Abstract:OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the influence of fluoride and an acidic environment on the mechanical properties of NiTi orthodontic wires (NiTiW) in artificial saliva. DESIGN A prospective laboratory investigation. SETTING Department of Stomatology, First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China. MATERIALS AND METHODS Commercial, round 0.016-inch NiTiW were immersed in 0% or 0.05% Natrium-Fluoride-containing artificial saliva at a pH of 4 or 6 for one or three days, respectively. NiTiW were examined with a three-point bending test, Vickers' microhardness tests and surface morphology observation (SEM). RESULTS A pH of 4 increased microhardness and decreased the three-point bending strength significantly (P≤0.05), whereas immersion time and fluoride concentration had no significant influence on the microhardness or on the three-point bending strength (P>0.05). When examining the test group NiTiWs after three days of immersion at a pH of 4 the SEM revealed a rough surface morphology, a damaged oxide layer and signs of corrosion. CONCLUSIONS The most influential factor for decreasing the unloading force and increasing the hardness seems to be the pH value, whereas immersion time and NaF addition do not have a major influence.
Metallurgical Characterization of Controlled Memory Wire Nickel-Titanium Rotary Instruments

Abstract:Introduction: To improve the fracture resistance of nickel-titanium (NiTi) files, manufacturers have introduced new alloys and developed new manufacturing processes for the fabrication of NiTi files. This study aimed to examine the phase transformation behavior and microstructure of NiTi instruments from a novel controlled memory NiTi wire (CM wire). Methods: Instruments of Endo Sequence (ES), Pro File (PF), Pro File Vortex (Vortex), Twisted Files (IF), Typhoon (TYP), and Typhoon (TM) CM (TYP CM), all size 25/.04, were examined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and x-ray diffraction (XRD). Microstructures of etched instruments were observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with x-ray energy-dispersive spectrometric (EDS) analyses. Results: The DSC analyses showed that each segment of the TYP CM and Vortex instruments had an austenite transformation completion or austenite-finish (A(f)) temperature exceeding 37 degrees C, whereas the NiTi instruments made from conventional superelastic NiTi wire (ES, PF, and TYP) and TF had A(f) temperatures substantially below mouth temperature. The higher A(f) temperature of TYP CM instruments was consistent with a mixture of austenite and martensite structure, which was observed at room temperature with XRD. All NiTi instruments had room temperature martensite microstructures consisting of colonies of lenticular features with substantial twinning. EDS analysis indicated that the precipitates in all NiTi instruments were titanium-rich, with an approximate composition of Ti2Ni. Conclusions: The TYP CM and Vortex instruments with heat treatment contribute to increase austenite transformation temperature. The CM instrument has significant changes in the phase transformation behavior, compared with conventional superelastic NiTi instruments. (1 Endod 2011;37:1566-1571)
[Comparison of Mechanical Properties on Different Phase Transformation Points of Nickel-Titanium Orthodontic Wires].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To compare the mechanical properties of different phase transformation of nickel-titanium orthodontic archwires.METHODS:Nickel-titanium orthodontic archwires with same-sized (0.016") but different phase transformation were examined using a three-point bend test. Samples were tested at same conditions and oral temperature(37 degree), but in different utmost strain capacity, then the strain-stress chart was obtained, the phase transformation point (Af) was also examined.RESULT:The wires of the highest phase transformation point had the least orthodontic force; on the contrast the least phase transformation point had the highest orthodontic force at 3.0 mm utmost strain capacity. The orthodontic forces were not different at the little strain capacity (P >0.05), but which was significantly different adove the 0.5 mm (P<0.05), which was same as 3.0 mm.CONCLUSION:The nickel-titanium orthodontic archwires with high level of phase transformation have low orthodontic forces and more stability.

Abstract:Introduction The performance and mechanical properties of nickel-titanium (NiTi) instruments are influenced by factors such as cross-section, flute design, raw material, and manufacturing processes. Many improvements have been proposed by manufacturers during the past decade to provide clinicians with safer and more efficient instruments. Methods The mechanical performance of NiTi alloys is sensitive to their microstructure and associated thermomechanical treatment history. Heat treatment or thermal processing is one of the most fundamental approaches toward adjusting the transition temperature in NiTi alloy, which affects the fatigue resistance of NiTi endodontic files. The newly developed NiTi instruments made from controlled memory wire, M-Wire (Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, OK), or R-phase wire represent the next generation of NiTi alloys with improved flexibility and fatigue resistance. The advantages of NiTi files for canal cleaning and shaping are decreased canal transportation and ledging, a reduced risk of file fracture, and faster and more efficient instrumentation. The clinician must understand the nature of different NiTi raw materials and their impact on instrument performance because many new instruments are introduced on a regular basis. Results This review summarizes the metallurgical properties of next-generation NiTi instruments, the impact of thermomechanical treatment on instrument flexibility, and the resistance to cyclic fatigue and torsion. Conclusions The aim of this review was to provide clinicians with the knowledge necessary for evidence-based practices, maximizing the benefits from the selection and application of NiTi rotary instruments for root canal treatment.
VSL#3 Probiotic-Mixture Induces Remission in Patients with Active Ulcerative Colitis

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIMS:Intestinal bacteria have been implicated in the initiation and perpetuation of IBD; in contrast, “probiotic bacteria” have properties possibly effective in treating and preventing relapse of IBD. We evaluated the safety and efficacy of VSL#3 and the components, and the composition of the biopsy-associated microbiota in patients with active mild to moderate ulcerative colitis (UC).METHODS:Thirty-four ambulatory patients with active UC received open label VSL#3, 3,600 billion bacteria daily in two divided doses for 6 wk. The presence of biopsy-associated bacteria was detected using a nucleic acid-based method and the presence of VSL#3 species confirmed by DNA sequencing of 16S rRNA.RESULTS:Thirty-two patients completed 6 wk of VSL#3 treatment and 2 patients did not have the final endoscopic assessment. Intent to treat analysis demonstrated remission (UCDAI ≤ 2) in 53% (n = 18); response (decrease in UCDAI ≥ 3, but final score ≥3) in 24% (n = 8); no response in 9% (n = 3); worsening in 9% (n = 3); and failure to complete the final sigmoidoscopy assessment in 5% (n = 2). There were no biochemical or clinical adverse events related to VSL#3. Two of the components of VSL#3 were detected by PCR/DGGE in biopsies collected from 3 patients in remission.CONCLUSION:Treatment of patients with mild to moderate UC, not responding to conventional therapy, with VSL#3 resulted in a combined induction of remission/response rate of 77% with no adverse events. At least some of the bacterial species incorporated in the probiotic product reached the target site in amounts that could be detected.
Phase Transformation and Mechanical Behaviour of Different Heat-Treated Nickel-Titanium Rotary Instruments

Abstract:Objectives: This study evaluated the phase composition, phase transformation behaviour, and mechanical properties of five heat-treated NiTi instruments. Methods: ProTaper NEXT (M-wire, PTN), ProTaper Gold (Gold-wire, PTG), One Curve (C-wire, OC), EdgeTaper Platinum (Fire-wire, ETP), NeoNiTi (electrical discharge machining-wire, NNA), and ProTaper Universal (conventional wire, PTU, control) with #25-tip size were tested (n = 12/group) for cyclic fatigue resistance (number of cycles to failure; NCF) and torsional resistance (angle of rotation to fracture and maximum torque at fracture [ultimate torsional strength]). The geometry and fracture surfaces of the tested instruments were examined by scanning electron microscopy. The phase transformation temperature and phase composition of the instruments were evaluated using differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. Data were statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test, with the significance level set at 5%. Results: PTG showed the highest NCF (P < .05) at 37°C, while ETP exhibited the highest angle of rotation to fracture, ultimate torsional strength, and stiffness (P < .05). Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated typical clusters of fatigue striations and numerous cracks after cyclic fatigue fracture, whereas there was a concentric abrasion pattern with a dimple and microvoids at the centre after torsional fracture. In differential scanning calorimetry curves, austenite-finishing temperatures of heat-treated instruments were higher than 37°C, whereas that of PTU was lower than 37°C. PTU showed strong peaks of austenite at 25 and 37°C, whereas ETP showed a strong peak of R-phase at 25°C, but mostly austenite phase at 37°C in X-ray diffraction. Conclusions: Geometry, alloy type, and phase transformation temperatures of NiTi instruments affected their mechanical behaviour. Clinical relevance: PTG showed the highest NCF, suitable for markedly curved canals. ETP had the highest torsional resistance, appropriate for narrow and constricted canals.
Mechanical Properties of Controlled Memory and Superelastic Nickel-Titanium Wires Used in the Manufacture of Rotary Endodontic Instruments

Abstract:Introduction; The aim of this study was to investigate the structure and mechanical properties of newly developed controlled memory (CM) nickel-titanium wires used in the manufacture of rotary endodontic instruments. Methods: The composition and the phase transformation behavior of both types of wires were examined by x-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Conventional superelastic (SE) nickel-titanium wire was used as a control. The mechanical properties of the wires at selected temperatures (room temperature, 37 degrees C, and 60 degrees C) were evaluated with tensile, cyclic tensile, and cantilever bending tests by using an Instron 3365 universal testing machine. The data of austenitic transformation finishing temperature (A(f)) were analyzed statistically by using 1-way analysis of variance test at a significance level of P < .05. Results: The raw CM wires contained a nickel content of 50.7% +/- 0.5% and possessed a relatively higher Af than SE wires (P < .05). The critical plateau stress and ultimate tensile strength of the CM wires were lower than they were for the SE wires, but the maximum strain before fracture of the CM wires (58.4% +/- 7.5% to 84.7% +/- 6.8%) was more than 3 times higher than it was for SE wires (16.7% +/- 3.8% to 27.5% +/- 5.4%). The maximum strain of the CM wires with a diameter of 1.22 mm tested at room temperature (23 degrees C +/- 2 degrees C) was up to 84% +/- 6.4%. CM wires were not SE at either room temperature or 37 degrees C; however, they exhibited superelasticity when heated to 60 degrees C. Conclusions: The raw CM wires exhibited different phase transformation behavior and mechanical properties when compared with SE wires, attributing to the special heat treatment history of CM wires. This study suggested greater flexibility of endodontic instruments manufactured with CM wires than similar instruments made of conventional SE wires. (J Endod 2012;38:1535-1540)

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To characterize austenite, martensite and R phase temperatures as well as transition temperature ranges of the commonly used nickel-titanium (NiTi) orthodontic arch wires selected from several manufacturers.METHODS:Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method was used to study the phase transformation temperatures and the phase transition processes of 9 commonly used NiTi alloys (types: 0.406 mm, 0.406 mm x 0.559 mm).RESULTS:The austenite finish temperatures of A, B, D NiTi wires were 22.4 CT, 21.9 degrees C, 22.5 degrees C, respectively. No phase transformation was detected during oral temperature. It indicated that these types of NiTi wires did not possess shape memory property. For C and H NiTi wires, no phase transformation was detected during the scanning temperature range, suggesting that these two types of wires did not possess shape memory either. The austenite finish temperatures of E, G and I NiTi wires were 34.3 degrees C, 36.6 degrees C, 38.5 degrees C, respectively, which were close to the oral temperature and presented as martensitic-austenitic structures at room temperature, suggesting that the NiTi wires listed above had good shape memory effect. Although F NiTi wire also showed martensitic-austenitic structures at room temperature, its austenite finish temperature (61.5 degrees C) was much higher than oral temperature.CONCLUSIONS:The transformation phase temperatures and transformation behavior were varied among different NiTi alloys, leading to variability in shape memory effect.

Abstract:The flexibility of NiTi based endodontic files is improved by heat treatment, leading to lower risk of failure, ledges, and canal transportation during the preparation of curved root canals. The aim of this study is to investigate and clearly highlight the influence of every parameter of heat treatment on the flexibility of NiTi wires and thus of endodontic instruments. A full factorial Design of Experiment (DoE) and a designed bending–torsion bench following the ISO 3630-1 standard were used for this investigation. Temperature, holding time, and cooling method were selected as contributing factors, while maximum bending moment, hysteresis size, and stiffness during martensitic transformation were selected as outputs. Regression analysis was performed to estimate the relationship between contributing and output variables to assess how the experimentation fits with the model. The experimental results showed that wires heated at 425 °C for 30 min are more flexible. Moreover, heat treatment temperature is the most critical factor influencing the flexibility and hysteresis size of the NiTi wire followed by the holding time, while the cooling method has a negligible effect. The regression analysis showed that the model is effective at predicting the relationship between contributing factors, bending moment response, and hysteresis size.

The Effects of Temperature and Time of Heat Treatment on Thermo-Mechanical Properties of Custom-Made NiTi Orthodontic Closed Coil Springs

Abstract:Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) springs have been increasingly used in orthodontics; however, no optimum condition of heat treatment has been reported. Therefore, this research was conducted to determine the optimum heat-treatment temperature and duration for the fabrication of NiTi-closed coil springs by investigating their effects on thermo-mechanical properties. As-drawn straight NiTi wires of 0.2 mm diameter were used to fabricate closed coil springs of 0.9 mm lumen diameter. The springs were heat-treated at three different temperatures (400, 450, and 500 °C) with three different durations (20, 40, and 60 min). Electron Probe Micro-Analysis (EPMA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) were used to investigate element composition and thermo-mechanical properties, respectively. Custom-made NiTi closed coil springs composed of 49.41%-Ti and 50.57%-Ni by atomic weight, where their DSC curves of 500 °C presented the obvious endothermic and exothermic peaks, and the austenite finish temperature (Af) were approximately 25 °C. With increasing temperature, deactivation curves presented decreased plateau slopes generating higher superelastic ratios (SE ratios). At 500 °C, closed coil springs showed superelastic tendency with lower stress hysteresis. The thermo-mechanical properties were significantly influenced by heat-treatment temperature rather than duration. The optimum parameter appeared to be 500 °C for 40 min to produce appropriate force delivery levels, relatively low plateau slope, and lower hysteresis for orthodontic use.
Effect of Heat Treatment on Mechanical Properties of Nickel-Titanium Instruments

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the torsional resistance, cyclic fatigue resistance, and bending stiffness of nickel-titanium (NiTi) file systems with different heat treatments and cross-sectional designs. Methods: WaveOne Primary treated with memory-triple (MT) heat treatment (WOMT) was compared with WaveOne Primary (WO) and WaveOne Gold Primary (WOG). Torsional resistance test was performed using a customized device, and the distortion angle, ultimate strength, and toughness were evaluated. For cyclic fatigue resistance test, the instruments were reciprocated with continuous 4 mm up-and-down movement until fracture in a customized device, and the time to fracture was compared. Fracture surfaces of each group were examined under the scanning electron microscope. Bending stiffness was measured using a custom-made device. The results were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the Tukey's post hoc comparison at a significance level of 95%. Results: WOMT showed higher ultimate strength and toughness than the other systems (P < .05). WOMT also showed highest cyclic fatigue resistance among the tested groups (P < .05). WO had the highest bending stiffness than others, whereas WOMT had a larger residual angle than others (P < .05). Conclusions: This new MT heat treatment technique makes NiTi file more flexible and improves its mechanical properties. In addition, the effect of heat treatment on flexibility was found to be more significant than that of the cross-sectional area.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: In recent years, nickel-titanium (Ni-Ti) archwires have been developed that undergo thermal transitions. Before the practitioner can fully utilize these products, the effect of those transitions within the clinical application must be understood.METHODS: The transitional temperatures and mechanical stiffnesses of 3 archwire alloys--stainless steel, beta-titanium, and Ni-Ti--were investigated were for 7 products. Among the nickel-titanium alloys, 2 were thought to represent classic Ni-Ti products and 3 copper (Cu)-Ni-Ti products. By using 2 techniques, differential scanning calorimetry to measure heat flow and dynamic mechanical analysis to measure storage modulus, transition temperatures were evaluated from -30 degrees C to +80 degrees C.RESULTS: With regard to the first technique, no transitions were observed for the stainless steel alloy, the beta-titanium alloy, and 1 of the 2 classic Ni-Ti products. For the other classic Ni-Ti product, however, a martensitic-austenitic transition was suggested on heating, and a reverse transformation was suggested on cooling. As expected, the Cu-Ni-Ti 27, 35, and 40 products manifested austenitic finish temperatures of 29.3 degrees C, 31.4 degrees C, and 37.3 degrees C, respectively, as the enthalpy increased from 2.47 to 3.18 calories per gram. With regard to the second technique, the storage modulus at a low frequency of 0.1 Hz paralleled static mechanical tests for the stainless steel alloy (183 gigapascal [GPa]), the beta-titanium alloy (64 GPa), and the Nitinol Classic (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif) product that represented a stable martensitic phase (41 GPa). The remaining 4 Ni-Ti products generally varied from 20 to 35 GPa when the low-temperature or martensitic phase was present and from 60 to 70 GPa after the high-temperature or austenitic phase had formed.CONCLUSIONS: From the clinical viewpoint, the Orthonol (Rocky Mountain Orthodontics, Denver, Colo), Cu-Ni-Ti 27, Cu-Ni-Ti 35, and Cu-Ni-Ti 40 (SDS/Ormco, Glendora, Calif) products increased at least twofold in stiffness as temperature increased, best emulating the stiffness of Nitinol Classic below the transformational temperature and the stiffness of TMA (SDS/Ormco, Glendora, Calif) above the transformational temperature. Of the 3 Cu-Ni-Ti products, the least differences were found between Cu-Ni-Ti 27 and Cu-Ni-Ti 35, thereby questioning the justification for 3 similar products.

Abstract:Background Nickel-titanium (NiTi) archwires are considered the most attractive wires during the first stage of orthodontic treatment because of their unique properties throughout several generations. This study aimed to evaluate three different NiTi wires in terms of their elemental composition, transformation behavior, crystalline structure, and mechanical properties. Materials and methods The study used three different groups of NiTi archwires with dimensions of 0.016 x 0.022-inch (American Orthodontics®, Sheboygan, WI, USA). The first group included six superelastic NiTi archwires (NT3-SE®), with normal force and a stable structure that was not affected by temperature changes. The second group included six heat-activated NiTi archwires activated at 25°C (Thermal Ti-D®), with moderate force and a sensitive structure to thermal changes, especially at room temperature. The third group included six heat-activated NiTi archwires activated at 35°C (Thermal Ti-Lite®), with light force and a sensitive structure to thermal changes, especially at body temperature. X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was performed to determine wire element composition, whereas differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was performed to determine the austenite finish temperature (Af). The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to identify the crystalline structure at room temperature, and a three-point bending test was carried out under constant temperature (37°C) with respect to the instructions of ISO15841/DIS to evaluate the mechanical properties of these wires. Results The XRF analysis revealed that the superelastic NiTi archwires (NT3-SE) were composed of NiTi and chrome, whereas the heat-activated wires (Thermal Ti-D and Thermal Ti-Lite) were composed of NiTi and copper. The DSC showed the Af was at +16.84°C for the superelastic type (NT3-SE), +23°C for the heat-activated at 25°C (Thermal Ti-D), and +33.99°C for the heat-activated at 35°C (Thermal Ti-Lite). The XRD analysis identified the crystalline structure at room temperature for the superelastic type (NT3-SE) as austenite, while for thermal types (Thermal Ti-D and Thermal Ti-Lite) were a compound structure of austenite and martensite phase. Finally, the bending test showed that the highest forces were delivered from the superelastic type (NT3-SE), followed by heat-activated at 25°C (Thermal Ti-D), while the lowest forces were delivered from heat-activated at 35°C (Thermal Ti-Lite). There was no significant difference between the superelastic type (NT3-SE) and thermally activated type at 25°C (Thermal Ti-D), while there was a significant difference between the two previous types and the thermally activated type at 35°C (Thermal Ti-Lite) for all studied unloading points. Conclusions The thermal types of archwires (Thermal Ti-D and Thermal Ti-Lite) had lower unloading values in comparison with the superelastic type (NT3-SE). The elemental composition was different between the superelastic wires and the thermal ones. The superelastic wires were also different from the other two types in terms of crystalline structure. The three types of archwires had an activation degree located in the range of oral cavity variations.

Abstract:Objective: To compare the phase transformation behavior, bending property and cyclic fatigue resistance of CM-wire, R-phase and M-wire nickel-titanium endodontic files treated by 3 heat treatment techniques. Methods: Hyflex CM (25 mm, 25#/0.06) made from CM wire, TF (25 mm, 25#/0.06) made from R-phase heat treatment, ProTaper Next X2 (25 mm, tip size 25#/0.06) made from M-wire, Mtwo (25 mm, 25#/0.06) and ProTaper F2 (25 mm, tip size 25#/0.08) made from conventional nickel-titanium wire were chosen. Five of each files were chosen for differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) evaluation (n=5). The specimens were prepared from adjacent portions of the shaft. The weight and length were typically (20±1) mg and 2-3 mm. Another eight of the 5 nickel-titanium files were undergone cantilever-bending test, respectively (n=8). Further ten of the 5 instruments were submitted to the cyclic fatigue test by using a simulated metal root canal (n=10). The data of M(s), M(f), A(s), A(f), ΔH, bending load, number of cyclic fatigue (NCF), fragment length were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance at a significance level of P<0.05. Results: The A(f) of Hyflex CM [(60.27±0.94) ℃] and ProTaper Next [(51.40±0.32) ℃] were higher than body temperature of 37 ℃. The bending load values at 3.0 mm deflection of Hyflex CM [(0.867±0.074) N], TF [(1.275±0.146) N], Mtwo [(2.281±0.426) N], ProTaper Next [(3.104±0.252) N] and ProTaper [(4.227±0.483) N] increased gradually and significantly. The NCF of Hyflex CM (582±99), TF (427±85), ProTaper Next (158±22), Mtwo (129±32) and ProTaper (65±20) decreased gradually. Conclusions: The 3 heat treatment techniques exert tremendous influence on the phase transformation behavior and mechanical characteristics of the files, which demonstrate improved bending property and cyclic fatigue resistance than the conventional ones.
Mechanical properties of nickel-titanium endodontic instruments and the effect of sodium hypochlorite treatment

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to assess the mechanical properties--torsional moment, maximum angular deflection, maximum bending moment, and permanent angular deflection--of four brands of nickel-titanium (NiTi) endodontic file, and compare them with a conventional stainless-steel instrument, both in the presence and absence of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl). NiTi instruments from four manufacturers were randomly selected and subjected to NaOCl treatment for 12 or 48 h, or not at all. The mechanical properties under test were then measured automatically by a digital torque memocouple. Torsional moment and maximum angular deflection indicate the resistance to torsional fracture of an instrument, maximum bending moment the stiffness of the instrument, and permanent angular deflection the strength of the base alloy. All instruments evaluated complied with or exceeded ADA/ANSI Specification No. 28, with the sole exception of the Maillefer ISO size 40 for torsional moment. JS Dental and McSpadden NiTi files were the most resistant to torsional fracture, but all NiTi files were inferior when compared with stainless-steel files from a previous study. However, NiTi files were superior in flexibility, and Maillefer and Brasseler instruments were the best of the instruments tested. NiTi files also had negligible permanent deformation angles. Furthermore, for all properties tested, NaOCl had no statistically significant effect.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: A systematic review on nickel-titanium wires was performed. The strategy was focused on Entrez-PubMed-OLDMEDLINE, Scopus and BioMed Central from 1963 to 2008. METHODS: Papers in English and French describing the behavior of these wires and laboratorial methods to identify crystalline transformation were considered. A total of 29 papers were selected. RESULTS: Nickel-titanium wires show exceptional features in terms of elasticity and shape memory effects. However, clinical applications request a deeper knowledge of these properties in order to allow the professional to use them in a rational manner. In addition, the necessary information regarding each alloy often does not correspond to the information given by the manufacturer. Many alloys called "superelastic" do not present this effect; they just behave as less stiff alloys, with a larger springback if compared to the stainless steel wires. CONCLUSIONS: Laboratory tests are the only means to observe the real behavior of these materials, including temperature transition range (TTR) and applied tensions. However, it is also possible to determine in which TTR these alloys change the crystalline structure.

Beyond the strain recoverability of martensitic transformation in NiTi

Abstract:Tensile deformation of a medical grade NiTi wire was investigated in a wide temperature range from −100 °C to 450 °C. Supplemental in-situ electrical resistance, synchrotron x-ray diffraction, digital image correlation and ex-situ TEM methods were employed to characterize deformation/transformation processes acting at high temperatures and stresses. Conventional superelastic deformation due to stress induced martensitic transformation taking place around room temperature becomes gradually accompanied by dislocation slip in the temperature range 30–80 °C. With further increasing temperature, stress induced martensitic transformation still proceeds in localized manner but the length of the forward stress plateau increases, volume fraction of the martensite phase at the end of forward stress plateau decreases, unrecovered strain increases and {114} austenite twins appeared in the microstructure of deformed wires. These observations were explained by the activity of a new deformation mechanism - stress induced B2=>B19´=>B2T martensitic transformation into twinned austenite coupled with dislocation slip. Thermodynamic and crystallographic aspects of this B2=>B19´=>B2T martensitic transformation breaking the strain recoverability limit of cubic to monoclinic martensitic transformation were outlined. To rationalize the observed thermomechanical responses of the wire at elevated temperatures, a TRIP like deformation mechanism based on this transformation was incorporated into an existing constitutive model of thermomechanical behaviors of NiTi. The model was numerically implemented into finite element code, simulations were performed and compared with the experimentally observed behaviors. It was found that the B2=>B19´=>B2T martensitic transformation destroys the shape memory functionality of NiTi but renders it excellent ductility in thermomechanical loads, introduces nanoscale heterogeneity into its austenitic microstructure and allows for its low temperature processing and shape setting.

Abstract:Introduction: The bending and torsional properties of thermomechanically treated K3XF (SybronEndo, Orange, CA) nickel-titanium instruments in relation to their phase transformation behavior were evaluated. Methods: NiTi instruments K3 (SybronEndo) and K3XF, both in sizes 25/.04 and 40/.04, were examined by differential scanning calorimetry and X-ray diffraction. The metal composition was determined by scanning electron microscopy with X-ray energy-dispersive spectrometric analyses. The bending property of K3 and K3XF instruments was measured in a cantilever-bending test with a maximum deflection of 4.00 mm. A torsional test of the instruments was evaluated according to the American National Standards Institute/American Dental Association Specification No. 28. Results: K3 and K3XF instruments had approximately the same chemical composition with a nickel content of 48-49 atomic %. The differential scanning calorimetry analyses showed that each segment of the K3XF instruments (24.89 degrees C +/- 1.98 degrees C) had a higher austenite finish temperature than the K3 instruments (17.63 degrees C +/- 1.76 degrees C) (P < .05). The bending load values were significantly lower for K3XF than for K3 in the superelastic ranges (P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference between K3 and K3XF in the maximum torque or maximum angular deflection before failure. The torque at fracture values of K3 and K3XF increased significantly with the diameter (P < .05). Conclusions: K3XF exhibited different phase transformation behavior and flexibility when compared with K3, which may be attributed to the special heat treatment history of K3XF instruments.

Abstract:The structural and thermophysical characteristics of an Ni-rich NiTi alloy rod produced on a laboratory scale was studied. The soak temperature of the solution heat-treatment steps above 850 °C taking advantage of the precipitate dissolution to provide a matrix homogenization, but it takes many hours (24 to 48) when used without thermomechanical steps. Therefore, the suitable reheating to apply between the forging process steps is very important, because the product's structural characteristics are dependent on the thermomechanical processing history, and the time required to expose the material to high temperatures during the processing is reduced. The structural characteristics were investigated after solution heat treatment at 900 °C and 950 °C for 120 min, and these heat treatments were compared with as-forged sample structural characteristics (one hot deformation step after 800 °C for a 30 min reheat stage). The phase-transformation temperatures were analyzed through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the structural characterization was performed through synchrotron radiation-based X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) at room temperature. It was observed that the solution heat treatment at 950 °C/120 min presents a lower martensitic reversion finish temperature (Af); the matrix was fully austenitic; and it had a hardness of about 226 HV. Thus, this condition is the most suitable for the reheating stages between the hot forging-process steps to be applied to this alloy to produce materials that can display a superelasticity effect, for applications such as crack sensors or orthodontic archwires.
