Abstract:Systems governed by a multivariate Langevin equation featuring an exact potential exhibit straightforward dynamics but are often difficult to recognize because, after a general coordinate change, the gradient flow becomes obscured by the Jacobian matrix of the mapping. In this work, a detailed analysis of the transformation properties of Langevin equations under general nonlinear mappings is presented. We show how to identify systems with exact potentials by understanding their differential-geometric properties. To demonstrate the power of our method, we use it to derive exact potentials for broadly studied models of nonlinear deterministic and stochastic oscillations. In selected examples, we visualize the identified potentials. Our results imply a broad class of exactly solvable stochastic models which can be self-consistently defined from given deterministic gradient systems.

Abstract:This article is concerned with sampling from Gibbs distributions $\pi(x)\propto e^{-U(x)}$ using Markov chain Monte Carlo methods. In particular, we investigate Langevin dynamics in the continuous- and the discrete-time setting for such distributions with potentials $U(x)$ which are strongly-convex but possibly non-differentiable. We show that the corresponding subgradient Langevin dynamics are exponentially ergodic to the target density $\pi$ in the continuous setting and that certain explicit as well as semi-implicit discretizations are geometrically ergodic and approximate $\pi$ for vanishing discretization step size. Moreover, we prove that the discrete schemes satisfy the law of large numbers allowing to use consecutive iterates of a Markov chain in order to compute statistics of the stationary distribution posing a significant reduction of computational complexity in practice. Numerical experiments are provided confirming the theoretical findings and showcasing the practical relevance of the proposed methods in imaging applications.

Abstract:In this paper, we address exponential ergodicity for Lévy driven Langevin dynamics with singular potentials, which can be used to model the time evolution of a molecular system consisting of N particles moving in Rd and subject to discontinuous stochastic forces. In particular, our results are applicable to the singular setups concerned with not only the Lennard-Jones-like interaction potentials but also the Coulomb potentials. In addition to Harris' theorem, the approach is based on novel constructions of proper Lyapunov functions (which are completely different from the setting for Langevin dynamics driven by Brownian motions), on invoking the Hörmander theorem for non-local operators and on solving the issue on an approximate controllability of the associated deterministic system as well as on exploiting the time-change idea.

Abstract:One longstanding difficult problem in quantum dissipative dynamics is to solve the spin-boson model in a non-Markovian regime where a tractable systematic master equation does not exist. The spin-boson model is particularly important due to its crucial applications in quantum noise control and manipulation as well as its central role in developing quantum theories of open systems. Here we solve this important model by developing a non-Markovian quantum Langevin approach. By projecting the quantum Langevin equation onto the coherent states of the bath, we can derive a set of non-Markovian quantum Bloch equations containing no explicit noise variables. This special feature offers a tremendous advantage over the existing stochastic Schr\"odinger equations in numerical simulations. The physical significance and generality of our approach are briefly discussed.

Our analysis requires only minimal assumptions on the divergence free drift term, enabling us to include drifts of critical order belonging merely to BMO. Abstract:We consider a system of interacting particles governed by the generalized Langevin equation (GLE) in the presence of external confining potentials, singular repulsive forces, as well as memory kernels. Using a Mori–Zwanzig approach, we represent the system by a class of Markovian dynamics. Under a general set of conditions on the nonlinearities, we study the large-time asymptotics of the multi-particle Markovian GLEs. We show that the system is always exponentially attractive toward the unique invariant Gibbs probability measure. The proof relies on a novel construction of Lyapunov functions. We then establish the validity of the small-mass approximation for the solutions by an appropriate equation on any finite-time window. Important examples of singular potentials in our results include the Lennard–Jones and Coulomb functions.

Abstract:We study the Langevin dynamics corresponding to the $\nabla\phi$ (or Ginzburg-Landau) interface model with a uniformly convex interaction potential. We interpret these Langevin dynamics as a nonlinear parabolic equation forced by white noise, which turns the problem into a nonlinear homogenization problem. Using quantitative homogenization methods, we prove a quantitative hydrodynamic limit, obtain the $C^2$ regularity of the surface tension, prove a large-scale Lipschitz-type estimate for the trajectories of the dynamics, and show that the fluctuation-dissipation relation can be seen as a commutativity of homogenization and linearization. Finally, we explain why we believe our techniques can be adapted to the setting of degenerate (non-uniformly) convex interaction potentials.

Abstract:Many physical systems characterized by nonlinear multiscale interactions can be effectively modeled by treating unresolved degrees of freedom as random fluctuations. However, even when the microscopic governing equations and qualitative macroscopic behavior are known, it is often difficult to derive a stochastic model that is consistent with observations. This is especially true for systems such as turbulence where the perturbations do not behave like Gaussian white noise, introducing non-Markovian behavior to the dynamics. We address these challenges with a framework for identifying interpretable stochastic nonlinear dynamics from experimental data, using both forward and adjoint Fokker-Planck equations to enforce statistical consistency. If the form of the Langevin equation is unknown, a simple sparsifying procedure can provide an appropriate functional form. We demonstrate that this method can effectively learn stochastic models in two artificial examples: recovering a nonlinear Langevin equation forced by colored noise and approximating the second-order dynamics of a particle in a double-well potential with the corresponding first-order bifurcation normal form. Finally, we apply the proposed method to experimental measurements of a turbulent bluff body wake and show that the statistical behavior of the center of pressure can be described by the dynamics of the corresponding laminar flow driven by nonlinear state-dependent noise.

Exponential mixing in a hydrodynamic pilot--wave theory with singular potentials

Abstract:We conduct an analysis of a stochastic hydrodynamic pilot-wave theory, which is a Langevin equation with a memory kernel that describes the dynamics of a walking droplet (or "walker") subjected to a repulsive singular potential and random perturbations through additive Gaussian noise. Under suitable assumptions on the singularities, we show that the walker dynamics is exponentially attracted toward the unique invariant probability measure. The proof relies on a combination of the Lyapunov technique and an asymptotic coupling specifically tailored to our setting. We also present examples of invariant measures, as obtained from numerical simulations of the walker in two-dimensional Coulomb potentials. Our results extend previous work on the ergodicity of stochastic pilot-wave dynamics established for smooth confining potentials.

Gradual convergence for Langevin dynamics on a degenerate potential

Abstract:In this paper, we study an ordinary differential equation with a degenerate global attractor at the origin, to which we add a white noise with a small parameter that regulates its intensity. Under general conditions, for any fixed intensity, as time tends to infinity, the solution of this stochastic dynamics converges exponentially fast in total variation distance to a unique equilibrium distribution. We suitably accelerate the random dynamics and show that the preceding convergence is gradual, that is, the total variation distance of the accelerated random dynamics and its equilibrium distribution converges to a decreasing function, which corresponds to the total variation distance between the marginal of a stochastic differential equation that comes down from infinity and its corresponding equilibrium distribution. This completes the classification of all possible behaviors of the total variation distance between the time marginal of the aforementioned stochastic dynamics and its invariant measure for one dimensional smooth convex potentials. In addition, there is no cut-off phenomenon for this one-parameter family of random processes and asymptotics of the mixing times are derived.

Abstract:Langevin (stochastic differential) equations are routinely used to describe particle-laden flows. They predict Gaussian probability density functions (PDFs) of a particle's trajectory and velocity, even though experimentally observed dynamics might be highly non-Gaussian. Our Liouville approach overcomes this dichotomy by replacing the Wiener process in the Langevin models with a (small) set of random variables, whose distributions are tuned to match the observed statistics.

Abstract:The article presents a novel variational calculus to analyze the stability and the propagation of chaos properties of nonlinear and interacting diffusions. This differential methodology combines gradient flow estimates with backward stochastic interpolations, Lyapunov linearization techniques as well as spectral theory. This framework applies to a large class of stochastic models including non homogeneous diffusions, as well as stochastic processes evolving on differentiable manifolds, such as constraint-type embedded manifolds on Euclidian spaces and manifolds equipped with some Riemannian metric. We derive uniform as well as almost sure exponential contraction inequalities at the level of the nonlinear diffusion flow, yielding what seems to be the first result of this type for this class of models. Uniform propagation of chaos properties w.r.t. the time parameter are also provided. Illustrations are provided in the context of a class of gradient flow diffusions arising in fluid mechanics and granular media literature. The extended versions of these nonlinear Langevin-type diffusions on Riemannian manifolds are also discussed.

Abstract:Many real-world systems exhibit ``noisy'' evolution in time; interpreting their finitely-sampled behavior as arising from continuous-time processes (in the Itô or Stratonovich sense) has led to significant success in modeling and analysis in a wide variety of fields. Yet such interpretation hinges on a fundamental linear separation of randomness from determinism in the underlying dynamics. Here we propose some theoretical systems which resist easy and self-consistent interpretation into this well-defined class of equations, requiring an expansion of the interpretive framework. We argue that a wider class of stochastic differential equations, where evolution depends nonlinearly on a random or effectively-random quantity, may be consistently interpreted and in fact exhibit finite-time stochastic behavior in line with an equivalent Itô process, at which point many existing numerical and analytical techniques may be used. We put forward a method for this conversion, and demonstrate its use on both a toy system and on a system of direct physical relevance: the velocity of a meso-scale particle suspended in a turbulent fluid. This work enables the theoretical and numerical examination of a wide class of mathematical models which might otherwise be oversimplified due to a lack of appropriate tools.

Abstract:Recent work has addressed the problem of inferring Langevin dynamics from data. In this work, we address the problem of relating terms in the Langevin equation to statistical properties, such as moments of the probability density function and of the probability current density, as well as covariance functions. We first review the case of linear Gaussian dynamics, and then consider extensions beyond this simple case. We address the question of quantitative significance of effects. We also analyze underdamped (second-order) processes, specifically in the limit where dynamics in state space is almost Markovian. Finally, we address detection of non-Markovianity.

Abstract:Langevin dynamics has become a popular tool to simulate the Boltzmann equilibrium distribution. When the repartition of the Langevin equation involves the exact realization of the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck noise, in addition to the conventional density evolution, there exists another type of discrete evolution that may not correspond to a continuous, real dynamical counterpart. This virtual dynamics case is also able to produce the desired stationary distribution. Different types of repartition lead to different numerical schemes, of which the accuracy and efficiency are investigated through studying the harmonic oscillator potential, an analytical solvable model. By analyzing the asymptotic distribution and characteristic correlation time that are derived by either directly solving the discrete equations of motion or using the related phase space propagators, it is shown that the optimal friction coefficient resulting in the minimum characteristic correlation time depends on the time interval chosen in the numerical implementation. When the recommended "middle" scheme is employed, both analytical and numerical results demonstrate that, for good numerical performance in efficiency as well as accuracy, one may choose a friction coefficient in a wide range from around the optimal value to the high friction limit.

Abstract:The geometric Brownian motion (GBM) is a standard model in quantitative finance, but the potential function of its stochastic differential equation (SDE) cannot include stable nonzero prices. This article generalizes the GBM to an SDE with polynomial drift of order q and shows via model selection that q=2 is most frequently the optimal model to describe the data. Abstract:This paper is concerned with a modified entropy method to establish the large-time convergence towards the (unique) steady state, for kinetic Fokker–Planck equations with non-quadratic confinement potentials in whole space. We extend previous approaches by analyzing Lyapunov functionals with non-constant weight matrices in the dissipation functional (a generalized Fisher information). We establish exponential convergence in a weighted -norm with rates that become sharp in the case of quadratic potentials. In the defective case for quadratic potentials, i.e. when the drift matrix has non-trivial Jordan blocks, the weighted -distance between a Fokker–Planck-solution and the steady state has always a sharp decay estimate of the order , with the friction parameter. The presented method also gives new hypoelliptic regularization results for kinetic Fokker–Planck equations (from a weighted -space to a weighted -space).
