Abstract:We designed an inexpensive user computer interface for helping the disabled persons to communicate with their caretakers, which is based on EOG (electro-oculography) signals rather than the very expensive reflectance based methods. EOG signals of different eye movement patterns are analyzed with the LOS guiding setting constructed ourselves. An effective eye movement pattern is found to control the computer. Testing conducted on 12 subjects show that this system is remarkably accurate, easy to operate and reliable.

Abstract:Human-Computer Interface (HCI) has become an important area of research and development for the disabled. A portable wireless eye movement-controlled Human-Computer Interface which can be used for the disabled who have motor paralysis and who cannot speak in multiple applications (such as communication aid and smart home applications) is described here. This Interface consists of four major parts: (1) surface electrodes, (2) a two-channel amplifier, (3) a laptop (or a micro-processor), and (4) a ZigBee wireless module. Horizontal and vertical Electro-Oculography (EOG) signals are measured using five surface electrodes placed on the head .The vertical electrodes are placed about 1.0 cm above the right eyebrow and 2.0 cm below the lower lid of the right eye, the horizontal electrodes are placed 2.0 cm lateral to the each side of outer canthi and the last electrode is placed on user's forehead to serve as a ground. The two-channel amplifier is comprised of instrumentation amplifiers, band-pass filters and shift circuits. The EOG signals are sampled at the rate of 250Hz and then sent to a laptop or a micro-processor for signal processing which is based on the method of mathematical morphology to recognize the direction of eye movements and voluntary eye blink. The ZigBee wireless communication technology, which is proved to be reliable, low-power and cost-efficient, is used in the portable interface. The subjects can control the wireless device or move a cursor over a screen by using this interface. The delay of this interface is less than 0.5s and errors are very limited. This interface provides a flexible method for the disabled to improve the life quality.

Abstract:The technique for rehabilitation training of the children with cerebral palsy using human-computer interaction was studied, and a rehabilitation training system for cerebral palsy based on voice interaction was designed.The system is driven by 51 single chip microcomputers.The whole system adopts the voice chip of LD3320, the lower machine uses C language programming, and the PC uses LabVIEW programming.Through the way of serial transmission, the commands the next bit machine received are sent to PC, and by identifying the picture of the PC interface, children give the corresponding names to identify the text, voice chip, which can identify the final evaluation system automatically to judge the right to say yes or not.And for every time, the identification time was recorded.A case study was carried out to verify the proposed system effectiveness.
Experimental Evaluation of EMKEY: An Assistive Technology for People with Upper Limb Disabilities

Abstract:Assistive technology can help people with disabilities to use computers more effectively and can enable them to access the same information and resources as people without disabilities. To obtain more insight into the factors that can bring about the design of an Emulator of Mouse and Keyboard (EMKEY) to higher levels of user satisfaction, an experimental study was conducted in order to analyse its effectiveness and efficiency. The experimental study involved 27 participants (Mage = 20.81, SD = 1.14) who performed three experimental games under different conditions (using the mouse and using EMKEY with head movements and voice commands). According to the results, the use of EMKEY allowed for the successful performance of tasks such as matching stimuli (F (2, 78) = 2.39, p = 0.10, η2 = 0.06). However, the execution times of a task were found to be higher when using the emulator to drag an object on the screen (t (52, 1) = −18.45, p ≤ 0.001, d = 9.60). These results indicate the effectiveness of technological development for people with upper limb disabilities; however, there is room for improvement in terms of efficiency. The findings are discussed in relation to previous research and are based on future studies aimed at improving the operation of the EMKEY emulator.

A Prototype System for Controlling a Computer by Head Movements and Voice Commands

Abstract:This paper introduces a new prototype system for controlling a PC by head movements and also with voice commands. Our system is a multimodal interface concerned with controlling the computer. The selected modes of interaction are speech and gestures. We are seeing the revolutionary of computers and information technologies into daily practice. Healthy people use keyboard, mouse, trackball, or touchpad for controlling the PC. However these peripheries are usually not suitable for handicapped people. They may have problems using these standard peripheries, for example when they suffer from myopathy, or cannot move their hands after an injury. Our system has been developed to provide computer access for people with severe disabilities. This system tracks the computer user's Head movements with a video camera and translates them into the movements of the mouse pointer on the screen and the voice as button presses. Therefore we are coming with a proposal system that can be used with handicapped people to control the PC.

Abstract:The development of human-computer interaction has seen a major change in the last few years, moving in the direction of more user-friendly and effective interfaces. This tendency has prompted researchers to investigate new input techniques, especially in the field of gesture-based control systems. By utilizing both hand and eye gestures to create a gesture-based virtual mouse and keyboard, this paper introduces a novel method of human-computer interaction. The suggested system offers users a smooth and simple way to interact with computers by combining hand gesture recognition and eye-tracking technology. Users can control cursor movement and keyboard inputs without the use of physical peripherals by using the system to track their hand and eye movements and interpret them as commands. The incorporation of eye-tracking technology improves the system's accuracy and responsiveness, enabling more precise cursor control and interaction with elements displayed on the screen. Hand gesture recognition, on the other hand, gives users an ergonomic and natural way to input data, allowing them to carry out commands with straightforward motions. The architecture of the system combines real-time processing capabilities to guarantee low latency and high responsiveness with sophisticated machine-learning algorithms for gesture recognition. Additionally, users can define their gesture commands according to their needs and preferences because the system is flexible and customizable. The suggested gesture-based virtual mouse and keyboard system has undergone rigorous testing and evaluation, and the results show promising performance and usability in a range of scenarios and applications. This novel method of interacting with computers has the potential to improve user experience, accessibility, and productivity in a variety of computing contexts. Abstract:Standard computer input devices such as a mouse or a keyboard are not well suited to the needs of users with severe motor disabilities in their interaction with standard computer interfaces. The emergence of contemporary human computer interfaces has allowed for the development of innovative solutions for hands-free Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), which can improve the quality and accessibility of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for motor-impaired users. The objectives of this study were to design, develop and evaluate a solution for a hands-free HCI, based on the Emotiv EPOC+ device, which, among other capabilities, also enables controlling the computer with facial expressions and motion sensors. Ten non-disabled adults and eight adults with a severe motor disability participated in an experiment to evaluate the proposed HCI solution. Eighteen users completed six experimental tasks successfully using both their existing computer use approach as well as the proposed hands-free computer use approach. The times necessary to complete the tasks were measured and analyzed, along with users' subjective observations about the difficulty level of both computer use approaches. Users' perceptions about the new hands-free computer use approach were assessed as well. Although there were no significant differences in both user types regarding the difficulty level in completing the tasks, disabled users solved the tasks with less effort. Positive perceptions about perceived usefulness, ease of use, appropriateness of the technology, and satisfaction with the proposed solution for touchless interaction were assessed for both user types. Scores were significantly higher for disabled users in the case of measuring the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and satisfaction with the solution. This study showed that users with severe motor difficulties find new HCI less challenging compared to their existing computer use approach than the non-disabled who use standard HCI. When compared with non-disabled users, the disabled ones can be equally effective when confronted with a new HCI technology. Future work is needed to improve the proposed solution and to analyze the impact of different factors on users with motor disabilities and their adoption of an innovative technology for touchless interaction with a computer.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, video gaming has evolved at a tremendous rate although game input methods have been slower to change. Game input methods continue to rely on two-handed control of the joystick and D-pad or the keyboard and mouse for simultaneously controlling player movement and camera actions. Bi-manual input poses a significant play impediment to those with severe motor impairments. In this work, we propose and evaluate a hands-free game input control method that uses real-time facial expression recognition. Through our novel input method, our goal is to enable and empower individuals with neurological and neuromuscular diseases, who may lack hand muscle control, to be able to independently play video games. To evaluate the usability and acceptance of our system, we conducted a remote user study with eight severely motor-impaired individuals. Our results indicate high user satisfaction and greater preference for our input system with participants rating the input system as easy to learn. With this work, we aim to highlight that facial expression recognition can be a valuable input method.
Low-Cost Eye Gesture Communication System for People with Motor Disabilities

Abstract:Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor impairments are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration and substantial, relatively immobile setups. Eye-gaze transfer (e-tran) boards, a low-tech alternative, are challenging to master and offer slow communication rates. To mitigate the drawbacks of these two status quo approaches, we created Gaze Speak, an eye gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable, and easy-to-learn, with a higher communication bandwidth than an e-tran board. Gaze Speak can interpret eye gestures in real time, decode these gestures into predicted utterances, and facilitate communication, with different user interfaces for speakers and interpreters. Our evaluations demonstrate that GazeSpeak is robust, has good user satisfaction, and provides a speed improvement with respect to an e-tran board; we also identify avenues for further improvement to low-cost, low-effort gaze-based communication technologies.

Abstract:From colored pixels to hyper-realistic 3D landscapes of virtual reality, video games have evolved immensely over the last few decades. However, video game input still requires two-handed dexterous finger manipulations for simultaneous joystick and trigger or mouse and keyboard presses. In this work, we explore the design of a hands-free game control method using realtime facial expression recognition for individuals with neurological and neuromuscular diseases who are unable to use traditional game controllers. Similar to other Assistive Technologies (AT), our facial input technique is also designed and tested in collaboration with a graduate student who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Our preliminary evaluation shows the potential of facial expression recognition for augmenting the lives of quadriplegic individuals by enabling them to accomplish things like walking, running, flying or other adventures that may not be so attainable otherwise.

Abstract:Healthy people use a keyboard and mouse as standard input devices for controlling a computer. However, these input devices are usually not suitable for people with severe physical disabilities. This study aims to design and implement a suitable and reliable human–computer interactive (HCI) interface for disabled users by integrating both eye tracking technology and lip motion recognition. Eye movements control the cursor position on the computer screen. An eye gaze followed by a lip motion of the mouth opening served as a mouse click action. Seven lip motion features were extracted to discriminate mouth openings and mouth closures with the cumulative sum control chart algorithm. A novel smoothing technique called the threshold-based Savitzky–Golay smoothing filter was proposed to stabilize the cursor movement due to the inherent jittery motions of eyes and to reduce eye tracking latencies. In this study, a fixation experiment with nine dots was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of eye gaze data smoothing. A Chinese text entry experiment based on the on-screen keyboard with four keypad sizes was designed to evaluate the influence of the keypad size on the Chinese text entry rate. The results of the fixation experiment indicated that the threshold-based Savitzky–Golay smoothing filter with a threshold value of two standard deviations, a polynomial order of 3, and a window length of 61 can significantly improve the stability of eye cursor movements by 44.86% on average. The averaged Chinese text entry rate achieved 4.41 wpm with the dynamical enlargeable keypads. The current results encouraged us to utilize the proposed HCI interface for disabled users in the future.

Abstract:Eye movement can be regarded as a pivotal real-time input medium for human-computer communication, which is especially important for people with physical disability. In order to improve the reliability, mobility, and usability of eye tracking technique in user-computer dialogue, a novel eye control system with integrating both mouse and keyboard functions is proposed in this paper. The proposed system focuses on providing a simple and convenient interactive mode by only using user’s eye. The usage flow of the proposed system is designed to perfectly follow human natural habits. Additionally, a magnifier module is proposed to allow the accurate operation. In the experiment, two interactive tasks with different difficulty (searching article and browsing multimedia web) were done to compare the proposed eye control tool with an existing system. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) measures are used to evaluate the perceived effectiveness of our system. It is demonstrated that the proposed system is very effective with regard to usability and interface design.

Abstract:Human-computer interface (HCI) based on biomedical signal has the potential value to help persons having motor neuron diseases or physical disability to communicate with outer environment. Compared to other bioelectric signals, Electrooculogram (EOG) signals have the advantages of larger amplitude, lower frequencies and easier to be detected. Besides, the majority of disabled persons have the ability of eye movement control, so it is reasonable and feasible to build a direct communication channel between the computer and eye movement. In this study, a EOG-based virtual keyboard controlling system is introduced, which is composed of EOG signal acquisition, software for online signal processing and a well-designed graphic user interface(GUI). The EOG signal is collected online and the valid blink activities are identified and transferred into the commands for virtual keyboard controlling. The experiments results reveal that the recognition rate for different blink sequences is about 95%, which will approach to 100% after proper trainings.

Abstract:Abstract The high potential for creating brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) and video games for upper limb rehabilitation has been demonstrated in recent years. In this work, we describe the implementation of a prototype BCI with feedback based on a virtual environment to control the lateral movement of a character by predicting the subject’s motor intention. The electroencephalographic signals were processed employing a Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter, Common Spatial Patterns (CSP), and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA). Also, a video game was used as a virtual environment, which was written in C# on the Unity3D platform. The test results showed that the prototype implemented based on electroencephalographic signal acquisition has the potential to take on real-time applications such as avatar control or assistive devices, obtaining a maximum control time of 65 s. In addition, it was noticed that the feedback in an interface plays a crucial role, since it helps the person not only to feel motivated, but also to learn how to have a more consistent motor intention and when little calibration data is recorded, the probability that the system makes erroneous predictions increases. These results demonstrate the usefulness of the development as support for people who require some treatment in the form of upper limb motor rehabilitation, and that the use of virtual environments, such as video games, can motivate such people during the rehabilitation processes.

Abstract:The usage of hand gestures to operate digital devices has grown in recent years, and developing accurate gesture recognition systems using computer vision technology is becoming easier. Voice assistants have also become more common, with developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and natural language processing (NLP) allowing for more accurate voice recognition. Our goal is to create a system which combines both gesture-controlled mouse functionality and voice assistant to execute things that a regular mouse and keyboard can. The GCVA (Gesture Controlled Voice Assistant) comes with a gesture-controlled mouse and a voice assistant. A gesture-controlled mouse uses OpenCV and Media-Pipe, whereas a voice assistant uses AI and NLP concepts to recognize the voice commands given by the user. The system should be used by performing hand gestures and executing the right click, left click, drag, drop, volume control and computer cursor functions, thereby omitting the need for a physical mouse. The success of this system is observed in terms of practicality, stability, and compatibility with physical mechanisms. The voice assistant works and responds to pre-defined commands present in the system. The GCVA system was tested by four different users in order to generate the accuracy scores of mouse gestures and response time graphs for voice assistant. The system yields an accuracy rate of 98%. The system's accuracy and usability showed that hand gesture detection and voice assistants have the potential to replace traditional input devices in the future.
A Hands-free Human-Computer-Interface Platform for Paralyzed Patients Using a TENG-based Eyelash Motion Sensor

Abstract:People with body disabilities as a result of neurological diseases or physical accidents, face daily troubles in some situations that require arm or finger motions. Access to expensive assistive technologies can be difficult, and job opportunities can be low for patients with limited mobility. Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) bring a new concept enabling the design of special sensors that can be used in Human-Computer-Interfaces (HCIs) to support people with disabilities. In this manuscript, it is proposed a novel eye motion sensor based on TENG integrated into an HCI leading to hands-free typing on the computer. We demonstrate that by controlling the cursor, the user can pick up the characters from a virtual keyboard and write an algorithm in the Integrated-Development-Environment (IDE) of Python language. The novel eye sensor recognizes the eyelash motion detected from the triboelectric interaction between human hair and silicone. It is shown that a user is able to write a simple python program to display a message on the computer without the use of hands. Finally, we hope this development can support disabled patients to improve their programming skills and provide improved job opportunities in areas such as information technology or computer science.
Diegetic Graphical User Interfaces and Intuitive Control of Assistive Robots via Eye-gaze

Abstract:Individuals with tetraplegia and similar forms of paralysis suffer physically and emotionally due to a lack of autonomy. To help regain part of this autonomy, assistive robotic arms have been shown to increase living independence. However, users with paralysis pose unique challenging conditions for the control of these devices. In this article, we present the use of Diegetic Graphical User Interfaces, a novel, intuitive, and computationally inexpensive approach for gaze-controlled interfaces applied to robots. By using symbols paired with fiducial markers, interactive buttons can be defined in the real world which the user can trigger via gaze, and which can be embedded easily into the environment. We apply this system to pilot a 3-degree-of-freedom robotic arm for precision pick-and-place tasks. The interface is placed directly on the robot to allow intuitive and direct interaction, eliminating the need for context-switching between external screens, menus, and the robot. After calibration and a brief habituation period, twenty-one participants from multiple backgrounds, ages and eye-sight conditions completed the Yale-CMU-Berkeley (YCB) Block Pick and Place Protocol to benchmark the system, achieving a mean score of 13.71 out of the maximum 16.00 points. Good usability and user experience were reported (System Usability Score of 75.36) while achieving a low task workload measure (NASA-TLX of 44.76). Results show that users can employ multiple interface elements to perform actions with minimal practice and with a small cognitive load. To our knowledge, this is the first easily reconfigurable screenless system that enables robot control entirely via gaze for Cartesian robot control without the need for eye or face gestures.

Abstract:The analysis of the current integration attempts of some modes and use cases of user-machine interaction is presented. The new concept of the user-driven intelligent interface is proposed on the basis of multimodal augmented reality and brain-computer interaction for various applications: in disabilities studies, education, home care, health care, etc. The several use cases of multimodal augmentation are presented. The perspectives of the better human comprehension by the immediate feedback through neurophysical channels by means of brain-computer interaction are outlined. It is shown that brain-computer interface (BCI) technology provides new strategies to overcome limits of the currently available user interfaces, especially for people with functional disabilities. The results of the previous studies of the low end consumer and open-source BCI-devices allow us to conclude that combination of machine learning (ML), multimodal interactions (visual, sound, tactile) with BCI will profit from the immediate feedback from the actual neurophysical reactions classified by ML methods. In general, BCI in combination with other modes of AR interaction can deliver much more information than these types of interaction themselves. Even in the current state the combined AR-BCI interfaces could provide the highly adaptable and personal services, especially for people with functional disabilities.

Abstract:Patients who have lost limb control ability, such as upper limb amputation and high paraplegia, are usually unable to take care of themselves. Establishing a natural, stable, and comfortable human-computer interface (HCI) for controlling rehabilitation assistance robots and other controllable equipments will solve a lot of their troubles. In this study, a complete limbs-free face-computer interface (FCI) framework based on facial electromyography (fEMG) including offline analysis and online control of mechanical equipments was proposed. Six facial movements related to eyebrows, eyes, and mouth were used in this FCI. In the offline stage, 12 models, eight types of features, and three different feature combination methods for model inputing were studied and compared in detail. In the online stage, four well-designed sessions were introduced to control a robotic arm to complete drinking water task in three ways (by touch screen, by fEMG with and without audio feedback) for verification and performance comparison of proposed FCI framework. Three features and one model with an average offline recognition accuracy of 95.3%, a maximum of 98.8%, and a minimum of 91.4% were selected for use in online scenarios. In contrast, the way with audio feedback performed better than that without audio feedback. All subjects completed the drinking task in a few minutes with FCI.
