Abstract:Lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) co-doped by mixed lanthanide ions is a preeminent candidate for ratiometric luminescence thermometers. In recent years, there are few studies on the synthesis of such MOFs by introducing Ln(3+) ions of no luminescent properties such as Y3+. Herein, a novel Y/Eu co-doped Ln-MOF (Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA, H(4)NDPA = 5,5 '-naphthalene-1,4-diyl-diisophthalic acid) was synthesized via solvothermal methods, which showed good phase purity and thermal stability. Compared with EuNDPA, the Y3+ ions in Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA dilute the molar concentration of Eu3+, causing the emerge of ligand emission band. The luminescence intensity ratio of organic ligands and Eu3+ owns a good exponential dependence on temperature variation. As investigated, Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA owns the merits including a wide temperature sensing range (303-423 K), high relative sensitivity (3.04 %K-1 at 423 K), good spectral repeatability (>92 %) and distinct emission color change from red to blue. This novel Y(0.95)Eu(0.05)NDPA ratiometric thermometer is expected to promote the application and development of dual-emission MOF materials in the field of microelectronic temperature measurement.
A high sensitivity dual-mode optical thermometry based on charge compensation in ZnTiO3:M (M = Eu3+, Mn4+) hexagonal prisms

Abstract:Optical thermometer based on dual-mode fluorescence intensity ratiometric thermometry has been attracted more attention due to its higher sensitivity. In order to obtain optical thermal probe with high sensitivity, ZnTiO3 hexagonal prisms with hexagonal perovskite structure were fabricated by using self-assembly method, and Al3+ ions were introduced into the crystal lattices of ZnTiO3 doped with Eu3+/Mn4+ to improve the optical properties. The emission intensity assigned to Eu3+ was enhanced about twice with the charge compensation of Al3+ between Eu3+ and Ti3+. While the luminescence ratio between the thermal coupled level of Eu3+ revealed poor temperature dependence property. The emission assigned to 2Eg→4A2g (713 nm) transition of Mn4+ revealed an huge thermal quenching. Using the luminescence ratio between 5D0→7F2 (5D0→7F1) transition of Eu3+ to 2Eg→4A2g of Mn4+, the higher relative sensitivity of 2.7 %K-1was obtained. The charge compensation of Al3+ improved the coordination and reduced the relative sensitivity, Sr =1.85 %K-1. The results suggested the potential application in optical temperature probes for ZnTiO3: Mn4+,Eu3+ phosphor.
Multimode fluorescence intensity ratio thermometer based on synergistic luminescence from Eu3+ to Mn4+ of SrTiO3:Eu3+-ZnTiO3:Mn4+ nanocomposites

Abstract:SrTiO3:Eu3+-ZnTiO3:Mn4+ nanocomposites were successfully synthesized to obtain highly sensitive optical thermometers. The synthesized SrTiO3:Eu3+ was cubic perovskite structure, and the synthesized ZnTiO3:Mn4+ was cubic perovskite structure accompanying with hexagonal ilmenite structure. The results of X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectra suggested that the mixture of SrTiO3:Eu3+-ZnTiO3:Mn4+ nanophosphors had no obvious change in the structure after heat treatment at 800 °C. The photoluminescence intensity of Eu3+ in SrTiO3 phosphors revealed a stable temperature dependence, while that of Mn4+ in ZnTiO3 phosphors revealed a sharp temperature dependence. The emission band ranging from 650 nm to 800 nm were separated into two bands centered at 690 nm and 714 nm, which were assigned to 4T2g→4A2g and 2Eg→4A2g transitions of Mn4+ ions in cubic perovskite and hexagonal ilmenite ZnTiO3 matrix, respectively. The maximum relative sensitivity revealed a dependence on the molar ratio between SrTiO3 and ZnTiO3. The maximum value of 3.3 %K−1 was achieved for the composites with the molar ratio of 1:3 between SrTiO3:Eu3+ and ZnTiO3:Mn4+ nanophosphors, which was higher than that of the composites before heat treatment, 3.1 %K−1. The results suggested the potential application in optical temperature probes for the composites.

Abstract:A Mn2+‐doped Li4Zn(PO4)2:Mn2+ sample with dual‐band emission was successfully synthesized, revealing two distinct emissions originating from four‐coordinated Zn sites and six‐coordinated interstitial sites. Notably, as the temperature was varied, the luminescence centres demonstrated disparate temperature dependencies. Calculated based on fluorescence intensity ratio technology, the Sa and Sr values at 483 K were determined to be 1.69% K−1 and 0.12% K−1, respectively. An optical thermometry strategy based on Mn2+‐doped dual‐wavelength emission phosphor has been reported. Samples with different doping content were synthesized through a high‐temperature solid‐phase method under an air atmosphere. The electronic structure of Li4Zn(PO4)2 was calculated using density functional theory, revealing it to be a direct band gap material with an energy gap of 4.708 eV. Moreover, the emitting bands of Mn2+ at 530 and 640 nm can be simultaneously observed when using 417 nm as the exciting wavelength. This is due to the occupation of Mn2+ at the Zn2+ site and the interstitial site. Further analysis was conducted on the temperature‐dependent emission characteristics of the sample in the range 293–483 K. Mn2+ has different responses to temperature at different doping sites in Li4Zn(PO4)2. Based on the calculations using the fluorescence intensity ratio technique, the maximum relative sensitivity at a temperature of 483 K was determined to be 1.69% K−1, while the absolute sensitivity was found to be 0.12% K−1. The results showed that the Li4Zn(PO4)2:Mn2+ phosphor has potential application in optical thermometry.

Abstract:Herein, Ba2GdNbO6:Eu3+,Mn4+ phosphors with dual emission centers were manufactured as three-mode fluorescence thermometers. Their structure, micromorphology and luminescent properties were explained in-depth. Excited at 394 nm, the characteristic emission peaks of transitions of 5D0→7F of Eu3+ and 2Eg→4A2g of Mn4+ in Ba2GdNbO6:Eu3+,Mn4+ can be simultaneously detected. In addition, three-mode fluorescence thermometers with high sensitivity were developed, utilizing temperatures dependence of emission intensity (EI) of Mn4+, fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of Eu3+ and Mn4+, as well as fluorescence lifetime (FL) of 2Eg level of Mn4+. In EI, FIR and FL modes, the maximal relative sensitivities achieve 1.78 %K−1@423 K, 2.72 %K−1@483 K and 1.73 %K−1@430 K, respectively. The results indicate that Ba2GdNbO6:Eu3+,Mn4+ can be used as a candidate material for three-mode fluorescence thermometers.

Abstract:The Mn4+, Dy3+ co-doped La2MgTiO6 phosphors were synthesized by high-temperature solid-phase method. The crystal phase luminescence properties, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermal quenching of phosphors were analyzed. The emission spectra of the Mn4+, Dy3+ co-doped La2MgTiO6 phosphor were shown to exhibit two different emission peaks at 500–550 nm due to the 6H15/2 → 6P7/2 energy level jump of the Dy3+ ion and at 650–750 nm due to the spin-forbidden energy jump 2Eg → 4A2g of Mn4+. The influence of Mn4+, Dy3+ on temperature has different responses to achieve temperature sensing based on fluorescence intensity ratios, and the maximum relative sensitivity is 2.85

Abstract:A novel apatite-based UV-excited dual-emitting Ca2Na2La6(SiO4)(4)(PO4)(2)O: Eu2+/Eu3+ phosphor (CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+) was designed and successfully synthesized by a solid-state reaction. Compared with previous reports on this family of materials, a structural study based on DFT calculation exhibited a new consequence that the monovalent ions in this system are more inclined to occupy the seven-coordinate cationic sites rather than the nine-coordinate sites. This result was confirmed by the structural refinement and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) data. Due to the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+ dopants in the material, under 345 or 392nm excitation, CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ exhibited a green Eu2+ emission band (528nm) and red Eu3+ emission peaks (around 618nm). The application potential of CNL:0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ in luminescent thermometry was studied by exploiting the temperature sensitivity of the fluorescent intensity ratio (green/red) at different temperatures. It was found that, under 345nm excitation, the fluorescent intensity ratio of CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ displayed linear correlation over the temperature range of 298 to 473K with a high sensitivity of 2.82%K-1. Additionally, the emission color of the CNL: 0.02Eu(2+)/Eu3+ sample under UV lamp (254 and 365nm) excitation showed an obvious change (from green to red) as the temperature increased from 298 to 473K (from green to red). These results indicated that CNL: Eu2+/Eu3+ can serve as an excellent visual luminescent ratiometric thermometer. Furthermore, this work provides a novel reference for developing high-performance luminescence temperature-sensing materials.

Abstract:Compared with rare earth ions, transition metals have high temperature sensitivity, but the research on thermometry according to only using transition metals were not mentioned in phosphors. In this regard, a series of Mn2+:BaAl12O19–Mn4+:SrAl12O19 solid solutions were synthesized by high temperature solid phase method and researched. Although the sample is mixed phase, it can be synthesized in one step to avoid the defects in mixed phase preparation. The co-doping of Mn2+/Mn4+ is achieved by the self-reducing ability of BaAl12O19. It provides the possibility of thermometry doped Mn2+/Mn4+ based on the fluorescence intensity ratio. This material has excellent optical temperature sensing properties from 293 K to 406 K with good recyclability. Therefore, it is suitable for thermometry based on fluorescence intensity ratio with high maximum absolute (0.11 K−1 at 406 K) and relative sensitivity (4.37% K−1 at 293 K), obviously superior to the previously reported which are rare earth ions doped thermometry materials. Based on fluorescence lifetime of Mn4+, the maximum relative sensitivity is 4.48% K−1 at 353 K. The Mn2+/Mn4+ co-doped material is reported for the first time. The Mn2+:BaAl12O19–Mn4+:SrAl12O19 solid solutions have broad application prospect in the field of fluorescence thermometry, and the dual-mode thermometry makes it has excellent applicability in all aspects.

Abstract:Mixture of Mn4+-doped phosphor (Li2TiO3:Mn4+) and Dy3+-doped phosphor (Y2O3: Dy3+) were prepared and investigated for the application of optical thermometry. X-ray powder diffraction and luminescence spectroscopy measurements were performed on all samples to analysis their optical properties. In particular, temperature-dependent luminescence and fluorescence lifetime of the mixture sample were measured in the temperature range of 273-373 K. Further analysis showed that the mixture sample used for temperature sensing has an excellent relative sensitivity with maximum value of 4.34% K-1 at 288 K based on fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) and 6.67% K-1 at 339 K based on fluorescence lifetime, respectively. All these investigations suggest that the mixture phosphor is very promising in dual-mode high-sensitivity optical thermometry. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A series of La2MgTiO6: Mn4+ and La2MgTiO6: Mn4+, Eu3+ phosphors were prepared by high-temperature solid-phase method. The emission spectra of La2MgTiO6: Mn4+, Eu3+ phosphor samples under 328 nm excitation overlap with the absorbing regions of plant phytochromes PR and PFR in the far red and near infrared double wavelength range. The temperature-dependent and wavelength-dependent emission spectra show that the two distinguishable emission peaks of Eu3+ and Mn4+ exhibit clearly different temperature and wavelength re-sponses. Thus, dual-emission optical sensing based on changes in the fluorescence intensity ratio(FIR) of Mn4+ and Eu3+ ions, the relative sensitivity of wavelength detection in the range of 288-348 nm maxima is 8.13% nm-1 at 288 nm, and relative sensitivity of optical temperature sensing in the range of 298-498 K maxima is 2.09% K-1 at 498 K, In this study, La2MgTiO6: Mn4+, Eu3+ phosphor samples with very promising optical properties can provide the possibility of application in multiple fields.

Abstract:Luminescence thermometry has been widely concerned by researchers due to its quick response, high spatial resolution, and remote measurement. However, low sensitivity is still an existing problem and affects its development. Herein, the luminescence thermometer with high sensitivity taking advantage of the distinguished thermal response between Eu3+ and Mn4+ is designed. Excitedly, Eu3+ exhibits an anti-thermal quenching behavior under 310 nm excitation and a slight thermal quenching behavior under 393 nm excitation due to the energy transfer of host→Eu3+, while Mn4+ presents a strong thermal quenching behavior. Moreover, the energy transfer of Eu3+→Mn4+ (λex = 310 nm and λex = 393 nm) can also be observed for the Ca2Sb2O7: Eu3+, Mn4+ phosphors during the heating process. On the basis of the diverse thermal quenching behavior of Eu3+ and Mn4+, the thermometric performances are investigated by utilizing the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of Eu3+(5D0→7F2)/Mn4+(2Eg→4A2g) under a dual-wavelength excitation. The maximum relative sensitivities of the designed phosphors are determined to be 4.072% K−1 at 305 K under 310 nm and 3.072% K−1 at 351 K under 393 nm excitation. It's worth noting that the thermometric characteristic can be modified by various excitation wavelengths. Hence, the developed Ca2Sb2O7: Eu3+, Mn4+ phosphors have great potential in the field of luminescence thermometry and provide an effective strategy for designing high-sensitivity dual-wavelength excitation optical thermometers.

Abstract:Ratiometric fluorescent sensing materials based on dual-emissive luminescent centers have been widely researched due to their highly stable self-calibrating monitoring performance. In this work, Eu3+, Tb3+ co-doped gadolinium molybdate [Gd2(MoO4)3] phosphors were successfully prepared through a facile precipitation and a following heat treatment process. Dual-emissive Gd2(MoO4)3: Eu3+, Tb3+ phosphor showed characteristic emission peaks at 592, 617, and 703 nm corresponding to the transitions of 5D0–7F1, 5D0–7F2 and 5D0–7F4 for Eu3+ ions, and the other emissions at 488 and 543 nm were ascribed to 5D4–7F6 and 5D4–7F5 transitions for Tb3+, respectively. The temperature sensitivities of Gd2(MoO4)3: Eu3+, Tb3+ based on a multimode fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) technique were investigated for monitoring temperature changes in the range of 80–450 K. The maximum relative sensitivities of the four modes of FIR (ITb 3+/IEu 3+) techniques were successfully achieved with range of 0.37–0.50% K−1. The results also demonstrated the high reversibility of Gd2(MoO4)3: Eu3+, Tb3+ phosphor used as a self-calibrating thermometer for thermal-sensing application.

Abstract:We have co-doped Mn4+ and Dy3+ into a perovskite structure host BaLaMgNbO6 (BLMN) in order to develop a new scheme of dual-mode optical thermometry. All the samples including single-doped and co-doped samples were successfully synthesized via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The phase purity and luminescence properties of the phosphors were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra. In particular, temperature-dependent emission spectra as well as luminescence decay curves measurements were performed on the co-doped BLMN:Mn4+, Dy3+ sample to inspect its temperature-dependent luminescence properties. Under 355 nm excitation, the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between Dy3+ emission at 580 nm (F-4(9/2) -> H-6(13/2)) and Mn4+ emission at 698 nm (E-2(g) ->(4)A(2g)) as well as the fluorescence lifetime of Mn4+ (E-2(g) -> (4)A(2g)) were investigated in the temperature range from 230 K to 470 K, and the maximum relative sensitivities are 1.82% K-1 at 457 K and 2.43% K-1 at 437 K, respectively. It should be noted that the emission peak of Mn4+ whose luminescence can be employed by lifetime-mode temperature sensing is located in the optical window of biological tissue, which could be used in biological application. All these investigations suggest that the BLMN:Mn4+, Dy3+ phosphor is very promising in dual-mode high-sensitivity optical thermometry.
Eu3+-doped manganese tungstate for multiparametric and colorimetric luminescence thermometry

Abstract:Improvement of luminescent thermometers requires not only the search for high-sensitivity thermometric outputs, but also availability of multiple thermometric parameters affording a combined and reliable response. We hereby detail for the first time the luminescence of Eu3+ in manganese tungstate (Eu3+:MnWO4) solids obtained by coprecipitation under ultraviolet excitation and how this material provided an optical thermometric response from 77 K to 373 K via excitation and emission spectra. Processing of up to five thermometric parameters, namely bandwidths, band positions, band shifts and luminescence intensity ratios, resulted in relative thermal sensitivities as high as 1.56% K−1 and temperature uncertainties between 0.01 and 2 K depending on the choice of the spectral parameter. In addition, we demonstrate that Eu3+:MnWO4 also act as a qualitative colorimetric thermosensor because of progressive change of emission color to greenish-yellow to bluish-green upon heating under UV excitation. Therefore, our results show that the combination of broadband tungstate emissions with the 4f-4f narrow emissions of Eu3+ is an effective approach to achieve a multiparametric luminescent thermal response via emission, excitation and visual observation, which makes Eu3+:MnWO4 a promising candidate for advanced thermometry applications.

Abstract:Mn4+ and Tb3+ singly doped and Mn4+/Tb3+ codoped lutetium aluminum garnet (Lu3Al5O12, or simply LuAG) phosphors were synthesized and investigated for the application of optical thermometry. X-ray powder diffraction and luminescence spectroscopy measurements were performed on all samples to analyze their crystal phases and optical properties. In particular, temperature-dependent luminescence of the LuAG:Mn4+/Tb3+ sample was measured at the temperature range of 270-420 K. The results showed that the luminescence intensity of Mn4+ has gone through a remarkable decline while the luminescence of Tb3+ has an only insignificant change with the rise of temperature which leads to a dramatic decrease in the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between the two activator Mn4+ and Tb3+. Further analysis showed that the LuAG:Mn4+/Tb3+ sample used for temperature sensing has a high relative sensitivity with maximum value of 4.3% K-1 at 333 K. Our research indicated that this LuAG:Mn4+/Tb3+ material is a promising candidate for FIR-type optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:Orthorhombic ZrTiO4 is an attractive dielectric material; its optical properties are, however, less known. In this paper, we reported on the microstructure and luminescence studies of pristine ZrTiO4 and Eu3+-doped ZrTiO4 phosphors. The results indicated that two types of TiO6 octahedra, the isolated/ localized and coupled/delocalized, coexisted in host matrix. Eu3+ doping could induce oxygen vacancy defect states located below the bottom of the conduction band. Pristine ZrTiO4 showed bright yellow luminescence via STEs recombination at defects sites at low temperatures, but significant thermal quenching occurred due to STEs migration to quenching centers at elevated temperatures. Effective host sensitized energy transfer to Eu3+ was observed in ZrTiO4:Eu3+ phosphors and yielded the red characteristic emissions of Eu3+. Anomalous STEs luminescence enhancement and spectral blue-shift in the excitation spectra with higher Eu3 + concentration appeared and were explained by considering three factors: competitive absorption between electron transitions from the top of the valence band to the defect states and host conduction band, Eu3+ doping driving the production of more isolated TiO6 octahedra, and energy back-transfer from Eu3+ activators to other titanate groups. On the basis of the dual-emitting combination strategy involving host STEs and Eu3+ luminescence, ZrTiO4:Eu3+ phosphors were demonstrated to be ratiometric self-referencing optical thermometric materials, with a working range of 153–313 K and a maxima of relative sensitivity to ~1.1% K−1 at 243 K.
Luminescence and Energy Transfer performances of Tb3+/Mn4+ co-doped Sr2LuTaO6 double perovskite phosphors for high sensitive optical thermometer

Abstract:A series of Tb3+/Mn4+ codoped double perovskite oxides Sr2LuTaO6(SLT) phosphors are synthesized with solid-state method. The results of structure characterization prove that the Tb3+ and Mn4+ ions are successfully doped into the SLT host. The photoluminescence excitation(PLE) and photoluminescence(PL) spectra of SLT:Tb3+, SLT:Mn4+ and SLT:Tb3+/Mn4+ are illustrated in detail. Under ultraviolet(UV) excitation, the bright green and red lights are obtained from SLT:Tb3+/Mn4+ phosphor. Especially, the emission intensity of Tb3+ ions in SLT:Tb3+/Mn4+ is enhanced by the energy transfer(ET) process from Mn4+ to Tb3+. The thermal enhancement of Tb3+ ion radiation in SLT:Tb3+/Mn4+ also proves the ET process(Mn4+→Tb3+). In addition, the thermal enhancement of Tb3+ ion radiation and the thermal quenching of Mn4+ ion radiation in SLT:Tb3+/Mn4+ system can be applied to develop optical thermometry based on the luminescence intensity ratio(LIR) technology. Therefore, the LIRs of Mn4+ (2Eg→4A2g) and Tb3+(5D4→7F5,4) are investigated at the temperature range from 313 to 573 K. The absolute sensitivity (Sa) and relative sensitivity (Sr) of SLT:Tb3+/Mn4+ phosphor are calculated. The maximum values of Sa and Sr are obtained from the LIR of Tb3+:5D4→7F4 (570-599 nm) and Mn4+:2Eg→4A2g(625-705 nm). The maximum of Sa is 10.18% K−1 at 543 K, and that of Sr reaches 1.98% K−1 at 543 K. The result confirms that the ET process from Mn4+ to Tb3+ contribute to increase the temperature measuring sensitivity of SLT:Tb3+/Mn4+ phosphor. Therefore, the SLT: Mn4+/Tb3+ phosphor has prospective potential in optical thermometry and provide advantageous guidance for designing high-sensitivity optical thermometers.

Abstract:Recently, much attention has been paid to Mn4+-doped phosphors due to their strong deep-red emissions which are in demand in white light-emitting diodes. However, a key challenge for the commercialization of Mn4+-doped phosphors is their low thermal stability caused by the thermal quenching of Mn4+ luminescence. Herein, a strategy of optical temperature sensing has been developed by specifically utilizing thermal quenching to explore the potential applications of Mn4+-doped phosphors in optical temperature sensing. In this work, we report two kinds of double perovskite type phosphors, Ba2LaNbO6 (BLN) and Ca2LaNbO6 (CLN), co-doped with Mn4+ and Eu3+. Through the study of temperature-dependent spectra in a large temperature range of 298-498 K, Mn4+ and Eu3+ yield different trends where the fluorescence intensity of Mn4+ ions decreases much more rapidly compared to that of Eu3+ ions as the temperature increases. Accordingly, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the luminescence of Mn4+ and Eu3+, the optimal relative sensitivity of temperature sensing in the BLN and CLN matrices could reach 2.08% K-1 and 1.51% K-1, respectively. Finally, the application potential of Mn4+-doped phosphors in temperature sensing is confirmed by analyzing different temperature sensing results in the two matrices.
Influence of Mn2+ ions on the structure, spectral characteristics and optical thermometry performances of ZnAl2O4:Cr3+ multifunctional phosphors

Abstract:Cr3+/Mn2+ co-doped ZnAl2O4 phosphors with normal spinel structure were successfully synthesized by using the common sol-gel method. The crystal structure was characterized by XRD, confirming the single spinel phase even 30 mol% Mn2+ doping in ZnAl2O4 lattices. The Mn2+ ions caused the cations in spinel lattices deviating from the equilibrium position, which furtherly resulted in the higher spinel inversion rate. But it revealed a positive effect on the luminescence of ZnAl2O4:Cr3+. The energy transfer from Mn2+ to Cr3+ in the ZnAl2O4 phosphors was confirmed. With Mn2+ doping in ZnAl2O4 lattices, the emission peaks at 685 nm (R3 line) and 689 nm (R2 line) revealed an obvious increase until the concentration of Mn2+ increased up to 18 mol%. While the emission at 687 nm (R1 line) became weaker comparing with the emissions at 685 nm and 689 nm. The position, line width and the intensity of R-line revealed an obvious temperature dependence (80–100 K). The thermometer based on the fluorescence intensity ratio of Cr3+ was proposed, and the absolute (Sa) and relative sensitivity (Sr) were calculated, respectively, which values revealed an obvious dependence on the concentration of Mn2+ ions. 0.25 %K−1 of Sr was obtained with Mn2+ ions dopant, which was twice than that without Mn2+ ions dopants at 310 K, indicating its potential application in the optical thermometry.

Abstract:A novel optical thermometry strategy based on different temperature response from two sites environment of Mn2+ in K7ZnSc2B15O30:Mn2+ had been reported. The color tunable Mn2+ doped K7ZnSc2B15O30 luminescence materials were successfully prepared, and the photoluminescence properties were studied. Using density functional theory, the electronic structure was estimated. The calculated result showed that K7ZnSc2B15O30 was a direct-band gap material with the energy gap of 4.22 eV. Upon the excitation of UV light, the photoluminescence spectra of K7ZnSc2B15O30:Mn2+ phosphors demonstrated two emission bands centered at 584 nm and 675 nm attributed to the substitution of Zn2+ and Sc3+ sites with Mn2+ respectively. Depending on the concentration of Mn2+, the emitting color can be tunable from yellow to red in the Mn2+ doped single-phase phosphors. The temperature-dependent luminescence properties of K7ZnSc2B15O30:Mn2+ was anlysized range from 300 K to 520 K. The results indicated that the thermal quenching properties of Mn2+ at the two kinds of lattice sites are different. When Mn2+ occupied the position of Sc3+, the luminescence intensity decreased significantly with the increasing of temperature, on the contrary, when Mn2+ occupied the position of Zn2+, the luminescence intensity decreased slightly with the rise of temperature. This situation caused a significant change in the fluorescence intensity ratio of the two emission bands. Further study showed that the typical phosphor had a high relative and absolute sensitivity respectively with maximum value of 1.84% K−1 and 0.0311 K−1 at 520 K, and the temperature resolution is about 0.8 K. These results indicated that the single Mn2+ doped K7ZnSc2B15O30 materials showed a potential application for optical thermometry.
