Abstract:The usability of virtual keyboard based eye-typing systems is currently limited due to the lack of adaptive and user-centered approaches leading to low text entry rate and the need for frequent recalibration. In this work, we propose a set of methods for the dwell time adaptation in asynchronous mode and trial period in synchronous mode for gaze based virtual keyboards. The rules take into account commands that allow corrections in the application, and it has been tested on a newly developed virtual keyboard for a structurally complex language by using a two-stage tree-based character selection arrangement. We propose several dwell-based and dwell-free mechanisms with the multimodal access facility wherein the search of a target item is achieved through gaze detection and the selection can happen via the use of a dwell time, soft-switch, or gesture detection using surface electromyography in asynchronous mode; while in the synchronous mode, both the search and selection may be performed with just the eye-tracker. The system performance is evaluated in terms of text entry rate and information transfer rate with 20 different experimental conditions. The proposed strategy for adapting the parameters over time has shown a significant improvement (more than 40%) over non-adaptive approaches for new users. The multimodal dwell-free mechanism using a combination of eye-tracking and soft-switch provides better performance than adaptive methods with eye-tracking only. The overall system receives an excellent grade on adjective rating scale using the system usability scale and a low weighted rating on the NASA task load index, demonstrating the user-centered focus of the system.

Abstract:The development of human-computer interaction has seen a major change in the last few years, moving in the direction of more user-friendly and effective interfaces. This tendency has prompted researchers to investigate new input techniques, especially in the field of gesture-based control systems. By utilizing both hand and eye gestures to create a gesture-based virtual mouse and keyboard, this paper introduces a novel method of human-computer interaction. The suggested system offers users a smooth and simple way to interact with computers by combining hand gesture recognition and eye-tracking technology. Users can control cursor movement and keyboard inputs without the use of physical peripherals by using the system to track their hand and eye movements and interpret them as commands. The incorporation of eye-tracking technology improves the system's accuracy and responsiveness, enabling more precise cursor control and interaction with elements displayed on the screen. Hand gesture recognition, on the other hand, gives users an ergonomic and natural way to input data, allowing them to carry out commands with straightforward motions. The architecture of the system combines real-time processing capabilities to guarantee low latency and high responsiveness with sophisticated machine-learning algorithms for gesture recognition. Additionally, users can define their gesture commands according to their needs and preferences because the system is flexible and customizable. The suggested gesture-based virtual mouse and keyboard system has undergone rigorous testing and evaluation, and the results show promising performance and usability in a range of scenarios and applications. This novel method of interacting with computers has the potential to improve user experience, accessibility, and productivity in a variety of computing contexts. Abstract:Human Computer Interaction is an emerging technology which refers to a vast number of algorithms and different types of techniques to enhance the interaction process. Eye gaze technology is one of the most significant techniques of modern science and can be used in many areas like security, typing, information tracking etc. The need of the system for physically disable people motivated many researchers to develop systems which can be used only using the eye gaze and blinking. In this paper, we are going to represent the development of a virtual keyboard which work by detecting eye gaze and eye blinking. It involves building a system that capture video directly from PC camera and detects human face, eyes. To detect face accurately we will follow a simple rule as the eyes and lips are always in the sample place as image, which will make the eye detection process much easier. To do this we are going to use an approach that involves the 68 points of face which is specific and must exist in every face as- the eye area, top of the chin, eyebrow, nose, outside edge of face etc. It also detect eye gaze as left, right to select keyboard portion and eye blinking to select the desired key from the virtual keyboard on the board. The goal of this system is to type without using finger or hands. Such types of application are really important and blessings for those people who completely lost the control of their limbs. The methodology is described including flow-charts for each stage of the system and then implementation results has described.

Abstract:Wearable devices are the future of mobile technology, with all the exciting possibilities they offer in terms of ease of usage, compactness, and the ergonomical aspects of such devices. They provide easy accessibility for not only people seeking easier, faster and flexible ways of communicating information between devices, but also individuals with limited mobility, needing disability assistance and with partial or complete blindness. But for the widespread market of upcoming, new-age technology such as wearables, there aren't a lot of options supporting outputs on peripherals other than a screens. As possible future prospects of wearable technology can be their use in virtual environments - to ease navigation in a simulated reality, in healthcare to provide more efficient and quick input of patient data while diagnosing diseases and prescribing medicines, and so on. In this paper, we discuss the making and workings of a wearable keyboard glove that can be used as a keyboard after being connected to a mobile device, smartwatch, or laptop. The setup consists of gloves that have Bluetooth, Switches, and flex sensors. The device can be used as a keyboard by using a combination of the results from the Flex Sensors that are mounted on the fingers. The device measures the movement of the fingers, records the gesture, and maps a character to each gesture. The gestures are recognized by measuring the change in resistance of the flex sensors and then converting them to an angle through a scaling formula. These values are then divided into three equal parts using a mapping function. This effectively gives us three different positions for each finger to recognize spread into 4 fingers. Switches are also provided for the thumb fingers to detect its position. This provides us with a theoretical total number of gestures of 162. The said gesture is sent via Bluetooth to the paired smart device.

Abstract:The non-touch system is a modern approach of computer-interface technology capable of revolutionizing human-computer interaction. The interface allows the user to input data and interact with a human, machine or robot in an uncontrolled environment, treatment or industrial life. However, it is challenging to input data into the machine and interact with man and machine with a variety of complexities such as cluttered environment, gesture tracking, and speed. There are many evolving systems, for example, aerial handwriting, sign language recognition, and finger alphabet recognition require substantial effort for all character learning and overhead processing, thence the accuracy of the classification is reduced. Therefore, this paper proposes a non-touch character writing system that allows users to interact and manage the on-screen virtual keyboards in a secure and healthy way by recognizing few hand gestures. We divide this work into two parts: a) hand gesture recognition; and b) gestural flick input using a virtual keyboard. A user-friendly keyboard interface is displayed on the monitor, which uses a flick input method. A deep learning method with CNN is used to extract the features of a gesture. To determine these features, color segmentation is used to detect the hand; color pixels can be obtained by extracting a particular HSV (hue, saturation, value) and applying threshold masking to the input image. Finally, a support vector machine is used to give a more accurate classification of the hand gestures. The user uses a gestural flick input system to perform non-touch character input and enters the character by viewing the virtual keyboard. The character input is executed based on the recognition of the user's hand gestures. Character input is evaluated based on the average classification accuracy of hand gestures and character recognition, and the accuracy and speed of input. Then, the system is compared with the state-of-the-art algorithms. The experimental results show that the proposed system can recognize seven typical gesture functions and input characters with 97.93% accuracy, which demonstrate the superiority compared to the state-of-the-art algorithms.

Abstract:Human-computer interface (HCI) based on biomedical signal has the potential value to help persons having motor neuron diseases or physical disability to communicate with outer environment. Compared to other bioelectric signals, Electrooculogram (EOG) signals have the advantages of larger amplitude, lower frequencies and easier to be detected. Besides, the majority of disabled persons have the ability of eye movement control, so it is reasonable and feasible to build a direct communication channel between the computer and eye movement. In this study, a EOG-based virtual keyboard controlling system is introduced, which is composed of EOG signal acquisition, software for online signal processing and a well-designed graphic user interface(GUI). The EOG signal is collected online and the valid blink activities are identified and transferred into the commands for virtual keyboard controlling. The experiments results reveal that the recognition rate for different blink sequences is about 95%, which will approach to 100% after proper trainings.

Abstract:This study introduces an ability-based method for personalized keyboard generation, wherein an individual's own movement and human-computer interaction data are used to automatically compute a personalized virtual keyboard layout. Our approach integrates a multidirectional point-select task to characterize cursor control over time, distance, and direction. The characterization is automatically employed to develop a computationally efficient keyboard layout that prioritizes each user's movement abilities through capturing directional constraints and preferences. We evaluated our approach in a study involving 16 participants using inertial sensing and facial electromyography as an access method, resulting in significantly increased communication rates using the personalized keyboard (52.0 bits/min) when compared to a generically optimized keyboard (47.9 bits/min). Our results demonstrate the ability to effectively characterize an individual's movement abilities to design a personalized keyboard for improved communication. This work underscores the importance of integrating a user's motor abilities when designing virtual interfaces.

Abstract:Computers today aren't just confined to laptops and desktops. Mobile gadgets like mobile phones and laptops also make use of it. However, one input device that hasn't changed in the last 50 years is the QWERTY keyboard. Users of virtual keyboards can type on any surface as if it were a keyboard thanks to sensor technology and artificial intelligence. In this research, we use the idea of image processing to create an application for seeing a computer keyboard using a novel framework which can detect hand gestures with precise accuracy while also being sustainable and financially viable. A camera is used to capture keyboard images and finger movements which subsequently acts as a virtual keyboard. In addition, a visible virtual mouse that accepts finger coordinates as input is also described in this study. This system has a direct benefit of reducing peripheral cost, reducing electronics waste generated due to external devices and providing accessibility to people who cannot use the traditional keyboard and mouse.

A Monte Carlo Simulation Approach for Quantitatively Evaluating Keyboard Layouts for Gesture Input

Abstract:Gesture typing is a method of text entry that is ergonomically well-suited to the form factor of touchscreen devices and allows for much faster input than tapping each letter individually. The QWERTY keyboard was, however, not designed with gesture input in mind and its particular layout results in a high frequency of gesture recognition errors. In this paper, we describe a new approach to quantifying the frequency of gesture input recognition errors through the use of modeling and simulating realistically imperfect user input. We introduce new methodologies for modeling randomized gesture inputs, efficiently reconstructing words from gestures on arbitrary keyboard layouts, and using these in conjunction with a frequency weighted lexicon to perform Monte Carlo evaluations of keyboard error rates or any other arbitrary metric. An open source framework, Dodona, is also provided that allows for these techniques to be easily employed and customized in the evaluation of a wide spectrum of possible keyboards and input methods. Finally, we perform an optimization procedure over permutations of the QWERTY keyboard to demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach and describe ways that future analyses can build upon these results.

Abstract:We propose an eye-shaped keyboard for high-speed text entry in virtual reality (VR), having the shape of dual eyes with characters arranged along the curved eyelids, which ensures low density and short spacing of the keys. The eye-shaped keyboard references the QWERTY key sequence, allowing the users to benefit from their experience using the QWERTY keyboard. The user interacts with an eye-shaped keyboard using rays controlled with both the hands. A character can be entered in one step by moving the rays from the inner eye regions to regions of the characters. A high-speed auto-complete system was designed for the eye-shaped keyboard. We conducted a pilot study to determine the optimal parameters, and a user study to compare our eye-shaped keyboard with the QWERTY and circular keyboards. For beginners, the eye-shaped keyboard performed significantly more efficiently and accurately with less task load and hand movement than the circular keyboard. Compared with the QWERTY keyboard, the eye-shaped keyboard is more accurate and significantly reduces hand translation while maintaining similar efficiency. Finally, to evaluate the potential of eye-shaped keyboards, we conducted another user study. In this study, the participants were asked to type continuously for three days using the proposed eye-shaped keyboard, with two sessions per day. In each session, participants were asked to type for 20min, and then their typing performance was tested. The eye-shaped keyboard was proven to be efficient and promising, with an average speed of 19.89 words per minute (WPM) and mean uncorrected error rate of 1.939%. The maximum speed reached 24.97 WPM after six sessions and continued to increase.

Abstract:Recent advancements in eye tracking technology are driving the adoption of gaze-assisted interaction as a rich and accessible human-computer interaction paradigm. Gaze-assisted interaction serves as a contextual, non-invasive, and explicit control method for users without disabilities; for users with motor or speech impairments, text entry by gaze serves as the primary means of communication. Despite significant advantages, gaze-assisted interaction is still not widely accepted because of its inherent limitations: 1) Midas touch, 2) low accuracy for mouse-like interactions, 3) need for repeated calibration, 4) visual fatigue with prolonged usage, 5) lower gaze typing speed, and so on. This dissertation research proposes a gaze-assisted, multimodal, interaction paradigm, and related frameworks and their applications that effectively enable gaze-assisted interactions while addressing many of the current limitations. In this regard, we present four systems that leverage gaze-assisted interaction: 1) a gaze- and foot-operated system for precise point-and-click interactions, 2) a dwell-free, foot-operated gaze typing system. 3) a gaze gesture-based authentication system, and 4) a gaze gesture-based interaction toolkit. In addition, we also present the goals to be achieved, technical approach, and overall contributions of this dissertation research.

Abstract:Healthy people use a keyboard and mouse as standard input devices for controlling a computer. However, these input devices are usually not suitable for people with severe physical disabilities. This study aims to design and implement a suitable and reliable human–computer interactive (HCI) interface for disabled users by integrating both eye tracking technology and lip motion recognition. Eye movements control the cursor position on the computer screen. An eye gaze followed by a lip motion of the mouth opening served as a mouse click action. Seven lip motion features were extracted to discriminate mouth openings and mouth closures with the cumulative sum control chart algorithm. A novel smoothing technique called the threshold-based Savitzky–Golay smoothing filter was proposed to stabilize the cursor movement due to the inherent jittery motions of eyes and to reduce eye tracking latencies. In this study, a fixation experiment with nine dots was carried out to evaluate the efficacy of eye gaze data smoothing. A Chinese text entry experiment based on the on-screen keyboard with four keypad sizes was designed to evaluate the influence of the keypad size on the Chinese text entry rate. The results of the fixation experiment indicated that the threshold-based Savitzky–Golay smoothing filter with a threshold value of two standard deviations, a polynomial order of 3, and a window length of 61 can significantly improve the stability of eye cursor movements by 44.86% on average. The averaged Chinese text entry rate achieved 4.41 wpm with the dynamical enlargeable keypads. The current results encouraged us to utilize the proposed HCI interface for disabled users in the future.

Abstract:AIMS This study investigates the relationship between attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings prior to, during, and after leaving treatment, and changes in clinical outcome following inpatient alcohol treatment. METHODS A longitudinal design was used in which participants were interviewed at admission (within 5 days of entry), and 6 months following departure. The sample comprised 150 patients in an inpatient alcohol treatment programme who met ICD-10 criteria for alcohol dependence. The full sample was interviewed at admission to treatment. Six months after departure from treatment, 120 (80%) were re-interviewed. RESULTS Significant improvements in drinking behaviours (frequency, quantity and reported problems), psychological problems and quality of life were reported. Frequent AA attenders had superior drinking outcomes to non-AA attenders and infrequent attenders. Those who attended AA on a weekly or more frequent basis after treatment reported greater reductions in alcohol consumption and more abstinent days. This relationship was sustained after controlling for potential confounding variables. Frequent AA attendance related only to improved drinking outcomes. Despite the improved outcomes, many of the sample had alcohol and psychiatric problems at follow-up. CONCLUSIONS The importance of aftercare has long been acknowledged. Despite this, adequate aftercare services are often lacking. The findings support the role of Alcoholics Anonymous as a useful aftercare resource.

Abstract:Nowadays, gesture-based technology is revolutionizing the world and lifestyles, and the users are comfortable and care about their needs, for example, in communication, information security, the convenience of day-to-day operations and so forth. In this case, hand movement information provides an alternative way for users to interact with people, machines or robots. Therefore, this paper presents a character input system using a virtual keyboard based on the analysis of hand movements. We analyzed the signals of the accelerometer, gyroscope, and electromyography (EMG) for movement activity. We explored potential features of removing noise from input signals through the wavelet denoising technique. The envelope spectrum is used for the analysis of the accelerometer and gyroscope and cepstrum for the EMG signal. Furthermore, the support vector machine (SVM) is used to train and detect the signal to perform character input. In order to validate the proposed model, signal information is obtained from predefined gestures, that is, “double-tap”, “hold-fist”, “wave-left”, “wave-right” and “spread-finger” of different respondents for different input actions such as “input a character”, “change character”, “delete a character”, “line break”, “space character”. The experimental results show the superiority of hand gesture recognition and accuracy of character input compared to state-of-the-art systems.

Abstract:Virtual reality is a brand-new technology that can be applied extensively. To realize virtual reality, certain types of human-computer interaction equipment are necessary. Existing virtual reality technologies often rely on cameras, data gloves, game pads, and other equipment. These equipment are either bulky, inconvenient to carry and use, or expensive to popularize. Therefore, the development of a convenient and low-cost high-precision human-computer interaction device can contribute positively to the development of virtual reality technology. In this study, a gesture recognition wristband that can realize a full keyboard and multicommand input is developed. The wristband is convenient to wear, low in cost, and does not affect other daily operations of the hand. This wristband is based on physiological anatomy as well as aided by active sensor and machine learning technology; it can achieve a maximum accuracy of 92.6% in recognizing 26 letters. This wristband offers broad application prospects in the fields of gesture command recognition, assistive devices for the disabled, and wearable electronics.

By mapping a few of them with the mouse and keyboard, the computer will recognise the user's gesture and respond appropriately.
