Abstract:The interesterification process allows structured lipids (SLs) to be obtained with a modified triacylglycerol (TAG) structure, in which the unfavorable saturated fatty acids (SFAs) are replaced with nutritionally significant fatty acids (FAs) such as monounsaturated (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated (PUFAs). Oxidative stability is crucial for the quality of SLs. This study aimed to characterize and evaluate the FA profile and oxidative stability of SLs synthesized by the enzymatic interesterification of hemp seed oil (HO) and coconut oil (CO) blends. Blends were prepared in three ratios (75% HO:25% CO, 50% HO:50% CO, and 25% HO:75% CO) and interesterified using sn-1,3 regiospecific lipase for 2 or 6 h. FA composition, the FA distribution of TAGs, acid value (AV), peroxide value (PV), and oxidation time were analyzed and compared to non-interesterified blends. Results showed no significant difference in the SFA:MUFA ratios between interesterified and non-interesterified blends with the same proportions. Lauric acid predominantly occupied the sn-2 position in all blends. Interesterified blends had higher AVs, exceeding codex standards, while PVs remained within the acceptable limits. Blends with 75% HO had lower oxidation times compared to those with 75% CO, with no significant difference between interesterified and non-interesterified blends. In the interesterification process of the studied blends, new TAGs with a modified structure were created, which may affect their physical and nutritional properties. This process also had a significant effect on the AV and PV levels, but not on the oxidation time of the modified blends. Therefore, it is necessary to remove free FAs after the enzymatic process to produce SLs characterized by improved hydrolytic stability. This will lead to better technological properties compared to the original oils. Further research is also necessary to enhance the oxidation stability of SLs obtained from blends of CO and HO to improve their storage stability.
Enzymatic transesterification of coconut oil by using immobilized lipase on biochar: An experimental and molecular docking study

Abstract:Guava seed biochar appears as a new alternative of effective support to the immobilization of Burkholderia cepacia lipase (BCL) by physical adsorption. The objective of this work was to evaluate the potential of this immobilized biocatalyst in the transesterification reaction of crude coconut oil and ethanol and to understand the mechanism of the reaction and through the study of molecular docking. The best loading of BCL was determined to be 0.15 genzyme /gsupport having a hydrolytic activity of 260 U.g−1 and 54% immobilization yield. The products of transesterification reaction produced a maximum yield at 40 °C and under different reaction conditions. The monoacylglycerols (MAG) conversion of 59 % was using substrate molar ratio oil:ethanol 1:7 with a 24h. In addition, the highest ethyl esters yield (48 %) the molar ratio was 1:7 with 96h and maximum conversion of diacylglycerols (DAG) 30% molar ratio was 1:6 with a 24h. In the molecular fitting it was used to clarify the mechanisms at the molecular level in the transesterification reaction. MAG and DAG are compounds with excellent emulsifying properties used in industrial production of several bioproducts such as cosmetic, pharmaceuticals, foods, and lubricants.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering, Ahead of Print. In the transportation and power production industries, the use of renewable and environmentally friendly fuels has grown in importance. Biodiesel derived from coconut oil contains over 90% saturated fatty acids. Biodiesel was made using alkaline transesterification since coconut oil has a free fatty acid content of less than 2.5%. Enzymatic or chemical transesterification are both possible. For the synthesis of coconut biodiesel, the optimal processing conditions are 60 °C for 1 h, a 6:1 ratio, 1% potassium hydroxide and a 95% yield. According to the experiment, 55 °C was the ideal reaction temperature for using coconut oil to produce biodiesel. Sixty minutes was the ideal amount of time to extract biodiesel from coconut oil. The methanol-to-oil molar ratio raised yield from 6:1 to 8:1, a 95% increase. Significant amounts of an alkaline catalyst, which allows soap to develop under the influence of fatty acids, are responsible for the high yield response; it is concluded that 1 wt% would be an appropriate catalyst concentration for the present investigation. The central composite rotatable design (CCRD) of the response surface methodology method is used to optimize several process parameters, including temperature, reaction duration, methanol-to-oil ratio and catalyst concentration. The CCRD optimization approach produced better results. The following are the final, optimized results: coconut oil methyl ester ratio: 96.69%, temperature: 55 °C; duration: 59.2 min; catalyst concentration: 0.7; molar ratio: 6.4.

Abstract:Medium and long-chain triacylglycerol (MLCT) rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were obtained in three-hour interesterification of fish oil with medium-chain triacylglycerol (MCTs), using lipase bio-imprinted with surfactant as a catalyst. Initially, for bio-imprinted lipase preparation, the interesterification reaction conditions were optimized, resulting in a lipase with 1.47 times higher catalytic activity compared to control (non-bio-imprinted). Afterwards, the reaction conditions for MLCT synthesis were optimized, using bio-imprinted lipase as a catalyst. The reaction reached equilibrium within first three hours at 70 °C temperature, 4 wt% lipase load, and molar ratio of substrate 1:1.5. Under these conditions, final product contained 18.52% MCT, 56.65% MLCT, and 24.83% long-chain triacylglycerol (LCT). To reduce the MCT content, a solvent extraction process was performed, yielding 2.42% MCT, 56.19% MLCT, and 41.39% LCT. The obtained structured lipids (SLs), enriched in n-3 PUFAs, offer significant health benefits, enhanced bioavailability, with potential applications in functional foods and nutraceuticals.

Abstract:A27-YEAR-OLD WOMAN PRESENTED WITH BLISTERING LEsions on her hands, feet, and perioral area. The lesions had manifested more than 1 week before her visit. She said that her hair had become brittle and lighter in color and was shedding. She said that she had not used any medications before onset of the skin lesions. When the plantar bullae progressed to the point of interfering with her walking, she sought medical attention. The patient had a long history of restrictive eating patterns and nightly selfinduced vomiting. She also reported a recent history of diarrhea and intermittent amenorrhea. On physical examination, the patient was a thin woman with a body mass index of 17.5 (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters; reference range for healthy adults, 18.5 to 24.9). Tense 4to 5-cm bullae were present on her hands, with erosions on her fingers, palms, soles (FIGURE 1A-C), perioral area, and oral mucous membranes. Multiple dusky vesicles with maceration were present in the vulvar area. Perifollicular hemorrhage was evident in the axillary and pretibial regions. The patient’s hair was thin, proximally hypopigmented, and was easily removed on gentle hair pull (Figure 1D). The patient was admitted to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Abstract:Coconut oil mill waste (CMW) contained high free fatty acid (FFA) content which potentially could be converted into a value-added product such as fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). In this study, a montmorillonite-sulfonated carbon catalyst was used to evaluate the kinetic parameter of FFA conversion from CMW into FAME. The characterization of FTIR and SEM-EDX confirmed that the -SO3H groups were successfully incorporated into montmorillonite- carbon catalyst. The highest catalyst acidity (9.4 mmol/g) was achieved by a ratio of montmorillonite to sulfonated carbon of 1:3 % w/w. The kinetic study using montmorillonite-sulfonated carbon 1:3 % w/w showed that the reaction temperature and molar ratio of methanol to FFA (% v/v) were positively correlated to the reaction rate. The highest rate constant of esterification towards the product (k1), reactant (k2), and equilibrium were 0.1187, 0.0595, and 1.995, achieved by a temperature of 80 ̊C, respectively. The Arrhenius constant and activation energy towards the product were 3.3085×106 and 50.3 J/mole, respectively. The reaction temperature was positively correlated to the equilibrium constant, which indicated that the reaction was endothermic. The kinetic model validation revealed that the predicted value from the model was adequately in accordance with the experimental value, as indicated by a high coefficient of determination.
EFFECT OF MODIFICATION OF PROCINE PANCREAS LIPASE BY NONIONIC SURFACTANT ON THE PROCESS OF ENZYMATIC INTERESTERIFICATION

Abstract:The procine pancreas lipase(PPLipase) was modified by nonionic surfactants(Tween40,Tween65,Span60,Span80,S1170 and S1670) in ethanol solution;and the modified PPLipases were used to catalyze the interesterification of camellia oil and linoleic acid. The interesterification rate,acyl migration and the composition content of the product were determined during the enzymatic interesterification to study the effect of the modification on the enzymatic interesterification process. The results showed that the interesterification activity of the modified PPLipases was higher than that of the PPLipase. Before the reaction equilibrium,the acyl migration rates of the interesterifcattion catalyzed by the modified PPLipases were lower than that of the interesterification catalyzed by PPLipase. After the reaction equilibrium,the interesterification catalyzed by PPLipase had the minimum acyl migration(about 28%);the interesterification catalyzed by S1670-PPLipase had the highest acyl migration(about 41%); and the acyl migrations of the interesterification catalyzed by S1170-PPLipase,Tween40-PPLipase,Tween65-PPLipase,Span80-PPLipase and Span60-PPLipase were between 28% and 41%.During the interesterification process,the interesterification rate increased,and triglyceride content decreased continuously; diglyceride content increased rapidly in the early stage and kept unchanged essentially;no monoglyceride was detected in the initial stage,but the monoglyceride contntent increased rapidly when the reaction tended to equilibrium.

Abstract:Modification of maize and cassava starches was done using recovered coconut oil and microbial lipase. Microwave esterification was advantageous as it gave a DS 1.55 and 1.1 for maize starch and cassava starch, respectively. Solution state esterification of cassava starch for 36 h at 60 degrees C gave a DS of 0.08 and semi-solid state esterification gave a DS of 0.43. TGA and DSC studies showed that the higher DS attributed to the thermostability, since onset of decomposition is at a higher temperature (492 degrees C) than the unmodified (330 degrees C) and was stable above 600 degrees C. alpha-Amylase digestibility and viscosity reduced for modified starch.

Abstract:This paper reports the preparation of margarine fat using Lipozyme TL IM as a catalyst and peony seed oil (PSO), palm stearin (PS) and coconut oil (CO) as raw materials. The results indicate that there were no significant changes in fatty acid composition before or after interesterification of the oil samples. However, the total amount of medium- and long-chain triglycerides (MLCTs) increased from 2.92% to 11.38% in sample E1 after interesterification, mainly including LaLaO, LaMO, LaPM, LaOO, LaPO and LaPP. Moreover, the slip melting point (SMP) of sample E1 decreased from 45.9 °C (B1) to 33.5 °C. The solid fat content (SFC) of all the samples at 20 °C was greater than 10%, indicating that they could effectively prevent oil exudation. After interesterification, the samples exhibited a β′ crystal form and could be used to prepare functional margarine.

Abstract:Trimethylolpropane fatty acid triester (TFATE) is a promising biolubricant as an environmentally friendly substitute to conventional mineral-based lubricants. However, the issues of extensive energy consumption from vacuum maintenance and feedstock saponification caused by strong alkaline catalysts exist in current TFATEbased biolubricant synthesis. Here, sustainable production of biolubricant was achieved with methyl oleate (MO) from non-edible oil sources as the feedstock and moderate alkaline K2CO3 as the catalyst. Nitrogen gas stripping method instead of vacuum was adopted for methanol removal. The effects of agitation speed, N-2 flow rate, catalyst amount, MO to trimethylolpropane (TMP) molar ratio and temperature on MO conversion and TFATE selectivity were examined. The TFATE selectivity reached 95.6% under the optimized conditions. Leaching tests indicated neglectable K2CO3 dissolution in reaction products. The kinetic parameters for the three consecutive transesterification reactions were calculated. In addition, the synthesized biolubricants exhibit low acid value and volatility, moderate iodine value, superior thermal stability, and good rheological and frictional properties.

Abstract:Acid functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (F-MWCNTs) using a mixture of HNO3 and H2SO4 (1:3, v:v) was used as support materials for the adsorption of Candida rugosa lipase (CRL) as nanoconjugates (CRL-MWCNTs) for producing methyl oleate. To evaluate the competency of the CRL-MWCNTs nanoconjugates, parameters viz. reaction time, surfactant as well as thermostability and reusability were investigated. The characterization of CRL-MWCNTs nanoconjugates using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Field Scanning Electron Microscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy revealed successful attachment of CRL onto the F-MWCNTs. Utilization of CRL-MWCNTs nanoconjugates resulted in a higher acid conversion in the synthesis of methyl oleate (79.85% at 11h of reaction time) when compared with the free CRL i.e. an approximately 1.5-fold improvement over the free CRL. The highest percentage of esterification (83.62%) was observed following the use of nonionic surfactant when compared with the anionic and cationic ones. The CRL-MWCNTs nanoconjugates could be used up to 5 cycles, retaining 50% of its residual activity. Since the preparation of the CRL-MWCNTs nanoconjugates was facile and cheap while producing reasonable yield, the CRL-MWCNTs nanoconjugates developed here were found as promising biocatalysts for the production of methyl oleate.

Abstract:Abstract Acid oil, a by‐product of vegetable oil refining, was enzymatically converted to fatty acid methyl esters (FAME). Acid oil contained free fatty acids (FFA), acylglycerols, and lipophilic compounds. First, acylglycerols (11 wt%) were hydrolyzed at 30 °C by 20 units Candida rugosa lipase/g‐mixture with 40 wt% water. The resulting oil layer containing 92 wt% FFA was used for the next reaction, methyl esterification of FFA to FAME by immobilized Candida antarctica lipase. A mixture of 66 wt% oil layer and 34 wt% methanol (5 mol for FFA) were shaken at 30 °C with 1.0 wt% lipase. The degree of esterification reached 96% after 24 h. The resulting reaction mixture was then dehydrated and subjected to the second esterification that was conducted with 2.2 wt% methanol (5 mol for residual FFA) and 1.0 wt% immobilized lipase. The degree of esterification of residual FFA reached 44%. The degree increased successfully to 72% (total degree of esterification 99%) by conducting the reaction in the presence of 10 wt% glycerol, because water in the oil layer was attracted to the glycerol layer. Over 98% of total esterification was maintained, even though the first and the second esterification reactions were repeated every 24 h for 40 days. The enzymatic process comprising hydrolysis and methyl esterification produced an oil containing 91 wt% FAME, 1 wt% FFA, 1 wt% acylglycerols, and 7 wt% lipophilic compounds.

Abstract:Coconut (Cocos nucifera) is one of the most abundant tropical plants in Indonesia. It is proven that in 2020 the total area of coconut plantations in Indonesia reached 3,377,376 hectares. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) is one of the diversified coconut products with high commercial value. In this study, the production of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) was carried out by fermenting tempeh yeast and with the help of the bromelain enzyme as a catalyst. This is because the bromelain enzyme is a type of protease enzyme that acts as a protein breaker in the oil contained in the coconut milk emulsion. Research has shown that the concentration of the bromelain enzyme affects the yield of VCO. Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) with the addition of 6 grams of bromelain enzyme, 30 hours of fermentation time, and the use of 2 grams of tempeh yeast resulted in the highest yield value of 9.2% and free fatty acids (FFA) of 0.21%. This is because the higher the bromelain enzyme concentration, the more it will bind to protein as a substrate. In addition, the longer the fermentation, the more hydrolysis that occurs in the oil, so that the fermentation time also affects the concentration of free fatty acids of VCO. Analysis of fatty acid content was carried out using the GCMS method and showed that the highest fatty acid content was lauric acid at 54.27%. While the physical characterization of the resulting VCO is in accordance with SNI 7381:2018, which has a distinctive smell of coconut aroma, a distinctive taste of coconut oil, and is colorless.
Time-course kinetic model for the enzyme-limited hydrolysis of methyl esters elucidates the reaction mechanism and inhibition challenges for the production of fatty acids

Abstract:Fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) and fatty acid (FA) are important oleochemicals. In our previous work, we have shown that FAME can be hydrolyzed to FA using free Candida antarctica lipase B (CALB) in a simple one-pot batch process. However, under enzyme-limited conditions, low conversions inadequate for industrial applications were obtained. Moreover, the reaction mechanism still eludes complete understanding to facilitate further optimization efforts. For the first time, we propose a time-course kinetic model for the enzyme-limited hydrolysis of FAME catalyzed by free CALB to shed light on the reaction mechanism and its associated inhibition challenges. The model was developed based on the ping-pong bi-bi mechanism integrated with several inhibitory mechanisms involving the reaction substrates and by-product. Noteworthily, the model demonstrates a satisfactory fit to the experimental data at water-to-FAME molar ratios between 1:1 and 120:1, as characterized by the high R 2 and low root-mean-square deviation values averaging at 0.97 and 0.025, respectively. Additionally, the results suggest that the model output conforms with the reaction's stoichiometry and does not show any dependence on the carbon chain length of FAME. Beyond the goodness-of-fit, the model reveals that the enzyme experiences insignificant levels of inhibition by the FAME substrate. Furthermore, the model affirms the enzyme's vulnerability to inhibition induced by the methanol by-product, which reduces with increasing water-to-FAME molar ratio. The model also unravels that a heavy excess of water could inhibit the enzyme. Ultimately, this work reveals that the reaction can be performed under enzyme-limited conditions, and the insights acquired from this model could potentially inspire forthcoming endeavors to improve the process.

Abstract:BackgroundMicrobial synthesis of oleochemicals derived from native fatty acid (FA) metabolism has presented significant advances in recent years. Even so, native FA biosynthetic pathways often provide a narrow variety of usually linear hydrocarbons, thus yielding end products with limited structural diversity. To overcome this limitation, we took advantage of a polyketide synthase-based system from Mycobacterium tuberculosis and developed an Escherichia coli platform with the capacity to synthesize multimethyl-branched long-chain esters (MBE) with novel chemical structures.ResultsWith the aim to initiate the characterization of these novel waxy compounds, here, we describe the chassis optimization of the MBE producer E. coli strain for an up-scaled oil production. By carrying out systematic metabolic engineering, we improved the final titer to 138.1 ± 5.3 mg MBE L−1 in batch cultures. Fed-batch microbial fermentation process was also optimized achieving a maximum yield of 790.2 ± 6.9 mg MBE L−1 with a volumetric productivity of 15.8 ± 1.1 mg MBE (L h)−1. Purified MBE oil was subjected to various physicochemical analyses, including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and pressurized-differential scanning calorimetry (P-DSC) studies.ConclusionsThe analysis of the pour point, DSC, and P-DSC data obtained showed that bacterial MBE possess improved cold flow properties than several plant oils and some chemically modified derivatives, while exhibiting high oxidation stability at elevated temperatures. These encouraging data indicate that the presence of multiple methyl branches in these novel esters, indeed, conferred favorable properties which are superior to those of linear esters.

Ester Synthesis in Aqueous Media by Lipase: Alcoholysis, Esterification and Substrate Hydrophobicity

Abstract:Lipases are versatile biocatalysts commonly used for flavor ester synthesis in media with low‐water activity. This research studied the mechanism of ester synthesis by lipase Palatase in coconut cream and phosphate buffer with alcohols and fatty acids. When ethanol was added as the alcohol substrate, hydrolysis of triglycerides dominated over synthesis of esters. When fusel alcohols (fusel oil) were used as the alcohol substrate, ester synthesis dominated over lipid hydrolysis. However, there was no visible pattern of fatty acid production and then reutilization in relation to ester synthesis in either case. Higher consumption of octanoic acid was obtained than that of butyric acid in both coconut cream and buffer systems spiked with the same alcohol. This indicated the preferential utilization of more hydrophobic substrates for esterification by lipase in aqueous media. These results suggest that the lipase Palatase‐catalyzed ester synthesis in aqueous media was mainly hydrophobicity‐dependent esterification. Esters are important flavor compounds that are applied in food products. The effects of substrate hydrophobicity and reaction environment on the catalytic behavior of a lipase during ester synthesis in an aqueous system of coconut cream and fusel oil were investigated. Useful information was obtained on the in situ generation of esters in food materials. This study has implications for lipase‐catalyzed synthesis of flavor esters in other aqueous food matrices.

Abstract:Enzymatic syntheses of oligosaccharide fatty acid esters are important owing to their wide range of industrial applications in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. Transesterification of isomaltotriose and palmitic acid vinyl ester, catalyzed by the metalloprotease thermolysin, was performed in organic solvents. The process parameters (reaction time and temperature) were optimized to achieve the highest yield of isomaltotriose palmitate (IP). The water content of the reaction system played a key role in the acylation of isomaltotriose. Dimethyl sulfoxide was thought to be the most suitable reaction medium by taking the degree of substitution of the modified isomaltotriose into account. The optimum reaction time, temperature, water content, and enzyme concentration were 24h, 45°C, 40%, and 0.05%, respectively, under which the product yield was as high as 89.7%. The enzyme operational stability study showed that thermolysin retained 51.5% of its initial activity for the synthesis of IP (even after repeated use for 72h). Moreover, test results showed that the emulsifying capacity and emulsion stability of IP are 107.5mL oil/g ester and 16.3%, respectively.

Abstract:Medium- and long-chain triglyceride (MLCT) is a striking structural lipid for the supply of energy and essential fatty free acids (FFAs) in the food field. This study aimed to prepare MLCT by enzymatic interesterification of rubber seed oil (RSO) and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT). Fortunately, the conversion of synthesized MLCT could reach 75.4% by the catalysis of Novozym 40086 (7 wt% to MCT) at a temperature of 40 °C with the substrate mole ratio of 1 : 0.7 (RSO : MCT). The as-synthesized MLCT contained unsaturated fatty acid (USFA, 50.13%) at the sn-2 position and exhibited superior performance on the acid value, peroxide value and iodine value in contrast to grade III soybean oil. Moreover, it exhibited the simultaneous release of LCFAs and MCFAs, extremely facilitating the reduction of body weight gain and control of the level of lipids in the blood. Finally, the preferred hepatic metabolism process of the obtained MLCT was proven to be the main cause of the reduced body weight and improved lipid levels by the in vivo deposition experiments. Therefore, our study suggested that the outstanding performance of the MLCT synthesized by RSO in foods as functional lipids.

Abstract:This study deals with the enzymatic modification of vegetable oils with the help of a new reactor design. Basically, the new reactor is a porous membrane contactor along and through which substrates are flowing. It is constituted from an enzymatic membrane and uses supercritical carbon dioxide (SC CO2) to fluidify the highly viscous substrates. The interesterification between castor oil triglycerides and methyl oleate catalysed by a lipase was chosen as a model reaction. It was preliminary tested and characterized in a batch reactor. Then the feasibility of the new process was demonstrated on a cross-flow filtration unit operating under SC CO2 conditions. The stability of the immobilized enzymes was checked and the influence of the transmembrane pressure on the reaction rate was observed.

Biodiesel Production from Citrillus colocynthis Oil Using Enzymatic Based Catalytic Reaction and Characterization Studies

Abstract:Background: Biodiesel is a green fuel consisting of long chain fatty acid monoalkyl esters, which can be blended with diesel or used alone which is usually produced from vegetable oils/fats by either lipasecatalyzed transesterification. In this investigation, an enzyme (Novozym 435) catalyzed process was optimized to prepare methyl esters from crude Citrullus colocynthis oil (CCO) by transesterification of CCO with methanol. However, as per our knowledge, lipase-catalyzed transesterification have not been used for biodiesel production from Citrullus colocynthis. Objective: The purpose of this work was to transesterify the CCO in the presence of Candida antarctica lipase as catalyst and methanol. Additionally, the physicochemical parameters/fuel properties of the Citrullus colocynthis methyl ester (CCME) were assessed and compared. Methods: Lipase-catalyzed reactions were carried out in three necked flask (50 mL) attached with reflux condenser and thermometer, immersed in oil bath at constant stirring speed (400 rpm). The reaction mixture was consisted of CCO and varying the calculated amount of methanol, tert-butyl alcohol, and Novozym 435. The experimental parameters reaction time, methanol/oil molar ratio, reaction temperature, tert-butanol content, Novozym 435 content and water content were optimized for the transesterification reaction. The CCME yield was measured using gas chromatograph. The fuel properties of the produced CCME were determined as per American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and European (EN) biodiesel standard methods. Results: In this study, an enzymatic catalyst was employed to synthesize the CCME from CCO via transesterification. Several variables affecting the CCME yield were optimized as lipase quantity (4%), water content (0.5%), methanol/oil molar ratio (5:1), reaction temperature (43 °C), reaction medium composition (80% tertbutanol/ oil), and reaction time (3.7 h). A CCME yield of 97.8% was achieved using enzyme catalyzed transesterification of CCO under optimal conditions. The significant biodiesel fuel properties of CCME, i.e. cloud point (0.70 °C); cetane number (49.07); kinematic viscosity (2.27 mm2/s); flash point (143 °C); sulfur content (2 ppm) density (880 kg/m3) and acid value (0.076 mg KOH/g) were appraised. CCME also exhibited long-term storage stability (4.80 h) and all the biodiesel fuel properties were within the range of standards (ASTM D6751 and EN 14214). Conclusion: The lipase-catalyzed transesterification produced better conversion than the base-catalyzed reaction. The fuel properties of CCME were within the limits of the ASTM D6751 and EN14214 standards. Furthermore, CCME showed good oxidative stability and a long shelf life due its high natural antioxidant content. CCME showed better fuel properties and long-term storage stability due to which it can be used as a potential alternative fuel.
