Abstract:Veterinary antibiotics reach the soil environment by manure application, where they accumulate or are prone to vertical translocation. We assumed that a high pH value at slightly calcareous soil properties should retain tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones even at high manure loads, whereas it should facilitate leaching of sulfonamides. Hence, we investigated the transport of manure-added antibiotics in a soil developed from calcareous parent material on a farm in peri-urban Beijing, China. Leachate was collected from zero-tension samplers, installed at 40cm depth under undisturbed soil, which was treated according to (i) routine farm practice and (ii) worst-case conditions (high antibiotic concentrations, irrigation imitating heavy rainfall). Additionally, the soil depth distribution of pharmaceuticals at the end of the leaching experiment was analysed. Under routine farm practice, sulfamethazine was repeatedly detected in the leachate with a maximum concentration of 0.12μgL−1. All applied substances were still detected in soil after 53days, suggesting that there was no overall rapid and complete dissipation. Worst-case conditions enhanced vertical translocation; all leachate samples contained sulfonamides (up to 653μgL−1 sulfamethazine), and even tetracyclines were found in the leachate once, with doxycycline reaching the highest concentration (0.19μgL−1). The concentrated simultaneous occurrence of sulfonamides with the bromide tracer in leachate samples pointed to preferential flow as underlying transport process. The high pH values did not prevent the single leaching event for tetracyclines and hardly affected overall leaching behaviour. The applied fluoroquinolones were not significantly translocated below 4cm depth, irrespective of irrigation and high manure addition.
Adsorption and Transport Characteristics of Two Exterior-Source Antibiotics in Some Agricultural Soils

Abstract:Antibiotics used in livestock production may be present in manure and slurry as the parent compound and/or metabolites.The environments may therefore be exposed to these antibiotics due to the application of animal manure to agricultural land.In order to understand the potential effects of long-term application of antibiotics-contained animal manure on agricultural soils,laboratory studies were conducted to characterize two typical antibiotic compounds(tylosin,C46H77NO17 and oxytetracycline,C22H24N2O9HCl) with regard to sorption and transport in seven agricultural soils,collected from the Changjiang and Zhujiang deltas of China.Both transfer and adsorption behaviors of the antibiotics were related with species of antibiotics and soil properties.Distribution coefficients(Kd values) determined by botch equilibrium method varied between 43L kg-1 and 3018L kg-1 for oxytetracyclin,and 2.3L kg-1 and 175L kg-1 for tylosin.Oxytetracyclin was more strongly sorbed in all the soils investigated than tylosin.The adsorption amount of antibiotic compounds on the soils was correlated positively with the contents of clay,organic matter and iron oxides.Soil column leaching experiments indicated that there were a significant difference in the transport of the two antibiotic compounds between sandy soil and clayey soil,which due to the difference in their respective sorption capabilities.Very low concentrations of the two antibiotic compounds were detected in the leachates from clayey soil column,indicating a much lower mobility of antibiotics in the clayey soil.However,significant amount of tylosin compound was recovered in the leachates from sandy soil,indicating that tylosin compound was not stable in sandy soil,and it had a high mobility in the soil.

Abstract:Many antibiotics regarded as emerging contaminants have been frequently detected in soils and groundwater; however, their transport behaviors in soils remain largely unknown. This study examined the transport of two antibiotics, sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and ciprofloxacin (CIP), in saturated porous media. Laboratory columns packed with quartz sand was used to test the effects of solution pH and ionic strength (IS) on their retention and transport. The results showed that these two antibiotics behaved differently in the saturated sand columns. In general, SMZ manifested a much higher mobility than CIP for all experimental conditions tested. Almost all SMZ transported through the columns within one pore volume in deionized water (i.e., pH=5.6, IS=0), but no CIP was detected in the effluents under the same condition after extended column flushing. Perturbations in solution pH (5.6 and 9.5) and IS (0 and 0.1M) showed no effect on SMZ transport in the saturated columns. When pH increased to 9.5, however, ~93% of CIP was eluted from the sand columns. Increase of IS from 0 to 0.1M also slightly changed the distribution of adsorbed CIP within the sand column at pH 5.6, but still no CIP was detected in the effluents. A mathematical model based on advection–dispersion equation coupled with equilibrium and kinetic reactions successfully simulated the transport of the antibiotics in water-saturated porous media with R2=0.99.

Abstract:The improved understanding of the behavior of antibiotics in soil is of great importance due to their environmental hazard and frequent detection. In this work, the adsorption-desorption and mobility behaviors of ciprofloxacin in sandy silt soil, affecting the fate of ciprofloxacin in the environment, were studied by a series of batch tests and column tests. In batch tests, the effects of contact time, initial ciprofloxacin concentration, sandy silt soil dosage, solution pH, and ionic strength on ciprofloxacin adsorption and desorption in sandy silt soil were considered. Adsorption results were satisfactorily modeled, with good fittings to the pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.999) and Langmuir model (R2 > 0.991), with the value for Langmuir’s maximum adsorption capacity (qm) 5.50 mg g−1. Ciprofloxacin adsorption decreased sharply by increasing the pH from 7.0 to 10.0 and the ionic strength from 0.01 to 0.2 mol L−1 CaCl2. Comparatively, ciprofloxacin was more readily desorbed from sandy silt soil at alkaline and high ionic strength conditions. Breakthrough curves of ciprofloxacin obtained from the column experiments were described by the two-site model, Thomas model, and Yan mode. Of these models, the two-site model was the most suitable to describe the mobility of ciprofloxacin. The retardation factor (R) obtained in the two-site model was 345, suggesting strong adsorption affinity with ciprofloxacin on the sandy silt soil surface. The results from the Thomas model suggested the extremely small external and internal diffusion resistances. The Yan model was not suitable. Cation exchange interaction, electrostatic interaction, mechanical resistance, entrapment between porous media, and gravity sedimentation were proposed to be the important adsorption mechanisms.

Abstract:Retention and transport of sulfonamides (SAs) in subsurface can strongly affect groundwater quality. In this work, a range of laboratory batch sorption and column transport experiments were conducted to determine the effect of cation type in mixed Ca-Na systems on the retention and transport of two typical SAs, sulfadimethoxine (SDM) and sulfacetamide (SCA), in saturated limestone porous media. Column experimental data showed divalent cation Ca2+ played a more important role than monovalent cation Na+ in decreasing the transport of only SDM in co-cation systems in the saturated limestone media. Further, in the single-cation (i.e., including either Ca2+ or Na+) system, increasing ionic strength (IS) of either NaCl or CaCl2 had little effect on SCA transport; however, increasing of IS of CaCl2 promoted the retention of SDM in the saturated limestone porous media. This is mainly due to the cation bridging effect of Ca2+ on SDM and limestone. Overall, SDM showed much higher retention in the limestone columns than SCA, which can be attributed to the two SAs' different physicochemical properties. Moreover, limestone showed stronger ability to retain the two SAs than quartz sand. Findings in this study suggest that cation type and the concentration of certain electrolyte (e.g., CaCl2) as well as medium type play an important role in controlling the environmental fate and transport of antibiotics.
Impact of Water Saturation on the Fate and Mobility of Antibiotics in Reactive Porous Geomedia

Abstract:Understanding contaminant transport through unsaturated porous media is a considerable challenge, given the complex interplay of nonlinear physical and biogeochemical processes driven by variations in water saturation. In this study, we tackled this challenge through a series of column experiments involving fine (100-300 μm) and coarse (1.0-1.4 mm) sand particles coated with birnessite (MnO2) under variable saturation degrees. Dynamic flow experiments in sand columns revealed that desaturation altered the ability of MnO2 in removing tetracycline (TTC), a redox-active antibiotic, yet the effect depends on the sand type and then on the saturation degree. Moderate saturation degrees in fine-grained sand columns promoted fractional and preferential water flow which favored a more acidic pH and increased dissolved oxygen levels. These conditions enhanced TTC removal, despite the reduced physical accessibility of reactive phases. In contrast, lower saturation degrees in coarse-grained sand columns induced stronger flow heterogeneity with a very small fraction of the water content participating in flow. The mobility behavior of all the columns was predicted using transport models that consider TTC adsorption and transformation, as well as dual porosity under variable water saturation degrees. This research offers valuable insights into predicting the fate and transport of redox-active contaminants in unsaturated soils and subsurface environments.

Abstract:Owing to their widespread use, sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs), an important class of emerging pollutants, have caused significant ecological disruption. Both acid deposition and salinization of soil may have an impact on migration and degradation of antibiotics. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX), has a migration and transformation process in the environment that is closely dependent on environmental pH. Nevertheless, scarcely any studies have been conducted on the effect of soil pH changes on the environmental behavior of sulfamethoxazole. To investigate the impact of different pH levels on the migratory mechanisms and degradation pathways of SMX within soil systems, indoor soil column leaching experiments were conducted. Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF–MS) were used to analyse the dynamic changes in the content of SMX as well as to identify its degradation products. The results showed that acidic conditions constrained the vertical migration of antibiotics in the soil. These transformations ensued through a sequence of reaction processes, encompassing ring opening, hydroxylation, S-C bond breaking, and the oxidation of aniline groups. The study of the migration and transformation of sulfamethoxazole under different pH conditions can lay a solid theoretical foundation for the assessment of the pollution risk of sulfamethazine degradation products under acid rain and salt and alkali conditions, so as to better prevent and protect underground water resources.

Abstract:Fluoroquinolone antibiotics in soil can cause serious antibiotic pollution. Adsorption is the main factor that influences their destination and transport of antibiotics. Therefore, research on the behaviour of antibiotics once they reach the soil environment is meaningful to design appropriate measures to reduce their potential risks. This research took levofloxacin (LVFX) as the research object and used a static adsorption experiment to study the adsorption behaviour of the vadose zone of silty clay on the North China Plain. The results showed that LVFX had high retention in silty clay, with an average adsorption ratio of more than 90%. Adsorption of LVFX on silty clay reached equilibrium in 24 h with an adsorption amount of 93.5 mg/kg at an initial LVFX concentration of 10 mg/L. Acidity, cations and soil organic matter could affect the adsorption of LVFX, with adsorption variation ratio of 3.3%, 3.4% and 0.6%, respectively. In addition, numerical simulation with Hydrus-1D was utilized, and the results show that LVFX may infiltrate into underground water through silty clay after 28 days and completely penetrate in 100 days.

Abstract:Animal manure application is a main spreading route of veterinary antibiotics in soil and groundwater. The sorption and leaching behavior of five commonly used sulfonamides in five typical soil and soil/manure mixtures from China were investigated in this study. Results showed that the empirical Freundlich equation fits well the sorption behavior of selected sulfonamides (r(2) was between 0.803 and 0.999, 1/n was between 0.68 and 1.44), and pH and soil organic carbon (OC) were the key impact factors to sorption and leaching. Addition of manure was found to increase the Kd values of sulfonamides in five different soils, following the rules that the more polar substances, the more increased extent of sorption after manure amendment (5.87 times for sulfadiazine with Log Kow = -0.09, and 2.49 times for sulfamethoxazole with Log Kow = 0.89). When the simulated rainfall amount reached 300 mL (180 mm), sulfonamides have high migration potential to the groundwater, especially in the soil with low OC and high pH. However, manure amendment increased the sorption capacity of sulfonamides in the top layer, thus it might play a role in decreasing the mobility of sulfonamides in soils. The systematic study would be more significant to assess the ecological risks and suggest considering the influence of manure amendment for the environmental fate of antibiotics.

Abstract:The Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction (JHR) observed after antibiotic treatment of relapsing fever caused by Borrelia recurrentis is associated with the systemic appearance of cytokines. The decrease of cytokine production and block of JHR was attempted by administering pentoxifylline prior to antibiotic treatment. Fifteen patients with confirmed relapsing fever were infused intravenously with pentoxifylline 90 min before intramuscular injection of penicillin; 4 patients were not treated with pentoxifylline. All patients developed JHR to varying degrees. Treatment with pentoxifylline failed to prevent fever, increase in pulse, respiration, or blood pressure, or decrease in white blood cell count. No reduction of circulating levels of tumor necrosis factor, interleukin 6, or interleukin-8 was observed with pentoxifylline treatment. Pentoxifylline did not prevent clearance of the B. recurrentis spirochetes. Thus, pentoxifylline treatment of patients with relapsing fever fails to prevent or diminish JHR or the associated cytokine release observed after appropriate antibiotic treatment.
Cotransport of Microplastics and Sulfanilamide Antibiotics in Groundwater: the Impact of MP/SA Ratio and Aquifer Media

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of the aquifer media, structure type, and initial concentration ratio of contaminants on the cotransport behavior of microplastics (MPs) and sulfanilamide antibiotics (SAs) through a series of one-dimensional column experiments in groundwater. Under a single suspension system, the relative mass recovery rates of fine sand, medium sand, and coarse sand were 25.65%, 37.50%, and 57.91%, respectively. The breakthrough curve of MPs showed a weak and slow upward trend, indicating that the migration of MPs in aqueous media is mainly blocked by the surface. The migration results of different structure type on SAs (ST, SM, SM2, SMX) in a single suspension system indicated that the deposition rate coefficients (k(c)) of the four SAs were 1.23 x 10(-1), 9.09 x 10(-2), 1.11 x 10(-1), and 8.87 x 10(-2). Under a binary suspension system (MPs:ST = 1:1), the maximum effluent concentration (MEC) of MPs in fine sand, medium sand, and coarse sand increased to 0.52, 0.64, and 0.88, respectively, and the relative mass recovery rates of ST were 22.79%, 23.59%, 20.25%. This results show that the coexistence of MPs and SAs significantly promotes the migration of MPs and inhibits that of SAs. It is mainly because of their carrier action, adsorption sites and additional deposit sites for MPs through SAs pre-deposition on media. When the initial concentration ratio was 2:1, the particles had the highest Zeta potential (-48.3 mV) and the highest potential barrier (3200 kBT), leading to the formation of complex aggregates (MPs-SAs-MPs) owing to the aggregation of colloidal MPs. The increase in the volume and number of MPs-SAs co-aggregates on the surface of the media as the initial concentration of MPs increases, which was mainly due to the disappearance of surface blocking effect and the occurrence of filtering maturation effect.

Abstract:Identification of the transport of sulfonamide antibiotics in soils facilitates a better understanding of the environmental fate and behaviors of these ubiquitous contaminants. In this study, the mobility properties of sulfanilamide (SNM, a typical sulfonamide antibiotic) through saturated soils with different physicochemical characteristics were investigated. The results showed that the physicochemical characteristics controlled SNM mobility. Generally, the mobility of SNM was positively correlated with CEC values and soil organic matter content, which was mainly related to the interactions between the organic matter in soils and SNM molecules via π-π stacking, H-bonding, ligand exchange, and hydrophobic interaction. Furthermore, higher clay mineral content and lower sand content were beneficial for restraining SNM transport in the soils. Unlike Na + , Cu 2+ ions could act as bridging agents between the soil grains and SNM molecules, contributing to the relatively weak transport of SNM. Furthermore, the trend of SNM mobility in different soil columns was unaffected by solution pH (5.0–9.0). Meanwhile, for a given soil, the SNM mobility was promoted as the solution pH values increased, which was caused by the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between SNM – species and soil particles as well as the declined hydrophobic interaction between SNM and soil organic matter. The obtained results provide helpful information for the contribution of soil physicochemical characteristics to the transport behaviors of sulfonamide antibiotics in soil-water systems.

Abstract:Sulfonamide antibiotics (SAs) are widely used antimicrobial agents in livestock and aquaculture, and most of them entering the animal's body will be released into the environment as prodrugs or metabolites, which ultimately affect human health through the food chain. Both acid deposition and salinization of soil may have an impact on the migration and degradation of antibiotics. Sulfamethazine (SM2), a frequently detected compound in agricultural soils, has a migration and transformation process in the environment that is closely dependent on environmental pH. Nevertheless, scarcely any studies have been conducted on the effect of soil pH changes on the environmental behavior of sulfamethazine. We analyzed the migration and degradation mechanisms of SM2 using simulation experiments and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Q-TOF-MS) techniques. The results showed that acidic conditions limited the vertical migration of sulfadimidine, and SM2 underwent different reaction processes under different pH conditions, including S-C bond breaking, S-N bond hydrolysis, demethylation, six-membered heterocyclic addition, methyl hydroxylation and ring opening. The study of the migration pattern and degradation mechanism of SM2 under different pH conditions can provide a solid theoretical basis for assessing the pollution risk of sulfamethazine degradation products under acid rain and saline conditions, and provide a guideline for remediation of antibiotic contamination, so as to better prevent, control and protect groundwater resources.
Influence of microplastics on the transport of antibiotics in sand filtration investigated by AFM force spectroscopy

Abstract:Microplastics and antibiotics were frequently detected in the effluent of sand filtration, while the presence of microplastics may change the interactions between the antibiotics and the quartz sands. However, the influence of microplastics on the transport of antibiotics in sand filtration has not been revealed. In this study, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) were respectively grafted on AFM probes to determine the adhesion forces to the representative microplastics (PS and PE) and the quartz sand. CIP and SMX exhibited low and high mobilities in the quartz sands, respectively. Com-positional analysis of the adhesion forces indicated that the lower mobility of CIP in sand filtration columns could be at-tributed to the electrostatic attraction between the quartz sand and CIP compared with repulsion for SMX. Moreover, the significant hydrophobic interaction between the microplastics and the antibiotics could be responsible for the competitive adsorption of the antibiotics to the microplastics from the quartz sands; meanwhile, the pi-pi interaction further enhanced the adsorption of PS to the antibiotics. As a result of the high mobility of microplastics in the quartz sands, the carrying effect of microplastics enhanced the transport of antibiotics in the sand filtration columns regardless of their original mo-bilities. This study provided insights into the mechanism of the microplastics on enhancing the transport of antibiotics in sand filtration systems from the perspective of the molecular interaction.

Abstract:PurposeSulfonamides with high mobility in the soil pose a significant threat to environmental ecology and human health. Organic matter is known to affect the sorption and transport of these antibiotics in soil, although the mechanism remains unclear. In this study, the effects of humic acid (HA) on the transport of sulfadiazine (SDZ) in soil were investigated to advance the understanding on the fate of SDZ in soil.Materials and methodsColumn experiments were conducted in combination with batch sorption experiments. The sorption and transport of SDZ in soil were simulated by the convection–dispersion model coupled with a linear sorption isotherm and kinetic adsorption processes. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to evaluate the molecular interactions and mechanisms of sorption.Results and discussionThe sorption isotherms conformed to a linear model with low distribution coefficients (Kd = 9.84 L/kg). Increasing the HA content led to increased sorption and inhibited transport of SDZ in soil. The sorption of SDZ on HA decreased with increasing pH and decreasing ionic strength. The mechanisms mainly comprised hydrophobic partition, hydrogen bonding, complexation, and π-π interactions. Mineral clays also played an important role in the sorption of SDZ on soil. The sorption and transport of SDZ were adequately described by the model, which demonstrated that as the HA content of the soil increased, the sorption capacity for SDZ and proportion of the time-dependent kinetic adsorption process both increased. Retained SDZ could also release slowly into the surrounding medium posing a longer-term risk to the environment.ConclusionsHumic acid increases the retention of SDZ in soil due to its high sorption capacity for SDZ. The sorption of SDZ on HA is dependent on solution chemistry such as pH and ionic strength. However, the retained SDZ would release slowly into the soil solution later. Thus, time-dependent sorption should be prioritized over sorption capacity in studies assessing the environmental fate and eco-toxicity of SDZ.

New Models for Estimating the Sorption of Sulfonamide and Tetracycline Antibiotics in Soils

Abstract:Sulfonamides (SAs) and tetracyclines (TCs) are two classes of widely used antibiotics. There is a lack of easy models for estimating the parameters of antibiotic sorption in soils. In this work, a dataset of affinity coefficients (Kf and Kd) of seven SA/TC antibiotics (i.e., sulfachlorpyridazine, sulfamethazine, sulfadiazine, sulfamethoxazole, oxytetracycline, tetracycline, and chlortetracycline) and associated soil properties was generated. Correlation analysis of these data showed that the affinity coefficients of the SAs were predominantly affected by soil organic matter and cation exchange capacity, while those of the TCs were largely affected by soil organic matter and pH. Pedotransfer functions for estimating Kf and Kd were built by multiple linear regression analysis and were satisfactorily validated. Their performances would be better for soils having higher organic matter content and lower pH. These pedotransfer functions can be used to aid environmental risk assessment, prioritization of antibiotics and identification of vulnerable soils.

Abstract:<p>Vadose zone is an important channel for sulfonamide contamination into groundwater, and the processes of adsorption and migration in the vadose zone are complicated. In this study, we focused on three sulfonamide antibiotics (sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine and sulfamethoxypyridazine) in the groundwater of Limin drinking water resource in northeastern China and assessed their migration potential in aquifers. Analysis was based on adsorption batch tests, a column experiment. Some key influencing factors including pH, iron, manganese and ammonia were considered. The results showed that the concentration of sulfamethoxypyridazine in groundwater is higher, ranging between 7 and 30 ng/L, the concentrations of sulfamethoxazole and sulfamethazine are relatively lower and no more than 1 ng/L. The adsorption capacity of the three antibiotics on vadose zone materials shows the following order: sulfamethoxypyridazine > sulfamethazine > sulfamethoxazole. Furthermore, for the three sulfonamides, the adsorption is higher in the medium of 0–20 cm (finer particle size, higher clay content and lower sand content) than that in 80–100 cm. Coexisting ions (iron, manganese and ammonia) promote the adsorption of sulfonamides, and the adsorption of sulfonamides decreases as the water pH increases. The column experiment also shows that the three sulfonamides have strong migration abilities and pose a considerable risk to groundwater.</p>

Leaching of Sulfadiazine and Florfenicol in an Entisol of a Chicken-Raising Orchard: Impact of Manure-Derived Dissolved Organic Matter

Abstract:Antibiotic pollution from manured farmland soils is a major public concern, and their potential interaction with manure particles and/or manure–dissolved organic matter (DOM) often complicates their leaching behaviour. This study investigated the leaching of sulfadiazine (SDZ) and florfenicol (FFC) with manure-DOM in undisturbed field lysimeters and repacked soil columns under natural and simulated rainfall conditions. The results showed that manure-DOM reduced SDZ mass flux, but soil hydrological processes and heavy rainfall events led to accelerated leaching. FFC was more prone to leaching in a manured plot (0.48 μg m−2 h−1) compared to the control (0.12 μg m−2 h−1), suggesting DOM facilitated transport of FFC in the field lysimeter study via cotransport mechanisms favored by abundant macropores in the study site. In contrast, SDZ and FFC mobility were reduced in repacked soil columns under manure-DOM conditions, suggesting complexation and adsorption in matrix pores. Two kinetic site models and two-site nonequilibrium adsorption models revealed the existence of nonequilibrium conditions and kinetic sorption processes in the repacked column. FFC exhibited lower leaching potential compared to SDZ in both the repacked column and natural field conditions. Redundancy analyses revealed that FFC had a close relationship with humic-like components (C1 and C3), but SDZ was more related to the protein-like components (C2) of DOM. The presence of manure-DOM may decrease the ecological risks of highly mobile antibiotics under matrix flow through complexations and adsorption. However, a similar scenario in macroporous flow under heavy rainfalls may lead to accelerated leaching.

Abstract:The mobility of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) in saturated aquifers is possibly affected by the presence of biosurfactants, which are widespread in the aquatic/soil environments. This study investigated the mobility characteristics of various tetracyclines-specifically tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlortetracycline (CTC)-within quartz sand columns in the presence of rhamnolipid, a common biosurfactant. Exogenous rhamnolipid significantly inhibited the transport of the three TCs over the pH range of 5.0-9.0 (e.g., the mass of retained TC, OTC, and CTC increased from 32.6 %, 26.9 %, and 39.2 % (in the absence rhamnolipid) to 39.4 %, 38.9 %, and 51.7 % (in the presence of rhamnolipid), respectively). This observation could be attributed to the bridging effects of this biosurfactant. Specifically, the hydrophilic head of rhamnolipid molecules is likely associated with the surfaces of sand grains through surface complexation and/or hydrogen bonding interactions. Accordingly, the hydrophobic moieties of the deposited rhamnolipid molecules (i.e., the aliphatic chains) interact with the hydrophobic groups of TCs molecules via hydrophobic interactions. Interestingly, the extent of the inhibitory effect on CTC mobility was greater than that on OTC and TC, which was related to the different hydrophobic characteristics of the three antibiotics. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of rhamnolipid on the transport of TCs diminished as the pH of the background solution increased. This observation was attributed to the weakened bridging effects, resulting from the reduced deposition of the biosurfactant on the sand surfaces. Additionally, the cation-bridging mechanism involved in the retention of TCs in the addition of rhamnolipid when the background electrolyte was Ca2+ (i.e., Ca2+ ions served as bridging agents between the deposited rhamnolipid molecules and TCs). The insightful findings enhance our understanding of the critical roles of biosurfactants in influencing the environmental dynamics and ultimate fate of conventional antibiotic pollutants within groundwater systems.
