Abstract:Considering the superior performances of MOF-based and MoS2-based materials, a flower-like FeS/MoS2 composite is synthetized using MIL-100(Fe) as a precursor. Electronic density of states and band structure are simulated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which prove that FeS/MoS2 heterostructure exhibits metallic behavior. Unique structure and powerful hetero-interface synergistic effect of FeS/MoS2 is conducive to improve the stability of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). It provides reversible capacities of 464 and 365 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 and 1.0 A g(-1). When the current density increases to 5 A g(-1), FeS/MoS2 delivers a high capacity of 325 mA h g(-1) with a capacity retention rate (71.1%). Moreover, it can maintain a stable specific capacity of 331 mA h g(-1) at 2.0 A g(-1) after 200 cycles. Adsorption energy calculated by DFT indicates that more Na atoms may be trapped on the top of Mo atom between FeS and MoS2 layers. This study may stimulate the interesting of multivariate-MOFs/covalent organic frameworks (COFs) composite emerging two-dimensional materials and facilitate the application of composite electrode in high-performance SIBs. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) heterostructured materials, combining the collective advantages of individual building blocks and synergistic properties, have spurred great interest as a new paradigm in materials science. The family of 2D transition-metal carbides and nitrides, MXenes, has emerged as an attractive platform to construct functional materials with enhanced performance for diverse applications. Here, we synthesized 2D MoS2 -on-MXene heterostructures through in situ sulfidation of Mo2 TiC2 Tx MXene. The computational results show that MoS2 -on-MXene heterostructures have metallic properties. Moreover, the presence of MXene leads to enhanced Li and Li2 S adsorption during the intercalation and conversion reactions. These characteristics render the as-prepared MoS2 -on-MXene heterostructures stable Li-ion storage performance. This work paves the way to use MXene to construct 2D heterostructures for energy storage applications.
Assembled Graphene Nanotubes Decorated by Hierarchical MoS2 Structures: Enhanced Lithium Storage and in Situ TEM Lithiation Study

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Currently, the specific capacity and cycling performance of various MoS2/carbon-based anode materials for Na-ion storage are far from satisfactory due to the insufficient structural stability of the electrode, incomplete protection of MoS2 by carbon, difficult access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, as well as inactivity of the adopted carbon matrix. To address these issues, this work presents the rational design and synthesis of 3D interconnected and hollow nanocables composed of multiwalled carbon@MoS2@carbon. In this architecture, (i) the 3D nanoweb-like structure brings about excellent mechanical property of the electrode, (ii) the ultrathin MoS2 nanosheets are sandwiched between and doubly protected by two layers of porous carbon, (iii) the hollow structure of the primary nanofibers facilitates the access of electrolyte to the electrode interior, (iv) the porous and nitrogen-doping properties of the two carbon materials lead to synergistic Na-storage of carbon and MoS2. As a result, this hybrid material as the anode material of Na-ion battery exhibits fast chargetransfer reaction, high utilization efficiency, and ultrastability. Outstanding reversible capacity (1045 mAh g(-1)), excellent rate behavior (817 mAh g(-1) at 7000 mA g(-1)), and good cycling performance (747 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 700 mA g(-1)) are obtained.
MoS2 spheres covered with few layers of MXene as a high-performance anode for sodium-ion batteries

Abstract:As a kind of anode material with high theoretical sodium storage capacity for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs), MoS2 has been widely studied. However, its low conductivity and large volume change hamper its application in SIBs. Herein, 3D-MoS2 microspheres were first synthesized through the sulfidation of molybdenyl acetylacetonate by solvothermal method and then successfully covered with few layers of MXene nanosheets by the electrostatic assembly method. The ratio of MoS2 to MXene was also investigated. The obtained 3D-MXene@MoS2 composite has the high specific surface area due to its porous and non-stacked structure which are benefit to enhance the ion and electron diffusion kinetics in SIBs. Therefore, the 3D-MXene@MoS2 composite has a specific capacity of 257.8 mAh·g-1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A·g-1, a capacity retention of up to 95.7%, and excellent rate performance (220.8 mAh·g-1 at 5 A·g-1).

Vertically Aligned MoS2 Nanosheets Patterned on Electrochemically Exfoliated Graphene for High-Performance Lithium and Sodium Storage

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has been recognized as a promising anode material for high-energy Li-ion (LIBs) and Na-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its apparently high capacity and intriguing 2D-layered structure. The low conductivity, unsatisfied mechanical stability, and limited active material utilization are three key challenges associated with MoS2 electrodes especially at high current rates and mass active material loading. Here, vertical MoS2 nanosheets are controllably patterned onto electrochemically exfoliated graphene (EG). Within the achieved hierarchical architecture, the intimate contact between EG and MoS2 nanosheets, interconnected network, and effective exposure of active materials by vertical channels simultaneously overcomes the above three problems, enabling high mechanical integrity and fast charge transport kinetics. Serving as anode material for LIBs, EG-MoS2 with 95 wt% MoS2 content delivered an ultrahigh-specific capacity of 1250 mA h g(-1) after 150 stable cycles at 1 A g(-1), which is among the highest values in all reported MoS2 electrodes, and excellent rate performance (970 mA h g(-1) at 5 A g(-1)). Moreover, impressive cycling stability (509 mA h g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) after 250 cycles) and rate capability (423 mA h g(-1) at 2 A g(-1)) were also achieved for SIBs. The area capacities reached 1.27 and 0.49 mA h cm(-2) at approximate to 1 mA cm(-2) for LIBs and SIBs, respectively. This work may inspire the development of new 2D hierarchical structures for high efficiency energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:The search for earth-abundant and high-performance electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries represents an important challenge to current battery research. 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, particularly MoS2, have attracted increasing attention recently, but few of them so far have been able to meet expectations. In this study, it is demonstrated that another phase of molybdenum sulfide-amorphous chain-like MoS3-can be a better choice as the anode material of sodium-ion batteries. Highly compact MoS3 particles infiltrated with carbon nanotubes are prepared via the facile acid precipitation method in ethylene glycol. Compared to crystalline MoS2, the resultant amorphous MoS3 not only exhibits impressive gravimetric performance-featuring excellent specific capacity (approximate to 615 mA h g(-1)), rate capability (235 mA h g(-1) at 20 A g(-1)), and cycling stability but also shows exceptional volumetric capacity of approximate to 1000 mA h cm(-3) and an areal capacity of >6.0 mA h cm(-2) at very high areal loadings of active materials (up to 12 mg cm(-2)). The experimental results are supported by density functional theory simulations showing that the 1D chains of MoS3 can facilitate the adsorption and diffusion of Na+ ions. At last, it is demonstrated that the MoS3 anode can be paired with an Na3V2(PO4)(3) cathode to afford full cells with great capacity and cycling performance.
Improved ion adsorption capacities and diffusion dynamics in surface anchored MoS 2 ⊥Mo 4/3 B 2 and MoS 2 ⊥Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 heterostructures as the anodes for alkaline metal ion batteries

Abstract:The first-principles calculations are performed on the atomic structures and electrochemical energy storage properties of the novel MoS 2 ⊥Boridene heterostructures by anchoring MoS 2 nanoflake on the Mo 4/3 B 2 and Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 monolayers. Both thermodynamic and thermal stabilities of each heterostructure are thoroughly evaluated from the obtained binding energies and the first-principles molecular dynamics simulations at room temperature, confirming the high formability of the heterostructures. The electrochemical properties of MoS 2 ⊥Mo 4/3 B 2 and MoS 2 ⊥Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 heterostructures are investigated for their potential use as the anodes for alkaline metal ion batteries (Li + , Na + and K + ). It is revealed that Li + and Na + can form the multiple stable full adsorption layers on both heterostructures, and K + only forms a single full adsorption layer. The presence of the negative electron cloud (NEC) contributes to the stabilization of a multi-layer adsorption mechanism. For all investigated alkaline metal ions, the predicted ion diffusion dynamics is relative sluggish for the absorbates in the first full adsorption layer on MoS 2 ⊥Boridene heterostructures due the relatively large migration energies (> 0.50 eV), compared to that of second or third full adsorbate layers (< 0.30 eV). The MoS 2 ⊥Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 exhibits higher both onset and mean open circuit voltages as the anodes for alkaline metal ion batteries than those of MoS 2 ⊥Mo 4/3 B 2 hybrid because of the enhanced interactions between absorbate and the Mo 4/3 B 2 O 2 monolayer with the presence of O-terminations. Tailoring the size and the horizontal spacing between two neighboring MoS 2 nano-flakes of heterostructures lead to high theoretical capacities for LIB (531 mAh/g), SIB (300 mAh/g) and PIB (131 mAh/g) in the current study.

Abstract:Despite the outstanding theoretical capacities of two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) with low costs, its low conductivity and easy agglomeration greatly impede the business application as anode materials. The heterostructures between 2D MoS2 and Ti3C2 MXene are able to combine the collective superiorities of MoS2 and Ti3C2, thus greatly ameliorating the electrical conductivity and rate capacity through synergistic effects. Herein, we design a simple intercalation–sulfidation strategy for the construction of the TH MoS2/Ti3C2 heterostructures with a compact stacking lamellar structure and investigate the electrochemical sodium storage properties of the composite. In the architecture, fallen leaf-like MoS2 nanosheets with a mixed-phase crystal containing 1T and 2H phases grow tightly on the surface and interlayer of Ti3C2 matrixes. The expanded layer spacing of Ti3C2 as a result of MoS2 insertion can greatly accelerate electronic/sodium ion transport. Meanwhile, 2D Ti3C2 can serve as a strong mechanical support for the composite electrode to provide a buffer space for volume expansion and avoid structural collapse during cycles. Benefiting from these structural advantages, the TH MoS2/Ti3C2 anode reveals higher sodium storage capacity of 743.6 mAh g–1 than bare MoS2 (579.4 mAh g–1) at 0.2 A g–1. Furthermore, the anode exhibits significantly improved battery rate performance with a high sodium storage capacity of 653.3, 539.1, 512.1, 488.7, 439.3, and 586.7 mAh g–1 at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, and 0.2 A g–1. Our study provides a unique synthesis route to construct layered heterostructure composites by artificial stacking of different types of 2D materials, which are considered as highly promising electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs).

Abstract:Molybedenum disulfide (MoS2) is regarded as a promising anode material for next-generation sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity. However, its low conductivity, large volume changes, and undesirable phase transformation hinder its practical applications. In this study, we synthesize a hierarchically designed core-shell heterostructure based on nitrogen-doped MoS2/C and silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) (N-MoS2/C@SiOC) via the facile pyrolysis of a suspension of an N-MoS2/polyfurfural precursor in silicone oil. The in situ nitrogen doping in a two-dimensional MoS2 structure with carbon incorporation leads to the enlargement of the interlayer spacing and enhancement of the electronic conductivity and mechanical stability, which allows the facile, highly reversible insertion and extraction of sodium ions upon cycling. Further, the nanoscale SiOC shell with surface capacitive reactivity provides a conductive pathway, preventing unfavorable side reactions at the electrode/electrolyte interface and acting as a structure-reinforcing buffer against severe volume expansion issues. As a result, the N-MoS2/C@SiOC composite exhibits high reversible capacity (540.7 mAh g-1), high-capacity retention (>100% after 200 cycles), and excellent rate capability up to 10 A g-1. The simple hierarchical core-shell design strategy developed in this study allows for the fabrication of high-performance metal sulfide anodes as well as other high-capacity anode materials for energy storage applications.

Uniform Yolk-Shell MoS 2 @Carbon Microsphere Anodes for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:As an electrode material for lithium-ion batteries LIBs), MoS2 has attracted much attention because of its high capacity and low cost. However, the rational design of a novel electrode structure with a high capacity, fast charge/discharge rate, and long cycling lifetime remains a great challenge. Herein, a environmentally friendly etching strategy is reported for the construction of monodisperse, inner void-controlled yolk-shell MoS2@ carbon microspheres. The resulting anode reveals an initial discharge capacity up to 1813 mA hg(-1), a high reversible capacity 1016 mA hg(-1)), excellent cycling stability 200 cycles), and superior rate performance. Such microspheres consist of nanosized MoS2 yolks approximate to 280 nm), porous carbon shells approximate to 25 nm) and wellcontrolled internal voids in between, opening a new pathway for the optimization of the electrochemical properties of MoS2-based anodes without sacrificing their capacity. In addition, this etching strategy offers a new method for the development of functional, hollow MoS2-based composites.
Ti3C2Tx MXenes Bonded MoS2 Nanosheets for Superior Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have evolved into the most potential alternatives to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) especially for large-scale energy storage applications. However, the large radius of sodium ion inevitably causes large volume change and sluggish ion diffusion kinetics. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as a rising star of anode for SIBs has raised concern because of its high theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, MoS2 suffers from low electronic conductivity and serious re-stacking, resulting in declined cycling stability and poor rate capability. Herein, we reported an electrostatic self-assembly process to synthesize three-dimensional (3D) crumpled MXene-bonded MoS2 nanosheets. The MoS2/MXene heterostructure not only avoids the serious self-aggregation of MoS2 nanoparticles but only maintains the chemical and mechanical stability of MoS2/MXene hybrids during sodiation and desodiation. Strong chemical interactions were validated on the interface of MXene and MoS2, favoring fast charge transfer kinetics and durable structural stability. The developed MoS2/MXene electrode exhibits a high specific capacity (509 mAh g-1 at 0.05 A g-1) and con-siderable cyclability (326 mAh g-1 at 1 A g-1 after 900 cycles), manifesting a promising application prospect for SIBs. Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are considered promising low-cost alternatives to prevailing lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The inherently sluggish kinetics of their anode materials, however, poses a great challenge to the SIBs' rate capabilities. This work reports the synthesis of novel MoS2/Carbon (MoS2/C) microspheres with three-dimensional (3D) architecture as an anode for SIBs using a facile hydrothermal strategy. The MoS2/C electrode delivers a reversible capacity of 498 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1), which stabilizes at 450 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles. Even at 4 A g(-1), the electrode maintains a high reversible capacity above 310 mA h g(-1) after 600 cycles, demonstrating its superior rate capability and long-term cyclic stability. Quantitative kinetics analysis reveals a pseudocapacitance-dominated Na+ storage mechanism, especially at high current densities. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the Na transport rates are faster through the MoS2/C heterointerface, due to a low diffusion energy barrier, than along the MoS2/MoS2 bilayers.

Abstract:As one of the stellar 2D materials, MoS2 remains in the spotlight for its multiple physical and chemical traits that contribute to its high theoretical capacity. But its potential as anode for lithium-ion batteries is hampered by its poor electrical conductivity and its low mechanical stability after cycling. In our research work, we manage to correct these flaws by fabricating MoS2 nanosheets with a physically-lengthened interlayer space through simple plasma evaporation and a gas–solid reaction at a low temperature. The as-synthesized MoS2 nanosheets are uniform, with a BET surface area of 80.42 m2 g−1 and an expanded interlayer distance of 0.702 nm. This material exhibits a high capacity of 860 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1, a great rate capability, and stability. Its outstanding electrochemical performance is encouraged by the improved ion conductivity of the enlarged interlayers due to two factors: 1) affording plenty of active Li+ storage sites for fast intercalation/de-intercalation, avoiding sluggish transport, and 2) low energy barrier for reversible lithium insertion at high current densities. The structural configuration is well maintained even after the structure modification during long cycling, where the pulverized Mo nanoparticles are uniformly distributed.

The MoS2/CoS2 composite is derived by the sulfidation of a guest/host precursor of PMo12O40 3− anion-intercalated Co(OH)2 via an interlayer nanoconfinement effect. Electrochemical testing demonstrates that the carbon-free MoS2/CoS2 composite exhibits a high capacity of 396.6 mA h g−1 after 80 cycles at 0.1 A g−1, and retains a decent reversible capacity of 203.8 mA h g−1 after 300 cycles at 0.5 A g−1. The result shows that our gest/host precursor-based synthesis strategy may open up an effective approach to prepare well-dispersed nanostructural composites for SIBs.

Abstract:Layered metal sulfides are potential anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because their unique structure makes them suitable for Li+ de-intercalation. As a typical 2D layered material, MoS2 is a potential anode material for LIBs due to the weak van der Waals forces between the layers, which facilitates the deintercalation of Li+ and supports multiple Li+. However, when MoS2 is used as anodes for LIBs material, rapid capacity decay hinders the application. Coupling two different materials to form a heterogeneous structure is an effective way to solve the above problems. In this work, one-pot hydrothermal method is proposed to construct MoS2/SnS heterostructure composites. The electrochemical properties are significantly enhanced, which could be attributed to the presence of heterogeneous structures, leading to increase the electrode charge transfer rate and interfacial reaction kinetics. The results show that the discharge capacity of the MoS2/SnS-1.5 electrode is about 1492.1 mAh/g at 500 mA/g. Furthermore, assembled MoS2@SnS-1.5||LiCoO2 full cell displays a high discharge capacity of 226.1 mAh/g after 50 cycles at 500 mA/g. This facile method provides the application value of layered metal sulfides as LIBs anode materials.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology, due to the abundance of sodium resources. The major drawbacks for the commercial application of SIBs lie in the slow kinetic processes and poor energy density of the devices. Molybdenum sulfide (MoS2), a graphene-like material, is becoming a promising anode material for SIBs, because of its high theoretical capacity (670 mAh g-1) and layered structure that suitable for Na+ intercalation/extraction. However, the intrinsic properties of MoS2, such as low conductivity, slow Na+ diffusion kinetics and large volume change during charging/discharging, restrict its rate capability and cycle stability. Here, molybdenum disulfide and graphene oxide (3D MoS2/GO) with excellent conductivity were fabricated through layer-by-layer method using amino-functionalized SiO2 nanospheres as templates. The 3D MoS2/GO composite demonstrates excellent cycling stability and capacity of 525 mA h g-1 at 500 mA g-1 after 100 cycles, which mainly due to the integrated MoS2/GO components and unique 3D macroporous structure, facilitating the material conductivity and Na+ diffusion rate, while tolerating the volume expansion of MoS2 during the charge/discharge processes.

Abstract:Owing to the abundance and low price of sodium, researches on sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as a lithium-ion battery (LIB) alternative are emerging as a consensus. It is crucial to develop electrode materials suitable for sodium storage. In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) layered transition metal disulfide compounds (TMDs) have trigered interest in the realm of energy and environmental fields. In particular, MoSe2 is thought to be a suitable material for SIBs due to its wide original layer spacing and high conductivity. Herein, N-doped dual carbon-coated MoSe2 with multichannel paths (MoSe2/multichannel carbon nanofibers (MCFs)@NC) is fabricated via electrospinning, followed by a selenation and carbonization process. The existence of a 3D conductive network, abundant void spaces, and sufficient electron transportation pathways are conducive to rapid and fast charge transfer kinetics under volume expansion stress. When applied in SIBs, the MoSe2/MCFs@NC shows a high capability (319 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1), as well as good cycling stability (303 mA h g−1 after 1100 cycles at 10 A g−1). Furthermore, coupled with the Na3V2(PO4)2O2F cathode, the full cell also exhibits excellent performance. The theoretical calculation of the MoSe2/MCFs@NC confirms that the superiority of its SIB performance is owing to the strong interaction between the double-doped carbon and MoSe2. This scheme provides a wide space for preparing high-performance electrode materials for SIBs.

Abstract:Metallic phase (1T) MoS2 has attracted enormous attention as an appealing energy storage material for batteries, supercapacitors, and catalysts. However, a facile fabrication method is lacking and the intensive understanding of its sodium storage mechanism is absent. Herein, ultrathin 1T MoS2 nanosheets (1-2 layers) are directly fabricated via and are investigated as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries. Interestingly, the as-prepared 1T MoS2 nanosheets demonstrate a high reversible capacity of 450 mAh g(-1) at 50 mA g(-1) and outstanding cycling stability with a high capacity retention ratio of 94% after 200 cycles at 1 A g(-1), which is far superior to that of the 2H phase counterpart. Density function theory (DFT) calculations show that, in addition to significantly enhanced electronic conductivity, 1T MoS2 also possesses much more sodium philicity and faster Na atom mobility in comparison with the 2H phase. More importantly, as revealed by ex-situ Raman, in-situ X-ray diffraction, and DFT calculations, the 1T MoS2 is more capable of suppressing the dissolution of S species from the material structure compared with the 2H phase, leading to excellent cycling stability. The facile and easily scalable method as well as the deep mechanism analysis will provide a very important reference for the development of high-performance MoS2 anodes and other SIB electrode materials.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries have emerged as a desired alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) on account of their low cost, good safety, and large reserves of sodium in the earth's crust. The sodium storage capabilities of batteries significatnly depend on the structure and composition of electrode materials. Herein, a new type of C,N-codoped MoS2 nanoonions with ultralarge interlayer spacing of 1.16 nm has been successfully fabricated by vapor phase sulfuration of the as prepared PPy-PMo12 precursor at an optimized vulcanization temperature. More importantly, the delicate internal nanostructure has been directly observed via electron tomography (ET) technique and 3D reconstruction. Thanks to the structure and composition merits, the resulting anode materials of C/N-MoS2-800 delivers remarkable sodium storage properties. The reversible capacity retains 617.7 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) after 200 cycles. The electrochemical kinetic analysis and density functional theory (DFF) calculations further comfirm that the expanded interlayer distance and C,N-codoping of MoS2 nanosheets promote the superior Na+ intercalation/deintercalation kinetics. In turn, the resulted pseudocapacitance-dominated electrochemical behavior also enables the superior rate capability.
