Abstract:This paper investigates the problem of resilient consensus under malicious attacks for multiagent systems. Compared with most of existing works, a more general attack model is considered, where malicious agents can neighbor and collude with each other and the number of tolerable attacks is not limited by the network connectivity, which makes the problem more challenging. To solve this problem, we exploit the mobile agents as the detectors, and design the resilient consensus algorithm with mobile detectors (MRCA). MRCA includes basic average iteration process and the detection algorithms of both static and mobile agents. We prove that under MRCA, malicious agents will be detected by mobile agents and isolated by normal agents in finite time in expectation and thus the convergence can be achieved. We also show that MRCA can tolerate neighboring malicious attacks and the number of tolerable attacks is not limited by the network connectivity. Simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of MRCA and validate the correctness of the theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper investigates the consensus problem of the multi-agent systems when subjected to external and malicious data injections. In particular, the primary objective is to develop a resilient network in the presence of attacks which aim to destabilize consensus dynamics by injecting bounded signals stealthily. To this end, a competitive strategy was utilized to establish a hidden layer of virtual system interconnected with the original system, so that the leader–follower consensus of the multi-agent systems can be guaranteed under proper topological conditions, and the technique derivation provides explicit rules on how to ensure stability of the overall system. Simulation results validate the theoretical contributions of this paper.

Abstract:Due to the openness of communication network and the complexity of system structures, multi-agent systems are vulnerable to malicious network attacks, which can cause intense instability to these systems. This article provides a survey of state-of-the-art results of network attacks on multi-agent systems. Recent advances on three types of attacks, i.e., those on DoS attacks, spoofing attacks and Byzantine attacks, the three main network attacks, are reviewed. Their attack mechanisms are introduced, and the attack model and the resilient consensus control structure are discussed, respectively, in detail, in terms of the theoretical innovation, the critical limitations and the change of the application. Moreover, some of the existing results along this line are given in a tutorial-like fashion. In the end, some challenges and open issues are indicated to guide future development directions of the resilient consensus of multi-agent system under network attacks.

Abstract:This article proposes a resilient adaptive consensus control scheme for uncertain multi-agent systems subjected to denial-of-service attacks. Due to the denial-of-service attacks, communication between individual agents is disrupted during the attack execution, impacting the realization of consensus in the multi-agent system. To achieve consensus tracking under denial-of-service attacks, a distributed observer is introduced to monitor the dynamics of the leader. Additionally, for uncertain multi-agent systems, a reinforcement learning algorithm with an identifier-agent-critic structure is employed to design a resilient optimized consensus tracking algorithm. In the simulation section, examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Abstract:This article investigates the secure and privacy-preserving consensus problem of multi-agent systems (MASs) with directed interaction topologies under multiple cyber attacks, which contain deception attacks and DoS attacks. First, a unified attack model is introduced to characterize such a multiple attack phenomenon. Besides, considering the existence of eavesdroppers who can intercept the data transmitted on the links, a fully distributed agent value reconstruction method based on the idea of state decomposition is designed to prevent the leakage of the agent's initial information. Then, a novel privacy-preserving adaptive resilient consensus algorithm (PPARCA) with certain graph robustness condition for MASs under the multiple cyber attacks is proposed. The algorithm adaptively takes different countermeasures in the face of different cyber attacks. PPARCA uses the reconstructed agents' states and combines with the modified Secure Acceptance and Broadcast Algorithm (SABA). Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed algorithm can effectively protect the privacy of the initial state of the agents, and reach resilient consensus in the face of cyber attacks. Finally, numerical simulations and Raspberry Pi MASs practical application experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Abstract:This paper concerns the consensus and formation of a network of mobile autonomous agents in adversarial settings where a group of malicious (compromised) agents are subject to deception attacks. In addition, the communication network is arbitrarily time-varying and subject to intermittent connections, possibly imposed by denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. We provide explicit bounds for network connectivity in an integral sense, enabling the characterization of the system's resilience to specific classes of adversarial attacks. We also show that under the condition of connectivity in an integral sense uniformly in time, the system is finite-gain $\mathcal{L}_{p}$ stable and uniformly exponentially fast consensus and formation are achievable, provided malicious agents are detected and isolated from the network. We present a distributed and reconfigurable framework with theoretical guarantees for detecting malicious agents, allowing for the resilient cooperation of the remaining cooperative agents. Simulation studies are provided to illustrate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:<p>In this paper, we first address adverse effects of attacks on distributed synchronization of multi-agent systems, by providing conditions under which an attacker can destabilize the underlying network, as well as another set of conditions under which local neighborhood tracking errors of intact agents converge to zero. Based on this analysis, we propose a Kullback–Libeler divergence based criterion in view of which each agent detects its neighbors' misbehavior and, consequently, forms a self-belief about the trustworthiness of the information it receives. Agents continuously update their self-beliefs and communicate them with their neighbors to inform them of the significance of their outgoing information. Moreover, if the self-belief of an agent is low, it forms trust on its neighbors. Agents incorporate their neighbors' self-beliefs and their own trust values on their control protocols to slow down and mitigate attacks. We show that using the proposed resilient approach, an agent discards the information it receives from a neighbor only if its neighbor is compromised, and not solely based on the discrepancy among neighbors' information, which might be caused by legitimate changes, and not attacks. The proposed approach is guaranteed to work under mild connectivity assumptions.</p>

Abstract:This article focuses on the problem of resilient leader-following consensus for multiagent systems against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Two update strategies based on event/self-triggering are proposed for the control protocols to handle the leader-following consensus in unreliable shared networks. We first propose a dynamic event-triggered communication scheme to mitigate unnecessary information transfer through energy-limited and vulnerable networks. Continuous communication between agents can be avoided. DoS attacks are supposed to be aperiodic and asynchronous at different edges. The concept of valid DoS attack interval is introduced, and the frequency and duration of attacks are analyzed. The leader-following consensus can be achieved when there exist DoS attacks using the dynamic event-based control strategy. Then, to avoid continuous event detection and save computation resources, a self-triggered communication function is developed. The next triggering moment is predetermined with the latest received state information, and the Zeno behavior is eliminated for the feasibility of the event/self-triggering scheme. Finally, a simulation is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed update strategies and control protocols.

Abstract:This article addresses secure consensus of discrete multiagent systems (DMASs) with information exchange under Multi-Round Robin Protocol (MRRP). Since the information exchange among agents is via the constrained networked transmission channel, it implies that the communication resources should be fully utilized. To overcome this issue, MRRP is employed to adjust the data packet transmissions and conserve the limited network resources. Considering that the transmitted signals may be tampered by malicious attacks during transmission process, an new control strategy is presented taking the negative effects of the deception and injection attacks into account. Based on the augmented system model, a sufficient condition is attained. Moreover, the distributed controller gain is obtained such that the DMASs reach consensus with definite bound in mean-square sense. One simulation example is exploited to demonstrate the validity of the acquired consensus control strategy.

Abstract:In this paper, we address resilient consensus of second-order discrete-time multi-agent systems with malicious agent that updates its value arbitrarily. Two kinds of attack forms (f-local and f-total) are presented. Under certain graph robustness condition, the proposed resilient algorithm could guarantee that all normal agents are not affected by the malicious agents to reach an agreement, and the final consensus value lies in a safety interval. Some numerical examples are finally given to demonstrate the validity of theoretical results.

Abstract:This paper considers the multi-dimensional consensus in networked systems, where some of the agents might be misbehaving (or faulty). Despite the influence of these misbehaviors, the benign agents aim to reach an agreement while avoiding being seriously influenced by the faulty ones. To this end, this paper first considers a general class of consensus algorithms, where each benign agent computes an “auxiliary point” based on the received values and moves its state towards this point. Concerning this generic form, we present conditions for achieving resilient consensus and obtain a lower bound on the exponential convergence rate. Assuming that the number of malicious agents is upper bounded, two specific resilient consensus algorithms are further developed based on the obtained conditions. Particularly, the first solution, based on Helly’s Theorem, achieves the consensus within the convex hull formed by the benign agents’ initial states, where the auxiliary point can be efficiently computed through linear programming. On the other hand, the second algorithm serves as a “built-in” security guarantee for standard average consensus algorithms, in the sense that its performance coincides exactly with that of the standard ones in the absence of faulty nodes while also resisting the serious influence of the misbehaving ones in adversarial environment. Some numerical examples are provided in the end to verify the theoretical results.

Abstract:This brief analyzes the robust secure consensus control problem for linear multi-agent systems under random Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks and external disturbances. When agents communicate with its neighbors, a malicious attacker randomly carries out DoS attacks to certain communication channels in the network, thereby causing the communication topology to be Markovian switching. Solely depending on the immediate partial information per node rather than global information, a fully distributed robust secure consensus protocol is put forward under DoS attacks and external disturbances by using the Lyapunov function analysis. A simulation case of leader-follower formation is taken to explain the efficiency of the consensus algorithm.

Abstract:This paper studies the problem of resilient cluster consensus for discrete-time high-order multi-agent systems in the presence of malicious adversaries. Based on a decomposition form of the system matrices, a high-order resilient cluster consensus algorithm is proposed. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the normal agents to reach resilient cluster consensus despite the influence of the malicious adversaries are provided. In contrast to the existing results, the proposed algorithm is suitable for general high-order multi-agent systems and can reduce the network redundancy needed to tolerate the same number of malicious adversaries. Two examples are simulated to validate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Success rates of intrauterine inoculations of layers via the vagina

Abstract:Intrauterine inoculation of layer hens has been documented previously in the literature; however, its efficiency has only been assessed on a very small scale. Attempts were therefore made to inoculate 14 experimental groups each consisting of 10 commercial table egg-producing hens intrauterinely with methylene blue. The effect of four variables—oviposition (natural, hormonally induced or not), position of the hen at inoculation (vertical/horizontal), technique to access the uterus (three methods) and inoculation device (four types)—on the success rate of intrauterine inoculation of layers of different breed and age was studied. Immediately after inoculation, hens were euthanized and the presence of methylene blue and perforations in the oviduct were examined. Successful inoculation rates ranged from 0/10 to 10/10. The 100% success rate was obtained in birds without an egg in the uterus, which were restrained in a horizontal position and inoculated with a hard catheter after exposure of the uterovaginal junction. The second best score was obtained in hens inoculated shortly after natural oviposition, maintained in a vertical position and using a corkscrew-shaped saliva ejector after exposure of the vaginal orifice (7/10). In all other groups the success rate was 5/10 or less. Vaginal perforation occurred in none to eight birds per group. It is concluded that intrauterine inoculation of laying hens is only reliable in birds without an egg in the uterus after exposure of the uterovaginal junction. All other methods proved unreliable and often caused vaginal perforations. However, intravaginal inoculation can be performed with 100% accuracy providing the vaginal orifice is exposed.

Abstract:This article considers the distributed secure consensus tracking control problem for multi‐agent systems (MASs) with relative output information. To tackle the potential false‐data‐injection (FDI) attacks on both the communication between physical components and the control center at the agent level, as well as the message transmission between connected agents, local sliding mode observers (SMO) and distributed observers are proposed for each agent. By introducing reconstructed signals for attacks and smooth terms to compensate the unknown input in the leader agent's dynamics, a distributed adaptive consensus protocol with relative output information is proposed. The closed‐loop stability is analyzed by introducing a novel Lyapunov function. It is shown that all closed‐loop signals are globally uniformly bounded and asymptotically consensus tracking can be achieved. Simulation results are provided to validate the theoretical findings.

Abstract:The ever-present cyber-attacks have posed a significant challenge to consensus of multiagent systems (MASs), due to their capability of compromising agents. These threats underscore the critical need to design control strategies that can endow MASs with resilience. In this article, we address resilient consensus problems for first- and second-order discrete-time MASs, considering the presence of malicious agents, a dynamic leader, and communication delay. First, a resilient controller is designed for first-order MASs, and sufficient conditions are derived based on existing robust graph concepts to achieve consensus with ultimately bounded error. Next, since the derived error bound grows factorially with the system scale, a novel graph structure and a modified controller are proposed to limit the growth to a linear rate. Building upon the obtained results, an estimator-based control framework is introduced to solve resilient consensus problems for second-order MASs. Finally, comparative simulations and practical experiments based on unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned-aerial-vehicles are conducted to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed control methods.

Abstract:In this paper, the problem of resilient distributed secure consensus control for uncertain networked agent systems under hybrid denial-of-service (DoS) attacks is investigated. The current situation is that there exists a cyber layer connecting the network control units and a physical layer with specific physical links in the networked agent systems. Both the communication networks connecting the two layers and within the cyber layer may be attacked by DoS maliciously. These two attack scenarios have different impacts on the networked system. The former focuses on updating the control inputs timely, while the latter influences the connection weight of the cyber communication topology. Firstly, a distributed security consensus framework is proposed for the case that updates of signals are destroyed by DoS attacks between two layers, in which an acknowledgement (ACK)-based attack detection and a recovery mechanism are introduced, and a self-triggered based distributed control protocol is designed. On the premise of avoiding Zeno behavior, the relationship between trigger intervals and DoS attack characteristics is revealed. Secondly, corresponding asynchronous switching topology method is developed for secure consensus of the networked systems when DoS attacks are launched within the cyber layer. In addition, we found that large signals jump during switching and triggering will generate pulses and affect system stability. Therefore, a saturation function is introduced to constrain the fluctuation range of the signal. Finally, the effectiveness of the design scheme is verified by the simulation results of multi-robot systems.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the resilient consensus control problem of the linear multi-agent system under the false data injection attacks, where each agent may receive the injected false data by attackers from its neighbours through communication links. Due to the existence of the false data, the desired consensus of multi-agent can not be reached by the general distributed consensus algorithms. By constructing an extended state observer to estimate the state and the injected false data towards each agent, a distributed resilient consensus control algorithm is designed to offset the negative effect of the attacks. Firstly, a sufficient condition is derived for the undirected multi-agent system under a bounded and decaying false data injection. Secondly, a sufficient and necessary condition is provided for the directed multi-agent system under the false data injection with decaying rate. Finally, the simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed consensus algorithms against the false data attacks.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with output consensus of heterogeneous multi-agent systems under sparse attacks. The leader agent is only available to a small fraction nodes. To estimate the leader's signal, a distributed observer is proposed, which is of the integral type and possesses good robustness and high convergence rate. Unlike the existing literature on distributed observer, this paper introduces a novel event-triggered strategy that utilizes the agents' measurement error state instead of the norm of the state errors. It is theoretically and numerically demonstrated that the triggering times and communication loads between agents can be significantly reduced by using this strategy, and a positive lower bound on the triggering time interval is also computed. Furthermore, an adaptive scheme with pinning strategy is considered to ensure the output consensus with uniformly ultimately bounded in the presence of false data attacks. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the results.
