Abstract:<p>In a practical project of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane for polymer flooding wastewater treatment, the deterioration of membrane performance was observed after 4 years of operation. The aging effects of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) on PVDF ultrafiltration membranes were systematically studied, including the membrane properties, filtration performance, and fouling behaviors. During the NaClO aging process, chemical transformations of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) additives dominated the changes in membrane intrinsic characteristics, and the kinetic behavior of PVP decomposition was proposed, which was closely related to the evolution of the membrane pore size. For aged membranes, due to the changes in intrinsic characteristics, the antifouling performance significantly declined: the pseudo-stable flux with feeding solution and flux recovery after physical cleaning decreased by ∼55% and ∼62%, respectively, after 20 days of aging. The intermolecular forces in combination with the interfacial free energies were used to evaluate the fouling behaviors of aged membranes. The increased energies indicated the more spontaneous foulant‒membrane adhesion and stabilized fouling layers, which deteriorated the irreversible fouling resistance, increased the initial fouling rates and reduced the flux recovery after physical cleaning. Compared to intermolecular forces, foulant‒membrane interfacial free energies can serve as the more sensitive and reliable indicators of membrane fouling.</p>

Abstract:This study compared the effects of chemical aging on the polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes fabricated with the methods of non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) (named NIPS-PVDF) and thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) (named TIPS-PVDF). The chemical solutions of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) were chosen at the concentration of 5000mg/L. The equivalence of 5 and 10years was respectively selected as the time of aging. The physicochemical evolutions of membrane aging are characterized on the base of morphology analysis, chemical components, permeation ability and mechanical properties. The aging of NIPS-PVDF membrane led to the elimination of surface hydrophilic additives, while NaOH focused on the dehydrofluorination process resulting in the formation of conjugated chains of polyene on the skeleton structure. The chemical components of the surface of TIPS-PVDF membrane were removed continuously during the aging processes of both NaClO and NaOH, which was caused by the saponification of surface additives and the chain scissions of skeleton structure, but without producing any obvious conjugated chains of polyene. All the aging processes led to the increase of contact angle and the decrease of mechanical properties, and the permeability was reduced first and increased later due to the enlargement of surface membrane pores and membrane block. With the influence of membrane aging, selectivity of membrane was decreased (except coliform bacteria). At the beginning of filtration, the turbidity and particle count were at relatively high levels and declined with the filtration process.
Sodium hypochlorite assisted membrane cleaning: Alterations in the characteristics of organic foulants and membrane permeability

Abstract:Chemical cleaning is an important approach for alleviating severe fouling in membrane separation processes. In this study, lysozyme (LYS) was exposed to sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) with varied concentrations (0–2000 ppm) to understand the changes in the physicochemical properties and functional groups as well as the variations in membrane permeabilities. The results showed that membrane filterability exhibited an obvious ‘U-shaped’ trend, and the valley existed when the ratio of Cl/C (the ratio of NaClO and TOC concentrations in feed water) is among 1.35–3.09. Upon exposure to low dose NaClO, three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) spectra showed that tryptophan protein substances were transformed to more hydrophobic humic-like substances. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis further confirmed that exposure to low dose NaClO promoted the breakage of aromatic substituents, leading to the formation of hydrophobic condensed aromatic substances. On the contrary, at high NaClO loads, protein structures were destroyed completely and almost no obvious fluorescent intensities could be detected, which promoted the recovery of membrane filterabilities. Notably, the chemical cleaning mechanisms of fouled membranes with NaClO were understood in depth in this study. These results provide new information about the oxidation products of LYS and the cleaning efficiency upon exposure to NaClO.

Abstract:Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is a commonly applied cleaning agent for ultrafiltration membranes in water and wastewater treatment. Long-term exposure to NaClO might change the properties and performance of polymeric membranes, and ultimately shorten membrane lifespan. Active species in NaClO solution vary with solution pH, and the aging effects can change depending on the membrane material. In this study, the aging of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyethersulfone (PES) membranes by NaClO at pH 3-11 was investigated by examining variations in chemical composition, surface charge, surface morphology, mechanical strength, permeability, and retention ability. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), which was blended in both membranes, was oxidized and dislodged due to NaClO aging at all investigated pH values, but the oxidation products and dislodgement ratio of PVP varied with solution pH. For the PVDF membrane, NaClO aging at pH 3-11 caused a moderate increase in permeability and decreased retention due to the oxidation and release of PVP. The tensile strength decreased only at pH 11 because of the defluorination of PVDF molecules. For the PES membrane, NaClO aging at all investigated pH resulted in chain scission of PES molecules, which was favored at pH 7 and 9, potentially due to the formation of free radicals. Therefore, a decrease in tensile strength and retention ability, as well as an increase in permeability, occurred in the PES membrane for NaClO aging at pH 3-11. Overall, the results can provide a basis for selecting chemical cleaning conditions for PVDF and PES membranes.

Abstract:We present an innovative solution for improving the chlorine resistance of polyamide RO membranes. Our method involves the design of temperature-specific (70 ℃) responsive nanocontainers (T-RNC) through layer-by-layer self-assembly on a monodisperse SiO2 nanoparticle core. These nanocontainers, measuring 25 nm in size, are embedded within a thin film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane, resulting in a homogeneous surface structure with increased roughness and strong hydrophilicity. The precise temperature-responsive properties of T-RNC enable the dissolution of the encapsulated shell material, releasing SS molecules containing amino and carboxyl groups. These molecules effectively bind to broken amid bonds within the PA layer, repairing structural damage caused by chlorination and significantly enhancing the membrane’s chlorine resistance. Extensive testing revealed that the temperature-responsive TFN membrane maintained over 90 % NaCl rejection, even after exposure to 18,000 ppm.h of chlorination. In contrast, the control group lacking temperature-responsive TFN and TFC membranes exhibited reduced rejection rates of 62.15 % and 71.24 %, respectively. Additionally, the TFN membranes exhibited excellent water permeability and resistance to contamination. Our findings offer promising avenues for researchers to explore the development of intelligent and chlorine-resistant polyamide RO membranes, with a particular focus on chlorination-remediation techniques.
Adverse Events in the Removal of Naltrexone Implants

Abstract:Naltrexone implants are used as an abstinence therapy for patients with opioid, amphetamine and alcohol abuse. This study was designed to assess the implications of this therapy in patients presenting for anaesthesia for removal of these implants. We conducted a retrospective case-note review of 37 patients undergoing removal of naltrexone implants in the period 2001 to 2008 at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Indications for removal included infection at the insertion site, naltrexone intolerance or the requirement for effective opioid analgesia. Thirty-two patients had surgery under general anaesthesia, four under local anaesthesia and one under spinal anaesthesia. The perioperative opioid requirement varied from 0 to 100 mg of intravenous morphine equivalents (median 11.7 mg, mean 20.7 mg). The only factor that was associated with a higher perioperative opioid requirement was whether the implant was infected or not. Forty-four percent of patients having a general anaesthetic complained of moderate to severe pain postoperatively, and 64% of these patients had a prolonged stay in the post-anaesthesia care unit. We did not observe any instances of postoperative complications due to increased opioid sensitivity after removal of naltrexone implants. The majority of patients were discharged home by the first postoperative day. Anaesthesia for the removal of naltrexone implants was associated with a wide range of opioid analgesia requirements and a high incidence of pain postoperatively. Concern regarding increasing opioid sensitivity after removal of implants does not seem to preclude use of generous opioid analgesia in this group of patients.
Effect of NaClO and NaOH at Low Agent Concentration on the Ageing of PVDF Ultrafiltration Membrane

Abstract:The polyvinylidene (PVDF) ultrafiltration membrane was aged using NaClO and NaOH. The selected concentrations of the agents were 0.026mol/L and 0.025mol/L, respectively. The effect of low-concentration cleaning agents on the aging of the PVDF membrane was investigated. The virgin membrane and membranes exposed to cleaning agents were characterized using pure water flux, membrane pore size distribution, total organic carbon (TOC) rejection efficiency, tensile strength, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), contact angle and attenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). The results indicated that the average pore size of the membrane exposed to cleaning agents increased than that of the virgin membrane. After exposed to NaClO and NaOH, the total organic carbon (TOC) rejection efficiencies decreased from 36.0% to 16.2%~32.4% and13.9%~24.4%, respectively. The dehydrofluorination occurred during the aging process, which was indicated by the increased peak intensity of CC and CO. The chemical composition and structure of the membrane were changed by the chemical cleaning agents and this caused the reduction of membrane hydrophilicity. The tensile strength and ultimate elongation reduced along with the increased aging time. The impact of NaOH on the mechanical property of membrane was more significant than that of NaClO.

Abstract:Microbial effects are believed to be a major contributor to membrane fouling in drinking water treatment. Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is commonly applied in membrane cleaning, but its potential use as a pretreatment for controlling operational fouling has received little attention. In this study, the effect of adding a continuous low dose of NaClO (1 mg/l as active Cl) in combination with alum, before ultrafiltration, was compared with only alum as pretreatment. The results showed that the addition of NaClO substantially reduced membrane fouling both in terms of the rate of TMP development and the properties of the membrane cake layer. Although the size of nano-scale primary coagulant flocs changed little by the addition of NaClO, the cake layer on the membrane had a greater porosity and a substantially reduced thickness. NaClO was found to inactivate bacteria in the influent flow, which reduced both microbial proliferation and the production of proteins and polysaccharides in the cake layer and contributed significantly to improving the overall ultrafiltration performance. NaClO dosing had no adverse impact on the formation of currently regulated disinfection by-product compounds (THMs and HAAs).

Abstract:NaClO has been extensively used for controlling membrane fouling in water and wastewater treatment processes, with bacteria being a common foulant in long-term ultrafiltration. However, the potential impact of NaClO cleaning on membrane structure and the formation of halogenated by-products remains unclear. This study comprehensively investigated the variation of membrane characteristics and formation of halogenated by-products during the chemical cleaning of Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) cell-fouled membrane using NaClO solution. The feed water containing E. coli cells resulted in severe membrane fouling by forming a dense cake layer, while NaClO cleaning achieved complete restoration of membrane flux under optimal conditions. The cleaning performance was compromised under high temperature and acidic conditions due to the lysis of E. coli cells and the limited oxidative capability of HClO. Excellent chemical resistance of polyethersulfone membrane against NaClO was confirmed under appropriate operational conditions. The biofouling and membrane materials played critical roles as precursors in the formation of halogenated chemicals during NaClO cleaning, and the generation pattern of by-products is highly dependent on the composition of membrane foulants. Increasing E. coli concentration, NaClO dosage, temperature and blending time led to the monotonical accumulation of almost all eleven representative by-products. As solution pH rose continuously, several by-products including trichloroacetic acid and chloral hydrate exhibited an initial increasing then decreasing trend, which could be attributed to the relative quantities between their formation and decomposition rates.

Abstract:The integrated PAC/UF technique has gained increasing applications in water treatment systems. However, the fouling and substantial PAC deposition on membrane surfaces remain perennial hurdles. To tackle these issues, on-line membrane cleaning with NaClO should be frequently performed to sustain the membrane permeability, leading to the inevitable contact between NaClO and PAC particles, which may significantly change the PAC properties, hence the entire performance of water treatment during the next round of operation. This study simulated the two reactions between PACs and NaClO (i.e. deposited PAC with high-concentration NaClO and suspended PAC with low-concentration NaClO) based on the current practice of on-line membrane cleaning, and further investigated the impacts of NaClO-induced PAC variations on PAC/UF performance. The results showed that (i) the adsorption capacities of altered PACs for humic acid (HA), bovine serum albumin (BSA) as well as contaminants in surface water were seriously weakened because of the decreased specific surface area and pore volume; (ii) The altered PAC surface became more hydrophilic, presumably leading to the higher deposition on membrane surface. Besides, (iii) the PAC deposition amounts were all enhanced by the presence of BSA, while substantially decreased by HA. Further addition of Ca2+ with HA dramatically increased PAC deposition probably by forming the cross-linked molecular chains to connect PAC-PAC or PAC-membrane. As a result, membrane fouling in PAC/UF water treatment system was remarkedly aggravated when the altered PACs were applied due to NaClO exposure. Meanwhile, the surface water treatment performances in terms of CODMn removal, UV254 removal and turbidity removal significantly decreased, implying the adverse impacts of employing such altered PAC in the practical water treatment system. Given on-line chemical cleaning is frequently conducted during a long-term operation, the current study raised serious concerns on membrane cleaning induced PAC variations and potentially negative influences on the real-life PAC/UF water treatment process.

Abstract:The feasibility of utilizing a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)/sulfite-ultrafiltration system was investigated in various real water bodies, aiming to clarify the mechanism behind alleviating membrane fouling while synchronously degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) during the treatment process of Yangtze River water. The results demonstrated that the DBD/sulfite pretreatment exhibited remarkable rates of membrane flux mitigation (>84.10 %) and efficient degradation rates of PFOA (>85.13 %), which decreased with increasing pH from 3.0 to 11.0. The presence of anions, cations, and natural organic matter slightly hindered the membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation by quenching free radicals; however, the addition of SO42- had a negligible impact. The mitigation of membrane fouling was attributed to the significant involvement of various radicals, including hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•-), electron (e-/eaq-), su-peroxide anion radicals (•O2-), and other radicals such as SO3•-, exhibiting respective contributions of 33.25 %, 28.49 %, 20.56 %, 11.32 %, and 6.39 % in a synergistic redox effect. The pretreatment effectively reduced standard blocking and cake filtration fouling mechanisms by creating a sparse fouling layer on the membrane surface while increasing its roughness. Additionally, the main active species that played a significant role in the degradation of PFOA were identified as SO4•-, •OH, and eaq-. These species contributed approximately 43.63 %, 24.39 %, and 20.65 % respectively to the degradation process. By employing mass spectrometry and density functional theory, a proposed pathway for PFOA degradation was established, effectively reducing the toxicity associated with its degradation byproducts. This study provides innovative insights into membrane-based water treatment technologies that effectively tackle both membrane fouling mitigation and PFOA degradation.
Effect of Long-Term Sodium Hypochlorite Cleaning on Silicon Carbide Ultrafiltration Membranes Prepared via Low-Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition

Abstract:Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) is widely used for the chemical cleaning of fouled ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. Various studies performed on polymeric membranes demonstrate that long-term (>100 h) exposure to NaClO deteriorates the physicochemical properties of the membranes, leading to reduced performance and service life. However, the effect of NaClO cleaning on ceramic membranes, particularly the number of cleaning cycles they can undergo to alleviate irreversible fouling, remains poorly understood. Silicon carbide (SiC) membranes have garnered widespread attention for water and wastewater treatment, but their chemical stability in NaClO has not been studied. Low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LP-CVD) provides a simple and economical route to prepare/modify ceramic membranes. As such, LP-CVD facilitates the preparation of SiC membranes: (a) in a single step; and (b) at much lower temperatures (700–900 °C) in comparison with sol-gel methods (ca. 2000 °C). In this work, SiC ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were prepared via LP-CVD at two different deposition temperatures and pressures. Subsequently, their chemical stability in NaClO was investigated over 200 h of aging. Afterward, the properties and performance of as-prepared SiC UF membranes were evaluated before and after aging to determine the optimal deposition conditions. Our results indicate that the SiC UF membrane prepared via LP-CVD at 860 °C and 100 mTorr exhibited excellent resistance to NaClO aging, while the membrane prepared at 750 °C and 600 mTorr significantly deteriorated. These findings not only highlight a novel preparation route for SiC membranes in a single step via LP-CVD, but also provide new insights about the careful selection of LP-CVD conditions for SiC membranes to ensure their long-term performance and robustness under harsh chemical cleaning conditions.

Effective and low-toxicity: A membrane cleaning method using peroxymonosulfate catalytic chlorination

Abstract:In chemical membrane cleaning, the challenge is to efficiently remove irreversible fouling while minimizing the impact on membrane materials. Particularly, traditional hypochlorite cleaning will further lead to the generation of toxic halogenated by-products. To address these issues, a combined system composed of peroxymonosulfate and chloride (PMS/Cl-) was applied to clean irreversible-humic-acid-fouled polyethersulfone (PES) membranes. After fouled membranes were soaked for 1 h in a PMS/Cl- solution (10 mM/15 mM) at 25 °C under neutral conditions, 94% flux recovery and 96% resistance removal were realized. Surface properties of virgin and cleaned membranes were very similar, confirming the effectiveness of the PMS/Cl- solution in removing irreversible foulants. The stability of membrane separation performance during multiple fouling and cleaning cycles further confirmed the minimal impact on membrane materials. Rapid diminution of the peaks centered in the region of fulvic-like and humic-like components, monitored under 3D-fluorescence for the cleaning solution, was attributed to PMS-catalyzed chlorination, thereby revealing the primary foulant detachment mechanism. Crucially, the approach exhibited lower toxicity than hypochlorite, as evidenced by reduced halogenated by-products and lower acute toxicity to Photobacterium phosphoreum T3. Overall, this novel cleaning system is promising for the efficient and environmentally friendly removal of irreversible organic foulants in practical water-treatment.

Abstract:On-line membrane cleaning with NaClO is frequently implemented during membrane-based water treatment, where diverse aqueous microorganisms inevitably react with NaClO, leading to a significant impact on the next-round operation. This study filled the knowledge gap to explore the respective response of bacteria, algae and fungi to NaClO exposure. The results indicated that the three types of microorganisms exhibited distinct behaviors to NaClO attack. Specifically, E. coli showed stronger adaptation to NaClO by releasing more EPS and agglomeration behavior to resist chemical attack, thereby maintaining a higher survival rate. In contrast, M. aeruginosa and Aspergillus might experience significant cell death caused by substantial production of ROS. During subsequent ultrafiltration, accelerated biofouling development with a thinner biofilm layer was found for all three microorganisms exposed to NaClO, especially for M. aeruginosa and Aspergillus who formed the biofilms with remarkable stratified structures. The biofilm formed by E. coli was strongly correlated with EPS secretion, while excessive production of ROS and attachment of survived cells on membrane were considered as crucial factors controlling the biofilm development for M. aeruginosa and Aspergillus . Detailed responding mechanisms to NaClO cleaning were eventually proposed for the respective three microorganisms, which offered new insight into UF system operation for water treatment.

Abstract:Herein, the effects of cleaning with sodium hydroxide and citric acid solutions as cleaning reagents on the changes in the properties of two hollow-fiber PVDF microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes fouled with organic and inorganic matter were investigated. Accelerated membrane ageing was induced by use of high concentrations of tannic acid and iron oxide (Fe2O3) particles in the feed water; these conditions were kept with different membrane soaking times to observe temporal effects. It was found that tannic acid molecules adsorb onto the membrane surface that results in changes in surface characteristics, particularly surface functional groups that are responsible for enhancing membrane’s hydrophilicity. Experimental results demonstrate that NaOH had a stronger effect on the tensile strength and surface chemistry of the fouled MF and UF membranes than citric acid. Prediction of lifetime by an exponential (decay) model confirmed that the UF membrane cleaned with NaOH would be aged within about 1.8 years and the MF membrane after about 5 years, at cleaning every 15 days, downtime 2 h per cleaning, when a 10% tensile strength decrease against the original membrane is allowed.

Abstract:Resolving the interfacial behaviors plays a pivotal role in elucidating the formation of membrane fouling. However, quantifying the short-term rapid changes in these processes remains challenging, particularly for complex solutions like food waste digestate. In this study, a poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was employed to filter food waste digestate; the dynamic membrane-foulant and foulant-foulant interactions during the initial filtration were in situ examined using optical coherence tomography (OCT) to ascertain the effects of varying concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl). Results indicate that NaCl could alter the solution structure by disrupting the hydration bonds. The hydration repulsion caused by Na+ ions gave rise to a slower deposition of foulants, thereby delaying the transition from membrane-foulant to foulant-foulant interactions; the hydration-repulsion effect was intensified by increasing the salt concentration. On the other hand, when foulant-foulant interactions began to dominate, compression of the electric double layer could result from the elevated ionic strength and thereby contribute to a denser cake layer. Moreover, the hydrated layer could also be an effective inhibitor to the internal fouling that plagues the membrane cleaning. These mechanistic insights would be in favor of designing more efficient fouling-control strategies for membrane-based treatment of high salinity wastewater.

Abstract:The use of chlorine as a pretreatment of water treatment and desalination processes causes a loss in performance and lifespan of the membranes usually employed in these processes. Polyester (PE) membranes have been proposed as an alternative due to the absence of amidic hydrogen; however, fabricating PE composite membranes with equivalent performance and high tolerance towards chlorine has been proven to be challenging. In this work, we evaluate the effects of monomer concentration and blends, proton scavenger, surfactant concentration, reaction time and temperature on interfacial polymerization (IP) of trimesoyl chloride and resorcinol. Reaction temperature was the most crucial factor to achieve a PE coating film with high crosslinking degree (XD), high divalent rejection and excellent chlorine tolerance. The resorcinol membrane showed a Na 2 SO 4 rejection of >90 % before and after 6000 ppmh-Cl 2 at pH 7. XPS analysis showed that chlorination of PE membranes resulted in loss of CC bonds and increase in C –C and C –O bonds. At high crosslinking degrees, the changes caused by chlorine were minimal. Based on the characterization and the performance of the chlorinated membranes, ring chlorination followed by ring hydrolysis is the proposed mechanism for degradation of lower XD membranes.

Abstract:In order to alleviate membrane fouling and improve removal efficiency, a series of pretreatment technologies were applied to the ultrafiltration process. In this study, ClO2 was used as a pre-oxidation strategy for the ultrafiltration (UF) process. Humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA), and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were used as three typical organic model foulants, and the mixture of the three substances was used as a representation of simulated natural water. The dosages of ClO2 were 0.5, 1, 2, 4, and 8 mg/L, with 90 min pre-oxidation. The results showed that ClO2 pre-oxidation at low doses (1–2 mg/L) could alleviate the membrane flux decline caused by humus, polysaccharides, and simulated natural water, but had a limited alleviating effect on the irreversible resistance of the membrane. The interfacial free energy analysis showed that the interaction force between the membrane and the simulated natural water was also repulsive after the pre-oxidation, indicating that ClO2 pre-oxidation was an effective way to alleviate cake layer fouling by reducing the interaction between the foulant and the membrane. In addition, ClO2 oxidation activated the hidden functional groups in the raw water, resulting in an increase in the fluorescence value of humic analogs, but had a good removal effect on the fluorescence intensity of BSA. Furthermore, the membrane fouling fitting model showed that ClO2, at a low dose (1 mg/L), could change the mechanism of membrane fouling induced by simulated natural water from standard blocking and cake layer blocking to critical blocking. Overall, ClO2 pre-oxidation was an efficient pretreatment strategy for UF membrane fouling alleviation, especially for the fouling control of HA and SA at low dosages.

Abstract:Semi-aromatic polypiperazine-amide (PPA) nanofiltration (NF) membranes are widely used in water treatment applications, but the resistance to free chlorine and other biocidal agents need to be improved. Understanding the chlorination mechanisms of PPA NF membranes is of great significance for avoiding membrane degradation and developing new chlorine-resistant membranes. In this paper, the effects of chlorination on the rejection selectivity as well as the surface charge, hydrophilicity and roughness, and pore size distribution of PPA NF membranes are presented. In addition, the chlorination mechanisms of the membranes are proposed through functional groups characterization of the stripped PPA active layer, element composition analysis, quantum mechanical calculations based on density-functional theory, and use of model compound ((3,5-dimethylphenyl)(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)methanone) for PPA material. The molecular active chlorine species, HOCl, predominantly induces the cleavage of C–N bonds, whereas the primary reaction pathway caused by the ionic active chlorine species, ClO−, involves the ring-opening of benzene. Under the same chlorination conditions, HClO has a more severe impact on membrane properties and performance than ClO−. NF membranes with a looser polyamide layer are more susceptible to the attack by active chlorine species.

Application of heat-activated peroxydisulfate process for the chemical cleaning of fouled ultrafiltration membranes

Abstract:NaClO has been widely used to restore membrane flux in practical membrane cleaning processes, which would induce the formation of toxic halogenated byproducts. In this study, we proposed a novel heat-activated peroxydisulfate (heat/PDS) process to clean the membrane fouling derived from humic acid (HA). The results show that the combination of heat and PDS can achieve almost 100% recovery of permeate flux after soaking the HA-fouled membrane in 1 mmol/L PDS solution at 50 °C for 2 hours, which is attributed to the changes of HA structure and enhanced detachment of foulants from membranes. The properties of different treated membranes are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), demonstrating that the reversible and irreversible foulants could be effectively removed by heat/PDS cleaning. The filtration process and fouling mechanism of the cleaned membrane were close to that of the virgin membrane, illustrating the good reusability of the cleaned membrane. Additionally, heat/PDS which can avoid the generation of halogenated byproducts shows comparable performance to NaClO on membrane cleaning and high performance for the removal of fouling caused by sodium alginate (SA), HA-bovine serum albumin (BSA)-SA mixture and algae, further suggesting that heat/PDS would be a potential alternative for membrane cleaning in practical application.
