Abstract:Inspired by [Fehrman, Gess; Invent. Math., 2023] and [Fehrman, Gess; Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 2024], we consider the Dean-Kawasaki equation with singular interactions and correlated noise which can be viewed as fluctuating mean-field limits. By imposing the Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin condition on the interaction kernel, the existence of probabilistic weak renormalized kinetic solutions is established. Further, under an additional integrability assumption on the divergence of the interaction kernel, a kinetic formulation approach is applied to derive pathwise uniqueness, leading to the strong well-posedness of the equation. As an application, we obtain the well-posedness of a conservative stochastic partial differential equations known as fluctuating Ising-Kac-Kawasaki dynamics, which paves a step on the conjecture concerning nonlinear fluctuations of Kawasaki dynamics proposed by [Giacomin, Lebowitz, Presutti; Math. Surveys Monogr., 1999].

Abstract:The Dean-Kawasaki model consists of a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation featuring a conservative, multiplicative, stochastic term with non-Lipschitz coefficient, and driven by space-time white noise; this equation describes the evolution of the density function for a system of finitely many particles governed by Langevin dynamics. Well-posedness for the Dean-Kawasaki model is open except for specific diffusive cases, corresponding to overdamped Langevin dynamics. There, it was recently shown by Lehmann, Konarovskyi, and von Renesse that no regular (non-atomic) solutions exist. We derive and analyse a suitably regularised Dean-Kawasaki model of wave equation type driven by coloured noise, corresponding to second order Langevin dynamics, in one space dimension. The regularisation can be interpreted as considering particles of finite size rather than describing them by atomic measures. We establish existence and uniqueness of a solution. Specifically, we prove a high-probability result for the existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to this regularised Dean-Kawasaki model.

A Dean-Kawasaki equation for reaction diffusion systems driven by Poisson noise

Abstract:We derive a stochastic partial differential equation that describes the fluctuating behaviour of reaction-diffusion systems of N particles, undergoing Markovian, unary reactions. This generalises the work of Dean [J. Phys. A: Math. and Gen., 29 (24), L613, (1996)] through the inclusion of random Poisson fields. Our approach is based on weak interactions, which has the dual benefit that the resulting equations asymptotically converge (in the N to infinity limit) on a variation of a McKean- Vlasov diffusion, whilst still being related to the case of Dean-like strong interactions via a trivial rescaling. Various examples are presented, alongside a discussion of possible extensions to more complicated reaction schemes.

Abstract:Inspired by [Fehrman, Gess; Invent. Math., 2023], we provide a fine analysis of the McKean-Vlasov PDE with singular interactions and drift terms of square root form. As the corresponding skeleton equation of Dean-Kawasaki equation with singular interactions (a stochastic, conservative PDE), it determines the rate function of small noise large deviations. By imposing Ladyzhenskaya-Prodi-Serrin type conditions on the interaction kernel, we establish the large deviations in the framework of stochastic renormalized kinetic solution, when the intensity and the correlation of the noise are simultaneously sent to $0$ under a suitable scaling. This result contributes to demonstrating the consistency between the macroscopic fluctuation theory associated with singular interacting mean-field systems and fluctuating hydrodynamics related to the Dean-Kawasaki equation. As an application, we also obtain large deviations for the other stochastic conservative PDE called fluctuating Ising-Kac-Kawasaki dynamics. It is of great importance in exploring fluctuations of Kawasaki dynamical Ising-Kac model, since they formally exhibits the same key features in terms of Gaussian fluctuations, large deviations, and scaling limits near criticality.

Abstract:The Dean-Kawasaki equation - a strongly singular SPDE - is a basic equation of fluctuating hydrodynamics; it has been proposed in the physics literature to describe the fluctuations of the density of $N$ independent diffusing particles in the regime of large particle numbers $N\gg 1$. The singular nature of the Dean-Kawasaki equation presents a substantial challenge for both its analysis and its rigorous mathematical justification. Besides being non-renormalisable by the theory of regularity structures by Hairer et al., it has recently been shown to not even admit nontrivial martingale solutions. In the present work, we give a rigorous and fully quantitative justification of the Dean-Kawasaki equation by considering the natural regularisation provided by standard numerical discretisations: We show that structure-preserving discretisations of the Dean-Kawasaki equation may approximate the density fluctuations of $N$ non-interacting diffusing particles to arbitrary order in $N^{-1}$ (in suitable weak metrics). In other words, the Dean-Kawasaki equation may be interpreted as a "recipe" for accurate and efficient numerical simulations of the density fluctuations of independent diffusing particles.

Abstract:We develop a unifying theory for four different objects: (1) infinite systems of interacting massive particles; (2) solutions to the Dean-Kawasaki equation with singular drift and space-time white noise; (3) Wasserstein diffusions with a.s. purely atomic reversible random measures; (4) metric measure Brownian motions induced by Cheeger energies on $L^2$-Wasserstein spaces. For the objects in (1)-(3) we prove existence and uniqueness of solutions, and several characterizations, on an arbitrary locally compact Polish ambient space $M$ with exponentially recurrent Feller driving noise. In the case of the Dean-Kawasaki equation, this amounts to replacing the Laplace operator with some arbitrary diffusive Markov generator $\mathsf{L}$ with ultracontractive semigroup. In addition to a complete discussion of the free case, we consider singular interactions, including, e.g., mean-field repulsive isotropic pairwise interactions of Riesz and logarithmic type under the assumption of local integrability. We further show that each Markov diffusion generator $\mathsf{L}$ on $M$ induces in a natural way a geometry on the space of probability measures over $M$. When $M$ is a manifold and $\mathsf{L}$ is a drifted Laplace-Beltrami operator, this geometry coincides with the geometry of $L^2$-optimal transportation. The corresponding `geometric Brownian motion' coincides with the 'metric measure Brownian motion' in (4).

Abstract:The Dean-Kawasaki equation - one of the most fundamental SPDEs of fluctuating hydrodynamics - has been proposed as a model for density fluctuations in weakly interacting particle systems. In its original form it is highly singular and fails to be renormalizable even by approaches such as regularity structures and paracontrolled distributions, hindering mathematical approaches to its rigorous justification. It has been understood recently that it is natural to introduce a suitable regularization, e.g., by applying a formal spatial discretization or by truncating high-frequency noise. In the present work, we prove that a regularization in form of a formal discretization of the Dean-Kawasaki equation indeed accurately describes density fluctuations in systems of weakly interacting diffusing particles: We show that in suitable weak metrics, the law of fluctuations as predicted by the discretized Dean-Kawasaki SPDE approximates the law of fluctuations of the original particle system, up to an error that is of arbitrarily high order in the inverse particle number and a discretization error. In particular, the Dean-Kawasaki equation provides a means for efficient and accurate simulations of density fluctuations in weakly interacting particle systems.

Abstract:We consider systems of interacting particles which are described by a second order Langevin equation, i.e., particles experiencing inertia. We introduce an associated equation of fluctuating hydrodynamics, which can be interpreted as stochastic version of a Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation. We show that this stochastic partial differential equation exhibits the same dichotomy as the corresponding first order (inertial-free) equation, the so-called Dean-Kawasaki equation: Solutions exist only for suitable atomic initial data, but not for smooth initial data. The class of systems covered includes several models of active matter.

Abstract:Systems governed by a multivariate Langevin equation featuring an exact potential exhibit straightforward dynamics but are often difficult to recognize because, after a general coordinate change, the gradient flow becomes obscured by the Jacobian matrix of the mapping. In this work, a detailed analysis of the transformation properties of Langevin equations under general nonlinear mappings is presented. We show how to identify systems with exact potentials by understanding their differential-geometric properties. To demonstrate the power of our method, we use it to derive exact potentials for broadly studied models of nonlinear deterministic and stochastic oscillations. In selected examples, we visualize the identified potentials. Our results imply a broad class of exactly solvable stochastic models which can be self-consistently defined from given deterministic gradient systems.

Stochastic dynamics of particle systems on unbounded degree graphs

Abstract:We consider an infinite system of coupled stochastic differential equations (SDE) describing dynamics of the following infinite particle system. Each partricle is characterised by its position $x\in \mathbb{R}^{d}$ and internal parameter (spin) $\sigma _{x}\in \mathbb{R}$. While the positions of particles form a fixed ("quenched") locally-finite set (configuration) $ \gamma \subset $ $\mathbb{R}^{d}$, the spins $\sigma _{x}$ and $\sigma _{y}$ interact via a pair potential whenever $\left\vert x-y\right\vert <\rho $, where $\rho >0$ is a fixed interaction radius. The number $n_{x}$ of particles interacting with a particle in positionn $x$ is finite but unbounded in $x$. The growth of $n_{x}$ as $x\rightarrow \infty $ creates a major technical problem for solving our SDE system. To overcome this problem, we use a finite volume approximation combined with a version of the Ovsjannikov method, and prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution in a scale of Banach spaces of weighted sequences. As an application example, we construct stochastic dynamics associated with Gibbs states of our particle system.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the existence and uniqueness of weak solutions for kinetic stochastic differential equations with Hölder diffusion and unbounded singular drifts in Kato's class. Moreover, we also establish sharp two-sided estimates for the density of the solution. In particular, the drift $b$ can be in the mixed $L^q_tL^{p_1}_{x_1}L^{p_2}_{x_2}$ space with $\frac2q+\frac{d}{p_1}+\frac{3d}{p_2}<1$. As an application, we show the existence and uniqueness of weak solution to a second order singular interacting particle system in ${\mathbb R}^{d N}$.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a drift-diffusion process on the probability simplex to study stochastic fluctuations in probability spaces. We construct a counting process for linear detailed balanced chemical reactions with finite species such that its thermodynamic limit is a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) on the probability simplex. This ODE can be formulated as a gradient flow with an Onsager response matrix that induces a Riemannian metric on the probability simplex. After incorporating the induced Riemannian structure, we propose a diffusion approximation of the rescaled counting process for molecular species in the chemical reactions, which leads to Langevin dynamics on the probability simplex with a degenerate Brownian motion constructed from the eigen-decomposition of Onsager's response matrix. The corresponding Fokker-Planck equation on the simplex can be regarded as the usual drift-diffusion equation with the extrinsic representation of the divergence and Laplace-Beltrami operator. The invariant measure is the Gibbs measure, which is the product of the original macroscopic free energy and a volume element. When the drift term vanishes, the Fokker-Planck equation reduces to the heat equation with the Laplace-Beltrami operator, which we refer to as canonical Wasserstein diffusions on graphs. In the case of a two-point probability simplex, the constructed diffusion process is converted to one dimensional Wright-Fisher diffusion process, which leads to a natural boundary condition ensuring that the process remains within the probability simplex.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Mathematical Analysis, Volume 56, Issue 2, Page 2661-2713, April 2024. In this work we show the strong convergence of propagation of chaos for the particle approximation of McKean-Vlasov SDEs with singular [math]-interactions as well as for the moderate interaction particle systems on the level of particle trajectories. One of the main obstacles is to establish the strong well-posedness of the SDEs for particle systems with singular interaction. To this end, we extend the results on strong well-posedness of Krylov and Röckner [Probab. Theory Related Fields, 131 (2005), pp. 154–196] to the case of mixed [math]-drifts, where the heat kernel estimates play a crucial role. Moreover, when the interaction kernel is bounded measurable, we also obtain the optimal rate of strong convergence, which is partially based on Jabin and Wang's entropy method [P.-E. Jabin and Z. Wang, J. Funct. Anal., 271 (2016), pp. 3588–3627] and Zvonkin's transformation.

A Local Bifurcation Theorem for McKean-Vlasov Diffusions

Abstract:Stationary distributions of many McKean-Vlasov diffusions with gradient-type drifts can be obtained by solving probability measure-valued equations. We established an existence result of a solution to this equation on a space of probability measures endowed with weighted variation distance. After introducing a parameter to this equation, a local Krasnoselskii bifurcation theorem is established when distribution dependent part is an integral with respect to the probability measure. The bifurcation point is relevant to the phase transition point of the associated McKean-Vlasov diffusion. Regularized determinant for the Hilbert-Schmidt operator is used to derive our criteria for the bifurcation point. Examples, such as granular media equation and Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation with quadratic interaction, are given to illustrate our results.

On the long-time statistical behavior of smooth solutions of the weakly damped, stochastically-driven KdV equation

Abstract:This paper considers the damped periodic Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in the presence of a white-in-time and spatially smooth stochastic source term and studies the long-time behavior of solutions. We show that the integrals of motion for KdV can be exploited to prove regularity and ergodic properties of invariant measures for damped stochastic KdV. First, by considering non-trivial modifications of the integrals of motion, we establish Lyapunov structure by proving that moments of Sobolev norms of solutions at all orders of regularity are bounded globally-in-time; existence of invariant measures follows as an immediate consequence. Next, we prove a weak Foias-Prodi type estimate for damped stochastic KdV, for which the synchronization occurs in expected value. This estimate plays a crucial role throughout our subsequent analysis. As a first novel application, we combine the Foias-Prodi estimate with the Lyapunov structure to establish that invariant measures are supported on smooth functions provided that the external driving forces are smooth. We then establish ergodic properties of invariant measures, treating the regimes of arbitrary damping and large damping separately. For arbitrary damping, we demonstrate that the framework of `asymptotic coupling' can be implemented for a compact proof of uniqueness of the invariant measure provided that sufficiently many directions in phase space are stochastically forced. Our proof is paradigmatic for SPDEs for which a weak Foias-Prodi type property holds. Lastly, for large damping, we establish the existence of a spectral gap with respect to a Wasserstein-like distance, and exponential mixing and uniqueness of the invariant measure follows.

Abstract:We study a class of McKean--Vlasov Stochastic Differential Equations (MV-SDEs) with drifts and diffusions having super-linear growth in measure and space -- the maps have general polynomial form but also satisfy a certain monotonicity condition. The combination of the drift's super-linear growth in measure (by way of a convolution) and the super-linear growth in space and measure of the diffusion coefficient require novel technical elements in order to obtain the main results. We establish wellposedness, propagation of chaos (PoC), and under further assumptions on the model parameters we show an exponential ergodicity property alongside the existence of an invariant distribution. No differentiability or non-degeneracy conditions are required. Further, we present a particle system based Euler-type split-step scheme (SSM) for the simulation of this type of MV-SDEs. The scheme attains, in stepsize, the strong error rate $1/2$ in the non-path-space root-mean-square error metric and we demonstrate the property of mean-square contraction. Our results are illustrated by numerical examples including: estimation of PoC rates across dimensions, preservation of periodic phase-space, and the observation that taming appears to be not a suitable method unless strong dissipativity is present.

On a particle approximation to the Dean-Kawasaki type equation with logarithmic interactions

Abstract:Following the idea of intrinsic constructions of Brownian motions on the Wasserstein space, we construct a class of particle models whose fluctuating hydrodynamic limits, denoted as $p_t^\beta$, are solutions to the martingale problems of a class of Dean-Kawasaki type equations on $\mathbb{T}$ with logarithmic repulsive interactions depending on the inverse temperature $\beta$ and a new spectral approximation to the noise part, which approximately features Otto's metric in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{T})$. Specifically, we give a quantitative convergence rate of the particle approximation using the convexity of the logarithmic interaction. This allows us to identify a unique limit distribution only depending on $\beta$. As the inverse temperature rises, the regularizing effect of repulsive interactions becomes stronger. We prove that there exists three thresholds $0<\lambda_0<\lambda_1<\lambda_2$ depending on the noise such that, when $\beta>\lambda_0$, $p_t^\beta$ is a non-atomic measure process in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{T})$; when $\beta>\lambda_1$, $p_t^\beta$ is absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure almost surely; when $\beta>\lambda_2$, the expectation of the Rényi entropy of $p_t^\beta$ satisfies an exponential decay estimate.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the notion of stochastic kinetic solutions introduced in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2108.08858" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2108.08858">arXiv:2108.08858</a> to establish the well-posedness of stochastic kinetic solutions of generalized Dean-Kawasaki equations with correlated noise on bounded, $C^2$-domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The results apply to a wide class of non-negative boundary data, which is based on certain a priori estimates for the solutions, that encompasses all non-negative constant functions including zero and all smooth functions bounded away from zero.
