Abstract:A new noninvasive method is presented for laboratory characterization of fractures in permeable media using relaxation-weighted NMR imaging techniques. The method is based on the fact that relaxation rates in fractures and those in surrounding porous matrix are substantially different. Thus, by selectively suppressing imaging signals from either fractures or porous matrix, one can highlight fluid distributions in either of these regions so that fractures can be unambiguously identified and surrounding porous structures can be characterized. The advantages over conventional NMR spin-echo imaging are demonstrated. We also demonstrate that the technique can be used to speed acquisitions of images of fluid distributions in porous matrix. In addition, a two-phase displacement experiment was conducted to investigate transport features related to fractured systems.

Acupuncture is gaining popularity as an alternative treatment to manage weight. This research aims to update and synthesize the evidence of acupuncture therapies from systematic reviews for treating overweight and obesity. Methods: Nine databases were searched from their inception to March 2022. Overweight or obesity was classified using standard diagnostic criteria. Published systematic reviews that included randomized controlled trials and quasi-randomized studies were eligible. Quality was assessed via the AMSTAR-2 scale and risk of bias using the ROBIS tool. Results: Thirty-eight systematic reviews were identified. Acupuncture therapies and auricular acupoint stimulation showed benefits in terms of reducing body weight and body mass index. Catgut embedding therapy and abdominal acupuncture are currently not in widespread use with insufficient evidence. Acupuncture therapies appear to be safe. Most of the reviews were assessed as having high risk of bias and low confidence in the findings. Conclusion: There is a need for larger and more methodologically sound randomized controlled trials to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture therapies for individuals who are affected by overweight or obesity. Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice

Abstract:Background and purpose: Most type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients are accompanied by overweight or obesity, and it is difficult to concurrently solve these two issues with conventional treatment regimens without experiencing adverse effects. While clinical practice demonstrates that acupuncture is beneficial in treating obesity combined with T2DM, there is a lack of evidence-based medicine to support this claim. The study aims to systematically evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in treating obesity combined with T2DM. Methods By searching eight electronic databases, we collected randomized controlled trials on acupuncture in treating obesity combined with T2DM. Two reviewers independently screened the literature, extracted the data, and assessed the risk of bias in the included studies. Meta-analysis was then performed using RevMan 5.4 software. Results A total of 13 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 993 patients were eventually included. Meta-analysis results demonstrated the effective rate of clinical symptoms: [RR = 1.19, 95% CI: 1.11, 1.28, P < 0.00001]; body mass index: [MD = −2.11, 95% CI: −2.56, −1.66, P < 0.00001]; fasting plasma glucose: [MD = −1.09, 95% CI: −1.60, −0.59, P < 0.00001]; haemoglobin A1c: [MD = −0.58, 95% CI: −0.95, −0.20, P = 0.002]; triglyceride: [MD = −0.29, 95% CI: −0.46, −0.11, P = 0.001]; waist circumference: [MD = −5.36, 95% CI: −8.68, −2.05, P = 0.002]; body fat rate: [MD = −3.59, 95% CI: −4.28, −2.90, P < 0.00001]. Conclusion Current evidence suggests that acupuncture has advantages in treating obesity combined with T2DM. However, due to low-quality evidence of included research, additional large-sample and high-quality research are required to validate the findings of this study.

Abstract:Objective: This study aims to systematically evaluate the curative efficacy of different acupuncture methods in the treatment of obesity combined with insulin resistance in randomized clinical trials (RCTs) by network meta-analysis. Methods: Four Chinese databases (CNKI, WanFang Data, VIP, and SinoMed) and four English databases (PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and www.clinicaltrial.gov) were electronically searched to identify qualified studies. Two reviewers independently screened the literature in accordance with the inclusion/exclusion criteria by EndNote 20 software and extracted data by ADDIS1.16.8 software, and then the risk of bias of the included studies were evaluated by the Cochrane tool. Network meta-analysis was performed by Stata 15.1 software. The primary outcomes included fasting blood glucose (FBG), fasting serum insulin (FINS), homeostasis model assessment—insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and body mass index (BMI). The secondary outcomes included waistline, waist–hip ratio, triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). Results: Five RCTs with a total of 410 patients with obesity combined with insulin resistance were included. The results of the network meta-analysis showed that, compared with the control group, three kinds of acupuncture methods (electropuncture, acupoint catgut embedding, and acupuncture point patch) had significant efficacy in reducing FBG [electropuncture (MD = -0.44, 95% CI: -0.83, -0.05) and acupoint catgut embedding (MD = -0.36, 95% CI: -0.51, -0.21)], FINS [electropuncture (MD = -6.17, 95% CI: -9.69, -2.65), acupoint catgut embedding (MD = -5.87, 95% CI: -6.92, -4.82), and acupuncture point patch (MD = -5.86, 95% CI: -11.40, -0.32)], HOMA-IR [electropuncture (MD = -1.59, 95% CI: -2.73, -0.45) and acupoint catgut embedding (MD =-0.91, 95% CI: -1.07, -0.75)], BMI [electropuncture (MD = -1.68, 95% CI: -2.70, -0.66), acupoint catgut embedding (MD = -3.39, 95% CI: -4.38, -2.40), and acupuncture point patch [MD = -2.90, 95%CI: -4.93, -0.87)], and waistline [electropuncture (MD = -5.49, 95% CI: -8.56, -2.42) and acupoint catgut embedding (MD = -4.91, 95% CI: -7.51, -2.31)] in obese patients with insulin resistance, suggesting that their efficacy was better than that of the western medicine group in some of the outcome indicators. For the index related to blood lipid, the efficacy of electropuncture was significantly better than behavioral therapy and western medicine. Except that acupoint catgut embedding was superior to electroacupuncture in reducing the BMI, there was no statistically significant difference in efficacy among the three acupuncture methods. Conclusions: The results showed that the therapeutic effect of acupuncture methods was superior to conventional western treatment alone. Abstract:Objective. To evaluate the clinical efficacy of acupoint catgut embedding in the treatment of simple obesity through network meta-analysis. Methods. PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang, and VIP database (VIP) were searched by using computer from 2011 to August 2021, and 35 RCT studies were retrieved. The quality of the literature was evaluated using the modified Jadad scoring table, and Stata 15.0 software was used for traditional meta-analysis and network meta-analysis. Results. Thirty-five RCTs (3040 cases in total) were included. Acupoint embedding, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, TCM, acupoint embedding + acupuncture, acupoint embedding + exercise diet therapy, acupoint embedding + TCM, exercise diet therapy, acupoint embedding + moxibustion, and acupoint embedding + cupping were investigated in the studies. The results of network meta-analysis were as follows: in terms of total effective rate, acupoint catgut embedding was superior to acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and exercise diet therapy ( P < 0.05 ); electroacupuncture, acupoint catgut embedding + acupuncture, acupoint catgut embedding + exercise diet therapy, acupoint catgut + TCM, acupoint catgut + moxibustion, and acupoint catgut + cupping were superior to acupuncture ( P < 0.05 ); acupoint catgut + moxibustion was superior to electroacupuncture ( P < 0.05 ); acupoint catgut + TCM, acupoint catgut + moxibustion, and acupoint catgut + cupping were superior to TCM treatment ( P < 0.05 ); and electroacupuncture, acupoint catgut, acupoint catgut + acupuncture, acupoint catgut + exercise diet therapy, acupoint catgut + TCM, acupoint catgut embedding + moxibustion, and acupoint catgut embedding + cupping were superior to sports diet therapy ( P < 0.05 ). Regarding weight loss, acupuncture treatment was superior to acupoint catgut embedding therapy ( P < 0.05 ); acupoint catgut embedding + exercise diet therapy, acupoint catgut embedding + TCM, acupoint catgut embedding + moxibustion, and acupoint catgut embedding + cupping were superior to acupuncture and electroacupuncture treatment ( P < 0.05 ); acupoint catgut embedding + exercise diet therapy, acupoint catgut embedding + TCM, and acupoint catgut embedding + moxibustion were superior to TCM treatment ( P < 0.05 ); and acupoint catgut embedding, acupoint catgut embedding + acupuncture, catgut embedding + exercise diet therapy, acupoint catgut embedding + TCM, acupoint catgut embedding + moxibustion, and acupoint catgut embedding + cupping were superior to exercise diet therapy ( P < 0.05 ). In terms of BMI reduction, acupoint catgut embedding + moxibustion and acupoint catgut embedding + cupping were more evident than acupuncture treatment ( P < 0.05 ); and acupoint catgut embedding + moxibustion was more evident than electroacupuncture treatment ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusion. Acupoint catgut embedding and its combination with other therapies are the first choice for the treatment of simple obesity.

Abstract:Background Obesity is a major public health issue in China and around the world. While acupuncture is often used in clinical practice, there is a lack of conclusive evidence for its weight-loss effect. Thus we will conduct a parallel, randomised, sham-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for treating obesity. Methods and analysis A total of 160 eligible participants with obesity will be randomly assigned to the verum acupuncture group or sham acupuncture group at a ratio of 1:1. All participants will be treated three times a week for a duration of 12 weeks, and followed up for another 16 weeks. The primary outcome is the percentage change in body weight from baseline to Week 12. The secondary outcomes include body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), body fat percentage (BF%), blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, insulin, glycosylated haemoglobin A1c, blood lipids, and physical functioning score on the Short Form 36 Health Survey. Other secondary outcomes including psychological and social functions will also be evaluated using the body image scale, psychological function scale, and social function scale of the BODY-Q, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire. BMI, WC, BF% and blood pressure will be evaluated at Week 0, 4, 8, 12 and 28. Other secondary outcomes will be measured at Week 0, 12 and 28, respectively. Adverse events will be recorded in detail during the trial. Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval of this trial was granted by the Ethics Committee of Chengdu Sport University (2023–102). Written informed consent will be obtained from study participants before enrolment. The findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed journals. Abstract:The American Journal of Chinese Medicine, Ahead of Print. Obesity is a common metabolic syndrome that causes a significant burden on individuals and society. Conventional therapies include lifestyle interventions, bariatric surgery, and pharmacological therapies, which are not effective and have a high risk of adverse events. Acupuncture is an effective alternative for obesity, it modulates the hypothalamus, sympathetic activity and parasympathetic activity, obesity-related hormones (leptin, ghrelin, insulin, and CCK), the brain-gut axis, inflammatory status, adipose tissue browning, muscle blood flow, hypoxia, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) to influence metabolism, eating behavior, motivation, cognition, and the reward system. However, hypothalamic regulation by acupuncture should be further demonstrated in human studies using novel techniques, such as functional MRI (fMRI), positron emission tomography (PET), electroencephalogram (EEG), and magnetoencephalography (MEG). Moreover, a longer follow-up phase of clinical trials is required to detect the long-term effects of acupuncture. Also, future studies should investigate the optimal acupuncture therapeutic option for obesity. This review aims to consolidate the recent improvements in the mechanism of acupuncture for obesity as well as discuss the future research prospects and potential of acupuncture for obesity.

Effectiveness and safety of acupuncture modalities for overweight and obesity treatment: a systematic review and network meta-analysis of RCTs

Abstract:Introduction: The effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of obesity have not been assessed. This poses a challenge for clinicians who choose to use acupuncture in the treatment of obesity, as they are unable to prioritize this approach based on outcome variables. Methods: In May 2024, a literature search of five databases was conducted. Only randomized controlled trials evaluating body weight (BW), body mass index, waist circumference (WC), and adverse events in patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher for various acupuncture modalities were included. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials, version 2. Pairwise meta-analysis (PMA) and Bayesian network meta-analysis (NMA) were performed using a random effects model for quantitative synthesis. Results: Fourteen studies (n = 868) were included. The included studies evaluated the following acupuncture modalities: electroacupuncture (EA) (N = 6), laser acupuncture (LA) (N = 2), auricular acupuncture (AA) (N = 5), and manual acupuncture (MA) (N = 3). The PMA found that adding EA to usual care (UC), compared to UC alone, reduced BW (MD = 2.46, 95% CI = 1.12 to 3.80, I 2 = 58%, REM, N = 3, n = 157). The NMA of BW showed the following effect sizes for UC alone versus each acupuncture modality combined with UC: LA (MD = 2.09, 95% CI = 0.04 to 3.86), EA (MD = 2.04, 95% CI = 0.88 to 3.50), AA (MD = 1.69, 95% CI = -0.11 to 3.58), and MA (MD = 1.02, 95% CI = -0.82 to 2.94). The probability of each modality being the optimal treatment was evaluated using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve. EA was the most efficacious for BW and BMI, while LA was the most efficacious for WC. Discussion: EA and LA can effectively complement clinical obesity management. The number of included studies was limited, and publication bias may have occurred, necessitating a cautious interpretation of the results. Furthermore, most studies lasted between six and 12 weeks. Future clinical studies of acupuncture for obesity should include longer follow-up periods. Abstract:Objective: To review the current situation of researches on auricular acupuncture treatment for obesity by using bibliometric analysis, so as to provide a reference for clinical application and experimental research in the future. Methods: Articles written in both Chinese and English and published from the time of establishment of the following databases were collected from databases of CNKI, Wanfang, PubMed and Web of Science by using key words of "otopoint sticking" "otopoint seed-pres-sing" "auriculotherapy" "ear/auricular acupuncture" "auricular pressure" "auricular-plaster therapy" "acupuncture and auricular pressure" "auriculopressure" "transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS)" "obesity" "adiposity" "adiposis" and "fatty". The articles met our inclusive criteria were analyzed for summarizing their publication years, involved journals, research organizations and selected acupoints. Results: A total of 61 qualified Chinese and 44 English articles were retrieved and published in 45 and 25 journals, respectively. The commonly-used acupoints are "Endocrine" "Stomach" "Spleen" "Shenmen" "Hunger point" "Sanjiao" "Lung" and "Subcortex". The employed auricular acupoint therapy mainly includes auricular acupressure, ear acupuncture, auricular vagus nerve stimulation, and auricular laser radiation. Conclusion: Current clinical literature on auricular acupuncture treatment of obesity is relatively lower in quality. Thus, strict research protocols and randomized controlled clinical trials with multiple centers and larger samples are definitely necessary for providing reliable evidence for clinical treatment of obesity by using auricular acupuncture therapy.

Methods: Potentially eligible studies that assessed anthropometric outcomes as well as glucose and lipid metabolism following acupuncture combined with lifestyle interventions in simple obesity patients were searched from eight databases from inception to October 2023. All analyses were performed using the Review Manager software v5.4 and Stata software v17.0. Results: Herein, 25 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 2018 patients were included. Generally, acupuncture combined with lifestyle interventions outperformed lifestyle interventions alone in terms of body weight (MD = − 4.73, 95% CI [− 6.32, − 3.13], p < 0.00001), body mass index (BMI) (MD = − 2.11, 95% CI [− 2.75, − 1.48], p < 0.00001), waist circumference (WC) (MD = − 4.96, 95% CI [− 6.89, − 3.03], p < 0.00001), body fat percentage (BF %) (MD = − 2.61, 95% CI [− 4,51, − 0.71], p = 0.007), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (SMD = − 0.66, 95% CI [− 1.02, − 0.31], p = 0.0002), fasting serum insulin (FINS) (SMD = − 1.12, 95% CI [− 1.44, − 0.81], p < 0.00001), homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) (MD = − 1.22, 95% CI [− 1.50, − 0.94], p < 0.00001), total cholesterol (TC) (SMD = − 1.14, 95% CI [− 1.83, − 0.45], p = 0.001), triglyceride (TG) (SMD = − 1.31, 95% CI [− 2.07, − 0.56], p = 0.0006), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (SMD = − 1.81, 95% CI [− 3.11, − 0.51], p = 0.006). Subgroup analysis based on three subgroup variables (types of acupuncture and lifestyle interventions as well as treatment durations) could partially explain the heterogeneity of the results. Conclusion: Acupuncture demonstrated an enhancing effect on the benefits of lifestyle interventions for weight loss in patients with simple obesity, including reducing body weight and improving glucose and lipid metabolism. This finding suggests its potential value as a complementary therapy alongside lifestyle interventions in a clinical setting. However, further validation with rigorously designed and high-quality RCTs is still needed in the future. Electroacupuncture for abdominal obesity: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

Abstract:Introduction The prevalence of obesity is rising, significantly impacting health and quality of life. Effective treatment is crucial, particularly for abdominal obesity (AO). Electroacupuncture (EA), which combines acupuncture and moxibustion with electric current, shows promise but lacks reliable clinical evidence for its efficacy and safety. Therefore, a meta-analysis is essential to assess the clinical effectiveness of EA in treating AO. Methods and analysis A systematic search of PubMed, Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang and Allied and Alternative Medicine (AMED) databases will be conducted from database inception to 1 June 2024 to identify randomised controlled trials investigating the effectiveness and safety of EA in treating AO. Two authors will independently carry out data extraction and evaluate the risk of bias. RevMan software (V.5.4) will be used for data analysis, and publication bias will be assessed using funnel plots and Egger's test. The quality of evidence will be evaluated according to Grades of Recommendation, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation, and trial sequence analysis will be used to calculate the final total sample size required for the meta-analysis. The primary outcome will be the measurement of waist circumference. Secondary outcomes will include the quality of life, hip circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, body mass index, body fat percentage, visceral fat thickness and serum markers such as triglycerides, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. The data will be pooled and analysed, with subgroup analyses conducted if needed. Ethics and dissemination This systematic review and meta-analysis does not require ethical approval because the data for this review will be extracted from already published journal articles. The protocol for this review has been registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO). This review and its findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal or presented at scientific conferences. PROSPERO registration number CRD42024562984.

Abstract:Background: This study explored the influences of electroacupuncture combined with dietary intervention on the intestinal flora in perimenopausal patients with abdominal obesity by using the 16s rRNA sequencing technology.Methods: Perimenopausal patients with abdominal obesity were divided into the Electroacupuncture group and the Control group. Patients in the Control group received healthy lifestyle education, while those in the Electroacupuncture group received electroacupuncture combined with dietary intervention. Before and after treatment, the weight, height, waist circumference, hip circumference, waist-height ratio (WHtR), waist to hip ratio (WHR), and body mass index (BMI) of the patients were recorded; the levels of serum triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), fasting insulin (FINS), and fasting blood glucose (FGB) were evaluated; and the abundance, diversity, and species differences of intestinal flora were analyzed using 16s rRNA sequencing technology.Results: The body weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, BMI, WHR, and WHtR of patients in the Electroacupuncture group after treatment were lower than those before treatment. Compared with the Control group, patients in the Electroacupuncture group after treatment displayed lower waist circumference, WHtR, WHR, TG, and LDL levels as well as species abundance, higher species diversity, and lager species difference in the intestinal flora. Besides, the proportions of Klebsiella and Kosakonia in the intestinal flora of patients in the Electroacupuncture group after treatment were larger than those before treatment.Conclusion: Electroacupuncture combined with diet treatment generated a therapeutic effect on abdominal obesity in perimenopausal patients by improving the community structure of intestinal flora.

Abstract:Background: Central obesity is considered as a significant health threat to individuals. Scientific research has demonstrated that intra-abdominal fat accumulation is associated with higher metabolic and cardiovascular disease risks independent of Body Mass Index (BMI). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of electro-acupuncture in treating central obesity compared with sham acupuncture. Method: This was a patient-assessor blinded, randomized, sham-controlled clinical trial. One hundred sixty eight participants aged between 18 and 65 years old with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 and waist circumference (WC) of men ≥ 90 cm / women ≥ 80 cm were enrolled and allocated to the acupuncture or sham acupuncture group equally. For the acupuncture group, disposable acupuncture needles were inserted into eight body acupoints, including Tianshu (ST-25), Daheng (SP-15), Daimai (GB-26), Qihai (CV-6), Zhongwan (CV-12), Zusanli (ST-36), Fenglong (ST-40), and Sanyinjiao (SP-6) with electrical stimulation. For the control group, Streitberger's non-invasive acupuncture needles were utilized at the same acupoints with identical stimulation modalities. The treatment duration was 8 weeks with 2 sessions per week and the follow-up period was 8 weeks. The primary outcome was the change in WC before and after the treatment. The secondary outcomes were the changes in hip circumference, waist-to-hip circumference ratio, BMI, and body fat percentage during the treatment and follow-up period. Results: The acupuncture group displayed a significant change in WC compared to the sham group both treatment and follow-up period (MD = -1.1 cm, 95% CI = -2.8 to 4.1). Significant change in body fat percentage was recorded for both groups after treatment but no significance was observed during the follow-up period (MD = -0.1%, 95% CI = -1.9 to 2.2). The changes in hip circumference were also significant both treatment and follow-up period for the acupuncture group (MD = -2.0 cm, 95% CI = -3.7 to -1.7). Compared with sham acupuncture, the body weight (MD = -1 kg, 95% CI = -3.3 to 5.3), BMI (MD = -0.5, 95% CI = -0.7 to 1.9) also decreased significantly within and between groups. The incidence of adverse events was similar in the two groups. Conclusion: This study provided evidence that electro-acupuncture could be effective in treating central obesity by reducing WC, hip circumference, body weight, BMI, and waist-to-hip circumference ratio. Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the efficacy of acupuncture therapy in decreasing visceral fat thickness(VFT) in patients with simple central obesity. METHODS:Sixty patients with simple central obesity (syndrome of stomach and intestinal excessive heat) were randomly divided into control and acupuncture groups. Patients of the control group were treated with diet control and physical exercise procedure (basic treatment) for 6 months, and those of the acupuncture group treated with basic treatment combined with acupuncture stimulation of main acupoints Shuifen (CV 9), Yinjiao (CV 7), and bilateral Tianshu (ST 25), Huaroumen (ST 24) and bilateral Wailing (ST 26), etc., in combination with electroacupuncture (EA, 50- 100 Hz, 1- 5 mA) of bilateral ST 25, CV 9 and CV 7 for 30 min, once every other day for 3 months. The VFT (1 cm above the umbilicus) was detected by using an ultrasonic diagnosis instrument, and the body mass index (BMI, body weight/height(2)), and waist circumfe-rence (WC) were measured before treatment, 3 and 6 months after the treatment, respectively. RESULTS:Following 3 and 6 months' treatment, the VFT, BMI and WC of both groups were significantly decreased (P<0.01), and the effects of the acupuncture group were significantly superior to those of the control group in lowering VFT [(51.5 ± 6.5) mm vs (48.3 ± 4.7) mm)] and WC [(88.2 ± 3.6)cm vs (85.9 ± 4.3)cm] 6 months' after the treatment (P<0.05). There was no significant difference between the control and acupuncture groups in BMI fowllowing 6 months' treatment [(31.0 ± 4.3) vs (30.1 ± 3.2), P>0.05]. CONCLUSION:Acupuncture intervention combined with diet control and physical exercise can effectively decrease VFT and WC in simple central obesity patients. VFT is a sensitive and better parameter for evaluating the effect of obesity treatment.

Abstract:Objective To investigate the clinical effects of different acupuncture treatments based on syndrome differentiation in reducing body fat and weight in simple obesity patients. Methods Two hundred patients with simple obesity were randomly allocated to five groups, that is, filiform needle acupuncture, acupuncture plus auricular-plaster therapy, acupuncture plus cupping, acupuncture plus iontophoresis, and electroacupuncture, 40 cases each. Acupuncture treatment was given once every other day, 15 times as a course. The clinical effects of different acupuncture treatments were compared at the end of the course. Results There was no marked effectiveness in 3, 2, 2, 1 and 2 patients, respectively, in the five groups. The total efficacy rate was 95%. Conclusion Acupuncture based on syndrome differentiation is an effective way to treat simple obesity.

Abstract:In order to investigate the regulatory effect of acupuncture on obesity patients with the Stomach-Intestine Excessive Heat Type, the pre-acupunctureal and post-acupunctural obesity index and biochemical indices of 718 simple obesity patients with Stomach-Intestine Excessive Heat Type were observed. It was showed that the marked weight loss effect was achieved in the cases by acupuncture, and the biochemical indices improved. It suggests that acupuncture had a optimal regulatory effect on the function of nerve, endocrine, digestion and energy metabolism.

Abstract:Obesity is a serious medical problem worldwide. As a holistic therapy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) may have a potential in obesity management. In this controlled trial, we evaluated the safety and effectiveness of Xin-Ju-Xiao-Gao-Fang (XJXGF), a TCM herbal formulation, in 140 obese subjects over a 24-week period. The XJXGF formula mainly consists of rhubarb, coptis, semen cassia, and citrus aurantium. Subjects with body mass index (BMI) 28–40 kg/m2 were recruited at 5 centers in China. We assessed the changes in subjects' body weight, its related parameters, and the reduction of insulin resistance (IR) after administration of XJXGF formula or low-dose XJXGF (10% of the XJXGF formula, as control). After 24-week treatment, among participants in the XJXGF formula group and low-dose XJXGF group, the mean ± SE changes in the body weight were -3.58 ± 0.48 and -1.91 ± 0.38 kg, respectively (p < 0.01). The changes in the IR-index of two groups were -2.65 ± 1.04 and -1.58 ± 1.3, respectively (p < 0 .05). There were no serious adverse events reported during the 24-week trial. Participants reported 7 minor adverse events, 4 in the XJXGF formula group and 3 in the low-dose XJXGF group (p = 0.578). Future studies are needed to investigate the clinical utility of this TCM formulation in the treatment of obese subjects.
