Abstract:During the years 1942-1945, LERICHE described the clinical, arteriographic, and operative findings in two patients with extraordinary elongation and dilatation of the pelvic and common femoral arteries which before operation were mistaken for aneurysms. In one patient, the accompanying veins were similarly involved. LERICHE termed this disease arteria (vena) magna et do1icho and did not suggest that arteriosclerosis was the cause of the condition. These vessels were however not microscopically examined. ACKERMAN & BUTCHER (1964), in their text on surgical pathology, mentioned this condition, but there has been no further reference to it in the English literature. In order to determine whether these abnormalities represent a specific type of vascular disease, the femoral or aorto-i1io-femora1 arteriograms of 670 patients were reviewed (FRIEDENBERG & CARLSSON 1965). The present communication is a report on the clinical, roentgenographic, and pathologic findings in 9 patients in whom the arteries in the pelvis and/or lower extremities were similar to those described by LERIC,HE.

Abstract:The rapid emergence of microfluidic paper-based devices as point-of-care testing (POCT) tools for early disease diagnosis and health monitoring, particularly in resource-limited areas, holds immense potential for enhancing healthcare accessibility. Leveraging the numerous advantages of paper, such as capillary-driven flow, porous structure, hydrophilic functional groups, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility, it has become a pivotal choice for microfluidic substrates. The repertoire of microfluidic paper-based devices includes one-dimensional lateral flow assays (1D LFAs), two-dimensional microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (2D μPADs), and three-dimensional (3D) μPADs. In this comprehensive review, we provide and examine crucial information related to paper substrates, design strategies, and detection methods in multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices. We also investigate potential applications of microfluidic paper-based devices for detecting viruses, metabolites and hormones in non-invasive samples such as human saliva, sweat and urine. Additionally, we delve into capillary-driven flow alternative theoretical models of fluids within the paper to provide guidance. Finally, we critically examine the potential for future developments and address challenges for multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices in advancing noninvasive early diagnosis and health monitoring. This article showcases their transformative impact on healthcare, paving the way for enhanced medical services worldwide.

Abstract:Despite that microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) provide effective analytical platforms for point-of-care diagnosis in resource-limited areas, it remains challenging to achieve simple and low-cost fabrication of μPADs. A novel method for fabrication of μPADs is developed in this study using a folded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated paper mask with a specific pattern to form a sandwich structure with inserted chromatographic paper. PDMS penetrates the target paper from the front and the back sides, and then is cured in the target paper to form legible channels. This method for prototyping μPADs has many favorable merits including simple operation without the need of trained personnel, fast fabrication and low cost. We further investigated colorimetric detection of melamine in the μPADs, and it showed a remarkable measurement with a detection limit of 0.1 ppm in aqueous solutions and liquid milk discriminated by the naked eye, which meets the detection limit required by USA and China. The fabricating strategy developed in this study is very promising and attractive for the development of simple μPADs for point-of-care applications, including diagnostic testing, food safety control and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:When compared with conventional microfluidic chips made of glass and polymer substrates, paper-based microfluidic analysis devices (mu PADs) possess many unique advantages, including low-cost, easy-to-fabricate, strong capillary action and good biological compatibility. In recent years, mu PADs have attracted increased interest and attention, which has led to their rapid development. Thousands of literature reports regarding mu PADs have been published and a variety of mu PADs fabrication methods have been reported. This review focuses on the development of the fabrication methods of 2D and 3D mu PADs since 2007. A summary of the advantages and disadvantages of these methods is provided with particular attention paid to the resolution and cost of each method. Suitable applications of each method are discussed. Also, some trends of mu PADs are summarized.

Abstract:As a pump-free and lightweight analytical tool, paper-based microfluidic analytical devices (μPADs) attract more and more interest. If the flow speed of μPAD can be programmed, the analytical sequences could be designed and they will be more popular. This reports presents a novel μPAD, driven by the capillary force of cellulose powder, printed by a desktop three-dimensional (3D) printer, which has some promising features, such as easy fabrication and programmable flow speed. First, a suitable size-scale substrate with open microchannels on its surface is printed. Next, the surface of the substrate is covered with a thin layer of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to seal the micro gap caused by 3D printing. Then, the microchannels are filled with a mixture of cellulose powder and deionized water in an appropriate proportion. After drying in an oven at 60 °C for 30 min, it is ready for use. As the different channel depths can be easily printed, which can be used to achieve the programmable capillary flow speed of cellulose powder in the microchannels. A series of microfluidic analytical experiments, including quantitative analysis of nitrite ion and fabrication of T-sensor were used to demonstrate its capability. As the desktop 3D printer (D3DP) is very cheap and accessible, this device can be rapidly printed at the test field with a low cost and has a promising potential in the point-of-care (POC) system or as a lightweight platform for analytical chemistry.

Abstract:This comprehensive review explores the recent advancements in the design, fabrication, materials, and detection methods of Microfluidic Paper‐Based Analytical Devices (μPADs). With their simplicity, cost‐effectiveness, and portability, μPADs have found applications in environmental quality control, clinical diagnosis, and food safety testing. The article provides insights into the principles of operation, various applications, and future development prospects of μPADs. Microfluidic Paper‐based Analytical Devices (μPADs) have emerged as a new class of microfluidic systems, offering numerous advantages over traditional microfluidic chips. These advantages include simplicity, cost‐effectiveness, stability, storability, disposability, and portability. As a result, various designs for different types of assays are developed and investigated. In recent years, μPADs are combined with conventional detection methods to enable rapid on‐site detection, providing results comparable to expensive and sophisticated large‐scale testing methods that require more time and skilled personnel. The application of μPAD techniques is extensive in environmental quality control/analysis, clinical diagnosis, and food safety testing, paving the way for on‐site real‐time diagnosis as a promising future development. This review focuses on the recent research advancements in the design, fabrication, material selection, and detection methods of μPADs. It provides a comprehensive understanding of their principles of operation, applications, and future development prospects.

Abstract:The early detection of pathogens plays a significant role in reducing fatalities and improving prognosis. Laboratory tests such as the cell culture, polymerase chain reaction, and immunoassays are performed for the identification of pathogens; however, these are time-consuming and require trained personnel, limiting their prompt use at the point of need. Several microfluidic devices have been developed for point-of-care testing (POCT), including microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs). Paper, as a material, holds great promise for POCT owing to its advantages such as low cost, easy fabrication, easy disposal, and equipment-free operation by capillary action, which coincides with the requirements for an ideal rapid test. Considering this, we summarize major μPAD fabrication techniques as well as the fluid controlling strategies published to date. The development of various fabrication techniques is important for finding appropriate mass-production methods, and fluid control determines the complexity of the analysis. We also emphasize on recent bacterial and viral detection strategies from recent publications. Finally, this review discusses the challenges of developing an integrated device that can provide quantitative results to further improve the performance of bacterial and viral detection.

Abstract:For in-situ disease markers detection, point-of-care (POC) diagnosis has great advantages in speed and cost compared with traditional techniques. The rapid diagnosis, prognosis, and surveillance of diseases can significantly reduce disease-related mortality and trauma. Therefore, increasing attention has been paid to the POC diagnosis devices due to their excellent diagnosis speed and portability. Over the past ten years, paper-based microfluidic aptasensors have emerged as a class of critical POC diagnosis devices and various aptasensors have been proposed to detect various disease markers. However, most aptasensors need further improvement before they can actually enter the market and be widely used. There is thus an urgent need to sort out the key points of preparing the aptasensors and the direction that needs to be invested in. This review summarizes the representative articles in the development of paper-based microfluidic aptasensors. These works can be divided into paper-based optical aptasensors and paper-based electrochemical aptasensors according to their output signals. Significant focus is applied to these works according to the following three parts: (1) The ingenious design of device structure; (2) Application and synthesis of nanomaterial; (3) The detection principle of the proposed aptasensor. This is a detailed and comprehensive review of paper-based microfluidic aptasensors. The accomplishments and shortcomings of the current aptasensors are outlined, the development direction and the future prospective are given. It is hoped that the research in this review can provide a reference for further development of more advanced, more effective paper-based microfluidic aptasensors for POC disease markers diagnosis.

Abstract:We developed a portable device for blood detection as well as blood typing assay, using a microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) which proves to be sensitive, cost-effective, user-friendly and field-appropriate. A different patterned µPAD was fabricated using wax and a laser printer for detection of blood and ABO and Rh blood typing. Five different blood detection tests and two blood typing systems, i.e. ABO and Rh, were performed within minutes without following any complex protocol and were simple to infer. The performance of this hand-held μPAD proves it to be a reliable alternative to lab-based tests, at a fraction of the cost and with simplicity. The developed μPAD provides on-site blood detection as well as blood typing, which proves to be a reasonable and very useful add-on to conventional forensic and clinical investigations.

Abstract:Point-of-care testing (POCT), as a portable and user-friendly technology, can obtain accurate test results immediately at the sampling point. Nowadays, microfluidic paper-based analysis devices (μPads) have attracted the eye of the public and accelerated the development of POCT. A variety of detection methods are combined with μPads to realize precise, rapid and sensitive POCT. This article mainly introduced the development of electrochemistry and optical detection methods on μPads for POCT and their applications on disease analysis, environmental monitoring and food control in the past 5 years. Finally, the challenges and future development prospects of μPads for POCT were discussed.

Abstract:Paper-based microfluidic devices with screen-printed electrodes (SPEs) for electrochemical sensing are popular for low-cost point-of-care diagnostics. The electroactive sensing area in these devices is always the irregular, bottom-SPE surface which is in contact with the analyte flowing within the paper substrate. Unfortunately, this results in an electroactive area which varies widely from sensor to sensor. In this paper, we present a three-dimensional paper-based analytical device with a hollow 3D fluid reservoir which allows for use of a more uniform top-SPE surface as the electroactive sensing area. The use of this isolated reservoir eliminates the need for dielectric inks used in conventional SPEs on paper. Our sensors are fabricated using a combination of wax-printing, screen-printing and simple folding via a cleanroom free process without the need for expensive equipment. Additionally, for the first time, we demonstrate an electrochemical paper-based analytical device with a custom designed potentiostat integrated circuit (IC) as a miniaturized reader. The versatility of the sensor is demonstrated through voltammetric, amperometric and potentiometric measurements of important biochemical analytes such as dopamine, glucose and pH. The 3D ePAD together with a custom CMOS potentiostat demonstrates a low-cost, versatile, self-contained system suitable for point-of-care diagnostic devices.

Abstract:Nowadays point-of care (POC) devices dominate the field of bioanalysis as they play a pivotal role in improving different aspects of diagnostics including screening, early diagnosis, and disease monitoring. These devices comply with the World Health Organization ASSURED criteria that describe the ideal POC tool. While conventional materials like polymers, silicon, metallic foils, and glass have been exploited in POC device manufacturing, recent innovations relying on paper-based materials have introduced a new era of versatile diagnostic tools. Because of their properties, cellulose and its derivatives have emerged as the most common paper-based substrate in device fabrication. The present review explores recent developments in paper-based diagnostics, covering a wide range of applications including reagent storage and isolation/extraction of the analyte and also serving as a sensing platform. The versatility of paper substrates in various diagnostic devices such as lateral flow assays, electrochemical sensors, microfluidics, etc. is discussed, highlighting their advantages, challenges, and limitations on the context of precision medicine.

Abstract:In modeling and simulation (MS i.e., a p-box. Implications of sampling over interval versus probabilistic uncertainties in the outer loop are discussed and examples are given showing the effects of the choice of uncertainty propagation and characterization methods. In addition to the uncertainties in model inputs, uncertainties also arise due to modeling deficiencies and numerical approximations. Modeling uncertainties can be reduced by performing additional experiments and numerical uncertainties can be reduced by using additional computational resources; thus, both sources of uncertainty can be modeled as epistemic and can be characterized as intervals and included in the total predictive uncertainty by appropriately broadening the prediction p-box. A simple example is given for the M&S predictions of supersonic nozzle thrust that incorporates and quantifies all three sources of uncertainty.

Abstract:Pathogens cause various infectious diseases and high morbidity and mortality which is a global public health threat. The highly sensitive and specific detection is of significant importance for the effective treatment and intervention to minimise the impact. However, conventional detection methods including culture and molecular method gravely depend on expensive equipment and well-trained skilled personnel, limiting in the laboratory. It remains challenging to adapt in resource-limiting areas, e.g., low and middle-income countries (LMICs). To this end, low-cost, rapid, and sensitive detection tools with the capability of field testing e.g., a portable device for identification and quantification of pathogens, has attracted increasing attentions. Recently, paper-based microfluidic analytical devices (μPADs) have shown a promising tool for rapid and on-site diagnosis, providing a cost-effective and sensitive analytical approach for pathogens detection. The fast turn-round data collection may also contribute to better understanding of the risks and insights on mitigation method. In this paper, critical developments of μPADs for in-field detection of pathogens both for clinical diagnostics and environmental surveillance are reviewed. The future development, and challenges of μPADs for rapid and onsite detection of pathogens are discussed, including using the cross-disciplinary development with, emerging techniques such as deep learning and Internet of Things (IoT).

Abstract:Rapid, low-cost, and sensitive nucleic acid detection and quantification assays enabled by microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) hold great promise for point-of-care disease diagnostics and field-based molecular tests. Through the capillary action in μPAD, flexible manipulation of nucleic acid samples can be achieved without the need for external pumps or power supplies, making it possible to fabricate highly integrated sample-to-answer devices that streamline the nucleic acid extraction, separation, concentration, amplification, and detection. To detect minute amounts of genetic materials from clinical and biological samples, it is also critical to develop sensitive signal readouts that generate physically detectable signals for in-device nucleic acid detection and/or quantification. Abstract:As a kind of facile tool, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) have been widely used in analytical and biomedical fields. However, because we lack the ability to control the continuous perfusion of these devices, they are not generally used in fields that require continuous flow, especially biofluidics fields such as cell culturing, drug screening, and organs on chips. In this study, we designed a novel, low-cost, and compact platform that can be used to control the continuous perfusion of μPADs. As most of the parts of this platform can be created using a three-dimensional (3D) desktop printer, our platform can be easily duplicated by other researchers. We demonstrate that with our system, μPADs can be promising paper-based biofluidic platforms for cell culturing and drug screening.

Abstract:Foodborne pathogens, food adulterants, allergens, and toxic chemicals in food can cause major health hazards to humans and animals. Stringent quality control measures at all stages of food processing are required to ensure food safety. There is, therefore, a global need for affordable, reliable, and rapid tests that can be conducted at different process steps and processing sites, spanning the range from the sourcing of food to the end-product acquired by the consumer. Current laboratory-based food quality control tests are well established, but many are not suitable for rapid on-site investigations and are costly. Microfluidic paper analytical devices (μPADs) are a fast-growing field in medical diagnostics that can fill these gaps. In this review, we describe the latest developments in the applications of microfluidic paper analytic device (μPAD) technology in the food safety sector. State-of-the-art μPAD designs and fabrication methods, microfluidic assay principles, and various types of μPAD devices with food-specific applications are discussed. We have identified the prominent research and development trends and future directions for maximizing the value of microfluidic technology in the food sector and have highlighted key areas for improvement. We conclude that the μPAD technology is promising in food safety applications by using novel materials and improved methods to enhance the sensitivity and specificity of the assays, with low cost.

Abstract:Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (mu PADs) are emerging as effective analytical platforms for point-of-care assays in resource-limited areas. Simple and cost-effective fabrication method still remains challenging on mu PADs. A simple and cost-effective method for fabricating paper-based devices was presented in this work by using of dipping strategy with the recycled polystyrene in chloroform as the hydrophobic reagent. Adhesive tape was employed as mask to transfer the hydrophilic channel pattern to the paper substrate. With the single-sided adhesive tape stuck on the hydrophilic parts of the paper surface, the paper-based device was immersed in chloroform solution with dissolving recycling polystyrene for several seconds. Then the hydrophilic pattern can be achieved and all the other parts on the paper surface were hydrophobic. The adhesive tape was torn off from the hydrophilic parts. The highest contact angle value of 114 degrees of the hydrophobic part was acquired with this simple fabrication method. By using of the sandwich-type immunoreactions and luminol-H2O2 p-iodophenol (PIP) chemiluminescence(CL) system, three cancer biomarkers were simultaneously detected in human serum samples on mu PADs with the linear range of 0.05-80.0 ng.mL(-1) for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), 5.0-80.0 ng.mL(-1) for alpha-fetal protein (AFP) and 1.0-50.0 ng.mL(-1) for prostate-specific antigen (PSA). The fabricating strategy with recycling polystyrene and adhesive tape provides a versatile platform for prototyping of mu PADs in both developed and resource constrained region.
