Abstract:In this paper, we constructed a label-free ratiometric fluorescence nanoprobe for ascorbic acid (AA) on the basis of the change in dual-emission signals by the specific reaction between cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) and AA. CoOOH nanoflakes were used as the recognition unit while polymer dots (PFO dots) and gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) served as luminescent units of the nanoprobe. After electrostatic assembly of PFO dots and AuNCs on the surface of CoOOH nanoflakes, the energy transfer between the PFO dots and CoOOH could occur and thereby quench the fluorescence of the PFO dots. When AA was present, CoOOH nanoflakes were reduced to Co2+, resulting in a recovery of the fluorescence of the PFO dots. In the meantime, the generated Co2+ could combine with the surface ligands of AuNCs, accompanied by a reduction in the luminescence intensity of the AuNCs. Therefore, the fluorescence intensity ratio of PFO dots to AuNCs would be related to the concentration of AA. The nanoprobe enabled highly sensitive analysis of AA with a detection limit of 1.9 μM and showed great performance in human serum samples and living cells. This report may not only endow a CoOOH-based nanoprobe with improved ability but also offer a novel strategy for the construction of ratiometric nanoprobes for AA and have potential applications in research into and clinical diagnosis of AA-related diseases.
A Kit for Colorimetric VC Detection Combining with Bionic E-eye

Abstract:Vitamin C (VC) maintains the activity of sulfhydrylase and the reduced state of glutathione, and acts as a detoxifying agent. It is widely found in plant tissues as well as in fresh fruits and vegetables. Accurate determination of vitamin C content is of great significance for diet and health care. In this work, MnO2 nanoflakes as the biomimetic oxidase was used to react with VC and TMB was used as a chromogenic agent. The color of the final solution reflects the concentration of VC. And the bionic E-eye as a portable in-situ detection platform was designed to analyzed the color change in 10 s by photographing. By optimizing experimental conditions, the linear range of this method for VC detection is from 7.8 μM to 62.5 μM and the detection limit 7.65 μM which is much lower than other methods. Besides, this methods shows good selectivity, short reaction time (10 min) and also was used for VC detection in artificial urine samples, which shows great potential in disease monitoring.
Bioinspired Carbon Quantum Dots for Sensitive Fluorescent Detection of Vitamin B12 in Cell System.

Abstract:Zwitterion-modification, as a bioinspired strategy, provides greatly promising platforms for biological detection and sensor applications. A green, low-cost and straight-forward method for synthesis of highly fluorescent biomimetic carbon quantum dots (BCQDs) has been developed via pyrolysis of cytidine diphosphate choline (CDPC) and ethylenediamine. The BCQDs with a strong emission at wavelength of 450 nm shows ultrasensitive sensing capability for vitamin B12 with high selectivity. Using the fluorometric assay, the detection limit (DL) for vitamin B12 was found to be as low as 81 nM. Meanwhile, the results of 3-(4,5)-dimethylthiahiazo(-z-y1)-3,5-di-phenytetrazoliumromide (MTT), hemolysis measuring and morphological characterization of Red blood cells (RBCs) confirms the excellent biocompatibility of BCQDs. The imaging experiments of human cervical cancer cells (HeLa) certify that BCQDs could be served as an effective fluorescent sensing probe for label-free sensitive and selective detection of vitamin B12 in biological samples on account of their low toxicity and good biocompatibility. The BCQDs, further, were successfully applied to probe vitamin B12 in living cells, which broaden its potential application in vivo system.

Abstract:In this work, orange emission fluorescent multifunctional carbon dots (O-CDs) were designed for the label-free detection of vitamin B12 (VB12),endogenous/exogenous peroxynitrite (ONOO-) sensing, cell imaging, and fluorescent flexible film preparation. The O-CDs with excitation-independent were prepared using safranine T and ethanol as precursors via one-step hydrothermal process. VB12 was utilized as a quencher to quench the fluorescence of O-CDs due to the internal filtration effect (IFE). Two-segment linear ranges are 1-65 μM and 70-140 μM, and the detection limit was calculated as 0.62 μM. Besides, ONOO- can reduce the fluorescence intensity of O-CDs based on static quenching (SQ). The linear ranges are 0.3-9 μM and 9-48 μM, and the detection limit was 0.06 μM. Moreover, the O-CDs were exploited as a cellular imaging reagent for intracellular VB12 and endogenous/exogenous ONOO- imaging owing to its great biocompatibility, low toxicity and strong photostability. These results indicate that O-CDs have the potential to be used as a sensitive fluorescence probe to rapidly monitor VB12 and endogenous/exogenous ONOO- with high selectivity in living cells. Also, the as-proposed O-CDs can be employed to fabricate O-CDs/PVA composites as fluorescent flexible films. All of the above prove that the O-CDs present great prospect in multiple applications such as biosensing, cellular labeling, biomedical optical imaging, and fluorescent films.

Abstract:Recently, widespread attention has been paid to red emissive carbon dots (CDs) which have desirable optical properties, low toxicity, and biocompatibility. Despite great efforts, the facile preparation of red dual-emissive CDs useful for ratiometric detection and bioimaging remains challenging. Here, we report a facile synthesis of red dual-emissive CDs and their potential for ratiometric fluorescence sensing and cellular imaging. Derived from the hydrothermal treatment of dicyandiamide and o-phenylenediamine in dilute sulfuric acid, the CDs are surface-tailored with nitrogen-, oxygen-, and sulfur-containing functional groups. The as-prepared CDs show various good features, including good water solubility, biocompatibility, excitation-independent dual-emission with two photoluminescence (PL) peaks centered at 630 and 680 nm, and an absolute quantum yield (QY) of 30.2% in water. The CDs exhibit a selective, sensitive, rapid, and stable ratiometric fluorescence response toward methyl blue, giving a linear relationship in the range of 0.5-300 mu M with a correlation coefficient (R-2) of 0.997. We also study ratiometric fluorescence sensing for the accurate detection of pH. Moreover, the CDs possess good cellular imaging ability, indicating their promising applicability for biomedical applications. These results pave a way toward the fabrication of red dual-emissive carbon-based nanomaterials useful for both ratiometric sensing and bioimaging.

Abstract:A heterocyclic Schiff base (MPDPI)was synthesized by the condensation reaction of 1-phenylisatin with 4,5-dimethylphenylene diamine. It was characterized by using spectroscopic methods including UV visible, Infrared, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and mass spectrometry. It acts as the fluorescent probe for the detection of Vitamin B12 (Vit.B12) which shows high selectivity over other species via dynamic quenching mechanism. It is also highly sensitive towards Vit.B12 with a detection limit of (1.18 imes {10}^{-9})M and showed a linear concentration ranging from (1 imes {10}^{-7 }M) to (5 imes {10}^{-7 }M). Effect of other coexisting species was also studied. The satisfactory results were also obtained in real samples.Since, there are only few reports on Vit.B12, development of selective fluorescent probes for Vit.B12 would be worthwhile.

Abstract:Herein, efficient red carbon dots (R-CDs) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal treatment of N -(4-amino phenyl) acetamide and (2,3-difluoro phenyl) boronic acid. The optimal emission peak of R-CDs was at 602 nm (under 520 nm excitation) and the absolute fluorescence quantum yield of R-CDs was 12.9%. Polydopamine, which was formed by the self-polymerization and cyclization of dopamine in alkaline condition, emitted characteristic fluorescence with peak position of 517 nm (under 420 nm excitation) and affected the fluorescence intensity of R-CDs through inner filter effect. L-Ascorbic acid (AA), which was the hydrolysis product of L-ascorbic acid-2-phosphate trisodium salt under the catalytic reaction of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), effectively prevented the polymerization of dopamine. Combined with the ALP-mediated AA production and the AA-mediated polydopamine generation, the ratiometric fluorescence signal of polydopamine with R-CDs was correlated closely with the concentration of both AA and ALP. Under optimal conditions, the detection limits of AA and ALP were 0.28 μM during linear range of 0.5–30 μM and 0.044 U/L with linear range of 0.05–8 U/L, respectively. This ratiometric fluorescence detection platform can efficiently shield the background interference of sophisticated samples by introducing a self-calibration as reference signal in a multi-excitation mode, which can detect AA and ALP in human serum samples with satisfactory results. Such R-CDs/polydopamine nanocomposite provides a steadfast quantitative information and makes R-CDs be excellent candidate for biosensors via combining target recognition strategy.

Abstract:Although a few of fluorescent probes based on carbon dots (CDs) for vitamin B (VB) determination have been emerged, none of them can realize the detection of different kinds of VB. In this paper, nitrogen, chlorine co-doped dual-emission CDs (N, Cl-CDs) with emissions at 404 nm and 595 nm have been easily synthesized. VB 2 , VB 9 and VB 12 can all induce obvious fluorescence turn-off response toward the N, Cl-CDs. Based on that, three types of VBs are quantitatively and sensitively evaluated in aqueous solution with wide concentration ranges of 14.9–135.0 μM, 34.7–89.8 μM and 29.8–79.8 μM, respectively. Importantly, visual semiquantitative detection of VBs on a test strip are also proposed. Moreover, the current N, Cl-CDs have been successfully applied to the detection of VBs in real samples. The N, Cl-CDs are sensitively multifunctional sensors for three kinds of VBs in aqueous solution and the visual semiquantitative detection by test paper assay is simple, portable and inexpensive.

Abstract:Summary Sera from patients with various forms of hyperparathyroidism were concentrated and fractionated on Bio-gel P-10 columns. Eluted fractions were assayed for immunoreactive PTH. In addition to glandular PTH, two smaller fragments were identified (mol wt 7000–7500 and 4500–5000, respectively). Glandular PTH and fragments differed in their immunologic and kinetic properties. The results appear to explain divergent results reported from various laboratories in the application of the immunossay of PTH to clinical investigation. J. M. Abstract:Ascorbic acid (AA) is essential for human body. Thus, its selective, sensitive, and accurate sensing and imaging are greatly important for clinical chemistry and diagnostics. Here, carbon dots (CDs) with two emissions at 520 and 668 nm under 415 nm excitation were effectively fabricated via solvothermal method using black pepper as raw materials. Formation of nonfluorescent CDs-Fe3+ complex led to the main quenching of near-infrared (NIR) emission at 668 nm. Then redox reaction between Fe3+ and AA recovered the fluorescence. Thus, the resultant CDs were developed as a NIR ratiometric nanoprobe for AA determination based on off-on mode with excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. In addition, the good photostability, low toxicity and excellent biocompatibility made as-prepared CDs a biosensing platform for intracellular AA imaging. As a novel member of dual-emission CDs, the proposed strategy has tremendous potential to broaden their applications in biological fields.

Abstract:Herein, we develop a novel method to synthesize lanthanide-functionalized carbon quantum dots via free-radical copolymerization using the methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer as a functional monomer and introducing a lanthanide complex to obtain the dual-emission fluorescent composite material FCQDs-Ln(TFA)3 (Ln = Eu, Tb; TFA: trifluoroacetylacetone). The obtained composites were fully characterized, and their structures were investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), 1H NMR spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Subsequently, a series of white-light-emitting polymer composite films FCQDs- (Eu:Tb)(TFA)3/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were designed and synthesized by adjusting the ratio of Eu(TFA)3/Tb(TFA)3 under different wavelengths. More significantly, FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 was selected as a sensitive probe for sensing metal cations due to excellent photoluminescence properties, revealing a unique capability of FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 of detecting Fe(III) cations with high efficiency and selectivity. Furthermore, the sensing experiment results indicated that FCQDs-Tb(TFA)3 is ideal as a fluorescent nanoprobe for Fe3+ ion detection, and the lowest detection limit for Fe3+ is 0.158 μM, which is superior to many other previous related research studies. This pioneering work provides a new idea and method for constructing a dual-emission ratio sensor based on carbon quantum dots and also extends the potential application in the biological and environmental fields.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:In this work, a ratiometric fluorescent probe for Vitamin C (VC) detection was constructed based on water-soluble silicon nanoparticles (SiNPs), o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and MnO2 nanosheets. Firstly, bright blue fluorescent SiNPs with high quantum yield were synthesized by a hydrothermal method using (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) as silicon source and guanine as reducing agent. Then, MnO2 nanosheets with a wide absorption band were prepared. In the sensing system, MnO2 nanosheets play three crucial roles: fluorescence quencher of SiNPs, oxidation OPD to yellow fluorescent 2,3-diaminophenazine (oxOPD) with a emission at 560 nm, and VC recognition. The SiNPs/OPD/MnO2 probe possessed two obvious emission peaks at 465 nm and 560 nm under 405 nm excitation. With the addition of VC, MnO2 nanosheets were reduced, and the fluorescence quenching ability and oxidase-like properties were weakened, thus restricting the production of oxOPD and recovering the fluorescence of SiNPs. Therefore, with the increase of VC concentration, the fluorescence (FL) intensity of the sensing system increased at 465 nm while decreased at 560 nm. Based on this, a ratiometric fluorescence method was established for VC detection by using the FL intensity ratio (F560/F465) as signal readout. The detection range was 0.5-40 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.42 μM. Moreover, the proposed method demonstrated good practicability for VC detection in VC tablets, VC chewable tablets and VC injection with satisfactory recoveries.

Abstract:Vitamin A as a powerful antioxidant plays an important role in human body functions including bone remodeling regulation, healthy immune system and cell growth reproduction. An accurate determination of vitamin A is taken into consideration because of its importance for human health. In this paper, we reported a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) probe, MPS-capped ZnS QDs, for sensitive and selective detection of vitamin A. The colloidal MPS-capped ZnS QDs were prepared from Zinc acetate and sodium sulfide by employing 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPS) molecules as the stabilizer or capping agent at the pH condition of 10. The synthesized MPS-capped ZnS QDs were characterized by means of FT-IR, UV-Vis, DLS, and TEM techniques. The sensing behavior of MPS-capped ZnS QDs for selective and sensitive detection of vitamin A, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, vitamin E, vitamin K, vitamin H, vitamin D3 and vitamin C was investigated using fluorescence spectroscopy. The detection mechanism involves photoinduced charge transfer from the surface of ZnS QDs to Vitamin resulting in the fluorescence quenching of ZnS QDs followed by nonradiative fluorescence resonance energy transfer. An excellent selectivity was observed for vitamin A versus other tested species. A linear relationship was observed between the fluorescence intensity of MPS-capped ZnS QDs and the concentration of vitamin A in the range of 3.33-36.66 μM with detection limit of 1.062 μM.

Abstract:Ratiometric fluorescent sensing based on dual-emitting fluorescent coordination polymers (FL-CPs) has attracted intense attention due to their sensing accuracy and easy visualization when compared with sensing relying solely on monochromatic FL-CPs. In this work, a series of rare-earth metal-based CPs, formuled as [(CH3)2NH2][Ln(bpdc)2] (Ln3+ = Y3+, Eu3+ and Tb3+, H2bpdc = biphenyl-4,4′-dicarboxylic acid), are presented, which show dual emission aroused from the Ln3+ ions and the inefficient intermolecular energy transfer from ligands to Ln3+ metals. For clarity, the as-made Ln-CPs are named Eu-bpdc, Tb-bpdc, and Y-bpdc based on the corresponding Ln3+. Notably, Eu-bpdc, presented as an example, could be used as FL sensing material ratiometric to Fe3+ ions. The ratio of FL intensity of Eu3+ ions to bpdc2− ligands (I415/I615) showed a good linear relationship with the concentrations of Fe3+ ions. Moreover, the detection process could be visibly monitored through a change from purple to blue when Eu-bpdc was used as an FL proble. This work provides a good example for exploring visibly ratiometric sensors based on FL-CPs.

Abstract:Dual-emissive carbon dots (CDs) were fabricated for dual-channel ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and mercury ion (Hg2+) and intracellular imaging. Dual-emissive CDs were synthesized by one-pot solvothermal treatment of cabbage. The CDs exhibited two distinctive fluorescence emissions at 500 and 678 nm under single excitation at 410 nm. The green emission (500 nm) had reversible linear response to pH (7.0–12.0) due to deprotonation and protonation of surface functional groups and their non-covalent interactions. On the other hand, the red emission (678 nm) had efficient and selective fluorescence response to Hg2+ by formation of non-emission complex between CDs and Hg2+. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for Hg2+ were 6.25 and 20.63 nM, respectively. The CDs have been successfully applied for label-free ratiometric fluorometric determination of pH and Hg2+ in fish and human serum samples with good recoveries (92.0–108.3%). In addition, the CDs had excellent photostability, low cytotoxicity, and good biocompatibility for intracellular imaging. All in all, the system was multi-functional in determination, high in sensitivity, and excellent in selectivity, which demonstrated wide and promising applicability for biosensing and bioimaging in the future.

Abstract:Carbon dots have been rapidly developed as a kind of luminescent nanomaterials. However, methods for the synthesis of long-wavelength-emissive carbon dots are still not mature enough. Meanwhile, developing a fast and highly sensitive method to detect residual veterinary drugs in food is particularly significant for food safety. Herein, we report the facile fabrication of red-emissive carbon dots (R-CDs) for ratiometric sensing of veterinary drugs. With use of sorbitol and o-phenylenediamine as precursors, R-CDs was prepared via a one-pot solvothermal approach. The resulting R-CDs show mainly excitation-independent and dual-emissive photoluminescence (PL) located at 597 and 645 nm. Meanwhile, the PL quantum yield (QY) of R-CDs without further surface treatment is 33% under 540 nm excitation. Interestingly, the R-CDs exhibit fast fluorescence response to malachite green oxalate (MG oxalate), 1-aminohydantoin hydrochloride (AHD) and pefloxacin, which are abused widely and retained easily in animals. Ratiometric sensing of these veterinary drugs were successfully performed taking the advantage of dual-emissive PL property; the detection limits of MG oxalate, AHD and pefloxacin were 0.79, 0.25 and 0.85 μM, respectively.

Abstract:Due to the biochemical and pharmacological activities, the convenient and effective detection of quercetin (Qc) is very important for biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry and clinical medicine. A kind of non-conjugated polymer dots (NCPDs) was used as a versatile and sensitive dual-mode optical output for Qc detection, which was synthesized by hyperbranched poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) and l-threonine via environmentallyfriendly way. The dual-mode method proposed in this work had high sensitivity and definiteselectivity for Qc detection. Additionally, it was convenient for the naked eyes to observe the fluorescence brightness and color change.
