Abstract:In this work, we show using density functional theory calculations that controlling the spin state of the surface of magnetic metals has a substantial effect on their chemical properties. For a range of adsorbates, the adsorption energy is shown to be stronger on non-spin polarized surfaces than on spin polarized ground state surfaces. This is true for Fe, Co, and Ni surfaces, and the result is the same for three commonly used exchange–correlation functionals. We further discuss the origin of the effect in terms of the surface electronic structure and show that a simple model based on the d-band model of adsorption can explain the effect. Finally, we discuss how spin effects may be used to control surface reactivity and provide guidance on how to alter the surface spin state, e.g., adding a metal promotor.

Abstract:Abstract Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy is a crucial tool to determine the chemical structure of materials. ESR spectra measured in molecular systems, however, are established on large ensembles of spins and usually require complicated structural analysis. Recently, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) combined with ESR has been proven as a powerful tool to image and coherently control individual atomic spins on surfaces. Here, we extend this technique to demonstrate ESR on single organic molecules - iron phthalocyanine (FePc) - and investigate the magnetic interactions between a molecular spin and either another molecular or atomic spin. We show that the molecular spin density is not only localized at the central Fe atom, but also distributed to the outer ligands, yielding a strongly anisotropic exchange coupling. Our work opens the door for using molecules in nanoscale ESR studies and promises tuning magnetic interactions between non-localized spins via tailoring ligand field symmetry and strength.

Abstract:Many-body interactions in metal-organic frameworks are fundamental for emergent quantum physics. Unlike their solution counterpart, magnetization at surfaces in low-dimensional analogues is strongly influenced by magnetic anisotropy induced by the substrate and still not well understood. Here, we use on-surface coordination chemistry to synthesize on Ag(111) and superconducting Pb(111) an iron-based spin chain by using pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone precursors as ligands. Using low-temperature scanning probe microscopy, we compare their structures and low-energy spin excitations of coordinated Fe atoms with high S = 2 spin-state. Although the chain and coordination centers are identical on both substrates, the long-range spin-spin coupling due to a superexchange through the ligand observed on Ag is absent on Pb(111). We ascribe this reduction of spin-spin interactions on Pb to the depletion of electronic states around the Fermi level in the Pb(111) superconductor as compared to silver.

Emergent Ferromagnetism at LaFeO3/SrTiO3 Interface Arising from Strain-induced Spin-State Transition

Abstract:Creating new interfacial magnetic states with desired functionalities is attractive for fundamental studies and spintronics applications. The emergence of interfacial magnetic phases demands the fabrication of pristine interfaces and the characterization and understanding of atomic structure as well as electronic, magnetic, and orbital degrees of freedom at the interface. Here, we report a novel interfacial insulating ferromagnetic order in antiferromagnetic LaFeO3 grown on SrTiO3, characterized by a combination of electron microscopy and spectroscopy, magnetometry, and density functional theory. The epitaxial strain drives a spin-state disproportionation in the interfacial layer of LaFeO3, which leads to a checkerboard arrangement of low- and high-spin Fe3+ ions inside smaller and larger FeO6 octahedra, respectively. Ferromagnetism at the interface arises from superexchange interactions between the low- and high-spin Fe3+. The detailed understanding of creation of emergent magnetism illustrates the potential of designing and controlling orbital degrees of freedom at the interface to realize novel phases and functionalities for future spin-electronic applications.

Abstract:Low dimensional magnetic systems including surfaces, interfaces and thin-films, have attracted a great amount of attention in the past decade because, as expected, the lowered symmetry and coordination number offer a variety of opportunities for inducing new and exotic phenomena and so hold out the promise of new device applications. Local spin density functional (LSDF) ab initio electronic structure calculations played a key role in the development of this exciting field by not only providing a clearer understanding of the experimental observations but also predicting new systems with desired properties. Extensive calculated results reviewed here demonstrate that (1) weakened interatomic hybridization at clean surfaces or interfaces with inert substrates give rise to strong magnetic enhancement and (2) the strong interaction with nonmagnetic transition metals diminishes (entirely in some cases) the ferromagnetism and usually stabilizes the antiferromagnetic configuration. Surprisingly, experimentally observed surface (interface) magnetic anisotropy can be reproduced correctly in the theoretical calculations, although the anisotropy energy is only ∼10−4−10−5 eV.

Abstract:The ability to design and control the spin and charge order of low dimensional materials on the molecular scale offers an intriguing pathway towards the miniaturization of spintronic technology towards the nanometer scale. In this work, we focus on the adsorption induced modifications of the magnetic and electronic properties of a low dimensional ferromagnetic surface alloy after the adsorption of the prototypical organic molecule perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (PTCDA). For this metal-organic interface, we observe the formation of a localized $\sigma$-like bond between the functional molecular groups and the surface alloy atoms. This strong chemical bonding coincides with a lifting of the characteristic surface alloy band structure and a reduction of the magnitude of the local magnetic moments of the Dy atoms by 18%. We attribute both findings to a mixing of spin-degenerate molecular states with spin-split states of the Dy-Ag surface alloy via the sigma-like bonds between PTCDA and the Dy surface alloy atoms. Our findings clearly demonstrate the potential of tailored molecule-surface sigma-bonds to control not only the electronic but also the magnetic order of low dimensional materials.
From Slater to Mott physics: epitaxial engineering of electronic correlations in oxide interfaces

Abstract:Using spin-assisted ab-initio random structure searches, we explore an exhaustive quantum phase diagram of archetypal interfaced Mott insulators, i.e. lanthanum-iron and lanthanum-titanium oxides. In particular, we report that the charge transfer induced by the interfacial electronic reconstruction stabilises a high spin ferrous Fe2+ state. We provide a pathway to control the strength of correlation in this electronic state by tuning the epitaxial strain, yielding a manifold of quantum electronic phases, i.e. Mott-Hubbard, charge transfer and Slater insulating states. Furthermore we report that the electronic correlations are closely related to the structural oxygen octahedral rotations, whose control is able to stabilise the low spin state of Fe2+ at low pressure previously observed only under the extreme high pressure conditions in the Earth's lower mantle. Thus we provide avenues for magnetic switching via THz radiations which have crucial implications for next generation of spintronics technologies.

Mechanism of spin ordering in Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ nanoparticles by surface coating with organic acids

Abstract:Saturation magnetization values close to the bulk have been reported for coated magnetite nanoparticles with organic acids. The mechanism of this effect is not yet understood. Here we show that a previously proposed rationalization in Nano Letters 12 (2021) 2499-2503 was based on electronic structure properties that are not consistent with several existing density functional theory studies. Our study is based on a wide set of Hubbard-corrected density functional tight binding (DTFB+U) and hybrid density functional theory (HSE06) calculations on Fe$_{3}$O$_{4}$ nanocubes of more than 400 atoms. We provide a new explanation for the spin ordering in coated nanoparticles, through the investigation of spin-flipping phenomena. In particular, we show that the spin-flip of d electrons at octahedral Fe$^{3+}$ sites, which is confirmed to be more favorable near the surface, especially where atomic reorganization can take place such as at corner sites, can be hampered by the presence of adsorbed organic acids because they do not only limit the surface reconstruction but also allow for additional ferromagnetic superexchange interaction between octahedral Fe sites as a consequence of the carboxylates bridging binding mode. The proof-of-concept of this mechanism is given by a simplified model of the Fe(III) tert-butoxide dimer.
Atomic insight into spin, charge and lattice modulations at SrFeO3-x/SrTiO3 interfaces

Abstract:Novel phenomena and functionalities at interfaces of oxide heterostructures are currently of great interest in a wide range of applications. At such interfaces, charge, spin, orbital and lattice ordering coexist and correlate closely, contributing to rich functional responses. By using atomically resolved imaging and spectroscopy techniques, we investigated magnetic behaviors and structural modulation at the SrFeO3-x/SrTiO3 interface. Fe/Ti element intermixing and oxygen vacancies occurred across a few unit cells at the interface. Furthermore, antiferromagnetic spin ordering of Fe with different valence states in the interface of SrFeO3-x/SrTiO3 induced uncompensated magnetic moments. Compared to the SrFeO3-x/La0.3Sr0.7Al0.65Ta0.35O3 heterojunction, the variations of charge and lattice order parameters at the SrFeO3-x/SrTiO3 interfaces were also determined by advanced electron microscopy, which provided a good understanding of the physical origin of disparate macroscopic magnetic properties, further investigated by magnetometer measurements and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra. These studies provide comprehensive insight into the interfacial modulation of ferrite oxide, which may be useful for designing future devices in oxide electronics.

Abstract:First-principles electronic structure studies based on local spin density functional theory and performed on extremely complex simulations of ever increasingly realistic systems, play a very important role in explaining and predicting surface and interface magnetism. This has led to solving even more challenging problems like the embrittlement of the Fe grain boundary, discussed here. Now, a major issue for first-principles theory is the treatment of the weak spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in magnetic transition metals and their alloys and its subsequent effects: (i) A major breakthrough in eliminating the numerical randomness for the determination of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy was made with the state-tracking and torque approaches. This now enables us to treat magnetostriction and its inverse effect, strain-induced magnetic anisotropy in transition metal bulk, thin films and alloys, (ii) The magneto-optical Kerr effects and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism are now directly calculated and compared with experiment. In all this work, and more recently, on the first-principles calculations of giant magneto-resistance in multilayers, extensive first-principles calculations and model analyses provide simple physical insights and guidelines to search for new magnetic recording and sensor materials.

Abstract:A proper theoretical description of electronic structure of the 3d orbitals in the metal centers of functional metalorganics is a challenging problem. In this letter, we apply density functional theory and an exact diagonalization method in a many body approach to study the ground state electronic configuration of an iron porphyrin (FeP) molecule. Our study reveals that dynamical correlation effects are important, and FeP is a potential candidate for realizing a spin crossover due to a subtle balance of crystal field effects, on-site Coulomb repulsion and hybridization between the Fe d-orbitals and ligand N p-states. The mechanism of switching between two close lying electronic configurations of Fe-d orbitals is shown. We discuss the generality of the suggested approach and the possibility to properly describe the electronic structure and related low energy physics of the whole class of correlated metal centered organometallic molecules.

Abstract:Discoveries of ferromagnetic materials with ultrathin thickness are of great importance for both fundamental science and technological applications. Transition metal oxides (TMOs) provide promising candidates in the context of next-generation spintronics, despite the severe decay of ferromagnetism as the thickness reduces to the nanometer regime. Here, an efficient strategy to eliminate the magnetic dead layer in atomically thin oxides is presented, by using the epitaxial interface of 3d and 5d oxide monolayers that reconciles both strong exchange interaction and large uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Combining multiple experimental methods, a ferromagnetic transition in an ultrathin oxide heterostructure comprised of only one La0.2Sr0.8MnO3 monolayer sandwiched by SrIrO3 monolayer (total thickness of three unit-cells) is unambiguously demonstrated. Remarkably, a largely enhanced saturation magnetization (2 mu B Mn-1) and Curie temperature (80 K) are observed for the single manganite monolayer, as compared to previously reported ferromagnetic monolayer oxides. The results demonstrate a general strategy for creating robust ferromagnetism in ultrathin TMOs, potentially enabling novel oxide spin-orbitronic devices. Spin-lattice couplings in $3d$ ferromagnets: analysis from first-principles

Abstract:Magnetoelasticity plays a crucial role in numerous magnetic phenomena, including magnetocalorics, magnon excitation via acoustic waves, and ultrafast demagnetization/Einstein-de Haas effect. Despite a long-standing discussion on anisotropy-mediated magnetoelastic interactions of relativistic origin, including \textit{ab-initio} calculations, the exchange-mediated magnetoelastic parameters within an atomistic framework have only recently begun to be investigated. As a result, many of their behaviors and values for real materials remain poorly understood. Therefore, by using a proposed simple modification of the embedded cluster approach that reduces the computational complexity, we critically analyze the properties of exchange-mediated spin-lattice coupling parameters for elemental $3d$ ferromagnets (bcc Fe, fcc Ni, and fcc Co), comparing methods used for their extraction and relating their realistic values to symmetry considerations and orbitally-decomposed contributions. Additionally, we investigate the effects of noncollinearity (spin temperature) and applied pressure on these parameters. For Fe, we find that single-site rotations, associated with spin temperatures around $\sim100$ K, induce significant modifications, particularly in Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya-type couplings; in contrast, such interactions in Co and Ni remain almost configuration independent. Moreover, we demonstrate a notable change in the exchange-mediated magnetoelastic constants for Fe under isostatic compression. Finally, the conversion between atomistic, quantum-mechanically derived parameters and the phenomenological magnetoelastic theory is discussed, which can be an useful tool towards larger and more realistic dynamics simulations involving coupled subsystems.

Abstract:Interfaces between materials provide an intellectually rich arena for fundamental scientific discovery and device design. However, the frustration of magnetization and conductivity of perovskite oxide films under reduced dimensionality is detrimental to their device performance, preventing their active low-dimensional application. Herein, by inserting the ultrathin 4d ferromagnetic SrRuO3 layer between ferroelectric BaTiO3 layers to form a sandwich heterostructure, we observe enhanced physical properties in ultrathin SrRuO3 films, including longitudinal conductivity, Curie temperature, and saturated magnetic moment. Especially, the saturated magnetization can be enhanced to ∼3.12 μB/Ru in ultrathin BaTiO3/SrRuO3/BaTiO3 trilayers, which is beyond the theoretical limit of bulk value (2 μB/Ru). This observation is attributed to the synergistic ferroelectric proximity effect (SFPE) at upper and lower BaTiO3/SrRuO3 heterointerfaces, as revealed by the high-resolution lattice structure analysis. This SFPE in dual-ferroelectric interface cooperatively induces ferroelectric-like lattice distortions in RuO6 oxygen octahedra and subsequent spin-state crossover in SrRuO3, which in turn accounts for the observed enhanced magnetization. Besides the fundamental significance of interface-induced spin-lattice coupling, our findings also provide a viable route to the electrical control of magnetic ordering, taking a step toward low-power applications in all-oxide spintronics.
Ab initio study of magnetic structure and chemical reactivity of Cr2O3 and its (0001) surface

Abstract:We present the first ab initio density functional theory study of the oxygen-terminated Cr2O3 (0001) surface within the local spin-density approximation (LSDA). We find that spin plays a critical role for even the most basic properties of Cr2O3 such as the structure and mechanical response of the bulk material. The surface exhibits strong relaxations and changes in electronic and magnetic structure with important implications for the chemical reactivity and unusual spin-dependent catalytic activity of the surface. Unlike the bulk, the outermost chromium bilayer is ferromagnetically ordered, and the surface oxygen layer exhibits appreciable net spin polarization in the opposite sense. Surprisingly, despite this ferrimagnetic order, the chemically important states near the Fermi level exhibit ferromagnetic order and thus favor electronic spin alignment of species interacting with the surface. Finally, we also find a high density of unoccupied electronic surface states available to participate in the chemical reactivity of the surface.

Abstract:We present a combined experimental and theoretical study on electronic and magnetic properties of the $\text{Fe}(001)\text{\ensuremath{-}}p(1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1)\text{O}$ surface. The ordered $p(1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1)$ surface is investigated with spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy accompanied by first-principles calculations. The atomic registry of the $\text{Fe}(001)\text{\ensuremath{-}}p(1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}1)\text{O}$ surface was confirmed in real space from the atomically resolved images. Tunneling spectroscopy reveals two oxygen induced features in the local density of states, around $\ensuremath{-}0.7\text{ }\text{eV}$ and at the Fermi level, the origin of which is discussed based on first-principles calculations. Due to the hybridization of oxygen ${p}_{z}$ states with the Fe states near the Fermi level, the spin polarization in tunneling experiments is inverted upon oxygen adsorption.

Abstract:Strongly-correlated transition-metal oxides are widely known for their various exotic phenomena. This is exemplified by rare-earth nickelates such as LaNiO$_{3}$, which possess intimate interconnections between their electronic, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom. Their properties can be further enhanced by pairing them in hybrid heterostructures, which can lead to hidden phases and emergent phenomena. An important example is the LaNiO$_{3}$/LaTiO$_{3}$ superlattice, where an interlayer electron transfer has been observed from LaTiO$_{3}$ into LaNiO$_{3}$ and is predicted to result in a high-spin state. However, macroscopic emergence of magnetic order has so far not been observed. Here, by using muon spin rotation, x-ray absorption, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we present direct evidence of an emergent antiferromagnetic order with high magnon energy and exchange interactions at the LaNiO$_{3}$/LaTiO$_{3}$ interface. As the magnetism is purely interfacial, a single LaNiO$_{3}$/LaTiO$_{3}$ interface can essentially behave as an atomically thin quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet, potentially allowing its technological utilisation in advanced spintronic devices. Furthermore, its strong quasi-two-dimensional magnetic correlations and orbitally-polarized planar ligand holes make its electronic and magnetic configurations resemble the precursor states of superconducting cuprates and nickelates, but with an S $\rightarrow$ 1 spin state instead.

Abstract:We employ spin-polarized (SP) STM to study the spin-dependent tunneling between a magnetite (111) sample and an antiferromagnetic tip through a vacuum barrier at room temperature. Atomic scale STM images show significant magnetic contrast corresponding to variations in the local surface states induced by oxygen vacancies. The estimated variations in tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) of 250% suggest that the spin-transport properties are significantly altered locally by the presence of surface defects.

Abstract:Controlling spin wave excitations in magnetic materials underpins the burgeoning field of magnonics. Yet, little is known about how magnons interact with the conduction electrons of itinerant magnets, or how this interplay can be controlled. Via a surface-sensitive spectroscopic approach, we demonstrate a strong and highly-tuneable electron-magnon coupling at the Pd-terminated surface of the delafossite oxide PdCoO$_2$, where a polar surface charge mediates a Stoner transition to itinerant surface ferromagnetism. We show how the coupling can be enhanced 7-fold with increasing surface disorder, and concomitant charge carrier doping, becoming sufficiently strong to drive the system into a polaronic regime, accompanied by a significant quasiparticle mass enhancement. Our study thus sheds new light on electron-magnon interactions in solid-state materials, and the ways in which these can be controlled.
