Abstract:Treatment of large volumes of waters contaminated by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) remains a challenge. This work presented a systematic study on PFAS removal by foam fractionation (FF). Experiments were conducted on both laboratory-spiked and environmental water samples containing PFASs. It is found that higher air flow, greater ionic strength, and addition of thickener boosted PFAS removal in the defoamed bottom solutions and intensified enrichment in the collected foam. FF treatments of a landfill leachate, a groundwater contaminated by aqueous film-forming foams, and a wastewater treatment plant effluent sample were evaluated. The removal reached above 70% for most monitored PFASs, except the ones of short alkyl chains. PFAS concentrations in the final collected foams were up to over 30 × than that in the original samples. Analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry revealed enrichment of non-target PFASs by FF. The results of this study demonstrate great effectiveness of FF in removing most PFASs from waters, producing low-volume, highly concentrated solutions of PFASs in all tested environmental samples.

Abstract:Perfluorosulfonic acids (PFSA) are a class of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), which have been extensively used in numerous applications. The toxicity and bioaccumulation of PFAS have become a serious worldwide problem. Foam fractionation has been suggested as a promising remediation method for PFAS removal owing to the amphiphilic nature of most of the currently existing PFAS in the environment, allowing them to migrate to the air-water interface during the foaming process. Nevertheless, the current challenge for widespread utilization of foam fractionation is its low removal efficiency, especially for short-chain PFAS. Foam fractionation performance depends on the air-water interfacial properties as well as the ability for PFAS to adsorb at the air-water interface. In the present study, therefore, we investigate surface tensions of PFSA with long and short chain lengths. Different adsorption models are studied to estimate maximum surface excess concentrations for various PFSA. Our results indicate that long-chain PFSA have lower surface tensions, higher surface activities, and form more rigid air-water interfaces. This study marks the first investigation of dilatational interfacial rheology of PFAS, as well as addressing the gap in understanding PFAS interfacial rheology by focusing on the quantification the storage and loss interfacial moduli, which are known to play a significant role in the foaming process.

Foam fractionation removal of multiple per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances from landfill leachate

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a common contaminant in municipal landfill leachate and are recognized as a pollutant on global scale. The present work examined foam fractionation (FF) in batch and continuous modes as an appropriate treatment technique for PFAS removal for the landfill leachate and found stable removal efficiency of greater than 90% for PFOA (C7), PFOS (C8), PFHxS (C6), and PFHpA (C6) and 6:2 FTSA (C6). For other PFAS such as PFNA (C8), PFPeS (C4), PFHxA (C5), PFHpS (C7), and PFBS (C4), a less stable removal between 80% and 50% was achieved while between 50% and 20% removal was observed for EtFOSAA (C8), PFBA (C3), PFDA (C9), FOSA (C8), PFPeA (C4), and MeFOSAA (C8). Increased air flowrate, addition of iron (III) oxide (Fe+3) coagulant, conductivity, and greater untreated leachate PFAS concentration were factors resulting in increased removal efficiency for the majority of PFAS. Commercial‐scale removal of short‐chain PFAS in a batch‐wise adsorptive bubble separation process by dosing with cationic co‐surfactant

Abstract:Studies performed by Burns et al. in 2021 and 2022 demonstrated that a three‐stage batch‐wise adsorptive bubble separation process, surface active foam fractionation (SAFF), is effective at removing most per‐ and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) from contaminated groundwaters and landfill leachates. However, PFAS species with very low adsorption coefficients to bubble surfaces are difficult to remove, which is parallel to the difficulties in removing short‐chain PFAS in granulated activated carbon beds and other solid media. It is well known that the adsorption coefficient to bubble surfaces improves in the presence of electrolytes in solution and it has previously been shown that this improves the removal of PFAS. By developing a correlation for the removal percentage of one species or another of PFAS due to SAFF in commercial‐scale processes as a function of the adsorption coefficient, it is possible to generally estimate the removal percentage of any PFAS. The addition of a cationic co‐surfactant, cetrimonium bromide, to the feed can significantly further improve the adsorption coefficient and, as a consequence, materially improve the removal of short‐chain PFAS due to SAFF. A method for estimating this improved performance is in qualitative agreement with plant trials of SAFF at a North American site with a history of groundwater contamination due to the use of aqueous film forming foams firefighting foams, but the precise improvements appear to be dependent upon the concentration of the added co‐surfactant. The required concentration of co‐surfactant is significantly larger than might be expected on charge equivalence considerations, and this may be due to its consumption by other species in the feed, including PFAS that have not been accounted for. It is noted that the SAFF process may not be true foam fractionation and may, instead, be a bubble fractionator, both of which can be collectively described by the term "adsorptive bubble separation processes."
Surfactant-enhanced coagulation and flocculation improves the removal of perfluoroalkyl substances from surface water

Abstract:Coagulation/flocculation is a widely used water and wastewater treatment process due to its low cost, simplicity, and effectiveness. However, the process is not effective in the treatment of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), the presence and treatment of which is an ongoing challenge for water providers. Here, we explore cationic surfactant-enhanced coagulation as a process modification to target the removal of PFAS in existing coagulation/flocculation systems. Batch experiments, in jar testing apparatus, were performed to assess the removal of two short-chain and two long-chain PFAS at an initial concentration of 10 μg/L with the addition of cetyltrimethylammoniumg chloride (CTAC) as the coagulant-aid. Our findings suggest that elevated coagulant dose (60 mg/L of alum or 100 mg/L of FeCl3) coupled with the addition of a cationic surfactant (1 mg/L of CTAC) significantly enhanced the removal of both short-chain (perfluorobutane sulfonate: PFBS removal to >40%) and long-chain PFAS (perfluorooctanoic acid: PFOA and perfluorooctane sulfonate: PFOS removal to >80%), with FeCl3 showing better performance than alum. Sulfonates (PFBS, PFOS) were shown to be removed more efficiently compared to carboxylates (PFBA, PFOA), presumably due to their higher hydrophobicity leading to better interactions with the flocs. Furthermore, CTAC in combination with traditionally used additives such as Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC), served as a better aid for PFAS treatment and improved the removal of PFBS, PFOA, and PFOS to >98%. This study highlights that introducing a cost-effective pre-treatment with a cationic surfactant to existing conventional treatment systems can improve the performance efficiency in treating PFAS-contaminated waters.
Efficient Removal of Perfluorooctane Sulfonate from Aqueous Film-Forming Foam Solution by Aeration-Foam Collection.

Abstract:Aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) used in fire-fighting are one of the main contamination sources of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) to the subterranean environment, requiring high costs for remediation. In this study, a method that combined aeration and foam collection was presented to remove PFOS from a commercially available AFFF solution. The method utilized the strong surfactant properties of PFOS that cause it to be highly enriched at air-water interfaces. With an aeration flow rate of 75 mL/min, PFOS removal percent reached 96% after 2 h, and the PFOS concentration in the collected foam was up to 6.5 mmol/L, beneficial for PFOS recovery and reuse. Increasing the aeration flow rate, ionic strength and concentration of co-existing surfactant, as well as decreasing the initial PFOS concentration, increased the removal percents of PFOS by increasing the foam volume, but reduced the enrichment of PFOS in the foams. With the assistance of a co-existing hydrocarbon surfactant, PFOS removal percent was above 99.9% after aeration-foam collection for 2 h and the enrichment factor exceeded 8400. Aeration-foam collection was less effective for short-chain perfluoroalkyl substances due to their relatively lower surface activity. Aeration-foam collection was found to be effective for the removal of high concentrations of PFOS from AFFF-contaminated wastewater, and the concentrated PFOS in the collected foam can be reused.

Abstract:The increased detection of understudied per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in environmental matrices has highlighted the need to evaluate the treatability of a wide-range of PFAS by sorption-based processes. This study investigated the efficacy of three commercial adsorbents (i.e., granular activated carbon (GAC), surface modified clay (SMC), and anionic exchange resin (AER)) for the removal of a wide range of cationic, zwitterionic, and anionic PFAS from an aqueous film forming foam (AFFF)-impacted groundwater employing rapid small-scale column tests (RSSCTs) coupled with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) and suspect screening analysis (SQ). AER exhibited later breakthrough times for the majority of anionic and zwitterionic PFAS compared to SMC and GAC. However, both AER and SMC exhibited negligible removal of cationic PFAS presumably due to the reliance of these adsorbents on electrostatic interactions and the counteraction of hydrophobic forces caused by the repulsion between cationic PFAS and positively charged surfaces of AER and SMC. GAC, being a non-selective adsorbent, was largely unaffected by the ionic charge of the evaluated PFAS with molecular structure having a bigger impact on adsorbability. The detection of a variety of PFAS classes in the investigated AFFF-impacted groundwater enabled assessment of the relative impact of chemical structure on adsorptive removal of PFAS. Chain-length dependent adsorption was observed across all investigated anionic and zwitterionic PFAS classes. The PFAS structures possessing hydroxyl and/or methyl functional groups exhibited later breakthrough times compared to their homologues lacking these functional groups and cyclic/unsaturated structures were removed less efficiently compared to their linear/saturated homologues. In the case of perfluoroalkyl acid (PFAA)-derivative structures, hydrogen-substituted classes (i.e., H-PFAAs) were removed more efficiency than PFAAs while keto-substituted structures (i.e., K-PFSA) and pentahydrido-fluoroalkane sulfates (PeH-FAOS) exhibited lower adsorbability compared to PFAAs for all adsorbents. Oxa-PFAAs (O-PFSA; isomer class of PFA-OS) on the other hand demonstrated higher adsorbability compared to PFAAs in the case of AER-like adsorbents, while this trend was reversed for GAC.

Abstract:The historical use of aqueous film forming foams (AFFF) containing perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) for firefighting and training activities has resulted in groundwater contamination. The competitive adsorption of PFASs and the effect of co-existing compounds on the removal of PFASs by anion-exchange resins were studied in this study. Perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) was selected as the representative PFAS, and resin IRA910 was found to be effective for PFHxS removal. When PFHxS was co-removed with other PFASs in bisolute system, it replaced the adsorbed PFASs with shorter C-F chains on the IRA910, while perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) was not replaced by PFHxS. The competitive adsorption among PFASs decreased in the order of PFOS > PFHxS > PFOA > PFBS > PFHxA > PFBA, closely related to the hydrophobicity and functional groups of PFASs. The nonionic organic compounds could not interfere with the PFHxS removal, while ionic ones can reduce the sorption amount and their influence to the sorption of PFHxS was concentration dependent. The presence of inorganic anions slightly decreased the removal efficiency of PFHxS and the influence of different inorganic anions was similar due to multiple effects including competitive anion, screening effect, and salting-out effect in the adsorption process.
Impact of Salinity and Temperature on Removal of PFAS Species from Water by Aeration in the Absence of Additional Surfactants: A Novel Application of Green Chemistry Using Adsorptive Bubble Fractionation

Abstract:Aeration of water contaminated with per-and polyfluor-oalkyl substances (PFASs) derived from the historical use of aqueous film-forming foams used in firefighting training and incident responses has been demonstrated to promote separation/concentration of PFAS by adsorptive bubble fractionation. This study examined the efficacy of changes in the environmental and process parameters, salinity, temperature, and aeration time on PFAS removal efficiency in the absence of additional amphiphilic substances, such as co-surfactants. The results demonstrate that the bubble fractionation process can operate effectively across a wide range of saline and temperature regimes and achieve high levels of overall PFAS removal (>95%). Removal by bubble fractionation of some short-chain PFAS species, characterized by lower air-water adsorption coefficients, was improved by both increased electrolyte (i.e., salt) and with decreased temperature in the treated water. Conversely, removal of total PFAS decreased slightly (to 93%) when processing higher temperature (37 degrees C) feedwater. The experiments demonstrate the viability of bubble fractionation of contaminated aqueous media as a primary PFAS removal step prior to PFAS concentration and subsequent destruction.

Abstract:With nearly five decades of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) being associated with firefighting and industrial activities, these compounds inevitably accumulate in both ground and surface water. PFAS contamination in water has emerged as a significant environmental and public health concern, particularly perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), which is often found in higher concentrations compared to other PFAS and has more pronounced adverse health effects. Addressing PFAS contamination requires treating large volumes of water, making technologies that rapidly separate and concentrate PFASs highly favoured. The strong surface activity of PFAS, such as PFOS, enables them to generate colloidal gas aphrons (CGAs) during high shear mixing of their aqueous solutions, where PFASs can be separated and collected as foam. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of high shear mixing in separating PFOS from solution, leveraging its accumulation at air–water interfaces. High shear-assisted PFOS separation was tested by varying parameters like rotational speed (4000 to 10,000 rpm), mixing time (30 s to 30 min), and the effect of electrolytes. Results showed greater PFOS separation in the presence of electrolytes, particularly monovalent cations like Na + , compared to divalent cations such as Ca 2+ , due to the creation of more stable CGAs with smaller sizes. At a mixing rate of 6000 rpm, 85 % of PFOS was removed in 30 s from a highly contaminated PFOS solution (10 mg/L), with over 95 % separation after 5 mixing cycles. While high-shear mixing was efficient in PFOS separation from highly contaminated solutions it was less efficient for low-level contaminated solutions (less than 1 mg/L). These results suggest that hydrodynamic cavitation induced by high-shear mixing seems promising for enhancing the separation of PFOS from heavily contaminated solutions. This technique could serve as a standalone method or be integrated with other PFAS removal technologies to enhance the overall efficiency of PFAS removal from polluted water sources.

Abstract:Soil washing is currently attracting attention as a promising remediation strategy for land contaminated with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). In the soil washing process, the contaminant is transferred from the soil into the liquid phase, producing a PFAS contaminated process water. One way to treat such process water is to use coagulation and flocculation; however, few studies are available on the performance of coagulation and flocculation for removing PFAS from such process water. This study evaluated 6 coagulants and flocculants (polyaluminium chloride (PACl), zirconium oxychloride octahydrate, cationic and anionic polyacrylamide, Polyclay 685 and Perfluor Ad®), for the treatment of a proxy PFAS contaminated washing water, spiked with PFAS concentrations found at typical Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) contaminated sites. PFAS removal efficiencies (at constant pH) varied greatly depending on the coagulants and flocculants, as well as the dosage used and the targeted PFAS. All tested coagulants and flocculants reduced the turbidity by >95%, depending on the dosage. Perfluor Ad®, a specially designed coagulant, showed the highest removal efficiency for all longer chain (>99%) and shorter chain PFAS (>68%). The cationic polyacrylamide polymer removed longer chain PFAS up to an average of 80%, whereas average shorter chain PFAS removal was lower (<30%). The two metal-based coagulants tested, PACl and zirconium, removed longer chain PFAS by up to an average of 61% and shorter chain PFAS up to 48%. Polyclay 685, a mixture of powdered activated carbon (PAC) and aluminium sulphate, removed longer chain PFAS by 90% and shorter chain PFAS on average by 76%, when very high dosages of the coagulant were used (2,000 mg/L). PFAS removal efficiencies correlated with chain length and headgroup. Shorter chain PFAS removal was dependent on electrostatic interaction with the precipitating flocs, whereas for longer chain PFAS, hydrophobic interactions between apolar functional groups and flocs created by the coagulant/flocculant, dissolved organic matter and suspended solids played a major role. The results of this study showed that by selecting the most efficient coagulant and aqueous conditions, a greater amount of PFAS can be removed from process waters in soil washing facilities, and thus included as part of various treatment trains.

Abstract:Treatment of waters contaminated by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in large volumes remains a challenge to date. Treatment trains comprising separation and destruction technologies are promising to manage PFAS contamination. Foam fractionation (FF) and electrochemical oxidation (EO) are two cost-effective technologies for PFAS separation and destruction, respectively. This work systematically explored the performance of a treatment train of FF followed by EO (FF-EO) for treating PFAS in environmental water samples. For each treatment step, the dependence of the treatment performance on operational factors and other variables were analyzed statistically. The statistical analysis revealed PFAS enrichment and removal depend significantly on PFAS carbon chain length, solution conductivity, and PFAS concentration. Whether FF-EO treatment costs less energy than direct EO without FF mainly relies upon PFAS carbon chain length and TOC content in the sample. Both correlations were found to be linear. For all environmental water samples in this study, FF-EO is more energy-efficient than EO alone.

Revealing the Molecular-Level Interactions between Cationic Fluorinated Polymer Sorbents and the Major PFAS Pollutant PFOA

Abstract:The development of new technologies for the removal of a family of manufactured chemicals, the per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), from the environment is urgently needed to safeguard public and environmental health. Here we report a fundamental study of the binding mechanisms driven by fluorine–fluorine and electrostatic interactions between perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), an important PFAS molecule, and three types of block copolymer sorbents containing individually perfluoropolyether (PFPE) or quaternized ammonium groups, or both functional segments in combination. The results show that both the fluorine–fluorine interactions between the PFPE segment of the block copolymer and the fluorinated tail of the PFOA as well as electrostatic attraction between the quaternized ammonium group and the anionic PFOA headgroup are crucial to achieve effective PFOA sorption from aqueous solutions. The fluorine–fluorine interactions contribute to recognition of PFOA molecules via fluorophilicity, with fast exchange between bound and free PFOA being observed, while the electrostatic interactions can tightly bind PFOA, thus precluding such exchange. Both types of interaction are observed to be rapidly established within 5 min. We show that the sorbents containing both fluorinated and cationic groups have a higher PFOA removal efficiency with potentially improved sorption capacity compared with the sorbents with a single functional group and that the electrostatic attraction is stronger and dominates the fluorine–fluorine interactions when the sorbent is highly charged. Overall, these results provide important insights into designing novel sorbents for rapid and efficient PFAS removal from contaminated environments.

Abstract:<p>Photodegradation of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) by UV irradiation could remove this environmentally persistent chemical from aqueous solution, but its efficiency needs to be further optimized. This study introduced foam fractionation technique, which utilizing the surface activity of PFOS, to promote the removal efficiency of PFOS during photodegradation. Under the favorable conditions of foam fractionation (pH = 11.0; the height to diameter ratio of the reaction solution = 3:1; gas flow rate = 1.0 L/min) in a cylindrical glass reactor, PFOS photodegradation rate (20 mg/L initial concentration) was 8.76 times higher than that without foam fractionation, over a 3-hour reaction. While under neutral condition, PFOS photodegradation rate also experienced an increase of 7.43, 6.20 and 2.66 times compared to that without foam fractionation for initial concentrations of 20 mg/L, 5 mg/L and 1 mg/L, respectively. This combination of foam fractionation and photodegradation process will hopefully be used for treatment of PFOS and other per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances with surface activity and photodegradability.</p>

Abstract:Emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are highly toxic chemicals with extraodinary stability in the aquatic environment. Highly efficient adsorbents are in urgent need to address the environmental challenges caused by PFAS. Herein, we developed a novel aminated foam adsorbent with high affinity for PFAS adsorption through polymerization, amination and pyrolyzation. For initial 1 μg/L perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) solution, more than 97.9 % removal efficiency could be obatined with a rapid equilibration time of ∼ 15 min. The elevated adsorption efficiency could be explained by the synergetic effect of electrostatic/hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction, while the increase of specific surface area (SSA) also has a positive effect on PFOA adsorption. Furthermore, the sythesized polyacrylamide-polyaniline material (pyrolyzed at 301℃, PAM-PANI-2) exhibited high adaptability to different environmental influencing factors, including pH and co-existed organic matters, and presented excellent adsorption removal ability for other common PFAS except for PFOA. Moreover, it is worth noting that this foam material has advantages in regeneration compared to traditional powder adsorbents, without complicated procedures such as centrifugation and filtration. These results indicate that aminated PAM polymers are promising adsorbents in remediations of trace PFAS-contaminated water, which can give new insights to the design and application of novel polymer materials of PFAS treatments.
Efficient removal of per/polyfluoroalkyl substances from water using recyclable chitosan-coated covalent organic frameworks: Experimental and theoretical methods

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) demonstrate remarkable potential for adsorbing per/polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Nevertheless, the challenge of recycling powdered COFs hampers their practical application in water treatment. In this research, a quaternary amine COF with inherent positive surface charge was synthesised to adsorb perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) via electrostatic interactions. The COF was then combined with chitosan (CS) through a simple dissolution-evaporation process, resulting in a composite gel material termed COF@CS. The findings indicated that the adsorption capacity of COF@CS significantly surpassed that of the original COF and CS. According to the Langmuir model, COF@CS achieved a maximum PFOA capacity of 2.8 mmol g −1 at pH 5. Furthermore, the adsorption rate increased significantly to 6.2 mmol g −1 h −1 , compared to 5.9 mmol g −1 h −1 for COF and 3.4 mmol g −1 h −1 for CS. Notably, COF@CS exhibited excellent removal efficacy for ten other types of PFAS. Moreover, COF@CS could be successfully regenerated using a mixture of 70% ethanol and 1 wt% NaCl, and it exhibited stable reusability for up to five cycles. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) characterisation, and theoretical calculations revealed that the quaternary amine functional group in COF served as the primary adsorption site in the composite gel material, while the protonated amino group on CS enhanced PFOA adsorption through electrostatic interaction. This study highlights the significant practical potential of COF@CS in the removal of PFAS from aqueous solution and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Despite growing concerns about human exposure to perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), other poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) derived from aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) have garnered little attention. While these other PFASs may also be present in AFFF-impacted drinking water, their removal by conventional drinking-water treatment is poorly understood. This study compared the removal of 30 PFASs, including 13 recently discovered PFASs, from an AFFF-impacted drinking water using carbonaceous sorbents (i.e., granular activated carbon, GAC). The approach combined laboratory batch experiments and modeling: batch sorption data were used to determine partition coefficients (Kd) and calibrate a transport model based on intraparticle diffusion-limited sorption kinetics, which was used to make forward predictions of PFAS breakthrough during GAC adsorption. While strong retention was predicted for PFOS and PFOA, nearly all of the recently discovered polyfluorinated chemicals and PFOS-like PFASs detected in the AFFF-impacted drinking water were predicted to break through GAC systems before both PFOS and PFOA. These model breakthrough results were used to evaluate a simplified approach to predicting PFAS removal by GAC using compound-specific retention times on a C18 column (RTC18). Overall, this study reveals that GAC systems for the treatment of AFFF-impacted sources of water for PFOA and PFOS likely achieve poor removal, when operated only for the treatment of PFOS and PFOA, of many unmonitored PFASs of unknown toxicity.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have garnered attention as a pressing environmental issue due to their enduring presence and suspected adverse health effects. This study assessed the rejection or removal efficacy of PFAS by commercial reverse osmosis (RO) and nanofiltration (NF) membranes and examined the impacts of surfactants, ion valency and solution temperature that are inadequately explored. The results reveal that the presence of cationic surfactants such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) increased the rejection of two selected PFAS compounds, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), by binding with negatively charged PFAS and preventing them from passing through membrane pores via size exclusion, whereas the presence of anionic surfactants such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) increased the PFAS rejection because the increased electrostatic repulsion prevented PFAS from approaching and adsorbing onto the membrane surface. Moreover, aqueous ions (e.g., Al 3+ and PO 4 3− ) with higher ion valency enabled higher rejection of PFOA and PFBA through increased effective molecular size and increased electronegativity. Finally, only high solution temperature at 45 °C significantly reduced PFAS rejection efficiency because of the thermally expanded membrane pores and thus the increased leakage of PFAS. Overall, this research provides valuable insights into the various factors impacting PFAS rejection in commercial RO and NF processes. These findings are crucial for developing efficient PFAS removal methods and optimizing existing treatment systems, thereby contributing significantly to the ongoing efforts to combat PFAS contamination.
