Abstract:<p>Hypotheses about the mechanisms of community assembly suggest that biotic and abiotic filters constrain species establishment through selection on their functional traits. It is unclear how differences in traits influence the niche dimensions of closely‐related bird species when they co‐exist in spatiotemporally heterogeneous environments. Further, it is necessary to take into account their participation in mixed‐species flocks, social systems that can include both competition and facilitation. For six years, we conducted counts of forest bird species, and took measurements of environmental variables along an elevational gradient in the Nanling Mountains, China. To disentangle different deterministic and historical/stochastic processes between flocking and non‐flocking bird assemblages, we first compared phylogenetic and functional structure, and community‐weighted mean trait values (CWM). We further assessed elevational variations in trait–environment relationships using a combination of RLQ and fourth‐corner analyses. We found that the flocking and non‐flocking bird assemblages were structured by environmental gradients in contrasting ways. The non‐flocking assemblage showed a strong change from over‐dispersed to clustered community structure with increasing elevations, consistent with the strong selective pressures of a harsh environment (i.e. environmental filtering). The non‐flocking assemblage also displayed significant trait–environment relationships in bivariate correlations and multivariate ordination space, including specific morphological and foraging traits that are linked to vegetation characteristics (e.g. short trees at high elevations). By contrast, flocking birds were more resilient to habitat change with elevation, with relatively consistent community membership and showed fewer trait–environment associations. CWM of traits that are known to be associated with species' propensity to join mixed‐species flocks, including small body size and broad habitat specificity, were linked to the flocking assemblage consistently across the elevational gradient. Collectively, our trait‐based analyses provide strong evidence that trait–environment relationships differ between flocking and non‐flocking bird assemblages. Besides serving as bellwethers of changing environments, emergent properties of flock systems may increase the resilience of animal communities undergoing environmental change. Mixed‐species flocks present an ideal model with which to explore co‐occurrence of closely‐related species, because habitat filtering may be buffered, and the patterns observed are therefore the outcomes of species interactions including both competition and facilitation.</p>

Abstract:Mixed-species flocks of birds are distributed world-wide and can be especially dominant in temperate forests during the non-breeding season and in tropical rainforests year-round. We review from a community ecology perspective what is known about the structure and organization of flocks, emphasizing that flocking species tend to be those particularly vulnerable to predation, and flocks tend to be led by species that are able to act as sources of information about predators for other species. Studies on how flocks respond to fragmentation and land-use intensification continue to accumulate, but the question of whether the flock phenomenon makes species more vulnerable to anthropogenic change remains unclear. We review the literature on flocks in East Asia and demonstrate there is a good foundation of knowledge on which to build. We then outline potentially fruitful future directions, focusing on studies that can investigate how dependent species are on each other in flocks, and how such interdependencies might affect avian habitat selection in the different types of human-modified environments of this region.
Trait‐mediated Filtering Drives Contrasting Patterns of Species Richness and Functional Diversity Across Montane Bird Assemblages

Abstract:Aim Most studies of diversity changes along elevational gradients show a synchronous change in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity, such that all decline with elevation or show a mid-elevation peak. However, some studies show asynchronous changes, which challenge us to explain their assembly. Here we used functional trait variation and niche spacing to test the roles of environmental filtering and competition-driven niche separation in assembly and biodiversity patterns across an elevational gradient. Location Nanling Mountains, southern China. Taxon Birds (Timaliidae, Pycnonotidae and Sylviidae) Methods Breeding birds were surveyed in 2012-2017 from 300 to 1900 m ASL. We tested bird diversity pattern and community structure relevant to environmental filtering and limiting similarity by integrating functional traits and evolutionary distances, as well as vegetation heterogeneity. A null modelling approach tested specific trait variation and niche spacing in relation to habitat associations and niche segregation. Results Contrary to expectation, bird richness peaked at just below the highest site, and functional diversity declined significantly with elevation. Functional-phylogenetic distance metrics converged with increasing elevation, corresponding to strong environmental filtering and habitat change. For the spatial arrangement of specific traits, restricted dispersal ability, elevational range and clutch sizes were related to filtering effects, as indicated by trait convergence in clustered highland bird assemblages. Conversely, overdispersed lowland assemblages have evenly spaced trait values predicted by limiting similarity, including bill length, vertical stratum-use and flocking propensity. In addition, bird functional diversity was highly correlated with both vegetation productivity and tree height, which reinforces the role of filtering in structuring local bird assemblages. Main conclusions This study highlights how strong filtering can produce a counter-intuitive, contrasting pattern of changes between species richness and functional diversity. Fundamental assembly processes and species roles in ecosystems are predictable through examining key traits of life-history and foraging characteristics, and their associations with environmental variables.
Elevational patterns and assembly processes of multifaceted bird diversity in a subtropical mountain system

Abstract:Aim Mountain systems harbour disproportionate biodiversity on Earth. However, the mechanism underlying community assembly along elevational gradients remains unclear due to the complexity of environmental constraints and biotic interactions. Birds play a crucial role in mountain system and are sensitive to environmental changes, making them an ideal taxon for exploring diversity patterns and the underlying assembly processes. We aimed to identify the elevational patterns of multifaceted bird diversity and explore how different ecological processes drive community assembly. Location A 2600 m elevational gradient on the eastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. Methods We identified the elevational patterns and assembly processes of alpha‐ and beta‐diversity in the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and functional dimensions. We compared the multidimensional beta‐diversity components and assessed the response of beta‐diversity to variations in elevational and environmental distances. Finally, we examined the roles of spatial and environmental factors in structuring the diversity patterns. Results We observed bimodal elevational patterns across species richness, phylogenetic diversity, and functional diversity but distinct community structures in terms of mean pairwise phylogenetic, and functional diversity. We detected a linear decline in phylogenetic and functional diversity with increasing elevation after controlling for the confounding effect of species richness. We documented relatively high taxonomic and phylogenetic total beta‐diversity, but low functional total beta‐diversity. Turnover dissimilarity contributed much more to total beta‐diversity than nestedness‐resultant dissimilarity. The elevational patterns of standardised measures indicated that competition exclusion and environmental filtering jointly shaped the community assembly process. In general, mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, and area significantly influenced the majority of diversity measures. Conclusions Our results revealed incongruent community structures across phylogenetic and functional diversity. Additionally, our results indicated that species with similar ecological performances or distinct lineages may exhibit convergent adaptations to cold and dry environments. These findings provide insights into the mechanistic understanding of the community assembly process and assist in conservation planning in mountain systems by integrating multifaceted diversity across different dimensions.

Interspecific Sociality Alters the Colonization and Extinction Rates of Birds on Subtropical Reservoir Islands.

Abstract:Island biogeography theory has proved a robust approach to predicting island biodiversity on the assumption of species equivalency. However, species differ in their grouping behaviour and are entangled by complex interactions in island communities, such as competition and mutualism. We here investigated whether intra- and/or interspecific sociality may influence biogeographic patterns, by affecting movement between islands or persistence on them. We classified bird species in a subtropical reservoir island system into subcommunities based on their propensity to join monospecific and mixed-species flocks. We found that subcommunities which had high propensity to flock interspecifically had higher colonization rates and lower extinction rates over a 10-year period. Intraspecific sociality increased colonization in the same analysis. A phylogenetically corrected analysis confirmed the importance of interspecific sociality, but not intraspecific sociality. Group-living could enable higher risk crossings, with greater vigilance also linked to higher foraging efficiency, enabling colonization or long-term persistence on islands. Further, if group members are other species, competition can be minimized. Future studies should investigate different kinds of island systems, considering positive species interactions driven by social behaviour as potential drivers of community assembly on islands. Island Biogeography of Mixed‐species Bird Flocks: A Gregarious Nuclear Species Influences Island Area Effects

Abstract:Aim: Island biogeography theory has been extended to include various species interactions, but has yet to consider intraguild mutualisms. We compare species-area relationships for mixed-species flocks to those for the entire bird community and determine how 'nuclear' species, those important to flock formation or cohesion, which often have functional traits such as intraspecific gregariousness, influence flock species richness. We hypothesized that mixed flocks would only form on large islands where nuclear species are present. On the subset of larger islands, we expected flock species richness to rise with island area, reflecting a larger pool of species.Location: Thirty-one islands of varying area in the reservoir system of Thousand Island Lake, China.Taxon: The resident forest bird community and its subcomponent of flock participants. Similar to elsewhere in southern China, the primary nuclear species was Huet's Fulvetta (Alcippe hueti), which averaged 20 individuals per flock, and led the flocks when present.Methods: Birds were surveyed in the winter of 2017 and the autumn of 2021.Results: The probability for a flock to be present, and the species richness of birds per transect, increased with island area, but the species richness of flocks did not. Flocks with Huet's Fulvetta were only found on islands larger than 30 ha. Flocks on smaller islands formed around secondary nuclear species typical of northern Chinese flocks.Main Conclusion: Gregariousness as a functional trait may make nuclear species more susceptible to disappearing in small fragments, leading to flock collapse. The extreme gregariousness of fulvettas may also act to increase competition in the flocks they lead and limit the flocks' species richness. We encourage further comparisons of the species-area curves of mixed-species flocks and whole bird communities to better understand the influence of flocks on community assembly and species diversity.
Deterministic processes drive turnover-dominated beta diversity of breeding birds along the central Himalayan elevation gradient

Abstract:Beta diversity, the variation of community composition among sites, bridges alpha and gamma diversity and can reveal the mechanisms of community assembly through applying distance-decay models and/or partitioning beta diversity into turnover and nestedness components from functional and phylogenetic perspectives. Mountains as the most natural experiment system provide good opportunities for exploring beta diversity patterns and the underlying ecological processes. Here, we simultaneously consider distance-decay models and multiple dimensions of beta diversity to examine spatial variations of bird communities, and to evaluate the relative importance of niche-based and neutral community assembly mechanisms along a 3600-m elevational gradient in the central Himalayas, China. Our results showed that species turnover dominates taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic beta diversity. We observed strongest evidence of spatial distance decays in taxonomic similarities of birds, followed by its phylogenetic and functional analogues. Turnover component was highest in taxonomic beta diversity, while nestedness component was highest in functional beta diversity. Further, all correlations of assemblage similarity with climatic distance were higher than that with spatial distances. Standardized values of overall taxonomic, functional, and phylogenetic beta diversity and their turnover components increase with increasing elevational distance, while the standardized values of taxonomic and phylogenetic nestedness decreased with increasing elevational distance. Our results highlighted the niche-based deterministic processes in shaping elevational bird diversity patterns that were determined by the relative roles of decreasing trend of environmental filtering and increasing trend of limiting similarity along elevation distances.

Abstract:Participants in mixed-species bird flocks (MSFs) have been shown to associate with species that are similar in body size, diet, and evolutionary history, suggesting that facilitation structures these assemblages. In addition, several studies have suggested that species in MSFs resemble each other in their plumage, but this question has not been systematically investigated for any MSF system. During the nonbreeding season of 2020 and 2021, we sampled 585 MSFs on 14 transects in 2 habitats of Tongbiguang Nature Reserve in western Yunnan Province, China. We performed social network analysis and the Multiple Regression Quadratic Assignment Procedure to evaluate the effect of 4 species traits (body size, overall plumage color, distinctive plumage patterns, and diet) and evolutionary history on species association strength at the whole-MSF and within-MSF levels. All 41 significant relationships showed that species with stronger associations were more similar in their various traits. Body size had the strongest effect on association strength, followed by phylogeny, plumage patterns, and plumage color; diet had the weakest effect. Our results are consistent with the hypotheses that the benefits of associating with phenotypically similar species outweigh the potential costs of interspecific competition, and that trait matching can occur in plumage characteristics, albeit more weakly than in other traits. Several explanations exist as to why similarities in plumage may occur in MSFs, including that they could reduce predators' ability to target phenotypically "odd" individuals. Whether trait matching in plumage occurs through assortative processes in ecological time or is influenced by co-evolution requires further study.

Abstract:The merging of community ecology and phylogenetic biology allows us to link broader evolutionary processes to local ecological processes, thereby increasing our understanding of community assembly. A recurrent way to test how species assemblages respond to different abiotic conditions and evaluate the role of evolutionary constraints in community assembly is through using environmental gradients as natural treatments. Here, we combine phylogenetic and trait-based methods to evaluate how the phylogenetic diversity and composition of bird assemblages and their community-weighted traits vary along an elevational gradient in the Swiss Alps. For this purpose, we used four life-history traits considered to be key indicators of individual species response to environmental changes: clutch size, number of breeding attempts, dispersal capacity and lifespan. Controlling for phylogeny, we determined whether environmental filters (elevation, habitat type) act on these traits independently of the level of relatedness among species. We found that phylogenetic dispersion decreases with elevation, but the signature of phylogenetic clustering was weak. Phylogenetic fuzzy weighting showed that the distribution of bird species across plots was related to the two environmental gradients; nonetheless, such influence was not determined by the phylogenetic relationships in either case. That is, there are no specific clades associated with particular elevation or habitat types. We also found that high elevation communities around the treeline were composed of species with lower reproductive rates, reduced lifespan, and lower dispersal capacity, which would make them less resilient to environmental change. Although traits showed moderate phylogenetic signal, only the lifespan was phylogenetically structured. In the remaining cases, the trait-environment association was not mediated by the phylogenetic relationships among taxa. Our study indicates that evolutionary constraints do not represent a significant driver of community assembly in Alpine bird communities and support the notion that phylogeny may often not be a good proxy for traits subject to environmental filtering.

Abstract:Phenotypic variation may influence social structure if animals associate nonrandomly based on phenotypic traits. For animals that rely on cognition for survival, variation in cognitive ability may also affect social structure. Individuals with worse cognitive abilities could benefit from preferentially associating with conspecifics with better cognition, from being more gregarious, or both, allowing them access to resources. Climatic conditions influence resource availability, which may also affect the relative benefits of assortment or gregariousness, resulting in spatiotemporal variation of social patterns. Using 5 years of data, we investigated assortment by spatial cognitive ability and associations between sociality and spatial cognition in food-caching mountain chickadees, Poecile gambeli , inhabiting harsher environments at higher elevations and milder environments at lower elevations. Elevation environments differ in overwinter severity and in the harshest winter, high elevation chickadees with better spatial learning and memory abilities were less gregarious and showed lower social differentiation (or choosiness) than those with worse spatial learning and memory abilities but did not assort based on these traits. In two other seasons, including the second harshest winter, high elevation chickadees that were less cognitively flexible showed more social differentiation than those that were more cognitively flexible. In these two seasons alone, chickadees negatively assorted by spatial learning and memory performance. Chickadees from low elevations only demonstrated negative assortment in the second harshest winter. All other results were nonsignificant, suggesting that overall, individual spatial cognitive abilities or those of their associates have little influence on social preferences.

Origin of elevational replacements in a clade of nearly flightless birds – most diversity in tropical mountains accumulates via secondary contact following allopatric speciation

Abstract:Abstract Tropical mountains are biodiversity hotspots. In particular, mountains in the Neotropics exhibit remarkable beta diversity reflecting species turnover along elevational gradients. Elevational replacements of species have been known since early surveys of the tropics, but data on how such replacements arise are scarce, limiting our understanding of mechanisms underlying patterns of diversity. We employed a phylogenetic framework to evaluate hypotheses accounting for the origin of elevational replacements in the genus Scytalopus (Rhinocryptidae), a speciose clade of passerine birds with limited dispersal abilities occurring broadly in the Neotropical montane region. We found that species of Scytalopus have relatively narrow elevational ranges, closely related species resemble each other in elevational distributions, and most species replacing each other along elevational gradients are distantly related to each other. Although we cannot reject the hypothesis that a few elevational replacements may reflect parapatric speciation along mountain slopes, we conclude that speciation in Scytalopus occurs predominantly in allopatry within elevational zones, with most elevational replacements resulting from secondary contact of formerly allopatric lineages. Our study suggests that accumulation of species diversity in montane environments reflects colonization processes as opposed to in situ divergence even in dispersal-limited animals.
Spatiotemporal Distribution of Seasonal Bird Assemblages on Land-Bridge Islands: Linking Dynamic and Static Views of Metacommunities

Abstract:Background: Although assessing temporal dynamics of populations is crucial for understanding metacommunities, empirical studies have primarily analyzed only static snapshots of communities. Here, we present a holistic view of how species traits and habitat characteristics relate to metacommunity dynamics and use it to test for differences in the spatiotemporal distribution of seasonal bird assemblages.Methods: We surveyed forest birds in breeding and winter seasons within 36 islands for 9 years. We then grouped birds into four landbird assemblages, selected on the basis of published differences in biology or ecology: winter residents, migratory winter visitors, breeding summer residents, and migratory summer visitors. We estimated dynamic species colonization and extirpation through the 9-year period, and evaluated the associations among island attributes, species attributes and community composition.Results: Overall, winter and summer residents showed strong associations between composition and habitat structure of the islands. In addition, winter and summer residents on large islands had lower extirpation and turnover than winter and summer visitors. Visitor assemblages showed no significant habitat associations, and in winter had high extirpation rates and small body sizes. By contrast, local extirpation of summer visitors was correlated with local species richness, indicating a likely effect of competition on extirpation.Conclusions: Our results demonstrated repeated patterns among species composition, bird traits, habitat/island characteristics and observed metacommunity dynamics. Winter and summer residents best matched species sorting and patch dynamics, respectively, due to differences in resource availability and requirements of overwinter survival versus breeding. Summer visitors were consistent with species sorting and winter visitors were randomly distributed, likely because of interactions with resident competitors. Our results highlight that coexisting seasonal migrant and resident assemblages differ in their spatial dynamics, with consequences for relevant conservation and management strategies.

Abstract:Nestedness is a pattern frequently observed in fragmented systems and has important implications for conservation. The few existing nestedness studies in urban landscapes have focused on the resident and breeding birds, while little attention has been paid to the wintering birds. Using distribution data of 60 bird species collected on 20 urban woodlots in Hangzhou, China, we tested for the existence of the nestedness and the underlying mechanisms for breeding birds and wintering species separately. We used the line-transect method to survey bird occupancy and abundance on 20 woodlots. We used two recently developed metrics, WNODF and NODF, to estimate nestedness. We used partial Spearman rank correlations to examine the associations of nestedness and habitat variables (area, isolation, habitat richness and human disturbance). We also used information-theoretic methods based on Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) to determine ecological processes underlying nestedness. The community compositions of breeding birds and wintering species were all significantly nested. Habitat nestedness is the main driver of species nestedness for all the bird assemblages. Human disturbance played an important role in the development of species nestedness for breeding birds, but not for wintering species. Nestedness of all the bird assemblages was not due to passive sampling, selective extinction or selective colonization. From a conservation viewpoint, our results indicate that we should protect woodlots with diverse habitats priorly and refrain from using breeding birds and wintering species as surrogates for each other in developing conservation planning. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Aim: We tested the effects of season and migratory status (residents-versus-seasonal migrants) on island biogeography of bird assemblages through partitioning beta diversity into richness and turnover components and community nestedness metrics. We predicted that total beta diversity, the richness component of beta diversity and community nestedness will be lower for bird assemblages in winter than in summer, and lowest of all for winter visitors. These predictions were derived from published ideas about resource availability, movement and habitat choice in birds in different seasons. Location: Thousand Island Lake, China. Methods: Bird species were sampled using line transects on 36 islands during five breeding and winter seasons (2009-2014). Birds were grouped into assemblages of winter residents, winter visitors and summer residents. Associations between beta diversity partitioning, island area, isolation and habitat richness were tested using partial Mantel correlations. We complemented these tests with measures of nestedness and null model approaches. Results: Contrary to expectation, beta diversity, nestedness and difference of beta diversity or its components from null models were higher for winter residents than either summer resident or winter visitor assemblages. As predicted, winter visitors showed little association with habitat richness, and beta diversity was rarely different from null communities. Summer residents had the highest correlations of beta diversity components with habitat richness, but showed the lowest level of total beta diversity, a low richness component and were anti-nested (less nested than random). Main conclusions: Substantial differences were found in the biogeography of winter-versus-summer residents, and seasonal visitor (migratory)-versus-resident bird assemblages, which match expectations derived from bird biology and population ecology. Summer residents highlighted the role of habitat-related niche differences, whereas winter residents showed area-related selective extinction. By contrast, winter visitors appeared to be more randomly distributed.

Abstract:1Bamboo, although widespread, is a globally understudied habitat, but supports significant biodiversity, including specialist bird species. Mixed-species bird flocks (flocks) are an important and regular feature of forest bird communities worldwide and have been well-studied. However, how and why flocks might differ between bamboo and non-bamboo habitats is unknown. We studied flocks and their arthropod prey in rainforest and bamboo stands across two seasons in the Eastern Himalaya. Using network analysis, we compared interspecific associations within flocks, and asked if resource availability (arthropod abundance) drives flocking. Bamboo and rainforest flocks were significantly different, with bamboo flocks being more cohesive, less modular and their species more interconnected. Further, bamboo flocks were more consistent in their composition across seasons whereas rainforest flocks partially disintegrated in spring, probably because of increased arthropod abundance. In bamboo, the loss of arthropods in an entire substrate and the increase in other substrates was potentially insufficient to cease flocking in spring. Resource availability and the unique foraging behaviour of the bamboo specialists likely drive flocking in the Eastern Himalaya bamboo. Our study is among the few to describe bamboo flocks and we emphasise conserving bamboo stands to ensure persistence of this unique flock in the Eastern Himalaya.

Community modeling reveals the importance of elevation and land cover in shaping migratory bird abundance in the Andes

Abstract:The tropical Andes are characterized by extreme topographic and climatic complexity, which has likely contributed to their outstanding current species diversity, composed of many range-restricted species. However, little is known about how the distribution and abundance of highly mobile organisms, like long-distance migratory birds, varies across different land covers, elevations, and climatic conditions within the Andes. We conducted 1,606 distance-sampling point counts across the Colombian Andes, spanning elevations from 253 to 3,708 m, a range of precipitation regimes and representative land covers. We then employed a novel application of a multispecies hierarchical modeling approach to evaluate how elevation, local land cover, aboveground woody biomass, cloud cover, precipitation, and seasonality in precipitation shape the abundance of the migratory land bird community in the Andes. We detected 1,824 individuals of 29 species of migratory land birds, six of which were considered incidental in our study region. We modeled the abundance of the remaining 23 species, while considering observer and time of day effects on detectability. We found that both elevation and land cover had an overriding influence on the abundance of migratory species across the Andes, with strong evidence for a mid-elevation peak in abundance, and species-specific responses to both variables. As a community, migratory birds had the highest mean abundance in shade coffee plantations, secondary forest, and mature forest. Aboveground woody biomass did not affect the abundance of all species as a group, but a few showed strong responses to this variable. Contrary to predictions of a positive correlation between abundance and precipitation, we found no evidence for community-level responses to precipitation, aside for a weak tendency for birds to select areas with intermediate levels of precipitation. This novel use of a multispecies model sheds new light on the mechanisms shaping the winter distribution of migratory birds and highlights the importance of elevation and land cover types over climatic variables in the context of the Colombian Andes.

Abstract:AimAnticipating and mitigating the impacts of climate change on species diversity in montane ecosystems requires a mechanistic understanding of drivers of current patterns of diversity. We documented the shape of elevational gradients in avian species richness in North America and tested a suite of a priori predictions for each of five mechanistic hypotheses to explain those patterns. LocationUnited States MethodsWe used predicted occupancy maps generated from species distribution models for each of 646 breeding birds to document elevational patterns in avian species richness across the six largest U.S. mountain ranges. We used spatially explicit biotic and abiotic data to test five mechanistic hypotheses proposed to explain geographic variation in species richness. ResultsElevational gradients in avian species richness followed a consistent pattern of low elevation plateau-mid-elevation peak (as per McCain, 2009). We found support for three of the five hypotheses to explain the underlying cause of this pattern: the habitat heterogeneity, temperature, and primary productivity hypotheses. Main ConclusionsSpecies richness typically decreases with elevation, but the primary cause and precise shape of the relationship remain topics of debate. We used a novel approach to study the richness-elevation relationship and our results are unique in that they show a consistent relationship between species richness and elevation among 6 mountain ranges, and universal support for three hypotheses proposed to explain the underlying cause of the observed relationship. Taken together, these results suggest that elevational variation in food availability may be the ecological process that best explains elevational gradients in avian species richness in North America. Although much attention has focused on the role of abiotic factors, particularly temperature, in limiting species' ranges, our results offer compelling evidence that other processes also influence (and may better explain) elevational gradients in species richness.

Abstract:Mixed-species bird flocks are dynamic associations that exhibit compositional turnover over relatively small timescales. Morphological diversity and foraging behaviour of species in flocks influences the relative benefits and costs of flock participation. In addition, species within flocks are highly acoustically active. However, the role of acoustic signals in flock assembly remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the relationship between acoustic and morphological trait spaces of bird flocks in peninsular India. We found that participant species are generally more similar in body mass than expected by chance. Flocks in general were dominated by smaller-sized species. Conversely, we found that flock participants are not similar in acoustic traits. Much literature suggests that morphology and acoustic signal parameters are known to be correlated, but we present evidence to suggest that these two trait spaces are decoupled at the community scale. This may enable species to derive distinct sets of benefits from both sets of traits, and provides valuable insight into the dynamic processes driving flock assembly.

Abstract:Aim A fundamental question in community ecology is whether general assembly rules determine the structure of natural communities. Although many types of assembly rules have been described, including Diamond's assembly rules, constant body-size ratios, favoured states, and nestedness, few studies have tested multiple assembly rule models simultaneously. Therefore, little is known about the relative importance of potential underlying factors such as interspecific competition, inter-guild competition, selective extinction and habitat nestedness in structuring community composition. Here, we test the above four assembly rule models and examine the causal basis for the observed patterns using bird data collected on islands of an inundated lake.Location Thousand Island Lake, China.Methods We collected data on presence-absence matrices, body size and functional groups for bird assemblages on 42 islands from 2007 to 2009. To test the above four assembly rule models, we used null model analyses to compare observed species co-occurrence patterns, body-size distributions and functional group distributions with randomly generated assemblages. To ensure that the results were not biased by the inclusion of species with extremely different ecologies, we conducted separate analyses for the entire assemblage and for various subset matrices classified according to foraging guilds.Results The bird assemblages did not support predictions by several competitively structured assembly rule models, including Diamond's assembly rules, constant body-size ratios, and favoured states. In contrast, bird assemblages were highly significantly nested and were apparently shaped by extinction processes mediated through area effects and habitat nestedness. The nestedness of bird assemblages was not a result of passive sampling or selective colonization. These results were very consistent, regardless of whether the entire assemblage or the subset matrices were analysed.Main conclusions Our results suggest that bird assemblages were shaped by extinction processes mediated through area effects and habitat nestedness, rather than by interspecific or inter-guild competition. From a conservation point of view, our results indicate that we should protect both the largest islands with the most species-rich communities and habitat-rich islands in order to maximize the number of species preserved.

Abstract:The general predictions of climate impacts on species shifts (e.g., upward shift) cannot directly inform local species conservation, because local-scale studies find divergent patterns instead of a general one. For example, our previous study found three shift patterns with elevation (strong down-, moderate down-, and up-slope shifts) in temperate mountain forests. The divergent shifts are hypothesized to arise from both multivariate environmental variations with elevation and corresponding species-specific responses. To test this hypothesis, we sampled soils and leaves to measure elevation variations in soil conditions and determined plant responses using discriminations against heavier isotopes, carbon (13 C) and nitrogen (15 N). Functional traits of the species studied were also extracted from a public trait dataset. We found that: (1) With low soil water contents at low elevations, only the leaves of up-shifters had lower 13 C discriminations at low vs. high elevations; (2) With low soil P contents at high elevations, only the leaves of moderate down-shifters had higher 15 N discriminations at high vs. low elevations; (3) The leaves of strong down-shifters did not show significant elevation patterns of the discriminations; (4) The contrasting responses among the three types of shifters agree with their functional dissimilarity, suggested by their separate locations in a multitrait space. Taken together, the divergent shifts are associated with the elevation variations in environmental conditions and contrasting plant responses. The contrasting responses could result from the functional dissimilarity among species. Therefore, a detailed understanding of both local environmental variations and species-specific responses can facilitate accurate predictions of species shifts to inform local species conservation.
