Abstract:Chlorine-incorporating ultraviolet (UV) provides a multiple barrier for drinking water disinfection. Meanwhile, post-UV employment can promote the degradation of micropollutants by radical production from chlorine residual photolysis. This work studied the degradation of one such chemical, tonalide (AHTN), by low-pressure UV-activated free chlorine (FC) under typical UV disinfection dosage of < 200 mJ.cm(-2) and water matrix of filtered tank effluent. AHTN was rapidly degraded by UV/FC in accordance with pseudo-first-order kinetics. The reaction rate constants of AHTN with reactive chlorine species and hydroxyl radical (HO center dot) were estimated. Mechanistic exploration evidenced that under UV/FC, AHTN degradation was attributable to direct photolysis, ClO center dot, and HO center dot. The carbonyl side chain of AHTN served as an important attack site for radicals. Water matrices, such as natural organic matter (NOM), HCO3-, Cu2+, PO43-, and Fe2+, showed noticeable influence on the UV/FC process with an order of NOM > HCO3- > Cu2+ > PO43- > Fe2+. Reaction product analysis showed ignorable formation of chlorinated intermediates and disinfection byproducts.

Abstract:Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the frequency and characteristics of macular lesions observed in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) uveitis, using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 38 consecutive patients were recruited from a tertiary referral center in uveitis. All eyes with JIA uveitis underwent complete ophthalmic examination including OCT 3. Exclusion criterion was the inability to obtain OCT scans. Flare and visual acuity were also analysed by using linear regression. Results: We analysed foveal thickness (FT) and central foveal thickness (CFT), using software mapping, to describe macular lesions in 61 eyes. Maculopathy was observed in 51 eyes (84%) compared with 12% in the literature (p<0.0001) and comprised four types: perifoveolar thickening in 45 eyes (74%), macular oedema in 29 eyes (48%), foveal detachment in 11 eyes (18%) and atrophic changes in six eyes (10%). Only four eyes did not demonstrate any lesion. Conclusions: Among children with JIA uveitis, macular involvement is frequent and characterised by perifoveolar thickening and serous retinal detachment. OCT is a non-invasive instrument. It can easily identify this maculopathy, which could impair visual function, and require therapeutic intensification.

Abstract:Because of the deterioration of global water quality, the occurrence of chemical and microbial contaminants in water raises serious concerns for the health of the population. Identifying and developing effective and environmentally friendly water treatment technologies are critical to obtain clean water. Among the various technologies for the purification of water, ultraviolet photolysis of chlorine (UV/chlorine), an emerging advanced oxidation process (AOP), has multiple functions for the control of contaminants via the production of hydroxyl radicals (HO·) and reactive chlorine species (RCS), such as Cl·, ClO·, and Cl2·-.This Account centers around the radical chemistry of RCS and HO· in different water matrices and their roles and mechanisms in the abatement of contaminants. The concentrations of Cl·, ClO·, and Cl2·- are comparable to or higher than those of HO· (10-14 to 10-13 M). The reactivities of RCS are more selective than HO· with a broader range of second-order rate constants (k). The k values of Cl· toward most aromatics are higher or similar as compared to those of HO·, while those of Cl2·- and ClO· are less reactive but more selective toward aromatics containing electron-donating functional groups. Their major reaction mechanisms with Cl· are electron transfer and addition, while those with ClO· and Cl2·- primarily involve electron transfer. As for aliphatics, their reactivities with both HO· and RCS are much lower than those of aromatics. The reaction mechanisms for most of them with Cl· and Cl2·- are hydrogen abstraction, except for olefins, which are addition. In addition, RCS greatly contribute to the inactivation of microbial contaminants.Toward future application, the UV/chlorine process has both pros and cons. Compared with the traditional HO·-based AOP of UV/H2O2, UV/chlorine is more efficient and energy-saving for oxidation and disinfection, and its efficiency is less affected by water matrix components. However, the formation of toxic byproducts in UV/chlorine limits its application scenarios. In dissolved organic matter (DOM)-rich water, the formation of halogenated byproducts is enhanced in UV/chlorine. In the presence of ammonia, reactive nitrogen species (RNS) (e.g., ·NO and ·NO2) are involved, and highly toxic nitro(so) products such as nitro(so)-phenolics and N-nitrosodimethylamine are generated. For a niche application, the UV/chlorine process is recommended to be utilized in water with low levels of DOM and ammonia.Strategies should be developed to make full use of highly reactive species (RCS and HO·) for the abatement of target contaminants and to reduce the formation of toxic byproducts. For example, the UV/chlorine process can be used in tandem with other treatments to create multiple barriers for the production of safe water. In addition, halogen radicals are very important in ecosystems as well as other areas such as medical therapy and organic synthesis. UV/chlorine is the most efficient homogeneous system to generate halogen radicals, and thus it provides a perfect system to investigate the fates of halogen radicals for interdisciplinary research.

Abstract:Considering the increasing identification of trace organic contaminants in natural aquatic environments, the removal of trace organic contaminants from water or wastewater discharge is an urgent task. Ultraviolet (UV) and UV-based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as UV/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H2O2), UV/free chlorine and UV/persulfate, are attractive and promising approaches for the removal of these contaminants due to the high reactivity of active radical species produced in these UV-AOPs with a wide variety of organic contaminants. However, the removal efficiency of trace contaminants is greatly affected by the presence of background dissolved organic matter (DOM). In this study, we use ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry to evaluate the transformation of a standard Suwanee River fulvic acid DOM isolate in UV photolysis and UV-AOPs. The use of probe compounds allows for the determination of the steady-state concentrations of active radical species in each UV-AOP. The changes in the H/C and O/C elemental ratios, double bond equivalents, and the low-molecular-weight transformation product concentrations of organic acids reveal that different DOM transformation patterns are induced by each UV-AOP. By comparison with the known reactivities of each radical species with specific organic compounds, we mechanistically and systematically elucidate the molecular-level DOM transformation pathways induced by hydroxyl, chlorine, and sulfate radicals in UV-AOPs. We find that there is a distinct transformation in the aliphatic components of DOM due to HO• in UV/H2O2 and UV/free chlorine. Cl• induced transformation of olefinic species is also observed in the UV/free chlorine system. Transformation of aromatic and olefinic moieties by SO4•- are the predominant pathways in the UV/persulfate system.

Abstract:The UV/H2O2 process is a promising advanced oxidation process (AOP) for micropollutant abatement in drinking water treatment and water reuse plants. However, during micropollutant degradation by the AOP, dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation potential may also be altered. This study investigated the influence of the UV/H2O2 AOP on the elemental composition and DBP formation potential of two DOM isolates by using ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry (UHRMS). After the AOP, 629 new chemical formulas with an increased degree of oxidation and decreased aromaticity were obtained. Such alterations led to the formation of 226 unknown DBPs with decreased aromaticity indices (AImod) in the subsequent 3-day chlorination. Links between the unknown DBPs and the corresponding precursors in DOM were visualized by network computational analysis. The analysis gave three zones in the van Krevelen diagram based on the possibility of the C7-22HnOm formulas located in each zone to link to the corresponding DBPs. A further investigation with two model compounds reconfirmed the hydroxylation and ring cleavage of DOM by HO· attack during the AOP and the influence on DBP formation. These results obtained from UHRMS build the connection between the elemental composition of DOM and the formation potential of DBPs.

Abstract:In this work, UVA radiation that is part of solar light is taken as the irradiation source and radicals (HO, SO4- and HO2/O2-) are generated through activation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium persulfate (Na2S2O8) and Bismuth catalyst (BiOCl), respectively. The distinguished performance in removing acetaminophen (ACTP), a model pharmaceutical pollutant, by these three radicals was compared for the first time. Effect of pH, halide ions concentration and interfacial mechanism have been investigated in detail. Interestingly, results show that heterogeneous UVA/BiOCl process has higher degradation efficiency than homogeneous UVA/H2O2 and UVA/Na2S2O8 systems whatever the solution's pH. To explain these results, second order reaction rate constant (kradical, ACTP) have been determined with laser flash photolysis (LFP) or radical scavenging experiments. The strongly interfacial-depended HO2/O2- radicals have the lowest second order rate constant with ACTP but highest steady state concentration. BiOCl is much easier activated by UVA, and outstanding ACTP mineralization can be achieved. Combination of BiOCl and Na2S2O8 exhibits synergistic effects rather than antagonism effects with H2O2. This study highlights the relative effective utilization of solar light through interfacial directed BiOCl photocatalysis and its synergistic effects with traditional oxidants.
Modeling degradation kinetics of gemfibrozil and naproxen in the UV/chlorine system: Roles of reactive species and effects of water matrix

Abstract:The UV/chlorine system has been regarded as an efficient oxidation technology for the removal of aqueous micropollutants. However, the roles of the possible radical species for this system on the elimination under environmentally relevant conditions/real waters were still largely unknown. Herein, the specific roles of radical species in the UV/chlorine oxidation degradation of gemfibrozil and naproxen as representative micropollutants were quantified by a steady-state kinetic prediction model considering the effects of water matrices. Overall, the model predicted results are consistent with the experimental data well. •OH and reactive chlorine species (RCS, such as Cl•, ClO•, and Cl2•-) contributions to gemfibrozil and naproxen degradation were water matrix specific. In pure water, both primary reactive species (i.e., •OH and Cl•) and secondary species ClO• dominated gemfibrozil and naproxen degradation, and their individual and the sum of the contributions to degradation rates reduced with pH increase of from 5 to 9. In the presence of Cl-, we found that Cl2•- and in particular ClO• were responsible for the enhanced degradation with increasing Cl- concentrations due to the considerable ClO• reactivity of gemfibrozil (1.93 × 109 M-1 s-1) and naproxen (9.24 × 109 M-1 s-1) and the rapid transformation of Cl2•- to ClO•. The presence of HCO3- notably facilitated the degradation in the UV/chlorine process because of the generation of CO3•-. CO3•- showed high reactivity with gemfibrozil and naproxen corresponding to respective second-order reaction rate constants of 2.45 × 107 and 3.50 × 107 M-1 s-1. Dissolved organic matter induced obvious scavenging for •OH, Cl•, and ClO• and greatly retarded the degradation. The constructed model considering the effects of above water matrix has successfully predicted the oxidation degradation kinetics in real waters, and both •OH and CO3•- are the predominant reactive species in the degradation. This study is helpful for comprehensive understanding the roles of possible radical species in micropollutant removal by UV/chlorine oxidation under real water matrix.
Impact of Inorganic Anions on the Photodegradation of Herbicide Residues in Water by UV/Persulfate-Based Advanced Oxidation

Abstract:The removal of pesticides and other organic pollutants from water through advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) holds great promise. The main advantage of these technologies is that they remove, or at least reduce, pesticide levels by mineralization rather than transfer, as in conventional processes. This study first evaluated the effectiveness of UV/S2O8= compared to heterogeneous photocatalysis using UV/TiO2 processes on the degradation of two commonly used herbicides (terbuthylazine and isoproturon) in aqueous solutions using a laboratory photoreactor. In addition, the effect of the UV wavelength on the degradation efficiency of both herbicides was investigated. Although the degradation rate was greater under UV(254)/S2O8= nm than under UV(365)/S2O8= nm, complete degradation of the herbicides (0.2 mg L−1) was achieved within 30 min under UV-366 nm using a Na2S2O8 dose of 250 mg L−1 in the absence of inorganic anions. To assess the impact of the water matrix, the individual and combined effects of sulfate (SO4=), bicarbonate (HCO3−), and chloride (Cl−) were evaluated. These can react with hydroxyl (HO•) and sulfate (SO4•−) radicals generated during AOPs to form new radicals with a lower redox potential. The results showed negligible effects of SO4=, while the combination of HCO3− and Cl− seemed to be the key to the decrease in herbicide removal efficiency found when working with complex matrices. Finally, the main intermediates detected during the photodegradation process are identified, and the likely pathways involving dealkylation, dechlorination, and hydroxylation are proposed and discussed.

Abstract:The ozone-activated peroxymonosulfate process (O3/PMS) is an emerging advanced oxidation process for the removal of trace organic contaminants (TrOCs) in water, because it produces both hydroxyl and sulfate radicals. Its potential has been shown in distilled water, but limited research has been performed in real (waste)waters. Therefore, this work focuses on the added value of PMS in ozonation and on fundamental aspects of the process in three different types of water, i.e. secondary effluent, surface water and groundwater. The instantaneous ozone demand (IOD) of the different waters, representing the ozone decomposition by highly ozone reactive species, increased by adding PMS. This effect is more pronounced in surface water and groundwater than in secondary effluent, which indicates more reaction between O3 and PMS and thus a higher potential for radical production in less loaded matrices. This is also reflected in the (increased) removal of atrazine (ATZ) and chloramphenicol (CHLOR) when applying the O3/PMS process. Compared to ozonation, the removal efficiency obtained with O3/PMS was 12% higher in secondary effluent, while this was up to 35% and 43% higher in respectively surface water and groundwater. Scavenging experiments and removal of p-nitrobenzoic acid (pNBA), an ●OH probe, showed that hydroxyl radicals rather than sulfate radicals are the main species contributing for > 60% to O3/PMS induced TrOC removal in natural and wastewaters. Next to the bulk organic matter, chloride proved to be a crucial matrix constituent that might be responsible for the conversion of sulfate into hydroxyl radicals.

Effects of UV/H(2)O(2) advanced oxidation on chemical characteristics and chlorine reactivity of surface water natural organic matter

Abstract:The advanced oxidation process utilizing ultraviolet and hydrogen peroxide (UV/H(2)O(2)) is currently applied in commercial drinking water applications for the removal of various organic pollutants. Natural organic matter (NOM) present in the source water can also be oxidized and undergo changes at the fluence and H(2)O(2) concentrations applied in commercial drinking water UV/H(2)O(2) applications (fluences less than 2000 mJ cm(-2), initial H(2)O(2) concentrations less than 15 mg L(-1)). In this study, the impact of UV/H(2)O(2) on NOM's aromaticity, hydrophobicity, and potential to form trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs) was investigated for raw surface water and the same water with the very hydrophobic acid (VHA) fraction of NOM removed. During UV/H(2)O(2) treatments, NOM in the raw surface water was partially oxidized to less aromatic and hydrophobic characteristics, but was not mineralized, confirming findings from past research. Below fluences of 1500 mJ cm(-2) UV/H(2)O(2) treatment of the raw water did not lead to reduction in the formation potential of THMs. The formation potential of HAAs was reduced at a fluence of 500 mJ cm(-2) with only small additional reductions as fluence further increased. For the water from which the VHA fraction was removed, UV/H(2)O(2) treatment led to mineralization of NOM suggesting that, when coupled with a pre-treatment capable of removing the VHA fraction, UV/H(2)O(2) could achieve further reductions in NOM. These subsequent reductions in NOM led to continuous reductions in the formation potentials of THMs and HAAs as fluence increased.
Oxidation of Selected Trace Organic Compounds through the Combination of Inline Electro-Chlorination with UV Radiation (UV/ECl2) as Alternative AOP for Decentralized Drinking Water Treatment

Abstract:A large variety of Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) to degrade trace organic compounds during water treatment have been studied on a lab scale in the past. This paper presents the combination of inline electrolytic chlorine generation (ECl2) with low pressure UV reactors (UV/ECl2) in order to allow the operation of a chlorine-based AOP without the need for any chlorine dosing. Lab studies showed that from a Free Available Chlorine (FAC) concentration range between 1 and 18 mg/L produced by ECl2 up to 84% can be photolyzed to form, among others, hydroxyl radicals (OH) with an UV energy input of 0.48 kWh/m3. This ratio could be increased to 97% by doubling the UV energy input to 0.96 kWh/m3 and was constant throughout the tested FAC range. Also the achieved radical yield of 64% did not change along the given FAC concentration range and no dependence between pH 6 and pH 8 could be found, largely simplifying the operation of a pilot scale system in drinking water treatment. Whereas with ECl2 alone only 5% of benzotriazoles could be degraded, the combination with UV improved the degradation to 89%. Similar results were achieved for 4-methylbenzotriazole, 5-methylbenzotriazole and iomeprol. Oxipurinol and gabapentin were readily degraded by ECl2 alone. The trihalomethanes values were maintained below the Germany drinking water standard of 50 μg/L, provided residual chlorine concentrations are kept within the permissible limits. The here presented treatment approach is promising for decentralized treatment application but requires further optimization in order to reduce its energy requirements.

Abstract:With the fast development of peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-dominating processes in drinking water and wastewater treatment, residual PMS is easy to come across chlorine as these processes are usually followed by secondary chlorine disinfection. The synergistic effect of PMS and chlorine on the degradation of micro-organic pollutants is investigated by selecting acetaminophen (ACT) as a reference compound for the first time in this study. Unlike conventional PMS or chlorine activation which generates reactive species such as hydroxyl radical (<math>HO•</math>), sulfate radical (<math>SO4•−</math>), chlorine radical (<math>Cl•</math>), and singlet oxygen (1O2), the efficient ACT removal is attributed to the direct catalytic chlorination by PMS due to the significantly enhanced consumption of chlorine along with negligible change of PMS concentration at neutral condition, and the same reaction pathways in both PMS/chlorine and chlorine processes. The kinetic study demonstrates that ACT oxidation by PMS/chlorine follows second order reaction, and the degradation efficiency can be promoted at alkaline conditions with peak rate constants at pH 9.0−10.0. The presence of chloride can enhance the removal of ACT, while ammonium and humic acid significantly retard ACT degradation. Higher formation of selected disinfection by-products (DBPs) is observed in the PMS/chlorine process than in the sole chlorination. This study highlights the important role of PMS in organic pollutants degradation and DBPs formation during the chlorination process.

The multiple roles of chlorite on the concentrations of radicals and ozone and formation of chlorate during UV photolysis of free chlorine

Abstract:Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) has emerged as a promising alternative to free chlorine for water disinfection and/or pre-oxidation due to its reduced yields of chlorinated disinfection byproducts. ClO2 decomposes to form chlorite (ClO2-), which influences the following advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for micropollutant abatement in drinking water. This study aims at investigating the effects of ClO2- on the concentrations of reactive species (e.g., radicals and ozone) and on the formation of chlorate in the UV/chlorine AOP. Results showed that the concentration of ClO· in the UV/chlorine process remarkably decreased by 98.20-100.00% in the presence of ClO2- at concentration of 0.1-1.0 mg·L-1 as NaClO2. The concentrations of HO· and ozone decreased by 42.71-65.42% and by 22.02-64.31%, respectively, while the concentration of Cl· was less affected (i.e., 31.00-36.21% reduction). The overall concentrations of the reactive species were differentially impacted by ClO2-'s multiple roles in the process. UV photolysis of ClO2- generated HO· but not Cl·, ClO· or ozone under the drinking water relevant conditions. ClO2- also competed with chlorine for UV photons but this effect was minor (< 1.0%). The radicals/ozone scavenging by ClO2- outcompeted the above two to lead to the overall decreasing concentrations of the reactive species, in consistency with the kinetic model predicted trends. ClO2- reacted with radicals and ozone to form chlorate (ClO3-) but not perchlorate (ClO4-). HO· played a dominant role in ClO3- formation. The findings improved the fundamental understanding on micropollutant abatement and inorganic byproduct formation by the UV/chlorine process and other AOPs in ClO2--containing water.

Oxidative processes have been widely applied in drinking water treatment to improve microalgae removal; however, there is little information about their performance for AOM degradation. In this context, this study aimed to evaluate the performance of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), Fenton (H 2 O 2 /Fe(II)), and photo-Fenton (H 2 O 2 /Fe(II)/UV) processes for AOM removal. Low AOM removals (0.46 to 12.02%) were found using H 2 O 2 . The highest AOM removals for H 2 O 2 /Fe(II) (29.8%) and H 2 O 2 /Fe(II)/UV (67.0%) were obtained using 40 and 30 mg Fe∙L −1 at 150 min, respectively. In general, high pH values decreased AOM removals for H 2 O 2 /Fe(II) and H 2 O 2 /Fe(II)/UV processes and increased them for H 2 O 2 application. All oxidative processes had stabilized at 150 min, and further reaction time did not significantly increase the AOM removal. Trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) was evaluated using the optimal conditions of each process. Reductions of THMFP were 42.0, 74.0, and 83.4% for H 2 O 2 , H 2 O 2 /Fe(II), and H 2 O 2 /Fe(II)/UV, respectively. This study showed the potential of oxidative processes to complement AOM removal by the traditional technologies applied in water treatment. Further studies are required to optimize the parameters involved in the process to improve the cost-effectiveness of the processes and applicability in water treatment.

Achieving Realistic Ozonation Conditions with Synthetic Water Matrices comprising Low-Molecular-Weight Scavenger Compounds

Abstract:Ozonation is used worldwide for drinking water disinfection and increasingly also for micropollutant abatement from wastewater. Identification of transformation products formed during the ozonation of micropollutants is challenging due to several factors including (i) the reactions of both oxidants, ozone and hydroxyl radicals with the micropollutants, as well as with intermediate transformation products, (ii) effects of the water matrix on the ozone and hydroxyl radical chemistry and (iii) the generation of oxidation by-products. In this study, a simple approach to achieve realistic ozonation conditions in the absence of dissolved organic matter has been developed. It is based on composing synthetic water matrices with low-molecular-weight scavenger compounds (phenol, methanol, acetate, and carbonate) that mimic the chemical interactions of ozone and hydroxyl radicals with real water matrices. Synthetic waters composed of only four low-molecular-weight compounds successfully replicated two lake waters and two secondary wastewater effluents, matching instantaneous ozone demand, ozone and hydroxyl radical exposures in the initial phase, as well as the ozone evolution in the second phase of the ozonation process. The synthetic water matrices also reproduced the effects of temperature and pH changes observed in real waters. The abatement of two micropollutants, bezafibrate and atrazine, and the formation of the corresponding transformation products during ozonation were in agreement for synthetic and real waters. Furthermore, the kinetics and extent of bromate formation during ozonation in synthetic water were comparable to real lake water and wastewater. This supports the robustness of the proposed approach because bromate formation is very sensitive to the interplay of ozone and hydroxyl radicals. Furthermore, with the novel reaction system, a significant effect of hydroxyl radicals scavenging by carbonate on bromate formation was demonstrated. Overall, the herein-developed approach based on synthetic water matrices allows to perform realistic ozonation studies including both oxidants, ozone and hydroxyl radicals, without the constraints of using dissolved organic matter.

Abstract:Conversion of potable reuse water utilities and drinking water utilities from a low-pressure UV/H2O2 (LPUV/H2O2) advanced oxidation process (AOP) to alternative AOPs in which oxidants can effectively absorb photons and rapidly generate radicals has attracted great interest. Herein, we propose a novel UVA/ClO2 AOP for different water treatment scenarios because of reduced photon absorption by the background matrix and high molar absorptivity for ClO2 at UVA wavelengths. While the photolysis of ClO2 produces •Cl + O2 or •ClO + O(3P) via distinct product channels, we determined the parameters needed to accurately model the loss of oxidants and the formation of byproducts and combined a kinetic model with experimental data to determine quantum yields (Φ). Modeling incorporating the optimized Φ simultaneously predicted oxidant loss and the formation of major products -HOCl, Cl-, and ClO3-. We also systematically investigated the removal of three contaminants exhibiting different radical reactivities, the formation of 35 regulated and unregulated halogenated disinfection byproducts (DBPs), DBP-associated toxicity, and N-acetylcysteine thiol reactivity in synthetic or authentic RO permeates/surface waters treated by different AOPs. The kinetic model developed in this study was used to optimize operating conditions to control undesired products and improve contaminant removal efficiency. The results indicate that UVA/ClO2 can outperform LPUV/H2O2 in terms of electrical energy per order of contaminant degradation, disinfection byproduct formation, and toxicity indices.

Abstract:Oxidative treatment of drinking water has been practiced for more than a century. UV-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) have emerged as promising oxidative treatment technologies to eliminate recalcitrant chemicals and biological contaminants in drinking water. UV-AOPs inevitably alter the properties of natural organic matter (NOM) and affect the disinfection byproduct (DBP) formation in the post-disinfection. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on the effects of UV-AOPs on the changes of NOM properties and the consequent impacts on DBP formation in the post-chlorination process. A tutorial review to the connotations of NOM properties (e.g., bulk properties, fractional constituents, and molecular structures) and the associated state-of-the-art analytical methods are firstly presented. The impacts of different radical-based AOPs on the changes of NOM properties together with the underlying NOM-radical reaction mechanisms are discussed. The impacts of alteration of NOM properties on DBP formation in the post-chlorination process are then reviewed. The current knowledge gaps and future research needs are finally presented, with emphases on the needs to strengthen the comparability of research data in literature, the accuracy in quantifying the reactive moieties of NOM, and the awareness of unknown DBPs in oxidative water treatment processes. The review and discussion improve the fundamental understanding of NOM-radical and NOM-chlorine chemistry. They also provide useful implications on the engineering design and operation of next-generation drinking water treatment plants.

Abstract:Ultraviolet-based advanced oxidation processes (UV-AOPs) are very promising in advanced treatment of municipal secondary effluents. However, the transformation of dissolved effluent organic matter (dEfOM) in advanced treatment of real wastewater, particularly at molecular level, remains unclear. In this study, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) coupled with multiple statistical analysis were performed to better understand the transformation of dEfOM in UV/H2O2, UV/persulfate (UV/PS), and UV/chlorine treatments. An obvious increase in oxygen content of dEfOM was observed after every UV-AOPs treatment, and the detailed oxygenation processes were further uncovered by mass difference analysis based on 24 types of typical reactions. Generally, UV/H2O2 process was subjected to the most oxygenation reactions with the typical tri-hydroxylation one (+3O), whereas di-hydroxylation reaction (+H2O2) was dominant in UV/PS and UV/chlorine processes. Additionally, the three UV-AOPs shared the majority of precursors, and more proportions of unique products were identified for each process. The precursors with lower H/C and higher aromaticity were readily degraded by UV/chlorine over UV/H2O2 and UV/PS, with the products featuring lower molecular weight. Moreover, dEfOM of high aromaticity tended to produce chlorinated byproducts through addition reactions in chlorination and UV/chlorine processes. Among these UV-AOPs, the highest reduction of both acute toxicity and specific UV absorbance at 254 nm (SUVA(254)) was observed for UV/chlorine, implying the potential for UV/chlorine process in advanced treatment of wastewater. In addition, acute toxicity was highly correlated with SUVA(254) and CHOS compounds. Abstract:Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a demyelinating disease of the central nervous system caused by infection of oligodendrocytes by JC virus. As patients with HIV survive longer with severe immunodeficiency, the incidence of PML is rising. Diagnosis is not always easy and the gold standard remains histological confirmation of the characteristic lesions of PML which requires a brain biopsy. This is considered too invasive by many clinicians and patients alike and detection of JC virus DNA in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is used as an alternative to biopsy. JC virus subtype detection in brain, CSF and blood leukocytes may offer further diagnostic and prognostic possibilities. The aetiology, clinical features and diagnostic problems of PML are reviewed. At present the outlook for patients with confirmed PML is poor and there is currently no effective treatment. However, novel approaches to treatment are under investigation and show some promise.
