Abstract:Increased mean platelet volume (MPV) has been suggested as an independent risk factor for acute myocardial infarction and the increased reactivity of large platelets. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between platelet phospholipid (PL) PUFA composition and MPV in 139 free-living healthy men ages 20–55 yr (vegans, n =18; ovolacto vegetarians, n =43; modrerate meat-eaters, n =60; and high meateaters, n =18). Each subject completed a semiquantitative Food Frequency Questionnaire and gave a blood sample. Platelet PL FA composition and MPV were determined by standard methods. MPV was significantly greater in the vegans than in the ovolacto vegetarian, moderate, or high meat-eater groups ( P <0.01). Both vegan and ovolacto vegetarian groups had significantly higher platelet PL 18∶2n−6 and 22∶4n−6, and lower 20∶5n−3 and 22∶6n−3 compared with the moderate and high meat-eater groups. The vegans demonstrated a significant reduction in 20∶4n−6 and 22∶5n−3 compared with the ovolacto vegetarian, high meat-eater, and moderate meat-eater groups. Bivariate analysis results showed that MPV was significanly positively correlated with platelet PL 18∶2n−6 ( P =0.048) and negatively correlated with 20∶3n−6 ( P =0.02), 20∶5n−3 ( P =0.005), and 22∶5n−3 ( P <0.0001), respectively. In a multiple linear regression analysis, after controlling for potential confounding factors such as dietary group, age exercise, body mass index, and dietary polyunsaturated and saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrate, and fiber intake, the MPV was still strongly negatively correlated with platelet PL 20∶3n−6 ( P =0.003) and 22∶5n−3 ( P =0.001). The present data suggest that 20∶5n−3 and 20∶3n−6 may play a role in the structural function of the platelet membrane.
Relationship between mean platelet volume and prognosis of acute ischemic stroke

Abstract:Objective To study whether the mean platelet volume(MPV) is related to the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke.Methods The clinical data of 120 patients with acute ischemic stroke were retrospectively studied.The patients were classified into four groups according to the values of MPV: 7.9-9.6 fl,9.7-10.9 fl,11.0-11.8 fl and 11.9-17.8 fl.The degree of neurologic impairment was assessed by National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale(NIHSS) on admission and before discharge.Results The NIHSS scores in the four groups before discharge decreased significantly compared with those on admission.Regression analysis showed that the reduced values of NIHSS score were positively correlated with hospitalization duration,blood platelet count(PLTC),and MPV,and that PLTC and MPV were more important influencing factors.The reduced values of NIHSS in the 9.7-10.9 fl group were significantly different from those in the other three groups.Conclusions MPV is probably related to the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke.

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the clinical significance of detecting platelet parameters in platelet transfusion patients by Investigating the relationship between platelet parameters and efficacy of platelet transfusion and prognosis.Methods A total of 50 patients who underwent platelet transfusion in our hospital in 2014 to 2016 were reviewed.Patients divided into two groups (with normal platelet counts group or subnormal platelet counts group) according to outcomes of blood biochemistry and routine after five days of platelets transfusion.Platelet parameters (platelet count,platelet distribution width,mean platelet volume,large platelet ratio) and CCI were evaluated by statistical analysis.Results The numbers of patients with CCI＞4.5 in normal platelet counts group is 21 (77.78％),that in subnormal platelet counts group is 11 (47.83％).Platelet parameters before transfusion showed no significant difference between two groups (P＞ 0.05).After transfusion,in normal platelet counts group Plt,PDW,MPV and P-LCR were significantly higher than another group (P＜0.01).MPV and P-LCR were increased in normal platelet counts group,and decreased in normal platelet counts group after transfusion.Condusion Detection of platelet parameters,especially MPV and P-LCR,is important for evaluating the efficacy and prognosis of platelet transfusion.

Abstract:I would like to thank Dr Bayir and colleagues for their thoughtful insights into our previous work [1]. In their comments, they pointed out that the standardization of platelet indices measurement was the major obstacle inpreventingwide clinical application forillnessseverity evaluation, follow-up, and outcome prediction in critically ill patients [2]. It is true that, in our study, these standardized procedures such as type and amount of anticoagulant in the blood collection tube, environment of blood taking, and duration between blood taking and examination were not considered. Instead, platelet indices were measured in blood routines byusingautomated analyzer. In other words, platelet indices were by-products of the whole blood routines, together with the white blood cells, erythrocytes, and neutrophils. This is the real-world setting as being performed in our daily clinical practice. However, the time interval between blood taking and measurement is very short in our institution because we have specialized medical personnel to send blood samples immediately after blood taking. Although this factor cannot be incorporated into our analysis (the time interval was not recorded in the electronic medical record system), I could be sure it was within

Abstract:BACKGROUND:Currently, the studies on the relationship between type 2 diabetes and platelets indicators were carried out on a selective small sample population generally. Large sample studies in this area are rare, especially in Chinese population. In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between type 2 diabetes and the mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet count (PLT) and platelet distribution width (PDW).METHODS:This is a cross-sectional analysis of the routine health examination data from 20128 participants with complete baseline data in Yinzhou District 2013. The detection of indicators in this study was completed by automatic hematology analyzer.RESULTS:The PDW and PLT were not significantly different between diabetic group and non-diabetic group, (16.00% vs. 16.00%, P=0.88, and 194*109/L vs. 196*109/L, P=0.05 respectively). The MPV was significantly higher in diabetic group (9.3fl vs. 9.2fl, P<0.05). MPV was an independent risk factor of diabetes mellitus (Unadjusted OR=1.07 (95% CI: 1.03, 1.11), Adjusted for age, sex OR=1.07 (95% CI: 1.02, 1.12)). The adjusted odds ratio of diabetes rose with increasing MPV levels and were most pronounced in subjects with MPV levels exceeding the 90th percentile (MPV ≥10.70 fl, Crude or=1.23 adjusted or=1.19).CONCLUSION:There was no relationship between the presence of diabetes with PDW and PLT. The MPV was independently associated with the presence of diabetes.
The Routine Measurement of Platelet Size Using Sodium Citrate Alone as the Anticoagulant

Abstract:Summary Mean platelet volume (MPV), a measure of platelet size, is becoming recognised as an important marker of platelet function. However, platelets swell in edetic acid (EDTA), the Standard haematology anticoagulant, in a time-dependent manner making such measurements potentially unreliable. The effect of incubation time on MPV, and platelet distribution width (PDW), as measured in EDTA, low (1:9 volume/volume with blood) or high (1:4 v/v with blood) concentration sodium citrate was studied. MPV measured in high concentration sodium citrate did not change with time in contrast to MPV measured in either low concentration sodium citrate or EDTA which both increased in an inverse exponential fashion. MPV and PDW, measured in high concentration sodium citrate, had similar within-assay and between-assay coefficients of Variation as other platelet, red cell and white cell haematology variables measured in EDTA: MPV 1.4%, 2.1%; PDW 1.4%, 1.5%; MCV 0.4%, 0.7%; PC 3.1%, 6.1%; WCC 1.5%, 7.3%; Hb 2.1%, 2.4% respectively. MPV measured in EDTA and corrected for incubation time approximated to, but was higher than, the MPV measured in high concentration sodium citrate. PDW correlated inversely with platelet count (r = <0.415, 2p <0.001). MPV may be measured in sodium citrate (at 1:4 v/v with blood) alone with a better accuracy and reproducibility than similar measurements made in EDTA. Furthermore, such measurements are not influenced by incubation time, unlike for EDTA.

Abstract:Platelet counts which are generated by impedance methods (PLT-I) in cases of thrombocytopenia can be unreliable due to interference of red cells. We evaluated utility of optical platelet counts on HORIBA Yumizen H2500 and platelet count by digital morphology platform CellaVision DM1200 with multivariate analysis for understanding causes in cases of thrombocytopenia with platelet interference flag. A total of 150 samples with platelet counts < 150 X 10 9 /L (PLT-I) were selected for this study. Platelet counts were then analyzed in parallel within 6 h of collection using optical technique (PLT-O) and also PLT-D (Digitalized Smear techniques). Platelet count on peripheral smear was also performed by two pathologists (MPC). Statistical analysis using Pearson's correlation, Bland—Altmann plot analysis and multivariate regression analysis was performed. The mean platelet count with PLT-I was 74.6 × 10 9 /L while this was significantly higher in PLT-O (108.9 × 10 9 /L). Pearson's correlation between PLT-O and MPC as well as PLT-D and MPC showed a good correlation between the two values, proving the utility of PLT-O over PLT-I in cases of RBC -platelet interference flags. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated a positive effect of MPV and indicated that with increase in MPV the difference between PLT-I and PLT-O is significantly affected. PLT-O was found to give more accurate platelet count than PLT-I in cases of thrombocytopenia with platelet interference flag. Also, digital morphology is a useful alternative to manual platelet count estimation.

Abstract:The impact of flow disturbances on platelet adhesion is complex and incompletely understood. At the molecular scale, platelet glycoprotein Ibα (GPIbα) must associate with the von Willebrand factor A1 domain (VWF-A1) with a rapid on-rate under high hemodynamic forces, as occurs in arterial thrombosis, where various transport mechanisms are at work. Here, we theoretically modeled the coupled transport-reaction process of the two-dimensional (2D) receptor-ligand association kinetics in a biomembrane force probe to explicitly account for the effects of molecular length, confinement stiffness, medium viscosity, surface curvature, and separation distance. We experimentally verified the theoretical approach by visualizing association and dissociation of individual VWF-A1-GPIbα bonds in a real-time thermal fluctuation assay. The apparent on-rate, reciprocal of the average time intervals between sequential bonds, decreased with the increasing gap distance between A1- and GPIbα-bearing surfaces with an 80-nm threshold (beyond which bond formation became prohibitive) identified as the combined contour length of the receptor and ligand molecules. The biomembrane force probe spring constant and diffusivity of the protein-bearing beads also significantly influenced the apparent on-rate, in accordance with the proposed transport mechanisms. The global agreement between the experimental data and the model predictions supports the hypothesis that receptor-ligand association behaves distinctly in the transport- and reaction-limited scenarios. To our knowledge, our results represent the first detailed quantification of physical regulation of the 2D on-rate that allows platelets to sense and respond to local changes in their hemodynamic environment. In addition, they provide an approach for determining the intrinsic kinetic parameters that employs simultaneous experimental measurements and theoretical modeling of bond association in a single assay. The 2D intrinsic forward rate for VWF-A1-GPIbα association was determined from the measurements to be (3.5 ± 0.67) × 10(-4)μm(2) s(-1).
Volume Regulation and Nonosmotic Volume of Individual Human Platelets Quantified by High-Speed Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy

Abstract:Background Platelets are anucleate cells that play an important role in wound closure following vessel injury. Maintaining a constant platelet volume is critical for platelet function. For example, water-induced swelling can promote procoagulant activity and initiate thrombosis. However, techniques for measuring changes in platelet volume such as light transmittance or impedance techniques have inherent limitations as they only allow qualitative measurements or do not work on the single-cell level. Methods Here, we introduce high-speed scanning ion conductance microscopy (HS-SICM) as a new platform for studying volume regulation mechanisms of individual platelets. We optimized HS-SICM to quantitatively image the morphology of adherent platelets as a function of time at scanning speeds up to 7 seconds per frame and with 0.1 fL precision. Results We demonstrate that HS-SICM can quantitatively measure the rapid swelling of individual platelets after a hypotonic shock and the following regulatory volume decrease (RVD). We found that the RVD of thrombin-, ADP-, and collagen-activated platelets was significantly reduced compared with nonactivated platelets. Applying the Boyle–van't Hoff relationship allowed us to extract the nonosmotic volume and volume fraction on a single-platelet level. Activation by thrombin or ADP, but not by collagen, resulted in a decrease of the nonosmotic volume, likely due to a release reaction, leaving the total volume unaffected. Conclusion This work shows that HS-SICM is a versatile tool for resolving rapid morphological changes and volume dynamics of adherent living platelets. Abstract:Abstract Neutrophils have a central role in the inflammatory response and fight infection. Platelets are essential for hemostasis and thrombosis and fighting vascular damage. Studies in man show that the interaction between these cells can modulate their function. We aimed to assess the effect of possible relationships between the platelet count in whole blood on neutrophil activation. Blood samples (50 mL) from five clinically healthy Holstein Friesian cows at the NC A&T Dairy research unit were collected. Differential white blood cell counts were conducted using a VetScan (Zoetis). Neutrophils were isolated through differential centrifugation and hypotonic lysis of red blood cells. Duplicate samples of neutrophils were maintained in phosphate-buffered saline for 30 minutes at 37 °C. The total and viable neutrophil count was evaluated using TC20 (Bio-Rad). Samples were centrifuged. The supernatant was used to determine the concentration of total secreted protein using the Bicinchoninic acid assay (Pierce). Enumeration of bovine blood platelets and white blood cells was accomplished using the Vetscan study found that there was no significant difference observed in the total cell count or percent viability in neutrophils between the five cows (P > 0.05). However, protein concentration showed a significant change between animals. Correlations between total platelet count, neutrophil count, viability, and protein secretion were evaluated. No correlation was found between neutrophil count, protein secretion in isolated neutrophils and concentration of platelets in whole cow blood. The number of circulating platelets was not related to neutrophil viability or protein secretion. This approach can be used in further investigation using imaging and is needed to evaluate the effect and functional consequences of interactions between platelets and neutrophils in cow blood.

A population-based study of an Italian genetic isolate reveals that mean platelet volume is not a risk factor for thrombosis

Abstract:Introduction: Several studies revealed that mean platelet volume (MPV) was larger in the acute phase of arterial and venous thrombosis and predicted a poor clinical outcome. It has been suggested that MPV is a risk factor for thrombosis. However, it is unclear whether increased platelet size is a cause or a consequence of thrombosis. It was the objective of this study to verify whether MPV is a risk factor for arterial and venous thrombosis. Methods: We search for associations between platelet parameters and thrombosis by a population-based study in 11,084 inhabitants of an Italian genetic isolate characterized by wide variability of platelet parameters. To validate this methodology of investigation, we also evaluated whether it was able to identify several well known thrombotic risk factors in the study population. Results: Statistical analysis confirmed that male gender, ageing, hypertension, high total cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and smoking were risk factors for arterial thrombosis, while alcohol consumption had a protective effect. Female gender, ageing, pregnancy, estroprogestinic treatment, obesity, varicose veins were associated with venous thrombosis. At variance, MPV and platelet count were unrelated to previous thrombotic events. However, MPV was negatively correlated with the time since the last thrombotic event. Conclusions: This study indicated that an epidemiologic study of a population isolate is appropriate for the identification of thrombotic risk factors, but it failed to identify such a role for MPV. Thus, we suggest that the increased MPV previously described in subjects with acute thrombosis was a consequence instead of a cause of thrombosis.

Abstract:Platelet count, aggregability and volume in the postoperative course of 20 patients were examined. Platelet count was decreased on the 1st postoperative d, and increased on the 7th and 14th d compared with the preoperative value. The maximal aggregation rate of platelets induced by ADP was decreased on the 3rd postoperative d, and then recovered to the preoperative level. In contrast, platelet volume was only slightly increased on the 3rd postoperative d. In this study, there was no correlation between platelet aggregability and platelet volume in PRP. We have proposed one parameter, 'platelet concentration ratio' (platelet concentration in PRP/platelet concentration in whole blood). In the postoperative course, this concentration ratio changed depending on platelet volume, and possibly on other conditions of blood such as hematocrit, viscosity and specific gravity. The concentration ratio influenced the subpopulations of platelets in PRP. Platelet aggregation tests may be performed using PRP in which platelet subpopulations differ from those in whole blood, especially in the postoperative state.

Abstract:The shape and parameters of platelet size distributions were studied in 50 normal persons and 97 patients in order to test the proposed thesis that platelet size heterogeneity results mainly from aging in the circulation. This thesis was contradicted (1) by size distributions of age-homogeneous, newly-born cell populations which were lognormal with increased (instead of decreased) dispersion of volumes and (2) by the macrothrombocytosis found in some populations with normal age distribution. For these reasons, thrombocytopoiesis appeared to play the major role in determining platelet size. A model was built in which the volume variation of platelet territories due to megakaryocyte growth and membrane demarcation at each step of maturation was a random proportion of the previous value of the volume. This model explains the lognormal shape of both newborn and circulating platelet size distributions. It also implies that (1) the mean and standard deviation of platelet logvolumes depend on the rates of volume change of the individual platelet territories (growth rate minus demarcation rate) as well as on megakaryocyte maturation time; (2) platelet hyperdestruction causes an increase in the mean and dispersion of the rates of territory volume change; (3) Mediterranean macrothrombocytosis and some hereditary macrothrombocytotic thrombocytopenias or dysthrombocytopoieses reflect a diminished rate of territory demarcation, and (4) platelet size heterogeneity is caused mainly by the variations in territory growth and demarcation and not by aging in the circulation.

Abstract:Introduction: Thrombocytopenia, characterized by a low platelet count, poses a risk of abnormal bleeding. Traditional diagnostic methods focus on platelet count alone, but emerging evidence suggests that platelet indices like mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) could provide valuable insights. This study aims to investigate the role of platelet indices in thrombocytopenia assessment, exploring their potential as additional diagnostic and prognostic markers. Methodology: Over a five-month period, this prospective study enrolled 80 adult patients with thrombocytopenia. Platelet indices were measured using an automated blood cell analyzer (SYSMEX XN 1000; Sysmex Corporation, Kobe, Japan), and statistical analyses were performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Version 23.0, Armonk, NY). Results: The study participants showed significant age differences between hypoproductive and hyperproductive thrombocytopenia groups but no significant gender-based disparities. While platelet count and plateletcrit (PCT) didn't differ significantly between groups, individuals with hyperdestructive thrombocytopenia had higher MPV values. Platelet indices varied across clinical conditions, highlighting their potential diagnostic and prognostic value. Conclusion: Platelet indices like MPV, along with platelet count and PCT, offer insights into thrombocytopenia causes and prognosis. Further research is needed to confirm these findings, but integrating platelet indices into clinical practice could inform treatment decisions and reduce unnecessary procedures like bone marrow biopsies and imaging studies.

Abstract:Apart from their classical roles, both platelets and vitamin D play important roles in inflammation and infectious diseases. This study evaluated the platelet response to viral respiratory tract infection in children aged 4–16 years, 32 with influenza, 27 with non-influenza viral infection tested by nasopharyngeal swab and 21 healthy children of the same age. Blood count, including platelet count (PLT), mean platelet volume (MPV) and other platelet indices, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C-reactive protein (CRP) and vitamin D (vit D) levels were compared. The influenza group showed lower PLT and platelet mass (PLT * MPV), and the non-influenza group showed significantly lower MPV, which was correlated with the vit D levels, but not CRP or ESR, and the value vit D * MPV was significantly lower in this group. These results revealed that platelet activation in viral respiratory tract infections in children, as measured by MPV, is related to the vit D level, with differences between influenza and non-influenza infection. Conclusions Viral respiratory tract infection in children can diminish the platelet size most likely by suppressing the platelet activation. This response is associated with low levels of vit D. Whether the vit D status is associated with the virus-platelet immune/inflammatory process needs further investigation.

Abstract:Platelet size has been demonstrated to reflect platelet activity and seems to be a useful predictive and prognostic biomarker of cardiovascular events. It is associated with a variety of prothrombotic and proinflammatory diseases. The aim is a review of literature reports concerning changes in the mean platelet volume (MPV) and its possible role as a biomarker in inflammatory processes and neoplastic diseases. PubMed database was searched for sources using the following keywords: platelet activation, platelet count, mean platelet volume and: inflammation, cancer/tumor, cardiovascular diseases, myocardial infarction, diabetes, lupus disease, rheumatoid arthritis, tuberculosis, ulcerative colitis, renal disease, pulmonary disease, influencing factors, age, gender, genetic factors, oral contraceptives, smoking, lifestyle, methods, standardization, and hematological analyzer. Preference was given to the sources which were published within the past 20 years. Increased MPV was observed in cardiovascular diseases, cerebral stroke, respiratory diseases, chronic renal failure, intestine diseases, rheumatoid diseases, diabetes, and various cancers. Decreased MPV was noted in tuberculosis during disease exacerbation, ulcerative colitis, SLE in adult, and different neoplastic diseases. The study of MPV can provide important information on the course and prognosis in many inflammatory conditions. Therefore, from the clinical point of view, it would be interesting to establish an MPV cut-off value indicating the intensity of inflammatory process, presence of the disease, increased risk of disease development, increased risk of thrombotic complications, increased risk of death, and patient’s response on applied treatment. Nevertheless, this aspect of MPV evaluation allowing its use in clinical practice is limited and requires further studies.

Abstract:<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Abstract</h3> <p class="a-plus-plus">We develop a mathematical model of platelet, megakaryocyte, and thrombopoietin dynamics in humans. We show that there is a single stationary solution that can undergo a Hopf bifurcation, and use this information to investigate both normal and pathological platelet production, specifically cyclic thrombocytopenia. Carefully estimating model parameters from laboratory and clinical data, we then argue that a subset of parameters are involved in the genesis of cyclic thrombocytopenia based on clinical information. We provide model fits to the existing data for both platelet counts and thrombopoietin levels by changing four parameters that have physiological correlates. Our results indicate that the primary change in cyclic thrombocytopenia is an interference with, or destruction of, the thrombopoietin receptor with secondary changes in other processes, including immune-mediated destruction of platelets and megakaryocyte deficiency and failure in platelet production. This study contributes to the understanding of the origin of cyclic thrombocytopenia as well as extending the modeling of thrombopoiesis.</p>

Abstract:(1) Background: Despite advancements in medical research and discoveries, heart failure (HF) still represents a significant and prevalent public health challenge. It is characterized by persistently high mortality and morbidity rates, along with increased rates of readmissions, particularly among the elderly population. (2) Methods: This study was conducted retrospectively on 260 patients with stable or decompensated chronic HF. The parameter of interest in the study population was the mean platelet volume (MPV), and the main objective of the research was to identify a possible relationship between MPV and several variables—biological (NT-proBNP, presepsin, red cell distribution width (RDW)), electrocardiographic (atrial fibrillation (AFib) rhythm, sinus rhythm (SR)), and echocardiographic (left ventricle ejection fraction (LVEF), left atrial (LA) diameter, left ventricle (LV) diameter, pulmonary hypertension (PH)). (3) Results: By applying logistic and linear regression models, we assessed whether there is a correlation between MPV and biological, electrocardiographic, and echocardiographic variables in patients with HF. The results revealed linear relationships between MPV and NT pro-BNP values and between MPV and RDW values, and an increased probability for the patients to have an AFib rhythm, reduced LVEF, dilated LA, dilated LV, and PH as their MPV value increases. The results were deemed statistically relevant based on a p-value below 0.05. (4) Conclusions: Through regression model analyses, our research revealed that certain negative variables in HF patients such as increased levels of NT-proBNP, increased levels of RDW, AFib rhythm, reduced LVEF, dilated LA, dilated LV, and PH, could be predicted based on MPV values.

Abstract:Purpose/objectives: To determine whether infusion method influences the quality of platelets transfused. Design: Linked in vitro and in vivo study. Quasi-experimental design for in vitro and cross-over design with balanced randomization for in vivo. Setting: Pediatric cancer center in the midsouthern United States. Sample: Pheresed/pooled platelet units in vitro (n = 12). In vivo convenience sample of 26 children, ages 2-19 years, with cancer and thrombocytopenia who required platelet transfusion. Methods: Two infusion pumps (IMED 980 and Gemini, IMED Corp., San Diego, CA) versus gravity flow for in vitro platelet infusion. Gemini infusion pump versus gravity flow for in vivo platelet transfusion. Main outcome measures: Platelet count, morphology score, and corrected count increment. Findings: No significant differences noted in platelet count or morphology score among or across the three infusion methods in vitro. No significant differences noted between the two infusion methods in platelet count or corrected count increment in vivo. Conclusions: Although limited to a specific patient population, setting, and infusion device, findings revealed that the pump was clinically acceptable because it did not negatively affect platelet recovery. Replication of this study with other infusion devices is recommended. Implications for nursing practice: Study findings validate the current nursing procedure for the administration of platelets at the study setting. Use of infusion pumps for platelet transfusions is time-efficient and energy-efficient for nurses because the pumps offer a well-controlled infusion rate, accurate volume measurement, and an alarm system for monitoring the infusion.
