Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), that are widely used in different industrial and commercial activities, have become emerging contaminants of concern. Thus, the evaluation of PFAS presence in diverse environmental matrices is of paramount importance, leading to the necessity in development of different types of analytical methods to analyse the trace amounts of PFAS with varying selectivity and sensitivity. Analytical methods that have been advanced and employed for PFAS identification are critically described with their strengths, limitations and future potentials in this review. This review includes, (i) instrument analytical methodologies, mainly focusing on sample preparation, extraction and recovery analysis, (ii) nanoparticle-based sensors, and an app-based smartphone portable sensor, for the monitoring and sensing of PFAS in different environmental matrices. Furthermore, (iii) total oxidisable precursor assay (TOPA), content of total organic fluorine (TOF) as well as total fluorine (TF) are also reviewed, which provide fundamental tools towards achieving precursor quantification and closing mass balance analysis. Abstract:<p>Here we synthesize current understanding of the magnitudes and methods for assessing human and wildlife exposures to poly‐ and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Most human exposure assessments have focused on two to five legacy PFAS and wildlife assessments are typically limited to targeted PFAS (up to ~30 substances). However, shifts in chemical production are occurring rapidly and targeted methods for detecting PFAS have not kept pace with these changes. Total fluorine (TF) measurements complemented by suspect screening using high resolution mass spectrometry are thus emerging as essential tools for PFAS exposure assessment. Such methods enable researchers to better understand contributions from precursor compounds that degrade into terminal perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA). Available data suggest that diet is the major human exposure pathway for some PFAS but there is large variability across populations and PFAS compounds. Additional data on TF in exposure media and the fraction of unidentified organofluorine are needed. Drinking water has been established as the major exposure source in contaminated communities. As water supplies are remediated, and for the general population, exposures from dust, personal care products, indoor environments and other sources may be more important. A major challenge for exposure assessments is the lack of statistically representative population surveys. For wildlife, bioaccumulation processes differ substantially between PFAS and neutral lipophilic organic compounds, prompting a revaluation of traditional bioaccumulation metrics. There is evidence that both phospholipids and proteins are important for the tissue partitioning and accumulation of PFAS. New mechanistic models for PFAS bioaccumulation are being developed that will assist in wildlife risk evaluations.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.</p>

A targeted and non-targeted discovery screening approach for poly-and per-fluoroalkyl substances in model environmental biota samples

Abstract:A comprehensive analytical approach for targeted and non-targeted discovery screening of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) was developed and applied to model complex environmental biotic samples. Samples were extracted by formic acid-acetonitrile solution and cleaned up and fractionated by SPE (WAX). Target PFAS quantification was performed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (UPLC-QqQ-MS/MS). Non-targeted analysis (NTA) PFAS screening was performed with UPLC coupled with a quadrupole-Exactive orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometer (UPLC-Q-Exactive-HRMS). An iterative exclusion (IE) approach was applied to data acquisition for NTA suspect screening to increase the potential for unknown PFAS discovery with MS/MS. A complex workflow in Compound Discoverer was set up to automate data processing of the PFAS suspects search. New mass lists and MS/MS databases, which included a large number of PFAS, were set up and introduced into the search for high-throughput structure identification using HRMS techniques. The integrated targeted-NTA method successfully analyzed for legacy and alternative PFAS in model environmental biota samples, namely polar bear liver and bird egg samples. Targeted analysis provided unequivocal identification of well known/established PFAS (mainly perfluoroalkyl acids) with quantification at very low levels. The NTA suspect screening was able to determine a broader range of PFAS. The data analysis method offered high-confidence annotations for PFAS despite lacking available authentic standards. Overall, the analytical coverage of PFAS was greater and elucidated other PFAS present in these model apex predators.
Assessing Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Fish Fillet Using Non-Targeted Analyses

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of thousands of man-made chemicals that are persistent and highly stable in the environment. Fish consumption has been identified as a key route of PFAS exposure for humans. However, routine fish monitoring targets only a handful of PFAS, and non-targeted analyses have largely only evaluated fish from heavily PFAS-impacted waters. Here, we evaluated PFAS in fish fillets from recreational and drinking water sources in central North Carolina to assess whether PFAS are present in these fillets that would not be detected by conventional targeted methods. We used liquid chromatography, ion mobility spectrometry, and mass spectrometry (LC-IMS-MS) to collect full scan feature data, performed suspect screening using an in-house library of 100 PFAS for high confidence feature identification, searched for additional PFAS features using non-targeted data analyses, and quantified perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) in the fillet samples. A total of 36 PFAS were detected in the fish fillets, including 19 that would not be detected using common targeted methods, with a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 22 in individual fish. Median fillet PFOS levels were concerningly high at 11.6 to 42.3 ppb, and no significant correlation between PFOS levels and number of PFAS per fish was observed. Future PFAS monitoring in this region should target more of these 36 PFAS, and other regions not considered heavily PFAS contaminated should consider incorporating non-targeted analyses into ongoing fish monitoring studies.

A Sensitive Method for Simultaneous Determination of 12 Classes of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (pfass) in Groundwater by Ultrahigh Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled with Quadrupole Orbitrap High Resolution Mass Spectrometry.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) comprise a large group of chemicals with diverse physicochemical properties, which make their simultaneous determination a challenging task. A trace analytical method based on ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-Orbitrap HRMS) was developed for simultaneous determination of 54 PFASs belonging to 12 classes in groundwater, including 24 perfluorocarbons and 30 precursors. This method provided good linearity of calibration standards (R-2 > 0.99), excellent method limits of quantification (MLOQs) (0.5-250 pg/L), satisfactory matrix spiking recoveries (63%-148%), high precision (intra-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) 1.4-11.4%, inter-day RSDs 1.6-12.9%, and inter-week RSDs 2.1-12.7%), and short runtime (13 min), suitable for high throughput studies. The newly established method was successfully applied to detect PFASs in the groundwater samples collected from Hebei Province, China. Twenty PFASs were detected with the total concentration of 0.3-32.9 ng/L, indicating the contamination level similar to that in drinking water. The dominant PFASs were perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). In addition, 6:2 fluorotelomer phosphate diester (6:2 diPAP) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) were found as the major precursors. The total PFAS concentrations were lower than the cumulative permissible limit of 70 ng/L for PFOS and PFOA recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) for drinking water in 2016. In a nutshell, this study provided a fast and sensitive method based on HRMS for the simultaneous analysis of a wide range of PFASs, present at trace levels in groundwater samples. Spatial and temporal variability of perfluoroalkyl substances in the Laurentian Great Lakes

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of fluorinated organic chemicals that have been used in industrial and consumer applications since the 1950s. PFAS are resistant to chemical and biological degradation and are ubiquitous in the environment, including in water, sediment, and biota in the Laurentian Great Lakes. This critical review evaluates the spatial and temporal variability of commonly studied perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) and perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs) in the Great Lakes by synthesizing data collected in water, surface sediment, sediment cores, lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), and herring gull (Larus argentatus) eggs. The lowest PFAS concentrations in all matrices are detected in Lake Superior, which is located in the most pristine region of the Great Lakes Basin. In contrast, higher concentrations are observed in Lakes Erie and Ontario, which are more impacted by industrial activity and wastewater discharge. The distribution of individual PFAS compounds also varies across the lakes in response to changes in PFAS sources, with higher proportions of PFSAs in the eastern lakes. Sediment and biota are enriched in long chain PFSAs and PFCAs relative to concentrations in the water column, as expected based on predicted partitioning behavior. Sediment cores and bioarchives consistently demonstrate that PFAS concentrations increased in the Great Lakes from the initial time points until the early 2000s. The available data indicate that PFOS and PFOA concentrations decline after this period in the upper Great Lakes, but are stable in Lake Ontario. However, these trends depend on the lake, the individual compound, and the organism considered.
Disclosing the bioaccumulation and biomagnification behaviors of emerging per/polyfluoroalkyl substances in aquatic food web based on field investigation and model simulation

Abstract:Emerging poly/perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have been widely detected in the environment, but their bioaccumulation and biomagnification behaviors are not well understood. We collected surface water, sediment, and various aquatic organisms from Lake Taihu, China. Several emerging PFASs, such as fluorotelomer sulfonates (FTSs), hexafluoropropylene oxides (HFPOs), and chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acids (Cl-PFESAs) were frequently detected in water and sediment samples. The concentrations of HFPO trimer acid (HFPO-TA), 4,8-dioxa-3 H-per-fluorononanoate, and FTSs were remarkably higher than those reported previously, indicating that their application is increasing in Taihu Basin. These emerging PFASs displayed higher sediment/water partitioning coefficients (log K oc ) than the corresponding perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) with the same perfluorinated carbon chain length. HFPOs and Cl-PFESAs were more labile to deposit in fish livers than perfluorooctanoic and perfluorooctane sulfonic acids, respectively. Both field investigations and model simulations indicated that HFPO-TA and Cl-PFESAs, as well as the hydrogen-substituted analogs of 6:2 Cl-PFESA (6:2 H-PFESA), were biomagnified along the aquatic food chain. The bioaccumulation model simulation revealed that the accumulation of these emerging PFASs in fish was mainly through dietary intake, whereas gill respiration and fecal excretion facilitated their elimination. Metabolic transformation might also contribute to their elimination relative to the legacy ones.

Fast analysis of short-chain and ultra-short-chain fluorinated organics in water by on-line extraction coupled to HPLC-HRMS

Abstract:A rapid on-line solid-phase extraction liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (on-line SPE-LC-HRMS) method was developed to analyze 11 ultra-short and short-chain PFAS in surface water. Analytical optimization involved screening 7 chromatographic columns and 5 on-line SPE columns, as well as evaluating SPE loading conditions, filters, sample acidification, chromatographic mobile phases, and SPE loading mobile phases. The optimized method was then applied to 44 river water samples collected in Eastern Canada, including sites near airports with fire-training areas. Among the 11 targeted PFAS, the most frequently detected were trifluoroacetic acid (TFA, 4.6-220 ng/L), perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA, 0.85-33 ng/L), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA, 1.2-2100 ng/L), trifluoromethane sulfonic acid (TMS, 0.01-4.3 ng/L), and perfluorobutane sulfonic acid (PFBS, 0.07-450 ng/L). Levels of C3-C5 perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), C2-C4 perfluoroalkyl sulfonates (PFSAs) and n:3 polyfluoroalkyl acids (n = 2,3; n:3 acids) were significantly higher in water bodies near fire-training area sites compared with rivers in urban areas. In contrast, TFA, TMS, and 1:3 acid were not significantly elevated, likely reflecting atmospheric deposition or other diffuse sources for these compounds. Nontarget and suspect screening analysis revealed an abundance of other ultra-short and short-chain PFAS in AFFF-impacted water bodies. Perfluoroalkyl sulfonamides (FASA, C2, C3, and C5), perfluoroalkyl sulfonamide propanoic acids (FASA-PrA, C1-C2) and n:3 acids (n = 1, 4, and 5) were detected for the first time in environmental surface waters.

Abstract:Though thousands of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been on the global market, most research focused on only a small fraction, potentially resulting in underestimated environmental risks. Here, we used complementary target, suspect, and nontarget screening for quantifying and identifying the target and nontarget PFAS, respectively, and developed a risk model considering their specific properties to prioritize the PFAS in surface waters. Thirty-three PFAS were identified in surface water in the Chaobai river, Beijing. The suspect and nontarget screening by Orbitrap displayed a sensitivity of > 77%, indicating its good performance in identifying the PFAS in samples. We used triple quadrupole (QqQ) under multiple-reaction monitoring for quantifying PFAS with authentic standards due to its potentially high sensitivity. To quantify the nontarget PFAS without authentic standards, we trained a random forest regression model which presented the differences up to only 2.7 times between measured and predicted response factors (RFs). The maximum/minimum RF in each PFAS class was as high as 1.2-10.0 in Orbitrap and 1.7-22.3 in QqQ. A risk-based prioritization approach was developed to rank the identified PFAS, and four PFAS (i.e., perfluorooctanoic acid, hydrogenated perfluorohexanoic acid, bistriflimide, 6:2 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid) were flagged with high priority (risk index > 0.1) for remediation and management. Our study highlighted the importance of a quantification strategy during environmental scrutiny of PFAS, especially for nontarget PFAS without standards.
Occurrence and source apportionment of novel and legacy poly/perfluoroalkyl substances in Hai River basin in China using receptor models and isomeric fingerprints

Abstract:A variety of fluorinated alternatives are being manufactured and applied as a consequence of stringent regulations on legacy poly/perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). In this study, 26 emerging and legacy PFASs were measured in the surface water (including dissolved phase and suspended particulate matter) and sediments taken from Hai River basin, China. The total concentrations of PFASs (∑PFASs) ranged from 1.74 to 172 ng/L, with perfluorooctanonate (PFOA) as the dominant compound (15.2% of the ∑PFASs, median value). Emerging PFASs, such as dimer acid of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA) and trimer acid (HFPO-TA), were widely detected in the water samples. Specifically, chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (F-53B) was observed to be predominant in some sediment samples. A receptor model, Unmix, was introduced to identify the sources of PFASs in the surface water, and the results indicated that fire-fighting foam/fluoropolymer processing aids (36.6%) were the dominant source. The field-based sediment-water (organic carbon normalized) coefficients, Koc, were correlated to the carbon chain lengths of the PFASs. A technique coupling one-way analysis of variance with chemical mass balance model was developed to trace the manufacturing sources of PFOA. Electrochemical fluorination (ECF) was the major PFOA manufacturing source with considerable contribution by telomerization. For the first time, the isomers of perfluorooctane sulfonamide (PFOSA) were quantified in the environmental samples. The lower proportion of branched (br-) PFOSA isomers and higher percentage of br-perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) isomers in the water samples relative to their corresponding commercial products, provided more direct evidences that br-PFOSA isomers were biotransformed more easily than n-PFOSA, explaining the observed enrichment of br-PFOS in the aquatic environment.
Rapid Determination of 12 Classes of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in Water Samples from Environmental Forensic Cases

Abstract:The widespread use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) with different physico-chemical properties poses a great threat to the environment and human health. Simultaneous detection of different classes of PFASs is a difficult task, especially for rapid analysis of polluted water samples in environmental forensic cases. In this study, a simple sample preparation ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry was established for the detection of PFASs in a wide range of water matrices. By optimizing the conditions of pretreatment and the parameters of the instrument, the developed method provided good linearity of calibration standards (R2 > 0.99), and demonstrated excellent MLOQ (0.008-1.2 µg/L), with spiked recoveries ranging from 57.7% to 151% for 47 targets in surface water samples, and from 45.7 to 165% for 46 targets in ground and waste water samples, respectively. This method required an injection volume of 3 µL and an analysis time of only 18 min per sample. The validation method was successfully applied to the analysis of 20 environmental water samples, in which 15 target substances with different concentrations were detected, with total concentrations of 0.082 to 262.455 μg/L. The method is simple and exclusive, and can rapidly confirm the occurrence of PFASs in different water samples, providing a convenient and fast high-throughput analysis, which is especially suitable for the application in the environmental forensic investigation of PFASs pollution.
Simultaneous and High-Throughput Analytical Strategy of 30 Fluorinated Emerging Pollutants Using UHPLC-MS/MS in the Shrimp Aquaculture System

Abstract:This study established novel and high-throughput strategies for the simultaneous analysis of 30 fluorinated emerging pollutants in different matrices from the shrimp aquaculture system in eastern China using UHPLC-MS/MS. The parameters of SPE for analysis of water samples and of QuEChERS methods for sediment and shrimp samples were optimized to allow the simultaneous detection and quantitation of 17 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and 13 fluoroquinolones (FQs). Under the optimal conditions, the limits of detection of 30 pollutants for water, sediment, and shrimp samples were 0.01–0.30 ng/L, 0.01–0.22 μg/kg, and 0.01–0.23 μg/kg, respectively, while the limits of quantification were 0.04–1.00 ng/L, 0.03–0.73 μg/kg, and 0.03–0.76 μg/kg, with satisfactory recoveries and intra-day precision. The developed methods were successfully applied to the analysis of multiple samples collected from aquaculture ponds in eastern China. PFASs were detected in all samples with concentration ranges of 0.18–0.77 μg/L in water, 0.13–1.41 μg/kg (dry weight) in sediment, and 0.09–0.96 μg/kg (wet weight) in shrimp, respectively. Only two FQs, ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin, were found in the sediment and shrimp. In general, this study provides valuable insights into the prevalence of fluorinated emerging contaminants, assisting in the monitoring and control of emerging contaminants in aquatic foods.

Abstract:To date, poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) represent a real threat for their environmental persistence, wide physicochemical variability, and their potential toxicity. Thus far a large portion of these chemicals remain structurally unknown. These chemicals, therefore, require the implementation of complex non-targeted analysis workflows using liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) for their comprehensive detection and monitoring. This approach, even though comprehensive, does not always provide the much-needed analytical resolution for the analysis of complex PFAS mixtures such as fire-fighting aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs). This study consolidates the advantages of the LC×LC technique hyphenated with high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry (HRMS/MS) for the identification of PFAS in AFFF mixtures. A total of 57 PFAS homolog series (HS) were identified in 3M and Orchidee AFFF mixtures thanks to the (i) high chromatographic peak capacity ( n' 2D,c ~ 300) and the (i) increased mass domain resolution provided by the "remainder of Kendrick Mass" (RKM) analysis on the HRMS data. Then, we attempted to annotate the PFAS of each HS by exploiting the available reference standards and the FluoroMatch workflow in combination with the RKM defect by different fluorine repeating units, such as CF 2 , CF 2 O, and C 2 F 4 O. This approach resulted in 12 identified PFAS HS, including compounds belonging to the HS of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFACAs), perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids (PFASAs), (N-pentafluoro(5)sulfide)-perfluoroalkane sulfonates (SF5-PFASAs), N -sulfopropyldimethylammoniopropyl perfluoroalkane sulfonamides (N-SPAmP-FASA), and N -carboxymethyldimethylammoniopropyl perfluoroalkane sulfonamide (N-CMAmP-FASA). A novel approach based on supramolecular solvents microextraction for quick detection of perfluoroalkyl acids and their precursors in aquatic food

Abstract:Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have garnered significant attention owing to their prevalence and adverse effects on humans. The direct dietary intake of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) and PFAAs precursors (pre-PFAAs) biotransformation are considered major contributors to human exposure to PFASs. However, little information is available on analytical methods for the simultaneous detection of PFAAs and pre-PFAAs. In the present study, a single-step sample-treatment-based supramolecular solvents-dispersed liquid-liquid microextraction (SUPRASs-DLLME) technique was established for the analysis of 16 PFAAs and 7 pre-PFAAs in aquatic food. SUPRASs were synthesized using 1-heptanol (3 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (4 mL), which were self-assembled in water. The parameters for microextraction, such as extraction method and enrichment capacity, were optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were 0.03-0.15 ng·g-1 and 0.1-0.5 ng·g-1, respectively. Good linearities (R2 > 0.996) were obtained for all the target compounds, and the recoveries ranged 81.1-120 % with relative standard deviations (RSDs) lower than 20 %. This method was applied to the analysis of 16 PFAAs and 7 pre-PFAAs in aquatic food samples (crabs, prawns, and fish). This study provides a new idea for analyzing other pollutants in biological samples.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse class of fluorinated anthropogenic chemicals that include perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAA), which are widely used in modern commerce. Many products and environmental samples contain abundant precursors that can degrade into terminal PFAA associated with adverse health effects. Fish consumption is an important dietary exposure source for PFAS that bioaccumulate in food webs. However, little is known about bioaccumulation of PFAA precursors. Here, we identify and quantify PFAS in recreational fish species collected from surface waters across New Hampshire, US, using a toolbox of analytical methods. Targeted analysis of paired water and tissue samples suggests that many precursors below detection in water have a higher bioaccumulation potential than their terminal PFAA. Perfluorobutane sulfonamide (FBSA), a short-chain precursor produced by electrochemical fluorination, was detected in all fish samples analyzed for this compound. The total oxidizable precursor assay interpreted using Bayesian inference revealed fish muscle tissue contained additional, short-chain precursors in high concentration samples. Suspect screening analysis indicated these were perfluoroalkyl sulfonamide precursors with three and five perfluorinated carbons. Fish consumption advisories are primarily being developed for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), but this work reinforces the need for risk evaluations to consider additional bioaccumulative PFAS, including perfluoroalkyl sulfonamide precursors.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have caused widespread environmental concern in recent years. Among them, the levels of perfluoroalkane sulfonyl fluorides (PFASFs) in the environment have rarely been reported due to the lack of sensitive analytical methods. Herein, a novel liquid chromatography-microwave plasma torch ionization-mass spectrometry (LC-MPTI-MS) technique was designed for the direct analysis of PFASFs in the environment. The collaborative action of reactive oxygen species (such as hydroxyl radicals) and the elevated temperature within the ambient MPTI environment results in the replacement of the fluorine atom in sulfonyl fluoride by oxygen, leading to the detection of perfluoroalkanesulfonic acid (PFSA) ions by MS. Concurrently, LC was employed to separate other PFSAs that are present in the environment. Three PFASFs exhibited good linearity within the range of 1-500 mu g/L with R-2 > 0.994. The limit of detections (LODs) and the limit of quantifications (LOQs) were measured at 39.32-87.87 and 131.07-292.90 ng/L, respectively. The method was utilized for the direct detection of spiked perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF) in wastewater with recoveries of 77.16 to 124.81%. Our approach circumvents the laborious process of chemical derivatization and is anticipated to serve as a robust tool for determining the levels and behaviors of PFASFs in the environment.

Abstract:High-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS)-based suspect and nontarget screening techniques are powerful tools for the comprehensive identification of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), but the interference of complex matrices (especially for wastewater) pose an analytical challenge. This study explored the potential of combining ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) with HRMS and machine learning techniques to achieve the rapid and accurate suspect and nontarget screening of PFAS in wastewater. There were fewer interfering peaks and a clearer spectrum in the data acquired by IMS-HRMS than conventional HRMS. The introduction of collision cross section (CCS) in PFAS homologous series search could filter out 63% of false positive results. Retention time and CCS prediction models were helpful in improving the confidence for PFAS qualitative identification and the random forest algorithm combined with RDKit descriptor performed best for CCS prediction. With the inclusion of extra dimensional information, this study also proposed a comprehensive and concise confidence assignment criterion to better convey the certainty of the qualitative identification of PFAS. Finally, a total of 56 potential PFASs were identified in the wastewater sample using the newly developed method and 45 of them were identified outside reference standards, emphasizing the importance of suspect and nontarget screening for PFAS.

Abstract:According to traditional neurophysiological theory, consciousness requires neocortical functioning, and children born without cerebral hemispheres necessarily remain indefinitely in a developmental vegetative state. Four children between 5 and 17 years old are reported with congenital brain malformations involving total or near‐total absence of cerebral cortex but who, nevertheless, possessed discriminative awareness: for example, distinguishing familiar from unfamiliar people and environments, social interaction, functional vision, orienting, musical preferences, appropriate affective responses, and associative learning. These abilities may reflect‘vertical’plasticity of brainstem and diencephalic structures. The relative rarity of manifest consciousness in congenitally decorticate children could be due largely to an inherent tendency of the label‘developmental vegetative state’to become a self‐fulfilling prophecy.
