Abstract:Environmental contextThe concentration, types and distribution of antibiotics in soils can have environmental effects and can be modelled using laboratory systems. Adsorption of ofloxacin (OFL) and levofloxacin (LEV) enantiomers to goethite can probe this behaviour and each binds differently to the solid phase. The different behaviour of LEV and OFL in relation to solid-solution partitioning will affect their environmental fate. AbstractThe adsorption of ofloxacin enantiomers, namely levofloxacin (LEV) and ofloxacin (OFL), to goethite was investigated using batch experiments. Structural information of aqueous and adsorbed LEV or OFL was obtained with ultraviolet–visible (UV-Vis), three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix (EEM) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic methods. The results indicated that LEV molecules formed a bridging bidentate complex (≡(FeO)2–LEV) with the surface of goethite, and OFL formed a monodentate complex (≡FeO–OFL). The adsorption of OFL to goethite was stronger than that of LEV, owing to differences in their physicochemical properties and bonding modes. The adsorption of LEV and OFL to goethite in single systems was well simulated using the charge distribution multi-site complexation (CD-MUSIC) model, but their adsorption in the LEV–OFL–goethite systems was overestimated at pH ~5.2 and high concentrations of LEV–OFL mixture (19.59μM), in which the predicted amounts of adsorbed LEV and OFL were higher (20.0, 30.8%) than the experimental results. Compared with the unprotonated LEV or OFL, the protonated (>99.9%) ones were mainly adsorbed to the surface of goethite, and the single species may be used during their following modelling.

Abstract:The exogenous addition of humic acid (HA) is often seen as a biostimulation strategy to expedite the bioremediation of various pharmaceutical pollutants. Nevertheless, the impact of HA on the bioadsorption of ofloxacin (OFL), the main pathway for OFL removal in activated sludge, remains unknown. In this study, the presence of 10 mg/L HA notably decreased the theoretical OFL adsorption capacity from 8.94 to 7.95 mg/g. The inhibitory effect persisted across varying pH and ionic strengths and became more pronounced with increasing HA concentration. The morphological changes on biosolid (BIO) induced by HA indicated that HA was bioadsorbed, which in turn competed with OFL for metal binding sites like Ca and Mg on BIO. Further analysis of the OFL-HA interaction reveals the involvement of hydrogen bonding and electrostatic attraction. The study also demonstrates the bridging role of HA between OFL and BIO through consecutive desorption and re-absorption processes of OFL in the presence of HA. To quantify the direct and indirect adsorption ratios, a new approach was proposed, which determined the mass ratios of direct (OFL:BIO) and indirect bioadsorption (OFL:HA:BIO) as 1:192 and 1:21:854, respectively. These findings suggest that the indirect OFL adsorption through the HA bridge could not compensate for the adverse effects caused by the reduction of metal binding sites. Overall, this study calls for a reassessment of the addition of HA in the bioremediation process of OFL. Considering that HA widely coexists with antibiotics in wastewater, the study also provides valuable insights into OFL removal mechanisms in WWTPs.

Abstract:Elucidating how organic matter and iron oxide particles interact will advance the understanding of geochemical processes and facilitate the development and implementation of methods to address groundwater pollution. The sorption and fractionation of three well-characterized organic matter isolates, Suwannee River natural organic matter (SRNOM), Suwannee River fulvic acid (SRFA), and Eliot Soil humic acid (ESHA), onto goethite nanoparticles in batch reactors and goethite-coated sand in column reactors were studied. Total organic carbon, molecular size, and optical properties were measured before and after exposure to solids in batch and column reactors, as well as in solution after the resuspension of equilibrated solids in a fresh buffer. Fluorescent, aromatic, high-molecular-weight material more strongly sorbed and stayed sorbed upon exposure to fresh solution. The effects of the different organic matter fractions on reduction of 4-chloronitrobenzene (4-ClNB) were also quantified. In both batch and column reactors, the reactivity of NOM-treated particles toward 4-ClNB in the presence of Fe(II) was inhibited by all isolates as compared to that in NOM-free reactors, with SRFA inhibiting reaction rate constants the most followed by ESHA and SRNOM. There are clear spectral and size differences in the organic matter that remains in the liquid medium compared to the NOM that binds to the mineral surfaces, but both of these materials inhibit Fe(II)-mediated reactions on the surface. Materials high in aliphatic and carboxylate contents, rather than the more strongly sorbing fluorescent aromatic material, appear to inhibit reactivity.

Abstract:Two series of lignin (LN)-based adsorbents, namely, cross-linked lignin (LNEs) with different crosslinking densities and carboxymethyl cross-linked lignin (LNECs) with various degrees of carboxymethyl substitution, were prepared to remove ofloxacin (OFL), a popular fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotic, from water. LNEs and LNECs exhibited satisfactory performance in OFL adsorption. Both of them had high adsorption capacity (the maximum contribution of 0.828 mmol/g), good anti-interference to some inorganic salts, and efficient regeneration and reuse performance. The crosslinking density and degree of carboxymethyl substitution strongly affected the content and distribution of oxygen-containing groups in these LN-based adsorbents, which played important roles in OFL adsorption. The pH dependencies of the adsorption performance of LNEs and LNECs indicated the involvement of multiple adsorption mechanisms, including hydrogen bond, electrostatic attraction, pi-pi electron-donor-acceptor interactions, and negative charge-assisted hydrogen bond. Different mechanisms were dominant under various pH levels, in a near neutral pH, the synergistic effect of electrostatic attraction and pi-pi interaction allows LINEs and LINECs to reach maximum adsorption capacity. Five FQs with similar structures and their two sub structural analogs were compared in terms of adsorption behavior and electrostatic potential by density functional theory using quantum chemical calculation. FQs with secondary amino groups and low pi electron cloud density readily bound to LN-based adsorbents. Hence, LNEs and LNECs were efficient and environment-friendly adsorbents.

Abstract:As emerging contaminants used for treating various tract infections, fluoroquinolones (such as enoxacin, ofloxacin, etc.) enter water bodies via point-source discharges of wastewater treatment plants and many of them raise environmental and health concerns. Herein, a novel adsorbent, derived from a useful renewable low-cost grapefruit peel, was prepared to investigate the adsorption behavior of fluoroquinolone antibiotics (enoxacin and ofloxacin). The obtained adsorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). Further, the equilibrium sorption of the adsorption process was analyzed with isotherm models and kinetic models. Under optimal adsorption conditions, equilibrium data conformed to the Elovich model, and the kinetics of adsorption was fitted well with Redlich-Peterson model. Combined with thermodynamic analysis, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bond, π-π stacking interaction were the possible adsorption mechanisms for both fluoroquinolone antibiotics onto the novel adsorbent. This work explored a promising adsorbent for the elimination of fluoroquinolone antibiotics in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Fluoroquinolone antibiotics in soil can cause serious antibiotic pollution. Adsorption is the main factor that influences their destination and transport of antibiotics. Therefore, research on the behaviour of antibiotics once they reach the soil environment is meaningful to design appropriate measures to reduce their potential risks. This research took levofloxacin (LVFX) as the research object and used a static adsorption experiment to study the adsorption behaviour of the vadose zone of silty clay on the North China Plain. The results showed that LVFX had high retention in silty clay, with an average adsorption ratio of more than 90%. Adsorption of LVFX on silty clay reached equilibrium in 24 h with an adsorption amount of 93.5 mg/kg at an initial LVFX concentration of 10 mg/L. Acidity, cations and soil organic matter could affect the adsorption of LVFX, with adsorption variation ratio of 3.3%, 3.4% and 0.6%, respectively. In addition, numerical simulation with Hydrus-1D was utilized, and the results show that LVFX may infiltrate into underground water through silty clay after 28 days and completely penetrate in 100 days.

Abstract:Drug chirality is attracting increasing attention because the enantiomers of the same chiral pharmaceutical usually exhibit different biological activities, metabolic pathways, and toxicities. The ubiquitous presence of microplastics (MPs) can enrich organic pollutants commonly found in the environment. However, knowledge about the enrichment of pharmaceutical enantiomers to MPs is relatively limited. We investigated the occurrence of enantioselectivity of ofloxacin (OFL) and levofloxacin (LEV) in the adsorption processes on polyethylene (PE) and the interactions influenced by environmental factors. The results showed that the adsorption efficiency of OFL was generally 3-5% (p < 0.05) higher than that of LEV, indicating the different affinities of the enantiomers to PE, but the adsorption process of OFL and LEV on PE was both well described by pseudo-first-order kinetics and liner isotherm models. The chirality of OFL and LEV was not affected by sizes of PE particles and solution salinity due to the identical physicochemical properties. An examination of pH effect indicated that OFL showed better acid-base adaptability than LEV. Moreover, the differences in enantiomeric enrichment between OFL and LEV on PE were promoted with increasing UV light exposure time and natural organic matter (NOM) concentrations. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), we demonstrated that the constituents of the functional groups in chiral NOM were greatly related to the enantiomer stereoselectivity of OFL, subsequently affecting their adsorption in a chiral environment. The excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectra confirmed the enantioselective behaviors of chiral pharmaceuticals under UV light due to the different optical activity and humic acid-like and fulvic acid-like molecular structure of the enantiomers. These findings imply that the enantioselectivity of drug enantiomers should be considered in presence of microplastics, leading to a more accurate environmental fate and risks assessments of chiral pharmaceuticals.

Abstract:Levofloxacin (LEV) is an antibiotic that has a negative ecotoxicological effect. Its mitigation from the aqueous environment is achievable by adsorption. The aim of this paper was to review the removal of LEV from aqueous media via adsorption. The goal was to carefully study the trends of research findings by various authors over the past two decades, analysing key results, observing trends and similarities and identifying interesting areas that future researchers should consider. It was observed that modified carbon-based adsorbents are the best class of adsorbent for LEV uptake. The highest reported adsorption capacity for LEV is 1111 mg/g for corncob–Ag NPs composite adsorbent. This was the only adsorbent that could remove more than its weight of LEV. The major mechanisms of uptake of LEV are π–π interactions, electrostatic interactions, complexation and hydrogen bonds. The Langmuir or Freundlich classical isotherm model was the best fit in most cases to describe the adsorption equilibrium. LEV is easily desorbed from various adsorbents, It possesses a desorption rate > 60% after the first regeneration cycle. Also, > 20% retention of original adsorption capacity can still be achieved after about 5 cycles. The uptake of LEV is seriously hampered (20–60% decrease) by salt competing species in the aqueous phase. Interesting areas for future research identified were the choice of eluent for desorption, the choice of competing species, and statistical physics modelling.Graphical abstract
Influence of Natural Organic Matter on the Transport and Deposition of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles in Saturated Porous Media.

Abstract:The significance of natural organic matter (NOM, both humic acid and alginate) on the transport and deposition kinetics of ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) in irregular quartz sand was examined by direct comparison of both breakthrough curves and retained profiles with NOM present in NPs suspension versus those obtained without NOM. Packed column experiments were conducted in both NaCl and CaCl2 solutions under a series of environmentally relevant ionic strengths. Under all examined conditions, breakthrough plateaus with NOM even at concentration as low as 1mgL−1 of total organic carbon (TOC) were higher than those without NOM, indicating that presence of NOM in NPs suspensions enhanced ZnO NPs transport. Although hyper-exponential retained profiles were observed both in the presence and absence of NOM, the amount of retained ZnO NPs acquired in the presence of NOM decreased slowly as the transport distance increased. Straining induced by concurrent aggregation is found to cause the hyper-exponential decrease. In the presence of NOM, electrosteric interaction effectively reduced the ZnO NPs deposition on collector surfaces and NPs–NPs aggregation. Subsequently, the amount of NPs that jammed in the column inlet in the absence of NOM were markedly decreased, which therefore exhibited as flatter retained profiles.
Unveiling the impact of low-molecular-weight organic acids on enrofloxacin sorption in North China agricultural soil: Insights and implications

Abstract:Low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) play a crucial role as components of dissolved organic matter in soil, influencing the sorption/desorption, degradation, and plant uptake of diverse pollutants within the agricultural soil ecosystem. This study delves into the sorption behavior and mechanism of the fluoroquinolone antibiotic enrofloxacin (ENR) on agricultural soil in North China, focusing on the impact of LMWOAs. Through batch equilibrium experiments, we explored the sorption/desorption kinetics of ENR under varying conditions such as temperature, pH, ion strength, and ion type, with the addition of acetic acid, oxalic acid, and citric acid individually. Our findings reveal that the sorption and desorption kinetics of ENR-whether with or without LMWOAs-conformed well to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (R2 ≥ 0.997). The presence of LMWOAs notably enhanced ENR sorption while impeding desorption in soil, with oxalic acid demonstrating the highest promotion effect followed by acetic acid and citric acid. Moreover, the sorption capacity and affinity of ENR decreased with rising solution pH, dropping from 96.8%-98.5% to 30.9%-34.4%. Acidic conditions favored ENR retention in soil, with inhibition of sorption escalating alongside increasing ionic strength. LMWOAs, soil solution pH, and coexisting ions emerge as pivotal factors shaping ENR sorption behavior. Furthermore, LMWOA presence intensified desorption hysteresis of ENR on soil, with a desorption hysteresis coefficient (HI) ≤ 0.124. These results suggest that LMWOAs restrict ENR mobility in the local soil environment, heightening the risk of its accumulation in soil and crops. This study offers valuable insights into the intricate interplay among LMWOAs, ENR sorption dynamics, and environmental outcomes, underscoring the importance of understanding such complexities in agricultural soil management.

Abstract:The wide use and occurrence of antibiotics in water environments have caused wide concerns. Ofloxacin (OFL) was selected as a target antibiotic, and the interaction between OFL and sequential extracted dissolved organic matter (DOM) from the sediment of Dianchi, a hypertrophic lake in Southwest China, was explored using fluorescence quenching technology. The method of fuorescence quenching was used to characterize the interaction between OFL and sequentially extracted DOM. The result indicated that static and dynamic quenching both existed in the interaction. The interaction in the background water (0.01 mol/L NaCl and 200 mg/L NaN3) became increasingly weak with the further extraction of DOM. A low non-linear factor N value (0.53∼0.63) of Freundlich model was observed, indicating a non-linear interaction between OFL and DOM. Elemental characterization and infrared spectrum analysis showed an enhanced OFL-DOM binding with the decrease in humic acid (HA) polarity. The effect of ion strength was tested in the OFL-DOM interaction to show the impact of usually existing metal ions in water environment on the OFL behavior. The result showed that K+ had little influence, but Cu2+ had a significant promotion (p < 0.05) in the OFL-DOM interaction in background water, indicating that divalent metal ions, which have the bridge bond or complexation capacity, are more active in the OFL-DOM interaction than monovalent ions, with no bridge bond or complexation capacity. This work would be useful in the fate and risk assessment of antibiotics in water environments.

Abstract:Magnetic carbon nanocomposite (MCN) was synthesized from waste biomass precursor, pineapple. The prepared adsorbent was characterized using different instrumental techniques and was used to remove levofloxacin (LEV) from effluents. The maximum sorption of LEV was observed at pH 7. Pseudo-2nd-order (PSO) kinetic was found to be the best model that fits well the adsorption kinetics data. For Langmuir adsorption isotherm, the R 2 value was higher as compared with other isotherms. The Van’t Hoff equation was used for thermodynamic parameters determinations. ΔS° (standard entropy) was positive and ΔG° (standard Gibb’s free energy) was negative: -0.37, -1.81, and -3.73 kJmol −1 corresponding to 25, 40, and 60°C. The negative values of ΔG° at different temperatures stipulate that the adsorption of LEV was spontaneous in nature and adsorbent has a considerable affinity for LEV molecules. The MCN was then utilized in hybrid way by connecting with ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes in series and as a result enhanced permeate fluxes were observed. The percent retention of LEV molecules was lower with UF membrane and with NF it was 96%, while it was 100% with RO. For MCN/UF and MCN/NF systems, improvement in % retention was recorded.

Abstract:Solid-phase denitrification has been applied for advanced nitrogen removal from wastewater and can co-degrade emerging pollutants. Fluoroquinolones (FQs), broad-spectral antibiotic, are frequently detected in the effluent of conventional wastewater treatment plants. However, it remains unclear whether solid-phase denitrifying bacteria can remove FQs. Thus, this study investigated the removal capacity of ofloxacin (OFX) as a representative of FQs and the microbial community structures of denitrifying sludge acclimated to polycaprolactone and OFX. The Results indicate that OFX had a negative effect on denitrification performance. OFX was degraded, and a possible pathway was revealed based on ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The dominant genera in the acclimated denitrifying sludge were Microbacterium, Simplicispira, Alicycliphilus, Reyranella, Sediminibacterium, Acidovorax and Thermomonas. Moreover, ABC transporters and cytochrome P450, related to multi-drug resistance and drug metabolism, were highly expressed in the acclimated sludge. This study provides novel insights into antibiotics control.

Abstract:A series of actinia-shaped lignin-based adsorbents (LNAEs) featuring lignin (LN) as the core and grafted poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) as the tentacle were designed and fabricated. Two fluoroquinolones (FQs) with similar molecular structures, ofloxacin (OFL) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), were used as targets to study the selective adsorption performance of LNAEs associated with the structural effects of the LN-based adsorbents in FQs binary aqueous system. The adsorption of the two FQs by LNAEs complied with the competitive Langmuir isothermal model, and showed selective removal of CIP over OFL due to the additional negative charge-assisted hydrogen bond (CAHB) formed between the carboxyl group of LNAEs and the secondary amino group of CIP, in addition to the effects of electrostatic attraction and normal hydrogen bonds, according to quantitative studies and density functional theory analysis. A binary nonlinear model based on phenomenological theory was applied to study the effects of PAA branched-chain length and distribution on the selective adsorption performance of the LN-based adsorbents. Accordingly, the branched-chain distribution played a more important role and higher distribution density of branched PAA could expose more adsorption sites on LNAEs' surface and improve the adsorptive selectivity. This study offers a well understanding of the structure-activity relationship of the surface grafting modified adsorbents in binary pollutant systems and fundamental guidance for the exploitation and design of novel and efficient adsorbents. Efficiency in Ofloxacin Antibiotic Water Remediation by Magnetic Zeolites Formed Combining Pure Sources and Wastes

Abstract:In this work, red mud (RM) and spinel iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were added to pure silica/alumina sources (SAs) and fly ash (FA) with the aim of synthesizing and investigating the magnetic behavior of different zeolites. SAs were used to synthesize zeolite with LTA topology (zeolite A) with the addition of both red mud and spinel iron oxide nanoparticles. FA and RM were mixed to synthesize sodalite whereas only FA with the addition of SPIONs was used to form zeolite with FAU-topology (zeolite X). All the synthetic products showed magnetic properties. However, zeolites with spinel iron oxide nanoparticles (zeolites A and X) showed ferromagnetic-like behavior. Sodalite was characterized by a reduction in saturation magnetization, whereas zeolite A with red mud displayed antiferromagnetic behavior. For the first time, all the synthetic products were tested for polluted water remediation by a persistent emerging contaminant, ofloxacin (OFL) antibiotic. The four zeolite types showed good adsorption affinity towards OFL under actual conditions (tap water, natural pH). All materials were also tested for OFL removal in real waters spiked with OFL 10 μg L−1. Satisfactory recoveries (90–92% in tap water, 83–87% in river water) were obtained for the two zeolites synthesized from industrial waste materials.

Abstract:Ferrihydrite acts as a natural reservoir for nutrient elements, organic matter, and coexisting pollutants through adsorption and coprecipitation. However, the degradation of emerging fluoroquinolone antibiotics during the transformation of ferrihydrite coprecipitates, especially those with various dissociated species, remains insufficiently explored. In this study, Enoxacin (ENO), employed as a model antibiotic, was introduced to prepare ferrihydrite-ENO coprecipitates. The influence of coprecipitated ENO on the transformation of the ferrihydrite-ENO coprecipitate was investigated across different pH conditions. The results revealed that ferrihydrite-ENO coprecipitates thermodynamically transformed into more stable goethite and/or hematite under all pH conditions. In neutral and alkaline conditions, ENO promoted the transformation of coprecipitates into goethite while hindering hematite formation. Conversely, under acidic conditions, ENO directly obstructed the transformation of coprecipitates into hematite. Different dissociated species of ENO displayed distinct degradation pathways. The cationic form of ENO exhibited a greater tendency for hydroxylation and defluorination, while the zwitterion form leaned toward piperazine ring oxidation, with limited preference for quinolone ring oxidation. The anionic form of ENO exhibited the fastest degradation rate. It is essential to emphasize that the toxicity of the degradation products was intricately connected to the specific reaction sites and the functional groups they acquired post-oxidation. These findings offer fresh insights into the role of antibiotics in coprecipitation, the transformation of ferrihydrite coprecipitates, and the fate of coexisting antibiotics.

Abstract:There is an increasing need to develop novel and high-efficiency water purification technologies. This work systematically evaluated the potential of using graphene oxide (GO) directly as filter media for the removal of levofloxacin (LEV), an emerging contaminate, and lead (Pb), a heavy metal, from aqueous solution. Batch and fixed-bed experiments were conducted to determine the sorption behaviors of LEV and Pb onto the GO. In the batch system, GO showed strong sorption of the two contaminants with Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of 256.6 and 227.2 mg g(-1), respectively. The removal of LEV and Pb by GO in fixed-bed columns was high under all tested conditions in both single and mixed solution systems. The removal efficiency of the two contaminants in the GO-sand columns increased with increasing GO content, but decreased with increasing injection flow rate. In the mixed solution system, although LEV and Pb competed for sorption, the GO media still had high removal efficiencies for them. The column experimental data were well described by the Bed Depth Service Time (BDST) model, suggesting the model can be used for the design of GO-sand filters in large-scale applications. Findings from this work demonstrated that GO is a promising nano-adsorbent that can be used as a high efficiency filter media in water treatment to remove hazardous metal elements and emerging contaminants.
