentum M.). The synthesized ZnONPs were characterized by UV–Visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with EDS profile. The XRD studies confirmed the presence of pure crystalline shapes of ZnO nanoparticles. The ZnONPs synthesized by Olea europaea had the least size range of 40.5 to 124.0 nm as revealed by the SEM observation while XRD revealed a dominant average size of 48.2 nm in the sample which is similar to the size distribution analysis obtained from TEM. The antibacterial effect of ZnONPs synthesized by Olea europaea on Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) strain GZ 0003 had an inhibition zone of 2.2 cm at 16.0 µg/ml which was significantly different from ZnONPs synthesized by Matricaria chamomilla and Lycopersicon esculentum. Also, the bacterial growth, biofilm formation, swimming motility and bacterial cell membrane of Xoo strain GZ 0003 were significantly affected by ZnO nanoparticle. Overall, zinc oxide nanoparticles are promising biocontrol agents that can be used to combat bacterial leaf blight diseases of rice.
Green synthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles using Hyphaene thebaica extract and their photocatalytic activities

Abstract:Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO NPs) represent an interesting inorganic material widely utilized across various fields including sensing, antimicrobial applications, optical coatings, water purification, fuel additives, absorbents, and catalysis, owing to their exceptional broad energy band gap, surface affinity, and strong chemical and thermal durability. In this investigation, MgO NPs were successfully synthesized through a green approach employing fruit extract from the gingerbread tree (Hyphaene thebaica). Analysis via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed their agglomerated quasi-spherical shape with a size range of 20-60 nm. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern exhibited prominent peaks at planes (200) and (220), indicating the high crystallinity of MgO NPs with a crystallite size of 32.6 ± 5 nm while Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis highlighted the composition comprises 40.47% Magnesium and 48.64% Oxygen by weight. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) revealed characteristic Mg-O bonds through peaks at 560 cm-1 and 866 cm-1, while Raman spectroscopy affirmed the cubic structure of MgO. Subsequently, the photocatalytic performance of MgO NPs under visible light irradiation was evaluated. Remarkably, the addition of 1 g/L of MgO nano-catalyst resulted in a degradation efficiency of 98% after 110 min on methylene blue dye, showcasing the high catalytic activity of MgO NPs. This remarkable photocatalytic efficiency emphasizes the potential of MgO NPs in environmental remediation.
Structural, Optical and Antibacterial Activity Studies on CMC/PVA Blend Filled with Three Different Types of Green Synthesized ZnO Nanoparticles

Abstract:In this work, zinc oxide (ZnO) was produced using extracts of Thymus (Z), Hibiscus rosa-sinensis (K), and Daucus carota (G). Furthermore, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) were combined with ZnO to form three novel nanocomposites. X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used for the structural analysis, where the semicrystalline nature of the (CMC/PVA)/ZnO nanocomposites was confirmed. The characteristics functional groups that arose inside the prepared samples were identified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Evidence for the successful preparation of the pure ZnO particles and their nanocomposites was carried out using a transmission electron microscope (TEM). The ZnO nanoparticles are mostly spherical, irregularly distributed, and have radii ranging from 10 to 40 nm. Their anti-bacterial activity was studied against B. subtilis , E. coli, and Candida albicans . The inhibition zones of all the prepared samples against E. coli were 0, 19, 31, and 23 mm for PVA/CMC blend, PVA/CMC/ZnO (Z) (PCZ-Z), PVA/CMC/ZnO (K) (PCZ-K), and PVA/CMC/ZnO (G) (PCZ-G), respectively, compared to the streptomycin control Gram-positive standard with inhibition zone (34 mm). On the other hand, the inhibition zones of the prepared samples against B. subtilis were equal to 0, 26, 33, and 28 mm for CMC/PVA, PCZ-Z, PCZ-K, and PCZ-G, respectively. Based on these results, the PCZ-K sample is the most effective at resisting E. coli (91.17%) and B. subtilis (94.28%). These nanocomposites do not have harmful chemicals, making them strong candidates for use in biological applications.

Abstract:In recent years, the utilization of a cost-effective and environmentally friendly approach for synthesizing nanoparticles for environmental and biomedical applications has gained significant importance. To achieve this objective, MgO-Ag nanoparticles were synthesized using Pistacia atlantica leaf extract (MgO-Ag@ PALE NPs). Characterization through FESEM, FT-IR, TEM, and XRD analyses confirmed the morphology, size, and purity of the synthesized nanoparticles. XRD analysis affirmed the absence of impurities in both pure MgO and MgO-Ag@ PALE NPs. The TEM and FESEM results showed a stone-like morphology with sizes ranging from approximately 70 to 80 nm. Antibacterial efficacy against five standard bacteria strains was evaluated using the broth micro-dilution method. The green synthesized MgO-Ag@ PALE NPs demonstrated remarkable antibacterial properties, particularly against Klebsiella pneumoniae , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , and Enterococcus faecalis , with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 250 μg/ml. The photocatalytic potential of both pure MgO and MgO-Ag@ PALE NPs was assessed for the degradation of industrial effluents (rhodamine B and methylene blue) under UV light exposure. The biosynthesized MgO-Ag@ PALE NPs exhibited a degradation rate of 94.32% for rhodamine B and 97.63% for methylene blue, highlighting their efficacy as nanocatalysts in photocatalytic applications. Meanwhile, the degradation percentage of rhodamine B and methylene blue pollutants for pure MgO nanoparticles was 88.64% and 90.41%, respectively. The results indicated that the doping of silver nanoparticles on magnesium oxide using Pistacia atlantica leaf extract can significantly enhance the degradation of pollutants. Consequently, our study demonstrates that MgO-Ag@ PALE NPs can be highly beneficial in biomedicine and the purification of industrial pollutants.

Abstract:This study focuses on the green synthesis of zinc oxide (ZnO) and magnesium-silver-doped zinc oxide (Mg-Ag-doped ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) via biomass conversion of Algerian Ghars date palm ( Phoenix dactylifera L.) seeds. Aqueous extracts of the seeds were utilized as reducing and stabilizing agents in the biogenic synthesis process. Structural, compositional, and morphological analyses, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM-EDAX), and ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), confirmed the successful formation of pure and Mg-Ag-doped ZnO NPs. The UV–Vis absorption spectra showed a shift from 395.6 nm (pure ZnO) to 373.2 nm (Mg-Ag doped), with corresponding energy values increasing from 3.13 to 3.32 eV, indicating changes in electronic structure due to doping. XRD analysis revealed an increase in average crystallite size from 12.8 nm (ZnO) to 22.0 nm (Mg-Ag ZnO) and a noticeable shift in peak positions, confirming successful doping. Biological evaluations demonstrated that Mg-Ag-doped ZnO NPs exhibited enhanced photocatalytic, antibacterial, antioxidant, and antidiabetic activities compared to undoped ZnO NPs. Notably, Mg-Ag ZnO NPs showed superior antioxidant activity with an IC 50 of 10.78 mg mL− 1 and EC 50 of 0.79 mg mL− 1 , compared to ZnO NPs with an IC 50 of 11.51 mg mL− 1 and EC 50 of 0.84 mg mL− 1 . They also exhibited higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency of methylene blue dye (93% vs. 87% for ZnO) under UV light. Antibacterial studies showed that Mg-Ag ZnO NPs had lower minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) than pure ZnO NPs, with a MIC of 0.625 mg mL− 1 and MBC of 0.625 mg mL− 1 for E. coli , compared to 2.5 and 10 mg mL− 1 , respectively, for pure ZnO. Furthermore, Mg-Ag-doped ZnO NPs exhibited significant α-amylase inhibition (48.0% at 0.25 mg mL− 1 ), outperforming pure ZnO NPs (38.9% at the same concentration), and showed competitive inhibition to the reference drug acarbose in antidiabetic tests. These findings highlight the potential of rationally designed biogenic ZnO nanostructures synthesized through biomass conversion of P. dactylifera seeds, especially after strategic doping, for various biomedical and environmental applications. This green synthesis approach, utilizing renewable biomass, offers an eco-friendly and sustainable route for producing ZnO-based nanomaterials with tunable properties.

Abstract:Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) were synthesized using the fungal strain Aspergillus terreus S1 to overcome the disadvantages of chemical and physical methods. The factors affecting the biosynthesis process were optimized as follows: concentration of Mg(NO3)2·6H2O precursor (3 mM), contact time (36 min), pH (8), and incubation temperature (35 °C). The characterization of biosynthesized MgO-NPs was accomplished using UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy—energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Data confirmed the successful formation of crystallographic, spherical, well-dispersed MgO-NPs with a size range of 8.0–38.0 nm at a maximum surface plasmon resonance of 280 nm. The biological activities of biosynthesized MgO-NPs including antimicrobial activity, biotreatment of tanning effluent, and chromium ion removal were investigated. The highest growth inhibition of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans was achieved at 200 μg mL–1 of MgO-NPs. The biosynthesized MgO-NPs exhibited high efficacy to decolorize the tanning effluent (96.8 ± 1.7% after 150 min at 1.0 μg mL–1) and greatly decrease chemical parameters including total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and conductivity with percentages of 98.04, 98.3, 89.1, 97.2, and 97.7%, respectively. Further, the biosynthesized MgO-NPs showed a strong potential to remove chromium ions from the tanning effluent, from 835.3 mg L–1 to 21.0 mg L–1, with a removal percentage of 97.5%.

Abstract:Plant-based green synthesis approach is increasingly popular because of its simple process, cost-effectiveness, environmental friendly nature, expandability to commercial level, efficiency in large-scale synthesis, and flexibility in utilizing various value-added products. This work focuses on the synthesis and characterization of nano-size MgO prepared using water-soluble compounds extracted from different parts of Moringa oleifera plant, including woody vascular, the bark of woody, twigs, and leaves. To examine the efficacy of the aqueous extracts as a reducing agent and stabilizing agent, they were mixed with magnesium chloride solution, followed by addition of NaOH solution to form precipitate of magnesium hydroxide. The progress of the reaction was followed by UV-Vis spectrophotometric technique. The precipitate was calcined at 600 ℃; for 5 h, and then characterized using various techniques include XRD, SEM, TEM, and PSA. The formation of MgO as nano material, with the particle size in the range of 40 to 100 nm was confirmed by characterization techniques employed. Successful production of nano-size MgO achieved in this study demonstrates that M. oleifera plant is a prospective source of green agents for production of nano-size materials.

Abstract:Green synthesis process has been developed to produce MgO nanoparticles using wet chemical method. In this process, Madhuca longifolia (M. longifolia) flower extracts has been used as a reducing and stabilizing agent and magnesium nitrate hexahydrate is used as a metal precursor. This study exhibits the effect of varied concentrations of metal precursors and flower extracts on the shape and size of the MgO nanoparticles. FTIR, UV vis spectroscopy, SEM, EDS and HRTEM analysis have been carried out to identify the functional groups involved in the reduction process, confirmation of MgO nanoparticles, morphological and elemental analysis of the MgO nanoparticles respectively. The results confirmed the presence of spherical MgO nanoparticles decorated over the surface of MgO microclusters. It is observed that the varying concentration of flower extracts and precursor have a profound effect on morphology of the nanoparticles resulting in the decrease in cluster size with the increase in extract concentration. The nanoparticles were also tested for the presence of antibacterial activity against the bacterial species of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract:This work is devoted to magnesium oxide (MgO) nanoparticles (NPs) for their use as additives for bone implants. Extracts from four different widely used plants, including Aloe vera, Echeveria elegans, Sansevieria trifasciata, and Sedum morganianum, were evaluated for their ability to facilitate the "green synthesis" of MgO nanoparticles. The thermal stability and decomposition behavior of the MgONPs were analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Structure characterization was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and Raman scattering spectroscopy (RS). Morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic activity of MgO nanoparticles was investigated based on the degradation of methyl orange (MeO) using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering spectroscopy (SERS) was used to monitor the adsorption of L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) on the surface of MgONPs. The calculated enhancement factor (EF) is up to 102 orders of magnitude for MgO. This is the first work showing the SERS spectra of a chemical compound immobilized on the surface of MgO nanoparticles.
