Abstract:During the years 1942-1945, LERICHE described the clinical, arteriographic, and operative findings in two patients with extraordinary elongation and dilatation of the pelvic and common femoral arteries which before operation were mistaken for aneurysms. In one patient, the accompanying veins were similarly involved. LERICHE termed this disease arteria (vena) magna et do1icho and did not suggest that arteriosclerosis was the cause of the condition. These vessels were however not microscopically examined. ACKERMAN & BUTCHER (1964), in their text on surgical pathology, mentioned this condition, but there has been no further reference to it in the English literature. In order to determine whether these abnormalities represent a specific type of vascular disease, the femoral or aorto-i1io-femora1 arteriograms of 670 patients were reviewed (FRIEDENBERG & CARLSSON 1965). The present communication is a report on the clinical, roentgenographic, and pathologic findings in 9 patients in whom the arteries in the pelvis and/or lower extremities were similar to those described by LERIC,HE.

Abstract:This comprehensive review explores the recent advancements in the design, fabrication, materials, and detection methods of Microfluidic Paper‐Based Analytical Devices (μPADs). With their simplicity, cost‐effectiveness, and portability, μPADs have found applications in environmental quality control, clinical diagnosis, and food safety testing. The article provides insights into the principles of operation, various applications, and future development prospects of μPADs. Microfluidic Paper‐based Analytical Devices (μPADs) have emerged as a new class of microfluidic systems, offering numerous advantages over traditional microfluidic chips. These advantages include simplicity, cost‐effectiveness, stability, storability, disposability, and portability. As a result, various designs for different types of assays are developed and investigated. In recent years, μPADs are combined with conventional detection methods to enable rapid on‐site detection, providing results comparable to expensive and sophisticated large‐scale testing methods that require more time and skilled personnel. The application of μPAD techniques is extensive in environmental quality control/analysis, clinical diagnosis, and food safety testing, paving the way for on‐site real‐time diagnosis as a promising future development. This review focuses on the recent research advancements in the design, fabrication, material selection, and detection methods of μPADs. It provides a comprehensive understanding of their principles of operation, applications, and future development prospects.

Abstract:The rapid emergence of microfluidic paper-based devices as point-of-care testing (POCT) tools for early disease diagnosis and health monitoring, particularly in resource-limited areas, holds immense potential for enhancing healthcare accessibility. Leveraging the numerous advantages of paper, such as capillary-driven flow, porous structure, hydrophilic functional groups, biodegradability, cost-effectiveness, and flexibility, it has become a pivotal choice for microfluidic substrates. The repertoire of microfluidic paper-based devices includes one-dimensional lateral flow assays (1D LFAs), two-dimensional microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (2D μPADs), and three-dimensional (3D) μPADs. In this comprehensive review, we provide and examine crucial information related to paper substrates, design strategies, and detection methods in multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices. We also investigate potential applications of microfluidic paper-based devices for detecting viruses, metabolites and hormones in non-invasive samples such as human saliva, sweat and urine. Additionally, we delve into capillary-driven flow alternative theoretical models of fluids within the paper to provide guidance. Finally, we critically examine the potential for future developments and address challenges for multi-dimensional microfluidic paper-based devices in advancing noninvasive early diagnosis and health monitoring. This article showcases their transformative impact on healthcare, paving the way for enhanced medical services worldwide.

Abstract:Pathogens cause various infectious diseases and high morbidity and mortality which is a global public health threat. The highly sensitive and specific detection is of significant importance for the effective treatment and intervention to minimise the impact. However, conventional detection methods including culture and molecular method gravely depend on expensive equipment and well-trained skilled personnel, limiting in the laboratory. It remains challenging to adapt in resource-limiting areas, e.g., low and middle-income countries (LMICs). To this end, low-cost, rapid, and sensitive detection tools with the capability of field testing e.g., a portable device for identification and quantification of pathogens, has attracted increasing attentions. Recently, paper-based microfluidic analytical devices (μPADs) have shown a promising tool for rapid and on-site diagnosis, providing a cost-effective and sensitive analytical approach for pathogens detection. The fast turn-round data collection may also contribute to better understanding of the risks and insights on mitigation method. In this paper, critical developments of μPADs for in-field detection of pathogens both for clinical diagnostics and environmental surveillance are reviewed. The future development, and challenges of μPADs for rapid and onsite detection of pathogens are discussed, including using the cross-disciplinary development with, emerging techniques such as deep learning and Internet of Things (IoT).

Abstract:Point-of-care testing (POCT), as a portable and user-friendly technology, can obtain accurate test results immediately at the sampling point. Nowadays, microfluidic paper-based analysis devices (μPads) have attracted the eye of the public and accelerated the development of POCT. A variety of detection methods are combined with μPads to realize precise, rapid and sensitive POCT. This article mainly introduced the development of electrochemistry and optical detection methods on μPads for POCT and their applications on disease analysis, environmental monitoring and food control in the past 5 years. Finally, the challenges and future development prospects of μPads for POCT were discussed.

Abstract:The early detection of pathogens plays a significant role in reducing fatalities and improving prognosis. Laboratory tests such as the cell culture, polymerase chain reaction, and immunoassays are performed for the identification of pathogens; however, these are time-consuming and require trained personnel, limiting their prompt use at the point of need. Several microfluidic devices have been developed for point-of-care testing (POCT), including microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs). Paper, as a material, holds great promise for POCT owing to its advantages such as low cost, easy fabrication, easy disposal, and equipment-free operation by capillary action, which coincides with the requirements for an ideal rapid test. Considering this, we summarize major μPAD fabrication techniques as well as the fluid controlling strategies published to date. The development of various fabrication techniques is important for finding appropriate mass-production methods, and fluid control determines the complexity of the analysis. We also emphasize on recent bacterial and viral detection strategies from recent publications. Finally, this review discusses the challenges of developing an integrated device that can provide quantitative results to further improve the performance of bacterial and viral detection.

Abstract:Microfluidic paper-based chips (μPCs) are micro-laboratory analysis systems that use paper instead of traditional microfluidic substrate materials and miniaturize biochemical reactions. Based on traditional 2D μPCs, the novel μPCs are innovative 3D structure chips that are realized by fluid channel construction, channel microvalve, folding and other fluid control methods. In recent years, μPCs have developed rapidly in terms of design and integration and have been widely used in food safety, environmental residue pollution, pathogen detection and other applications. Due to their advantages of low cost, portability and satisfactory thermal stability, they have unique potential in the field of rapid detection. Herein, based on the detailed preparation, we focus on the selection of the paper substrate, microfluidic chip hydrophilic/hydrophobic processing and substrate modification. We highlight the latest research progress of μPCs in rapid detection from 2014 to 2021, and discuss the remaining challenges and future perspectives for further development.

Abstract:This report deals with the pathology, diagnosis and therapy of cryptorchidism from the andrological point of view. Hypothalamic-pituitary gonadal failure and a reduced transformation of gonocytes are the key factors in fertility disorders. The aim of all well-timed therapy must be to improve the fertility potential of the sexually mature male. At present, the determination through biopsy of the fertility index during orchiopexy offers the only possibility of prospective diagnosis in this respect. In the future, it will be necessary to have a standardized procedure in order to guarantee the long-term effect of correctly timed orchiopexy on fertility.

Abstract:Spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has significantly impacted the public health and economic sectors. It is urgently necessary to develop rapid, convenient, and cost-effective point-of-care testing (POCT) technologies for the early diagnosis and control of the plague's transmission. Developing POCT methods and related devices is critical for achieving point-of-care diagnosis. With the advantages of miniaturization, high throughput, small sample requirements, and low actual consumption, microfluidics is an essential technology for the development of POCT devices. In this review, according to the different driving forces of the fluid, we introduce the common POCT devices based on microfluidic technology on the market, including paper-based microfluidic, centrifugal microfluidic, optical fluid, and digital microfluidic platforms. Furthermore, various microfluidic-based assays for diagnosing COVID-19 are summarized, including immunoassays, such as ELISA, and molecular assays, such as PCR. Finally, the challenges of and future perspectives on microfluidic device design and development are presented. The ultimate goals of this paper are to provide new insights and directions for the development of microfluidic diagnostics while expecting to contribute to the control of COVID-19.

Abstract:The current widespread of COVID-19 all over the world, which is caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus, has again emphasized the importance of development of point-of-care (POC) diagnostics for timely prevention and control of the pandemic. Compared with labor- and time-consuming traditional diagnostic methods, POC diagnostics exhibit several advantages such as faster diagnostic speed, better sensitivity and specificity, lower cost, higher efficiency and ability of on-site detection. To achieve POC diagnostics, developing POC detection methods and correlated POC devices is the key and should be given top priority. The fast development of microfluidics, micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, nanotechnology and materials science, have benefited the production of a series of portable, miniaturized, low cost and highly integrated POC devices for POC diagnostics of various infectious diseases. In this review, various POC detection methods for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, including electrochemical biosensors, fluorescence biosensors, surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based biosensors, colorimetric biosensors, chemiluminiscence biosensors, surface plasmon resonance (SPR)-based biosensors, and magnetic biosensors, were first summarized. Then, recent progresses in the development of POC devices including lab-on-a-chip (LOC) devices, lab-on-a-disc (LOAD) devices, microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), lateral flow devices, miniaturized PCR devices, and isothermal nucleic acid amplification (INAA) devices, were systematically discussed. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives for the design and development of POC detection methods and correlated devices were presented. The ultimate goal of this review is to provide new insights and directions for the future development of POC diagnostics for the management of infectious diseases and contribute to the prevention and control of infectious pandemics like COVID-19.

Abstract:Despite that microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) provide effective analytical platforms for point-of-care diagnosis in resource-limited areas, it remains challenging to achieve simple and low-cost fabrication of μPADs. A novel method for fabrication of μPADs is developed in this study using a folded polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated paper mask with a specific pattern to form a sandwich structure with inserted chromatographic paper. PDMS penetrates the target paper from the front and the back sides, and then is cured in the target paper to form legible channels. This method for prototyping μPADs has many favorable merits including simple operation without the need of trained personnel, fast fabrication and low cost. We further investigated colorimetric detection of melamine in the μPADs, and it showed a remarkable measurement with a detection limit of 0.1 ppm in aqueous solutions and liquid milk discriminated by the naked eye, which meets the detection limit required by USA and China. The fabricating strategy developed in this study is very promising and attractive for the development of simple μPADs for point-of-care applications, including diagnostic testing, food safety control and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:ELISA technology has received great attention in in vitro diagnostics (IVD) due to its high specificity, sensitivity and high throughput. However, the traditional ELISA technology is tedious, lacks of multiplexing detection capabilities, and is not easy to implement in point-of-care (POC) settings. The emergence and development of magnetic bead technology, paper-based platform and nanomaterials have attracted researchers in various fields to improve and design new ELISA derived technologies. Recently, ELISA has been creatively used to integrate with these analytical techniques to realize high sensitivity, specificity, repeatability, low cost and multiplexing detection. However, the applications of various ELISA derived technologies in IVD are rarely reviewed, where is the thrust of this review. In this review, we first introduced the history and principle related to ELISA technology, then we classify and introduce various ELISA derived technologies with an emphasis, and finally we discuss the current challenges and prospects of ELISA technology.

Abstract:For in-situ disease markers detection, point-of-care (POC) diagnosis has great advantages in speed and cost compared with traditional techniques. The rapid diagnosis, prognosis, and surveillance of diseases can significantly reduce disease-related mortality and trauma. Therefore, increasing attention has been paid to the POC diagnosis devices due to their excellent diagnosis speed and portability. Over the past ten years, paper-based microfluidic aptasensors have emerged as a class of critical POC diagnosis devices and various aptasensors have been proposed to detect various disease markers. However, most aptasensors need further improvement before they can actually enter the market and be widely used. There is thus an urgent need to sort out the key points of preparing the aptasensors and the direction that needs to be invested in. This review summarizes the representative articles in the development of paper-based microfluidic aptasensors. These works can be divided into paper-based optical aptasensors and paper-based electrochemical aptasensors according to their output signals. Significant focus is applied to these works according to the following three parts: (1) The ingenious design of device structure; (2) Application and synthesis of nanomaterial; (3) The detection principle of the proposed aptasensor. This is a detailed and comprehensive review of paper-based microfluidic aptasensors. The accomplishments and shortcomings of the current aptasensors are outlined, the development direction and the future prospective are given. It is hoped that the research in this review can provide a reference for further development of more advanced, more effective paper-based microfluidic aptasensors for POC disease markers diagnosis.

Abstract:Advances in microfluidic device miniaturization and system integration contribute to the development of portable, handheld, and smartphone-compatible devices. These advancements in diagnostics have the potential to revolutionize the approach to detect and respond to future pandemics. Accordingly, herein, recent advances in point-of-care testing (POCT) of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) using various microdevices, including lateral flow assay strips, vertical flow assay strips, microfluidic channels, and paper-based microfluidic devices, are reviewed. However, visual determination of the diagnostic results using only microdevices leads to many false-negative results due to the limited detection sensitivities of these devices. Several POCT systems comprising microdevices integrated with portable optical readers have been developed to address this issue. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, effective POCT strategies for COVID-19 based on optical detection methods have been established. They can be categorized into fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy, and wearable sensing. We introduced next-generation pandemic sensing methods incorporating artificial intelligence that can be used to meet global health needs in the future. Additionally, we have discussed appropriate responses of various testing devices to emerging infectious diseases and prospective preventive measures for the post-pandemic era. We believe that this review will be helpful for preparing for future infectious disease outbreaks.

Abstract:Abstract: In today’s era, detection of disease is utmost important for the management of disease. Early detection leads to early management of disease. Paper-based microfluidic devices are promising technologies that are cost-effective, portable and easy to use over conventional methods. In addition, paper-based microfluidics offers low reagent/sample volume, less response time and can be used in resource-limited settings. Researchers are highly fascinated by this technology as it has a lot of potential to convert into commercial monitoring devices. The present article covers the uses of paper-based microfluidic technology for the swift and sensitive detection of pathogens from diverse samples, viz. food, water and blood. In this comprehensive review, paper-based microfluidic devices are introduced, including the basic concepts, current status and applications, along with the discussion of the limitations of microfluidics for the detection of pathogens. Although paper-based microfluidic devices are being developed, their commercialization requires simplification of manufacturing processes, reduction in production costs as well as an increase in production efficiency. Nonetheless, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) like smartphones, digital cameras, webcam etc. with paper-associated diagnosis has transformed the point-of-care (POC) diagnostics.

Abstract:Recent advances in microfluidics-based point-of-care testing (POCT) technology such as paper, array, and beads have shown promising results for diagnosing various infectious diseases. The fast and timely detection of viral infection has proven to be a critical step for deciding the therapeutic outcome in the current COVID-19 pandemic, which in turn not only enhances the patient survival rate but also reduces the disease-associated comorbidities. In the present scenario, rapid, noninvasive detection of the virus using low cost and high throughput microfluidics-based POCT devices embraces the advantages over existing diagnostic technologies, for which a centralized lab facility, expensive instruments, sample pretreatment, and skilled personnel are required. Microfluidic-based multiplexed POCT devices can be a boon for clinical diagnosis in developing countries that lacks a centralized health care system and resources. The microfluidic devices can be used for disease diagnosis and exploited for the development and testing of drug efficacy for disease treatment in model systems. The havoc created by the second wave of COVID-19 led several countries' governments to the back front. The lack of diagnostic kits, medical devices, and human resources created a huge demand for a technology that can be remotely operated with single touch and data that can be analyzed on a phone. Recent advancements in information technology and the use of smartphones led to a paradigm shift in the development of diagnostic devices, which can be explored to deal with the current pandemic situation. This review sheds light on various approaches for the development of cost-effective microfluidics POCT devices. The successfully used microfluidic devices for COVID-19 detection under clinical settings along with their pros and cons have been discussed here. Further, the integration of microfluidic devices with smartphones and wireless network systems using the Internet-of-things will enable readers for manufacturing advanced POCT devices for remote disease management in low resource settings.

Abstract:Nowadays point-of care (POC) devices dominate the field of bioanalysis as they play a pivotal role in improving different aspects of diagnostics including screening, early diagnosis, and disease monitoring. These devices comply with the World Health Organization ASSURED criteria that describe the ideal POC tool. While conventional materials like polymers, silicon, metallic foils, and glass have been exploited in POC device manufacturing, recent innovations relying on paper-based materials have introduced a new era of versatile diagnostic tools. Because of their properties, cellulose and its derivatives have emerged as the most common paper-based substrate in device fabrication. The present review explores recent developments in paper-based diagnostics, covering a wide range of applications including reagent storage and isolation/extraction of the analyte and also serving as a sensing platform. The versatility of paper substrates in various diagnostic devices such as lateral flow assays, electrochemical sensors, microfluidics, etc. is discussed, highlighting their advantages, challenges, and limitations on the context of precision medicine.
