Abstract:Implant-related infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria remain a major challenge faced by orthopedic sur-geons. Furthermore, ideal prevention and treatment methods are lacking in clinical practice. Here, based on the antibacterial and osteogenic properties of Zn alloys, Ag and Li were selected as alloying elements to prepare biodegradable Zn-Li-Ag ternary alloys. Li and Ag addition improved the mechanical properties of Zn-Li-Ag alloys. The Zn-0.8Li-0.5Ag alloy exhibited the highest ultimate tensile strength (>530 MPa). Zn-Li-Ag alloys showed strong bactericidal effects on methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in vitro. RNA sequencing revealed two MRSA-killing mechanisms exhibited by the Zn-0.8Li-0.5Ag alloy: cellular metabolism disturbance and induction of reactive oxygen species production. To verify that the therapeutic potential of the Zn-0.8Li-0.5Ag alloy is greater than that of Ti intramedullary nails, X-ray, micro-computed tomography, microbiolog-ical, and histological analyses were conducted in a rat femoral model of MRSA-induced osteomyelitis. Treatment with Zn-0.8Li-0.5Ag alloy implants resulted in remarkable infection control and favorable bone retention. The in vivo safety of this ternary alloy was confirmed by evaluating vital organ functions and pathological morphologies. We suggest that, with its good antibacterial and osteogenic properties, Zn-0.8Li-0.5Ag alloy can serve as an orthopedic implant material to prevent and treat orthopedic implant-related infections.
Zinc Alloy-Based Bone Internal Fixation Screw with Antibacterial and Anti-Osteolytic Properties

Abstract:There is no targeted effective treatment for patients undergoing internal fixation surgery/two-stage total joint revision surgery with a high risk of postoperative infection and osteolysis, while the rate of reoperation due to infection and osteolysis remains high. In this study, we report a pioneering application of implants made of biodegradable Zn–Ag alloy with active antibacterial and anti-osteolytic properties in three classical animal models, illustrating antibacterial, anti-osteolysis, and internal fixation for fractures. The antibacterial activity of the Zn–2Ag alloy was verified in a rat femur osteomyelitis prevention model, while the anti-osteolytic properties were evaluated using a mouse cranial osteolysis model. Moreover, the Zn–2Ag based screws showed similar performance in bone fracture fixation compared to the Ti–6Al–4V counterpart. The fracture healed completely after 3 months in the rabbit femoral condyle fracture model. Furthermore, the underlying antibacterial mechanism may include inhibition of biofilm formation, autolysis-related pathways, and antibiotic resistance pathways. Osseointegration mechanisms may include inhibition of osteoclast-associated protein expression, no effect on osteogenic protein expression, and no activation of related inflammatory protein expression. The empirical findings here reveal the great potential of Zn–Ag-based alloys for degradable biomaterials in internal fixation surgery/two-stage total joint revision surgery for patients with a high risk of postoperative infection and osteolysis.
Evaluation on the corrosion resistance, antibacterial property and osteogenic activity of biodegradable Mg-Ca and Mg-Ca-Zn-Ag alloys

Abstract:The rapid degradation of magnesium (Mg)-based implants in physiological environment limits its clinical applications, and alloying treatment is an effective way to regulate the degradation rate of Mg-based materials. In the present study, three Mg alloys, including Mg-0.8Ca (denoted as ZQ), Mg-0.8Ca-5Zn-1.5Ag (denoted as ZQ71) and Mg-0.8Ca-5Zn-2.5Ag (denoted as ZQ63), were fabricated by alloying with calcium (Ca), zinc (Zn) and silver (Ag). The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion tests and in vitro degradation evaluation demonstrated that the three Mg alloys exhibited distinct corrosion resistance, and ZQ71 exhibited the lowest degradation rate in vitro among them. After addition of Zn and Ag, the antibacterial potential of Mg alloys was also enhanced. The in vitro cell experiments showed that all the three Mg alloys had good biocompatibility. After implantation in a rat femoral defect, ZQ71 showed significantly higher osteogenic activity and bone substitution rate than ZQ63 and ZQ, due to its higher corrosion resistance as well as the stimulatory effects of the released metallic ions. In addition, the average daily degradation rate of each Mg alloy in vivo was significantly higher than that in vitro, as could be due to the implantation site located in the highly vascularized trabecular region. Importantly, the correlations between the in vitro and in vivo degradation parameters of the Mg alloys were systematically analyzed to find out the potential predictors of the in vivo degradation performance of the materials. The current work not only evaluated the clinical potential of the three biodegradable Mg alloys as bone grafts but also provided a feasible approach for predicting the in vivo degradation behavior of biodegradable materials.

Abstract:Biodegradable zinc (Zn) alloys are promising implant materials to restore bone defects in orthopedics. Adding silver (Ag) to Zn not only enhances its mechanical properties but also improves its antibacterial properties. However, the regular pattern of Ag composition on the properties of Zn-xAg alloys remains unclear. In this paper, Zn-Ag alloys with different Ag contents ranging from 0.5 to 6.0% were prepared by casting process and were systematically investigated both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanical tests suggest that the increase of Ag content enhanced the yield strength (YS), ultimate tensile strength (UTS), Vickers hardness, and elongation. Compared with pure Zn, the maximum YS, UTS, Vickers hardness, and elongation were achieved at Zn-6Ag, which were increased by 267%, 295%, 115%, and 172%, respectively. The degradation rate increased and the antibacterial properties were enhanced accordingly. All 25% and most 50% extracts of Zn-Ag alloys significantly promoted the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 cells, except for 50% Zn-6Ag extracts showing cytotoxicity. In the rat femoral condyle model, Zn-2Ag and Zn-4Ag alloys exhibited enhanced osteogenic performance at the early stage of implantation compared with pure Zn. Zn-Ag alloys (especially Zn-2Ag and Zn-4Ag) are identified as promising bone repair materials.

We have innovatively prepared Zn-Cu alloys to achieve outstanding material and antibacterial properties. In this study, we systematically assessed the material properties and antibacterial activity of these Zn-Cu alloys. Our results showed that the Zn-2Cu alloy had the best mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and osteogenic properties. Findings of microbial cultures, CLSM, SEM, and TEM indicated that Zn-2Cu alloy can inhibit both coagulase-positive and coagulase-negative staphylococci, as well as antibiotic-resistant strains (MRSA and MRSE), by preventing the bacteria adhesion and the biofilm formation. Zn-2Cu alloy could broadly affect the expression of MRSA genes associated with adhesion, autolysis, biofilm formation, virulence, and drug resistance. A rat femur intramedullary nail infection-prevention model was established and the Zn-2Cu alloy-treated group showed significant antibacterial activity against MRSA and reduced the inflammatory toxic side-effects and infection-related bone loss. Collectively, our results indicate the potential utility of Zn-Cu alloy implants with 2 wt% Cu in treating orthopedic infections.

Abstract:Implant-associated infection (IAI) is one of the major challenges in orthopedic surgery. The development of implants with inherent antibacterial properties is an effective strategy to resolve this issue. In recent years, biodegradable alloy materials have received considerable attention because of their superior comprehensive performance in the field of orthopedic implants. Studies on biodegradable alloy orthopedic implants with antibacterial properties have gradually increased. This review summarizes the recent advances in biodegradable magnesium- (Mg-), iron- (Fe-), and zinc- (Zn-) based alloys with antibacterial properties as orthopedic implant materials. The antibacterial mechanisms of these alloy materials are also outlined, thus providing more basis and insights on the design and application of biodegradable alloys with antibacterial properties as orthopedic implants.

Abstract:Reasonable optimization of degradation rate, antibacterial performance and biocompatibility is crucial for the development of biodegradable zinc alloy medical implant devices with antibacterial properties. In this study, various amounts of Mg elements were incorporated into Zn5Cu alloy to modulate the degradation rate, antibacterial properties and biocompatibility. The effects of Mg contents on the microstructure, corrosion behavior, antibacterial properties and biocompatibility of Zn-5Cu-xMg alloy were extensively investigated. The results revealed that with an increase of Mg content, the amount of Mg2Zn11 phase increased and its galvanic effect with the Zn matrix was enhanced, which accelerated the corrosion process and led to higher corrosion rate and high degradation rate of the alloy. Additionally, there was an increased release of Mg2+ and Zn2+ ions from the alloy which imparted excellent resistance against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and improved biocompatibility, subcutaneous antibacterial and immune microenvironment regulation properties. Zn-5Cu-2 Mg exhibited superior antibacterial ability, cell compatibility, proliferation effect, subcutaneous antibacterial and immune microenvironment regulation performances, which can work as a promising candidate of biodegradable antibacterial medical implants.

An adaptive biodegradable zinc alloy with bidirectional regulation of bone homeostasis for treating fractures and aged bone defects

Abstract:Healing of fractures or bone defects is significantly hindered by overactivated osteoclasts and inhibited osteogenesis in patients with abnormal bone metabolism. Current clinical approaches using titanium alloys or stainless steel provide mechanical support but have no biological effects on bone regeneration. Therefore, designing and fabricating degradable metal materials with sufficient mechanical strength and bidirectional regulation of both osteoblasts and osteoclasts is a substantial challenge. Here, this study first reported an adaptive biodegradable Zn-0.8 Mg alloy with bidirectional regulation of bone homeostasis, which promotes osteogenic differentiation by activating the Pi3k/Akt pathway and inhibits osteoclast differentiation by inhibiting the GRB2/ERK pathway. The anti-osteolytic ability of the Zn-0.8 Mg alloy was verified in a mouse calvarial osteolysis model and its suitability for internal fracture fixation with high-strength screws was confirmed in the rabbit femoral condyle fracture model. Furthermore, in an aged postmenopausal rat femoral condyle defect model, 3D printed Zn-0.8 Mg scaffolds promoted excellent bone regeneration through adaptive structures with good mechanical properties and bidirectionally regulated bone metabolism, enabling personalized bone defect repair. These findings demonstrate the substantial potential of the Zn-0.8 Mg alloy for treating fractures or bone defects in patients with aberrant bone metabolism.

Abstract:To meet the growing demand for antibacterial implants for bone-implant-associated infection therapy and avoid the adverse effects of secondary surgery, a degradable platform with pH responsiveness and ion-associated antibacterial properties was constructed. A small amount of Sn added to Mg-1Zn alloy reduces the biocorrosion rate, which can be attributed to Sn participation in outer-layer film formation, significantly reducing the biocorrosion rate and hydrogen evolution rate after implantation in vivo. These Mg alloys, which are susceptible to degradation in the acidic bacterial microenvironment, degrade by releasing Mg, Zn and Sn, producing favorably alkaline and antibacterial conditions. Samples with the composition of Mg-1Zn-0.5Sn were found to be beneficial for promoting initial cell adhesion and proliferation, resulting in improved biocompatibility and biosafety. The biocompatibility of this alloy was confirmed by the healthy behavior of animals and the absence of acute or chronic toxicity in the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Our results demonstrate that Mg-1Zn-0.5Sn is safe for biological systems, enabling its efficacious use in biomedical applications.

Abstract:Bone implants are expected to possess antibacterial ability and favorable biodegradability. Ag possesses broad-spectrum antibacterial effects through destroying the respiration and substance transport of bacteria. In this study, Ag was introduced into Mg-3Zn-0.5Zr (ZK30) via selective laser melting technology. Results showed that ZK30-Ag exhibited a strong and stable antibacterial activity against the bacterium Escherichia coli. Moreover, the degradation resistance was enhanced due to the comprehensive effect of positive shifted corrosion potential (from -1.64 to -1.53 V) and grains refinement. The positive shifted corrosion potential reduced the severe galvanic corrosion by lowering the corrosion potential difference between the matrix and the second phase. Meanwhile, the introduction of Ag caused the grain refinement strengthening and precipitated-phase strengthening, resulting in improved compressive yield strength and hardness. Furthermore, ZK30-0.5Ag exhibited good biocompatibility. It was suggested that Ag-modified ZK30 was potential candidate for bone implants.

Abstract:Zn–Mg–Fe alloy possesses good biocompatibility.Zn–Mg–Fe alloy demonstrates a uniform slowing-down degradation rate in vivoNo degradation differences are observed in different sites, which supports the design of degradable osteosynthesis systems.The degradation products are zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide, hydrozincite, and hopeite.Zn–Mg–Fe alloy is a promising candidate for an osteosynthesis system.Zinc is generally considered to be one of the most promising materials to be used in biodegradable implants, and many zinc alloys have been optimized to improve implant biocompatibility, degradation, and mechanical properties. However, long-term degradation leads to the prolonged presence of degradation products, which risks foreign body reactions. Herein, we investigated the in vivo biocompatibility and degradation of a biodegradable Zn–Mg–Fe alloy osteosynthesis system in the frontal bone, mandible, and femur in beagles for 1 year. Results of the routine blood, biochemical, trace element, and histological analyses of multiple organs, peripheral blood CD4/CD8a levels, and serum interleukin 2 and 4 levels showed good biocompatibility of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy. Zinc content analysis revealed zinc accumulation in adjacent bone tissue, but not in the liver, kidney, and spleen, which was related to the degradation of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy. The alloy demonstrated a uniform slowing degradation rate in vivo. No degradation differences in the frontal bone, mandible, and femur were observed. The degradation products included zinc oxide [ZnO], zinc hydroxide [Zn(OH)2], hydrozincite [Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2], and hopeite [Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O]. Synergistic release of copper and lithium components in biodegradable zinc alloy for osteoimmunomodulation

Abstract:Zinc (Zn)-based alloys have emerged as promising bioresorbable metals for orthopedic implants because of their favorable combination of moderate degradation rates, good mechanical properties, and biocompatibility. In addition, the performance of bone implants relies heavily on their osteointegration ability, which is closely related to the immune responses triggered after implantation. In this study, two Zn-based alloys, Zn–2Cu and Zn–2Cu–0.8Li were developed, to improve the comprehensive properties of Zn implants. The introduction of copper (Cu) and lithium (Li) via alloying improved the hardness and localized corrosion resistance of Zn-based specimens. Both the Zn alloys exhibited enhanced adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenic differentiation behaviors when tested with MC3T3-E1 cells. Importantly, the immune response of RAW264.7, mediated by the two Zn alloys, with pure Zn as a control was systematically investigated. The results demonstrated that the synergistic release of Cu 2+ and Li + played a pivotal role in promoting the anti-inflammatory and osteoimmunomodulatory properties of degradable Zn. By alloying with Cu and Li, we achieved sequential and sustained ion release, resulting in the synergistic enhancement of osteoimmunomodulation through the modulation of the JAK-STAT signaling pathway. Finally, the Zn-based specimens were evaluated in vivo using rat mandibular defect models. After 8 weeks, the Zn–2Cu–0.8Li group exhibited significantly higher bone regeneration than the Zn–2Cu and pure Zn groups. These findings highlight the beneficial immune response and potential of Zn–Cu–Li alloys as novel biodegradable materials for orthopedic implants. Grapical abstract

Abstract:Most of the magnesium (Mg) alloys possess excellent biocompatibility, mechanical property and biodegradability in orthopedic applications. However, these alloys may suffer from bacterial infections due to their insufficient antibacterial capability. In order to reduce the post-surgical infections, a series of biocompatible Mg-1Ca-0.5Sr-xZn (x=0, 2, 4, 6) alloys were fabricated with the addition of antibacterial Zn with variable content and evaluated in terms of their biocompatibility and antibacterial property. The in vitro corrosion study showed that Mg-1Ca-0.5Sr-6Zn alloys exhibited a higher hydrogen evolution volume after 100 h immersion and resulted in a higher pH value of the immersion solution. Our work indicated that Zn-containing Mg alloys exhibited good biocompatibility with high cell viability. The antibacterial studies reveal that the number of bacteria adhered on all of these Mg alloy samples diminished remarkably compared to the Ti-6Al-4V control group. We also found that the proliferation of the bacteria was inhibited by these Mg alloys extracts. Among the prepared alloys, Mg-1Ca-0.5Sr-6Zn alloy not only exhibited a strong antibacterial effect, but also promoted the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblasts, suggesting that it is a promising alloy with both good antibacterial property and good biocompatibility for use as an orthopedic implant.

Although magnesium (Mg) and its alloys are considered promising biodegradable bone implants, their role in neutrophil-mediated antibacteria has not yet been examined. Considering the rapid corrosion of Mg, it is necessary to develop methods to inhibit its corrosion. To solve these issues, a zinc-doped ferric oxyhydroxide nano-layer modified plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO)-coated Mg alloy (PEO-FeZn) was developed in this study, and its antibacterial, immune anti-infective, and osteogenic ability were systematically evaluated. The results showed that PEO-FeZn nano-layer enhanced the corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, bactericidal activity, and osteoblastic differentiation activity of the Mg alloy. Moreover, PEO-FeZn nano-layer inhibited immune evasion-related gene expression and contributed to the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) by activating the extracellular release of DNA fibers and granule proteins, and thereby suppressing bacterial invasion and promoting osseointegration in vivo in Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus)-infected rat femurs. Overall, the findings of this study could serve as a reference for the fabrication of highly biocompatible and corrosion resistant Mg alloys to address the challenges of IAI and osseointegration disorders.Statement of significanceThe widely used metallic biomaterials usually come with the risk of IAI. As the first responder around the biomaterials, neutrophils could form NETs to defense against microorganism and promote tissue remodeling. Therefore, biomaterials addressing antibacterial and neutrophils-modulatory strategies are highly necessary in reducing IAI. To solve these issues, we grew PEO-FeZn nano-layers in situ on Mg alloy using a simple and green technique. The nano-layer not only enhanced the corrosion resistance and biocompatibility of Mg alloy, but also elevated the antibacterial and osteogenesis capability. Moreover, nano-layer contributed to NETs formation, thereby suppressing bacterial invasion and even promoting osseointegration in S.aureus-infected femurs. Accordingly, this functionalized multilayer coating with antibacterial immunity represents a novel therapeutic strategy for IAI and weak osseointegration.

In vitro and in vivo studies of Zn-Mn biodegradable metals designed for orthopedic applications

Abstract:In recent years, Zn-based materials provide a new option as biodegradable metals for orthopedic applications. To improve the low strength and brittle nature of pure Zn, small amounts of alloying element Mn (0.1, 0.4 and 0.8 wt.%) were added into Zn to fabricate binary Zn-Mn alloys. An extremely high elongation (83.96 +/- 2.36%) was achieved in the resulting Zn-0.8 wt.%Mn alloy. Moreover, Zn-Mn alloys displayed significantly improved cytocompatibility as compared to pure Zn, according to cell proliferation and morphology analyses. More importantly, a significantly improved osteogenic activity was verified after adding Mn regarding ALP activity and osteogenic expression. Furthermore, Zn-0.8 wt.%Mn alloy scaffolds were implanted into the rat femoral condyle for repairing bone defects with pure Ti as control. Enhanced osteogenic activities were confirmed for Zn-0.8Mn alloy in contrast to pure Ti based on Micro-CT and histological results, and favorable in vivo biosafety of Zn-0.8Mn alloy was verified by H&E staining and blood tests. The exceptional mechanical performance and favorable osteogenic capability render Zn-Mn alloy a promising candidate material in the treatment of bone defects or fracture repair. Statement of Significance The element Mn, on the one hand, as an essential trace element in the human body, promotes cell proliferation, adhesion, spreading, and regulates bone metabolism; on the other hand, it could significantly improve the ductility of Zn alloys. Here, we systematically reported the biocompatibility and biofunctionality of binary biodegradable Zn-Mn alloys in the bone environment. The Zn-Mn alloys promoted MC3T3-E1 cell proliferation, adhesion, spreading, and osteogenic differentiation in vitro. Furthermore, a rat femoral condyle defect model was established; porous Zn-Mn alloy scaffolds were manufactured to repair the bone defects. Significant bone regenerations, considerable bone ingrowth, and desirable biosafety were confirmed in vivo. Enhanced Osseointegration of Zn-Mg Composites by Tuning the Release of Zn Ions with Sacrificial Mg-Rich Anode Design.

Abstract:Relatively slow degradation rate and delayed osseointegration induced by excessive release of Zn2+ ions are two main disadvantages of the use of pure Zn ion bioabsorbable orthopedic implants. In light of this, we designed a cathodic protection strategy by incorporating Mg, acting as a sacrificial anode, into Zn to form Zn-Mg composites. The performance of novel Zn-Mg composites with regard to degradation behavior and biocompatibility was evaluated systematically under in vitro and in vivo conditions. Macro-galvanic coupling that formed between the Mg-rich phase (anode) and the Zn matrix phase (cathode) accelerated the degradation of Zn-Mg composites as compared to that of pure Zn. Composition analysis revealed ZnO as the dominant product of Zn-Mg composites, followed by calcification matrix formation during the bone healing process. Cytotoxicity assay showed prominently improved cell viability after addition of Mg. Histological analysis manifested delayed osseointegration for the pure Zn group. In contrast, direct contact between new bone and Zn-5Mg composite in multiple locations and increased bone bonding areas were found over time. The synergic biological effect of co-releasing Zn2+ and Mg2+ ions by preferential corrosion of sacrificial Mg-rich phase contributed to the ameliorated bone integration. Thus, introducing sacrificial Mg-rich anode is an effective design strategy to increase the degradation rate of pure Zn while simultaneously improving its bone integration ability.

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg) alloys have been widely used in bone fixation, bone repair, and cardiovascular stents as biodegradable bone‐implant materials. However, their clinical application is limited due to their fast corrosion rate and poor mechanical stability. Here we report the development of Mg‐2Zn‐0.5Ca‐0.5Sr (MZCS) and Mg‐2Zn‐0.5Ca‐0.5Zr (MZCZ) alloys with improved mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, cytocompatibility, osteogenesis performance, and antibacterial capability for biodegradable bone‐implant applications. The hot‐extruded (HE) MZCZ sample exhibited the highest ultimate tensile strength of 255.8±2.4 MPa and the highest yield strength of 208.4±2.8 MPa among all alloy samples and an elongation of 15.7±0.5% due to the recrystallization and grain‐refining effect of Zr. The HE MZCS sample showed the highest corrosion resistance among all samples, with the lowest corrosion current density of 0.2±0.1 μA/cm2 and lowest corrosion rate of 4±2 μm/y obtained from electrochemical testing, and a degradation rate of 368 μm/y and hydrogen (H2) evolution rate of 0.83±0.03 mL/cm2/d obtained from immersion testing for 21 d in Hanks' solution. The MZCZ sample showed the highest cell viability in relation to MC3T3‐E1 cells among all alloy extracts, indicating good cytocompatibility except at 25% concentration. Abstract:The enhancement of osteogenesis and angiogenesis remains a great challenge for the successful regeneration of engineered tissue. Biodegradable Mg and Zn alloys have received increasing interest as potential biodegradable metallic materials, partially due to the biological functions of Mg2+ and Zn2+ with regard to osteogenesis and angiogenesis, respectively. In the present study, novel biodegradable Zn–xMg (x = 0.2, 0.5, 1.0 wt.%) alloys were designed and fabricated, and the effects of adding different amounts of Mg to the Zn matrix were investigated. The osteogenesis and angiogenesis beneficial effects of Zn2+ and Mg2+ release during the biodegradation were characterized, demonstrating coordination with the bone regeneration process in a dose-dependent manner. The results show that increased Mg content leads to a higher amount of released Mg2+ while decreasing the Zn2+ concentration in the extract. The osteogenesis of pre-osteoblasts was promoted in Zn–0.5Mg and Zn–1Mg due to the higher concentration of Mg2+. Moreover, pure Zn extract presented the highest activity in angiogenesis, owing to the highest concentration of Zn2+ release (6.415 μg/mL); the proliferation of osteoblast cells was, however, inhibited under such a high Zn2+ concentration. Although the concentration of Zn ion was decreased in Zn–0.5Mg and Zn–1Mg compared with pure Zn, the angiogenesis was not influenced when the concentration of Mg in the extract was sufficiently increased. Hence, Mg2+ and Zn2+ in Zn–Mg alloys show a dual modulation effect. The Zn–0.5Mg alloy was indicated to be a promising implant candidate due to demonstrating the appropriate activity in regulating osteogenesis and angiogenesis. The present work evaluates the effect of the Mg content in Zn-based alloys on biological activities, and the results provide guidance regarding the Zn–Mg composition in designs for orthopedic application.
