Abstract:Device applications of shape memory polymers demand diverse shape changing geometries, which are currently limited to non-omnidirectional movement. This restriction originates from traditional thermomechanical programming methods such as uniaxial, biaxial stretching, bending, or compression. A solvent-modulated programming method is reported to achieve an omnidirectional shape memory behavior. The method utilizes freeze drying of hydrogels of polyethylene glycol networks with a melting transition temperature around 50 °C in their dry state. Such a process creates temporarily fixed macroporosity, which collapses upon heating, leading to significant omnidirectional shrinkage. These shrunken materials can swell in water to form hydrogels again and the omnidirectional programming and recovery can be repeated. The fixity ratio (R f ) and recovery ratio (R r ) can be maintained at 90% and 98% respectively upon shape memory multicycling. The maximum linear recoverable strain, as limited by the maximum swelling, is ≈90%. Amongst various application potentials, one can envision the fabrication of multiphase composites by taking advantages of the omnidirectional shrinkage from a porous polymer to a denser structure.

Abstract:Natural tissues, such as bone, tendon, and muscle, have well-defined hierarchical structures, which are crucial for their biological and mechanical functions. However, mimicking these structural features still remains a great challenge. In this study, we use ice-templated assembly and UV-initiated cryopolymerization to fabricate a novel kind of composite hydrogel which has both aligned macroporous structure at micrometer scale and a nacre-like layered structure at nanoscale. Such hydrogels are macroporous, are thermoresponsive, and exhibit excellent mechanical performance (they are tough and highly stretchable), attractive properties that have a significant impact on the wide applications of composite hydrogels, especially as tissue-engineering scaffolds. The fabrication method in this study including freeze-casting and cryopolymerization can also be applied to other materials, which makes it promising for designing and developing smart and multifunctional composite hydrogels with hierarchical structures.

Abstract:The integration of functions in materials in order to gain macroscopic effects in response to environmental changes is an ongoing challenge in material science. Here, functions on different hierarchical levels are sequentially linked to translate a pH-triggered conformational transition from the molecular to the macroscopic level to induce directed movements in hydrogels. When the pH is increased, lysine-rich peptide molecules change their conformation into a beta-hairpin structure because of the reduced electrostatic repulsion among the deprotonated amino groups. Coupled to this conformation change is the capability of the beta-hairpin motifs to subsequently assemble into aggregates acting as reversible cross links, which are used as controlling units to fix a temporary macroscopic shape. A structural function implemented into the hydrogel by a microporous architecture-enabled nondisruptive deformation upon compression by buckling of pore walls and their elastic recovery. Coupled to this structural function is the capability of the porous material to enhance the diffusion of ions into the hydrogel and to keep the dimension of the macroscopic systems almost constant when the additional cross-links are formed or cleaved as it limits the dimensional change of the pore walls. Covalent cross-linking of the hydrogel into a polymer network acted as gear shift to ensure translation of the function on the molecular level to the macroscopic dimension. In this way, the information of a directed shape-shift can be programmed into the material by mechanical deformation and pH-dependent formation of temporary net points. The information could be read out by lowering the pH. The peptides reverted back into their original random coil conformation and the porous polymer network could recover from the previously applied elastic deformation. The level of multifunctionality of the hydrogels can be increased by implementation of additional orthogonal functions such as antimicrobicity by proper selection of multifunctional peptides, which could enable sophisticated biomedical devices.

Abstract:AbstractFunctional soft materials, especially hydrogels have been widely developed to achieve various soft structures and machines. However, synthetic hydrogels commonly show formula‐dependent mechanical properties to fulfill the requirements of mechanical elasticity, stiffness, toughness, and tearing‐resistance for adapting to complex application scenario. Inspired by heterostructures and materials found in nature such as leaves and insect wings, a sequential photopolymerization process combined with site‐selective patterning exposure is reported to prepare programmable hydrogels with locally heterogeneous reinforcement skeletons, i.e., interpenetrating double networks. The heterogeneous interface between soft matrices and stiff skeletons is seamlessly interlocked through strong multiple hydrogen bonds induced by phase transition. By harnessing the size, shape, and distribution of the patterned stiff skeletons, a wide range of mechanical properties of hydrogels including modulus (0.32–5.92 MPa), toughness (0.15–18 kJ m−2), dissipated energy (1–100 kJ m−3), impact resistance, and mechanical anisotropy can be readily sculpted within one material system without needing design and optimization of the complex and elusive material formulation on demand. It is believed that this simple yet powerful method relying on heterogenous patterning would guide the development of functional hydrogel materials with programmable mechanical properties toward potential engineering applications, such as damping and flexible circuits.

Abstract:Owing to the dynamic nature and the rich library of supramolecular interactions, supramolecular shape memory polymers have shown unique benefits beyond traditional thermoset shape memory polymers including multi-stimuli response, self-healing, recyclability, and solid-state plasticity. Thanks to extensive research over the last two decades, the above characteristics have become well-established. Despite that, new material design opportunities beyond those continue to emerge in the recent five years. In particular, supramolecular shape memory polymer has been reported to possess unusually high output energy density via strain-induced formation of ordered supramolecular structures, which are beneficial for use as artificial muscles. In addition, the hydrophobic domain in a hydrogel has been demonstrated to be effective in fixing the anisotropy of the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) chains, giving rise to two-way reversible shape memory behavior in hydrogels. Intriguingly, the change in glassy transition temperature due to photo-isomerization of azobenzene moieties leads to athermal shape memory polymers for which no heating/cooling is required for the entire shape memory cycle. Rational design of a shape memory network with self-complementary hydrogen bonding interactions endows the material with superior toughness and multi-recyclability. Collectively, these recent progresses have expanded the scope of shape memory polymers, which are summarized in the first half of this article. The above developments typically take advantage of the on-off switch offered by supramolecular interactions, but their dynamic reorganization process has been by and large neglected. Several reports in the last three years have shown that this latter characteristic is uniquely useful in designing autonomous shape memory polymers for which no external stimulation is needed to trigger the shape recovery. These supramolecular autonomous shape memory polymers are discussed in the second half of this article. This class of materials utilize the time- and temperature-dependent exchange kinetics of supramolecular interactions to manipulate the entropic energy stored via spatio-temporal programming, as a way to control the shape-shifting. This autonomous shape-shifting mode differs drastically from traditional stimuli-responsive shape memory polymers and its trigger-free nature can open up new device applications in which access to external stimulation is difficult. We believe that the principle of spatio-temporal programming via supramolecular interactions can be potentially expanded to other molecular mechanisms, which will provide a new perspective for smart material design in the future. Abstract:Soft materials undergoing shape transformations in response to changes in ambient environment have potential applications in tissue engineering, robotics and biosensing. Generally, stimulus-responsive materials acquire two stable shapes corresponding to the "on" and "off" states of the external trigger. Here, we report a simple, yet versatile approach to induce multiple shape transformations of a planar hydrogel sheet, each triggered by a particular, well-defined external stimulus. The approach is based on the integration of small-scale multiple polymer components with distinct compositions in the composite gel sheet. In response to different stimuli, the structural components undergo differential swelling or shrinkage, which creates internal stresses within the composite hydrogel sheet and transforms its shape in a specific manner.

Abstract:Shape memory hydrogels (SMHs), a promising class of smart materials for biomedical applications, have attracted increasing research attention owing to their tissue-like water-rich network structure. However, preparing SMHs with high mechanical strength and body temperature-responsiveness has proven to be an extreme challenge. This study presents a facile and scalable methodology to prepare highly tough hydrogels with a body temperature-responsive shape memory effect based on synergetic hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonding. 2-Phenoxyethyl acrylate (PEA) and acrylamide were chosen as the hydrophobic monomer and the hydrophilic hydrogen bonding monomer, respectively. The prepared hydrogels exhibited a maximum tensile strength of 5.1 ± 0.16 MPa with satisfactory stretchability, and the mechanical strength showed a strong dependence on temperature. Besides, the hydrogel with 60 mol % PEA shows an excellent body temperature-responsive shape memory behavior with almost 100% shape fixity and shape recovery. Furthermore, we applied the hydrogels as a shape memory embolization plug for simulating vascular occlusion, and the embolism performance was preliminarily explored in vitro.
Development of Gelatin-Based Shape-Memory Polymer Scaffolds with Fast Responsive Performance and Enhanced Mechanical Properties for Tissue Engineering Applications

Abstract:Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) can be defined as a reversibly changing form through deformation and recovery by external stimuli. However, there remain application limitations of SMPs, such as complicated preparation processes and slow shape recovery. Here, we designed gelatin-based shape-memory scaffolds by a facile dipping method in tannic acid solution. The shape-memory effect of scaffolds was attributed to the hydrogen bond between gelatin and tannic acid, which acts as the net point. Moreover, gelatin (Gel)/oxidized gellan gum (OGG)/calcium chloride (Ca) was intended to induce faster and more stable shape-memory behavior through the introduction of a Schiff base reaction. The chemical, morphological, physicochemical, and mechanical properties of the fabricated scaffolds were evaluated, and those results showed that the Gel/OGG/Ca had improved mechanical properties and structural stability compared with other scaffold groups. Additionally, Gel/OGG/Ca exhibited excellent shape-recovery behavior of 95.8% at 37 °C. As a consequence, the proposed scaffolds can be fixed to the temporary shape at 25 °C in just 1 s and recovered to the original shape at 37 °C within 30 s, implying a great potential for minimally invasive implantation.

Abstract:The ability of shape memory polymers to change shape upon external stimulation makes them exceedingly useful in various areas, from biomedical engineering to soft robotics. Especially, shape memory hydrogels (SMHs) are well-suited for biomedical applications due to their inherent biocompatibility, excellent shape morphing performance, tunable physiochemical properties, and responsiveness to a wide range of stimuli (e.g., thermal, chemical, electrical, light). This review provides an overview of the unique features of smart SMHs from their fundamental working mechanisms to types of SMHs classified on the basis of applied stimuli and highlights notable clinical applications. Moreover, the potential of SMHs for surgical, biomedical, and tissue engineering applications is discussed. Finally, this review summarizes the current challenges in synthesizing and fabricating reconfigurable hydrogel-based interfaces and outlines future directions for their potential in personalized medicine and clinical applications.

Abstract:Shape-morphing hydrogels can be widely used to develop artificial muscles, reconfigurable biodevices, and soft robotics. However, conventional approaches for developing shape-morphing hydrogels highly rely on composite materials or complex manufacturing techniques, which limit their practical applications. Herein, we develop an unprecedented strategy to edit the shape morphing of monocomponent natural polysaccharide hydrogel films via integrating gradient cross-linking density and geometry effect. Owing to the synergistic effect, the shape morphing of chitosan (CS) hydrogel films with gradient cross-linking density can be facilely edited by changing their geometries (length-to-width ratios or thicknesses). Therefore, helix, short-side rolling, and long-side rolling can be easily customized. Furthermore, various complex artificial 3D deformations such as artificial claw, horn, and flower can also be obtained by combining various flat CS hydrogel films with different geometries into one system, which can further demonstrate various shape transformations as triggered by pH. This work offers a simple strategy to construct a monocomponent hydrogel with geometry-directing programmable deformations, which provides universal insights into the design of shape-morphing polymers and will promote their applications in biodevices and soft robotics.

Abstract:Although Nature has always been a common source of inspiration in the development of artificial materials, only recently has the ability of man-made materials to produce complex three-dimensional (3D) structures from two-dimensional sheets been explored. Here we present a new approach to the self-shaping of soft matter that mimics fibrous plant tissues by exploiting small-scale variations in the internal stresses to form three-dimensional morphologies. We design single-layer hydrogel sheets with chemically distinct, fibre-like regions that exhibit differential shrinkage and elastic moduli under the application of external stimulus. Using a planar-to-helical three-dimensional shape transformation as an example, we explore the relation between the internal architecture of the sheets and their transition to cylindrical and conical helices with specific structural characteristics. The ability to engineer multiple three-dimensional shape transformations determined by small-scale patterns in a hydrogel sheet represents a promising step in the development of programmable soft matter.

Abstract:<p>Inspired by nature, diverse biomimetic hydrogel actuators are fabricated and become one of the most essential components of bionics research. Usually, the anisotropic structure of a hydrogel actuator is generated at the early fabrication process, only a specific shape transformation behavior can be produced under external stimuli, and thus has limited the development of hydrogel actuators toward the biomimetic shape deformation behavior. Herein, a novel bilayer hydrogel having a thermoresponsive actuating layer and a metal ion‐responsive memorizing layer is proposed, therefore, a 2D hydrogel film can be fixed into various 3D shapes via supramolecular metal‐ligand coordination, with further realizing programmable 4D shape deformation under the stimulus of temperature. By manipulating the temporary shapes via shape memory behavior, various temporary anisotropic structures can be obtained via the bilayer hydrogel, thus producing diverse reversible shape deformation performances, which is expected to promote the development of intelligent polymeric materials.</p>

Abstract:Shape-memory materials are widely utilized in biomedical devices and tissue engineering, particularly for their ability to undergo predefined shape changes in response to external stimuli. In this study, a shape-transformable organohydrogel was developed by incorporating a gallium mesh into a polyacrylamide/alginate/glycerol matrix. The gallium mesh, which transitions between solid and liquid states at moderate temperatures (~29.8 °C), enhanced the hydrogel's mechanical properties and enabled shape-memory functionality. The composite organohydrogel exhibited a high elastic modulus of ~900 kPa in the solid gallium state and ~30 kPa in the liquid gallium state, enabling reversible deformation and structural stability. Glycerol improved the hydrogel's moisture retention, maintaining stretchability and repeated heating and cooling cycles. After multiple cycles of the shape-changing process, the organohydrogel retained its mechanical integrity, achieving shape-fixation and recovery ratios of ~96% and 95%, respectively. This combination of shape-memory functionality, stretchability, and mechanical stability makes this organohydrogel highly suitable for applications in flexible electronics, soft robotics, and biomedical devices, where adaptability and shape retention are essential.

Abstract:Shape-shifting polymers usually require not only reversible stimuli-responsive ability, but also strong mechanical properties. A novel shape-shifting photochromic hydrogel system was designed and fabricated by embedding hydrophobic spiropyran (SP) into double polymeric network (DN) through micellar copolymerisation. Here, sodium alginate (Alg) and poly acrylate-co-methyl acrylate-co-spiropyran (P(SA-co-MA-co-SPMA)) were employed as the first network and the second network, respectively, to realise high mechanical strength. After being soaked in the CaCl2 solution, the carboxyl groups in the system underwent metal complexation with Ca2+ to enhance the hydrogel. Moreover, after the hydrogel was exposed to UV-light, the closed isomer of spiropyran in the hydrogel network could be converted into an open zwitterionic isomer merocyanine (MC), which was considered to interact with Ca2+ ions. Interestingly, Ca2+ and UV-light responsive programmable shape of the copolymer hydrogel could recover to its original form via immersion in pure water. Given its excellent metal ion and UV light stimuli-responsive and mechanical properties, the hydrogel has potential applications in the field of soft actuators.

Abstract:The preparation of a porous shape memory hydrogel with excellent shape changing performance is a hot research topic at present. In this paper, hydrophilic hydrogels were synthesized using polypropylene glycol (PPG) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as raw materials and hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI) as crosslinking agent. The pore structures were developed by gas foaming and salt leaching methods. The results showed that the hydrophilicity of hydrogel and the swelling rate in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) increased with the increase of PEG mass fraction, the shape changing performance of hydrogels varied as well with high shape recovery rate ≥90%. The recovery speed in aqueous environment was faster than in the air. After embedding hydroxyapatite (HA) particles, the materials exhibited appropriate degradable properties and good in vitro mineralization performance. Therefore, the obtained PPG/PEG system hydrogels is expected to become an ideal platform for tissue engineering and other applications in the biomedical field.

Abstract:The review article encompasses an overview of the contemporary research related to an arsenal of smart materials i.e., shape memory hydrogels (SMHs). SMHs are instrumental in fixing temporary shapes or recovering permanent ones in response to external stimuli and are playing an increasingly important role in a diverse range of applications including soft robots, artificial mussels, embolic agents and so forth. As cynosure of smart materials, SMHs have attracted considerable attention in recent years owing to their unique functionality. We highlighted the mechanism of the shape memory effect (SME) and the design principle of SMHs coupled with recent advances in four distinct classes of SMHs where SME is triggered in response to temperature, pH, chemicals, and light. Besides, the progress in biomedical applications of SMHs has also been presented.
