Abstract:The structure and acidity of HZSM-5 zeolites were modified using different post treatment methods: alkaline treatment, steam treatment, and alkaline-steaming treatment. The catalytic performances of modified zeolites were tested in 1-butene catalytic cracking. Their physicochemical properties were characterized by N2 adsorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and infrared spectroscopy with pyridine adsorption (Py-IR). The acidities of zeolites increased after the alkaline treatment, and as a result, the activity of butene cracking increased and the selectivity of propylene decreased. However, the deactivation rate of alkaline-treated zeolites had no significant change. There was a pronounced development of mesopores (5—20 nm) with a broad pore-size distribution in alkaline-treated ZSM-5 zeolites. Mesopores (2—4 nm) with a narrow distribution is observed after steaming treatment, while the mesopore volume is low. Zeolites after alkaline- and steaming-treatment showed two kinds of mesopore distributions, 2—4 nm (narrow) and 5—20 nm (broad). Due to the decrease of Br?nsted acidic sites, the selectivity of propylene increased over ZSM-5 zeolites with any of the post treatments; a relatively stable propylene yield was obtained after the reaction of 2.5 h (except for zeolites treated with high concentration of alkaline followed by steaming treatment).
Effect of External Surface Barriers over Hierarchical ZSM-5 Zeolite on N-Heptane Catalytic Cracking

Abstract:To better understand external surface barriers on hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite, SiO2 layers were constructed over zeolite nanocrystal by using chemical liquid depositions (CLD). Diffusion measurement showed that the apparent diffusion rate over the zeolite was increased by up to 142 % after SiO2 deposition, indicating that the external surface barriers had been significantly reduced. The performance of hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite for n-heptane catalytic cracking indicated that the catalytic activity (TOF) was increased from 0.55 to 0.91 s(-1) after 3 nm layer of SiO2 deposition, leading to a total yield increase of ethylene and propylene by up to 23 %. The strong positive correlation of catalytic activity with apparent diffusion rate suggests that reducing external surface barriers can improve the utilization efficiency of active sites in micropores and enhance the catalytic activity of the zeolite. These results demonstrate that CLD of SiO2 can reduce external surface barriers on hierarchical zeolite, thereby improving its cracking performance.

Abstract:Abstract Hierarchical single-crystal ZSM-5 zeolites with different Si/Al ratios (Hier-ZSM-5- x , where x = 50, 100, 150 and 200) were synthesized using an ordered mesoporous carbon-silica composite as hard template. Hier-ZSM-5- x exhibits improved mass transport properties, excellent mechanical and hydrothermal stability, and higher catalytic activity than commercial bulk zeolites in the benzyl alcohol self-etherification reaction. Results show that a decrease in the Si/Al ratio in hierarchical single-crystal ZSM-5 zeolites leads to a significant increase in the acidity and the density of micropores, which increases the final catalytic conversion. The effect of porous hierarchy on the diffusion of active sites and the final catalytic activity was also studied by comparing the catalytic conversion after selectively designed poisoned acid sites. These poisoned Hier-ZSM-5- x shows much higher catalytic conversion than the poisoned commercial ZSM-5 zeolite, which indicates that the numerous intracrystalline mesopores significantly reduce the diffusion path of the reactant, leading to the faster diffusion inside the zeolite to contact with the acid sites in the micropores predominating in ZSM-5 zeolites. This study can be extended to develop a series of hierarchical single-crystal zeolites with expected catalytic performance.

Abstract:Bilayered HZSM-5 zeolite Coatings with additional nonzeolite pores were synthesized on the inner surface of stainless steel tubes by a secondary growth method with the addition of ethanol, into the synthesis batch. The as-synthesized coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and gas permeation, indicating that additional noneolitic pores Were. formed hi the presence Of ethanol. A remarkable greater than 1000-fold improvement in N-2 permeation was observed. Catalytic cracking of supercritical n-dodecane (500 degrees C, 4 MPa) over a series of bilayered HZSM-5 coatings showed that the HZSM-5 coatings with additional nonzeolite pores also exhibit a remarkable catalytic, activity improvement by ca. 150% and that the amount of nonzeolite porosity may play a determining role in the enhancement of the catalytic performance. According to. cracking products and the permeation test, the performance enhancement maybe attributed to the effective access of reactant to the acid sites in the zeolite pores due to the enhanced diffusion of supercritical n-dodecane in the zeolite coatings with the nonzeolite pores.

Abstract:Hydroisomerization has been considered as an effective and efficient route for production of transportation fuels and lubricants with superior cold-flow properties. In current work, n-hexadecane (n-C 16 ) hydroisomerization was investigated over Pt catalysts supported on hierarchical ZSM-48, which was post-treated by multi-step procedures including alkaline-acid, acid-alkaline-acid, steaming-alkaline-acid, and fluorination-alkaline-acid leaching. This work was purposed to construct the secondary mesoporous network, enhance the accessible acid sites in hierarchical ZSM-48 zeolite, and investigate their cooperative effects on hydroisomerization performance. The results demonstrated that the microporosity and the crystallinity were preserved after the controllable leaching, coupled with more exposed accessible acidity and enhanced mesoporosity. High dispersion of Pt particles and quantitative metal-acid balance were unable to be the threats for the sequential acid-catalyzed reaction. The cooperative effects of enhanced mesoporosity and highly-accessible acidity accelerated the diffusion and promoted the proximity of metal sites and acid sites, thereby persuading the treated ZSM-48 samples to exhibit excellent activity and iso -selectivity. The i-C 16 yield over Pt/ZSM-48(H) catalyst could reach around 86 wt% at conversion rates of 90 wt% with iso -selectivity of 96 wt%. However, the excessively accessible acid sites in Pt/ZSM-48(F) could induce further skeletal transformation and deteriorate the iso -selectivity, although the mesoporous structure was as well established.

Abstract:The development of an effective strategy for synthesizing two-dimensional MFI zeolites has attracted more and more attention. Herein, nanosheet-stacked hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite was obtained by a seed-assisted hydrothermal synthesis route using a small amount of [C18H37-N+(CH3)2-C6H12-N+(CH3)2-C6H12]Br2 (C18-6-6Br2) as a zeolite structure-directing agent and triethylamine (TEA) as a zeolite growth modifier. By varying the molar ratio of C18-6-6Br2/TEA from 2.5/0 to 2.5/40, the morphologies and textural properties of the resultant HZ5-2.5/x catalysts were finely modulated. By increasing x from 5 to 40, the morphology of the HZ5-2.5/x changed from unilamellar assembly with narrow a–c plane to intertwined nanosheets with wide a–c plane and multilamellar nanosheets with house-of-cards morphology. The thickness of these nanosheets was almost 8–10 nm. In addition, selectivity to light olefins reached 70.7% for the HZ5-2.5/10 catalyst, which was 6.6% higher than that for CZSM-5 (64.1%). Furthermore, the MFI zeolite nanosheets exhibited better anticoking stability within the 60 h reaction time compared to conventional ZSM-5 zeolite, which could be attributed to the short diffusion path and hierarchical porosity. This work will provide valuable insights into the rational design of novel zeolite catalysts for the efficient cracking of hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Although HZSM-5 zeolite is more and more widely used in petrochemical industry and other fields, its single narrow micropore system often leads to mass transfer issues during some types of catalytic reactions. In addition, dealumination in the presence of steam and coking due to the presence of strong acids sites are issues of aluminosilicate catalysts in general. In this work, a simple post-treatment method based on the traditional prepared HZSM-5 catalyst was proposed and an outlayer SiO2 encapsulated Gd/HZSM-5 catalyst with hollow and hierarchical porous systems (Si@Gd/Z5-T) was obtained. This catalyst can overcome those defects for the traditional HZSM-5 mentioned above, such as, the outermost SiO2 layer can protect the aluminum species in the framework of Gd/HZSM-5 and cover part of strong acid sites, and the hollow and hierarchical porous systems can minimize the mass transfer resistance, etc. The Si@Gd/Z5-T catalyst exhibited high selectivity of BTX (65.7%), especially xylene (39.7%), in the methanol to aromatics reaction (MTA) owing to the suitable acidity and optimized porous system. In addition, the Si@Gd/Z5-T catalyst possessed much better hydrothermal stability and the excellent anticoking ability in the MTA reaction as expected. Thus, this should be a general method for the modification of silica alumina molecular sieve catalysts to obtain the novel catalyst with hollow and hierarchical porous systems, adjustable acidity and high hydrothermal stability.

Abstract:The acid sites of zeolite are important local structures to control the products in the chemical conversion. However, it remains a great challenge to precisely design the structures of acid sites, since there are still lack the controllable methods to generate and identify them with a high resolution. Here, we use the lattice mismatch of the intergrown zeolite to enrich the inherent Lewis acid sites (LASs) at the interface of a mortise-tenon ZSM-5 catalyst (ZSM-5-MT) with a 90° intergrowth structure. ZSM-5-MT is formed by two perpendicular blocks that are atomically resolved by integrated differential phase contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy (iDPC-STEM). It can be revealed by various methods that novel framework-associated Al (AlFR) LASs are generated in ZSM-5-MT. Combining the iDPC-STEM results with other characterizations, we demonstrate that the partial missing of O atoms at interfaces results in the formation of inherent AlFR LASs in ZSM-5-MT. As a result, the ZSM-5-MT catalyst shows a higher selectivity of propylene and butene than the single-crystal ZSM-5 in the steady conversion of methanol. These results provide an efficient strategy to design the Lewis acidity in zeolite catalysts for tailored functions via interface engineering.

Abstract:Surface acid sites of hierarchical mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolite synthesized by steam-assisted crystallization were characterized by NH3 temperature-programmed desorption and in-situ infrared spectroscopy. Compared with the conventional ZSM-5 zeolite, the hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite had a lower concentration of surface acid sites. However, the hierarchical structure had more Lewis acid sites and, more importantly, much more external active sites as confirmed by 2,6-di-tert-butylpyridine infrared spectroscopy. Such hierarchical structure exposed more acid sites on the external surface, which subsequently lead to higher catalytic activity in reactions involving bulky molecules, such as o-xylene isomerization.

Abstract:In methanol-to-propylene reaction, the catalytic performance of ZSM-5 zeolite is strongly related to the material textural properties and surface acidity. In this work, the regulation of framework Al distribution (origin of the active Brønsted acid sites) in high-silica hierarchically structured ZSM-5 zeolite has been realized by a boron-modification procedure. When the B/Al ratio of the gel compositions (Si/Al = 200) reaches 7 or 9, the resultant B7- and B9-HSZ materials possess the expected hierarchically micro/mesoporous structures and increased framework Al distribution in the narrow straight/sinusoidal channels of MFI-type zeolite, which have been confirmed by the complementary characterizations, i.e. XRD, N2 sorption isotherms, ICP-OES, SEM, TEM, 27Al MAS NMR and the probe reaction of 1-hexene cracking. As a result, compared to the unmodified sample B0-HSZ and sample B3-HSZ with lower B-doping amount in the gels, they demonstrate the improved target propylene selectivity (49.3% and 48.9%) and elongated catalyst lifetime (88 h and 91 h) in MTP reaction under the WHSV of 2.8 h−1.

Abstract:ZSM-5/ZSM-48 composite zeolite was synthesized via an one-pot method by using mixed templates of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and 1,6-hexamethylenediamine (HDA), and its catalytic performance was tested in methanol-to-olefin reaction (MTO), butene conversion and co-reaction of methanol with butene. The results show that the amount of added CTAB plays a vital role in the synthesis of ZSM-5/ZSM-48 composite zeolite. The increase in the amount of CTAB in the synthesis gels leads to an increase in the content of zeolite with MFI structure, a higher specific surface area, more Al atoms located at channel intersections and more acid sites than ZSM-48 synthesized by the conventional method with HDA as a template. The catalytic results show that ZSM-5/ZSM-48 composite zeolite gives much higher propene selectivity in MTO reaction, butene conversion and co-reaction compared with ZSM-5, ZSM-48 and their mechanical mixtures due to that the combined effect of catalyst acidity and pore structure promotes the olefin-based cycle and inhibits the aromatization and hydride transfer reactions.

Abstract:Catalytic re-forming of lignite pyrolysis volatiles to aromatics over zeolites is a promising method for value-added utilization of coal tar. However, to achieve a significant enhancement in both the yields of light aromatics and the catalytic lifetime by adjusting the structure of ZSM-5 zeolite and to understand its catalytic mechanism comprehensively are still great challenges. Herein, a self-assembled hierarchical core–shell with controlled mesopores and acidity as well as an ultrathin nonacidic protective shell was synthesized through a mild hydrothermal method of alkaline treatment with tetrapropylammonium hydroxide or tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TPAOH or TEAOH). Both the number and pore size distribution of mesopores can be regulated by adjusting the hydrothermal treatment time. These generated mesopores not only facilitate the mass transfer of reactants and products but also improve the utilization efficiency of the acid site. In addition, the newly fabricated nonacidic shell, which coats on the surface of ZSM-5 as a chain mail, plays a critical role in suppressing the coke formation by passivation of the acid sites on the external surface. In this work, the pore properties and acid distribution of ZSM-5 zeolite can be regulated synchronously through a desilication–recrystallization process. In addition, enhanced yields of light aromatics and catalytic lifetime were obtained simultaneously. Effect of the desilication of H-ZSM-5 by alkali treatment on the catalytic performance in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis

Abstract:Hierarchical HZSM-5 zeolites were prepared by post-synthesis treatment of HZSM-5 zeolite with different concentrations of NaOH. The physicochemical properties of these zeolites loaded by cobalt nanoparticles in Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis were investigated. It was found that the activity and CH4 selectivity increased at first, then decreased closely related to the change of catalyst reducibility indicating that higher cobalt reducibility was a prerequisite for hierarchical zeolites to improve FT catalytic performances. The catalyst treated with 0.1 M NaOH was found to be optimal for C12–18 selectivity, which was mainly attributed to bimodal porous structure to improve diffusion behavior of products combining with moderate acid sites to mitigate second reactions. While the catalyst treated with 0.15 M NaOH showed the lowest activity and higher CH4 selectivity due to its lower reducibility even the largest mesopores were observed.

Abstract:C ore-shell structured ZSM-5@Silicalite-1 zeolite could effectively hinder the deactivation of catalyst surface. Currently, organic structure directing agents(OSDAs) are necessary in the conventional route for the synthesis of this core-shell zeolite under hydrothermal conditions, which is costly and environmental-unfriendly. In this research, a synthesis of the core-shell structured ZSM-5@Silicalite-1 zeolite with a strategy of alcohol filling and zeolite seeding without any organic template or solvent is exhibited. The obtained products are well characterized by X-ray powder diffractometer(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), N 2 sorption isotherms, solid magic angle spinning(MAS) NMR, temperature-programmed-desorption of ammonia(NH 3 -TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) techniques, in order to confirm the core-shell structure. More importantly, the core-shell structured ZSM-5@Silicalite-1 zeolite exhibits a long lifetime and a high p -xylene selectivity in the alkylation of toluene with methanol, compared with the conventional ZSM-5 catalyst.

Abstract:A series of HZSM-5 zeolites are fabricated to make it cross-link with an external ultrathin siliceous layer by chemical liquid deposition and the corresponding thickness is measured by TEM and XPS analysis. In situ FTIR experiments disclose that the external surface acidic sites of HZSM-5 zeolite can be covered even by siliceous monolayer (0.7 ∼ 1.3 nm, HZ5-S1). In comparison to parent HZSM-5, the catalytic cracking performance of n-butane over the modified zeolites are evidently enhanced. In particular, the n-butane conversion rate per Brønsted acid site over the HZ5-S2 (16.02 min−1) at 550 °C is 2.82 times than that over the HZSM-5 (5.68 min−1). Meanwhile, the diffusion properties of n-butane over the zeolites are quantified by in situ FTIR spectroscopic analysis. Negative correlation between steady-state diffusivity and n-butane conversion rate per Brønsted acid site can be found, which unravels the origin of the progressive decrease in the catalytic stability. Under comparable conditions, more advantages can be greatly achieved by HZ5-S1 catalyst in the catalytic activity and the yields to light olefins due to the benign diffusivity and the elimination of external surface acidic sites. This study can provide a guidance for the understanding of diffusion intensification and the rational design of superior catalyst for the catalytic cracking reactions of alkanes.

Abstract:ZSM-5 zeolites with hierarchical porosity have been an increasing attention due to their improvement in diffusion limitation issue. This work here reports that hierarchical porous ZSM-5 zeolites were synthesized using fumed silica and as-synthesized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) as dual-silica source for the first time with the aid of silicate-1 seed. The effects of the amounts of silicate-1 seed and as-synthesized MSNs on crystallinity, morphology, mesoporous structure and acidity of the prepared ZSM-5 zeolites were systematically investigated by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, N 2 adsorption-desorption and NH 3 -TPD techniques. The results showed that mesopores can be incorporated by introducing an appropriate amount of as-synthesized MSNs which also promote the crystallization of aluminosilicate at the same time. Moreover, the mesoporous structures of ZSM-5 zeolites can be flexibly regulated within a certain range via varying the dosage of as-synthesized MSNs. The obtained optimal sample Z-0.02ã0.2 with high crystallinity and bi-modal mesopores centered at 2.1ô nm and 3.4ô nm exhibits significantly improved catalytic performance in LDPE cracking on a TG apparatus, compared with the conventional mono-modal microporous ZSM-5 zeolite. This approach constitutes a simple and low-cost pathway to synthesize ZSM-5 zeolites with controllable hierarchical porous architecture and might facilitate their industrial application.

Abstract:The morphology and mesoporosity of zeolite are two vital properties to determine its performance in diverse applications involving adsorption and catalysis; while it remains a big challenge for the synthesis and regulation of zeolites with exceptional morphology/porosity only through inorganic-ions-based modification. Herein, by simply optimizing the alkali metal type (K+ or Na+), as well as alkali/water ratio and crystallization temperature, the zeolite ZSM-5 mesocrystals with diverse mesostructures are simply and controllably prepared via fine-tuning the crystallization mechanism in an organotemplate-free, ions-mediated seed-assisted system. Moreover, the impacts of these key parameters on the evolution of seed crystals, the development and assembly behavior of aluminosilicate species and the solution-phase process during zeolite crystallization are investigated by means of directional etching in NH4F or NaOH solutions. Except for the morphology/mesoporosity modulation, their physical and chemical properties, such as particle size, microporosity, Si/Al ratio and acidity, can be well maintained at a similar level. As such, the p/o-xylene adsorption and catalytic performance of o-xylene isomerization are used to exhaustively evaluate the synergistically enhanced catalytic activity and shape selectivity of the obtained products. This work demonstrates the possibility of effectively constructing novel zeolite mesostructures by simply altering parameters on simple ions-controlled crystallization and provides good models to inspect the impacts of mesoporosity or morphology on their catalytic performances.

Abstract:HZSM-5 zeolites were directly synthesized via a two-stage crystallization method using ammonia hydroxide as an alkaline source instead of the conventional sodium hydroxide, and their performance in the methanol-to-propylene (MTP) reaction was investigated at 470 °C. The use of ammonia hydroxide as the alkaline source can overcome the inherent drawback of requiring multiple ion exchanges for converting Na-form zeolites to NH4+-form derivatives. Bulk and surface characterization techniques were combined to study the changes in crystallinity, porosity, morphology, aluminum distribution, and acidity with the experimental conditions. It was found that ammonia hydroxide had limited effect on the crystallinity and morphology of HZSM-5 zeolites, whereas the silicon and aluminum sources affected significantly the morphology and aluminum distribution. The acid properties and aluminum distribution induced important changes in the MTP activity and selectivity. Thus, increasing the framework SiO2/Al2O3 ratios in HZSM-5, in other words, reducing the acid density and the amount of framework aluminum species in the channel intersections, could improve the selectivity to propylene by favoring the olefinic-based cycle reaction. The catalyst lifetime was found to depend on not only the acid density but also on the acid distribution (or framework aluminum distribution).

Abstract:For zeolite catalysts, the regulation of active site and pore structure plays an important role in the enhancement of their catalytic performance. In this work, a one-pot and organic template-free co-regulation route is proposed to straightforwardly synthesize basic mesoporous ZSM-5 zeolites with adjustable alkaline-earth metal species. The synthesis pathway combines two decisive strategies: 1) the seed-induced interface assembly growth method and 2) the acidic co-hydrolysis/condensation of aluminosilicate species and alkaline-earth metal (e.g., Mg, Ca, Sr, or Ba) sources. It is interesting that the mesoporous structure was self-evolved through particle-attached seed-interfacial crystallization without the assistance of any template. Meanwhile, the incorporation of alkaline-earth metals species is homogeneous and highly dispersed in the solid products during the whole crystallization process, and finally generate the superior basicity. Catalysis tests of the as-synthesized samples displayed their novel performance in the typical base reaction of Knoevenagel condensation, even for bulky substrates owing to the enhanced diffusion arising from the meso/microporous network. This finding opens new possibilities for facile, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly synthesis of mesoporous high-silica zeolites with tunable acid/base properties, and deepens our understanding of the particle-attached crystallization.
