Abstract:Vitamin C (VC) maintains the activity of sulfhydrylase and the reduced state of glutathione, and acts as a detoxifying agent. It is widely found in plant tissues as well as in fresh fruits and vegetables. Accurate determination of vitamin C content is of great significance for diet and health care. In this work, MnO2 nanoflakes as the biomimetic oxidase was used to react with VC and TMB was used as a chromogenic agent. The color of the final solution reflects the concentration of VC. And the bionic E-eye as a portable in-situ detection platform was designed to analyzed the color change in 10 s by photographing. By optimizing experimental conditions, the linear range of this method for VC detection is from 7.8 μM to 62.5 μM and the detection limit 7.65 μM which is much lower than other methods. Besides, this methods shows good selectivity, short reaction time (10 min) and also was used for VC detection in artificial urine samples, which shows great potential in disease monitoring.

Abstract:In this work, a ratiometric fluorescent probe for Vitamin C (VC) detection was constructed based on water-soluble silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs), o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and MnO2 nanosheets. Firstly, bright blue fluorescent SiNPs with high quantum yield were synthesized by a hydrothermal method using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) as silicon source and guanine as reducing agent. Then, MnO2 nanosheets with a wide absorption band were prepared. In the sensing system, MnO2 nanosheets play three crucial roles: fluorescence quencher of SiNPs, oxidation OPD to yellow fluorescent 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD) with a emission at 560 nm, and VC recognition. The SiNPs/OPD/MnO2 probe possessed two obvious emission peaks at 465 nm and 560 nm under 405 nm excitation. With the addition of VC, MnO2 nanosheets were reduced, and the fluorescence quenching ability and oxidase-like properties were weakened, thus restricting the production of oxOPD and recovering the fluorescence of SiNPs. Therefore, with the increase of VC concentration, the fluorescence (FL) intensity of the sensing system increased at 465 nm while decreased at 560 nm. Based on this, a ratiometric fluorescence method was established for VC detection by using the FL intensity ratio (F560/F465) as signal readout. The detection range was 0.5-40 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.42 μM. Moreover, the proposed method demonstrated good practicability for VC detection in VC tablets, VC chewable tablets and VC injection with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract:Collagen formation and the sulfation of protein-polysaccharides in the organic matrix of bone and dentin was studied in young, magnesium-deficient rats of the Long-Evans strain. Autoradiography was employed to assess the incorporation of tritiated proline into collagen, and 35S sulfate was utilized to study the sulfation of protein-polysaccharides. Our observations on the uptake of these radioactive precursors indicate that a deficiency of magnesium interferes both with collagen formation and the sulfation of glycosaminoglycuronoglycans in the organic matrices of bone and dentin. Alkaline phosphatase activity, determined in serum samples and observed histochemically in calcifying tissues, was depressed in the magnesium-deficient animals as compared with controls. The localization of alkaline phosphatase activity in bone and dentin forming tissues from experimental rats was found to be similar to that of the controls, but the intensity of the staining reaction was reduced in the tissues from the magnesium-deficient animals. Suppression of enzyme systems known to be activated by magnesium and related to protein and protein-polysaccharide biosynthesis would, in part, explain the results of this experiment.
A Turn-on Fluorescent Probe for Vitamin C Based on the Use of a Silicon/coooh Nanoparticle System

Abstract:The authors describe a fluorometric method for the turn-on determination of vitamin C (ascorbic acid). The blue fluorescence of silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs; with excitation/emission maxima at 350/450 nm) is found to be quenched by CoOOH nanoparticles (NPs). In the presence of vitamin C, the CoOOH NPs are decomposed by a redox reaction between the diol group of vitamin C and CoOOH NPs. As a result, fluorescence recovers. On the basis of this finding, a fluorometric method was designed for the turn-on detection of vitamin C. Under optimal conditions, the method has a low detection limit (0.47 μM) and a linear response in the 0.5 μM to 20 μM a concentration range. It was successfully applied to the determination of vitamin C in spiked red grape and orange juice, and in vitamin C tablets.

The proposed method exploits the image and data processing abilities of computers by coupling a digital camera and a color reaction. An image acquisition device was developed to collect the image information of the solution to be measured after the color reaction. The corresponding RGB and Lab color components were obtained by an image analysis software. Further, the standard curves of the vitamin C concentration and color component were established by nonlinear, linear, and multivariate data fitting. The detection range was 0.81-20.00 µg mL-1 (R2 = 0.9994), LOD was 0.24 µg mL-1, LOQ was 0.81 µg mL-1, accuracy was 98.95%, and precision was determined with an RSD of 0.73%. A comparison of the results confirmed that the proposed method's accuracy was higher than that of the spectrophotometric method. The proposed method has a simple design and facilitates easy operation, and the cost of the equipment is only US$ 31.43. Therefore, it can replace the traditional spectrophotometric method for the determination of vitamin C content in fruits and vegetables and is highly applicable in the food, chemical, and medical fields.

Abstract:Although a few of fluorescent probes based on carbon dots (CDs) for vitamin B (VB) determination have been emerged, none of them can realize the detection of different kinds of VB. In this paper, nitrogen, chlorine co-doped dual-emission CDs (N, Cl-CDs) with emissions at 404 nm and 595 nm have been easily synthesized. VB 2 , VB 9 and VB 12 can all induce obvious fluorescence turn-off response toward the N, Cl-CDs. Based on that, three types of VBs are quantitatively and sensitively evaluated in aqueous solution with wide concentration ranges of 14.9–135.0 μM, 34.7–89.8 μM and 29.8–79.8 μM, respectively. Importantly, visual semiquantitative detection of VBs on a test strip are also proposed. Moreover, the current N, Cl-CDs have been successfully applied to the detection of VBs in real samples. The N, Cl-CDs are sensitively multifunctional sensors for three kinds of VBs in aqueous solution and the visual semiquantitative detection by test paper assay is simple, portable and inexpensive.

Abstract:A nanocomposite (UiO-66/Ce-MnO2) was fabricated by combining UiO-66 with cerium-doped manganese dioxide (Ce-MnO2) for colorimetric detecting vitamin C (Vc). Compared with traditional artificial enzymes, the as-synthesized UiO-66/Ce-MnO2 were simple to prepare and did not require the participation of other active substances. The doping of cerium increased the oxygen vacancies and the UiO-66 as a carrier improved the dispersibility. The formation of superoxide anion (O2-) and the inside Ce4+/Ce3+ and Mn4+/Mn3+ redox couples of UiO-66/Ce-MnO2 endowed UiO-66/Ce-MnO2 with a high catalytic capability, which could catalytically oxidize 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into oxidation state TMB (oxTMB) without H2O2, accompanying with color change and a prominent peak at 652 nm in UV-vis spectra. Based on the inhibitory effects of Vc on catalytic oxidation of TMB, detection of Vc can be achieved, exhibiting a linear relationship in the concentration of 1.13-17.01 μmol L-1 with a low detection limit of 65.82 nmol L-1. This system can also be detected by smartphone, the linear detection range is 12.47-22.67 μmol L-1. Vc contents in fruits and vegetables detected by the sensor were in good agreement with the 2, 4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine colorimetry method (P > 0.05), indicating a reliable sensor for Vc detection.

Abstract:Novel ionic liquid-functionalized carbon quantum dots (IL-CDs) were prepared by hydrothermal method, and characterized with FT-IR, TEM and XPS. The IL-CDs exhibited narrower particle size distribution with more uniform dispersion and the surface potential changes from negative to positive due to the function of IL. IL-CDs could be quenched (“turned off”) after adding ascorbic acid (AA), and as an “on–off”, fluorescent probe could be established for direct analysis AA. The linear range of AA was 0.34–30.00 μg/mL and the LOD was 0.11 μg/mL. The method was successfully applied to the determination of AA in real samples with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Polypyrrole (PPy) nanowires were prepared by template-free method electrochemically on the surface of graphite electrode. The Ni/polypyrrole nanowire (Ni-GS) and Ni/polypyrrole cauliflower (Ni-PS-CF) modified graphite electrodes were prepared by electrodeposited Ni on the different electrodes. The electrocatalytic activity of Ni/PPy nanowires (Ni- GS) and Ni/PPy cauliflower (Ni-GS-CF) modified graphite electrodes towards nitrate were characterized by electroreduction of nitrate and their reduction products. The effect of solution pH, electrolytic potentials and electrolytic current density on nitrate electrolysis and the products were also examined. The experimental results indicate that the suitable electrolytic condition toward nitrate on the modified electrodes is at low pH, higher potential and medium current density, at the meantime, also indicate that the Ni-GS modified electrodes can effectively reduce nitrate and have high electrocatalytic activity toward nitrate than the Ni-GS-CF modified graphite electrode. And the the products of nitrite and ammonia are always at low concentratio. So the Ni-GS nanowires modified electrodes have promising application in environmental remediation.
High luminescent N,S,P co-doped carbon dots for the fluorescence sensing of extreme acidity and folic acid

Abstract:Carbon dots have been popular luminescent materials because of their excellent fluorescence properties, but the low quantum yield limits their application. Heteroatom doping is a more convenient and popular approach to increase the quantum yield of carbon dots. Here, a novel N,S,P heteroatom co-doped carbon dots (N,S,P-CDs) was synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method using m-phenylenediamine, L-cysteine and phosphoric acid as raw materials. The as-prepared N,S,P-CDs showed excellent photoluminescence properties with fluorescence quantum yield up to 41%, which greatly encourages their application in fluorescence sensing. The N,S,P-CDs exhibited good fluorescence stability under salt solution, xenon lamp irradiation and ultraviolet lamp irradiation except for high sensitivity to extreme acidity. The fluorescence intensity of N,S,P-CDs can be decreased as high as 85% when pH of the solution changes from 2.50-4.75, that is, small fluctuation in pH can cause an intense response of the fluorescence of N,S,P-CDs. Therefore, an excellent fluorescence sensing platform for accurate monitoring pH of extreme acidity is constructed. In addition, the N,S,P-CDs can be applied for quantitative detection of folic acid based on the strong quenching effect of folic acid on the fluorescence of the N,S,P-CDs. A good linearity is obtained in the concentration range of 4.85-82.45 μM, with the detection limit of 0.148 μM. The constructed sensing platform was used for the determination of folic acid in the actual sample of range juice, oatmeal and tablets with satisfactory results.

Abstract:Vitamin A as a powerful antioxidant plays an important role in human body functions including bone remodeling regulation, healthy immune system and cell growth reproduction. An accurate determination of vitamin A is taken into consideration because of its importance for human health. In this paper, we reported a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) probe, MPS-capped ZnS QDs, for sensitive and selective detection of vitamin A. The colloidal MPS-capped ZnS QDs were prepared from Zinc acetate and sodium sulfide by employing 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) molecules as the stabilizer or capping agent at the pH condition of 10. The synthesized MPS-capped ZnS QDs were characterized by means of FT-IR, UV-Vis, DLS, and TEM techniques. The sensing behavior of MPS-capped ZnS QDs for selective and sensitive detection of vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin H, vitamin D3 and vitamin C was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy. The detection mechanism involves photoinduced charge transfer from the surface of ZnS QDs to Vitamin resulting in the fluorescence quenching of ZnS QDs followed by nonradiative fluorescence resonance energy transfer. An excellent selectivity was observed for vitamin A versus other tested species. A linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence intensity of MPS-capped ZnS QDs and the concentration of vitamin A in the range of 3.33-36.66 μM with detection limit of 1.062 μM.
Unlocking multi-mode sensing potential: Phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots for Ag+, ciprofloxacin, and riboflavin analysis in environment and food matrices

Abstract:The simultaneous detection of multiple analytes through a single fluorescence sensor is highly attractive. In this study, phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (P-CNQDs) were developed, achieving multi-mode sensing through three distinct response mechanisms. The preparation involved using melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate as the phosphorus source. Uniform and narrowly distributed P-CNQDs were successfully synthesized through chemical oxidation and hydrothermal methods, with an average size of 2.4 nm. These unique P-CNQDs exhibited fluorescence quenching through photo-induced electron transfer (PET) in response to Ag+. Additionally, the formation of hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions between P-CNQDs-Ag+ and ciprofloxacin (CIP) led to a pronounced fluorescence response to CIP by the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) mechanism. Furthermore, leveraging the principle of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), P-CNQDs-CIP served as a ratio fluorescence sensor for riboflavin (RF), enabling ultra-sensitive detection of RF. The combination of PET, CHEF, and FRET response mechanisms successfully facilitated multi-mode sensing for Ag+, CIP, and RF. The detection ranges were 0.05-100 μM, 0.002-2 μM, and 0.05-60 μM, with corresponding lowest detection limits of 17.1 nM, 1.1 nM, and 29.2 nM, respectively. This versatile sensor has been effectively applied to real samples, including the detection of river water and vitamin B2 tablets.

Abstract:The determination of vitamin B6 (VB6) in food is of great significance due to its vital role in maintaining health and its necessity for ingestion through dietary sources. Therefore, based on ionic liquid-based yellow-emitting carbon dots (Y-CDs), a novel fluorescence-smartphone dual-mode method was first developed. The present method was applied to the detection of VB6 in milk. In the fluorescence method, the formation of complexes between VB6 and Y-CDs results in a significant decrease of the fluorescence intensity of Y-CDs. VB6 in milk samples was successfully determined according to this method, which exhibited a low detection limit (5 × 10-5 mg/mL) and excellent recoveries (98.80%-103.80%), demonstrating its feasibility in real sample analysis. In addition, the smartphone-based analysis method was established by researching the correlation between different VB6 concentrations and the (R + B) values of Y-CDs. When this method was applied, the detection process of VB6 was simplified. By combining the two methods, the possibility of incorrect analysis results can be effectively reduced, and the reliability of detection results can be improved through cross-validation of the two methods. Compared with traditional chromatography and electrochemical methods, the dual-mode method was more rapid, convenient, accurate, and suitable for the detection of VB6.

Abstract:In this work, orange emission fluorescent multifunctional carbon dots (O-CDs) were designed for the label-free detection of vitamin B12 (VB12),endogenous/exogenous peroxynitrite (ONOO-) sensing, cell imaging, and fluorescent flexible film preparation. The O-CDs with excitation-independent were prepared using safranine T and ethanol as precursors via one-step hydrothermal process. VB12 was utilized as a quencher to quench the fluorescence of O-CDs due to the internal filtration effect (IFE). Two-segment linear ranges are 1-65 μM and 70-140 μM, and the detection limit was calculated as 0.62 μM. Besides, ONOO- can reduce the fluorescence intensity of O-CDs based on static quenching (SQ). The linear ranges are 0.3-9 μM and 9-48 μM, and the detection limit was 0.06 μM. Moreover, the O-CDs were exploited as a cellular imaging reagent for intracellular VB12 and endogenous/exogenous ONOO- imaging owing to its great biocompatibility, low toxicity and strong photostability. These results indicate that O-CDs have the potential to be used as a sensitive fluorescence probe to rapidly monitor VB12 and endogenous/exogenous ONOO- with high selectivity in living cells. Also, the as-proposed O-CDs can be employed to fabricate O-CDs/PVA composites as fluorescent flexible films. All of the above prove that the O-CDs present great prospect in multiple applications such as biosensing, cellular labeling, biomedical optical imaging, and fluorescent films.

Highly Efficient Electrochemiluminescence of Cyanovinylene-Contained Polymer Dots in Aqueous Medium and Its Application in Imaging Analysis

Abstract:Luminescent semiconducting polymer dots (Pdots) have attracted intense attention in the field of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) due to their nontoxic features. For utilizing the nontoxic Pdots to achieve sensitive ECL bioimaging detection, this work studied the ECL behaviors of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-(1-cyanovinylene-1,4-phenylene)] (CN-PPV) Pdots in aqueous solution, which introduced an electron-withdrawing cyano group to p-phenylenevinylene for enhancing the luminescent efficiency. The CN-PPV Pdots could be both electrochemically oxidized to a positively charged state and electrochemically reduced to a negatively charged state, which led to annihilation of ECL emission. The order of oxidation and reduction greatly influenced the annihilation behavior. In the presence of tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) or S2O82- as a coreactant, the CN-PPV Pdots showed strong band gap ECL emission at 602 nm, which followed two different routes and gave ECL efficiencies of 11.22% and 1.84% (vs Ru(bpy)32+/TPrA), respectively. The high ECL efficiency allowed CN-PPV Pdots/TPrA system for ECL imaging analysis. As a proof-of-methodology, an ECL imaging method was designed via the chelating interaction of metal ions and Pdots to achieve high selectivity. The proposed ECL imaging chip-based sensor exhibited excellent analytical performance for Fe3+ with a wide linear range from 100 pM to 100 μM and a detection limit of 67 pM. Compared with the ECL methods based on the direct intensity measurement, the developed ECL imaging method possesses the advantages of simplicity, rapid, and high-throughput and has application potential in monitoring water and food quality.
Highly photoluminescent nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots as a green fluorescence probe for determination of myricetin

Abstract:Highly photoluminescent N-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CDs) which the quantum yield reached 63% were prepared through hydrothermal treatment. The obtained N-CDs displayed a uniform distribution of particle size, superior stability in high-salt conditions, and excellent sensitivity. A green fluorescence probe based on N-CDs was constructed for ultrasensitive determination of myricetin in vine tea on account of the static quenching. The N-CDs presented excellent linear fluorescence response in the concentration range of 0.2-40 μM and 56-112 μM and with a low detection limit of 56 nM. Additionally, the practicability of the probe was verified in spiked vine tea sample, and the satisfactory recoveries of myricetin varied from 98.8% to 101.2%, with relative standard deviations in the range of 1.52%-3.48%. It is the first time to employ N-CDs without any material modification as a fluorescence sensor to detect myricetin, which is a promising approach to expand the path for myricetin screening.

Abstract:A rapid, facile and ultrasensitive fluorescence sensing system based on beer-derived nitrogen, phosphorus co-doped carbon quantum dots (N, P-CQDs) for the detection of ascorbic acid (AA) in fruits was proposed. N, P-CQDs were successfully synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method, which afforded a high quantum yield (21.7 %), and showed the fluorescence with a maximum emission wavelength of 450 nm at an excitation wavelength of 370 nm. Further, N, P-CQDs were employed as an efficient sensor for ultrasensitive Fe3+-detection at concentrations ranging from 1-20 µM and 100-300 µM, respectively. N, P-CQDs@Fe3+ showed a high sensitivity and selectivity for AA detection. A linear response range for AA was obtained from 1 to 200 µM with limit of detection of 0.84 µM was obtained for AA. The result of MTT test showed that N, P-CQDs exhibit low toxicity, providing fast, accurate and less toxic route for testing AA in the food analysis fields.

Abstract:The abuse of tetracycline (TC) has resulted in serious environmental pollution and the preparation of highly sensitive fluorescent probes capable of rapidly detecting TC has become a hot research field. All-inorganic halide perovskites have attracted extensive because of their good fluorescent properties, while the instability in polar solvents hinders its development for practical applications. In the present study, a perovskite quantum dot that can emit green fluorescence was prepared, and a ratio nanocomposite fluorescent probe (CsPbBr 3 @Cs 4 PbBr 6 @NH 2 @Eu) for the rapid visual assessment of TC in ethanol was obtained through functional modification by rare earth complexes. The continuous addition of TC led to the distinct color transition from green to red, resulting in the visualized multicolor sensing for TC. The probe had a good linear relationship with detection limit of 12.1 nM. The sensing mechanism research indicated that the quenching of perovskite nanocrystals in the probe was caused by the PET effect, and the red fluorescence enhancement was caused by the "antenna effect" produced by the chelation of TC with Eu 3+ . In addition, a portable wearable device for the fast visual detection of TC was developed to realize the rapid and intelligent detection of TC in actual fruit samples.
