Abstract:In the present article, a relatively very new technique, coupled fractional reduced differential transform, has been implemented to obtain the approximate numerical solution of 1 + 1 dimensional coupled time fractional Burger equations. The fractional derivatives are described in the Caputo sense. By using the present method, we can solve many linear and non-linear coupled fractional differential equations. The obtained results are compared with the exact solutions. Numerical solutions are presented graphically to show the reliability and efficiency of the method.
Adaptive Clutter Filtering for Ultrafast Doppler Imaging of Blood Flow Using Fast Multivariate Empirical Mode Decomposition

Abstract:The rapid development of ultrafast ultrasound imaging based on the unfocused transmission of plane-wave has led to the widespread attention of clutter filtering technology, since the discrimination between tissue and blood motion is critical for non-contrast ultrafast Doppler imaging of blood flow. The increasingly used clutter filtering method, i.e., the singular value decomposition (SVD) is essentially a black-box technique, and the direct rejection of any singular vector corresponding to the first singular values will result in the potential loss of blood flow or residue of tissue activities. To cater for a better filtering performance, an adaptive clutter rejection method based on the fast multivariate empirical mode decomposition (FMEMD) is proposed, and compared to the high-pass filter (HPF) and SVD in the task of performing blood flow imaging and velocity profile estimation on signals collected from carotid arteries of 10 healthy human subjects. The results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over the state-of-the-art techniques, especially for discriminating between blood flow and tissue signals near the vessel walls.
A Method to Avoid the Cycle-Skip Phenomenon in Time-of-flight Determination for Ultrasonic Flow Measurement

Abstract:The double-threshold method has been widely used in ultrasonic flow measurement to determine time-of-flight (TOF) due to its low cost and ease of implementation. Performance of this method is negatively affected by the cycle-skip phenomenon which occurs frequently under inconstant working conditions, especially varied fluid temperature. This paper proposes a method to suppress the phenomenon to facilitate reliable determination of TOF in ultrasonic flow measurement. First, the double-threshold method is used to generate a feature point to segment the signal. Second, based on the correlation coefficient and signal power, judgement factors of individual signal periods are calculated to determine signal onset. Finally, a valid zero crossing which has a constant lag from the onset is selected to determine the TOF. Thus, the cycle-skip phenomenon is suppressed. Two additional modifications are proposed to eliminate the influence of varied signal frequency and low sampling rate. The proposed method was validated by an experiment based on an ultrasonic water flow sensor. Results showed that the frequently appearing cycle-skip phenomenon can be successfully suppressed by the proposed method.
Improvement in Multi-Angle Plane Wave Image Quality Using Minimum Variance Beamforming with Adaptive Signal Coherence

Abstract:For ultrasound multi-angle plane wave (PW) imaging, the coherent PW compounding (CPWC) method provides limited image quality because of its conventional delay-and-sum beamforming. The delay-multiply-and-sum (DMAS) method is a coherence-based algorithm that improves image quality by introducing signal coherence among either receiving channels or PW transmit angles into the image output. The degree of signal coherence in DMAS is conventionally a global value for the entire image and thus the image resolution and contrast in the target region improves at the cost of speckle quality in the background region. In this study, the adaptive DMAS (ADMAS) is proposed such that the degree of signal coherence relies on the local characteristics of the image region to maintain the background speckle quality and the corresponding contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Subsequently, the ADMAS algorithm is further combined with minimum variance (MV) beamforming to increase the image resolution. The optimal MV estimation is determined to be in the direction of the PW transmit angle (Tx) for multi-angle PW imaging. Our results show that, using the PICMUS dataset, TxMV-ADMAS beamforming significantly improves the image quality compared with CPWC. When the p value is globally fixed to 2 as in conventional DMAS, though the main-lobe width and the image contrast in the experiments improve from 0.57 mm and 27.0 dB in CPWC, respectively, to 0.24 mm and 38.0 dB, the corresponding CNR decreases from 12.8 to 11.3 due to the degraded speckle quality. With the proposed ADMAS algorithm, however, the adaptive p value in DMAS beamforming helps to restore the CNR value to the same level of CPWC while the improvement in image resolution and contrast remains evident.

Abstract:Ultrafast power Doppler imaging (uPDI) technique was recently proposed and developed to imaging microvessels for new insights into disease diagnosis. Ultrafast plane wave imaging increases the frame rate to more than 1 kHz, paving the way for uPDI. However, the imaging quality of uPDI is poor due to the unfocused transmission of plane waves, which may affect the diagnosis accuracy based on microvessels. Coherence factor (CF) is a classical adaptive beamformer by utilizing the spatial coherence of signals across channels. In this study, we propose a spatial and angular coherence factor (SACF) beamformer for improved uPDI, which considers the spatial coherence between channels and the angular coherence between different transmit angles sequentially. In-vivo results in contrast-free and contrast-enhanced conditions show the superiority of the proposed SACF method over the conventional delay-and-sum (DAS) and CF beamformers, in terms of improved contrast and resolution, and reduced background noise.
High-Quality Ultrafast Power Doppler Imaging Based on Spatial Angular Coherence Factor

Abstract:The morphological and hemodynamic changes of microvessels are demonstrated to be related to the diseased conditions in tissues. Ultrafast power Doppler imaging (uPDI) is a novel modality with a significantly increased Doppler sensitivity, benefiting from the ultrahigh frame rate plane-wave imaging (PWI) and advanced clutter filtering. However, unfocused plane-wave transmission often leads to a low imaging quality, which degrades the subsequent microvascular visualization in power Doppler imaging. Coherence factor (CF)-based adaptive beamformers have been widely studied in conventional B-mode imaging. In this study, we propose a spatial and angular coherence factor (SACF) beamformer for improved uPDI (SACF-uPDI) by calculating the spatial CF across apertures and the angular CF across transmit angles, respectively. To identify the superiority of SACF-uPDI, simulations, in vivo contrast-enhanced rat kidney, and in vivo contrast-free human neonatal brain studies were conducted. Results demonstrate that SACF-uPDI can effectively enhance contrast and resolution and suppress background noise simultaneously, compared with conventional uPDI methods based on delay-and-sum (DAS) (DAS-uPDI) and CF (CF-uPDI). In the simulations, SACF-uPDI can improve the lateral and axial resolutions compared with those of DAS-uPDI, from 176 to [Formula: see text] of lateral resolution, and from 111 to [Formula: see text] of axial resolution. In the in vivo contrast-enhanced experiments, SACF achieves 15.14- and 5.6-dB higher contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), 15.25- and 3.68-dB lower noise power, and 240- and 15- [Formula: see text] narrower full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) than DAS-uPDI and CF-uPDI, respectively. In the in vivo contrast-free experiments, SACF achieves 6.11- and 1.09-dB higher CNR, 11.93- and 4.01-dB lower noise power, and 528- and 160- [Formula: see text] narrower FWHM than DAS-uPDI and CF-uPDI, respectively. In conclusion, the proposed SACF-uPDI method can efficiently improve the microvascular imaging quality and has the potential to facilitate clinical applications.

Abstract:Ultrafast power Doppler imaging (uPDI) using high-frame-rate plane-wave transmission is a new microvascular imaging modality that offers high Doppler sensitivity. However, due to the unfocused transmission of plane waves, the echo signal is subject to interference from noise and clutter, resulting in a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and poor image quality. Adaptive beamforming techniques are effective in suppressing noise and clutter for improved image quality. In this study, an adaptive beamformer based on a united spatial-angular adaptive scaling Wiener (uSA-ASW) postfilter is proposed to improve the resolution and contrast of uPDI. In the proposed method, the signal power and noise power of the Wiener postfilter are estimated by uniting spatial and angular signals, and a united generalized coherence factor (uGCF) is introduced to dynamically adjust the noise power estimation and enhance the robustness of the method. Simulation and in vivo data were used to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the uSA-ASW can achieve higher resolution and significant improvements in image contrast and background noise suppression compared with conventional delay-and-sum (DAS), coherence factor (CF), spatial-angular CF (SACF), and adaptive scaling Wiener (ASW) postfilter methods. In the simulations, uSA-ASW improves contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) by 34.7 dB (117.3%) compared with DAS, while reducing background noise power (BNP) by 52 dB (221.4%). The uSA-ASW method provides full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) reductions of [Formula: see text] (59.5%) and [Formula: see text] (56.9%), CNR improvements of 25.6 dB (199.9%) and 42 dB (253%), and BNP reductions of 46.1 dB (319.3%) and 12.9 dB (289.1%) over DAS in the experiments of contrast-free human neonatal brain and contrast-free human liver, respectively. In the contrast-free experiments, uSA-ASW effectively balances the performance of noise and clutter suppression and enhanced microvascular visualization. Overall, the proposed method has the potential to become a reliable microvascular imaging technique for aiding in more accurate diagnosis and detection of vascular-related diseases in clinical contexts.
Regional-Lag Signed Delay Multiply and Sum Beamforming in Ultrafast Ultrasound Imaging

Abstract:Ultrafast ultrasound imaging provides very high frame rates but provides poor imaging quality due to unfocused beams. The delay multiply and sum (DMAS) beamformer has been used to improve ultrafast ultrasound imaging contrast but is always accompanied by oversuppression, which produces low-quality speckle images and degrades the contrast performance. A smaller maximum lag in the signed DMAS (sDMAS) contributes better speckle preservation but lower resolution for hyperechoic scatters. To overcome this tradeoff, a regional-lag signed delay multiply and sum (rsDMAS) beamformer is proposed in this article. Innovatively, a region discrimination tool realized by the generalized coherence factor (GCF) is used to limit the maximum lag for spatial coherence estimation. Subaperture coherence smoothing estimates the short-lag coherence instead of multiplication in pairs, thereby reducing calculation complexity and smoothing the speckle texture. Normalization and sign correction are also introduced to achieve better beamforming output. The simulated, phantom, and in vivo data are adopted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed beamformer. Numerical results show that the proposed method achieves improvements of the contrast ratio (CR) by 9%, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) by 41%, speckle signal-to-noise ratio (sSNR) by 41%, and generalized contrast-to-noise ratio (gCNR) by 0.0004 compared with DMAS (in simulation). Resolution experiments show that the proposed method obtains a loss of 0.07 mm in the full width at half maximum (FWHM) and the same separability of close point scatters as DMAS. These findings indicate that the proposed method achieves higher contrast performance at less obvious sacrifice of the lateral resolution than DMAS.
A Nonlinear Beamforming for Enhanced Spatiotemporal Sensitivity in High Frame Rate Ultrasound Flow Imaging

Abstract:Typically, an ultrasound flow imaging system employs the conventional delay and sum (DAS) beamformer due to its inherent low complexity. But the conventional DAS technique offers poor contrast, low imaging resolution, and limited spatiotemporal sensitivity. This article attempts to improve the spatiotemporal sensitivity of conventional flow imaging with a novel multiply and sum based nonlinear high-resolution (NLHR) beamforming approach. The major advantages of the proposed beamformer are the harmonic generation and the enhanced coherence in beamformed signals that improve the spatiotemporal sensitivity towards flow transients. We demonstrate the proposed beamformer for a directional cross-correlation as well as an autocorrelation based velocity estimator with simulated parabolic flow profiles of different velocities and flow directions, an in-vitro rotating disk dataset, and pulsatile flow experiments. The sensitivity of NLHR beamforming towards the flow transients is validated in-vitro with a sudden reversal of flow direction and air bubble tracking experiments. The comparison between the time-frequency plots of DAS and NLHR beamforming indicates that the impulsive spatiotemporal changes induced by the flow of air bubbles are clearly characterized by nonlinear beamforming than that of DAS beamforming. Furthermore, better spatiotemporal velocity tracking of a single air bubble and a clear distinguishability between the tracking of two proximal air bubbles are observed in-vitro. Preliminary studies on the in-vivo carotid data also show comparable, if not better, results than that of the DAS algorithm. Abstract:Abstract Coherent plane-wave compounding (CPWC) has gained significant traction in medical ultrasound imaging. The coherence factor (CF) weighting algorithm, a classical adaptive beamforming strategy, aims to enhance the CPWC imaging lateral resolution, but it also noticeably compromises the speckle patterns, particularly.at a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Delay multiply and sum (DMAS) has been proposed to reduce side lobes. However, the reconstructed image quality with DMAS is limited in terms of resolution and speckle level. In the present study, an improved subarray coherence factor (ISCF) algorithm is introduced by combining CF with DMAS strategies, aiming to improve the contrast and resolution while preserving the speckle level. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated using simulation and phantom datasets. Results indicate that the resolution and the contrast of ISCF can be improved by 41.6% and 79.4%, respectively; compared with delay and sum (DAS) algorithm. Additionally, the resolution and the speckle level of ISCF can be improved by 10.6% and 35.7% compared with CF algorithm, respectively. The proposed ISCF algorithm outperforms CF in terms of resolution, contrast, and speckle preservation.
Multi-Angle Emission and Cross-Correlation Based Ultrafast Doppler and Functional Ultrasound Imaging

Abstract:Detecting small blood flow signals presents a significant challenge in ultrasound Doppler imaging, emphasizing the necessity for improved imaging sensitivity and effective noise reduction strategies. Recent developments in ultrafast ultrasound Doppler flow imaging, based on multi-angle planewave coherent compounding, have overcome the framerate limitations of traditional focused ultrasound imaging, enabling high-sensitivity imaging of small blood flows. The evolution of planewave imaging modalities also demands new approaches for ultrasound noise reduction. Utilizing the strong coherence of blood flow signals from different tilted planewave emissions, we perform a noise suppression method that divides the planewave signals into two subgroups based on the sign of their tilting angles, and performs a cross-correlation operation after clutter filtering to produce noise-reduced power Doppler images of blood flow. Experimental evaluations involving rat cerebral blood flow and functional imaging reveal that the method can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio of blood flow images by approximately 15 dB. Furthermore, it significantly enhances the sensitivity of ultrafast ultrasound functional brain imaging.
High Spatiotemporal Resolution Contrast-Free Ultrasound Microvascular Imaging Using Adaptive Weight-Based Nonlinear Compounding

Abstract:Simultaneously improving the spatial and temporal resolution of ultrafast power Doppler imaging (UPDI) is conducive to monitoring rapid changes in microvascular morphology and dynamics and increasing quantification accuracy. Grouped angle singular value decomposition (GA-SVD) has been studied to suppress clutter at enhanced temporal resolution, but it struggles to remove spatially varying noise. This study presents an adaptive weight-based nonlinear compounding method called generalized frame-multiply-and-sum (FMAS) factor based on pth root compression (p-GFMAS) to address the above legacy noise and improve the spatial resolution of UPDI at better temporal resolution. p-GFMAS utilizes angular coherence extracted based on the autocorrelation function to emphasize coherent blood signals and suppress incoherent noise, where the adaptive effect is adjusted by p-value. The effectiveness of the p-GFMAS in improving spatial resolution was verified through simulations. And the superiority of the p-GFMAS united with GA-SVD in enhancing spatiotemporal resolution was validated with in vivo studies. Simulation results demonstrated that p-GFMAS outperforms other compounding methods, and p-GFMAS increased the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 22.77 dB (234%) and reduced the full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) by m (43.4%) over traditional coherent compounding (CC). Rat brain and human liver results depicted that p-GFMAS united with GA-SVD achieved highest image quality when using shorter ensembles due to the increased SNR and reduced FWHM. Dynamic results further revealed the ability of the united method to capture flow-dynamics of the rat brain at a frame rate of 20 Hz. Overall, p-GFMAS united with GA-SVD realizes high spatiotemporal resolution contrast-free microvascular visualization, facilitating an understanding of the mechanisms of various physiological and pathological processes.

Abstract:Delay and Sum (DAS) beamforming is a conventional but non-adaptive method for ultrasound imaging. Recently, some researchers have proposed an adaptive Delay Multiply and Sum (DMAS) beamforming algorithm using linear scan transmitting with better imaging quality. Meanwhile, plane wave transmitting has garnered increased attention due to its improvement in the frame rate. Improving the performance of beamformers with plane wave transmitting has been widely studied. In order to achieve a higher imaging quality in plane wave ultrasound imaging systems, an effective ultrasound imaging method combining DMAS and chirp-coded excitation is proposed in this paper, which has a better performance under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) circumstances. We adopt the DMAS method to the plane wave transmitting mode so as to improve the contrast of the plane wave DAS method. A chirp-coded waveform is transmitted to enhance the robustness against low SNR. Simulated and experimental data are used to reconstruct the image. To prove the validity of this method, different SNRs are tested with simulated data. The results demonstrate that the proposed method can maintain a high contrast even with low SNR echo wave signals.
Higher-order Cross-Correlation-based Doppler Optical Coherence Tomography

Abstract:A method based on higher-order cross-correlation is proposed to fetch the Doppler information on flow velocity within areas under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by spectral domain optical coherence tomography. The proposed method is theoretically developed and validated by measurement of a moving mirror with known velocities. Standard deviations of flow velocities of the mirror under different SNRs are determined by the proposed method and compared with those by the modified phase-resolved method. Measurement of flowing particles within a glass capillary is also conducted, and Doppler flow velocity maps of the glass capillary are reconstructed by both methods. All experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly suppress noise, thus rendering it suitable for flow measurement under low SNR cases.

Abstract:Dynamic and precise measurement of cerebral blood flow velocity plays a critical role in neuroscience and the diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases. Traditional color Doppler ultrasound can only measure the velocity component along the ultrasound beam, limiting its ability to accurately capture the full blood flow vector in complex environments. To address these limitations, we propose an ultrafast pulse-coded vector Doppler (PC-UVD) imaging method, leveraging Hadamard matrix pulse encoding to enhance velocity estimation accuracy in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. Our study includes both spiral flow simulations and in vivo rat brain experiments, demonstrating significant improvements in measurement precision compared to conventional ultrafast vector Doppler (UVD). This novel approach enables dynamic cerebral blood flow velocity measurement within a single cardiac cycle, offering insights into cerebrovascular resistivity characteristics. The proposed PC-UVD method encodes plane waves with Hadamard matrices, increasing SNR without sacrificing temporal or spatial resolution. Velocity vectors are then estimated using a weighted least squares (WLS) approach, where iterative residual-based weight optimization enhances robustness to noise and reduces outlier contributions. Simulations using a spiral blood flow phantom validate the effectiveness of this technique, showing a substantial improvement in velocity estimation accuracy, particularly in deep imaging regions with significant signal attenuation. In vivo experiments on rat brains further corroborate the enhanced accuracy of the proposed method over existing UVD approaches, particularly for small vessels. Notably, our approach can accurately differentiate arterial and venous flows by analyzing pulsatility and resistivity within the cerebral vascular network. This work demonstrates the potential of PC-UVD in complex vascular imaging, providing high SNR, high temporal and spatial resolution, and accurate vectorized flow measurements. Our results highlight its capability for non-invasive assessment of hemodynamic parameters and its potential application in the diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases, particularly in small vessels.

However, ultrafast ultrasound vascular imaging is susceptible to electronic noise due to the weak penetration of unfocused waves, leading to a lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at larger depths. In addition, incoherent clutter artifacts originating from strong and moving tissue scatterers that cannot be completely removed create a strong mask on top of the blood signal that obscures the vessels. Herein, a method that can simultaneously suppress the background noise and incoherent artifacts is proposed. The method divides the tilted plane or diverging waves into two subgroups. Coherent spatial compounding is performed within each subgroup, resulting in two compounded data sets. An SVD-based clutter filter is applied to each data set, followed by a correlation between the two data sets to produce a vascular image. Uncorrelated noise and incoherent artifacts can be effectively suppressed with the correlation process, while the coherent blood signal can be preserved. The method was evaluated in wire-target simulations and phantom, in which around 7–10-dB SNR improvement was shown. Consistent results were found in a flow channel phantom with improved SNR by the proposed method (39.9 ± 0.2 dB) against conventional power Doppler (29.1 ± 0.6 dB). Last, we demonstrated the effectiveness of the method combined with block-wise SVD clutter filtering in a human liver, breast tumor, and inflammatory bowel disease data sets. The improved blood flow visualization may facilitate more reliable small vessel imaging for a wide range of clinical applications, such as cancer and inflammatory diseases.

Abstract:Adaptive beamforming technology is an effective approach to improve the image quality of coherent plane-wave compounding (CPWC). However, when the number of tilted plane waves (PWs) decreases, adaptive beamforming methods usually entail a significant tradeoff between contrast improvement and speckle preservation. In addressing this challenge, we propose a random matrix theory-based Wiener (RMTW) postfilter combined with eigenspace and spatial coherence-based minimum variance (ESCMV) beamformer. The RMTW estimates the signal power of the RMTW by summing the output obtained by combinatorially multiplying the angular dimension data and using the random matrix theory to calculate the noise covariance for noise power estimation. Moreover, we propose an adaptive approach to estimate the eigenvalue threshold based on spatial coherence, aiming to reduce the artifacts induced by eigenspace-based minimum variance (EIBMV). The final image is derived by multiplying the outputs of RMTW and ESCMV. Results show that RMTW–ESCMV with 25 PWs achieves higher image quality than EIBMV with 75 PWs. Specifically, RMTW–ESCMV with 25 PWs averagely improves the contrast ratio (CR) by 23.3 dB (76%) and generalized contrast-to-noise ratio (gCNR) by 0.3 (55%) compared with EIBMV with 75 PWs in the experiment, respectively. For in vivo carotid data, RMTW–ESCMV with 25 PWs provides improvements of 38 dB (93%) in CR and 0.33 (91%) in gCNR, compared with EIBMV with 75 PWs. These findings affirm that the RMTW–ESCMV is a promising method for obtaining high-quality images at high frame rates.

Abstract:Ultrafast ultrasound Doppler imaging facilitates the assessment of cerebral hemodynamics with high spatio-temporal resolution. However, the significant acoustic impedance mismatch between the skull and soft tissue results in phase aberrations, which can compromise the quality of transcranial imaging and introduce biases in velocity and direction quantification of blood flow. This paper proposed an aberration correction method that combines deep learning-based skull sound speed modelling with ray theory to realize transcranial plane-wave imaging and ultrafast Doppler imaging. The method was validated through phantom experiments using a linear array with a center frequency of 6.25 MHz, 128 elements, and a pitch of 0.3 mm. The results demonstrated an improvement in the imaging quality of intracranial targets when using the proposed method. After aberration correction, the average locating deviation decreased from 1.40 mm to 0.27 mm in the axial direction, from 0.50 mm to 0.20 mm in the lateral direction, and the average full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) decreased from 1.37 mm to 0.97 mm for point scatterers. For circular inclusions, the average contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) improved from 8.1 dB to 11.0 dB, and the average eccentricity decreased from 0.36 to 0.26. Furthermore, the proposed method was applied to transcranial ultrafast Doppler flow imaging. The results showed a significant improvement in accuracy and quality for blood Doppler flow imaging. The results in the absence of the skull were considered as the reference, and the average normalized root-mean-square errors of the axial velocity component on the five selected axial profiles were reduced from 17.67% to 8.02% after the correction.

Abstract:<p>Plane wave compounding (PWC) is a valid method for ultrafast ultrasound imaging. Its imaging quality depends on the beamforming method. The coherence factor (CF) and Wiener postfilter are effective signal processing schemes for aberration correction. However, the CF usually causes over-suppression and brings artifacts. Additionally, the conventional CF and Wiener postfilter cannot fully utilize the spatial coherence in the PWC, which limits the imaging performance and increases the computation. In this paper, we propose a united Wiener postfilter specially for the PWC. The signal and noise power are both estimated through the echo signal matrix, rather than array signal vectors. The method also accords with the theoretical relationship between the CF and Wiener. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we conduct simulations, phantom and in vivo experiments and make comparisons with the delay-and-sum (DAS), the CF, the generalized coherence factor (GCF), the conventional Wiener and the scaled Wiener beamformers. Results indicate that our method can offer the better resolution and contrast than the DAS and Wiener. It also solves the over-suppression drawback of the CF. Specifically, the contrast ratio and contrast-to-noise ratio achieve 26.7% and 25.2% improvements in simulations, 28.7% and 32.4% in phantom experiments, respectively. The proposed method also performs well in terms of the speckle signal-to-noise ratio and the generalized contrast-to-noise ratio. Consequently, we believe that the proposed method is effective in enhancing the imaging quality of the PWC.</p>

Abstract:Multi-Line Transmission (MLT) was recently demonstrated as a valuable tool to increase the frame rate of ultrasound images. In this approach, the multiple beams that are simultaneously transmitted may determine cross-talk artifacts that are typically reduced, although not eliminated, by the use of Tukey apodization on both transmission and reception apertures, which unfortunately worsens the image lateral resolution. In this paper we investigate the combination, and related performance, of Filtered-Delay Multiply And Sum (F-DMAS) beamforming with MLT for high frame-rate ultrasound imaging. F-DMAS is a non-linear beamformer based on the computation of the receive aperture spatial autocorrelation, which was recently proposed for use in ultrasound B-mode imaging by some of the authors. The main advantages of such beamformer are the improved contrast resolution, obtained by lowering the beam side lobes and narrowing the main lobe, and the increased noise rejection. This study shows that in MLT images, compared to standard Delay And Sum (DAS) beamforming including Tukey apodization, F-DMAS beamforming yields better suppression of cross-talk and improved lateral resolution. The method's effectiveness is demonstrated by simulations and phantom experiments. Preliminary in vivo cardiac images also show that the frame rate can be improved up to 8-fold by combining F-DMAS and MLT without affecting the image quality.
