Abstract:This paper addresses the issue of secure leader-following consensus for multiagent systems (MASs) under denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. In such attacks, the communication channels of agents may be disrupted until the attack terminates. To tackle this challenge, first, an event-triggered communication (ETC) scheme is proposed to alleviate unnecessary information transmission in energy-limited and easily attackable networks. Then, the concept of effective DoS attack intervals is introduced, and the duration attack length rate is analyzed. By employing a Lyapunov function and the average dwell-time (ADT) method, the secure consensus can be achieved. Moreover, Zeno behavior is eliminated to ensure the feasibility of the event-triggered scheme. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed update strategy and control protocol.

Abstract:This article focuses on the problem of resilient leader-following consensus for multiagent systems against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Two update strategies based on event/self-triggering are proposed for the control protocols to handle the leader-following consensus in unreliable shared networks. We first propose a dynamic event-triggered communication scheme to mitigate unnecessary information transfer through energy-limited and vulnerable networks. Continuous communication between agents can be avoided. DoS attacks are supposed to be aperiodic and asynchronous at different edges. The concept of valid DoS attack interval is introduced, and the frequency and duration of attacks are analyzed. The leader-following consensus can be achieved when there exist DoS attacks using the dynamic event-based control strategy. Then, to avoid continuous event detection and save computation resources, a self-triggered communication function is developed. The next triggering moment is predetermined with the latest received state information, and the Zeno behavior is eliminated for the feasibility of the event/self-triggering scheme. Finally, a simulation is provided to verify the effectiveness of the proposed update strategies and control protocols.

Abstract:Consensus control in multi-agent systems (MASs) has wide-ranging applications in various domains. As the scope of applications continues to expand, ensuring the secure control of these systems to counter a diverse range of network attacks becomes highly necessary. Among these threats, Denial of Service (DoS) attacks have emerged as a major network security threat, capable of rendering targeted agents or networks unable to provide normal services. This paper presents an effective control protocol aiming to achieve leader-following consensus in a second-order MAS with event-triggered control mechanism and nonlinear dynamics under DoS attacks. The protocol utilizes absolute velocity and relative position measurements. The maximum attack frequency and duration of the DoS attacks have been obtained. Furthermore, the possibility of Zeno behavior is eliminated. Theoretical analysis demonstrates that, even under DoS attacks, consensus can be maintained among the leaders and followers within the MASs. In conclusion, the effectiveness of the proposed distributed security control protocol is validated through a case study involving a multi-vehicle cooperative system with unmanned cars.

Abstract:Consensus control of multiagent systems (MASs) has applications in various domains. As MASs work in networked environments, their security control becomes critically desirable in response to various cyberattacks, such as denial of service (DoS). Efforts have been made in the development of both time- and event-triggered consensus control of MASs. However, there is a lack of precise calculation of control input during the attacking periods. To address this issue, a distributed secure consensus control with event triggering is developed for linear leader-following MASs under DoS attacks. It is designed with a dual-terminal event-triggered mechanism, which schedules information transmission through two triggered functions for each follower: one on the measurement channel (sensor-to-controller) and the other on the control channel (controller-to-actuator). To deal with DoS attacks, the combined states in the triggered functions are replaced by their estimations from an observer. Sufficient conditions are established for the duration and frequency of DoS attacks. To remove continuous monitoring of the measurement errors, a self-triggered secure control scheme is further developed, which combines the system states and other information at past triggered instants. Theoretical analysis shows that the followers in MASs under DoS attacks are able to track the leader and meanwhile the Zeno behavior is excluded. Case studies are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our distributed secure consensus control of MASs.

Abstract:Security control aims to guarantee the consensus of multiagent systems (MASs) in the presence of the denial-to-service attacker. Most of the existing distributed controllers are invalid during the attack interval due to the paralyzed communication channels. In order to overcome this difficulty, a novel hybrid distributed control protocol is designed. Here, the controller uses the latest information saved in the buffers in the presence of malicious attacks, which will further enhance the security of MASs. Some sufficient conditions on the coupled strength and attack parameters are derived to achieve the leader-following consensus of MASs. Furthermore, we estimate the upper bounds of denial-of-service (DoS) frequency and DoS duration which the MASs can tolerate before losing consensus. Notice that we also reduce the computational complexity via the property of the Kronecker product. Besides, an observer-based model is proposed and the corresponding consensus criterion is established to reduce the effects of attackers on the controller. Finally, the efficiency of our theoretical results is illustrated by a numerical example.

Abstract:The security of multi-agent systems (MASs) is important particularly when considering the potential threat posed by malicious attackers. Specifically, network attacks and information theft caused by attackers have garnered significant attention due to their potential to destroy the consensus of the system. Therefore, this paper presents a novel approach to achieve leader-following consensus control of continuous-time MASs under DoS attacks, leveraging event-triggered encoding and decoding techniques. When the DoS attacks occur, the transmitted information between agents becomes unavailable. To address this challenge, a buffer is introduced to store the latest transmission data and then the stored data can be used when the DoS attacks exist. We also propose an event-triggered encoding–decoding strategy that can be employed for privacy protection in linear continuous-time MASs. The transmitted data is encoded as a codeword before transmitting, and the encoder updates it when event-triggered conditions are met. The receiving end decodes the data upon receipt. Furthermore, a distributed switching controller is designed using the encoded and stored state values to achieve leader-following consensus. The control gain is calculated to obtain sufficient conditions for DoS attacks through the linear matrix inequalities (LMI) and Lyapunov functions. The boundedness of transmitted data and the Zeno phenomenon are also analyzed. Finally, numerical simulations are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.

Abstract:This article proposes a resilient adaptive consensus control scheme for uncertain multi-agent systems subjected to denial-of-service attacks. Due to the denial-of-service attacks, communication between individual agents is disrupted during the attack execution, impacting the realization of consensus in the multi-agent system. To achieve consensus tracking under denial-of-service attacks, a distributed observer is introduced to monitor the dynamics of the leader. Additionally, for uncertain multi-agent systems, a reinforcement learning algorithm with an identifier-agent-critic structure is employed to design a resilient optimized consensus tracking algorithm. In the simulation section, examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Abstract:The ever-present cyber-attacks have posed a significant challenge to consensus of multiagent systems (MASs), due to their capability of compromising agents. These threats underscore the critical need to design control strategies that can endow MASs with resilience. In this article, we address resilient consensus problems for first- and second-order discrete-time MASs, considering the presence of malicious agents, a dynamic leader, and communication delay. First, a resilient controller is designed for first-order MASs, and sufficient conditions are derived based on existing robust graph concepts to achieve consensus with ultimately bounded error. Next, since the derived error bound grows factorially with the system scale, a novel graph structure and a modified controller are proposed to limit the growth to a linear rate. Building upon the obtained results, an estimator-based control framework is introduced to solve resilient consensus problems for second-order MASs. Finally, comparative simulations and practical experiments based on unmanned ground vehicles and unmanned-aerial-vehicles are conducted to validate the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed control methods.

Abstract:Transactions of the Institute of Measurement and Control, Ahead of Print. The leader–following consensus issue is investigated for multiagent systems under external disturbances and denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. DoS attacks are considered to be designed according to an unknown attack strategy and would block the communication network. First, a novel triggering mechanism is designed to save communication resources during normal communication periods by event-triggered strategy and to detect the end of attack periods by time-triggered strategy. Then, a set of estimators is constructed to predict the states of the agent itself and its neighbors when the attack occurs. The estimators do not contain the control signals, which only correct the prediction when the actual system states are received. As a result, a distributed switching controller is designed that includes event-triggered states during normal communication periods and predicted states during attack periods. Finally, the proposed secure control protocol is proven to ensure that the system states are eventually consensus and the Zeno behavior is not exhibited. Moreover, a simulation example is given to illustrate the effectiveness of the presented strategy.

Abstract:In this paper, the leader-following consensus issue is investigated for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems with semi-Markov parameters subject to hybrid cyber-attacks. A semi-Markov chain is adopted to describe the variation of switching topologies caused by the complexity of the environment and makes the studied problem more general. Hybrid attacks consisted of denial-of-service attacks and deception attacks are described with the help of two groups of Bernoulli sequences which are assumed to be independent of each other. On this basis, a sufficient condition for the stability of the consensus error system is established by using linear matrix inequality techniques. Finally, the validity of the results obtained is verified by two numerical examples.

In addition, we introduced a dynamic event-triggered control (DETC) to minimize the utilization of communication resources. Finally, we provided simulation results to show the validity of the proposed approach.

Abstract:<p>This article addresses the leader‐follower consensus control of multiple uncertain strict‐feedback nonlinear systems subject to sensor and actuator attacks. The assumption on the simultaneity and uniformity of adversarial attacks in previous literature are no longer needed and a fully distributed adaptive control scheme is proposed, which does not depend on the original state information but on the disrupted state measurement. It is shown that the consensus errors of high‐order uncertain nonlinear multiagent systems are uniformly ultimate bounded in presence of cyberattacks. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by numerical examples.</p>

Abstract:This paper investigates the event-based secure leader-following consensus control for multiple strict feedback nonlinear systems under denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, where only the output signals are available for consensus control design. Observers are designed to estimate the unknown states based on output signals, which are blocked by the attacks. The bounds on the frequency and duration of DoS with respect to the overall time interval are characterized as the parameters for control design and stability analysis. It is shown that the proposed control schemes guarantee that the consensus errors of the multi-agent systems can converge to an adjustable compact set even in presence of DoS attacks. Simulation results are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Abstract:In this article, the consensus tracking problem is discussed for a class of discrete‐time nonlinear multi‐agent systems (MASs) subject to denial‐of‐service (DoS) attacks. The individual agents interact with each other via communication network whose topology is assumed to be time‐varying and strongly connected. Two techniques are employed to deal with the network‐induced complexities. On one hand, an event‐triggering scheme is adopted to regulate the data transmission among agents with the purpose of making full utilization of the limited communication resources; and on the other hand, an encryption–decryption mechanism is designed with the aim to provide compensation, thereby mitigating the DoS attack effects. It is the objective of the addressed problem to develop a distributed model‐free adaptive control law to enforce the MASs achieve desirable consensus performance. By using a specific projection algorithm in combination with a dynamic linearization method, the desired control protocol is formulated explicitly, whose effectiveness and applicability are demonstrated via an illustrative numerical example.

Abstract:This article investigates the leader‐follower consensus control problem of a feedforward nonlinear multiagent system under denial‐of‐service (DoS) attacks. Compared with the existing results on the consensus control of multiagent systems under DoS attacks, this article considers a class of feedforward multiagent systems with nonlinear functions that are less conservative, and takes into account asynchronous DoS attacks with attack detection delay. To address these problems, firstly, a new class of topological switching sequences and Laplacian matrices are designed based on the properties of the considered DoS attacks to convert the DoS attacks with attack detection delay problems into a class of topological switching problems. Then, a distributed dynamic gain compensator and an output feedback controller are constructed for each follower by using the output information of neighbor agents that are not intercepted by the attacks. Afterwards, by using piecewise Lyapunov functions, it is proven that if the DoS signal satisfies the condition of time‐varying average dwell time (ADT), then the followers can asymptotically track the state of the leader. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of the control algorithm.

Abstract:This paper investigates the distributed secure consensus tracking control problem of the leader-following multi-agent systems (MASs) under consecutive asynchronous denial of service (DoS) attacks. Consecutive asynchronous DoS attacks cause the system to switch among communication subgraphs corresponding to different types of DoS attacks. Based on switching theory, the MAS subject to consecutive asynchronous DoS attacks can be modeled as a switched system with persistent dwell time (PDT). The sleep phase of DoS attacks is considered to be τ -portion in which the communication topology is assumed with a directed spanning tree. The activation phase of DoS attacks can be regarded as T -portion, where effective DoS attacks will destroy the spanning tree structure of the topologies. By constructing the topology-dependent Lyapunov functions, secure controller and persistent dwell time are co-designed to ensure consensus tracking of MASs in the attack environment. Finally, the effectiveness and advantage of the provided method are illustrated with an example.

Abstract:<p>This paper studies the leader-following bounded consensus problem for multi-agent systems (MAS) in the present of denial-of-service (DoS) attacks by means of event-triggered control strategy. Due to the existence of DoS attacks, the original system is transformed into a switched system with both stable and unstable modes. Moreover, DoS attacks can be characterized by frequency and duration constraints under which the bounded consensus can be still guaranteed. It is shown that the duration constraint can be replaced by choosing appropriate mode-dependent average dwell time (MDADT) for each subsystem. In order to obtain a smaller consensus bound and feedback gain matrices simultaneously, an optimization approach is proposed. In addition, the Zeno behavior that may be introduced by event-triggered control is excluded. Finally, a numerical example is provided to illustrate the bounded consensus can be still achieved under the co-designed event-triggered control strategy despite the presence of DoS attacks.</p>

Abstract:This article investigates the secure and privacy-preserving consensus problem of multi-agent systems (MASs) with directed interaction topologies under multiple cyber attacks, which contain deception attacks and DoS attacks. First, a unified attack model is introduced to characterize such a multiple attack phenomenon. Besides, considering the existence of eavesdroppers who can intercept the data transmitted on the links, a fully distributed agent value reconstruction method based on the idea of state decomposition is designed to prevent the leakage of the agent's initial information. Then, a novel privacy-preserving adaptive resilient consensus algorithm (PPARCA) with certain graph robustness condition for MASs under the multiple cyber attacks is proposed. The algorithm adaptively takes different countermeasures in the face of different cyber attacks. PPARCA uses the reconstructed agents' states and combines with the modified Secure Acceptance and Broadcast Algorithm (SABA). Theoretical analysis shows that the proposed algorithm can effectively protect the privacy of the initial state of the agents, and reach resilient consensus in the face of cyber attacks. Finally, numerical simulations and Raspberry Pi MASs practical application experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed results.

Abstract:This paper employs a reinforcement learning (RL) technique to investigate the distributed output tracking control of heterogeneous multiagent systems (MASs) under multiple denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Different from existing results where the dynamic of the leader is known for partial or all agents, the leader’s system matrix is completely unknown for each follower in this paper. To learn the leader system matrix, a data-based learning mechanism is first proposed using the idea of the data-driven method. Then, under the data-based learning mechanism, a resilient predictor subject to multiple DoS attacks is exploited to provide the estimation of the leader’s state for each agent, where adversaries attack different communication links independently. Moreover, a resilient dynamic output feedback controller is proposed to solve the output tracking control problem based on the output regulation theory. To consider the transient responses of agents, a RL-based dynamic output feedback controller is developed to realize the optimal output tracking control by solving discounted algebraic Riccati equations (AREs) in both offline and online ways. Theoretical analysis shows that the secure output tracking control of MASs can be achieved under the proposed data-based resilient learning control algorithm. Finally, a numerical example is provided to verify the effectiveness of theoretical analysis.
