Abstract:Lignin, as the second most abundant source in nature, is considered as a good precursor for hard carbon. However, direct carbonization of pure lignin leads to low surface area and porosity. Herein we develop a method to prepare lignin-based porous carbon by a self-template method assisted with surface modification. The oxygen-containing functional groups are introduced to regulate the surface chemistry of lignin. And the metal ions are chosen to coordinate with the oxygen-containing group in the lignin, which can form the carbonates to act as the self template to regulate the pores structure. The aromatic skeleton of lignin can also disperse the metal ions to bring uniform pore-forming sites. The results show that the carbonized lignin modified by chloroacetic acid (CCL) shows mesopores with surface area of 233.4384 m2 g-1. As anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the CCL shows a specific capacity of 500 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1. The capacity retention was 99 % after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g-1, which are superior to most reported carbon anode. This work proposes a low-cost anode for LIBs and put forward a regulation strategy for bio-mass carbon. Besides, it would reduce the discard of lignin and alleviate the pollution.
A Lignin-Based Carbon Anode with Long-Cycle Stability for Li-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Due to its wide source and low cost, biomass-based hard carbon is considered a valuable anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Lignins, as the second most abundant source in nature, are being intensively studied as candidate anode materials for next generation LIBs. However, direct carbonization of pure lignin usually leads to low specific surface area and porosity. In this paper, we design a porous carbon material from natural lignin assisted by sacrificing a metal-organic framework (MOF) as the template. The MOF nanoparticles can disperse the lignin particles uniformly and form abundant mesopores in the composites to offer fast transfer channels for Li+. The as-prepared carbon anode shows a high specific capacity of 420 mAh g-1 with the capacity retention of 99% after 300 cycles at 0.2 A g-1. Additionally, it keeps the capacity retention of 85% after long cycle of 1000 cycles, indicating the good application value of the designed anode in LIBs. The work provides a renewable and low-cost candidate anode and a feasible design strategy of the anode materials for LIBs.
Facile Fabrication of High-Performance Li-Ion Battery Carbonaceous Anode from Li-Ion Battery Waste

Abstract:With the massive application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in portable devices and electric vehicles, supplying active materials with high performances and then recycling their waste are two core issues for the development of LIBs. Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to recycle spent LIB (SLIB) graphite and reform it as a valuable anode material for LIBs. SLIB graphite has been carbon-coated using glucose (OSG@C). We systematically investigated the effects of coating amount, carbonization temperature, and carbonization time on the performance of OSG@C. As an anode for LIBs, the reconstructed graphite exhibits outstanding electrochemical performance. The reconstructed graphite can deliver a high capacity of 424.7 mAh g(-1) over 270 cycles at 1C, and also displayed an outstanding rate capability (a capacity of 212.8 mAh g(-1) is achieved at 5C). The improvement is attributed to the carbon-coated layer with a large interlayer spacing and abundant micropores, which speeds up the transport of Li+. The findings demonstrate the great potential of the SLIB graphite to be reused as high-performance anode for LIBs via a simple treatment.
High-Value Utilization of Lignin To Prepare Functional Carbons toward Advanced Lithium-Ion Capacitors

Abstract:Lithium-ion capacitor (LIC) bridging the gap between the lithium ion battery and electrochemical capacitor has attracted myriad interest. Lignin, the second most abundant natural polymer, is also the main byproduct treated as a waste in pulp and paper industry, which causes severe pollution to the aerosphere, water, and soil. Herein, for the purpose of constructing high-performance LICs and high-value utilization of biomass waste, by regulating the porous framework and graphitic degree, lignin is converted to two kinds of functional carbons that serve as the electrode materials in LICs. Lignin-derived hierarchical porous carbon (LPC-3) prepared via the combination of freeze drying and activation displays a large specific surface area of 2490 m2 g–1 and a high fraction (54%) of pores in size more than 1.25 nm. As a result, a high specific capacitance of 145 F g–1 and a superior cyclic stability of 87% retention after 5000 cycles at 1 A g–1 are achieved. Simultaneously, lignin-derived graphitic carbon (LGC-1500) synthesized with the aid of a catalyst (Fe). Thanks to a high fraction of extended graphitic structure embedded in the amorphous phase, LGC-1500 exhibits high plateau capacity (182 mA h g–1 below 0.2 V) and superior rate capability (131 mA h g–1 at 5 A g–1). Additionally, with optimization, the assembled LGC-1500//LPC-3 LIC delivers a high-energy density of 97 W h kg–1, a high power density of 11.4 kW kg–1, and a superior cyclic stability of 92.3% retention after 5000 cycles at 1 A g–1. Tailoring Lignin‐Derived Porous Carbon Toward High‐Energy Lithium‐Ion Capacitor Through Varying Sp2‐ and Sp3‐Hybridized Bonding

Abstract:The molecular condensation of lignin induced by pre‐carbonization forms polycyclic aromatic structure, leading to the augmented presence of sp2‐hybridized carbon bonding. The variation of sp2‐ and sp3‐hybridized bonding has significant effect on the pore structure evolution, providing a means to precisely tailor the microstructure of lignin‐derived carbon for lithium‐ion capacitors. Lignin‐derived porous carbon (LPC) shows great potential as electrode material for supercapacitors. However, precise control over the pore structure during the conventional carbonization–activation process remains challenging. Here, a molecular‐level strategy to tailor the pore structure through tuning inter‐/intra‐molecular bonding of lignin in a pre‐carbonization process is shown. Based on operando pyrolysis analysis, a molecular evolution model is proposed to elucidate the relationship between pre‐carbonization and the resulting porosity of LPC. Lignin undergoes a condensation process with an increase of sp2‐hybridized carbon bonding during pre‐carbonization, causing the extension of polycyclic aromatic structure and leading to an increased mesopore volume in the final porous carbon. The variation in the content ratio of sp2‐ and sp3‐hybridized carbon bonding provides insights into the spatial structure evolution of pre‐carbonized lignin, which correlates well with changes in the porous structure of LPC. The LPCs show ultrahigh specific surface area up to 3219 m2 g−1 and tailored meso‐/micropore distribution. The lithium‐ion capacitor full‐cell tests demonstrate the great potential of LPCs in energy storage applications with superior energy density and power density. This work provides a feasible strategy to precisely design the microstructure of LPC, offering promising prospects for energy storage technologies.

Abstract:Lignin is an eco-friendly, low-cost, and abundant natural biopolymer. However, few studies have explored the potential application of lignin as electrolyte matrix for lithium-ion batteries or obtained excellent cell performance using lignin based electrolyte. In this paper, lignin and poly(N-vinylimidazole)-co-poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate) are mixed thoroughly in water, then a free-standing lignin-based film is obtained by casting and drying. The resulting film shows obviously higher mechanical strength (over 10 times) than that of the pure lignin film due to the construction of internal physical cross-linking network. Through activation of the prepared film by organic electrolyte, the membrane exhibits superior electrochemical performances (such as outstanding lithium-ion transfer number (0.63) and the ability to inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites). As a result, the LiFePO4/lignin-based electrolyte/Li cell presents excellent long cycle performance (similar to 150 mAh g(-1) at 1 C more than 450 cycles) and rate capacity (110 mAh g(-1) at 10 C) at room temperature (RT), which is better than that of the cells using a commercial separator. Moreover, the LiCoO2/lignin-based electrolyte/Li cell also shows superior cell performance at RT. Thus, the lignin-based electrolyte with the outstanding comprehensive property has the potential to replace separator and to be widely applied in high-performance and high-safety LIBs.
Lignin-Based Mesoporous Hollow Carbon @ MnO2 Nanosphere Composite as an Anodic Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The lignin-based mesoporous hollow carbon@MnO2 nanosphere composites (L-C-NSs@MnO2) were fabricated by using lignosulfonate as the carbon source. The nanostructured MnO2 particles with a diameter of 10~20 nm were uniformly coated onto the surfaces of the hollow carbon nanospheres. The obtained L-C-NSs@MnO2 nanosphere composite showed a prolonged cycling lifespan and excellent rate performance when utilized as an anode for LIBs. The L-C-NSs@MnO2 nanocomposite (24.6 wt% of MnO2) showed a specific discharge capacity of 478 mAh g-1 after 500 discharge/charge cycles, and the capacity contribution of MnO2 in the L-C-NSs@MnO2 nanocomposite was estimated ca. 1268.8 mAh g-1, corresponding to 103.2% of the theoretical capacity of MnO2 (1230 mAh g-1). Moreover, the capacity degradation rate was ca. 0.026% per cycle after long-term and high-rate Li+ insertion/extraction processes. The three-dimensional lignin-based carbon nanospheres played a crucial part in buffering the volumetric expansion and agglomeration of MnO2 nanoparticles during the discharge/charge processes. Furthermore, the large specific surface areas and mesoporous structure properties of the hollow carbon nanospheres significantly facilitate the fast transport of the lithium-ion and electrons, improving the electrochemical activities of the L-C-NSs@MnO2 electrodes. The presented work shows that the combination of specific structured lignin-based carbon nanoarchitecture with MnO2 provides a brand-new thought for the designation and synthesis of high-performance materials for energy-related applications.
Pre-oxidation of lignin precursors for hard carbon anode with boosted lithium-ion storage capacity

Abstract:Lignin-derived hard carbon (HC) has great potential as energy storage materials. However, it is difficult to obtain desired electrochemical performances by direct carbonization of lignin. Herein, we demonstrate a pre-oxidation strategy to enhance the reversible capacity of hard carbon with lignin as precursor. The pre-oxidation mechanism and its influence on the microstructures of the resulted hard carbon are systematically studied. Based on in-situ FT-IR and 13C NMR spectrum, etc., it is confirmed that three dominant configurations of oxygen-containing functional groups are formed during the process, and the content of the desired carbonyl groups (C=O) reaches a maximum value at a pre-oxidation temperature of 200 oC. Meanwhile, the alkyl groups are transformed into peroxides or alcohols, contributing to intermolecular cross-linkage within lignin. As a result, the obtained material with highly random orientation nanotexture gives a much larger d002 and abundant porous structure. Benefiting from these structural merits, the optimized lignin-derived hard carbon enables excellent Li-ion storage performance with a reversible capacity of 584 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1. This work provides insights into the rational design of high-performance hard carbon anodes for Li-ion batteries and beyond.

Abstract:Most countries worldwide have committed to reaching carbon neutrality by the end of the century, with the aim to achieve Net Zero before 2060. To reduce the dependency of energy demands on fossil fuels, use of renewable energy and its gradual transition into the overall energy portfolio becomes increasingly critical. The solar and wind energy accounts for a major part of renewable energy. Considering unstable and noncontinuous production of electricity from these two sources, energy storage becomes essential. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the most favorable choice of energy storage due to their good electrochemical performance (high capacity, low charge leakage and good cycle performance) and safety, in particular for portable (3C products, electric vehicles and drones) and stationary applications as well as for emergency electricity supply. However, the specific capacity of graphite, the most common commercial anode material, is reaching its theoretical limit, posing great challenges for improving the overall capacity of LIBs. It is therefore necessary to develop anode materials of higher capacity and better cycle performance. Biomass-derived carbon materials are ideal candidates for further enhancing the performance of LIBs due to their special microstructures, functional diversity and easy structure regulation. Most of these materials can reach capacities exceeding 500 mAh g-1, even the best for more than 1,000 mAh g-1 combined with other anode materials. This review provides an in-depth analysis of diverse carbon sources derived from biomass, categorized based on their distinct structural characteristics, with the focus on evaluating the current roles and bottlenecks of carbon as a component of the electrode materials used in LIBs. The failure mechanisms associated with biomass-derived carbon in LIBs are summarized, with potential solutions to these issues being proposed. The potential challenges and prospects for biomass-based LIBs are identified and thoroughly discussed. Overall, this review aims to serve as a resource for the strategic design and advancement of carbon-based materials, to achieve next-generation LIBs of superior performance.

Abstract:Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have been increasingly popular in recent years in response to the growing need for large-scale energy storage applications and systems. However, due to the scarcity of lithium resources and their unequal distribution in the earth's crust, the present energy crisis has encouraged research into producing greener and more sustainable alternatives. Due to the relatively high abundance of sodium compared to lithium, sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) raise hope as an alternative and more sustainable chemistry.[1] Unfortunately, it is typically found that anode materials for LIBs are not suited for SIBs. Graphite, which is frequently used as an anode material in commercial LIBs, is incapable of achieving efficient Na + insertion/extraction due to a lack of interlayer spacing (Na + has a radius 39% bigger than Li + ) and high energy involved in the formation of Na-C bonds..[2] So, to develop mechanically flexible electrode materials that combine high electrochemical performance with low-cost is still a challenge for its applications in a world subjected to severe shortage of resources and various environmental issues. The problem can be solved by selecting "green" and economically viable precursors and synthesis procedures. Carbon nanofibers derived from renewable biomass materials exhibit great potential as electrode materials with obvious cost and environmental benefits. Lignin, a heterogeneous and amorphous polymer found in many plants, and it is estimated that annual natural lignin production is 5-36×10 8 tons, of which more than 70 million tons are commercialized mainly from the paper industry as a by-product, is a possible choice as the precursor for carbon nanofibers due to its low cost and bio-renewable nature. In this work, mechanically flexible and 3D interconnected lignin/polylactic acid (PLA) carbon nanofibers with different amounts of lignin were prepared by electrospinning, then stabilized and carbonized. The obtained carbon nanofibers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy to investigate their morphology. To determine the carbon yield thermogravimetric analysis has been performed. Surface area, pore radius and volume values were obtained by performing BET analysis from N 2 sorption isotherms. The obtained carbon nanofibers were tested as anode materiasl in 1 mol/L NaCF 3 SO 3 in diethylene glycol dimethyl ether (DEGDME) electrolyte. Results show that lignin derived carbon nanofibers deliver a high reversible capacity of 330 mAhg -1 at the current density of 100 mAg -1 in the first cycle. Additionally, these carbon nanofibers showed excellent cycling and high-rate performance and maintained a capacity of up to 200 mAhg -1 for over 200 cycles. It is therefore, demonstrated that lignin derived carbon nanofibers prepared under appropriate conditions are promising anode material candidates for sodium-ion batteries. References: [1] L. Yue, H. Lignin-derived Fused Electrospun Carbon Fibrous Mats As High Performance Anode Materials for Lithium Ion Batteries.

Abstract:A novel biomass-based nitrogen-doped freestanding fused carbon fibrous mat was fabricated from lignin-polyethylene oxide (PEO) (90:10) blend via electrospinning followed by carbonization and thermal annealing in the presence of urea. The morphology and structure of the carbon fibers were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis, and their electrochemical properties were investigated for the first time as anode in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). The fused carbon fibers without nitrogen doping exhibited high specific capacity up to 445 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 30 mA g(-1) (comparable to polyacrylonitrile (PAN) derived carbon nanofibers) and good cyclic stability at different current rates. After thermal annealing to as high as 576 mA h g(-1) and still maintained a good capacity of about 200 mAh g(-1) even at a high current rate of 2000 mA g(-1). Abstract:There is a large amount of lignin in the black liquor of papermaking, which can be made into carbon material and applied to the negative pole of lithium ion battery. It can not only make rational use of resources, but also reduce environmental pollution. The relationship among pore size, specific surface area and pore distribution of carbon materials are studied. Porous carbon materials were synthesized by self-assembly and high-temperature calcination. By constructing porous carbon spheres and changing the morphology, the anode materials of lithium ion batteries with large specific surface area and high specific capacity can be obtained. Raman spectrum shows that graphite structures are in porous carbon spheres. BET results show that porous carbon spheres have a large specific surface area (525.0-867.8 m2/g). The sulfur element in lignosulfonic acid can also improve the performance of the electrode. The results of constant current charging-discharging show that the specific capacitance of the samples in the first charge and discharge is 904.3 mAh/g and the unit capacitance of the porous carbon material is 557.9 mAh/g after 50 charging-discharging times when the current density is 1.0 A/g.

Abstract:This comprehensive study sheds light on the promising potential of lignin-derived carbonaceous materials as sustainable and cost-effective anode materials for sodium-ion batteries, contributing to the development of eco-friendly energy storage technologies. Lignin, a complex and abundant biopolymer, undergoes a facile pyrolysis process to produce carbonaceous materials. The unique microstructure of lignin-derived carbon, characterized by a relatively high surface area and interconnected porous network, facilitates efficient sodium ion diffusion and accommodates volume changes during cycling. The effects of pre-treatment methods, carbonization conditions, and structural modifications of lignin on the electrochemical performance are systematically investigated. Furthermore, the electrochemical mechanisms underlying the sodiation/desodiation processes in lignin-derived carbon (LDC) based anodes are elucidated through advanced characterization techniques, including in situ spectroscopy and microscopy. Among the different hard carbon materials, pre-pyrolyzed lignin-derived carbon LDC-300-1400 (300 shows which pre-treatment pyrolysis temperature was used and 1400°C is the post-pyrolysis temperature) shows the most favourable outcomes, demonstrating a reversible capacity of 359 mAh g −1 , 1st cycle coulombic efficiency of 81%, and good rate capabilities. Hydrothermally pre-treated LDCs show a slightly lower specific capacity value reaching up to 337 mAh g −1 .

Abstract:Bio-based carbon fibers derived from lignin have gained significant attention due to their diverse and renewable sources, ease of extraction, and low cost. However, the current limitations of low specific surface area and insufficient electrical conductivity hinder the widespread application of lignin-derived carbon fibers (LCFs). In this work, highly conductive and porous LCFs are developed through melt-blowing, pretreatment, and carbonization processes. The effects of the carbonization temperature and heating rate on the structures and properties of the LCFs are systematically investigated. The resultant LCFs exhibit high electrical conductivity (71 400 S m-1) and a large specific surface area (923 m2 g-1). The assembled lithium-ion battery based on the LCF anodes demonstrates a long cycle life of >800 cycles and a high specific capacity of 466 mA h g-1. The findings of this study hold practical significance for promoting the utilization of lignin in the fields of energy storage, adsorption, and beyond.

Abstract:Exploring advanced electrode materials with high lithium storage capacity and long cycling stability is of great importance for further development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Herein, metal sulfide nano-frameworks anchored into 3D honeycomb-like porous carbon nanofibers are well designed and fabricated by electro-blowing spinning method and subsequent carbonization process. The effects of Ni/Co ratios on the nano-frameworks particle size, specific surface area and pore size distribution of fibers are systematically studied. Noticeably, the obtained fibers are crosslinked with each other to form a network film using as freestanding anode of LIBs, which avoids the cumbersome slurry-casting process. Moreover, the porous metal sulfide nano-frameworks meet the demand of high capacity while offering abundant cavities to accommodate volume expansion. More importantly, the 3D honeycomb-like porous carbon nanofibers as an ideal matrix not only provide enough buffer zones to alleviate volume expansion, but also shorten the diffusion pathways of electrons/ions. Benefiting from the advantages of structural feature, the optimized freestanding anode delivers an excellent lithium storage performance, including a high reversible capacity of 736 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles at 0.2 A g−1 and a long cycling stability of 73.5% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 1 A g−1.

Abstract:Lignin is the most abundant aromatic material in the Earth's terrestrial ecosystems. However, very few studies have been conducted on the potential application of lignin derivatives as fillers for electrolytes in lithium batteries to determine cell performance. Herein, a novel electrochemically stable composite polymer electrolyte (CPE) containing a lignin derivative and dilignol was exploited for battery application for the first time. The lignin derivatives improved both the ionic conductivity and mechanical performance of the polymer-based electrolytes. The resulting alterations in the coordination number led to enhanced Li + mobility and consequently, increased conductivity. Notably, the LiFePO 4 /Li cell had good stability and recovery capacity, and the Coulombic efficiency was approximately 100%, with a capacity of more than 150 mAh g −1 .

Abstract:Abstract The utilization of binders has severely hindered ionic diffusion and electron transfer in the traditional lithium‐ion battery. Herein, a self‐standing hard carbon film using nanocellulose as precursor has been constructed as binder‐free electrodes via two‐step thermal treatment. The cyclization and aromatization of small molecular fragments promote the formation of hyper‐crosslinked framework with abundant welded junctions. Importantly, carbon nanofibers not only serve as an inter‐connected conductive network for fast electron transfer, but also as an interlinked mechanical skeleton for convenient Li + diffusion and electrode structural stability. Furthermore, the optimized carbon film, with accessible redox‐active carbonyl groups (CO) and abundant micropores, is beneficial for Li + accommodation. It exhibits high reversible capacity of 513.1 mAh g −1 at 50 mA g −1 and excellent cycle stability to extend over 1000 cycles without signs of decay. Abstract:Lignin, a biomass derived polymer, has gained considerable recognition as a highly promising precursor of hard carbon primarily due to its ample reserve, eco‐friendliness, and cost‐effectiveness. However, lignin‐derived hard carbon via direct carbonization generally yields suboptimal performance for sodium storage due to the unsuitable microstructure. Herein, a simple phytic acid activation combined high‐temperature annealing strategy is proposed to regulate the microstructure of lignin‐derived hard carbon for high‐performance sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) anode. Phytic acid activation not only reduces the ordering and creates abundant closed pores through improving the crosslinking degree and thermal stability of lignin but also introduces P heteroatoms to effectively expand the interlayer spacing of the derived hard carbon. High‐temperature carbonization further increases the size of closed pores, leading to a more favorable sodium storage in the plateau region. Consequently, the optimal phytic acid activating lignin derived hard carbon (PLHC 1300) delivers a high capacity of 380.3 mAh g−1 with an enhanced plateau capacity ratio of near 68.1% at 30 mA g−1, and achieves a capacity retention of near 100% after 150 cycles at 1 A g−1. This work significant advances the application of lignin in energy storage and contributes to the progression of commercial SIBs.

Abstract:Silicon-based materials are considered to be potential anode materials for Li-ion batteries due to their high electrochemical capacity, but their high volume change during charging and discharging, bad cycle life and low first Coulombic efficiency are the major problems that prevent their commercialization. Carbon materials have excellent electrical properties and can be used to cushion the expansion of silicon volume while simultaneously strengthening the electrical conductivity of the cathode material, which can secure a very high specific capacity while also increasing its cycling stability. In this study, a lignin-based phenolic resin (deep eutectic solvent-treated alkaline lignin) was used as the carbon source and Si nano-powder as the silicon source. The lignin-based phenolic resin was coated on the surface of silicon nanoparticles, and the carbon layer was obtained by carbonizing the outer layer of the resin through high-temperature calcination. The morphological composition of carbon and silicon was tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy, and the carbon layer was found to be uniformly coated on the surface of the silicon nanoparticles. The electrochemical properties of the samples were also tested. Compared with pure phenolic resin-coated silicon, the cycling performance of lignin-based phenolic resin-coated silicon nanoparticles was significantly improved, with the best electrochemical performance of Si/C-LPR with an initial specific capacity of 782.45 mA h g −1 and a specific capacity of 605.43 mA h g −1 after 100 cycles (0.5 A g −1 ).
